Introduction (LO5)
Introduction The CDP is the final project called Hybrid Cycle Hotel (HCH), location at Poole Quay, the site is 3147 square meters. Poole is a tourism town in Dorset, near Bournemouth. The ground is plain and suitable for cycle. The concept of HCH is providing a public space for cyclist as a meeting space. It is not only a hotel, but also provide facilities relevant to bikes, such as bike workshop, bike hire system, bike museum and bike cafe. On the other hand, the project is not just about the site, as well as entire Poole. It is a network connected with the Micro Vintner which is the level 5 first project, the second project Music School and the last project Poole park. Therefore, the bike route and hire system is a quite complex network rather than a point. The aim of this project is create a final place at Poole for cyclists as a meeting space. Therefore, it is the end of these 2 years serials work about the relationship between bike and architecture. The HCH is a building for cycling. The idea of this building is a modern architecture with bike free access. The difference between normal hotel and HCH is HCH provide a unique experience for cyclists. Cyclist can register and arrived their room without getting off their bikes and the hotel provide facilities such as bike hanging lift in the room, bike repair and bike washing machines. On the other hand, stainable development is very important; some cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen have a quite nice environment for cyclist. Bike becomes a part of people’s life and cycling is one of the best choice to show green lifestyle. ‘’According to a national study of the potential for cycling in towns and metropolitan areas across the country Bournemouth and Poole ranked 2nd only to Greater London in terms of potential for cycling in the metropolitan area. There are approximately 82km of cycle routes in Poole of which 42km are either leisure routes in green areas or separate from traffic. The Poole sections of National Cycle Network Route
2 and National Cycle Network Route 25 are complete and fully signed. ’’ -- Borough of Poole As it can be seen from the text shows on government website, Poole is a place potential for cycling, there are cycle training for young and adults, moreover there are several types of cycle maps provide different cycle routes connected Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch together. Furthermore, there are several as local cycling clubs, accommodation, cycle hire and cycle parking in Poole. However, Poole needs a perfect system to connect different cycle points together. Then, Poole might be not only famous for its harbor, but also become a world famous cycling place. Therefore, this is the reason that why Poole need a Hybrid Cycle Hotel. Compared with previous projects and works, the CDP is a much more complex project. It is a full documented design project, including urban site studies for example week 13-14 group project about site material detail and measurement. Then, the brief development, each week there is a presentation or tutorial with 4 different tutors talk about the latest proposal, articulating both methodology and proposition. The building looks like a big glass box at the early stage, and there are many problems on the first design proposal. The corner even is straight and not suitable for cyclist at all, the aisle is not wide enough and the ramp is too abrupt for cycling as well. After several tutorials and precedent studies like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York and the old fiat factory in Turin. The idea of the building design becomes clearer. These changes including make the entrance more welcome and invite people to come, swop some standard doors to sliding doors in order to avoid some unnecessary accidents, always set handrail and fence next to the stair and ramp, make sure the pedestrian and cycle way is wide
enough and put clear signs to where they should be. “Architecture,” as Aldo van Eyck once said, “is about making a ‘home for man’.” Make beautiful architecture is really necessary, more important; it should be a place suitable for people doing activities in it. For instance, my CDP should fit the site, consider of other buildings and houses near the site. Next, try to sort out how to create a space that can make local people and relevant people happy, and then is making beautiful architecture. The project is not only build a hotel in Poole, but also a redevelopment of Poole’s infrastructure. The redevelopment of Poole’s infrastructure is very important, as there are many mistakes in the master planning of the town. Therefore, the Hybrid Cycle Hotel creates an opportunity to redesign the quay area, central districts, the park, the high street and the old town. The Hybrid Cycle Hotel will introduce a system that is similar to Denmark and Copenhagen, where Poole will be recognized as the biking town. The idea of introducing bikes will create a path for the younger and middle-aged society to enjoy the bike ride as a pathway to the hotel. This becomes a journey to reach to the hotel where the making of the bike becomes the next step. The proposal will be as follow, firstly to create workshop, hotel, bicycles parking and an electronic hire system around the different landmarks, and districts around Poole. Secondly is to create a pathway that will lead from the landmarks from the Micro Vintner to the Music School, then Poole Park to one end destination that is the Hybrid Cycle Hotel where the program will consist of an accommodation, a space biking parking and a bike hire system as well. Lastly, is to create ground lights into the path that will lead to the Hybrid Cycle Hotel. The lights will allow for the path to direct pedestrians to the hotel by following the light, as well as to the bikers.

