Living Wales AUGUST 2009

ELL, another month flies by and there still isn't much of a sign of the Barbecue Summer they promised us. In fact I would go as far as to say it has been more Winter-like than Summer-like. Well fingers crossed I guess for an Indian Summer! Cheer up though, there is still plenty to see and do in August and September to while away the hours. A trip to the market town of Pontypool and its local businesses and attractions is a must visit as well as finding out what is happening in our cities and towns over the forthcoming months. Looking for fresh air or somewhere different to take the children over the Summer holidays? Dare Valley Country Park offers an array of activities and outdoor pursuits to keep the whole family happy. From mountain-biking to walking, the park offers scenic countryside with a beautiful lake in which to enjoy a picnic (weather permitting) and an impressive cafe to relax and enjoy a hot snack or hearty meal. Once again, the city of Newport has won the coveted Wales in Bloom accolade. This was achieved with the help and assistance of the local community, some of whom we feature on pages 18 and 19. If the weather is keeping you indoors, then why not consider a refurbishment of your home or at least part of it. How about a new kitchen or carpet or even curtains or upholstery. These changes will enhance your home at a relatively low cost thanks to our advertisers in our ‘Homes’ section. Our food review this month looks at the wonderful Inn at the Elm Tree in St Brides. Recently refurbished and under new management, the restaurant now offers a mouth-watering menu in beautiful surroundings. A bumper theatre and competitions month is one of the main themes of the August edition, and of course Living Wales wouldn't be complete without advice on where to dine and what to wear this coming season. See you in September..

Steeped in industrial history Not just famous right across the world for its historic industrial importance, and sporting prowess on the rugby field, the town of Pontypool also has everything you need for a Grand Day Out. WORDS Patricia Clarke PICTURES Nick Clarke

The beautiful park and Pontypool.

N the edge of the Brecon Beacons, and just nine miles from the city of Newport, the esrtwhile small valley town of Pontypool has been transformed, and has attractions in abundance for those wanting a mixture of old and new. There are lovely walks along the tow path of the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal from the canal basin at Pont-y-moel, mountains and hills to climb with views across the countryside to die for. The historical extremes of the blackest industrial days of iron and coal, to the lovely, (and nowadays very collectable),Japanware, have been replaced in this now colourful town with high street shops and a supermarket, also retaining the well loved indoor and recently extended outdoor markets. Of course you can't mention Pontypool without referring to 'The Pontypool Front Row' and the fact that the town's rugby team play on the most beautifully located pitch in Wales - Pontypool Park - with its impressive Park Gates, given to Major John Hanbury by

the Duchess of Marlborough in 1703. Here it is possible to spend the whole day walking or taking a relaxing seat to admire the lovely surroundings. If you get caught in the rain, or you fancy a swim, cup of coffee or five minutes peace from the kids, why not partake of the facilities available in the newly refurbished Leisure Centre, now renamed 'Pontypool Active Living Centre', which is also in the park, and includes a tots play area, amongst its gyms, sports hall and much more. HISTORY Well documented, this town has been steeped in industry for hundreds of years, mostly coal and iron until, in 1685, Ironmaster Major John Hanbury took over the family iron production business, he developed a rolling mill which produced a thinner kind of metal from iron. This became known as Tinplate, and was used to make kitchenware. In 1732 Thomas Allgood developed enamelling by imitating

Pontypool the lacquer used to decorate furniture in Japan since the 12th century, coated the tinplate with it, and found that the process hardened the finished product. Its most famous decorators, the Barker family painted the enamelled product with the most beautiful designs, and hey presto! universal demand for Japanware put Pontypool on the map. The stable block of Hanbury's former home (now St. Alban's R.C. Comprehensive school) houses the town's museum which contains a guide through Pontypool's history, with examples of Japanware included in the Barker Gallery. WHAT'S IN A NAME The name Pontypool has a trio of possible connotations, for as well as the obvious Pont-y-pwl, which should have a double 'L' if it means 'Bridge over the pool', there is a suggestion that it should be Pont Poel, which is 'Bridge over the swampy pond'. Lastly it could have its origins in the name Hywel as Pont ap Hywel, in other words 'Hywel's Bridge', but hey! - who really knows? - like so many other languages it probably evolved from one to the other. Another interesting name comes in Trevethin, which, to begin with, means Settlement (Tre), then 'Fethin' took a bit of investigation and turns out to be 'Feddyn ' the Welsh for army. Makes sense for a Roman Army to be billetted this high, as the fabulous views of which I speak are right on the top of this mountain. My favourite of the month, as

