Let me just start this brief introduction by saying this: Music Victoria’s membership drive is back at it for 2017, and you should all consider signing up if it’s within your means. As well as scooping up a range of discounts, deals and prizes that are genuinely useful to both music makers and lovers alike, the Music Vic team are some of the most hard working and passionate people in their field, thoroughly dedicated to Victoria’s music scene. Now, on to the laughs. Melbourne International Comedy Festival is finally upon us, and as you can tell by the ridiculously large guide found in this week’s Beat – the festival itself is an absolute behemoth. Sure, there’s big-name acts and internationals. By all means, go and laugh yourself silly to some of the world’s finest. But this year, go out and take a punt on one of the hundreds of talented indies and up-and-comers who form the bread and butter of the Comedy Festival program. The next generation of comics are undoubtedly plugging away at this year’s festival. All that’s left to do is get out and catch them first.

Shady Cottage
Walk Off The Earth
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Shady Cottage has changed locations. This year’s festival is now being held at the picturesque Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. Situated in Melbourne’s northeast, Lake Mountain is still less than a two hour drive away, and all programming will remain the same. There are still final release tickets up for grabs, so head on over to the festival website. Shady Cottage runs from Friday March 31 until Sunday April 2 and features performances from Sex On Toast, Wax’o Paradiso, Slum Sociable and heaps more.
It must be superstition. For the third time, Canadian indie futurists Walk Off The Earth will whisk around the world whilst bandleader Sarah Blackwood is pregnant. And for the third time a rollicking, vivacious tour awaits. Bearing a timelessly refreshing sound, Walk Off The Earth meld rock, reggae, pop and folk influences and will tour in support of their most recent original release Fire in My Soul. Walk Off The Earth walk onto stage at the Forum on Saturday July 29.
Allday
Hanson
Fresh from dropping his brand new single, Allday has also revealed the details of his forthcoming album and tour. New track In Motion features electro wunderkind Japanese Wallpaper getting in on the action, who will also be joining the rapper on his upcoming tour. It’s the latest track to be released from his highly anticipated new album, Speeding, due out April 21. Catch him at Festival Hall on Friday July 7. Tickets via Allday’s website.
‘90s pop phenomenon Hanson are coming to Australia as part of their Middle Of Everywhere world tour. The tour marks their 25th anniversary as a group, two decades on from when MMMbop took over the airwaves. Hanson will be pumping out fan favourites from their massive collection of hits at The Forum on Sunday June 18 and Monday June 19, tickets via Ticketmaster.
Paul Dempsey
Toe to Toe
Australian songwriting stalwart Paul Dempsey is set to tour in support of the fourth single taken from Strange Loop, the slinky and seductive Blindspot. Strange Loop debuted in the Top 5 of the ARIA Albums Chart upon its release in May 2016, and has been receiving stellar reviews ever since. Catch Paul Dempsey at Max Watts on Saturday July 8.
Aussie hardcore heroes Toe to Toe are heading out on tour in support of their forthcoming album Rise Up, due out on April 28 via Golden Robot Records. The title track doubles as the album’s first single, giving fans a taste for what Toe to Toe have in store. Catch them at the Bendigo Hotel on Friday June 2 at Singing Bird Studios, Frankston on Saturday June 3. Tickets via the band’s website.

The All Seeing Hand
Announce their return to Aussie Shores Bringing their own form of ritualistic, chaotic, enigmatic madness, Kiwi psychedelic monstrosity The All Seeing Hand will be touring Australia to fry your neural networks. Listeners can look forward to throat singing, a frenzy of percussion, and turntable-enhanced melodies. It is sure to be an experience. Melbournians can expect their visit on Thursday April 27 at The Curtin in Carlton. Check the venue’s website for more details.
Australia’s finest jazz festival is back for 2017, bursting at the seams with a lineup that simultaneously respects the history and future of jazz. Nearly 500 artists from all across the globe will be involved in the program, including Dianne Reeves, Tigran Hamasyan, Pascal Schumacher, and more. The musical offerings of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival are far too many to list here, so head to the festival website for tickets and more information. The festival runs from Friday June 2 to Sunday June 11 in venues throughout Melbourne.
La Pegatina
Steve Hackett
Catalan seven-piece La Pegatina will bring their special rumba stylings to Australia this May, and are looking to move some hips and get the crowd amped. La Pegatina formed in 2003, and they’re not looking to slow down a bit. You can look forward to lyrics in Spanish, Catalan and French, and a guarantee that La Pegatina will somehow get you chanting their lyrics along with them. Melbourne folk can check out La Pegatina at Bar Open on Friday May 19. For tickets, check the venue website.
Steve Hackett inspired a generation of axe-wielders as the guitarist of Genesis (the band, not the book), but had left the band prior to their visit to Australia. To amend for this, Steve Hackett is bringing his first solo tour, Genesis Revisited, to Australia and New Zealand. Fans can expect virtuosic solos and from Genesis classics as well as some new solo offerings. You can catch him at Palais Theatre on Saturday August 5. For tickets and more information, check the David Roy Williams website.

Big Prizes For Music Victoria’s Membership Drive
Music Victoria has done an awesome job getting complaint protection and sound proofing of venues and councils committing to live music, workshops, the annual awards with The Age, Women’s Advisory Panel projects, mentorship and a practical guide for venues. Obviously it needs membership subscriptions to keep doing what it does. It’s running a membership drive until Friday March 31. It costs $33 a year for individuals ($22 for students/concession) and $66 for bands. Prizes for joining or renewing total $12,500. See their website for these including event tickets, record vouchers, media mentorship, audio gear and legal advice. Members include Camp Cope, Kylie Auldist, Jo Syme (Big Scary, Pieater), Rich Stanley (The Tote, Aarght Records), Mathew Rogers (UNIFIED) and James Young (Cherry Bar, Yah Yahs). CEO Patrick Donovan says, “I wanna know why we have 12.5 million attendances at gigs in this state every damn year, and not every musician, small business and punter is a paid up member.”
New Courses At Collarts
Collarts (Australian College of the Arts) has introduced two new courses to start in May. The Content Creation Diploma of Arts degree is lead by creative director, designer and publisher Patrick Price. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Tommy Rando will deliver the first of its kind Bachelor of Arts in Music Production. Rando won a jazz scholarship to New York at 19. Working out of his Rooftop Recording Studios in St Kilda, he has written for Vanessa Amorosi, Anthony Callea, Taxiride and Lee Harding including the 6-week #1 ARIA chart hit Wasabi. Collarts has also acquired private education college, Mercer School of Interior Design. It will deliver degrees in Interior Design within two years, and plans to further expand into Graphic Design and Animation thereafter.
RnB Fridays Heads To TV
The success of radio’s Hit Network’s RnB Fridays has lead to compilation albums and concerts. Now it’s heading to television with a deal struck with MTV. Beginning Friday March 31, MTV Dance will air non-stop RnB music videos from 8am to midnight every Friday, featuring RnB anthems from the early ‘90s to the hits of today and covering acts as TLC, Nelly, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Usher.
Would You Like A Dildo With Your Fries?
With touring now the revenue maker rather than record sales for many acts, Australian promoters report that touring acts are less about getting smashed every night and more about trainers and chefs accompanying them. A report by NT News on riders requested by acts going through the Northern Territory says that among items requested of late included floating dildos, tea bags, a single packet of Amcal glucose jelly beans, Darwin stubbies and crocodile meat. One promoter told the newspaper some bands put in strange requests as a joke. “I had one who had to have someone in doing cold press juices – they couldn’t be premade,” she said. “They had to have a cold press juicer, which can be bloody hard to find, and someone making the juices in front of them.”
Ed Sheeran Settles Over Shape Of You…
Ed Sheeran has given a co-songwriting credit to the writers of TLC’s ‘90s hit No Scrubs after comparisons were made with his Shape Of You. Previously credited were Sheeran, Steve Mac and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid. Now they have squeezed in Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle, plus TLC producer Kevin Briggs. Sheeran has made millions of dollars from Shape Of You.
In Australia, where it’s scored 27,000 streams and downloads, it’s notched up eleven weeks at #1 on the ARIA chart. He now ties Wings’ Mull of Kintyre (1977/78) and Bryan Adams’ (Everything I Do) I Do It for You (1991). He has to jump six more tracks (including Pharrell Williams’ Happy, Eminem’s Lose Yourself and The Beatles’ Hey Jude) to reach the record of 14 weeks by Abba’s Fernando in 1976. The new ÷ (Divide) album has sold 140,000 copies in Australia in its first two weeks and stayed at #1 this week for a third time. Meantime, on the ARIA chart, X is at #5 and + at #10.
…While Kanye West Settles Over Sample
Kanye West has settled with Hungarian rock singer Gabor Presser over an unauthorised 85-second sample on 2013’s New Slaves. It came from Presser’s 1969 song Gyongyhaju Lany (or Pearls In Her Hair). The first time Presser became aware of it was when he got a cheque for $10,000 from Kanye’s lawyers. He never cashed it. Instead, he fired a stern letter back to say to come back with a proper offer (his figure was $2.5 million) before the album was launched.