Group 5: Site Material Detail & Measurement. The material detail of Poole Quay and the surrounding old town of Poole as existing and for evidence of past constructions is an important aspect of analysing and understanding the urban character of the place as a whole. Look for well-preserved examples, alterations, material corrosion, weathering and damage to existing materials and measure the SITE in its external entirety. Ground, Wall, Frame, Canopy… • Laser and standard measuring tape for very detailed survey in M & mm. • Photographs (best in B&W for shadow and light. Day & Night). • Direct Sketches, not traced from photographs. • Analyse all materials and physical build up of Lord Wimborne. • Produce detailed annotated sketches with dimensions from site measurements. A3 Report digital (PDF) and printed to include: Images on every page. Original written text. No cut and paste. No paraphrasing. No summarising. Only isolated, referenced images, sentences and paragraphs. Bibliography and list of figures per page.

Sun Path Sun path refers to the apparent significant seasonalandhourly positional changes of the sun (and length of daylight) as the Earth rotates, and orbits around the sun. The relative position of the sun is a major factor in the heat gain of buildings and in the performance of solar energy systems. Accurate location-specific knowledge of sun path and climatic conditions is essential for economic decisions about solar collector area, orientation, landscaping, summer shading, and the cost-effective use of solar trackers. Photoshop montage drawing has been shown on the left. Due to the river is at the south of Bike hotel, most of the site area will be plenty of sun shine and fresh air.

Land Use ‘Land use’ is also often used to refer to the distinct land use types in zoning. Zoning is a device of land-use planning used by local governments in most developed countries. The word is derived from the practice of designating permitted uses of land based on mapped zones which separate one set of land uses from another. Zoning may be use-based (regulating the uses to which land may be put, also called functional zoning), or it may regulate building height, lot coverage (density), and similar characteristics, or some combination of these. Similar urban planning methods have dictated the use of various areas for particular purposes in many cities from ancient times.

Sight & Views
Materials
All units are able to have a direct view to the green court yard in the middle. Moreover, bike museum, cafe and large hotel rooms are face to the sea. Although the small hotel rooms not benefit from sea views, at the same time, they have large hotel wall art instead.
As it can be seen, most of the exiting buildings in Poole are made of bricks. Some landmarks in Poole, old building like Lord Wimborne (bricks) and new building such as Barckley Bank (concrete) and Lighthouse. On the other hand, the new evelopment hybrid Cycle Hotel should be a sustainable building connecting old town and Poole quay, as well as past, present and future. Moreover, the site is along the seaside with a perfect view.
The building is only 9.9 meters high in order to avoid block the sea view of residential buildings in North West. On the other hand, people who pass by Hybrid Cycle Hotel in south, cafe and museum with big glass window provide a beautiful picture either during the day or night.
The core idea of this project is to promote sustainable, green lifestyle. Therefore, the material chosen is concrete with render, translucent glass and bricks.
Contextual aspects: In order to create a space that with free bike accessibility and green area. Thus, one way cycle path should not less than 1 meter wide. If two way plus pedestrian, the path is 2.12 meters at least.

Net work Bike shops in Poole There are more than 20 bike shops in Poole and Bournemouth. Near Poole old town center and Poole Quay, there are 5 bike shops around which has been shown on the map at right side. They are Cycle Path, Sports Direct Poole, Halfords, Wheel-wright and Bicycle Co (Poole) Ltd. The yellow circle shows the infulence of the bike shop might be. In the middle is the Hybrid Bike Hotel located along Poole Quay and opposite to Sunseeker. The red dot describe inside the area residents can reach the music school in 15 minutes by walk (or 5 minutes by bike). Moreover, the bigger circle shows peolple can arrive the music school around 30 minutes on foot (about 10 minutes cycling).

