These nations were characterized by a stoic resolve gained by years of perseverance and a willingness to face enormous odds, even if that meant facing those odds alone. The Plague and the Pandemic

THE CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY OF BELIEVING THAT BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN, BUT THAT LIFE WILL GO ON, PERHAPS BETTER PREPARES THE BALKAN PEOPLE TO HANDLE

HARDSHIP AND SUDDEN CATASTROPHE THAN ANY OTHER CULTURE ON EARTH.

Although the Third World is THE THIRD WORLD cultures which had been retained even during periods of colonization and subjugation despite the best efforts of invaders and colonial administrators.

In few examples is the indomitable Third World spirit as evident as the vastly different manner in which their citizens have approached pandemics compared to the rest of the world. Stoic and purposeful, pandemics in the Balkans have often led to cultural flowering and a communal spirit to weather hardship together. The cultural psychology of believing that bad things will happen, but life will go on perhaps better prepares the Balkan people to handle hardship and sudden catastrophe than any other culture on earth. In 165 AD Roman military forces were returning victorious from Seleucia, near what is now Baghdad in Iraq. They did not, however, return alone. Along with the soldiers was a new disease - one the marching troops would spread throughout the empire on their trek home. It was a disease that would crop up in outbreaks for the next forty years, killing two emperors and decimating the mighty Roman army. There are two legends about how this new plague was unleashed upon the world. In the first the Ro-

man General Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius, opened a forbidden tomb, thus unleashing the plague upon the world as a punishment for breaking his vow not to sack the city of Seleucia. In the second legend the plague was unleashed by a Roman soldier, who opened a casket in the Temple of Apollo in a blurry reflection of the myth of Pandora’s Box. Those marching troops brought the new plague with them as they marched north, trampling a path right through the Balkans on Roman roads that have left surviving bits and pieces in various places in Bosnia and Herzegovina at places like Gračine and Mogorjelo. And so the Antonine Plague, believed by many to have been the first incidence of smallpox, entered Europe from the Roman frontier of the Balkans. Records are incredibly sparse for the plague - most especially in Dalc matia, Pannonia, Moesia, and Illyricum - much of the modern Balkans. We know that at one point 2000 people per day in Rome were dying, but historians have had to be creative in analyzing the plague’s effects on frontier areas. The task has been difficult, but not impossible; using

30

land records, military retirement records, the records of mines that closed and opened, mass graves, and evidence of rapid depopulation historians have been able to slowly piece together the story. With these techniques some modern scholars have been able to estimate the losses to the Roman military at 1015%, devastating for the entire empire, but affecting areas dependent on military forts and large numbers of retired legionnaires even more severely. The plague killed Emperor Lucius Verus early on in 169 AD, and was the most likely cause of death of the great Emperor Marcus Aurelius himself in March 180. Officially he is said to have died near the modern city of Vienna, but there is evidence he may have actually died in Sirmium - now the Serbian city of Sremska Mitrovica. “Do not act as if you had ten thousand years to throw away. Death stands at your elbow. Be good for something while you live and it is in your power,” Marcus Aurelius, in his Meditations.

The depopulation caused by the Antonine Plague was the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire in the Balkans, combined with later raids by Magyars and Avars, leaving vast swathes of fertile and rich land empty for the Slavs to settle. Just as smallpox entered into Europe through the Balkans, they were the site of the last outbreak of smallpox in Europe as well. In February 1972 a traveler returning from the Middle East contracted the disease and began to show symptoms on his return home to Đakovica. Due to a strong vaccination program, most of Yugoslavia had been vaccinated and the nation had not seen a case of the disease since 1930. In fact, the initial patient recovered quickly and without having been diagnosed with smallpox, likely because he had been vaccinated two months earlier. Doctors did not even initially consider a smallpox diagnosis. But the disease was already spreading. Within two weeks, on 2 March, another man presented with smallpox at a local hospital. He died, but not before directly infecting 38 people. The government of Yugoslavia acted quickly and decisively. By 16 March martial law was declared and intense contact tracing began, along with lockdowns and hotels requisitioned for quarantines. Borders were closed, all nonessential travel was banned. By 20 March the govern-

