INTRODUCTION Straight line independent and continuous seating In-line is designed as a cost effective alternative to the original RailRoad products for independent and continuous run straight line seating. Seat platform and backrest slats are re-orientated (relative to the original RailRoad design) to run in line with the seat length, meaning less machining, eradicating the need for a full length steel support chassis, and with supports at a wider span. Three styles of seat supports are offered - named Edge, Loop and Delta - each with the ends of the timber slats machined in a complimentary profile. Seat assemblies are supplied as starter, mid and end modules at to allow long lines of visually seamless continuous seating, with backrests, amrests and tablet surfaces all available as optional extras on all models.

INLINE E DGE Square-form timbers define the sharp visual characteristics of the EDGE family, making this range a popular choice on new developments. The support posts are in a complementary open-ended box fabricated in plate steel that gives a heavy duty, robust aesthetic.
RailRoad
INLINE LOOP The distinctive rounded end profile of the bench slat is reminiscent of a lollipop stick, hence the abbreviated LOOP name given to this family. The central circular post supports are visually less obtrusive and softer than both the Edge and Delta options.
RailRoad
INLINE D E LTA Although made of heavy duty steel bar, the open frame support of the DELTA is visually less heavy than the other options. The vertical faces are tapered back towards the ground to give the distinctive delta form in side profile. Timber slats are square-ended as used for the Edge option.

R A I L R O A D I N L I N E S E AT I N G R A N G E Design principles and built-in features RailRoad in-line is based on a series of starter and add-on mid and end modules, which are designed to be joined to create linear runs of continuous seating. The design uses a standard module that comfortably accommodates 3 people, with the start and end units also including small extension sections at one end. Double-ended units - offering independent seating solutions - are available in two standard lengths.

RAILROAD INLINE ADD-ON OPTIONS Backrests
Š Furnitubes Ref: S-599-01-16
All standard 3-person bench modules are designed to accommodate backrests, meaning they can be fitted at the outset or retro-fitted after installation if the need for a backrest is determined later. Backrests align with the bench supports, and are therefore inset from the ends of bench platforms. On long seat assemblies, backrests can be continuous or with gaps, and even staggered to both sides to provide dual aspect seating.
Standard armrests
Timber-topped armrests
Tablet surfaces
Constructed from robust 80mm wide steel plate, standard armrests can be fitted between any two timber slats on a bench or seat, although aligning them with bench platform supports and at midpoints between will ensure comfortable spacings. There is one style specifically designed for use with benches (although these can also be used with seats if preferred), and another for seats with backrests. Armrests can be easily retro-fitted if required.
The addition of a timber slat to a steel armrest aids its use, improves comfort and looks good. The timber rail extends beyond the front of the steel armrest support, thereby providing a good grip area for less able-bodied people in particular to assist when lowering themselves onto or lifting off from the seats. A timber armrest is also warmer to the touch. At 110mm wide, the flat timber is suitable for placing small items such as a coffee cup onto.
It is increasingly common for people to carry a small laptop or tablet device, and to use them in the outdoor environment. At 350mm wide, the tablet (a small side table) is a useful addition to a bench, suitable for placing not only computer devices onto, but also food and drink, a book or newspaper. When using a tablet it is not advisable to use armrests in standard positions as the gaps between would be too narrow for comfortable seating.

RAILROAD INLINE NARROW BENCH RANGE Compact, cost effective benches
450
450
450
At around 700mm wide, the standard width RailRoad seating platforms offer a generous seating area, allowing people to perch on both sides at once. This width also allows for backrests to be added within the overall width of the seat. Where only benches (seating without backrests) are required, and / or there are budgetary constaints, the RailRoad Narrow Bench range is an alternative solution. All 3 standard RailRoad styles are offered - Edge, Loop and Delta - and as starter, mid and end modules for continuous seating and in length options of independent units. The geometry and design principles remain as for the standard bench, therefore offering all of the same inter-changeability features and configuration layout options. Scaled down versions of armrests and tablet surfaces are optional extras across the range.

© Furnitubes Ref: S-603-01-16
A common range of tables is designed to complement both the RailRoad original and in-line seating ranges, with heavy duty iroko timber slats fixed to tough galvanised steel support structures. The table top platform is mounted on a choice of 3 support options - to match the Edge, Loop and Delta seating units. Tables are offered in a length of 1950mm to comfortably accommodate 3 people on each side, or even 4 people at a slight squeeze. This length corresponds with all standard ‘independent’ seating options from the RailRoad range, meaning tables can be used with the standard benches, with or without backs, and also the narrow bench versions, which is a popular combination for picnic sites. Two table widths are offered, with the wider versions recommended for outdoor dining provision.

