THE BIGGEST IN INTERNATIONAL & NATIONAL NEWS PIKNIC ELECTRONIK ANNOUNCES NEW YEAR’S DATES FOR 2017
MELBOURNE MUSIC WEEK ANNOUNCES 2016 HUB AND HEADLINERS Melbourne Music Week for 2016 is almost here, and to keep us satisfied ahead of the full lineup announcement they’ve dropped a couple of teasers. MMW has announced the State Library of Victoria will serve as the event’s hub, converting the renowned and prestigious location into a celebration of live music. Victoria’s most photographed ceiling, the domed La Trobe Reading Room, will host performances and events, and each day of MMW from 10am-10pm, the State Library’s famous forecourt will host free all ages performances, DJ sets and fresh food offerings. On top of all this, MMW has also dropped details of their Opening Night – a smashing all female lineup at Queen’s Hall on Friday November 11. Her Sound, Her Story: A Celebration of Women in Music, will showcase performances from Julia Stone, Ella Hooper, Mama Kin, Montaigne, Mojo Juju, Ecca Vandal, Elizabeth Rose, Airling and Nyne. The Drones will also be getting in on the action, with a super special performance at Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday November 13. On the same day, the MCG will be transformed into a mini-festival, with ‘LOVE LIVE MUSIC at the ’G’, which will include performances in off-limits locations like the player change rooms, the new Robert Flower Terrace and the edge of the turf itself. A mix of Melbourne musicians playing everything from smooth jazz to upbeat pop will set the scene, before main stage performances from local legends The Delta Riggs and Pierce Brothers. The full nine day program for MMW will be announced on Tuesday October 4, but you can snap up your tickets to Her Sound, Her Story: A Celebration of Women in Music and The Drones via the MMW website. ‘LOVE LIVE MUSIC at the ’G’ tickets are available via the MCG website.
Lauded beat purveyors Piknic Electronik has announced their imminent return, kicking things off from January 1. The next instalment of the series will officially run from Sunday January 1 – Saturday March 18, 2017. While the artists are being kept a tight secret, with the previous instalment’s lineup featuring the likes of Dubfire, The Hacker, Kode9, Ed Banger House Party (Busy P and Boston Bun), K.I.M (The Presets), Sammy Dee, Rampue, Secret Cinema and Oliver Schories, our bet is that next year will prove to be nothing but a banger. Stay tuned to Beat for when the first announcement of artists drops.
Steve Poltz came to Australia for a festival run earlier this year which included Nannup, Port Fairy and the National Folk Festival. Now he’s back to showcase a string of new releases. Steve Poltz comes to the Sooki Lounge on Thursday December 8, the Spotted Mallard on Friday December 9, the Caravan Club on Saturday December 10 and the Memo Music Hall on Sunday December 11.

Gig Of The Week AN EVENING WITH HENRY ROLLINS We should probably ditch Turnbull and make a way better silver fox our Prime Minister – the man, the myth, and the legend that is Henry Rollins. Firstly he appreciates the arts, given his ties with monolithic punk outfit Black Flag. Plus in those DIY days you had to be damn thrifty, which is an admirable trait. He reckons we’ve dropped the ball on the whole gay marriage thing, so he’d sort that out quick smart. He’s a writer, public speaker, activist and actor, having starred in some ripper B-grade horror movies – where he basically just plays himself, which is awesome. He’s synonymous with brutal honesty and always has a convincing response for anything you throw at him. Though seeing as we can’t officially vote for Rollins, or any one politician in particular, the next best thing is seeing him at The Arts Centre on Monday September 19 and Tuesday September 20.