Returning to the Australian stage after conquering the world Nazeem Hussain’s love-hate relationship with Australian customs has been an integral vertebrae of his comedic backbone to this point. Public Frenemy sees him take a step further and comes off the back of sold out global tours in 2015 and 2016 which culminated in his uproarious run of shows at Edinburgh Fringe. Catch Nazeem Hussain red hot at ACMI for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival between Thursday March 30 and Sunday April 23 (bar Mondays).

Hip Hop Freddie Gibbs
2017 is going to be a busy year for American MC Freddie Gibbs. Earlier this month it was announced that he has now started working on a second project with Madlib. Their previous collaboration was Piñata which was considered the best body of work from either artist (Quasimoto disagrees). The new project will be called Bandana. Freddie Gibbs is also releasing his third solo album, You Only Live 2wice on Friday March 31. The album is likely to have been written to sell records. This will be a more commercial enterprise but his collaboration with Madlib will be more experimental. Speaking of future projects, both Kendrick Lamar and Nas have announced new solo albums coming out this year. No information on Nas’s album other than he bought a new studio to record it in.

Mindsnare
So the new Mindsnare album dropped by surprise this week and it’s fucking rad. Sonically a cross between their two acclaimed albums Hanged, Choked, Wrists Slit and The Death, the new record Unholy Rush is a perfect return for the legendary band. I’ve been blasting it all week, check it out now. All 500 limited run vinyl copies sold out within a day, here’s hoping Resist do another pressing for everyone who missed out. Following up the unexpected release of two 7”s last month, the band wanted to release the album without any pre-orders or any promotion. Having already sent out several copies of the album to fans who ordered the singles, Graham from Resist explains the methodology of the wide release, “Mindsnare don’t put out all that much music, so how cool is that you receive the band’s new 7”, but as a bonus also receive a new album you had no idea about. The plan was to press a limited amount of the 7”s and sell them out really quickly – put a small amount into retail so they also sell quickly, then release the album – no pre-awareness, no pre-order campaign, it’s simply out now.”
Mortiis
After Mortiis left Emperor, the Norwegian black metal band he was part of starting, in late 1992, he released a number of solo records between 1993 and 1999. Disenfranchised with the brutality and hypocrisy of the record industry, Mortiis didn’t release a new album until 2010, when the band self-released Perfectly Defect as a limited edition CD and a free download through their own website. The next record, The Great Deceiver, was completed around 2013, but didn’t see the light of day until 2016. Now comes The Great Corruptor, featuring remixes of The Great Deceiver material by artists as diverse as Godflesh, Die Krupps. In Slaughter Natives, Rhys Fulber, and many more. Release date is Friday April 21.
Daye Jack
Tiger Jaw
Maybe Ghostface Killah and MF Doom can use it because their collaboration Supreme Clientele 2 & Doomstarks is totally 100% actually going to come out this year. Admittedly this has been announced every year since 2011 but all the same it has been announced again. Raekwon just released his new solo album. This one is called The Wild and the lyrical content draws heavily from his experiences in the industry. The verses and bars are constructed in that older hip hop style of storytelling, same as the beats. In fact the whole album seems to be more a reflective echo of Raekwon’s career. 21-year-old Daye Jack released his third album No Data. The track Raw is worth a listen. The album has dance beats with softer lyrics. It gives some of the songs a Pharrell Williams vibe, but not all of them.
Alt-college kinda emo whatever band Tigers Jaw have announced the upcoming release of their new album. Entitled Spin, the record follows up their 2014 release Charmer. Due for release on Tuesday May 9 on Black Cement Records, the band has released the preview single Guardian. Pop-punk heroes Descendents have announced the upcoming release of a 20th anniversary vinyl reissue of their 1996 comeback album Everything Sux. Out Friday May 5, the remastered reissue will come on 180gram premium vinyl with deluxe embossed cover art and accompanied by an additional 7” with outtakes Lucky and Shattered Milo. Preorders are available now from Epitaph Records. Gainesville beard punk lords Hot Water Music have released a digital only career-spanning compilation of outtakes, b-sides and covers. Entitled Keep It Together, the album is available now via Rise Records on Spotify. The band is currently recording a new LP due for release later this year, their first since 2012’s Exister.
Horizons Edge
Melbourne power metallers Horizons Edge are putting the finishing touches on their new studio album due for release later this year. Album number three from the band is the follow up to their well received 2015 opus, Heavenly Realms. Frontwoman Kat Sproule is flying to Germany in early April to lay down her vocal tracks with producer Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear, ex-Gamma Ray), while the overall album is being produced by Bob Katsionis of Firewind and Serious Black. Melbourne’s heavy experimental creatives Orsome Welles release their long-awaited new EP, Rise, on Friday May 26, and will hit the road to support it in June and July. Rise has been a long time coming, with its first two singles Build A World and Maestro released towards the end of 2016. Both songs caused quite a stir among industry and fans alike with their striking videos being produced by acclaimed film-maker, Adrian Goleby. See them on Saturday July 8 at the Evelyn.
Danzig Grey Ghost & Mantra
Goldlink and Mike Will Made-it also dropped new albums. Goldlink’s At What Cost serves fans of harder hip hop. It’s more aggressive in the lyrics, a little more typically ‘gangsta’. There are numerous references to selling narcotics, as is expected in the genre. Mike Will Made-it is the next big thing with Ransom 2. The album features a who’s who of the commercial rap scene. Kendrick Lamar, 21 Savage, Lil Yachty, Young Thug all appear on different songs. So does Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and Chief Keef. One LP that flew under the radar in March was Rogue Astronaut by Canberra MC Context. It’s a tidy seven track indie rap ode from a city that criminally underrates its MCs. The Canberra region has helped spawn Koolism, Maggot Mouf and Omar Musa. Don’t forget to free up your Wednesday nights for Can I Kick It. It’s a weekly freestyle event hosted at Horse Bazaar. The monthly event All You Can Spit is on Friday March 31 at Rubix Warehouse. Mantra and Grey Ghost are headlining. 16

Danzig has announced the release of a new full length album. Entitled Black Laden Crown, the album will be the first since 2010’s Deth Red Saboath. Danzig last released the terrible covers EP Skeletons in 2015, which was no good and not worth anyone’s time. An all-Elvis covers album was also announced but has not yet eventuated. Black Laden Crown, is due for release on Friday May 12 on Nuclear Blast. Baltimore metallic hardcore band Pulling Teeth have announced a reissue of their 2007 debut album Martyr Immortal. Although receiving a modest following in their original run, the band’s sound has been expanded upon and received more exposure through newer bands like Power Trip. To be released on A389 Records in the middle of this year, the band will also be playing a one-off reunion show at this year’s This Is Hardcore fest in Philadelphia. Bay Area stoner hardcore band Connoisseur have announced the upcoming release of a new 7”. Entitled Over The Edge, the record will be out on Friday April 7 on Tankcrimes. The band last released their debut Stoner Justice in 2015.
Avatarium
Sweden’s doom darlings Avatarium are back to take the world by storm with their new album Hurricanes And Halos, out on Friday May 26, but you can get a preview of what’s to come with the new single Into The Fire/Into The Storm. “We wanted to get a raw and energetic recording to back up the powerful and dramatic lyrics of this song,” guitarist Marcus Jidell says. Cut Up have released their highly anticipated second album, Wherever They May Rot, via Metal Blade Records/ Rocket. Just as brutal as its predecessor, 2015’s Forensic Nightmares, Wherever They May Rot offers a rougher edge and is catchier overall. “Wherever They May Rot is an utter bloodbath from start to finish,” guitarist/vocalist Andreas Bjornson says. “We have managed to push the savagery even further than before, also broadening our sound without compromising one inch of aggression.”