ment realized that they were dealing with an outbreak of smallpox and a massive revaccination effort of the entire Yugoslav population began. By mid-May 1972 the disease was eradicated, and Yugoslavia received international praise for its quick and effective action. Smallpox, however, was not the only plague that ravaged the Balkans. The eighteenth century, after the 1697 sacking of Sarajevo by Eugene of Savoy, saw multiple plagues ravage the city. Graves of some of the plague victims, like the children Muhammed and Nefisa, can still be seen today at Careva Dzamija. As with past (and future) pandemics, however, Bosnians then dealt with the uncertainty of living in a time of plague with their signature stoicism and a flowering of culture. The city was rebuilt at this time; mosques, libraries, and schools rose, and some of the cities’ greatest thinkers emerged even as plague raged. Mulla Mustafa Basheski kept a diary of those years and noted that during one of the plague outbreaks 8,000 people died. At first there were just two or three plague deaths But after one month the fatalities greatly grew At first many Vratnik girls died of the plague And many children died of the plague Although there were great numbers dead of the 18th century plagues, Sarajevans did what they do best - carry on. The few plague graves at Careva Dzamija are the only symbols left of that time, in dramatic contrast to the pervasive memento mori throughout western Europe. In fact, the great historic plagues of the Balkans have largely passed out of collective memory, unable to continue to compete with the more celebrated poetry, philosophy, and culture

that grew out of hardship.

HOTEL MONTI An Empire of Luxury

in the Heart of an Olympic Mountain

EVEN WITHOUT THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC THAT MARKED THE YEAR 2020, THE BEST TOURISM NEWS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA WAS THE OPENING OF A BRAND NEW HIGH-END HOTEL MONTI SITUATED IN VELIKO POLJE (GREAT FIELD), IN THE HEART OF IGMAN, THE OLYMPIC MOUNTAIN.

A NEW EXPERIENCE OF LUXURY

When it comes to Monti, the adjective “new” associated with its name has multiple layers of symbolism. Monti offers a completely new experience of Mount Igman and a genuinely new experience of luxury. Its architecture perfectly blends in the natural mountainous surroundings and the breath-taking scenery of pine forests the hotel is nestled in. Be prepared to be delighted by its refined and modern design features and get absorbed in the sculptures made by distinguished sculptor Mesud Kečo. You are sure to be thrilled by the hotel’s offer… Imagine spending the night under a starry sky relaxing in a Jacuzzi bath which will make you feel quite royal indeed. You can feel like a king or a queen if you stay at Monti’s Royal Suite—a two-storey area featuring a spacious terrace where you can relax, have family meals and certainly enjoy the Jacuzzi bath. You can also invite guests because the terrace allows you to entertain up to 50 people. The hotel is also proud of its Presidential Suite. In both suites, luxury is in each detail. The Presidential Suite is ideal for groups of four adults or a large family with children. Other rooms and suites, also designed in a modern style, make for a comfortable stay. You are sure to feel splendid up in the mountain. Waking up to sunlight and to the stunning views of Igman’s forests through large glass windows is a rather special experience.

SWIMMING AND THEN SKIING

This is what the perfect day up in the mountain looks like: after you wake up to the sight of Veliko polje basking in sunlight, you have breakfast and then go for a swim. Swimming in a 25-metre indoor swimming pool with heated water offering wonderful views of the snow-covered slope and forests will wake up your mind and body. Afterwards, you head out

to the ski slopes in Mount Bjelašnica or Malo polje (Small Field) in Mount Igman. You can also do it the other way around—after spending the day out on the slopes, relax your muscles and restore your energy by having a swim in the warm pool water under a clear, starry sky. You can awaken all your senses at the Six Sense Spa Centre offering a journey of relaxation and wellness inspired by the European cycle of the seasons. Based on the elemental wisdom of nature, Monti’s luxurious treatments stabilise or stimulate the restoration of the body’s natural balance. Whether alone or as a couple, we recommend the perfect treatment to make your stay memorable. The Six Sense Spa offers a 1,200-square-meter area, an indoor heated pool, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, a Jacuzzi bath, a salt room, and a Physiotherm infrared cabin.

A STATE-OF-THEART FITNESS CENTRE

The hotel has 65 rooms boasting wonderful views of the mountain and can accommodate up to 145 guests. It was designed to offer something for everyone and has all the amenities a mountain hotel should have. It is perfect for professional and amateur athletes who can use a special entrance to the hotel and a separate ski equipment storage area. Monti also features restaurants, bars and a state-of-the-art fitness centre which will soon have medical staff in place to offer care services in the rehabilitation process. It is fully suited to cater to the needs of both professional and amateur athletes in line with the world’s highest standards. Hotel Monti has an onsite restaurant with

a seating capacity of up to 360 guests indoors and 215 guests outdoors, and it will be open to other guests too. On weekends, hotel guests will be able to choose from a wide selection of culinary specialties from a special menu so as not to wait to be served for too long. As the Coronavirus pandemic is ongoing and many people avoid spending time inside, you will be happy to hear that there is a designated smoking area equipped with an independent ventilation system.