Pontypool on a bustling market day

readers of an earlier edition will know, and I make no apologies for its repetition, is Cwmfrwdoer, which I suspect should have a double 'F', and it means 'Valley of the cold Torrent' - brrrrrrrr! MUSTS TO VIEW To begin with, a walk through the top of Pontypool Park will take you to Penygarn and The American Gardens and the astoundingly huge Canadian Redwood trees which, along with other species were introduced in the mid 19th century. The gardens were converted from woodlands by Capel Hanbury Leigh in the 1840s, by employing men laid off from the iron industry. Paths were cleared, stone walls built and the now fabulous Rhododendrons and Azaleas were planted, along with the building of the Lodge, which I always compared with the witch's house made of cake in Hansel and Gretel well I’ve always been imaginative! Onwards and literally upwards the path will take you to the Folly Tower. This was originally a shooting shelter built by John Hanbury in 1765, and was rebuilt by Capel Hanbury Leigh in 1831. It was here, around a bonfire, at the Folly Tower that 20,000 people celebrated the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935, but unfortunately it was

feared to be a landmark for German bombers trying to find the Royal Ordnance Factory near Usk, which is why it was demolished in 1940. Now splendidly rebuilt the Tower was reopened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1994, and it is said that you can see Pontypool Ski Slope seven counties from this spot. Back in the park is the 18th century Grotto, or Grotto Cregyn, an amazing summer house decorated with shells and bones; the inspiration of Molly, wife of Capel Hanbury Leigh. Reached via a steep slope, this used to be regularly open to the public, but so many shells were stolen it has now been enclosed and is available to view from May September and Bank Holidays. Feeling more adventurous? Need to do something new? Well why not visit the Pontypool Ski Centre situated in the Park? With its 230 metre dry ski slope, try a lesson in staying upright with your feet attached to two narrow slats! Eek! not my cuppa, but you could become the next Eddie The Eagle! heh heh! - Welcome to Pontypool!

Jazz in the Park at Pontypool The first weekend of September will see the return of Pontypool Jazz in the Park. Now in the ninth year, the festival has built up a huge following and plans on being better than ever. Last year the event had to be cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, but the festival committee plan to bring it back with a traditionally Welsh flavour themed as ‘Jazz from Wales’ providing the tremendous number of hugely talented Welsh-born jazz musicians with an exclusive platform to display their creative talents. For all jazz lovers it will be an opportunity to appreciate the talent on our doorsteps and to engage young jazz musicians making a great impact on many enthusiasts. The Reverend Harald Thomas MBE, Chairman of the Festival is absolutely delighted at the decision of the Council to support this major event in Torfaen. He said: “Offering our theme as Jazz from Wales ensures that we are supporting musicians in the principality, recognising the tremendous enthusiasm, and their willingness to be part of an event of this calibre.” Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Regeneration stated, “Festivals such as Jazz in the Park are an important event for our Community and highlights Pontypool’s place on the tourist and cultural map as well as showcasing local and Wales wide talent.” The festival line up includes The Root Doctors, Capital City Jazz Orchestra, Byron Jones, Grace & Danger, Mike Markee, Bluesy Susey, WonderBrass and many others... Newport In Bloom

Newport win Wales In Bloom Congratulations to the city of Newport who have won the Wales in Bloom title for the second year running. Of course, they couldn’t have done it without the help of all the people who participate and put so much hard work into Newport in Bloom. The Newport In Bloom competition has been running for a number of years and as each year passes the standard and presentation of the competition steadily increases. 2009 was no exception with a wonderful display of hanging baskets and floral arrangements that all helped to make Newport a wonderful place to live, work and visit. Of course, its not all about flowers, it is also about environmental issues and the residents taking pride in their city. Since its formation, Newport in Bloom has helped to improve the local environment substantially and is now highly regarded for the quality of its public parks and open spaces, as well as our residents’ gardens. Each year, some of the winners of the Newport in Bloom competition are selected to help form part of Newport’s official judging routes for Wales in Bloom and Britain in Bloom Competitions

The residents of Newport are key to the city’s year on year success in this national competition, as the Judges expect a high level of public involvement in all the environmental projects that take place in Newport's communities. Newport in Bloom is an annual competition, but as any keen gardener will know, the preparation continues all year round. This is clearly evident when the judges of Newport in Bloom had to make difficult choices and decisions when choosing winners from a variety of categories. Categories such as 'Best Flower Display using Containers, Tubs and Baskets' and 'Best Wildlife Garden,' were amongst the many categories within the competition as well as 'Best Front Garden - Flower Display,' 'Champions,' and 'Best Flower Display - Residential/Nursing Homes/ Sheltered Housing.'