Concious Deliciousness at Grub Kangaroo Skull
This Friday March 31, Melbourne based label Temporal Cast are hosting a showcase in the Grace Darling basement. Coming to fruition in 2013, Temporal Cast have releases from Kangaroo Skull and Cale Sexton under the labels belt with more in the pipeline for 2017. Coming out for the basement bash are Chiara Kickdrum, Kangaroo Skull and X-Axis throwing down live sets plus DJ support from Kasun, Cale Sexton and Jamal Amir. A few blocks over, Glamorama hosts Irish born, Berlin based deep house producer and DJ The Drifter. On top of holding down an intense touring schedule, he’s also one of the brains behind Maeve records. He’s a master of his craft, whether playing disco, techno or house. With a background in traditional folk music, it’s safe to say he isn’t bound by genre.
A team of seven respected chefs are cooking an honourable meal this Sunday inspired by a particular ingredient which makes their food even more enjoyable to consume. Concious Deliciousness at Grub boasts sustainability as the holy ingredient in which their entire menu is inspired by. The evening came about through similar ideas on produce suppliers, honouring plants and animals as well as the focus of minimal wastage. The menu will embody the regions of our very own Victoria, using only respected harvests such as organic chocolate from the Daintree forest. The rest is untold and left to our surprise – yet I can promise chef Pierre Poelofs will be serving the famous deserts that he hasn’t plated up since December last year, when he concluded seven years of his ‘desert evenings’. To make the evening even more delightful, all dishes will be served from an air stream caravan that lives on the corner of Moore and Brunswick streets. Tickets can be purchased via Melbourne Food and Wine festival website.
The year marches forward and tumbles into April with a cloud of crushed leaves and a big list of things to do. This Friday March 31 to Sunday April 9 is National Youth Week. There’s some seriously cool stuff on just for you. On Thursday April 6 the Governor of Victoria is throwing an official house party at Government House Melbourne with Alex Lahey, Mallrat and a DJ set from Japanese Wallpaper. It’s gonna be wild. On Saturday April 1 at Newport Community Club celebrate the launch of UP with dream pop prince Jarrow and The Bill Burns Band, UFO GO, Moses Carr and more. There’s so much more on offer, head to youthcentral.vic.gov. au to fill your event calendar. Speaking of National Youth Week, City of Stonnington have announced VIVA Youth Festival all in the name of celebrating youth culture and the important contribution young people make to our community. The Festival is packed with activities and entertainment such as skateboarding and basketball competitions, a dedicated dance stage, music, street art, workshops and activities, food stalls, prizes and even a mechanical bull. Head to Princes Gardens in Prahran on Saturday April 8 to celebrate how great the youth are.
Nite Fleit
Also on Friday, party hip hop night Reup is back, now at New Guernica since our beloved Mercat Basement is well and truly closed. Stephelles, Infinity Blade, Amy Axegal, Gamegirl, Tranter and Sofie Roze will be throwing the dank stuff around from 9pm. On Saturday April 1, Houses in Motion are taking over Section 8 all day and night for their Get The Funk Out Of My Face party. The team has opted for a more no frills vibe – just booty-shakin’ and body-jerkin’ tunes nonstop, free entry and hopefully some good weather. What else do ya need really? On board are DJs Nite Fleit, Millú, Roy Blues, After Midnight Limonata, Oliver Francis and Bander Xyng.
Zero Percent
If you’re looking for tuna with a little more pep on Saturday, check out the Arteq Turns Two day party going down at the new North Melbourne open-air warehouse space: The Third Day. Apparently we can still have open-air parties in April, cheers global warming. Heading up the party is a live set from Zero Percent, the side project of The Presets’ Kim Moyes and veteran producer/DJ Mike Callander. These guys know their way around obscene amounts of equipment so expect something special. Filling out the lineup is a strong selection of Melbourne DJ talent: Retza, Chiara Kickdrum, Steve Ward, Machete, Illuccio, Karl Devic and Kirk Chetcuti. It kicks off at 1pm.
This weekend we’ll experience a huge step up in Melbourne’s bread game as Gontran Cherrier releases his exciting workshops as a part of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. On Saturday, Gontran will be rolling his ever so delicate croissants in the Collingwood store, and then on Sunday, baking bread for us using a type of imported French flour he swears makes all the difference. We’re also able to purchase the first few croissants and loaves from the oven, if we’re lucky. Just to rise your appetite a little higher, Gontran’s just released a range of special hot cross buns like Macadamia and chocolate, chocolate and hazelnut and cinnamon and raisin.
Dinner is about sharing, coming together and enjoying the offerings in front of us as one. Feeling closer upon completion than you originally did before you first sat down. This is exactly what Little Africa down in North Melbourne offers as an unforgettable dining experience. What I love about Little Africa is their dedication to coming together as a group. Their sharing plates come out on colourful woven baskets draped in injera – a tasty Ethiopian bread. On top are variations of curries, salads and vegetables. Together as a table you use your hands to rip the soft textured bread apart and eat the food on offer. Not only is it fun, but dining at Little Africa is exactly what dinners are suppose to bring to life; the coming together and sharing of friends and family. Plus, their fish curry is beyond a dream.