Urban Site Studies & Brief Development
Use The brief is for the design of Hybrid Cycle Hotel that including private space such as office area, accommodation area. As well as public space like cafe, bike museum and playground. The proposal is divided between 4 major functions: • Bike hire system, provide 24-hour bike hire racks around Poole Quay, Poole high street, Poole bus station, etc. • Large double bed rooms and small single bed rooms allowed cyclist storage their bikes on the wall in their rooms. • Museum space that advocates bike culture in general, also provide gallery space inside for specific exhibitions about bike. • Bike workshop for both adults and children so that the building not only for visitors, but also for local people who like bike to create a green lifestyle.
23
Brief
a)Public activities and requirements • Bike making workshop • Bike class & activities • Bike playground All the public activities and requirement not only for adults, but also for children. Such as children bike playground and safety leaning classes.

b)Business or similar commercial activities and requirements. • Cafe (Micro Vintner) • Hotel • Bike hire Commercial activities and requirements for example Cafe is relevant to ARC550 curiousity shop project Micro Vintner which is open for the public and invite people to come to this building and show the friendly building is not a private business company. As well as hotel and bike hire system.
c)Living accommodation target use and requirements. • Hotel • Hostel Living accommodation will be hotel for rich people and hostel for yound person. Although there are some bike hotels around the world, none of them provide cycling indoor, separate pedestrian and cycle routes service. The concept of Hybrid Bike hotel this building is to let cyclist feel free to cycle in this building even when they go to toilet.
d)Any additional elements to the brief. • Bike fix & clean • Bike museum Commercial activities and requirements for example Cafe is relevant to ARC550 curiousity shop project Micro Vintner which is open for the public and invite people to come to this building and show the friendly building is not a private business company. As well as hotel and bike hire system.
Urban Site Studies & Brief Development
Frank Lloyd Wright Guggenheim Museum
In 1943, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design a building to house the Museum of NonObjective Painting, which had been established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939. In a letter dated June 1, 1943, Hilla Rebay, the curator of the foundation and director of the museum, instructed Wright, “I want a temple of spirit, a monument!” http://www.guggenheim.org/new-york/about/franklloyd-wright-building
Even as it embraced nature, Wright’s design also expresses his unique take on modernist architecture’s rigid geometry. The building is a symphony of triangles, ovals, arcs, circles, and squares. Forms echo one another throughout: oval-shaped columns, for example, reiterate the geometry of the fountain and the stairwell of the Thannhauser Building. Circularity is the leitmotif, from the rotunda to the inlaid design of the terrazzo floors.
The precedent study about Guggenheim Museum in New York inspired me about how to create a nice curve for disable and cyclist. The site is even big enough for Guggenheim. However, the CDP which is Cycle Hotel is only 3 stores high and it has to provide cafe, business and accommodation, because it is a comprehensive project. Over all, this precedent study is very helpful. The concept strategie about how to make a nice environment for visitors especially for cyclists has been solved.
25
Brief The roof is going to use solar panels. A precedent study in Netherland. People can also cycling on the roof, and the power is going to support the leading light on the ground to Hybrid bike hotel. ‘‘A bike path made of solar panels opened today in a suburb outside of Amsterdam. Just 230 feet of it exist. Designers say it’s enough to power three homes.’’ “It’s incredible. It’s the world’s first ever public, solar cycle path,” says the BBC’s Anna Holligan. “There are actually more bikes than people in this country. It’s famous for cycling. So it’s the right place to be testing this pioneering technology.”
This bike path is made entirely of solar panels
26
Brief The Hybrid Cycle Hotel will introduce a system that is similar to Denmark and Copenhagen, where Poole will be recognized as the biking town. The idea of introducing bikes will create a path for the younger and middle-aged society to enjoy the bike ride as a pathway to the hotel. The proposal will be create a pathway that will lead from the landmarks from the Micro Vintner to the Music School, then Poole Park to one end destination that is the Hybrid Cycle Hotel where the program will consist of a space biking parking and a bike hire system as well. Lastly, is to create ground lights into the path that will lead to the Hybrid Cycle Hotel. Proposal 1
Proposal 2
Proposal 3
Proposal 4
The first proposal is take the whole site to build a building maxmum use the site. Due to the site shape looks quite fanny. As well as consider the context of other architecture near site. Therefore, this proposal is not the best choice.
After site analysis and some precedent studies. The concept of Hybrid Cycle Hotel is to create a meeting space for cyclist. So, as a public space, there should be more green space rather than building.
A court yard has been set in the middle to make sure this building is not too big and each part of building have sun light through. The court yard provide a unique view for everyone in the building as well. In front of the building is green space.
Due to the plan looks quite simple and there are many space wasted. So this proposal is to expand the building try to take more space and put bike hire facilities at front and back so that visitors and hire and return their bikes without go into the building.