Best Front Garden - Flower Display MR Bruno Bellandi of Bridevale Gardens, St Brides won first prize in the class for Best Front Garden - Flower Display and was informed of his win via the Chairman of Newport in Bloom. "I was so taken aback when I heard the news that I didn't quite grasp the fact that we had

18

Living Wales AUGUST 2009

actually won," said Pat Bellandi who took the call. The Bellandi's entered the competition last year and they came third, so to win the title this year is a huge achievement. Bruno takes great pride in his garden where he has lived with his wife for 25 years. His real passion for gardening only really came about when he retired and wanted a hobby to help fill his time. At 73 years of age, he gets his inspiration by reading gardening books and browsing around local garden centres. As well as a beautiful display of geraniums, begonias, busy-lizzies, sweet-peas, marigolds and many more flowers in tubs and baskets, he also is an excellent topiarian. The judges of the competition remarked that the garden was 'breathtaking' and many people come to admire his handy-work, even those who stay as guests in the guest house opposite. He will of course be entering again next year, but this time into the championship class - good luck both!

Best Flower Display - Residential/Nursing Homes /Sheltered Housing - 3rd place SHELTERED Housing complex in the Gaer, Newport won third place in the above category. The Chartered housing complex known as Stratford House use combined

skills from the residents to produce flower displays that have in previous years gained them first place. "In 2006, we came third in the category for best flower display which enabled us to enter the Championship the following year. In 2007, we came third in the Championship, and we have a lovely silver plaque to prove it," said Jill Pitman the team manager of residents gardening committee. All of the tenants get involved with helping to do the planting and Charter Housing help with supplying hanging baskets and tubs etc. The residents have a committee that ensures all the planting runs like clockwork and have set up a fund that enables them each year to buy flowers. The beautiful display that adorns the entrance hall, walls and fences include begonias, clematis, fuchsias, geraniums, lobelia, buzy lizzies

and many more. When asked if they would be entering again next year, they declared 'Of course, we are old faithfuls.' As you can see by the pictures, we certainly hope that they do..

Champions Class MARK and Michelle Gane are the proud owners of the Milton Hotel in Llanwern. The couple who are from Newport have been at the hotel for six years and each year enter the Newport In Bloom competition. In 2007 they were the winners of Newport In Bloom Champions Class and winners of Wales in Bloom 2008. This year they also scooped 1st place in the Champions category and 1st place in the Small Hotel Class of Wales in Bloom. Mark and Michelle do all the planting and tending of the plants and flowers all of which look absolutely stunning and certainly attract admirers from outside the area as well as appreciation from the local community. The decking and outside area is festooned with beautiful flowers, pots and hanging baskets as well as a stunning bird house as an eye-catching feature. The Milton hotel itself is open 7 days a week and offers

quintessential cuisine The Inn At The Elm Tree, St Brides

Exquisite flavours to dine for With new owners and new Head Chef the The Inn At The Elm Tree in Newport is fast becoming one of the city’s finest restaurants.... if not THE finest. WORDS Anne-Marie Smith PICTURES Nick Clarke

THE Inn At The Elm Tree is an impressive 19th Century building that stands on the edge of St. Brides in Newport. The original barn has been transformed from a renowned restaurant to an 'Inn.' Officially re-opened on 1st January 2000, the Inn at the Elm Tree claims to be Wales' first 'Inn' of the Century. Father and son proprietors Peter and Paul Matthews recently took over the management of the Inn which has now been completely refurbished. The interior has been tastefully remodelled whilst retaining its original charm and character. As well as a comfortable lounge area, there is also a large conservatory and restaurant that serves traditional and modern British cuisine with a worldwide influence. The owners and staff at the Elm Tree are attentive and courteous and more than helpful when assisting with your menu choices. Chef Proprietor, Peter has over 45 years of experience in kitchens including George V hotel Paris, Chef for Pope John Paul II and cooking for numerous International Royalty & Officials including Prince Charles. Under Peter’s guidance, new Head Chef Nathan Brown has only been at the Inn for two weeks, but brings a wealth of experience. Previously Head Chef at the Park House in Cardiff he also worked with the great Hell’s Kitchen supremo Marco Pierre White. With 20 years experience, he was approached by Peter and Paul to work at the Elm Tree. “I accepted the job as I was so impressed by the building and the great potential the restaurant had. I was given a blank canvas to work with and I am starting with basics that I know diners will love, with additional dishes introduced to keep the menu fresh and exciting. We try to use as much local produce as possible and offer dishes without overcomplicating the menu,” said Nathan. With credentials such as these, we couldn’t wait to get on with the food. The Starters With both a lunch time and A La Carte Menu to choose from, my dining companion Nick and I were spoilt for choice and had to ask for advice from the very helpful waitress. It was a largely unpretentious menu offering a choice to please and cater for all tastes. The Cheese Souffle (my choice) was served on a parmesan cream and was beautifully presented surrounded with parmesan shavings, cherry tomatoes, olives and a side salad. The Souffle itself was very light and fluffy and literally melted in the mouth. Nick chose the generous portion of Sardines served with a fresh salad of chopped tomatoes, olives, lettuce, parsley and spring onions with a vingerette dressing. Very tasty and again the execution of this dish was above and beyond our expectations. A side dish of Mixed Bread Selection with Butter, Oil & Balsamic was also served along with our starters. The three different flavours of bread

