EDITORIAL

Infrastructural boost and fInancIal reforms are goIng to yIeld beautIful outcomes ‘Furniture Design & Technology’ magazine (FDT) is now a two years old magazine with six published issues. During 2017, Demonetisation affected the pace in the business that also impacted FDT initial take off followed by GST implementation that impacted the business scenario for some time. In 2018, our team focused more on surveys and reaching out to furniture sellers and furniture industries on ground that is helping us to present reports that have never been made earlier. Post demonetisation, GST was indeed a speed breaker but it is now slowly shaping the unorganised segment towards a channelized work culture which is helping the furniture industries in getting better organised and focused. The calendar year 2018 proved to be a tough year for furniture makers, small sized industries, OEMs and material plants and brought a consolidation phase. Because of slow pace in residential housing and property markets, furniture makers, sellers and importers are not as ease as yet but optimism is building up. Despite some movement in office leasing space and few corporate expansions, entire financial year 201819 was ridden by tightness in real estate markets, liquidity crunch and suspended projects. The new funding rules and strictness in bank financing impacted the speed of business and affected the not so strong industries of every sector. The furniture making segment have witnessed their toughest phase during this period because of many policy changes that affected the market demands. But, it is also true that almost every industry owner, traders and a large section of business community is in favour of the reforms that is taking place. The business community specially in furniture segment is highly optimistic that whatever changes and difficulties it has witnessed, are going to yield beautiful outcome for organised and clean business entrepreneurs. Market believes that post July 2019, things will begin to be visible that will uplift the demand scenario in markets. Surprisingly during last two years, organised furniture players have added to their plant capacities or have modernised their set up without fearing from any slowdown sentiment. 8

March 2019

At FDT, as a team we are confident being more regular, more on toes to witness the changes occurring in this segment. In this issue of FDT, there is a detailed on-ground report of ‘Jaipur Wooden furniture’ business scenario. There is also a brief market update on one of the vital markets of India e.g. Panchkuiyan furniture market, delhi. The Material section has article on ‘growing uses of mdf in carving application in uttar Pradesh’ and a detailed article on ‘expanding and flourishing PVc edge band tape applications and demands’ in India. The interview of ‘Felder Group, India’ director, Mr Tushar Tandel’ is a important read for the industry, where his tips could be very useful for entrepreneurs and ambitious OEMs of Furniture segment. With lots of news clips, industry people interaction and focus on market updates, FDT magazine look forward to meet you all at Ligna 2019, Hannovar, Germany. Enjoy reading, Happy FY 2019-20.

PVC Edge Band Tape:

Present Scenario

The edge band is very much growing industry in India with increasing demand of modular furniture, kitchen, wardrobes and other ready to use furniture. In comparison to the developed countries Indian modular furniture market is still at the beginning phase, and it is evident that tier three, four cities and rural markets are still using wooden beadings in larger scale which accounts to nearly 70 percent. But, slowly the use of wooden beading is being replaced by PVC edge band in metro cities and the trend is also moving towards tier two and three cities. So, its future is very much bright as with increasing supply its demand will automatically be there.

Felder

constantly attains growth in different categories of woodworking machines ~Mr. Tushar Tandel, director, Felder Group India Felder with their impressive track record of offering range of wood working machines across the globe has been operational in Indian for over 20 years. Constantly attaining growth the company has expanded their offerings to panel thicknesers and modulars that had started their journey from range of panel saw. They suggest that customers should understand while selecting their machine is whether they are dealing with people driven organisation or process driven organisation. They believe that a process driven organisation facilitate uninterrupted service due to being focused on organised working model. FDT interacted with Mr. Tushar Tandel, director, Felder Group India and talked about their product offerings, market orientation and future prospects in terms of changing market scenario. Here is a brief synopsis. 20

March 2019

ONE 2 ONE

One of the important things our customers should understand while selecting their machine is whether they are dealing with people driven organisation or process driven organisation. Any one will be agree that in process driven organisation there will be consistency, longevity& creditability. One of the key factors of Felder India’s success is that we have consistently focused on improving our processes which would ensure a hassle free customer experience.