R A I L R O A D I N L I N E S E AT I N G Case study: Sir William Siemens House, Manchester
© Furnitubes Ref: S-895-01-19
Since its construction in the late 1980s Sir William Siemens House has stood as a landmark building at the southern gateway to Manchester, on Princess Road, the main route into the centre from the city’s airport. Its clean lines, with squares of white cladding and glazing, contrast sharply with the red-brick terraces that predominate the streetscape of south Manchester. Set in expansive grounds, the building is laid out as geometrical perimeter blocks around an internal courtyard that staff use to take time out, eat lunch and even for informal meetings, Manchester weather permitting. The original courtyard paving visually reinforced the gridlines of the building and extended to the apron around the exterior, as a rare example of integrated architectural and landscape design from its era. A recent requirement for reconfiguration of the car parking offered the opportunity to re-model some of the external spaces and to upgrade the original paving, which after nearly 30 years had understandably deteriorated. The large in-situ concrete slab formations have been replaced with smaller unit blocks in a variety of pale grey hues that complement the white façade of the building. Exterior seating outside of the courtyard space has been introduced, and we are delighted that our RailRoad Inline product was selected for this high profile scheme. With its clean square lines, the ‘Edge’ version perfectly complements the architectural language of the site. Five benches have been used at Sir William Siemens House, aligned on the building gridlines, providing office workers and visitors to the site the opportunity to rest for a moment before or after going into the building. Steelwork on the seats is in a galvanised finish that will dull to a soft grey colour over time, with untreated iroko hardwood slats that will weather to a silver-grey patina.

R A I L R O A D I N L I N E S E AT I N G , TA B L E S & P L A N T E R S Case study: Colindale Offices, London Borough of Barnet
© Furnitubes Ref: S-896-01-19
Located in the regenerated area of Grahame Park in north west London, the 10 storey Colindale Offices comprises 90,000 sq ft of space to accommodate London Borough of Barnet staff and community facilities including a business innovation hub, café and public conference suite. The building responds to the constrained nature of the site by combining two simple geometric elements: a triangular-shaped 4 storey block which maximises the footprint of the site and addresses the scale of the surrounding lower-rise residential developments, and a taller 10 storey more slender rectangular tower which provides the majority of the office space. The roof of the 4 storey element has been cleverly utilised as an outdoor terrace, available for use by both staff and visitors. The roof terrace edge is bounded by a sedum-planted margin and the space includes large raised timber planting beds and is surfaced in a mosaic of hard paving for the pathways, hardwood decking for the relaxation areas and pebble borders. For the decked areas Furnitubes supplied 6 table and bench sets and a further 7 independent benches from the RailRoad Inline range, with ‘Delta’ supports that can be readily bolted down to the decking for solid placement at this potentially windy site. Eleven RailRoad planters have been placed in the gravel margins to the tower, perfectly complementing the nearby seating, and planted with contemporary box topiary balls.

R A I L R O A D I N S TA L L AT I O N Standard bolt-down fixing All benches, seats and tables are fitted with a base plate to all supports, pre-drilled for M10 or M12 ground anchors. Surface-mounted boltdown installation suits sites where the ground is relatively level and where the existing substrate is of sufficient mass and stability to fix into or where new foundation blocks can be laid.
RailRoad
RailRoad
RailRoad
E DGE
LOOP
D E LTA
Alternative fixing methods Where the ground slopes, a standard bolt-down installation may not be suitable, as seating and table top surfaces would echo the falls of the ground level. There are two alternative base / installation options that can be supplied on RailRoad Edge and Railroad Loop products, both of which enable horizontal surfaces to be installed true plumb even on sloping ground. For the RailRoad Delta range of products the tapered faces of the supports are less suited to below ground fixing as variable installation depths on adjacent supports would result in an inconsistent appearance; Delta products are therefore best suited to bolt-down installation onto level ground.
Š Furnitubes Ref: S-605-01-16
Below ground bolt-down (Edge & Loop) Steel supports can be extended in depth, with a base plate for bolting down to a concrete foundation block set below the finished paving level, and at sufficient depth to allow paving to be overlaid. All steel supports are generally supplied at the same height, meaning foundation blocks must be set true plumb rather than at a constant depth below finished ground level. The main advantage of this method is that the product can be fairly easily removed without the need to break out a full concrete foundation. Cast-in post support (Edge & Loop) Steel supports can be supplied at extended lengths for setting into a concrete foundation block. This method is a relatively quick and easy installation, but removal of the product can be disruptive as the finished surface as well as the concrete have to be broken out and excavated. Products for either of these installation methods are designed and manufactured to the dimensions to suit your site. Other site-specific details can be designed and supplied as required.