26

Living Wales AUGUST 2009

included Sundried Tomatoes, Green Olive and Garlic and Herb, were warm and crispy and a delightful accompaniment to the meal. The Mains With advice from the Chef, our main course choices were Fish Pie and Pork Belly. The Fish Pie consisted of salmon, smoked hake, cod, prawns, and sea bass served on top of a portion of creamy mashed potato. This was indeed a delightful meal accompanied by a beautiful creamy, rich sauce with each fish adding a different flavour to the dish. The Pork Belly I can only describe as ‘Awesome’. Chunky pieces of meat with mouth-watering crispy crackling that was out of this world! Served with a generous portion of shredded cabbage and wonderful Dauphinoise Potatoes this was a dish that we literally fought over for the last mouthful! Along with the main dishes, we had a side order of Cauliflower Cheese this was deliciously cheesy and ample to share. The Desserts I chose the selection of Celtic and Continental Cheese with Assorted Water

Biscuits and Nick, the Raspberry Bavarois. The cheeses were served on a Welsh slate platter with celery and grapes and provided a fine selection of wonderful cheeses including brie, smoked bavarian, mature cheddar and two welsh favourites Y-Fenni and St.Illtyd. The Raspberry Bavarois was a light Mousse with Forest Berries (raspberries and blueberries) laced with Coulis & Double Cream. A very traditional light dessert tasting very fresh and perfect for the Summer as well as a wonderful end to the delicious meal. Conclusion They have certainly achieved what they set out to do. The presentation of each dish was excellent but even this was out-done by the flavours which set our tasebuds dancing with delight. The Inn At The Elm Tree served fine food, in season, at a reasonable cost that over and above exceeded our expectations.

recipe WHISKY

ARDBEG 17 Yr OLD Single Malt, Islay THE king of the single malt, the Ardbeg 17 yr old is now very rare. Much less peaty than others in the Ardbeg stable, this is a great whisky, but is sadly becoming very thin on the ground as demand increases and supply runs low. The rarity of this whisky comes from the fact that the old Ardbeg distillery closed in the early 80s but was re-opened when taken over by Glenmorangie which sparked the revival of Ardbeg's fortunes. Ardbeg was officially established by the MacDougall family in 1815, the same year as Laphroaig came into official existence a few miles along the road. Ardbeg is generally heavily peated, with a turfy smoke and seaspray character predominant in most bottlings, but this is a different malt altogether. Very soft on the palate, this malt should be consumed on its own, no water or ice and this just takes away from the subtle taste and warm finish. If you can find a bottle, buy two and keep one, because at over £200 this will certainly go up in value but a must have for special occasions.

Welsh Cider

ROSIE’S WICKED WASP www.bluebell.uk.eu.org LAST month we sampled Rosie’s Triple D Cider by cider maker Steve Hughes in Llandegla near Wrexham. This month we try another from the same producer, Rosie’s Wicked Wasp Still Dry Cider. In 2004 Steve began planting a cider orchard and they now grow 44 different varieties of apple. This cider is produced from 100% scratted and pressed apples and Rosie the Jack Russell checks the orchard every day! Steve won CAMRA Bottle Cider Champion 2006 with Rosie's Triple D which has also won 3rd as Dry Cider at the Royal Bath & West 2007. This is a still, whisky cask cider from Llandegla and at 7.4% it is certainly one to limit in quantities. Very dry on the tongue but soft and mellow. It’s a dry cider but surprisingly light with an initial sweetness before the dry bite kicks in. This is definitely one for people who like dry wine etc, easy to drink and quite fruity, but watch the sore head the next morning.

Cauliflower Cheese INGREDIENTS 2 medium cauliflowers, outer leaves removed and broken up into florets (small pieces) 3 cups (1.5 pints) full cream milk 5oz (150g) Caerphilly cheese (or your favourite alternative. Aim for something like a cheddar, not too strong), grated 2 slices of slightly stale white bread, crusts removed 1oz (30g) butter 1oz (30g) plain/general purpose flour 1 tablespoon (10g) fresh parsley, chopped METHOD 1. Begin by boiling the cauliflower florets in salted water for 5 minutes. Drain and refresh with cold water. 2. Make a white sauce: Melt the butter, then stir in the flour so you have a yellow paste (roux). Cook this paste gently for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and add the milk a little at a time, stirring well. If you add the milk a bit at a time you should avoid getting lumps. Bring the sauce to the boil and simmer until it has thickened. 3. Stir 100g of your cheese into the sauce. Stir in the chopped parsley. Check the seasoning. 4. Whizz up the bread slices in a food processor so you have breadcrumbs. Don't make the crumbs too fine, as you get a pleasing crunch from the slightly bigger bits. 5. Put the cauliflower in a baking dish, pour over the cheese sauce, sprinkle with the remaining 50g cheese, and top with a layer of breadcrumbs. Bake in an oven heated to 180c (gas mark 4) for 30-40 minutes, until it is golden and bubbly and crunchy on the top. 6. Serve with a green salad, or as an accompaniment to meat dishes. NOTE: You can also add a touch of wholegrain mustard to this recipe for a little extra bite and lightly dust the top with grated nutmeg. www.livingwalesmag.co.uk