Proposal 6
Proposal 7
Proposal 8
As it can be seen, this proposal is showing in different colour in order to show different area of the building, such as hire area, museum area, hotel and car parks. However, this plan has been denied by tutor, because it is too complex and does not looks nice. Moreover, the shape and style of the building should fit each other.
In this proposal, there are only 2 building. One is the main hotel and the other one is a bike hire facility at back. These 2 building connected each other at first floor. At this stage, 1:200 detail plans, elevation and section have start to draw. The main hotel is 3 floors hire with office, cafe and museum inside.
A court yard has been set in the middle to build a nice environment. In the middle of the court yard is a massive tree provide oxygen and relax atmosphere to visitors. Due to it is a cycle hotel with bike accessibility, the court yard shape changed to circle instead of square.
Consider of traffic flow in the building, the court yard shape changed again and again. In order to create a most comfortable space for cyclists, the whole building programme has been optimized several times. So that the plan looks a little bit different everytime.

Proposal 10
Proposal 11
Proposal 12
The proposal 9 is to use a big lift in the middle of the court and with 4 sides access. This is one of the options for the cyclist get to upper floor without leaving their bikes. However, this method does not works well if there are many cyclists want to go up at the same time. Moreover, the lift easy to get broken and cost a lot, so this proposal is abandoned at last.
Since this proposal, the details of each floor walls and furniture has been made. This stage is a quite mature part, though the final design changed a bit, the basic form and all the programmes position is nearly there.
Based on the last proposal, the routes within and out the building have been defined. Use photoshop montage and autoCAD to put little people in and test the space. The detail will be shown on other pages.
The shape has been changed again, due to the previous drawing line is not straight. Moreover, in order to make more space for cycling path, the building looks like a ‘H’ rather than square. Although every door changed position, the main programme is still at the same place or sli

A outside aisle has been set at first and second floor so that people and walk out and walk around the building to enjoy the nice sea view. The main material of the building is concrete and all the walk way is using timber.
Some doors have been changed to sliding doors rather than standard door. Although the automatic siding door might be more expensive, consider of cyclist, it is more efficient and cause less ancident.
The parking space is for disable and emergency only. Another small change is the green space in front of the building set to half playground and half leisure facilities such as public seats and bike racks.
A timber cover over the main entrance and it connected with first floor tarrace so that people can even walk on the cover to get closer to the sea.