A DREAM WEDDING

If you are looking for an exclusive venue for your dream day, then you will be delighted to see Hotel Monti’s offer and its reception hall. Patiently and with a lot of love, the hotel staff will try their best to turn all your ideas into reality. The reception hall offers views of the vast expanses of Mount Igman and is perfect for gala events, team building activities, meetings, conferences, creative and other business events, and parties, of course.

NIKOLINA VELJOVIĆ, TV voditeljica Voljela bih

da 2021. skinemo maske, ali sve moguće maske

“SVI SE MI U ŽIVOTNIM ISKUŠENJIMA, ILI SUOČENI S NEPRAVDOM, PONEKAD ZAPITAMO ZAŠTO SAM ‘OBRAZ’, A NE ‘ĐON’. OBRAZ SAM, JER SE VOLIM SMIJATI, A NE GAZITI.”

Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Dnevni list Oslobođenje i privatni album

Televizijskim novinarstvom plovi već 20 godina. To je ona, njena svakodnevnica, posao, dio života, navika, ljubav, a sve dok se bude osjećala sretnom, put kojim kroči preko dvadeset godina neće mijenjati.

MALI LJUDI U VELIKOJ MISIJI

Nadograđujući znanje i vještine uz uvažavanje drugog, drugačijeg.

No, vrijeme uvijek najbolje istisne u prve redove.

BEZUVJETNA PODRŠKA, LJUBAV I ZAŠTITA

vremenu i okruženju odgojiti dijete kada opasnost vreba iza svakoga ćoška, veoma dobro znaju svi roditelji.

la i definirala Vašu životnu filozofiju?

- Posljednjih godina ponajviše uz djela i nedjela Leona Maka Veljovića (smijeh).

- Ponajviše genetika, jer nisam baš fun tjelovježbi i fitnesa, a uz to sam i veliki gurman.

NIKOLINA VELJOVIĆ, TV News Anchor I’d like us to take off our masks, all kinds of masks, in 2021

She has been a TV journalist for the past 20 years. That is who she is, her day-to-day life, her job, a part of her life, a habit, something she loves to do, and as long as she is happy, she will stay on the road she has been on for more than twenty years.

ORDINARY PEOPLE ON A GREAT MISSION

You’ve had a chance to meet people from different walks of life. What kind of people impress you the most?

“IN THE FACE OF INJUSTICE OR A CHALLENGING SITUATION, WE ALL SOMETIMES ASK OURSELVES: “WHY AM I A GOODY TWO SHOES AND NOT A BAD PERSON INSTEAD?” I’M A GOODY TWO SHOES, BECAUSE I LIKE LAUGHING AND DISLIKE TRAMPLING ON PEOPLE.”

Written by: Elma Zećo / Photographs by: Daily newspaper Oslobođenje

and private album

- People who make the best and most positive impression on me are those who are humble and unpretentious, very often unaware of how great they are and how great their deeds are. Ordinary people on a great mission to change their micro-world for the better by setting a good example to others. I’m afraid of pretentious people who strive to achieve the one and only ambition they’ve got without stopping for a minute to appreciate anything or anyone but themselves. I avoid people who idealise themselves and think they can get away with anything, people who have no compassion or empathy, people who are driven by ambition alone.

How does one build their professional image in your opinion?

- With patience, consistently, slowly, step by step. By improving one’s knowledge and brushing up one’s skills along with respecting other people, people who are different. It takes years to build a good and professional image. One could lose it in a split second just like an athlete who spent years training really hard, kept having good results and then, because of a single bad performance or match, becomes infamous and is put on a pedestal of shame and anger. It’s not fair, but that’s the world and the time we live in. One’s got to deal with it.

What kind of relationship do you have with younger co-workers, and what has helped you most to mature as a journalist?

- To be brief and specific, I haven’t been presumptuous in my own professional growth, and I don’t impose on my co-workers either, but if I see that they need help or if they seek help, advice or support, I’m always happy to help. I’ve never liked being ‘bossed around’ and ‘preached at’. I kept a low profile and watched from the side, learned from the best, and knowing they had good intentions, I always sought advice from people who’d actually help me and not laugh at me. There are some wonderful people in every generation deserving of their place in the profession, but there are also those who are less talented. Time, however, always brings the best talents to the forefront..

UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT, LOVE AND PROTECTION

You’re Leon’s mother, and he’s turned your life around. What parenting techniques do you use and what’s the most important thing for you as a parent?