Dame Edna Everage at the Proms THE last night at the Proms at the Cardiff International Arena includes Aussie legend Dame Edna Everage who has been one of the most idolised and admired women in show business for many a year. Famed for her catchphrases such as “Hello Possums” and “Call Me Old Fashioned”, Dame Edna soon became TV’s most loved housewife. Still in 2009 she holds this regard amongst the world’s public, and has become the face of leading make-up brand M.A.C. Cosmetics. From sell out world tours to hit TV shows, there is no denying Dame Edna is a natural born star! Sharing the bill with the glamorous Dame Edna Everage is Australia’s Number One Cultural Supremo Sir Les Patterson. Sir Les is a politician by trade and has had many important and influential roles for his native country, these have included Chairman of the Australian Cheese Board, Minister Of The Yarts (arts) and Minister for Sport with special responsibility to keep sports rampantly heterosexual and ‘blokey’. Sir Les will once again be performing Peter And The Shark, a parody on Prokofiev’s Peter And The Wolf. This time in a different guise, Peter is a bronzed surfer played on a piccolo trumpet, his friend is now a laughing kookaburra played on a soprano saxophone, and the duck has become a duck-billed platypus whose pleasant theme is played on the bassoon! Carl Davis CBE has composed all of the music, and will be conducting the orchestras that will be the back-drop to all of Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson’s performances. Carl Davis CBE is a world-renowned composer and conductor, he believes that all music has an important place in the world, and this is reflected in the diversification of his concert programming. He has worked on numerous film and TV scores, that included Chaplin’s ‘Mutuals’ (12 short films), released numerous best selling CD’s and DVD’s, as well as composing and conducting music for special events such as the 150th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, where he worked with Sir Paul McCartney, to write ‘Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio’. “This unique collaboration between myself and Barry Humphries was written as a parody on the Proms. Barry and I have waited 28 years to do this concert again, Dame Edna and Sir Les never disappoint.,” Carl Davis CBE said. Accompanying Carl throughout the tour will be some of the UK’s finest orchestras with a 60 piece choir. Carl Davis’ compositions will be performed by The Orchestra of the Scottish Opera, The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra. “This monumentous piece was first performed immediately after the Proms in 1981. It was during recent conversations with Barry Humphries that the suggestion came to revive this fantastic show. I am delighted that Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson agreed to perform in their first tour of the UK,” he added. The Last Night At The Proms will be at the Cardiff International Arena on Friday 25th September. For tickets call the box office on 029 20 22 44 88.

REVIEW Abertillery Blues Festival by Nick Clarke THIS July saw the welcome return of the Abertillery Blues Festival 2009 at Abertillery Park. Two days of blues and rock music, headed up by legendary guitarist Andy Fairweather Low, captivated audiences and provided the Star of the music lovers of South Wales show, Earl with a fabulous weekend of Thomas. entertainment. The crowds were out in great numbers, enjoying themselves during the event which was brilliantly organised by Blaenau Gwent County Council. The weekend included musicians such as Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory, The Oli Brown Band, Jay Tamkin Band, Lightnin’ Willie & The Poorboys, Derrin Nauendorf, Kendall James Band and the Lisa Mills Band, but the stars of the show for me were Earl Thomas & Paddy Milner & The Big Sounds. As soon as Earl himself took centre stage, the energy oozing from the American got the crowd jumping to their feet, dancing and singing along with great exuberance. I think perhaps he should have headlined as when Andy Fairweather Low took the stage the energy levels dropped with the first five songs slower in tempo. The tempo picked up half way through his set but didn’t match the frantic pace of Earl Thomas. Not that this should have been expected from the talented Welshman who, has worked with the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his colourful career, but maybe they should have swapped sets. That said, the music throughout from every artist was excellent and, with people camping and beer flowing during the two day festival, South Wales was treated to a fantastic weekend of blues. Long may it continue.

