Unstoppable beyond life

Josep Carreras LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION

Our fight will endure UNTIL THERE’S A CURE

2

Dear friends, Someone once said, “There is something incredible waiting to be discovered somewhere”. For me it would be to make leukaemia a curable disease. Since we created the Foundation we have made great progress in the treatment of leukaemia, but there is still a long way to go. Today I would like to propose a new way of contributing to the fight against leukaemia: through inheritance and legacy. Making the Josep Carreras Foundation the beneficiary of your will is a way of turning your last wishes into better chances for patients and helping to bring a cure for this disease ever closer.

LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION

Our fight will endure UNTIL THERE’S A CURE

Turning your last wishes into better chances for patients We would all like to leave our loved ones a world without injustice, pain or disease. A world in which no life was cut short because of leukaemia. A world in which bone marrow donation was not the exception, but the rule. Any help you give to the Josep Carreras Foundation helps us achieve our aim: to bring a cure for this disease ever closer.

What can I leave to the Josep Carreras Foundation as an inheritance or legacy? You needn’t have a great fortune or a lot of property.

Cash

Financial securities

A percentage of the total value of the estate or a specific sum.

Shares, investment funds, etc.

Personal property Jewellery, furniture, etc.

Real estate Apartments, houses, land, etc.

What can we achieve with your inheritance or legacy? An apartment = Could be turned into a

UNSTOPPABLE SINCE 1988 Since 1988 the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation has been helping to fight this terrible disease through its various programmes.

1 RESEARCH TO FIND A DEFINITIVE CURE Researching since 1991 In 2010 the Josep Carreras Foundation, together with the Government of Catalonia, decided to launch a momentous and unparalleled project: the first European

research centre exclusively focused on leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases, one of the only such centres to exist in the world. The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) is a centre without precedent which, with the work and dedication of researchers from around the world, uses

the most innovative technologies to try to vanquish this and other malignant blood diseases. There are already ten lines of research underway, all of them focused on the main cancerous diseases of the blood.

We have to continue researching to find a definitive cure for leukaemia and so that patients have a better quality of life during and after the disease.

2 TECHNOLOGY THAT IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF LIFE We finance hospital infrastructures in order to introduce the most advanced therapeutic techniques Before the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) was founded, the Josep Carreras

Leukaemia Foundation, together with its sister foundations in Germany, the United States and Switzerland, had already invested more than â‚Ź200 million in scientific research and infrastructure support with the funding of more than 1,000 projects. For example, the Josep Carreras Foundation in Germany provided â‚Ź600,000 funding for a project focused on optimising therapies for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, the most common form of the disease in children. This project was undertaken in 40 Spanish, and more than a hundred German hospitals.

From 1990 until 2015 the Josep Carreras Foundation also funded the international E. D. Thomas / Josep Carreras Grant for young researchers. Their research was focused on a project to gain new insights into leukaemia and other cancerous blood diseases and the treatments for them. Today it continues to support young researchers by funding grants together with the European Hematology Association.

3 BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY Because we want to find a compatible donor for everyone We wanted all leukaemia patients without compatible relations to have the chance of receiving a transplant so in 1991, the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation establish the Bone Marrow Donor Registry in Spain. Until then Spanish patients did not have access to the donors on the registers which other developed western countries had already created. At the present time, our Bone Marrow Donor Register includes more than 200,000 bone marrow donors and around 60,000 units of umbilical cord blood stored in Spain.

WE’RE STILL UNSTOPPABLE Transplants of umbilical cord blood are common amongst both children and adults suffering from leukaemia. Around 70% of searches for a compatible donor made by REDMO (Bone Marrow Donor Registry) also include the possibility of finding a unit of umbilical cord blood as well as bone marrow.

4 APARTMENTS FOR PATIENT’S FAMILIES During treatment we provide a home for families with few resources

Long-term reception apartments Leukaemia patients often have to undergo a bone marrow transplant or an umbilical cord blood transplant. For this patients have to spend a long time in hospital, in many cases far from their homes. It is very important that they can depend on the help and company of their families at this time.