- The most important thing for me as a parent, but for any parent really, is for my son Leon to be a healthy and happy child who will grow to become a decent and kind-hearted man who appreciates both himself and other people. Any parent knows all too well just how challenging it is to raise a child in this day and age when there are dangers hidden around every corner. At times when I get excited in an idealised world, I turn to the much-vaunted Scandinavian parenting model, but when I realise that all hell is breaking loose around me and that the boundaries between child and parent aren’t there any more, I go back to the model with clearly defined boundaries, rules, responsibilities, rights and obligations, and appropriate punishments. I respect Leon’s character traits; he’s a very energetic and active child, but giving too much freedom to a child who then calls too many shots can escalate into anarchy fairly quickly, and I wouldn’t want that as a parent.

You lost both of your parents at a young age. Have you got any fond memories of them that you’d like to share?

- My mum passed away in my early twenties, and a few years later I lost my dad too. Upon realising that they were gone, I felt completely alone in this world. It’s difficult to describe what it feels like to know that they’ll never give you a hug or kiss you again. When parents are gone, the only unconditional support, love and protection is also gone. You come to see that your mum won’t be there to make the best birthday cake for you, take your temperature to check for a fever a hundred times when you

are sick, or bring you the best soup there is to make you feel better ever again. Your father won’t be there to say: “You can do it, lass!” or “They better not try to bother you.” Christmas doesn’t smell the same any more, and it’ll never smell the same again. There’s a huge emotional void in your life, but you learn to live with it. Over the years, I’ve been filling this void inside of me with feelings and with pride because I had them and because they were who they were—the world’s best mum and dad. I feel better because I know I didn’t disappoint them, and I strongly believe that they’d be proud of who I’ve become.

What kind of feelings and experiences have helped you define your life philosophy?

- Philosophy is directly linked to my upbringing and the things my parents taught me. Being a good person is the most important achievement of all. If you’re a good person, good things will come to you—good deeds, joy, happiness and laughter. It’s not always easy to follow this philosophy, particularly not when you live in a world of injustice and hypocrisy. In the face of injustice or a challenging situation, we all sometimes ask ourselves: “Why am I a goody two shoes and not a bad person instead?” I’m a goody two shoes, because I like laughing and dislike trampling on people.

I DO PLAY A LOT

Whose literary work sings to your soul?

- In the past few years, mostly the good and the bad work of Leon Mak

Veljović [laughs]. Unfortunately, I really don’t have much time to read, but I do play a lot. I wouldn’t mind some light reading. I believe I made myself a promise, or, to be frank, I expressed a hope to finally bring a book after my own heart when I go to the beach next summer.

What helps you to stay slim?

- Genes mostly, because I’m not much of a fan of exercise and fitness, but I am a big fan of gourmet food. I’ve been trying lately to compensate it by walking briskly. I make it a point to walk for at least 5 to 10 kilometres daily. It feels so good and I feel much better. I think I’ll keep at it and keep a proper diet that’s not too extreme or overly stringent.

What do you wish for in 2021?

- It’s really been a difficult year, so my wishes are simple and quite humble. I’d just like next year to be better than 2020. I’d like us to stay healthy and take off our masks, all kinds of masks, and to finally breathe freely and healthily.”

CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY A Breath of Dalmatia

in Sarajevo

IN SARAJEVO’S DOLACMALTA NEIGHBOURHOOD, THE BEAUTY OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY, BUILT IN THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN PERIOD, HAS BEEN CAPTURING PEOPLE’S ATTENTION FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS.

PARISH IN A WORKERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

The idea to build a parish church in today’s New Sarajevo Municipality was brought about by Josip Štadler, the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna, at the end of the 19th century. He knew that the city was expanding, that workers, predominantly of the Catholic faith, were taking up residence in the city, and that they also needed religious guidance since they would live in this part of the city where the Parish of the Holy Trinity had already been established. The parish had been established in a worker’s neighbourhood with railway workshops and wood processing plants. Archbishop Štadler himself purchased the land in Kolodvorska Street from one Malešević, along with a house that was later converted into the vicarage, investing a large portion of his own money into it. In 1905, when the Archbishop finally decided to build a parish church, the acclaimed Hungarian architect Josip Vancaš produced a design for the church. At the time, Vancaš was the official architect and advisor to

the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, and he was commissioned to design all the buildings the Roman Catholic Church built in this period. A regulatory plan was also drawn up for the church and its immediate surroundings, planning a spacious square in front of it, very much like the one in front of the Cathedral in Sarajevo.