AUGUST INTERVIEW

interview

Any dream will do! Craig Chalmers first appeared on the BBC programme Any Dream Will Do. Anne-Marie Smith spoke to him about playing the lead role in the touring production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

36

SCOTTISH lad Craig Chalmers wowed audiences last year with his good looks and charm on the BBC programme Any Dream Will Do. Now touring and playing the lead role of Joseph in ‘Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, I spoke to Craig about landing his dream role and how he felt about appearing in such a high profile show. Having landed the lead role of Joseph in the touring production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and soon to appear at the New Theatre in Cardiff, I wanted to know if he had been to the Welsh capital before or indeed any part of Wales. “I have friends in Wales and I find the Welsh people very friendly. Most of my friends are from Swansea, so I know this area quite well”, he said. Craig auditioned for the lead part of Joseph in the West End on the BBC television programme ‘Any Dream Will Do,’ with Andrew Lloyd Webber. A dream opportunity, but how did it come about? “A friend told me that there was a show where they were auditioning for possible Joseph’s. I was reluctant at first as I had auditioned during the 2003 Pop Idol and found that experience very stressful. I also had no experience of theatre work at all. However, I decided to give it a whirl and just went for it. I'm so glad now that I did. I was more into music and was in a couple of local boy bands before I auditioned for the part of Joseph. Working with all the mentors on the show improved my musical ability and I definitely learnt a lot from it. I got into the final 50 of Pop Idol when Andy Scott Lee went through, in Joseph I got to fifth place which was a huge achievement,” said the Scottish laddie. Craig, along with all the other contestants on the show lived together in one big house. How well did that work and were there any rows? “Well, there were a lot of different personalities under one roof, but fortunately there were no disputes. I was the main driving force in rallying them all together to ensure we all got along. Tried to treat the whole experience as a football team and to keep them all motivated. I still keep Living Wales AUGUST 2009

in touch with quite a few of them including Lee Mead (who won the lead title), Chris Barton and Anthony Hanson who are currently working together on an album”, he said. Lee Mead one of the show's contestants and Denise Van Outen one of the judges on the show ‘Any Dream Will Do’ dated each other following the show and recently got married. Did Craig consider getting in there first? “No, it honestly didn’t cross my mind. Good on them I say and it goes to prove that it wasn't a publicity stunt. I have a fiancee Jennifer who I wouldn't swop for the world and we are planning to marry next September in Edinburgh”, he stated. Craig came fifth, and looked to be cast aside, so, following the show, what happened? “I was approached by various people following the show, but took up the offer of playing the lead role in the touring production. When I played in Edinburgh, the show was a sell-out and it was so wonderful to see my name up in lights”, he said proudly. So, when the coat get’s too small or if he decided to break away from the show and take a break I asked what his ideal job would be? “It would have to be something in theatre that would suit my voice and personality. It’s no point saying that I would like to play a certain part if it was totally unsuitable for me. You have to play to your strengths. If I wasn't appearing on stage and in theatre, I would love to be a Sky Sports Presenter. My favourite football team is Manchester United so maybe a job as TV sports presenter might be appealing.” What does he do to relax? I like to watch Man U in the footy and of course I love to spend plenty of time with Jennifer, drink wine and watch DVDs. Catch Craig in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the New Theatre in August. ALIENS IN THE ATTIC (PG, 85MINS)

RELEASED: WEDNESDAY 15TH JULY RATING

***

KEVIN NEALON, ROBERT HOFFMAN, DORIS ROBERTS, TIM MEADOWS

THEY Came From Upstairs, co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbits, is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by kneehigh alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions - while the youngsters’ parents remain clueless about the battle. The film centres around a family that rents a country house in northern Michigan for vacation. When the kids in the family start exploring the house, they discover a group of tiny but menacing aliens that have landed and have plans for taking over the world. Soon, the kids discover that the aliens’ mind-control devices do not work on kids, they take it upon themselves to thwart the invasion plans. This film would seem ridiculous but when you have children of your own, the way you view a film changes. This is short-attention-span theatre, mainly for the kids. Which is a good thing, considering the plot is pretty shaky along with its special fx. “Aliens in the Attic” is geared directly for a child audience. Young kids and teenagers should eat up the story about children who get a chance to save the world. I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone over the age of fifteen, but it is the school holidays and because of this it get’s our thumbs up for movie of the month - maybe not at any other time of year though, but the kids will love it!