Denmark Pavilion, Shanghai Expo 2010
The Denmark Pavilion was one of the first ones we presented you, almost a year ago. The project, designed by BIG with ARUP and 2+1, was interesting not only from an architectural and structural point of view, but also for the danish spirit it represents. Basically, the pavilion is a big loop on which visitors ride around on one of the 1,500 bikes available at the entrance, a chance to experience the Danish urban way. At the center of the pavilion there’s a big pool with fresh water from Copenhagen’s harbor (one of the most clean in the world), on which visitors can even swim.
76
The pavilion is a monolithic structure in white painted steel which keeps it cool during the Shanghai summer sun due to its heat-reflecting characteristics. The roof is covered with a light blue surfacing texture, known from Danish cycle paths. Inside, the floor is covered with light epoxy and also features the blue cycle path where the bikes pass through the building. The steel of the facade is perforated in a pattern that reflects the actual structural stresses that the pavilion is experiencing making it a 1:1 stress test.
Denmark is a country that famous for cycling. Shanghai EXPO 2010 Denmark pavilion is a dedicate project shows how to build a building for bikes. It is a small project compared with CDP. The structure is steel due to this is a pavilion for EXPO only and after will be moved away, though steel cost a lot. The CDP is a long time last building, so it is going to use concrete rather than steel or other materials.
Fiat Lingotto Factory - Turin
The 500m-long, five-storey building, had a volume of one million cubic metres, and was equipped with a rooftop test track. Lingotto was the first example of modular construction in reinforced concrete, based on the repetition of three elements: pillars, beams and floors. The factory was closed in 1982. In 1984, Fiat S.p.A. announced a competition and, in 1985, commissioned the Renzo Piano Building Workshop to convert the building. The project aimed to revive the building by transforming it into a multipurpose centre while maintaining its architectural identity.
The building’s exterior remains largely unaltered, but its interior was completely modified in order to accommodate an exhibition centre, a conference centre and auditorium, two hotels, offices and retail space. In 1997, Fiat group’s management headquarters returned to the office block. In 2002, Turin Polytechnic’s automotive engineering department was also installed in the building. The ‘Bubble’, a completely transparent meeting room on the roof of the Lingotto building, was another addition.
Building Control and Statutory Requirements (LO3)
Built in the 1920s for Fiat, Lingotto was the largest and most modern car manufacturing plant in Europe, both architecturally and in terms of car production.
The old fiat factory is an amazing building and a good precedent for CDP, though it is designed for the cars. People can drive all the way up from ground floor to roof and then have a race on the roof. It is a massive building, for this CDP it can be use the same idea, but the scale is much smaller, due to the site area and the main propose is for cyclists. It has a court yard in the middle, and the roof is free access for all. The structure is using concrete, so that it is strong enough even for support heavy cars.

Heating Ventilation Lighting Hybrid Cycle Hotel is using concrete structure. The roof is using solar panels that allows people cycling on it, the solar energy will support LED ground lights during the night. Heating system is screed underfloor heating, provide heat for hotel rooms mainly. There are both nature passive ventilation and active ventilation using product: Vitocal 350-A air heat pump outdoor instead of on the roof and Vitotrol 300-RF. There should be sufficient light during the good weather day, and artificial light in bike museum and other darker places.

PART K K1 Stairs, Ladders and Ramps K2 Protection from falling K3 Vehicle barriers and loading bays K4 Protection from collision with open windows, skylights and ventilators K5 Protection against impact from and trapping by Door Duo to this project is about cycling within the building, so building regulation K1 about ramps can reflect on CDP. K1 is about Stairs, ladders and ramps shall be so designed, constructed and installed as to be safe for people moving between different levels in or about the building. For instance, as it can be seen in diagram 3, to permit safe passage the steepest slope of ramp that should be used is 1:12. All ramps and landings should have clear head room throughout of at least 2m. There is no recommendation of minimum ramp width, except for ramps which form means of escape. Specificly, in hybrid cycle hotel, the ramp width will be defined as 2.12 meters.

The diagram is an example of layout for right-hantranster to WC.
96
Disable Parking Bays There are 10 disable parking bays at the north east of site (back of the hybrid cycle hotel) and a emergency ambulance parking space near the main gate. Diagram2 Parking bay designated for disable people shows a great example regulation about the dimention of disable parking bay. This also reflect CDP. To build a better environment for everyone. Reflective Analysis It is important to make sure the building is accessible from the car park to entrance, lavatory, cafe and each room. The aim is to let cyclists cycling in the building just like outside. Therefore, the cycle routes have been shown on the ground so that cyclists can follow the sign and find their way to where they want to go.

