En 1962 la investigación plástica de Berrocal se cristaliza en una situación en la que la complicación de la cuarta dimensión le obliga a buscar nuevas tecnicas industriales de fusión solo utilizables para series numericamente inportantes. Nace asi el “ multiple”, equivalente, como modo de diffusión, a lo que la gráfica, en todas sus tecnicas, representa en la obra pictorica: permitir a un publico más extenso el acceso a la posesión de una verdadera obra de arte.
In 1962 Berrocal’s research crystalized in the intricacy of the fourth dimension. He then had to investigate for new industrial casting techniques that could only be applied to large scale productions. The “multiple” was hence born and equalled, in terms of diffusion, what graphic techniques represented for painters, allowing a large portion of public to own real affordable works of art.

The general cataloguing of Berrocal sculptures reaches 530 sculptures, 60 of which, are signed and numbered and guaranteed limited editions which have mainly been created between 1962 and 1984. In addition, 31 are the works out of commerce, created exclusively for public and private corporate celebrations. Las ediciones de esculturas La peculiaridad de las esculturas de Berrocal que transforman el espectador en actor, exige la participación activa del aficionado al arte. Esta participación puede realizarse plenamente solo en casa de uno, lejos de los museos o galerías donde, generalmente, “se prohibe tocar”. Como los filósofos griegos presocráticos preocupados de conciliar o de reconciliar el Uno y el Múltiple, por lo menos con el pensamiento, Berrocal concibe así la idea maestra de la escultura editada en tirada limitada y firmada. El la define como “una obra de arte tridimensional destinada a ser
producida en un gran número de ejemplares originales y realizada con técnicas que garanticen la mayor fidelidad al modelo inicial”. Gracias a las posibilidades de gran difusión brindadas por las ediciones, las esculturas de Berrocal dejan de ser obras únicas reservadas a un pequeño numero de coleccionistas y de museos. El éxito de este proceso demuestra que Berrocal tiene razón cuando dice que si hay que limitar la tirada de una edición de escultura, esta debería ser limitada al mayor numero posible de aficionados al arte.
Sculptures in limited editions The peculiarity of Berrocal’s sculptures is that they transform the spectator into a participator. Of course this can only be accomplished at home and not in museums or art galleries where there is generally a “do not touch” sign on display. As with the pre-socratic philosophers, Berrocal too was concerned with the idea of reconciling the One and the Many. Therefore he conceived the fundamental idea of sculptures cast, signed and numbered, in limited editions. He defines sculptures in limited edition as a three dimensional work of art, specially created to be produced in a large number of originals and made through techniques which assure fidelity to the initial model.
As a result of the increased availability offered by limited editions, the sculptures of Berrocal are no longer unique pieces only obtainable by a few collectors or museums. The success of this procedure proves Berrocal’s views: for him, if an original edited sculpture has be limited in number, it has to be to the widest number of art enthusiasts.