PATHWAYS Holistic Therapies has been operating in the small market town of Usk for over four and a half years and offer a wide range of treatments from Thai Style Massage to Reiki. The owner and one of the therapists at Pathway is Rozz Shott whose philosophy is to bring Peace and harmony, self awareness and improved self esteem into people’s lives. Rozz started her career as a nurse, but became aware of and involved in holistic therapies during her nursing career. When Rozz retired, she decided to follow her dream and open up her own therapy centre. As well as offering a wide range of therapies, some of the rooms are also used by physiotherapists and hypnotherapists who offer alternative treatments. Clients come from the local area as well as further afield as Pathways is the only holistic centre in the immediate area. With this in mind, Rozz hasn’t ruled out the possibility of opening another one elsewhere or even expanding in the Usk area. She also wants to introduce work-shops such as mindfulness groups and lifemanagement courses as a way of helping to alleviate stress and getting like-minded people together for discussion and to participate in activities. “I provide a place where people can come and improve physically and emotionally. Life these days is like running on a motorway and desperately trying to find the exit. I even encourage

Happiness in the workplace A recent survey shows an increase in camaraderie to raise spirits of those in the work place. Philip Pitman of Office Angels explains. THE British workforce sometimes gets bad press - if it's not that people are sending too many emails it's too much facebook use, or the dreaded too many sick days – the swine flu pandemic offering the most recent encouragement to those keen to scream ‘fakers!’ from the rooftops. So it was refreshing to read the Office Angels survey that shows a surge in team camaraderie is keeping spirits high despite the gloom. While 61% of the 1006 strong survey group noticed they’ve increased their efforts in the workplace during the past year, a quarter admit they are more supportive of colleagues, helping them when they can. Even more (50%) of UK office workers have identified an actual increase in support from their colleagues since the onset of recession, proving that team spirit is stronger than ever. And it seems like there are many reasons for people to keep their wartime spirits high: • One third (35%) of office workers feel both workplace efficiency and creativity have increased over the past year as people are using their time more effectively and ‘going that extra mile’ to prove themselves • One in seven (14%) have also noticed less of the ‘being in it for themselves’ attitudes amongst colleagues with everyone helping each other more However it’s not all good news, as findings show office workers nationwide are feeling the strain. For the majority (58%) job security appears to be a cause for concern, no doubt influencing the surge in creativity and loyalty. It’s so encouraging to see that despite the UK economy experiencing tough times staff throughout the UK are keeping spirits up and working together to overcome difficulties. Teamwork is absolutely crucial for a successful working environment, now more than ever - after all we’re all in this situation together. Strong employees are the essence of any successful business. By ensuring people perform to the best of their ability, business productivity can soar. As the recruitment experts it’s our role at Office Angels to help identify the right employees, those with the most potential to add value to a business. However I’ve found that clients I meet with often ask for advice that goes past the initial hiring and into how they can make sure staff go on to realise that potential. While every business has different recruitment and employment needs, when it comes to getting the most from staff there are some important constants. Early on in my career someone told me that getting the most from star performers isn’t about working them so hard

46

Living Wales AUGUST 2009

you wear them out, but about thinking smartly to make sure everyone performs at their personal peak, while keeping them happy at the same time. It stuck with me, and though it was sad when I had to remove the grindstones from the office I was pleased when the nasal-injury legal cases stopped… and it helped me get more out of my own staff. One of the most important things you can do when looking to get the most out of staff is understanding that not everyone wants the same thing from their job. By acknowledging different types of employees, you can identify the ways in which they’ll best perform. The following aren’t the only kinds of employee, but as a thinking point it’s a good place to start. ‘Roamers’ – are people who have very little loyalty towards the business. They are with the company to learn a new skill then move on. Employers need to get the most of this group while they can as they will breathe fresh air into a business, bringing with them new skills and ideas they’ve learnt elsewhere. Roaming employees are not going to be incentivised by long term plans, but employers do need to keep them motivated while with the company. Short, intensive projects will keep them motivated and you’ll benefit by getting the short projects finished to a high standard. ‘Ascenders’ – are eager for career progression as they want to keep their skills fresh and be heavily involved in company development. They’re a very valuable group as they constantly want to develop themselves and in the process a company will benefit long term. It’s important that these people are given the opportunity to experience career growth, not necessarily with a fancy new job title but with development. A clear development path and opportunity to gain as much new knowledge as possible will keep them very motivated. ‘Traversers’ – are happy to stay with a company at the same level for a long period of time, they aren’t interested in career progression, promotion or added responsibility and need to be motivated by other means. Recognition is very important, and you can vary their role with similar level responsibilities to maintain interest. Knowing what drives them is a crucial part of making the most of the people around you. If you are selling your house you can help your Solicitor to make the process smoother. Property Lawyer Richard Lewis of Rubin Lewis O’Brien Solicitors gives you some tips.

