Just as I, a proud 80s baby, conjure images of biker gans, pale faces and sunken cheeks, strung out strippers with needles in their arms, or someone living in a dark alley behind the dumpster. (Which is far from accurate) Growing populations of middle to upper income white, latino and black youth from unlikely communites are lending their demographic DNA to the "addict" portrait. Rather than your old school needle junkie, these newcomers started on pills before going broke and making the switch to Black â&#x20AC;ŚAnd you thought junkies never got makeovers. The Self-Help genre is terribly uninspiring and unimpressive. It is saturated with literature using the same tired format. Memoirs of addicts, PhD's for days, 12 Step based structure, or some combonation of those. Self Help literature is ripe to undergo a refresh, shake up. Or perhaps an injection of influence from another bolder, popular catergory. Addicts and their loved ones deserve content that has evolvled to meet their standards and styles. The hope in writing FUNCTIONING is modest progress. To open the door for something better. My heart tells me this is the right direction and time.