Vir Das By Declan Harrick
As laughable as it may seem, Vir Das is far more than the multifaceted musician, actor, and comedian he is revered for. And while all these aspects have seen the talented Indian comedian climb the ranks of Bollywood and the international comedy circuit alike, it is what Das has done for his home country that truly separates him as an international talent. “When I first started in India, stand-up was a very posh thing,” says Das. “It was almost entirely confined to country clubs,” with the comedian continuing to affirm that this was just as banal as it sounded. Yet, rather than be impugned by the circumstances, Das saw an opening few others would dare look at. “There were a wave of young fans looking for something more. So all of a sudden I found myself standing on stage talking about my balls and pretty soon the kids followed.” From here the comedian has seemingly gone from strength to strength, selling over half a million tickets for his two stand-up tours across India, the US and UK on his way to becoming India’s highest selling English-speaking comedian. The talented Mumbai local has also established himself as quite the formidable force in Bollywood,
with his decade-long career producing ten films, with two more to come later this year. Moreover, his scarily impressive resume has seen him establish the Weirdass Pajama Festival, that – like all things Das – has quickly grown from a one-city festival that saw 4,000 people attend in its first year to a three-city one that accounted for over 29,000 people merely two years later – although he jokingly notes that he is “yet to make a fucking cent”. Rather than rest on his laurels, Das has done the complete opposite, with the announcement of his international Boarding Das Tour coming at arguably the busiest time of the man’s life. And while it may seem like a peculiar time to announce such an allconsuming endeavor, the comedian hardly sees it so. “I have what I want, this is all about self discovery,” states Das, while also pointing to the
success of Indian comedians Aziz Ansari and Russell Peters as further proof as to why the time is now to embark on another international tour. “Every culture has their own hybrid form of comedy,” he says. And while India can lay claim to a more theatrical form of stand up – one Das likens to a performance or a piece of theatre rather than strictly “standing around and telling jokes” – the comedian definitely has his own twist on the form. If an interview with The Times of India is any indication, then Australian audiences can expect a fully fledged performance mixed with a comedian who at times may forget to listen to his mother’s advice not to discuss dicks on stage. Indeed, Das is excited for his chance to do just that on his upcoming world tour, one the comedian notes will truly be “a journey back to zero”.
“Every culture has their own hybrid form of comedy.” Vir Das will appear at The Comic’s Lounge on Thursday May 25 and Saturday May 27.
Review:
Trainspotting Live Following sold out runs at the 2015 and 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Trainspotting Live arrives in Melbourne as part of this year’s Comedy Festival and it’ll be, without a doubt, unlike any trip to the theatre you’ve ever had before. As you descend the stairs into the basement theatre on Flinders Lane the sound of thumping electronic music begins to intensifies and you realise you’re not in for your average adaptation. You’re greeted and adorned with glow sticks before heading through to the performance space where the cast are dancing like madmen to mid ‘90s techno music, building an energy and an atmosphere that is unmatched. What follows is one of the most energetic and confronting performances you’re likely to see at this year’s festival. The performers give their hearts and souls to their performances, baring themselves (sometime literarily) for the audience and diving head first into the world of drug addiction. They showcase both the frivolity and pathos that comes with this lifestyle as they seamlessly move through the vignettes that make up Irvine Welsh’s original novel. 18
BEAT.COM.AU
You’ve been warned, however. Audience participation is inevitable with this performances as the actors run, jump, scream and grab at unsuspecting audience members throughout. Don’t worry though, this just adds to the fun and exhilaration of what you’re seeing and you can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement or nerves when a performer comes close by. This intrusiveness works in the same way the source material did, using it for comedy and to confront the audience but this also works to connect us with the characters and helps land the effect of the more dramatic elements of the show. While most people are more familiar with the 1996 film version, it’s probably worth noting that this production is based off Irvine Welsh’s original novel, which helps to separate it from previous versions, giving it it’s own life while the cast instil
it with a distinct sense or urgency. It never exploits its source material, just simply reinterprets it and to great effect. It’s creative, bold and completely unique making it one of the must see shows at this year’s festival. By Chris Swan

Beat asked some key members about why they’re on board, and why you should get involved.
“Keeping live music alive is a constant battle. Don’t sit on the sidelines. Get in the action. It’s like Vikings only without the killing and fucking. Actually there may be some fucking if you’re young and lucky.”
“The more members Music Victoria has, the louder our voice and more seriously we will be taken by government and businesses, and our ability to negotiate bigger and better deals for our members.”

“I joined up in my last year of University (2014) because I wanted to follow and support the work MV was doing around the Agent of Change and venue closure. Cough “There’s not much in the name but it speaks to the music that we write, sort of the dirge of what we create. There’s no big deeper meaning there,”
It seems as if West Virginia has been sitting on music gold – sticky gold, mind you. From the swamps of the US state, several great groups have emerged into the light of day, establishing themselves as powerhouses of doom metal and shaking up the scene with a rattling rage. Cough are one of these groups, with a heavy sound bound to make eyeballs melt. Supporting their close friends and collaborators Windhand, Cough are en route to Australia for a mind warping tour. Because Cough work so closely with Windhand, frontman David Cisco anticipates some eventful times ahead. “We’ve never been on tour with a band so close to us,” Cisco says, “They’re [Windhand] from our hometown so I would imagine it’s going to be a little more comfortable, hopefully not too close for comfort. I’ve never really done this before so we’ll have to find out. “We play and are labelled within the same genre, for any listener we definitely have a very unique sound compared to Windhand.” Indeed, so close are Cough with their fellow swamp people that they even share a bassist – Parker Chandler, founding member of Cough along with Cisco, splits his time between the two bands which given the rate of success and recording activity of both over recent years would surely create confusion for the two groups. Cisco says that’s not necessarily the case. “There’s always a bit of a juggle – Windhand has been pretty active in spurts,” says Cisco. “This last year they were quiet so we were able to get a lot done with Cough, we were able to finish up [new album] Still They Pray and get that released – there’s always a juggle with Parker being in Windhand. “A lot of the time we find a way to keep the song writing process clean and when we’re all together we
try and arrange stuff, once we have time to get all in the same room together.” You wouldn’t have thought that naming your band Cough would generate the most brutal imagery for a metal band, so where exactly did the name come from? Laughing, and ironically, coughing to clear his throat, Cisco says, “I don’t really remember – Parker and I started this band when we were in college together – we were pretty young. I think it came out of some magazine. It was something that stuck, it embodies what we’re about it.” Try coughing – go on, have a really good hard cough yourself – the sounds you erupt are what Cisco says typify the band’s sound. “There’s not much in the name but it speaks to the music that we write, sort of the dirge of what we create. There’s no big deeper meaning there,” he says. Indeed, the dirge of their music causes a little animosity among Cough. Where they have been described in the press as “tortured misanthropic doom”, associates Windhand have been placed into the doom metal pigeonhole, a tag their drummer
Ryan Wolfe recently told me he is strongly against. Labels, as Cisco explains, are not really for Cough either. “Inserting a band into a category is extremely limiting and the individuals in this band, we come from a lot of different backgrounds we’ve grown up listening to different types of music, not just heavy metal or metal or hard rock, but even old bluegrass and country music. “It’s very important to take elements from the culture you were raised in and the music that’s affected all parts of your life and to limit to yourself to that category, call it doom metal or whatever, it’s extremely limiting.”
Cough will team up with Windhand at Corner Hotel on Friday April 7. Still They Pray is out now via Relapse Records.

I Prevail They say you shouldn’t try to run before you know how to walk, but in the case of I Prevail, that’s just silly. I Prevail hit the ground running in a marathon of success and recognition, one which they are winning at an exponential rate. Currently wrapping up the North American stretch of their Lifelines tour, I Prevail have already proven themselves to be relentless, talented and true – the success of this tour a testament to their incredible music. “We sold out 95% of the [North American shows],” says lead guitarist Steve Menoian. “Only a couple didn’t sell out so far, but we’ve had amazing turn outs, great crowds, great support bands. We’ve played a bunch of new songs off the new album and it’s been a blast.” And Australia is next. “We had a lot of really great support coming out of Australia,” says Menoian, “We’ve been so sure of our line from day one, we’re super pumped to be able to try to get over there, try to return the favour [of support], perform and have some fun.” Indeed, for a country they’ve never been to, I Prevail have broken mainstream metal here with unequivocal success. Their first full album Lifelines debuted at number eight on the ARIA charts in its first week and stayed in the top 20 for consecutive weeks. On top of this, every single on the album has been at the top of the iTunes metal and overall charts for the months leading up to the album’s release. Amazingly, Lifelines is still the number one album in the metal charts five months later and all three singles remain in the metal top ten. It goes without saying that if you haven’t done so already, these boys are certainly worth a listen. “It’s definitely surreal,” Menoian says of their frenzied reception in Australia. “As an artist all you can do is make the music you’re going to put out and make it as well as you can, you just have to put it out to the world and hope for the best.
“As an artist all you can do is make the music you’re going to put out and make it as well as you can, you just have to put it out to the world and hope for the best.” “It speaks to the support of the heavy music and rock music scene in Australia, that to support a band like us,with some of the other great bands on the heavier side of things that have come out of Australia, like Parkway Drive, Amity Affliction, there’s obviously a great market there. “We’re lucky to have the fans we have, especially in Australia, and we’re ready to go give it everything we’ve got on stage – we’re just happy to have the fan base to get over there and perform.” With the upcoming Australian tour being the first opportunity for Aussie fans to experience Lifelines live on stage, it’s interesting to learn that I Prevail are one of few bands in the genre who actually had an intended purpose when they set out to write the album. “We had a pretty specific vision in mind – I don’t know if we could have perfectly articulated it verbally but we could see it or hear it in our heads, and it was a matter of getting it out,” Menoian says.
“We had an EP [Heart Vs. Mind], it was the first thing we put out that definitely laid the groundwork for what the sound would be in terms of mixing heavy elements with big choruses and ballads. “We set up the sound well for what we wanted to be on the EP and our goal for the album was to execute better pretty much every aspect and keep all the different sonic influences we had, but make them better, more mature, more meaningful. Especially lyrically, because we had a lot to say after what we went through. We’re proud of it and we’re fortunate to have had it reach as many people as it has so far and we think it’s only the beginning.”
I Prevail will take over Corner Hotel on Saturday April 1 (Sold Out) and Tuesday April 4 and Arrow On Swanston on Sunday April 2.

