Chapter 1

Prepare The first step to make this app is to create several panorama, also the plan of the Lighthouse is essential. A panorama (formed from Greek πᾶν "all" + ὅραμα "sight"), is any wide-angle view or representation of a physical space, whether in painting, drawing, photography, film, seismic images or a threedimensional model. The word was originally coined in the 18th century by the Irish painter Robert Barker to describe his panoramic paintings of Edinburgh and London. The motionpicture term panning is derived from panorama. A panoramic view is also proposed for multimedia, cross-scale applications to outline overview (from a distance) along and across repositories. This so-called "cognitive panorama" is a panoramic view over, and a combination of, cognitive spaces. Used to give a small shot of a wide area. With technology development, ordinary imagine is not enough to provde information sometimes. People wants to take panorama to show more rather than a simple view. In this book, how to make a properly application for phones and ipad will be carefully discussed. Moreover, this book is even focusing on make video panorama and give more information to the reader. Such as put gif or flv files on pano to make it alive.

Equipment

Creating a panorama can using any camera, even a disposable one. No other equipment need, but it can be more quickly, easily and achieve really good quality pictures with equipment below rather than shoot hand-held.

Tripod

Spirit level

Remote shutter release

By using a tripod you can ensure that the camera rotates around a fixed spot and that it stays level. It also makes it much easier to take longer exposures, which may be useful if you want to get a nice sharp picture with everything in focus. You can use a monopod, but you will have to hold it (which means more chance of camera shake and of the position changing between shots. A monopod is useful if there is no space for a tripod, and you can get long poles for shooting panoramas high up (these are in effect monopods)

A spirit level is a pretty essential extra and you can buy very cheap little spirit levels designed to fit into the hot shoe of an SLR camera (see left). Use the spirit level to make sure the tripod’s head is level and that when you attach the panoramic head (see below) and/or camera, that these are level also.

If you find that you are doing long exposures quite often, then a remote release cable or an infra red remote release (if there is one for your camera) can be useful. By using this you also reduce the likelihood of accidentally knocking the tripod or camera while you are doing the shoot. If you are using a digital SLR camera and it has mirror-lockup, using that feature with a remote shutter release allows you to minimise vibrations when you shoot the panorama. (If your panoramic head is large and/or a budget model, the chances of vibration when the shutter fires are increased.)

If you do not use a tripod and/or fail to keep the camera level, you may have problems stitching your pictures (depends on the software used) and you may end up having to crop your panoramas down, thereby reducing the vertical field of view (see simulated images below). This is not true if you shoot a spherical panorama as you can re-align the panorama afterwards in software.

8

If you shoot spherical panoramas you do not need to set up the panoramic head to be perfectly level since you can realign the stitched image with the horizon afterwards in software. However a spirit level like this is, in my opinion, nevertheless an essential piece of equipment.

9

Phone app

Wide angle lens

Panoramic head (“pano-head”)

By shooting several pictures and stitching them together, you can create a 360 degree panoramic picture, no matter what lens you have on your camera. A wide angle lens has the advantages that (i) you don’t need to take as many pictures and (ii) you can capture more vertically so the picture doesn’t look like a narrow ‘slit’.

A panoramic head is an additional attachment you put on the top of the tripod before you attach the camera. It allows you to position the camera so that as you pan to take each picture you are rotating around the no-parallax-point of the camera lens. This in turn eliminates parallax which could otherwise prevent you achieving a sharp high-quality panorama. If you look closely at the object movie of the Kaidan Kiwi 900/950 panoramic head (left) you will notice that the centre of the lens is above the point of rotation and that the camera is rotating about a point in the lens, not the camera body. For more information see the description of parallax and the article about using a panoramic head.

An 8mm lens is generally the widest lens available for any camera, and on a full-frame camera will create a circular image that represents approximately 180 degrees in all directions. Unsurprisingly using an 8mm lens or equivalent is the easiest/fastest way to create spherical panoramas in which you can look straight up at the ceiling and straight down at the floor, and not just side to side. If you intend to buy an circular fisheye lens, remember that although there are many products that can stitch these images, not all can. Check the article about creating spherical panoramas for more details.

