THE FOUNDATION
In 1964 Marcelino Botín Sanz de Sautuola and his wife Carmen Yllera, founded the Marcelino Botín Foundation to promote social development in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. Today the Foundation, faithful to the spirit of its founders and after nearly 50 years of work, is Spain’s number one private foundation both in terms of the investment capacity and social impact of its programmes. The Botín Foundation’s objective is to stimulate the economic, social and cultural development of society. To achieve this, it acts in the fields of art and culture, education, science and rural development, supporting creative, progress-making talent and exploring new ways of generating wealth. Its sphere of action focuses primarily on Spain and especially on the region of Cantabria, but also on Latin America.

ART AND CULTURE
The Botín Foundation’s Art Programme is based on three main pillars: Training by means of international workshops led by renowned artists and grants for artists. Research into the genre of drawing by great Spanish artists throughout every historical period. International art exhibitions either produced independently by the Foundation or derived from its research and education programmes. In addition, the Foundation offers a varied programme of concerts and conferences. More information about this programme, as well as virtual visits to exhibitions, is available on the Foundation’s website. Furthermore, the Foundation has a library in Santander, which is open to the public, specializing in contemporary art and music. Its content also comprises the subjects of education and rural development.
THE BOTĂ?N CENTRE
The BotĂn Centre, an art venue which will use the arts to incentivize life in the city of Santander, will open in June 2014. It will be one of the foremost private art centres in Spain, as well as a major fixture on the international circuit of leading art venues, a new meeting place in the city centre which will use art and culture to incentivize and galvanize Santander and a groundbreaking international venue for the development of creativity through the arts. The Centre, designed by Renzo Piano, will also serve as a new meeting place in Santander, linking the Bay with the city centre and doubling the current size of the Pereda Gardens, its main historical park.
EDUCATION
The BotĂn Foundation helps schools to implant curricular programmes fostering the development of pupils’ emotional and social intelligence and their creativity. The objective is to improve the quality of education, to promote the healthy growth of children and teenagers and to provide families and teachers with the knowledge and tools needed for them to develop the abilities, attitudes and skills that will allow them to become independent, competent, compassionate and happy individuals. To achieve this, the Foundation works in three areas: participation, via its Responsible Education programme, in collaboration with over 100 schools; research, via its Platform for Innovation in Education; and training, via scholarships, courses and a Master’s Degree for teacher training students.
RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND HERITAGE
Since 2005 the Botín Foundation has strived to tackle the challenges of rural development by designing a comprehensive sustainable growth model and putting it into practice in a specific region of Cantabria, namely in the Nansa and Peñarrubia Valley. The application of this innovative action plan promotes cultural, social and economic development in the Valley based on the area’s pre-existing human, natural, scenic and cultural resources.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
The Botín Foundation strongly supports scientific research and the transfer of knowledge from the academic world to society as one of the main driving forces for Spain’s economic and social development. Since 2003, the Foundation has worked with some of the country’s leading biomedical teams on an ambitious programme designed to work alongside researchers at every link in the valuable chain of knowledge, so that their discoveries can be more easily transformed into products or services yielding economic and social wealth. Since 2010, moreover, thanks to its Mind the Gap programme, the Foundation devotes human and financial resources to help close the gap separating the world of science from investors and the industry, in order to ensure these products and services can make their way onto the market. The Foundation has launched six business projects of this kind so far in 2013.
SOCIAL WORK
Since the Foundation was established, following the express wishes of its founders, it has put into practice a Social Work programme in Cantabria channelled through other institutions that already have experience of working directly with the sectors of society they care for. The Foundation supports a variety of programmes including childcare, aid for immigrants, companionship services for the elderly, prevention of drug abuse, and the integration of disabled people.
TREND OBSERVATORY AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
It is through the Trend Observatory that the Botín Foundation divulges the knowledge it harvests thanks to its action plans, attracts additional knowledge to help orientate those same programmes, and profoundly observes our understanding of the world in an attempt to detect opportunities for creating economic and social growth. For the most part its work centres on the areas of education, science and technology transfer, as well as on water and energy. It is also from the Observatory, in keeping with the Botín Foundation’s fundamental mission, that two programmes are being undertaken concerning the detection and development of talent: Solidarity Talent seeks to recover talent from the ranks of the unemployed in order to boost and professionalize the third sector in Spain. The Programme for Strengthening the Civil Service in Latin America has as its main objective the strengthening of public institutions, thus increasing the number of the region’s best students who pledge themselves to the advancement of their societies from the public sector.
Each and every activity undertaken by the Botín Foundation since it was founded is the outcome of the effort of all those who have worked and collaborated with the institution. Their commitment to the Foundation’s mission and to the comprehensive development of society has made it possible to continue supporting talent and a better future. The Board of Trustees would like to offer their gratitude to all those people who strive to faithfully carry out the founders’ wishes today.