Bullhorn Bullhorn are a nine-piece band that features seven hard-hitting horn players, a bossing drummer and a frontman who is intoxicating with his rhythmic wordplay and charismatic stage presence. After having an incredibly busy summer performing at Queenscliff Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Mullum Festival, just to name a few, it’s time for Bullhorn to perform at Blenheim Festival. Their upbeat, high-energy shows take elements from a wide range of genres that depict their musical background. Steve Buchanan, the man in charge of the sousaphone, started it all. “I formed the group in 2011 as an instrumental group. We didn’t even get an MC involved until 2013. The concept was doing brass band music but playing really with modern material. At the time I was doing a lot of D&B, hip hop, funk and soul,” he says. “We’re not just that jazz stuff that brass bands tend to be, our format is quite different.” Contrary to popular belief, it was not The Breakfast Club line “you mess with the bull, you get the horns” that gave inspiration to naming the band but a movie called Black Dynamite. Buchanan says, “There’s a character in Black Dynamite, which is a remake of a black exploitation movie that’s called Bullhorn. When we were coming together I saw that movie and immediately thought it was a rad, awesome and hilarious name.” After performing at a plethora of major festivals their live gig has vastly changed their setup. The type of gigs they have been doing and the need to adapt to each venue ensures a fresh and dynamic show. “It ranges from playing at the bottom like all other
“We’re not just that jazz stuff that brass bands tend to be, our format is quite different.” bands and doing the local and more intimate shows, to working our way up and playing at bigger festivals like Woodford Folk Festival in front of 20,000 people,” Buchanan says. “That’s definitely been our biggest and most loved gig. We were pretty much prime time on New Years Eve from 10.50pm to 11.30pm. The crowd was absolutely frothing, with everyone dancing and our energy at an all time high.” Having been around for the past six years, the discography and repertoire of Bullhorn is quite vast but their favourite song to play live is Roll Off The Top, a single from their last album. “It always starts with MC Roman doing a freestyle where he gets a few people in the front to give him a few random words. He’s an incredibly gifted freestyle artist; he creates these incredible stories from what he is given. It’s different every time and this song has always been about embracing the chaos.” Bullhorn has had a plethora of releases, with their most recent Uphill EP. In the lead up to their heavy touring schedule they always find time to write a few more songs. Their creative process often starts with a single band member. “[They come up with] a concept for a
tune and will sit down on a program and put down ideas to paper. Then we run the grooves at rehearsals with Roman and go back and forth making modifications. “It can be quite long with the nine of us as there’s rewriting, reprinting and a heavy amount of collaborating to be done. It’s constant, we have rehearsals every week trialing new ideas and then separate rehearsals for tightening up for our live show,” Buchanan says. The rest of 2017 is an exciting time for a band like Bullhorn. “We’re hoping to drop a new single at the end of the year. We just went to New Zealand as part of out first international tour, which we absolutely loved. Now we are looking for more international gigs but we still have to admit that we have a heap of growth to be done within Australia. “By hitting the festival circuit as hard as we did, we are starting to spread our wings and do more awesome live shows. The Blenheim festival in the only gig we have in South Australia in mid-April so we’re super psyched for that.”
Bullhorn will perform at Brunswick Hotel on Sunday April 30 and at Blenheim Music Festival Thursday April 13 - Friday April 14 in Clare Valley, South Australia.

Ben Wright Smith Despite his talent, and the sheer volume of praise and support he’s received in his young life, Ben Wright Smith is softly spoken and completely devoid of ego. He stammers as he reflects upon himself and his achievements, the completion and release of his debut album The Great Divorce not greatly affecting how he sees himself on the music scene. “It’s funny with first albums, I think I feel more competent as a musician, but I think I’ve got to wait for people to hear it first, that will probably affect my confidence greatly. With music, I don’t know if confidence is the thing that matters. We make what we want to make, the main thing is the relief of having a full album that I can share with people, and say this is what I’ve been doing, this is what I’ve done, and this is how I wanted it to sound.” Considering Wright Smith’s impressive resume and masterful skill for songwriting, it feels strange that the APRA award nominated musician’s first album is only just being released. It arrives just over three years since he first made his way to the USA after being awarded the Australian Council for the Arts Nashville Songwriting Residency. The release of No One announced his arrival on Australia’s music scene in 2015, and the follow up, 2016’s Sand Grabber, demonstrated his ability to twist the genre of his music to make it his own. But the release of these two singles is an entirely different game to releasing this first album, Wright Smith says. “When I first started writing these songs, I looked forward to the idea of people listening, and I guess I didn’t realise that once the songs are out there you don’t have anything to do with them anymore.
“With music, I don’t know if confidence is the thing that matters. We make what we want to make.” It’s all about the people who are listening, how they interpret it, and whether or not they like it. “The idea of having a body of work graded is new to me. I don’t think I’ve had something marked since I was in school. Maybe I’ll get marks for trying,” he says. The Great Divorce, produced by Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy, took quite a time to make, with Wright Smith beginning the process of writing in Nashville, and sharing time between there and Melbourne. “I think it took so long because we didn’t think we were going to make an album. We started off with a bunch of songs we were recording over two years ago, when me and a few friends were living in Nashville. We recorded one song back here, which was called No One. “After that, people seemed to really like it, that allowed us to keep making more.” The pressure of a first album meant Wright Smith truly felt alien in the experience at times. “The whole way through I felt like it wasn’t going to get done. It was okay until I was 90 per cent done, but then as with almost anything you do, the last ten per cent is the hardest.
“Luckily, at that point we had people around saying to me and Oscar that we had to finish an album. We had to really make sure it was the way that we wanted it before we showed it to the world.” Filled with cameos and personal touches from close friends, The Great Divorce is somewhat of a marriage of a diverse mix of catchy folk tunes, laced with the detail and talent that makes Wright Smith such an exciting songwriter. His Melbourne recording at Collingwood studio The Aviary saw the flair of Tyler Millott, Jesse Williams, Andrew Braidner and good friend and perpetual feature on his music, Ali Barter added to the mix, while Australian producer Mark Moffatt provided input in Nashville. “Ali Barter is singing a fair bit throughout. She wrote on the first song as well. We almost didn’t have her on there. That was one of those final ten per cent things. It was like ‘What is wrong with this song?’ Everything sounded okay, but something was missing. Ali happened to walk into the studio, and she made it what it was meant to sound like in my head.”
Ben Wright Smith will perform at Northcote Social Club on Saturday July 29. The Great Divorce is out now via MGM.