10

Pano Apps

If there is no equipment above, we still can use our smart phone. With today’s technology, whether iso or andriod system, it should has the app about taking panorama within camera function. However, sometimes it is not good enough, so download a panorama app is quite neccessary.

Panoramic heads also make it easier to rotate the camera smoothly and many have click-stops of some kind and a spirit level. These features are also available in the Q-top, which is a very neat small tripod mount that provides a quick release shoe for the camera. The shoe is held very tightly in position when placed back onto the mount, and the shoe has 30 degree increments to make it easy to shoot a series of pictures for a panorama. But the Q-top is no substitute for a panoramic head. All images are copyright by HAIBIN FU

Photosynth

App Test

After tested more than 30 apps, sadly, none of them could take perfect sphere panoramas. Then, an iphone application called Photosynth jump out, and match what we espect.

Information Free Category: Photo & Video Updated: 31 January 2014 Version: 1.6.2 Size: 6.5 MB Language: English Developer: Microsoft Corporation Š 2012 Microsoft. All rights reserved. Rated 4+ Compatibility: Requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad Wi-Fi (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi (4th generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (4th generation), iPad mini Wi-Fi, iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPad Air, iPad Air Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPad Air 2, iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 3 Wi-Fi + Cellular, iPod touch (4th generation), and iPod touch (5th generation). This app is optimised for iPhone 5.

Photosynth Screenshots On one hand this is much better than other panorama apps. Seriously, even better than some paid apps. It provide quite nice stitiching function and only spend a few minutes. On the other hand, though it does some good results, the quality is quite low.

Computer Softwares

Precedent Study 1

Apart from phone applications, some computer softwares will be used as well. Such as Wordcheck spelling mistakes and record word documents, Photoshop-adjust mistakes of panorama, Indesign- format pages and spread with pdf file, Premiere-make short videos, autu CAD-draw the floor plans and so on.

AUB-Google Map

Google map street view is the best precedent study that everyone knows at the moment. As it can be seen, street information is located at up life corner. Below the view is a bar contains little map and nice photos near this site which can be easily hidden. Besides, compass and zoom button sit on the right bottom corner.

14

Precedent Study 2

Precedent Study 3

Google Map Business View

AUB-Bing Map Compared with Google map, Bing map street view is less powerful. The panorama colour need to be adjusted, slower and it is less clear. The way of showing pano is slightly different as well.

Moreover, Google even have business view which is based on street view technology.

The Testrun

Photoshop Stitch

PTGui Pro

This is a testrun made by 30 pictures shot by Samsung Camera NX1000, then use photoshop to stitch together. As it can be seen each picture exposure level is different and another problem is deformation and distortion make the panorama can not perfectly stitch.

Panorama 360 After test several phone applications and computer softwares, the result is not satisfied.

Presentation 1 Date: 2/10/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana

First presetation in ARC650 Research by Design unit, each person talk about their own project in this term. Each person allows to use 5 pictures to express their idea. The presentation start at Studio Ghibli’s work, then move on to Hayao Miyazaki’s animation plan and section to show what is essay talks about. Then, on the second part, a draft swf file has been shown. This is a flash which is insert cube panorama and other pictures, also link with plan. This is only a draft to show an initial idea. Feedback is quite good.

42

43

Presentation 2 Date: 9/10/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana

On the second presentation which is a group review rather than whole class. One week later, the first thing need to be done is try to learn panorama knowledge as much as possible. Because Haibin is an architecture student and does not has many photography knowledge, so he looks for some photography students and staff for help. Because it is no method to make a real panorama, so the mind has been changed into use the Lighthouse floor plan instead of pano about Lighthouse. However, this is not a good idea and feedback is bad as well, because there is no relationship between architecture and this project though it is looks quite cool.

44

45

Presentation 3 Date: 23/10/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana This presentation is 2 weeks after the last one, because of RIBA visit, so there is no review on the week between. After one week study about how to create sphere panorama rather than line pano, how to stitch them together. During this period, many experiments have failed, faith and confident lose after every test. At the time almost give up, suddenly, one of the methods does work. On the other hand, the final project has to be linked with MAP exhibition and other curators work. So, the idea is to use a projector to show the panorama and set it into a small dark room in the corner. use mirror to reflect images so that one or two projectors can reflect many walls. But later this idea has been totally changed and replaced.

