Business & Market Intelligence Fonterra to enter huge infant formula market in China New Zealand's Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, plans to sell its own branded infant milk formula in China by mid-year, playing catch-up with other global diary companies already operating in the booming, high-margin market. New Zealand's biggest company already manufactures milk powder for other companies to sell in China, but has stayed out of the branded baby formula market after it was rocked by a melamine tainting scandal in 2008 which killed at least six children. Fonterra had held a stake in Chinese dairy company Sanlu, which collapsed after it was discovered to have added melamine to bulk up its formulas. The New Zealand producer was criticised for failing to blow the whistle sooner and more loudly. The tainting scandal destroyed consumer trust in Chinese-made milk products, creating opportunities for foreign manufacturers to grab a greater share of the huge market and command a rich premium for their products. Baby formula consumption has increased 12fold to about $12.4 billion in China since 2002 as mothers in an ever-expanding workforce spend less time breastfeeding……. Read Fonterra posts strong half year result: volume and profit growth Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited has lifted its current forecast cash Payout for the 2012/13 season to $6.12 for a fully shared-up farmer, based on a higher forecast Farmgate Milk Price of $5.80 per kgMS and a forecast dividend of 32 cents per share. The Co-operative also narrowed its earnings per share guidance to 45-50 cents per share. The higher forecast was on the back of a strong first half performance by Fonterra, which saw Net Profit After Tax increase by 33 per cent to $459 million, following a particularly robust performance by NZ Milk Products and significant lifts in sales volumes in Fonterra’s Asian and Latin American brands. These achievements were partly offset by continuing challenges affecting the performance of the Australian business…… Read (Download Fonterra half yearly report…. This trend offers manufacturers vast opportunity within the male demographic segment of the world’s population. Important market drivers for sales and development of men’s nutrition products are likely to focus on three important concepts of concern to most men: performance, appearance and overall health. Which of these three concerns is in the driver seat for any particular person will, of course, vary over time and depend upon a number of individual factors operating at the moment. At the younger end of the spectrum, this group is probably more interested in sports and energy drinks where ingredients such as B vitamins, protein and taurine are used in formulation. A man approaching middle age is perhaps more interested in managing his overall health as well as his appearance, and may be interested in products containing nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants and fiber, just to name a few….. Each study respondent subset was assigned a score between zero and 100 based on the percentage of the USDA recommendation for different food groups, such as fruit, vegetables, grains, milk, meat and beans, they consumed each day. While no group scored remotely close to a perfect 100, children and adults scored 56 and seniors scored 65……. This was especially the case for cleaning and cooking practices and least likely to be the case for chilling practices Compared to Wave 1 (carried out in 2010), a greater proportion of respondents in Wave 2 said that, in line with recommended practice, they never wash raw meat and poultry (32% compared to 26% in Wave 1) and that the fridge temperature should be between 0-5˚C (53% compared to 46% in Wave 1) Only two-thirds (64%) of respondents said that ‘use by’ dates were the best indicator of whether food was safe to eat. The reconstituted product can be processed in the same way as fresh milk. Several challenges have to be met when developing yoghurt shakes. Firstly, the pH of yoghurt is lower than that of classic milk shakes; secondly, the viscosity is already higher. “The difficulty lies in developing a hydrocolloid compound that results in a stable foam in an acid environment”, product developer Sebastian Barsch explains. “On the one hand, the compound has to achieve the purpose of a stabiliser, and on the other hand the yoghurt shake must not gel. Moreover, the stabilising system must ensure an optimum, light mouth feel.” This feat has been accomplished with the Stabisol MSM series. The study, published online Thursday by The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, shows that people whose breath has high concentrations of both hydrogen and methane gasses are more likely to have a higher body mass index and higher percentage of body fat…… Read Canola, High-Oleic Canola Oils Reduce Belly Fat in Adults Canola and high-oleic canola oils can lower abdominal fat when used in place of other selected oil blends in a heart-healthy diet for weight maintenance, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s EPI/NPAM 2013 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans on March 21. The study of American and Canadian adults at risk for metabolic syndrome shows that consuming certain vegetable oils may be a simple way of reducing their risk of this medical condition, which affects about one in three U.S. adults and one in five Canadian adults. In the multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, 121 participants at risk for metabolic syndrome – a group of five risk factors characterized by increased belly fat, low “good” HDL cholesterol, and above average blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglycerides that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes – were all given a weight maintenance, heart-healthy diet with a daily smoothie containing one of five study oils. This process was repeated for the remaining four oils…… Read ISSN 1837-7971