Felder is known as Panel Saw machine producing company, what do you say? Of course, when we started our operation in India 20 years ago – Panel Saw was our flagship product. It’s still great to hear that when Indian carpenters or furniture manufacture think of panel saw they think of Felder. Having said that, Felder has been constantly growing in all the categories of woodworking machines, so, from the initial product range of saws, planerthicknessers & moulders we have now expanded to CNC and industrial edge banding machines. FELDER now has more than 170 products in each price and performance class.

What are the current updates in advancements? At present people need volume and accuracy both at a time, so considering both these aspects, future lies with CNC, that is why we have introduced and have been working very aggressively on our CNC machines be it beam saw , drilling machine or edge-banders. With introduction of tempora series edge-banders (advantEdge) we are offering Indian customers a futuristic machine. The machine offers you a zero optical joint between panel &

edge. “smart touch” control units & network connection nullify the manual setting. I am proud to say that it has gained popularity with premium kitchen manufacturers.

In wood working machine suppliers there are Indian, Chinese/Taiwanese and European. So, for a prospective aspirant in the industry what do you suggest that would be better and how? I think every product is good whether it is Indian, Chinese/Taiwanese or European. It all depends on, what fits in the needs of the customer. Often we have customers that start with local/Chinese machines and when they go for expansion or upgrade they look for European machines.

It is evident that lot of related industry people want to diversify into furniture making. How they can sustain in this industry and what they should opt? In any industry when organisation looks for expansion or growth they tend to look for diversification. It’s the fastest option available. We as machine manufacture /supplier are more than happy to cater such opportunities.

Centrally located near Connaught Place (CP) in Delhi the Panchkuian Furniture Market has been the prime destination for buying furniture at least since the 1960s which is considered as one of the oldest furniture markets in Asia. The newly developed furniture markets in Delhi based at Kriti Nagar, Jail Road, Amar Colony, Ghitorni, MG Road etc are far destined but CP is the place where people come from every nook and corners of NCR and nearby states, due to which the offerings at Panchkuian Furniture Market are having larger verities with lot of options for home furnishing items also. of city and agreed to relocate to the new place near Goal Market. At the relocated place also they has to fight for their original charm as it was first operational in a multy-story building occupying four floors, where customers were not willing to visit/purchase. Later after four years of struggle and presentations before the honourable court for proper rehabilitation they got justice and properly facilitated at the ground floor covering larger area which is divided into two wings 1 and 2. The tough time for this market is over now and the traders are going to see its bright side very soon. Located at the heart of the city, at a short distance from Connaught Place this market is having a total 200 shops showcasing various furniture and home furnishing items which are mostly economical and value for money products feeding local as well

as customers from nearby states. The wing 1 of the market is having nearly 130 shops of various kinds and wing 2 is having nearly 70 shops offering wide array of options including classical wooden furniture as well as cheap but convenient plastic items. The market is having retail and wholesale shops comprising ratio of nearly 70:30. The higher quality customised solution in furniture and furnishing items are offered on demand. Furniture made of steel and other metals are also available at this market. The associated furniture manufacturers (small and big) are nearly 1000 hundred in numbers who are feeding them for sales and wholesale offerings to locals and nearby states including NCR. The imports scenario at this market is negligible for wooden furniture but for imported items for home furnishing witness

considerably good which is brought from China, Malaysia, etc. With an observation it can be said that the market is a one-stop destination for all furniture needs, right from elegant wooden finish to the up-todate metal classic chairs and from medically recommended beds to the super cool reclining chairs. The best part about all of this is that everything is very affordable and most vendors offer home delivery solutions as well. It is also important to note that despite such roadblocks on the way, the Panchkuian furniture market still shines brightly and is without a doubt the most popular and affordable furniture market in the city because of its cheap and reliable product offerings.