Henry Rollins ON THE RECORD BY JOSEPH EARP
Henry Rollins is a dangerous man. Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, the punk rock icon has systematically set his sights on a thousand different forms of authority, all the while resisting the conformist pull of the very industry he manages to make a living from. There are a lot of socalled rebels out there who look like children’s show hosts next to Rollins, and most of his contemporaries are either babbling their lives away in drug funks or starring in ads for car insurance. Or they’re dead. And yet despite his reputation, in conversation Rollins speaks gently, with surprising good grace. He might have a reputation as a warrior – as an old school anarchist, a Hunter S. Thompson type with all the subtlety and manners of a bull terrier – but more than anything Rollins is eager to talk about his loves. Or, perhaps, ‘love’, singular, given music seems to be the obsession that drives everything the man does. Rollins is even a connoisseur when it comes to smaller-scale Australian bands, and namedrops acts as diverse as Hierophants and Straight Arrows. “There’s so much good stuff in Australia you almost wonder if there’s something in the water,” he says. “When you see all these bands from Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne, Geelong, there are so many great ones. “I’ve always found Australia to be interesting in that – don’t take this the wrong way – you’re kind of nowhere in the world,” he says. “You’re not Europe. You’re not near America. You’re kind of blessed in that you’re not tied to all these countries. In your own way, you’re kind of left to your own devices. There’s a lot of purity and originality that can be derived from that relative isolation. I’ve always thought you are left alone enough that true talent can grow without getting stepped on, redirected or somewhat corrupted.” BEAT MAGAZINE PAGE 18
Rollins’ patronage of the Aussie scene doesn’t just extend to simply buying albums or mentioning bands in interviews – he finds the opportunity to spruik acts from Down Under whenever he can, writing articles for LA Weekly about our record stores and filling his radio show with tunes from artists like Summer Flake. His piece on Sydney’s own Red Eye Records wasn’t just an account of a store – it was a devotional, a paean to the endless possibilities of vinyl. “In Australia, not living there, I can’t keep the closest track on what’s going on,” he says. “Between trips to Australia, a lot goes on musically. And I miss things, even though I pay attention. And I do pay attention.” As far as Rollins is concerned, the vibrant Australian scene represents a nice change when compared to America’s more claustrophobic community. “In America everyone’s in a band, and everyone’s trying to play the Super Bowl Half Time proceedings. You hear these bands, you’re like, ‘Are you kidding? You think someone can’t tell your record collection?’ They’re so derivative it’s painful. You feel sorry for them.” The one time Black Flag frontman’s pity is a terrifying thing. He resists the idea that contemporary American bands might be ‘paying homage’ to nostalgic acts; he barks out a laugh when the word B E AT.C O M . A U
is mentioned. “I don’t even think it’s that conscious. I think they don’t listen to that much music and all of a sudden they want to be in a band. And so they go from what they know – but what they know is not much. MTV doesn’t even play music videos anymore.” He considers – softens. “This is in more the mainstream,” he says. “The mainstream has never done much for me. I find as time goes on, you really don’t need to leave the independent world of music. It is quite alive and quite well and churning out amazing music, while the mainstream is just deadened. You feel bad for them, all these fans who like all this mediocre stuff, because you can’t throw a Ty Segall record at them and have them go, ‘Wow, thanks.’ They’ll go ‘It doesn’t sound like -insert platinum selling album artist here-.’ “Well, I don’t feel that bad for them. They’re adults, they can make their own decisions. I just think the mainstream crawled away and died and is still producing sound. It’s still emitting content. Whereas the alternative world is really exciting. “Every once in a while someone will write me and say ‘Music sucks now’ and I’m like, ‘Not at my house man.’ I can’t keep up. There’s so many good records to listen to you’ve got to stay up late and get up early to keep up with them. It’s a great problem to have.” A great problem, and a problem that Rollins tackles the same way he has chosen to combat so many other obstacles in his life: systematically, with an awe-inspiring mix of dedication, perspiration and sheer unbridled effort. Henry Rollins doesn’t just listen to music – he listens to music. “There’s protein listening and carbohydrate listening,” he says. “Protein is when you’re burning. You’re finding new bands, you’re trying to push yourself. You’re listening to bands [where] you know it’s good, but it’s tough. You have to drag yourself up to it. You put in the time. And on weekends or long plane rides, I go for the carbohydrate listens. Carbohydrate listening is basically the