Herbal supplements may be putting millions at risk in Asia Scientists from King's College London are warning that millions of people may be exposed to risk of developing kidney failure and bladder cancer by taking herbal medicines that are widely available in Asia. The medicines, used for a wide range of conditions including slimming, asthma and arthritis, are derived from a botanical compound containing aristolochic acids. These products are now banned in the USA and many European countries but the herbs containing this toxic acid can still be bought in China and other countries in Asia and are also available worldwide over the internet….. Read Soy Protein Displays Strong Anti-Cancer Properties Soy protein peptides high in oleic acid may inhibit growth of colon, liver and lung cancers, according to a new study published in the journal Food Research International via Elsevier. The study showed peptides derived from soybean meal significantly inhibited cell growth of various types of cancer including colon, lung and liver. This is the first study to report that proteins found in soybeans could inhibit growth of these types of cancers with colon, lover and lung cancers. The study showed the peptides derived from soybean meal significantly inhibited cell growth by 73% for colon cancer, 70% for liver cancer and 68% for lung cancer cells using human cell lines….. Read Beta-Glucan Boosts Nutritional Value of Low-Fat Yogurt Adding about one-quarter teaspoon of beta-glucan, a fiber-rich component of oats, boosts the nutritional value of low-fat yogurt without noticeably affecting the taste or texture, according to research conducted by researchers at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS). Oat fiber is of interest to foodmakers and nutritionists because studies with volunteers have indicated that it can lower serum cholesterol, which may help improve heart health. ARS food technologist Mukti Singh, research chemist Sanghoon Kim and their colleagues have experimented with adding oat beta-glucan to what's known in the dairy industry as low-fat yogurt mix. The mix is made up of low-fat milk and a selection of common, safe-to-eat bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or various Bifidobacterium species, that ferment the milk…… Read Vitamin D may dent diabetes risk Childhood and adolescent obesity rates in the United States have increased dramatically in the past three decades. Being obese puts individuals at greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, a disease in which individuals have too much sugar in their blood. Now, University of Missouri researchers found vitamin D supplements can help obese children and teens control their blood-sugar levels, which may help them stave off the disease. “By increasing vitamin D intake alone, we got a response that was nearly as powerful as what we have seen using a prescription drug,” said Catherine Peterson, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at MU. “We saw a decrease in insulin levels, which means better glucose control, despite no changes in body weight, dietary intake or physical activity.”…… Read New Research Shows Benefit Of Starting The Day With Fiber-ful Breakfast Cereal Despite ongoing advice from nutrition professionals, only one in ten Americans get the recommended amount of fiber in their diets. The good news is that most people say they are trying to eat more fiber and new research published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine shows that one simple step can make a big difference. According to the study, adults who ate a cereal that included at least 3 grams of fiber for breakfast consumed 42 percent more fiber at breakfast and 14 percent more daily. health are well known," said Pat Felt-Gunderson , Kellogg Company senior nutrition marketing business partner, and one of the study authors. "What is less understood is how easy it is to up our daily fiber intake by simply choosing higher-fiber varieties of the foods we already enjoy, including cereal." Since cereal is a staple in more than 90 percent of U.S. homes, selecting those that include at least 3 grams of fiber is key. Equally important is understanding that whole grain foods often do not necessary include at least 3 grams of fiber…… Read Protein-rich breakfasts prevent unhealthy snacking in the evening Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day, but up to 60 percent of American young people consistently skip it. Now, Heather Leidy, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, says eating a breakfast rich in protein significantly improves appetite control and reduces unhealthy snacking on high-fat or highsugar foods in the evening, which could help improve the diets of more than 25 million overweight or obese young adults in the U.S. Leidy is the first to examine the impact of breakfast consumption on daily appetite and evening snacking in young people who habitually skip breakfast. In her study, 20 overweight or obese adolescent females ages 1820 either skipped breakfast, consumed a high-protein breakfast consisting of eggs and lean beef, or ate a normal-protein breakfast of ready-to-eat cereal. Every breakfast consisted of 350 calories and was matched for dietary fat, fiber, sugar and energy density. The highprotein breakfast contained 35 grams of protein. Participants completed questionnaires and provided blood samples throughout the day. Prior to dinner, a brain scan using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed to track brain signals that control food motivation and reward-driven eating behavior……. Reviews, Comments, and Opinions Dietary fiber and the glycemic index: a background paper for the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2012 The aim of this study is to review recent data on dietary fiber (DF) and the glycemic index (GI), with special focus on studies from the Nordic countries regarding cardiometabolic risk factors, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and total mortality. In this study, recent guidelines and scientific background papers or updates on older reports on DF and GI published between 2000 and 2011 from the US, EU, WHO, and the World Cancer Research Fund were reviewed, as well as prospective cohort and intervention studies carried out in the Nordic countries. All of the reports support the role for fiber-rich foods and DF as an important part of a healthy diet. All of the five identified Nordic papers found protective ISSN 1837-7971