Album of the Week (Pool House Records/Remote Control Records)
Singles With Lachlan Kanoniuk I hope the history books will forever show that Sarah Perkins is a premiership Crow and Tex Walker is not.
Single of the Week:
Hex
Page of Pentacles
(Independent)
Sick licks and a sense of overseeing detachment come together for something pretty spesh coming from New Zealand trio Hex, concocting a mix that effortlessly blends sharp post-punk and sprawling desert rock on Page Of Pentacles. Caught them over New Year’s and they’re even sicker live – they’re hopping over the ditch for a shitload of Melbourne shows this April, you’d be an egg to miss out.
Kendrick Lamar
The Heart Part 4
(TDE)
The cold war between Kendrick and Drake continues to get a little hotter, with Kendrick firing a standalone warning salvo for his upcoming fourth LP, soon after Drake’s pretty great More Life. The Heart Part 4 sets the tone lyrically, signalling a take-no-prisoners approach. Kenny always walks the walk after talking the talk, but anything short of another classic on album number four will be a letdown.
Perfume Genius
Slip Away
(Matador)
Slip Away feels as if Mike Hadreas is whispering comfort during a space shuttle launch at a renaissance fair, corporeal and climactic. It’s all too brief. I guess that’s part of the magic. Sheer satisfaction, a tinge of longing.
Iggy Azalea
Mo Bounce
(Sony)
Who knew Mullumbimby has an even richer Bounce heritage than New Orleans? This is pure hell.
The Smith Street Band
More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me gets straight down to business with the fast-paced, punchy rock track Forrest kicking off the album, followed by the lighter, more reserved Birthdays.
Here listeners learn this album is not going to be a fully charged, gunsblazing rock album but rather a concise and descriptive journey lead by the ever autobiographical Wil Wagner. Next up, Death To The Lads serves as a reminder of The Smith Street Band’s undeniable charm with the pub rock anthem delivering a slick, classic Aussie rock melody and singalong chorus that’s almost impossible not to chime in with. The album proceeds to snake between light-hearted, upbeat tracks like the jangly Passiona, and darker, stomp-all-over-your-heart pieces of songwriting fraught with heavy rock riffs and raw emotion, such as Suffer. The album ends on a soft note with the stripped back Laughing (Or Pretending To Laugh) displaying a fragile vulnerability that Wagner usually masks with angry chords and screamed lyrics. For a group with such a distinctive signature sound, The Smith Street Band have managed to keep this album fresh, delivering a diverse range of tracks unlike anything we’ve heard from them before. This is no doubt aided by the band’s experimentation with synthesizers, electronic drum kits, chorale harmonies and orchestral string instruments, as well as guest appearances from You Am I frontman Tim Rogers, Laura Stevenson and Jess Locke. Much like the relationships these songs were written about, the album weaves through lows and highs with Wagner laying his guts on the table and delivering hard-hitting one liners with his gravelly vocals, doused in the sincerity of someone who is singing about extremely personal experiences. Australian indie folk music has a new queen. Her name is Domini Forster. Opening with Under Water, edgy xylophone melodies combined with softly picked guitar and the honey dripped vocals of Forster play out in a great opening track. Put it simply, she knows how to craft a folk pop gem. Gentle and melodic, it’s easy to get lost in the sweeping sounds of Black Dog. Recorded in Pt Lonsdale at A Pocket Full Of Stones by Nick Huggins, this album showcases the delicate and heart-warming lyricism of Forster, which can be heard most prominently on In The Dark. If you’re looking to make a comparison, think a cross between Laura Marling, Sufjan Stevens with a hint of Joni Mitchell thrown in for good measure. Stand outs on the record are Turn The Light On and album closer For Tomorrow. This is an album that is sure to bring a smile to your face whenever you listen to it. A crafty debut full of sweeping string arrangements, delicate folk songs and one that will definitely be on repeat for a while. By Tex Miller

Ironbark
8.0
The Waifs are warmly welcomed back to the Australian music scene with their new album Ironbark, a nod to their core influences – friends, family, a love of music and performing, and Australia itself. Most predominant in their new 25-track album is this Australis theme, a tribute to its nature and its people, essential ingredients in the extraordinary body of work the Waifs have created in the 25 years since they formed. The chemistry throughout the album is intensely apparent, as is the tension born of the organic, largely spontaneous production. The theme of strength and endurance is clear. The earthy feel of the acoustic twangs, the exquisite harmonies of the sisters, and the smooth rolls of the bass lines communicate powerful musings of love and land. The Shack is an example of a track immersed in land and sea, a meander through Cunningham’s youth. Lion and Gazelle radiates mournful yearning and emotional turmoil, as does the wrenching Done and Dusted. Thorn references her roots on The Coast with ponders of the treacherous coastline near her family home in Albany, WA. Dirty Little Bird returns to reflections on love. This album is their biggest and strongest collection of studio recordings yet.

Exanimate
7.0
Exanimate sounds like the work of hairy Swedes with names akin to IKEA furniture – but it’s not. These guys are from Melbourne, though the melodic death metal they peddle is indebted to the Gothenburg scene of the mid ‘90s. If you’re a fan of At the Gates, In Flames, et al. pull up a chair and get acquainted with your new favourite melodeath crusaders. They’ve studied The Big Book of Swedish Melodic Death Metal from front to back, and have poured what they’ve learnt into 11 searing tracks. It ticks all the boxes: vocals that ping pong between screech and guttural belch? Check. Anxietyinducing tempos? Check. Caustic riffs, tremolo picking and sizzling leads? You bet. They crank the BPMs into the red – keep up or be left for dead. For an indie effort, it does sound massive: choice cuts like Defiling Paradise and Wildfire kick like a mule to the goolies. Infect, Replace, Disintegrate’s black metal tinge and orchestral strings add some nice variety too. Who cares if it’s not the most original sounding debut? It’s a slick effort from a promising up-and-comer in the Melbourne metal scene. These tracks will leave mosh pits depraved, filthinfested messes. You’ve been warned. By Jack Pilven

If there was ever any doubt from the more sceptical of critics as to the musical abilities of Steel Panther, these opinions are blown out of the water with new release Lower The Bar. Steel Panther’s X-rated tendencies and flirtatious filth is still present lyrically, but they’ve done the opposite of what the album title suggests – Steel Panther have risen the bar musically. There’s something in the arrangements that really enable you to notice the band’s skill, guitarist Satchel’s acoustic finger picking very bold throughout the ballad numbers. Now The Fun Starts is one of those rare opportunities you can hook in to the crass language of Steel Panther, the sleazy story more obvious over a stripped-back arrangement of more sombre bass riffs from Lexxi Foxx. What’s really great about this release is how Steel Panther have seemingly risen beyond the realms of satire – Lower The Bar is exemplary of a band who really, are just being themselves and are utterly unapologetic about it – and rightly so. It’s a refreshing mantra for the mainstream, one they should certainly not be criticised for, not when they write songs this good.

The New Pornographers have undergone metamorphosis since their last release with two long term members departing the band. Unobtrusive, the blend of three strong vocalists works well and builds a strong foundation upon which the band can rely for their consistent entry onto the North American charts. Whiteout Conditions doesn’t indicate that there will be any change to this principle. High Ticket Attractions is jolting Men Without Hats that should garner a larger audience for the band. Given that their career is now well advanced, don’t expect this to be a leap into the unknown or a definitive statement of intent. Whiteout Conditions is solid and muscular, reflecting the collective talents of the band with every member having the opportunity to share the limelight. We’ve Been Here Before, is like ELO or Genesis may have tackled in the day, while Avalanche Alley is sinewy cerebral power pop. The impression is that The New Pornographers want to return to headier, more naive times, they also possess the sparkle of rejuvenation that comes with age and experience. Despite sometimes shuffling along their own well worn path, they remain an engrossing listen.

Wilderness of Love

Someone at work referred to me as a hippy the other day. I contemplated a bullying and harassment charge or even criminal defamation, before settling with an empty threat to illustrate my offence. “Call me a hippy again and you’re dead meat,” I retorted, invoking the empty schoolyard language of my (not-at-all hippy) youth. But as my once-hippie wife reminds me, hippies aren’t all that bad. After all, would an album of the glistening psychedelic beauty of Shadow Band’s Wilderness of Love have ever been created without the middle-class drop-outs and purveyors of vacuous philosophical discourse of generations past and present? Why shouldn’t the world hear the mesmerising, ethereal nocturnal lysergic wonder of Endless Night, the haunting postBrian Jonestown Massacre introspection of Shadowland or the Nancy Sinatra and Jim Morrison ornithological psychedelia of Eagle Unseen? Or what of the cosmic enlightenment of Morning Star, the Buffalo Springfield splendour of Mad John or the cerebral awakening of Darksider’s Blues? Hippies can be as annoying as fuck, but they did, sometimes inadvertently, pave the path for psychedelia. And without that path we wouldn’t have Shadow Band. By Patrick Emery BEAT.COM.AU