46

47

Presentation 4 Date: 30/10/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana

Due to panorama application has a big progress and making app become more and more skilled. So, half energy has been put on making video for example interview Tom who is TheGallery technitian. Moreover, make a good panorama is still a hard job. Each time have to take 2 pano and transfer into cube pano then use photoshop to make a better image. The quality always depend on the space, big space pictures are better than small space pictures. Each pano takes about 30 mins too make.

48

49

Presentation 5 Date: 6/11/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana

Since last week, all the work is about phone and computer application. This time presentation is moving on to learning outcome 3 which is material making. From the panorama to projector, then something can hold the projector, so a projector box has to strat making from now on. About the feedback, on one hand, the idea to make a box that allow people to look through a keyhole is not bad. On the other hand, due to some fake pictures is not good, so the most urgent thing is to make a new box that has specific texture on it instead of use other people work.

50

51

Presentation 6 Date: 20/11/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH215 Seminar room Tutors: Simon Beeson, Channa Vithana

Because of last week is individual tutorial and next week is tutorial as well, so this review become to last review before the final presentation. This time is to show some latest work about projector box and Sketch up image. Try to link with others work, also the space and current exhibition.

52

53

Final review Date: 05/12/2014 Time: 9:30am Location: UH001 Lecture Theatre Tutors: Channa Vithana Final presentation is group review. 5 of MAP Exhibition assistant curators present together. Uniform use black and white pictures.

Computer Softwares

Some computer softwares will be used for the Projection box. 3Ds Max Design and Sketch Up to build some 3D models and redering to see the final image. Then, according to the model to design each piece on Auto CAD and transfer dwg file into illustrator so that the lazer cut machine can understand which line show be cut off and chich one is engrave.

70

Precedent Study 1

This is a box for specific something, the initial idea is making a box somewhere like this on for MAP exhibition. This precedent study mainly about how to connect each piece together without any glue. The benefit of this way is the box can be easily connect together and separate into different pieces that convenient fot transportation.

71

Precedent Study 2

The second precedent study is to focus on perforation. Try to use different pattern and give audience a kind of wow feeling. At first glance these pattern might be complex but most of them are just simply copy and paste them selves.

72

Precedent Study 3

The final precedent study is about old film box, it is a kind of installation put light and pictures into a box and let people look through a keyhole to discover. People always has cuiosity, so this is one of the best way to show something delicate inside as well.

73

Pattern development Second version is to use Lighthouse floor plan to be the pattern. Cut off all the walls to make ventilation for the box. The feel is quite like the tatoo on Micheal in Prison Break.

Film inside

This is the first pattern designed on the box is try to copy, paste, mirror and rotate the logo of MAP 2014. After test it on illustrator, the whole piece does not looks good from the feed back of public. So this idea has not developed any more.

Film inside

74

75

Pattern Thus, the next step is to redraw the whole plan on illustrator and carefully change some lines in order to not let the whole wall be cut off and ruin the project. On the right page, the red lines and blue lines mean engrave and black lines are going to be cut off.

Making Process Before make the physical model, try to test with real people and space. A Sketch up model with exhibition space is been made and developed several time. The initial idea is to make a lantern, consider of safe problem then decide to let the box sit on a plinth. After decide to use pocket projector instead of big projector, the model move to second graph which is put the projector portrait or landscape. Moreover, consider about children may can not see the film so make some extra steps to let them be able to reach the box.

A table for sketch books, made of different woods and cardboard, has been crafted by hand saw.

A machine for making music: this instrument, made mostly out of plywood, has been created using the scale of a guitar and mechanism of a piano.

The music playing is an amalgamation of piano, guitar, synthesizer and field recordings that have been influenced by Extreme Territories and other experiences leading up to the exhibition.

A collection of over 1000 jottings that communicate the primary message of each students work displayed in MAP 2014. Spanning over 25m, the roll of tracing paper is displayed in a hand crafted light box that illuminates the story of Music Architecture Poole.

Cardboard tube instillation deisgned around aspects of perfomativity within architecture. Performing through light, sound and use of recycled material, the structure presents architectural models for MAP 2014.

A protector box for level 5 video, made of 6mm MDF and 1:200 scaled people.