STYLISTIC MODELS

Stylistic models for the design could perhaps be found in Dalmatian and Italian Romanesque architecture, with its characteristic polychrome effect in stone by using two types of stone of different colours, such as the alternating bands of pink and white stone used to build the Romanesque cathedral on the island of Rab. This architecture is a variation of the Mediterranean Romanesque of Dalmatia, with its distinct cubic forms and body of the church, with sharp edges, flat and rounded surfaces, strong masses and the strongly-accentuated architectonics of the frontispieces… Horvath and Scheidig Construction Company started and completed the construction work in the Romano-Gothic architectural style featuring Secessionist stained windows and interior design features.

INTERIOR DESIGN FEATURES

Renowned artists left their mark on the interior of the Church of the Holy Trinity. Even though the original murals have not survived, we know for a fact that following the construction of the church distinguished artist Carl Richter painted its interior. The high altar, a combination of the finest white Dalmatian and pinkish Sarajevo marble, was made by Anton Lušina, the Sarajevo-based sculptor. The smaller altar niches contain sculptures of St. Augustine and St. Joseph, the work of the Zagreb-based sculptor Dragan Morak, whose work is also on display in Sarajevo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral. The side altars and pulpit were made by the Tyrolean firm of Ferdinand Stuflesser, whereas two confessionals and the pews on either side of the entrance to the church were by Venturini & Butazzoni Wood Company. The painting of the Holy Trinityin the church was named after, which hangs above the altar, was painted by the Croatian artist Oton Iveković. The stone baptistery was made by the Sarajevo-based artist Ivan Dolžan, while the Way of the Cross was made of terracotta by the Sarajevo-based Franciscan Nikola Momčinović in 1907.

NATIONAL MONUMENT OF B&H

Ivan Šarić, Canon and future Archbishop of Vrhbosna, lay the foundation stone for the church on 14 May 1905. After the construction work was completed, the church was consecrated on 18 November 1906. A decision on proclaiming the church a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina was enacted in 2009. The church that most closely resembles the Church of the Holy Trinity in Sarajevo is St. Elijah’s Church in Bosanski Brod, built a year later, in 1907.

HOW TO GET THERE?

The church is located next to the BH Postal Services and BH Telecom building in Sarajevo's Dolac-Malta neighbourhood. You can see it from the main city road, Zmaja od Bosne Street. Trams pass along this street and the main entrance to the church is on it. The church is open to visit every day. No reservation needed.

AUGUST I MARIJA BRAUN

Ljubavna priča

utkana u Sarajevo

MOŽDA JEDNA OD NAJLJEPŠIH SARAJEVSKIH LJUBAVNIH PRIČA VEZANA JE ZA PRVU GRADSKU CIGLANU KOJA JE UTKANA U URBANO TKIVO GLAVNOG GRADA BOSNE I HERCEGOVINE.

PRVA CIGLANA U GRADU

izgrađen veliki broj danas znamenitih gradskih objekata.

strijskoj pokrajini Tirol, a u Sarajelariju, podove, opeku, kanalizacione cijevi...

ŠEF DELEGACIJE EU I SPECIJALNI

PREDSTAVNIK EU U BIH, AMBASADOR

JOHANN SATTLER

SIGNIFICANT EU SUPPORT Revival of tourism in B&H

THROUGH SUPPORT FOR NEW INITIATIVES, THE EUROPEAN UNION HAS PROVIDED SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT TOWARDS MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC ON TOURISM AND STRATEGICALLY STEERING THE SECTOR IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE

BEST EXAMPLE IS ONE OF THE EU’S FLAGSHIP PROGRAMMES, EU4BUSINESS.

This programme supports tourism partnerships through its grant component worth over €1.5 million aiming to support tourism products, access to international markets and utilisation of the newest ICT tools in tourism. In addition, the EU plans to provide certain grants for COVID-19 recovery of SMEs in the tourism sector.

HEAD OF EU DELEGATION TO B&H AND EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE IN B&H, AMBASSADOR JOHANN SATTLER

“Saving jobs in tourism and creating new ones is among the main priorities of the EU’s assistance for B&H’s overall economic recovery from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have already started with short-term activities to support the tourism sector’s “reset” in 2021, including through providing grant funding for tourism partnerships. The EU is also ready to provide more substantial support, however, serious progress cannot be achieved without a strategic approach and proper planning at the country level, which means the adoption of a strategic framework. During this year, I had the chance to meet and speak to tourism associations and the business community to hear their feedback on the challenges they face. It is important to stress that the private sector needs to be better included in formulating policies through a structured dialogue, while the pandemic pointed afresh to certain systemic issues that result in discouraging investments in B&H. These are issues that the authorities need to start tackling urgently, and the EU is ready to help. Next year, we are planning a donors’ conference in order to promote investments and prospective policy developments in B&H tourism.”