For patients and their families whose homes are far away and whose resources are limited, the Foundation has 6 reception apartments which are available free of charge. They are near the main hospitals where transplants are performed, within the city of Barcelona.

Since 1994, more than 250 families from many parts of Spain and countries such as Andorra, Argentina, Morocco, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Romania, have benefitted from this service.

9

Reception apartments for patients receiving home-based or outpatient medical attention Many leukaemia patients who must undergo a transplant reside in the same city in which they are to receive treatment or in outlying districts. This means that they can recover in their own homes. But it is often the case that their homes are too far away, in terms of the time it would take to get to the hospital in the event of an emergency. If such patients have to stay in hospital it means two things: firstly the occupation of a hospital bed that could be given to another patient, and secondly, that the patient can not enjoy the benefits of being in more comfortable and private surroundings. In Barcelona, the Josep Carreras Foundation, has the first reception apartment in Spain for

ClĂ udia, a patient staying in a reception apartment near the Hospital ClĂnic in Barcelona. This apartment was left to the Foundation in a will.

10

the exclusive use of transplant patients receiving home-based medical attention. This makes it possible for such patients to be in a more intimate environment, with the continuous presence of a family member, under the constant surveillance of a team of nurses and with all the comforts of home.

Online medical consultation service Patients suffering from malignant blood diseases have a free, online medical consultation service available to them so they can answer any doubts they might have about the disease or its treatment.

MAKING A WILL IS A RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO

Making a will is always advisable to make your last wishes known and to make things easier for the family. It is not a question of age. It is a responsible thing to do which saves expense and future worries for the people you most love. It is a favour for your descendants and to yourself. And you can always change it without having to explain anything to anyone. So making a will is a way of thinking about what you have and who will use it best.

If you do not make a will‌ If there are no heirs and no will, the estate passes to the State.

There are three kinds of will‌ Open or nuncupative will: the testator or testatrix expresses his or her will orally or in writing before a notary public.

Closed or sealed will: submitted to the notary public in a sealed envelope. Nobody knows what is in it until it is opened. Handwritten will: written and signed by hand. The heirs must vouch for its authenticity before notary public.

My legacy is for my family, but I’m going to leave the apartment to the Foundation to make life more comfortable

for patients fighting leukaemia

I would like my little contribution to go towards

finding a cure for leukaemia

If I help with the fight against leukaemia while I’m alive, why not continue to do so when I’m

not there?

HOW TO INCLUDE THE JOSEP CARRERAS FOUNDATION IN YOUR WILL

There are various ways of including the Foundation in your will depending on your circumstances:

If you want to leave a legacy

You can leave a specific item that you think might help us achieve our aim: “I leave the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation the sum of €XXXXX to be used in achieving the Foundation’s aims.”

If you want to leave your estate to more than one person or institution

You can name the Josep Carreras Foundation as co-heir, indicating in the will the percentage of the estate you wish to bequeath.

If you have no heirs

You can name the Josep Carreras Foundation as sole legatee: “I name the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation as sole legatee of my entire estate to be used in achieving the Foundation’s aims.”

Although there have been great scientific advances and the prognosis and treatment of leukaemia has improved substantially, today we still lose half of all adult patients and one in five of all children. Your support will help us to continue advancing in our fight against leukaemia.

If you have already made a will‌ After making sure that your loved ones are cared for, would you consider modifying your will to leave a part to fight against leukaemia and help to make the disease 100% curable in the future? If so, you only need to mention it in your will.

Thanks to the help of people who have remembered the fight against leukaemia when writing their wills we have been able to achieve a great deal over the last five years (2011-2015):

Care for patients • We have made six reception apartments available to patients and 146 patients and their families have been able to use them during treatment. • We have dealt with 11,322 consultations by patients seeking a second medical opinion, information and guidance.

Bone marrow donor register

Scientific research

• We have started 4,236 searches for donors of bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood for Spanish patients and patients abroad who need a transplant but do not have a compatible donor in their own families.

We have been able to build the first European research centre, and one of the few such centres in the world, devoted exclusively to research into leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases. There are more than ten ground breaking lines of research in progress with more than 130 people involved between researchers and clinical staff throughout the various hospital centres.