music I’m familiar with. Comfort food for the ears. So I do five or six days a week protein and about four hours a week carbohydrate.” For Rollins, the Internet has been singularly useful in his quest for new protein listens to devour. He’s not a luddite, and he’s a proud patron of websites like Bandcamp and the endless pleasures provided by Youtube’s suggested videos bar. “The Internet has been a great tool for listening to music,” he says. “If I can listen to your album for free, or listen to songs on your Bandcamp page, [then] if I like what you’re doing, I’ll buy your record. And [I like] the fact that I can listen to it first, so I don’t have to gamble – you’ve not penalised me 99 cents for a download just for me to hear I don’t like your music.” Ultimately, nothing about the man is casual. Nothing is half-arsed or perfunctory. To hear Rollins talk about buying records and listening to music is to hear a man talking about his very life’s work. “I’m very careful with my money, cause it came to me very hard,” he says. “I never had an inheritance. I went out and earned my money. So I’m not interested in buying drugs or fancy food. I want something I can use next week, next month, next decade. “You take care of your records, you’ll be able to play those records as long as you’re living,” he says, and there’s no mistaking his tone. It’s the same one he used some thirty-five years ago, back when he first barked out the chorus hiding in Rise Above like a snake in the undergrowth. A tone of sheer, terrifying conviction. “When everything else falls apart in my world, it’s just too bad I can’t eat vinyl,” he says. “I have enough of it here. I think it’s the one thing in my life I got right.” HENRY ROLLINS will bring his An Evening With… talking tour to Arts Centre Melbourne on Monday September 19 and Tuesday September 20.

This Week: For his cinematic debut, Louis Theroux, director John Dower and two-time Academy Awardwinning producer, Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire) venture inside the famously mysterious Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the famed ‘Hollywood’ religion, and a lot of experience dealing with eccentric human behaviour, the incomparable British broadcaster Louis Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology’s Los Angeles headquarters is denied. Catch Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie screen at ACMI throughout the week and up until Saturday October 1.

Revenge of the Gweilo BY JAcOB cOLLIVER
It’s your last week to catch Degas: A New Vision over at the NGV. The exhibition features more than 200 works from the master French impressionist, resulting in the most diverse and panoptic retrospective of Edgar Degas in decades. Among the selected works is a curation of Degas’ lesser known efforts in drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography ± allowing a comprehensive insight into the artist’s history and creative practice. The major retrospective is grouped thematically, bringing together the subject matter that Degas devoted himself to, including his iconic ballet portraiture as well as emotive portrayals of Parisian nightlife and the everyday gestures of 19th century women. Catch it up until Sunday September 18. Something surprising has been happening in screenwriting courses around the world. Though they remain popular as ever, very few students are writing traditional screenplays. Instead, they’re writing for web, for interactives ± and very often, for video games. Let the Games Begin: Storytelling Extended explores exactly this, diving head first into modern storytelling and powerful narrative for games. The expectation for most modern games is that the narrative will be appropriately complex; in some cases, they’re backed up by literally thousands of pages of lore. In this Wheeler Centre talk, audiences will look at the ways writers can seize on the creative and collaborative potential of games. Can great games rival great works of literature? All will be answered on Wednesday September 14 at The Wheeler Centre.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Melbourne Fringe Festival kicks off this week with its biggest program to date. Seriously, it’s bloody huge. Acting as the festival’s immersive and stunning centrepiece comes the most ambitious Keynote Project in Melbourne Fringe’s storied history - Sky Light from renowned artist Robin Fox. Elsewhere, Fringe Furniture celebrates a milestone, the Festival Club gets rowdy, Bellbird offers entertainment for the thinking children of Melbourne, while over 400 shows will take over venues throughout the city. Get out there and step into the weird. Melbourne Fringe runs from Thursday September 15 - Sunday October 2.

