HOME SWEET HOME ON THE RANGE Bison Herd Enjoying New Home

The much-loved bison herd of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area have moved to new pasture land. They are now in a better grazing area and are more viewable than ever. Visitors will need to know updated information on parking and the trail to enhance their experience.

The new location is just across Hwy. 177 from the pasture they had been in since 1934, but that area was neither the best, nor the safest, location to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals. Rangers are suggesting that guests park at Pavilion Springs, just north of the bison grazing lands. From there, look for the path marked as Veteran’s Trail. This trail is a level, crushed granite trail that is a half mile length one-way. From there, visitors have a wide-open view across the grazing land. Relocation of the ten-animal herd will not just be good for the bison but also for the land. Although smaller, the new pasture has more grazeable land, supplying better nutrition. The previous pasture will be restored for rotational feeding.

While parking at Pavilion Springs and hiking the Veteran’s Trail is the closest method of viewing, overflow parking may be found at Hillside Springs or Lincoln Bridge. Look for the pedestrian underpass to safely cross under Hwy. 177. The first quarter mile of Veteran’s Trail is a wooded path until walkers reach the prairie overview. Benches are available.