• We have found 2,310 compatible donors so that bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood transplants can be carried out.

OUR UNDERTAKING TO YOU

Our undertaking is to faithfully fulfil the wishes expressed in each will and to do so in a diligent manner, collaborating with all the parties and observing all legal and fiscal obligations.

Any contribution we receive from you will be administered efficiently, with discretion and respect for your wishes, ensuring that all contributions are used to the maximum effect in our fight against leukaemia. Inheritances and legacies received by the Josep Carreras Foundation are administered in the following way:

We act with total transparency

Financial investments (shares, investment funds, etc.): are sold when it is thought that maximum profit can be obtained. Cash and bank deposits (current accounts, deposit accounts): are transferred to the funds of the Josep Carreras Foundation and are used for the various purposes described above.

Real estate (houses, apartments, business premises, land, etc.): these are valued by an official organisation of recognised prestige and placed on the market at the valued price. If they are located near hospitals they will be used as reception apartments.

Confidentiality

We will always respect your privacy because we understand that your will is an absolutely personal document

With respect

Your decision above all

Other goods: if they are of special value (jewellery, works of art, etc.) they are valued and auctioned by official organisations. Items which might have a sentimental value (photos, documents, etc.) remain with the family. Items of no economic value are donated to charity organisations.

We will always respect your decisions because we understand that what counts most for you is your family and the ones you love

We respect your decision about the estate you decide to leave

19

NOTIFYING A WILL OR LEGACY

How does the Josep Carreras Foundation know that someone has mentioned them in their will? The notary public who authorised the will is obliged, upon being appraised of the testator’s demise, to notify the not-for profit organisations that are mentioned in the will. Nevertheless, if you decide to name the Josep Carreras Foundation in your will, we would ask you to tell us in whichever way is most convenient for you:

* These notes refer to laws in Spain. It is important that you inform yourself well about the laws in the country in which you live. Laws concerning inheritance and legacy vary greatly between them.

HAVE NO DOUBTS

The difference between an inheritance and a legacy Inheritance An inheritance is a combination of rights, goods and obligations which, on a person’s death, is transmitted to their successors. It is divided into three parts*: • The “strict legitimate” third: shared equally amongst heirs-at-law. If one of them has died their descendants inherit in equal measure by right of representation. • The third of an estate apportionable at will to any legal heir: shared amongst heirs-at-law, but not equally. Some may benefit more than others. • The freely disposable third of an estate: the testator has complete liberty to decide who or which not-for-profit juridical person will inherit.

Legacy The identification of one or more goods or determined rights left to a person or not-forprofit institution or organisation. These goods can be an item such as a house, car, work of art, or jewellery, or a right, a benefit, the reception of a repaid loan, a percentage of the estate. The legacy can never, under any circumstances, prejudice the legitimate inheritance of the heirs-at-law.

Who are the heirs-at-law? They are those that the law recognises as having the right to inherit, at least, a part of the legitimate third. The heirsat-law are the testator’s children and their descendants (natural, by adoption, matrimonial and non-matrimonial), and by default, their parents and ascendants. A widow or widower will inherit in the manner established by law. If there are no heirs-at-law, voluntary heirs may acquire the entire estate and if they coincide with the heirs-at-law they may acquire all that which left after the “strict legitimate” third has been distributed.

What is an executor? An executor is a person designated by the testator in their will to administer their goods and divide them amongst the heirs in accordance with the stipulations established in the document. The role is voluntary.

What happens if I don’t make a will?

If I have made a will, what do I have to do to include the Josep Carreras Foundation? You only need to contact a notary public to make such a modification.

If I change my mind, can I change my will? Of course. You can change your will as often as you like. The valid version is the last one.

Are some organisations exempted from inheritance tax? The Josep Carreras Foundation is a juridical person under the fiscal regime of Law 49/2002 of 23 December, on notfor-profit entities and fiscal incentives for patronage. As such, being a not-for-profit organisation and declared as being of public utility, income we receive through inheritance and legacy is not subject to inheritance tax.

Heirs are obliged by law to receive notification and possession of the legacy. Notary publics are similarly obliged to communicate provisions of this kind to the competent administrative organs exercising supervision over foundations.
