Als Dieter Funk mit seinem Unternehmen 1992 in München begann, gründete er eine unabhängige Marke für große und auffällige Brillen. Von dort führte ihn sein Weg über funktionale Brillen für den Extremsport weiter zu eher klassischen Ansätzen. 2002 verlegte Dieter Funk seine Firma in das kleine Dorf Kinsau (ca. 80 km südwestlich von München, nahe des Ammersees) und damit in ein wunderschönes altes Bauernhaus mit viel Platz. Dort hatte er die Möglichkeit, seinen Traum zu verwirklichen und seine eigene Brillenmanufaktur aufzubauen. Er suchte nach alten Brillenmachern, die ihm ihre Handwerkskunst lehren konnten. Zunächst waren die älteren Herren zwar eher skeptisch, aber bald schon kamen sie sehr gerne nach Kinsau, um Ihr Wissen weiterzugeben. Somit änderte sich die Unternehmensstrategie: Mit der eigenen Produktion konnten die Entwürfe von Acetatbrillen klarer umgesetzt werden. Anfangs noch mit klassischen Pantografen, erleichtern seit 2014 CNC-Fräsen die Arbeit. Doch bei den bis zu 170 Arbeitsschritten, vom Zuschnitt bis zum Polieren und Montieren, ist nach wie vor menschliches Können, Sorgfalt und Erfahrung gefragt. Das alte Bauernhaus in der Herzogstrasse wird in Zukunft als Schulungszentrum für Augenoptiker und Brillenmacher dienen (Start geplant für 2019).
When Dieter Funk started his company in Munich in 1992, he founded an independent brand for big and conspicuous spectacles. From there, his path led him to functional glasses for extreme sports and further to a more classic approach. In 2002, Dieter Funk moved his company to the small village Kinsau (approx. 80 km south-west of Munich, in the south of Germany) and to a beautiful old farmhouse with a lot of space. There, he had the possibility of making his dream come true and build up his own frame-making workshop. He looked for old frame-makers to teach him their craftsmanship. At first, the elder gentleman were rather sceptic about this, but soon enough they enjoyed coming to Kinsau in order to pass on their knowledge. Thus, the company's strategy changed: Due to the in-house production facilities, the drafts of acetate spectacle-frames could be converted much better and clearer. At the beginning, this was done with classic pantographs, but since 2014, CNC-mortising-machines facilitate the working processes. Nevertheless, it takes up to 170 processing steps - from the cutting to size to the polishing - and a high level of human skills, care and experience. The old farmhouse will be used as a training centre for opticians and frame-makers (the start is planned for 2019 Ă FUNK Campus).
FUNK liefert die handgemachten Brillen an unabhängige Qualitätsoptiker weltweit. Daher ist es wenig überraschend, dass das alte Bauernhaus inzwischen zu klein geworden ist. Ganz typisch für Dieter Funk und seine Frau Sashee Schuster, haben sie den Neubau des neuen Headquarters architektonisch selbst designt. Am 15. Juli 2017 feierte FUNK Eyewear das 25. Jubiläum mit der Eröffnung des neuen Headquarters in Kinsau, Bayern. Dieser

Unternehmens: die Brillenmanufaktur. Hier stellt FUNK seine Brillen mit Leidenschaft, Philosophie und großer Handwerkskunst her. Heute werden in der Manufaktur Korrektur- und Sonnenbrillen der Kollektionen „Dieter Funk“ und „Sashee Schuster“ hergestellt. 50 Mitarbeiter insgesamt – davon 11 in der Produktion – gewährleisten mit Können, Sorgfalt und Erfahrung die hohe Qualität der Brillen. Zusätzlich zu dem Sehzentrum in Kinsau, führt FUNK noch augenoptische Fachgeschäfte in München, in Berlin Mitte, sowie ganz neu in Wien, 7. Bezirk.
FUNK supplies its spectacle-frames to independent high-quality opticians world-wide. Therefore, it is not much of a surprise that the old farmhouse has meanwhile become too small. Very typically for Dieter Funk and his wife Sashee Schuster, they did the design of the new building themselves. On the 15th July 2017, FUNK Eyewear celebrated its 25th anniversary with the opening of its new headquarters in Kinsau, Bavaria, Germany. This new building houses FUNK's administration, its warehouse, its own optical centre and most importantly, the company's heart: its frame-making workshop. This is where FUNK manufactures its spectacle frames with passion, philosophy and highly-elaborate craftsmanship. Today, correctional glasses as well as sunglasses of the collections "Dieter Funk" and "Sashee Schuster" are being manufactured in the workshop. 50 employees - of which eleven work in the workshop - ensure the spectacle frames' topquality - with a huge amount of skill, experience and passion. In addition to the optical centre in Kinsau, FUNK runs its own shops in Munich, as well as in Berlin Mitte and very new in Vienna.