Five Simple Drugs with Greenthief
Living in Melbourne’s inner north. What’s not to love about the northside? I don’t think I could ever leave. Moving to Melbourne from Adelaide, I love this city, and although the southside is great, you can’t beat walking down the road to the Tote, Old Bar, The Bendigo to have a beer and watch local bands or going out for a bender at Yah Yah’s. Actual drugs. Let’s get this out of the way. I love drugs. Most people love drugs. No, I’m not talking about pingers, I’m talking about caffeine. The coffee culture in Australia is one of the best in the world – does that make our baristas professional drug dealers? Slip streaming an Emergency vehicle in peak hour traffic. Don’t pretend you haven’t done this, or at least thought about it. Apart from the fact that an emergency is occurring, this is an excellent manoeuvre to save 30 minutes on Punt Road. Turn a negative into a positive. Actually this is terrible. David Attenborough’s voice. There’s nothing more relaxing than listening to David’s soothing voice while he explains how the catfish in a French village have evolved to hunt pigeons. Yelling ‘I love Black Sabbath’ when a Led Zeppelin song comes on at Cherry Bar. This has been a ongoing joke in the band for a while. If you want a dude in a denim jacket with a Slayer iron-on patch to hate you even more than he hates Beliebers, this is the way to go. We love that place. facebook.com/greenthiefband

Ezekiel Ox
What is your new EP Proper Gander all about? It’s about taking a stand on the streets, in the clubs and at home. I think most people know the system is broken, that it delivers for the rich and kicks the poor and vulnerable, with Proper Gander I wanted to validate those feelings for people, and on tracks like Propaganda and History, give strength and strategy on how we can win. It’s also about the funk. How was the experience of recording the EP? Absolutely sensational. I hooked up with Steve at Muscle Mothership through a mate from Darwin, and we gelled immediately. We’d press record with Steve on drums and me on the mic, and then freestyle for ten minutes. When we’d finished we’d piece together the hooks and make a song, then we layered the guitar and bass over those freestyle beds. Who are the members in your live band? Steven Smith on drums/vocals. He’s a great friend, and plays live with Briggs and Caiti Baker. Sarox Martin on bass/vocals – she’s amazing, a ball of energy and brings the funk. We’re also welcoming Leigh Davies on guitars, who’s played in Sleep Parade, The Occupants, Lunar Sea and Cairo Knife Fight to name a few. It’s a crack pro squad, and we’re having a blast. What can punters expect from the show? I’ll be playing the Proper Gander EP in full, plus a selection of hits from my work with Mammal, Full Scale and The Nerve. Expect a pumping band, great tunes and an active dancefloor. Also expect a raised middle finger to the ruling class, and a big warm hug for the workers. If you’ve seen me perform before, you’ll know what you’re in for, so tell a friend I’m back performing rock and roll.

5 Rad Things with Rad Island’s Yam Davies
Playing music with your friends: We’re grateful that we live in a country/socio-economic bracket that allows us to do what we love with our best friends. It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone has that privilege. We’re in a great position to help change that and make sure that music is a place for everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, background, etc. Animals: Cats, dogs, koalas… They’re all good. We’ll argue til we’re blue in the face that animals are better than people. They’re curious and entertaining and they’ll make some of the best friends you’ll ever have. Fruit with stones in it: Nothing good comes easy and fruit is no exception to that rule. Mangos, plums, peaches, apricots, cherries… the list goes on. Giving a shit about local music: Local artists deserve your support. We owe a lot to venues like Blackwire, Record Paradise, Beatdisc, Loophole… smaller venues that allowed us to cut our teeth and learn how to function autonomously. It’s a shame some of these venues are now shutting their doors because of noise complaints and strict liquor licensing laws. Your next favourite band is probably a bunch of 17 year olds making a horrendous racket in their Mum’s garage, so if you can afford to do so, go to shows, buy a record and be part of the things you want to see. Guitars: They’re the very best instrument. Look it up. They’re definitely better than bass and drums. facebook.com/radislandband

Pleasure Dome
Can you give us a run through of the first episode of Pleasure Dome? The pilot of Pleasure Dome aims to invite the audience briefly into the world of its eight main characters. It treads lightly into themes of mental illness while maintaining a light and witty rapport between the eight friends. You’re currently running a Pozible campaign in order to fund the series. What’s the go there? The pilot was completely funded by the core crew members and everyone was donating their time, skills and talents. This is amazing as a starting point, but it’s definitely not a sustainable long term plan. The Pozible campaign (if successful) will allow us the freedom to dedicate ourselves to this project and make it as fantastic as we know it can be. The soundtrack includes only local bands and artists, why was this choice made? Using only local, under represented musicians was part of the initial idea behind Pleasure Dome. We wanted to give these artists a platform for their music to be visually interpreted that perhaps wouldn’t have been available to them otherwise. For us, the soundtrack depicts the stories of these characters as much as the dialogue does. What have we got to look forward to in future episodes? The first season of Pleasure Dome travels through themes of identity, sexuality, beers, gender fluidity, mental illness, death, dogs and a period blood incident. What else can we do to support this project? Definitely head over to our YouTube channel and watch the pilot. Share it with your friends, listen to the bands, tell your mum about it and get your rich friends to give us money.

Five Wild Shows with Sienna Wild
The Cherry Dolls. We supported The Cherry Dolls last year at Yah Yah’s and it was amazing. Great energy and they just rocked out, a great live act. Wild shit. Warragul. We played a gig in Warragul a few months ago and the crowd was insane. You need love when you are on the road and that gig was amazing for us. Kingswood. Recently we saw Kingswood in Melbourne and they were just phenomenal. Really inspired us. Red Hot Chilli Peppers. One of the wildest shows we have seen was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Big Day Out about four years ago. It was an unforgettable gig. Sienna Wild. We are hoping our EP launch will be the wildest show yet. Every launch we have had so far has been wet and wild. facebook.com/siennawildmusic
Top Five Fleetwood Mac Tracks
Isn’t It Midnight Christine wrote some truly huge anthems for Tango In The Night including Little Lies and Everywhere, but also another single (that didn’t go anywhere in the charts) called Isn’t It Midnight. A seductive, cleverly written pop gem with huge guitar work – JMS Harrison. Silver Springs. Haunting, ethereal and dream-like. A song loaded with raw emotion and carried by Stevie’s soaring voice. Every lyric lays it all on the line. We’ve all loved, lost and had the one that got away who will haunt us forever in the back of our minds. Simple, beautiful, powerful – Nicholas Gramm Gypsy. One of the songs I remember from a very early age, which has a strong sentimental attachment, is Gypsy. Another perfect Stevie song in every way, that I’d often hear in Dad’s car on 3MP or on my friend’s Dad’s radio in his kitchen, while he was getting day drunk – JMS Harrison. Tango In the Night. This title track is a classic Lindsey Buckingham composition; he has such a way of writing these simple yet complex pop/rock songs. There’s a real atmosphere of regret and loneliness, then it kicks in to one of the hugest choruses I’ve heard. The real clincher is that absolutely fiery guitar solo that closes the song – Gordon Holland Storms. I love their album Tusk. It’s probably my equal favourite with Tango In The Night. Lindsey wrote awesome silly songs on this record and Christine kept it safe but high quality, Stevie kept it direct and fragile with songs like Storms and Beautiful Child – JMS Harrison.