Biografía | Biography
MIGUEL BERROCAL pequeña biografía Miguel Ortiz Berrocal nace en Villanueva de Algaidas, Málaga, el 28 de Septiembre de 1933. Comienza su formación académica en la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas de Madrid, donde cursa los dos primeros años de matemáticas, obligatorios para el ingreso en la Escuela de Arquitectura. Mientras tanto, como muchos de los aspirantes a cursar los estudios de Arquitectura, frecuenta la Escuela de Artes y Oficios, donde es discípulo de Ángel Ferrant y más tarde, alumno del ceramista Pierre Canivet en París. Se interesó desde su juventud por un sistema de escultura desmontable, transformable y combinatorio que caracteriza toda su posterior producción escultórica. En ella hay una búsqueda constante de nuevos conceptos y espacios desconocidos en el interior de la propia estructura que abre el camino para que el espectador se adentre en el mundo de la construcción y la deconstrucción. En su obra han influido escultores como Oteiza y Chillida entre otros. Recurre a temas clásicos ( torsos, cabezas o figuras reclinadas) y, sobre todo, a
un cierto antropomorfismo para evitar un resultado excesivamente geométrico y abstracto aunque es evidente la impregnación de las matemáticas o la arquitectura en sus esculturas fruto de su propia inclinación y de su formación académica. Su estilo se caracteriza por la inspiración helénica, por el barroquismo y la complejidad y amplitud de las formas. La meticulosidad y precisión en la realización de complejas piezas manipulables, la exactitud de los diseños y los posteriores ensamblajes, dan como resultado elementos escultóricos formados, a su vez, por otras piezas que tienen una identidad propia. Es precisamente esa dificultad que comporta la realización de cada una de sus esculturas la que le impulsa, a partir de 1962, a realizar las mismas de manera seriada. Con ello abre la posibilidad al escultor de multiplicar sus piezas de la misma manera que lo hacen los pintores gracias a los procedimientos que la Artes Gráficas les brindan. Así pues, un mismo tema, se repite en una dimensión distinta, con elementos nuevos combinados y dispuestos de manera diferente. A partir de 1974 su estilo se depura extraordinariamente, pasando a realizar formas cuya mecánica es más sencilla. En su etapa más reciente se ha servido de un dibujo cada vez más sintético y esencial. Desde que en 1952, celebrara en la galería Xagra de Madrid su primera individual, ha realizado numerosas exposiciones por todo el mundo y su obra se encuentra en importantes museos e instituciones tanto europeas como americanas, consagrando Berrocal como uno entre los mas grandes y significativos artistas de nuestro época. Después de haber vivido y trabajado en Negrar, Verona Italia entre 1964 y 2005 Miguel Berrocal decide volver definitivamente a Andalucía donde abre su nuevo taller en su pueblo natal de Villanueva de Algaidas. Fallece en Antequera, Málaga el 31 de Mayo de 2006 en plena actividad creativa.
MIGUEL BERROCAL short biography Miguel Ortﾃｭz Berrocal was born in Villanueva de Algaidas, Mﾃ｡laga, on September28, 1933. He began his academic training in the Faculty of Exact Sciences in Madrid, where he read the first two years of mathematics as a requirement for enrolment in the School of Architecture. Meanwhile, like many others who aspired to study architecture, he attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by ﾃ］gel Ferrant, and later he studied with the potter Pierre Canivet in Paris. He took an early interest in sculpture that could be taken apart, transformed or combined, and this has remained a feature of all his subsequent sculptural output. In his sculpture there is a constant search for new concepts and unknown areas within the very structure of the work, creating a path by which the viewer can enter the world of construction and deconstruction. His work has been influenced by sculptors such as Oteiza and Chillida, among others. He uses classical themes (torsos, heads or reclining figures) and, above all, a certain anthropomorphism to avoid an excessively geometrical, abstract result, although in his work there is a clear imprint of mathematics and architecture, resulting from his own inclination or his academic training. His style is characterised by a Hellenic inspiration, a baroque quality, and a complexity and
breadth of forms. The meticulousness and precision in the construction of complex manipulable pieces and the exactness of the drawings and subsequent assemblages result in sculptural elements that in turn consist of other pieces with an identity of their own. It was precisely the difficulty involved in the creation of each individual sculpture that in 1962 led him to embark on serial production. This provided the sculptor with a way of multiplying his pieces, just as painters do by means of graphic arts procedures. Thus a given theme may be repeated in a different dimension, with the combination of new elements or arranged in a different way. In 1974 his style underwent a remarkable reduction, and he began to make simpler, forms. In his most recent period he has used increasingly elemental, essential drawing. His first solo show was at the Xagra gallery in Madrid in 1952. Since then he has presented numerous exhibitions throughout the world, and his work is to be found in leading museums and institutions in Europe and America, establishing Berrocal as one of the most significant and important artists of our times. Miguel Berrocal lived and worked in Negrar, Verona Italy between 1964 and 2005 when he decided to return to his born town in Andalucia Villanueva de Algaidas to build and open a new studio. He dies in Antequera, Mﾃ｡laga on May 31st 2006 in full creative activity. 85

El día 22 de Noviembre de 2007, se ha constituido en Madrid la Fundación Escultor Berrocal Para Las Artes. La Fundación ha sido constituida por los herederos de Don Miguel Berrocal cumpliendo la voluntad ex- presa del mismo y culminando así el proyecto que el artista inició en vida.
On the 22nd of November 2007 the Fundacion Es- cultor Berrocal Para Las Artes (Foundation sculptor Berrocal for the Arts) has been constituted in Madrid, Spain. The Foundation has been created by the heirs of Miguel Berrocal, fulfilling so his express desires and completing the project that the artist started while still alive.
La Fundación tiene previsto desarrollar su actividad desde España con proyección internacional. La preside la viuda del escultor Doña Cristina de Braganza de Berrocal.
The Foundation will develop its activities from Spain with international projection. It is leaded by the widow of the sculptor Mrs Cristina de Braganza de Berrocal.
Son fines de esta institución la conservación, el estudio y la difusión de la obra de Miguel Berrocal y la contribución al desarrollo y progreso de la cultura y de las artes.
The Institution aims at the conservation, the research and diffusion of Miguel Berrocal’s works, as well as the contribution to the development and progress of Culture and Arts, Science and Technology in all its forms.
