MUSIC FROM EUROPE TO THE NEW WORLD The earliest music that came to the Americas from Europe would seem at first glance to be a copy of Renaissance and Baroque music from the Old World. However, in most of these pieces we find “an American signature” that is, the way in which creoles and mestizos from the New World interpreted the sounds and compositions that arrived from across the ocean, giving life to new musical accents and cadences that incorporated European musical forms. The 10th edition of the Festival celebrates this interaction between the musical cultures of Europe and the Americas. Our musical journey sets off from 16th century Spain, following the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World, and continues through several generations where the cross-influences of Old World and New World upon each other become evident.
Among the works to be presented are Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Piazzola’s Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, Shostakovich’s Concerto in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra, Dvorák’s “New World” Symphony, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras, and Gnatalli’s Concerto for Harp and String Orchestra. The eminent ensembles and soloists of the Festival include the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, cellist Inbal Segev, harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, conductor Jordi Savall leading three sensational ensembles: La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hesperion XXI, vocal and early music ensembles from Spain, and Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, a group from Mexico known for integrating music of the Baroque period with Latin American folk music; Concerto Italiano an ensemble led by conductor and harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini, and violinist and guest conductor Maxim Vengerov.

MUSIC FROM THE NEW WORLD SERIES / HOUSE OF THE AMERICAS In addition to presenting classical music from the Old World, the Cartagena Festival is also committed to showcasing music and culture from the New World. In much of this part of the globe, our identity has important roots in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and our music includes African influences, classical ideas adopted from Europe, and folk traditions of ethnic groups
indigenous to Latin America. This special Series celebrates the diverse and vibrant music scene existing today in this part of the world. This year’s “New World” series will be hosted for the first time in The House of the Americas, a new name for the venue that will focus exclusively on the music and activities that exalt the culture of this region.

ORPHEUS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA / USA
A standard-bearer of innovation and artistic excellence, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras. Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1972 by Julian Fifer and a group of like-minded young musicians determined to combine the intimacy and warmth of a chamber ensemble with the richness of an orchestra. Orpheus has trademarked its signature mode of operation, the Orpheus Process™, an original method that places democracy at the center of artistic execution. The ensemble performs without a conductor, rotating musical leadership for each work among its members. It has been the focus of studies at Harvard and Stanford, and of leadership seminars at Morgan Stanley and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, among others.

There is an old-world glamour to Ms. Akiko Meyers’s playing, with her high-gloss, singing sound and her liberal use of sighing slides from one note to another...in the most hazardous tempo changes and transitions their interaction was impressively relaxed.