associations between high intake of DF and health outcomes; lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colorectal and breast cancer. None of the reports and few of the Nordic papers found clear evidence for the GI in prevention of risk factors or diseases in healthy populations, although association was found in subgroups, e.g. overweight and obese individuals and suggestive for prevention of type 2 diabetes. It was concluded that DF is associated with decreased risk of different chronic diseases and metabolic conditions. There is not enough evidence that choosing foods with low GI will decrease the risk of chronic diseases in the population overall. However, there is suggestive evidence that ranking food based on their GI might be of use for overweight and obese individuals. Issues regarding methodology, validity and practicality of the GI remain to be clarified. ……… pdf, 16 pages…… Read Gut Microbiota as Potential Therapeutic Target for the Treatment of Cow’s Milk Allergy Cow’s milk allergy (CMA) continues to be a growing health concern for infants living in Western countries. The long-term prognosis for the majority of affected infants is good, with about 80% naturally acquiring tolerance by the age of four years. However, recent studies suggest that the natural history of CMA is changing, with an increasing persistence until later ages. The pathogenesis of CMA, as well as oral tolerance, is complex and not completely known, although numerous studies implicate gut-associated immunity and enteric microflora, and it has been suggested that an altered composition of intestinal microflora results in an unbalanced local and systemic immune response to food allergens. In addition, there are qualitative and quantitative differences in the composition of gut microbiota between patients affected by CMA and healthy infants. These findings prompt the concept that specific beneficial bacteria from the human intestinal microflora, designated probiotics, could restore intestinal homeostasis and prevent or alleviate allergy, at least in part by interacting with the intestinal immune cells. The aim of this paper is to review what is currently known about the use of probiotics as dietary supplements in CMA….. pdf, 12 pages… Read Role of Probiotics in Short Bowel Syndrome in Infants and Children—A Systematic Review Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in children. Probiotics, due to their beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., improving gut barrier function, motility, facilitation of intestinal adaptation and decreasing pathogen load and inflammation) may have a therapeutic role in the management of SBS. In the crossover RCT, there was no consistent effect on intestinal permeability (primary outcome) after supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG) in nine children with SBS. The case control study (four cases: four controls) reported a trend for increase in height and weight velocity and improvement in non-clinical outcomes, such as gut flora, lymphocyte count and serum prealbumin. Five of the nine case reports showed that children (n = 12) with SBS were benefited (e.g., cessation of diarrhoea, improved faecal flora, weight gain and weaning from parenteral nutrition) by probiotic supplementation. The remaining four reported on the adverse effects, such as Lactobacillus sepsis (n = 3) and d-lactic acidosis (n = 2). There is insufficient evidence on the effects of probiotics in children with SBS. The safety and efficacy of probiotic supplementation in this high-risk cohort needs to be evaluated in large definitive trials…… pdf, 21 pages…. Read The Dietary Intake of Wheat and other Cereal Grains and Their Role in Inflammation Wheat is one of the most consumed cereal grains worldwide and makes up a substantial part of the human diet. grains contain “anti-nutrients,” such as wheat gluten and wheat lectin, that in humans can elicit dysfunction and disease. In this review we discuss evidence from in vitro, in vivo and human intervention studies that describe how the consumption of wheat, but also other cereal grains, can contribute to the manifestation of chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases by increasing intestinal permeability and initiating a pro-inflammatory immune response…… pdf, 17 pages… Read The Role of Gut Microbiota on Insulin Resistance The development of obesity and insulin resistance has been extensively studied in the last decades, but the mechanisms underlying these alterations are still not completely understood. The gut microbiota has been identified as a potential contributor to metabolic diseases. It has been shown that obese individuals present different proportions of bacterial phyla compared with lean individuals, with an increase in Firmicutes and Actinobacteria and a decrease in Bacteroidetes. This alteration seems to interfere with intestinal permeability, increasing the absorption of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which reaches circulation and initiates activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 and 2 and LPS receptor CD14, leading to increased activation of inflammatory pathways. With these activations, an impairment of the insulin signaling is observed, with decreased phosphorylation of the insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate (IRS) and Akt, as well as increased inhibitory serine phosphorylation of IRS-1. Altered proportions of bacterial phyla have also been demonstrated to interfere with host’s biochemical pathways, increasing energy extraction and depot in adipose tissue. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms by which the alteration in the gut microbiota produces different signaling activations and phenotype changes may offer an interesting opportunity for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes……. The State of U.S. Diets Despite our collective move toward healthier eating and lifestyles, the American diet has a long way to go on the road to measuring up to U.S. dietary standards, according to two recent studies published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The first study culled its findings from the responses of 8,272 Americans ranging in age from 2-65+ years who reported what they ate in the span of one day, via the Healthy Eating Index-2005 survey. Each study respondent subset was assigned a score between zero and 100 based on ISSN 1837-7971
