ORGANISING A HOME OFFICE FILING SYSTEM Once a filing system is ready to go, it’s time to go through and organise the paperwork. It can be a big task, but once the system is set up, the benefits will be profound.
Step 1: Gather Paperwork Before getting started, gather all paperwork together in one place. Be sure to round up any loose paperwork around your home, office or desk.
Step 2: Categorise Once it is all together, separate the paperwork into categories. The exact categories used will depend on your needs, but a popular choice is to split the pile into ‘action’, ‘archive’, ‘shred’ and ‘recycle’.

Step 3: Shred and Recycle Before getting started with paperwork that needs to be kept, be sure to shred and recycle all paperwork that doesn’t need to be kept. Throwing the waste away at this stage will stop it getting in the way later.

Step 4: Archiving Every document in the archive pile can be filed away in an appropriate and clearly marked folder. Always make sure to leave appropriate space for future documents.
Step 5: Keep Action Documents at Hand Documents marked as ‘action’ should be kept somewhere easily accessible. Storing them in a tray on the desk will keep them visible and act as a visual reminder.
