THE F E S T I VA L The Cartagena International Music Festival has a particular space in the international circle of cultured music events. It is a program with a strong identity, both because of the setting where it takes place, as well as for its content. Through editions dedicated to specific topics, the Festival has consolidated an identity as a bridge between the culture and

music of Europe and Latin America, where, in addition to countless expressions of the ‘classical’, a space has opened for diverse, contemporary interpretations of traditional music, in a constant dialogue between the two souls of the Festival: one European, the other Latin-American. In addition to bringing together a diverse audience through a common musical and artistic appreciation, the Festival also aims to encourage positive social transformation and support artistic education and specialization in Colombian orchestras, bands, choirs, and soloists.

In the framework of the public cultural exchange agenda known as the Year Colombia-France 2017, our 11th season will be dedicated to French music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in a journey that will take us from French musical impressionism to the exploration of the similarities and contrasts with other tendencies in French music of the time. Works by Debussy, defined as the great impressionist author, Ravel, Satie and other French composers, will be at the heart of this new edition, which will nevertheless encompass the music of Saint - SaĂŤns, Poulenc, Roussel, and Chausson, among others, as well. Along with concerts dedicated to great instrumental music, the Festival will incorporate essential aspects of the Paris musical scene of that time. And, in its series dedicated to the music from the New World, the Festival will enjoy performances by renowned musicians from Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil.

FIGARO A coproduction in alliance with the Spoleto Festival dei 2Mondi (Spoleto, Italy) For the first time in its history, the Cartagena International Music Festival has joined forces with one of Italy’s most important cultural events, the Spoleto Festival dei 2Mondi, in the joint production of W. A. Mozart’s famous opera buffa “The Marriage of Figaro”, a new artistic project by the Italian festival with the executive production of the Fondazione Teatro Coccia di Novara.

After its gran debut last June 24th in Spoleto, the opera will be performed again at the Cartagena International Music Festival on January 13 and 15, 2017, under the artistic direction of Giorgio Ferrara, director of the Spoleto Festival, staging by Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo, three-time Academy Award winners, costume design by Maurizio Galante and lights by A. J. Weissbard. The interpreters will include five Italian singers, six Colombian singers, and Colombia’s Opera Choir and National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the South African-born conductor, Gérard Korsten.

TEATRO ADOLFO MEJĂ?A

Declared a national monument, this theater is considered one of the most beautiful concert halls in Latin America. Built in 1911 and renovated in 1998, the theatre still preserves the façade of an older era with its elegant staircases and Italian marble sculptures. The ceiling, painted by Colombian master Enrique Grau (19202004), is a stunning fresco which depicts the Muses engaged in their respective artistic endeavors. JA NUARY

CAPILLA SOFITEL LEGEND SA N TA CL ARA

Founded in 1617, this former convent has been beautifully restored and transformed into the Hotel Santa Clara. In the restoration much of the original walls of the convent were maintained and all of the rich colonial architectural style that marked its history was preserved. Concerts are held in the mystical “Cloister of Clarisse,� the chapel where hundreds of years ago residents of the convent would pray. JA NUARY

C E R R O D E L A P O PA The Pope’s “Hill” is the highest geographical point in Cartagena and offers a spectacular view of the city, especially at sunset. At the top there is a beautiful church and a convent dating back to the 1600s. The cloister of the convent is one of the most exquisite in all of Colombia.

CAPILLA SA N TA TERESA Located in what was the first convent to exist in Cartagena de Indias, the chapel was built in the 17th century in honor of Saint Teresa of Ávila and the order of the Carmelite nuns. The setting is filled with light and excellent acoustic, ideal for the performance of chamber music. Currently, it belongs to the Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa. JA NUARY

The Plaza in front of San Pedro Claver Church is a spectacular backdrop for the free one hour late evening concerts held for the general public. The church was built in honor of the first canonized saint of the New World.

Cartagena has been a vibrant port for centuries. Today it continues to be a great Caribbean logistics center, servicing major shipping lines worldwide through connections to more than 432 ports in 114 countries. Concerts take place on the massive loading dock.

The Convention Center was built in 1980 of coralline stone, the same material used on the colonial buildings in the historic center. It is used for conferences, music shows, theatrical plays and important events.