Selling your property - be prepared! DELAYS In the conveyancing process it isn’t always the legal issues that hold things up. Often, the causes of delay are more practical and there are steps you can take in advance to allow your Solicitor to prepare properly. PROPERTY INFORMATION FORMS Your Solicitors will ask you to complete Property Information Forms which contain practical information about the property being sold. Your Solicitor will send these forms with Contract documents to the Buyer’s Solicitors. Let’s consider some of the main issues raised in the Property Information Forms: ALTERATIONS AND EXTENSIONS (INCLUDING CONSERVATORIES) If you make physical alterations or additions to your property, you may need to obtain both planning permission and building regulations approval. If you have added an extension or conservatory to your property, it may be that you (or a previous owner) would have needed to obtain statutory approvals. It is important to make it clear in the Property Information Forms what alterations or additions have been made to the property since its original construction. The Buyer’s Solicitor will be checking that consents were obtained by whoever carried out the work. It isn’t unusual for a property to have had several extensions, garages, conservatories etc. over the years and it is important that you account for all these alterations and additions and provide copies of the appropriate consents. This may necessitate a visit to the Planning and Building Inspectors’ Departments in order to obtain copies of the consents. If you cannot provide copies and there are no records of any such consents with the Local Authority, you may have to ask the Building Inspector to carry out an inspection of the alterations and to provide a www.livingwalesmag.co.uk

certificate that the works carried out complied with building regulations. ELECTRICAL WORKS, REPLACEMENT WINDOWS AND DOORS, CENTRAL HEATING AND WATER HEATING APPARATUS Since January 2005 electrical works carried out to properties require a certificate from an approved electrical installer that the installation complies with regulations. Since April 2002 any replacement of windows and doors requires a certificate under the FENSA regulations confirming that the installation complies with the necessary standards. Since April 2002 any heat producing appliances, central heating boiler or hot water tank has to be certified by a Corgi registered installer. If you are unable to produce these then you may have to go back to the original installer in order to obtain necessary certificates. In all the above cases, if it should prove impossible to obtain the appropriate certificates or consents, the last option is to provide an indemnity policy. This will protect the owner of the property against enforcement action taken by any authority in respect of planning consents, building regulation approvals and the other certificates of compliance mentioned above. This is a last resort as such a policy can incur a premium of anything between £50 and £300. If such a policy saves you from having to spend time trying to obtain certificates and consents then it might be money well spent! CONCLUSION A lot is written about delays in the conveyancing process and, sometime blame for these delays are laid at the feet of the conveyancing Lawyers. As you can see, it is more likely that the practical issues outlined above will have more of an impact on the typical conveyancing transaction than any legal issues. Work with your Solicitor, discuss these matters with him from the very outset and, in the weeks leading up to exchange of Contracts these issues can be dealt with and you can avoid those delays. Meme Morgan

Every child has a right to grow up with a mother.

Final word

by Meme Morgan

OLD DEAR! RECENTLY I watched a TV programme about ladies of a certain age trying for a baby. I don't mean naturally and I am not talking ladies in their 30's and 40's, I am talking about women who have gone through the menopause and are trying for children via IVF. The women featured on the programme were in their 60's and 70's and trying for the first time to conceive. One woman from the UK was even trying to get a doctor to agree to giving her treatment at the age of 72! How cruel on the children (that is if she did manage to convince the doctor to treat her). She probably wouldn't be around to see them reach their teen years let alone develop into adulthood. Aside from the child, how could this woman possibly think she had the energy to bring up a child full-time. It’s hard enough when you are relatively young and fit! And what about the damage to her body and her health? On the same programme was a women (I think from Mexico) who lied about her age to be given treatment at the age of 62. She was successful in her treatment and went on to have twin boys. However, before they had even reached the age of two, the woman was sadly diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, she died and the boys were left without a mother. How very sad - she then had to rely on family members to bring up her children. I really think that there needs to be a worldwide cut off limit to the age women are allowed IVF for the sake of the children and the health of the parent.

JUST LET KIDS BE KIDS! 48

FROM old to young, well, in my opinion that’s exactly what they are babies. Girls as young as five being forced by their vile Living Wales AUGUST 2009

mothers to take part in the latest craze to hit the UK - Beauty Pageants. Of course, this is nothing new in America. They have been encouraging this cruel ritual for years and now it has been brought over to the UK. Very young girls being made to preen, parade and perform in front of a panel of judges to win the title of Little Miss Beautiful or whatever the absurd title is! Of course, we all think our own children are beautiful, but is it then necessary for us as parents to show them off in such a bizarre manner. The programme I watched the other night showed girls being spray tanned (one very much against her will), having eyebrows plucked, hair back combed and faces plastered in make-up all to look like in my opinion teenagers or young women. On top of that, they had to perform a routine in front of the judges and audience in order to win more votes. Hello!!! these children should be playing not performing. Their mothers should be ashamed of themselves allowing their children to take part in such events. Looking at some of the mothers they were just trying to make their children 'mini me's' and forcing them to perform like circus animals. One mother even paid for her daughter to receive tuition on how to walk like a proper model. Of course, following the announcement of the winners, there were tears from those who didn't win and sobs of 'im not pretty enough!' what on earth are they doing to their children? Psychologically this could prove very damaging now and in later years. For goodness sake, let children be children - they will grow up quick enough. www.livingwalesmag.co.uk