Die Acetatfassungen dieser Kollektion bieten aufgrund der speziellen Polierungen außergewöhnliche Haptik und Glanz. Durch eigene Entwicklung werden individuelle Acetatfarben hergestellt. Fassungen, die Acetat und Titan kombinieren sind wahrliche Blickfänge und spiegeln die Leidenschaft, mit der sie per Hand gefertigt werden wider. Auch die Kombination Acetat und Federbronze formt einmalige Modelle: ultraleicht, hoch-flexibel und zeitlos. Massive, strenge Formen & klare Schlichtheit bestimmen das Design dieser Kollektion – der Akzent liegt auf männlichmarkant. The frames of the collection "Dieter Funk" are made by hand in FUNK's frame-making workshop in Kinsau, Bavaria, Germany. The manufacturing process of the Dieter Funk models is highly complex and elaborate - therefore demanding precise use of machines and conscientious handicraft skills. Due to special polishing methods, this collection's acetate spectacle-frames offer exceptional haptics and gloss. Individual acetate-colours are achieved by in-house research and development. Spectacle-frames combining acetate and titan are true eye-catchers and reflect the passion by which they are manually produced. Also the combination of acetate and spring bronze results in unique models: ultralight, highly-flexible and timeless. Massive, strict shapes and clear simplicity define this collection's design - emphasising male bold style. In addition, they depict a retrospective of the history of spectacle-frames: classic and timeless, always offering the certain kind of something and inseparably connected with the inspiring design of today and the future. The numerous processing steps in the frame-making workshop in Kinsau create a premium product with a long lifespan.

Im FUNK Headquarter in Kinsau kann man den Brillenmachern aus Leidenschaft bei ihrer Arbeit über die Schulter schauen und sich selbst davon überzeugen, um was für ein filigranes Handwerk es sich beim Brillenmachen tatsächlich handelt. Auch die Vielzahl der einzelnen Stationen gibt Aufschluss darüber, wie viele Arbeitsschritte tatsächlich in einer einzigen Brillenfassung stecken.
At FUNK’s headquarter in Kinsau you can observe the passionate frame-workers at work and convince yourself of the filligree craftsmanship that making spectacle frames actually is. Also the high number of individual stations provides insight into the fact how many processing steps are actually necessary to produce one single pair of specs.

Dieter Funk‘s persönliche Sammelleidenschaft umfasst neben Schallplatten noch zwei für seine Manufaktur essentielle Dinge: Acetatplatten und Maschinen. Das Acetatlager der Funk Brillenmanufaktur umfasst an die 8.000 kg Acetat, worin auch sehr seltene und bis zu 30 Jahre alte Acetatplatten enthalten sind. Diese werden dann für limitierte Sonderauflagen verwendet. Die für die Herstellung der Brillenfassungen benötigten Maschinen hat Dieter Funk teilweise speziell umgebaut oder neu konzipiert. Dieter Funk is a passionate collector of records, but also of two more things that are essential to his workshop: Acetate plates and machines. The stock of FUNK’s frame-making workshop comprises approx. 8,000 kg acetate, which also includes rare and up to 30-years-old plates. These will only be used for limited editions. The machines necessary for manufacturing spectacle frames, were partly especially rebuilt or newly designed by Dieter Funk. The picture on the right shows two of our polishing drums.