PART 1: Site Analysis (WEEKS 13-14): Group Project
PART 2: Research Brief (WEEK 14-15)
PART 3: Site Strategies (WEEKS 15 - 16)
This unit addresses broader issues of Urban Design and the placement of complex buildings within an existing context on a previously industrial site. The site is centred on the redevelopment of the historic Poole Quay. This includes important relationships with urban spaces, streets, waters edge and existing buildings. There are examples of attempts to respond to this context with varying degrees of success, as well as plans for further development.
The project is for a hybrid urban building, with public and private activities, including business and living accommodation. You must consider and show in your process work how your proposal will have an impact beyond its immediate environment and affect the wider context. These requirements are both measurable (quantities) and immeasurable (qualities). Research and precedent study will illuminate the requirements for different users to bring together the mix into a building or complex of buildings in conjunction with the urban context.
Drawing on research of site and brief, first propose three possible strategies responding to the brief. At least some of the proposal must be three storeys or more in height. These site strategies must describe an urban and architectural approach in the wider context. At the end of this stage, this work will be clearly presented for review and discussion before progressing the design, clearly identifying the selection criteria of the final strategy.
The site analysis will consider the many issues raised by this location. This will be completed by individual research in conjunction with group work, which will require an evaluation of relevant national and international examples of urban design. The group findings will then be made available to the whole year as a central resource.
For example you must include the following a) Public activities and requirements Timeline and Evidenve (LO6)
b) Business or similar commercial activities and requirements. c) Living accommodation target use and requirements. d) Any additional elements to the brief. The above items will be described as clearly as possible.
111
PART 4: Design Development (WEEKS 16 – 22) With reference to the chosen site and research, develop the sketch design. Consider appropriate material choices and how they may be inform the design. Development should include design responses informed by the main areas of specialist study: • Consult Engineers for Structures and Environment development. • Structural research and application to design development. • Environmental research and application to design development. • Building Regulations research and application to design development.
112
PART 5: Design Presentation (WEEKS 22) Formative assessment Present an initial design for review with a comprehensive collection of drawings and models. Prepare all a 1st draft of all the required drawings by the beginning of week 11 together with a written statement to justify proposals. This statement will later evolve into you Critical Analysis. • Group Urban Infrastructure Study. • 1:2500 Urban Context Plan • 1:1250 Location Plan • 1:200 Site Plan • 1:100 Roof Plan • 1:100 Plans • 1:100 External Elevations • 1:100 Section (2no) • 1:50 Part-Section • 1:20 Construction Section/Plan through Elevation At the end of this stage you should complete a first draft of your technology report to explore how heating, ventilation, lighting and acoustics integrated into your project. This should also include an outline of important Building Control Issues. There will be a formative review during this stage that must be treated as a major event.
PART 6: Detail Design (WEEK 22-26) Scheme development in response to the sketch scheme design review and design consultants (structures and environment), including all issues to address LO3.
PART 7: LO3 Reports (WEEKS 24-25) Complete a thorough analysis of your design with respect to: • Heating • Ventilation (passive and/or active) • Lighting (daylight and active) • Acoustic treatment. • Appropriate Building Regulations Compliance. This report must show how these are far more than just technical solutions but how they have informed the wider architectural decisions you have made as well as how they have been informed by the context and orientation of the proposal.
PART 8: Presentation (WEEK 26-28) Final revisions to models and drawings. Format and prepare final documents of this unit. A3 Report books containing all drawings and process work, as well as documenting all your models.
Part 9: Final Exhibition (WEEKS 29-30) Complete and refine the presentation for exhibition according to the assessment requirements below. These should include three landscape A1 boards that fully
Write a 1000 word critical analysis, reflecting on the proposition and identifying how the design has responded to contextual issues, including sustainability. This will form the basis of your verbal presentation. This may require additional drawings and models.

Conclusion This is the final project of part 1 study. Time flies, this unit is really helpful as an introduction for Comprehensive Design Project. It gives an initial idea of how to design a building from different aspect like site analysis, design development to technology and model making. Hope that I could have more time to make more details of the building. P.S. This is not a reflective conclusion for learning outcome, there will be a 1000 words conclusion separately hand in soon.