Tanzer’s Top Five Twin Peaks Characters
Laura Palmer. A star was born the second they unwrapped her ‘corpse’. And she’s no one-dimensional muse. Her complex, unpredictable character continues to unfold throughout the series – iconic, unforgettable, and accompanied by the most tearjerking Badalamenti piano moment ever. Agent Dale Cooper. Anxious, dreamy and obsessed with finding the truth – also one of my personal butch icons. Agent Denise Bryson. The first transgender person I ever encountered, on or off TV. The fact her colleagues barely blinked when she transitioned is great. Audrey Horne. Sex bomb, queen coquette, style icon, bad girl – you’d have to be dead not to fall under Sherilyn Fenn’s spell. The Log Lady. The kind of WTF character who can only exist in a David Lynch world.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard The Night Cat, Fitzroy, Thursday March 23
Considering the current enormity of King Gizzard, it really strikes home how lucky Melburnians are to experience this incredible band in such an intimate setting. As an eclectic crowd of the eager punters jostled for a spot, The Gizz entered the circle to thunderous applause and adoration. For the first half of their whopping double set, it was all about showing off the new toys. Beginning with the kinetic Open Water, the true majesty of Flying Microtonal Banana became immediately evident in a live space. Despite the often frantic nature of their work, the band itself was never frenetic. Their talent exuded a controlled, hypnotic quality – the crowd bopped along in trance-like rhythm, wide-eyed and fixated, to the precision of tracks like Nuclear Fusion and an incredible rendition of Billabong Valley with serene vocals from Ambrose Kenny-Smith (who also rocked some mean bongo drums). If nothing else, watching twin drummers Michael Cavanaugh and Eric Moore face each other and weave a flawless synchronicity
Kingswood
170 Russell, Sunday March 26 Kingswood feel like some kind of brilliant secret. An incredible talent with a dedicated and passionate fanbase, possessing the ability to make a new listener fall in love on first listen. Though the Melburnian four-piece came back by popular demand for a second show after selling out the first in their hometown, it still felt as though they should play to and sell out far bigger venues. An electric energy underlined the show, and though they have an old-school rock’n’roll swagger out in full force, they never came across as apathetic or arrogant. With an impressive on stage support, including backing vocalists and trumpets, their jazz-tinged, bluesy vibes were enhanced, particularly on newer material. Kingswood are not afraid to play around with different sounds and genres to create their own signature style of music, however in the middle of the show this proved a slight weakness. The setlist felt disjointed, and the flow of tracks from 2016’s After Hours, Close to Dawn and Microscopic Wars didn’t work as well as
as if it required no effort at all was bloody mesmerising. The energy gradually escalated, building to an almighty crescendo when they capped off their microtonal delights with Rattlesnake. Suddenly, bodies were flinging themselves everywhere. Crowdsurfing and ecstatic singing instantly became the atmospheric norm of the night, with one overly-enthusiastic attendee getting some serious air and accidently knocking a light globe out of the roof before the song’s end. This party, it seemed, was just starting. With enthusiasm amped at maximum capacity, The Gizz returned to the stage after a brief break and powered relentlessly into the face-melting likes of Nonagon Infinity and I’m In Your Mind Fuzz, Robot Stop, Evil Death Roll and Gamma Knife bought the thunder as Stu Mackenzie – giving in to the electric atmosphere around him – continuously thrust his guitar into the air. The likes of Cellophane injected the room with a whole host of groove, fits of chants erupting from a sea of beaming faces.
Finally, the band broke the tension when they inevitably played the deliciously crowd-pleasing People Vultures. With a career-spanning final set, King Gizzard proved why they are so beloved – they hold an utmost respect for craft, creativity and showmanship. To witness a band that will come to be known as a vital influence for many future musicians in the cozy comfort of your local, should be recognised for the magical experience it is. By Jacob Colliver Highlight: Cellophane. Lowlight: Being extra-sweaty, because I wore a jacket and scarf, like an idiot. Crowd favourite: Rattlesnake and People Vultures.
one would hope, though newer gems Golden and Library Books were met with as much adoration from the crowd as ICFTYDLM. Still, the final act showed their heart-on-sleeve rock at full throttle. The harmonies between vocalists were flawless, their hooks and guitar solos – of which there were plenty – flowed perfectly and wowed the crowd with their musicality. Fergus Linacre jumped into the audience for an extended refrain of singing “You can stay a little longer,” during Ohio, and it felt as fresh as the day he first felt the urge to do so. Micro Wars swept the entire audience away into a world of vulnerable rock, and Creepin showed them at their absolute Kingswood best. Waving fans farewell, as the show wrapped up, witnessing the gratitude and genuine, happy disbelief on the band’s faces was an endearing and gorgeous moment. By Claire Morley Highlight: Singing Micro Wars as loudly as I possibly could. Lowlight: That the crowd was so dense I couldn’t push my way forward for a closer position. Crowd Favourite: Can I say whole show? Surely I can, it’s my review. Whole show. Photo by David Harris

Gig of the Week
I Heart Hiroshima
The world thought it had lost indie rockers I Heart Hiroshima when their drummer Sullivan Patten moved to Berlin in 2011. I Heart Hiroshima played with an array of heavy hitters including Ratatat, Peaches and Cat Power, released two studio albums and then seemingly faded into the aether. Then they shot back into the scene in 2016 following Sully’s return to Australia, releasing a new EP in December, Spillin’ the Light. As the band has only played a few shows since their reformation, fans and newcomers will be excited to hear that I Heart Hiroshima are making their way to Melbourne for a special show with no wave duo Astral Skulls. You can catch them spreading their sweet vibes and tunes at the Northcote Social Club this Sunday April 2 starting at 8pm. Tickets are $20. Check Eventbrite for tickets and more info.

Backstage
Bob Evans He may have over two decades of experience under his belt, but it’s been nearly four years since Bob Evans, the alter ego and solo project of Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell, has taken to the stage in all his solo glory. longer, to the point that now I think I must have over 100 of the little fuckers. “I’ve wanted to do something with them for a long time, because I still really like a lot of them so I thought by doing this EP and giving it away for free to ticket buyers it kind of satisfied that urge, encouraged people to buy tickets and also hopefully served as a small token of my gratitude to the people who have been supporting me for a long time and might enjoy hearing what I sound like when I’m recording myself at home.” In his 20 years performing solo and with Jebediah, he’s ventured across many stretches of the great southern land, but there’s still venues to discover, and new places to discover. “Every time I do a tour of this nature I’m always looking forward to the places or gigs that I haven’t done before because, with all modesty aside, I have been touring for over 20 years and after that amount of time you tend to get to know places pretty well. On this tour I’m looking forward to going to Castlemaine as I’ve never even visited before and also Baha in Rye because I love Mexican food and am mildly jealous every time I see one of my fellow
Having toured alongside good friend Josh Pyke in late 2016, Evans is well and truly warmed up for an extensive three-month tour across Australia, and ready to settle in to the solo-performance mindset. “The band shows and the tour I did with Josh were both very structured shows and they had to be that way in order to work but playing on my own I have the freedom to do whatever I damn well like whenever the mood may take me and I won’t be blindsiding anyone. The whole thing rests on me, which is a good thing to do from time to time. “I’m going to try and play a few songs people may not have heard me do live before, and maybe dig up some cover songs that I’ve performed over the years but maybe haven’t played live for a while. Of course I’ll take requests and screw them up because that’s how I roll.” The tour offers an exciting chance for fans to connect with the work Evans has done behind the scenes in this time, with ticket buyers getting their hands on a special six track EP of unreleased music from the ARIA winning artist. “For ages I’ve been watching my hard drive fill up with unreleased demos. Every year the list gets
singer/songwriters playing a show there.” As he gears up for the massive tour he reflects on his earlier days. With the Bob Evans tour, and a Jebediah tour with Midnight Oil in October, 2017 is a far cry from his first solo gig, back in 1997 before he went by a pseudonym, a night he remembers fondly. “I wasn’t even expecting to play that night. I was at the Punters Club in Melbourne, R.I.P, to watch Something For Kate. As fate would have it, their support act for that evening were in some kind of car accident, nothing serious, but they weren’t able to get to the gig in time. Either Paul or Clint or both of them, I can’t really remember that detail, asked me if I would like to play some songs for some free beer. “I didn’t need much encouragement. I sat down on a chair and played Paul’s electric guitar through a little amp and I think I played some Jebediah songs without any distortion. It was probably pretty average but hey, that was the kind of crazy crap that happened in the ‘90s.”
Bob Evans will perform at Baha, Rye on Thursday June 1, The Croxton on Friday June 2, Workers Club, Geelong on Saturday June 3 and Bridget Hotel, Castlemaine on Friday June 9.