elbourne-based director, writer and actor Nathan Hill is no stranger to the power of cinema. His works encapsulate the pure thrill, shock and excitement of independent genre-filmmaking, and his latest sensation Revenge of the Gweilo has the honour of closing this year’s Melbourne Underground Film Festival. "I don't write a film that looks like a sci-fi blockbuster on paper that I'll actually never be able to shoot," Hill explains. "If anything, I kind of under-write. I let these things unfold, so when you're on set and you're trying to make this film and you're not sure how it's going to end up, you're pleasantly surprised. You can do martial arts. You can smash people over the head with candied glass bottles. You can go into the Chinese New Year Festival." Revenge of the Gweilo tells an epic tale of actionpacked retribution about a retired cop (played by Hill, who has actually studied a whopping seven different styles of martial arts). Hill goes "back to school" to rekindle the flame he once had for martial arts and defeat a sinister Triad gang, in order to avenge the death of the woman he loved. A dark adventure Hill likens thematically to revenge movies like Rolling Thunder, the film boasts an impressive array of fight scenes and location shoots, including an opening shot at the actual Chinese New Year Festival procession in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown. "This is one of the brilliant things about Melbourne: you can shoot frigging anywhere," Hill says, gleefully. "You can't do that in every city. I'm casting director on Cult Girls at the moment, with Mark Bakaitis [directing]. He is shooting in forests, he's shooting in mines, in underground caves ± he's just all over the place. Again, it's another solidification for me that this city is ridiculous. There is so much you can do, if you've got the imagination. It's all there. It's all accessible. You just need the passion." Hill asserts that he's "not afraid to mimic his
heroes". Growing up with candid directorial delights like Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon and Sylvester Stallone's Rambo, Hill recognises the importance of understanding your creative strengths. "The films that I love just happen to be acted in and directed by the same guy," Hill explains. "I think that they're the films that have the most effect on me, probably because when someone does that, they're really serious about their vision. They're almost like, 'I'm not putting this in someone else's hands to fuck it up'. If I was a seven-foot tall giant, hairy and fat, completely unattractive and the role was not suited to me, I wouldn't cast myself. I'm only putting myself in those situations if I think I can pull it off. I'm being realistic. I'm not caving to my own ego and bullshit, and just putting myself in my own film because I think I can. It's still got to work." Revenge of the Gweilo won't be the only appearance by Hill at MUFF. He'll also be making a cameo in fellow director Daniel Armstrong's sci-fi actioncomedy SheBorg Massacre. With his dedication to DIY filmmaking in all forms, Hill belongs to a group of talented genre-filmmakers that MUFFfounder Richard Wolstencroft refers to as "the new vanguard". Much like Wolstencroft, Hill laments the difficulty and compromise involved in securing arts funding for independent directors, but with the recent rise of devoted auteurs, he confirms that high-concept features aren't leaving any time soon. "With the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, what it's doing is actually validating filmmakers that
EVERYTHING MELBOURNE
haven't necessarily been given funding or won an AFI," Hill states. "But they're good, and what they're doing is sociologically involved. I'm talking to you today because I'm promoting my movie; because I want the public to know about it. If I didn't want the public to know about it, and I was scared of the public and I was scared of my own voice, then it wouldn't work. "When I first entered [MUFF] with my film Tomboys in 2010, Richard actually rejected it," Hill laughs. "I fired up. I said, 'Seriously, how the fuck can you let in movies like Razor Eaters and The Magician, and you won't take Tomboys? Just - fuckin' nah.' He loved that so much, because it reminded him of why he started MUFF, which is that he couldn't get into MIFF [Melbourne International Film Festival]. Me firing up actually got me in it. It got me respect. Then, when I entered Model Behaviour in 2014, I won Best Film Runner-Up. Now, with 2016's Revenge of the Gweilo, I'm really hoping to take the trophy." Like Quentin Tarantino before him, Hill was a selfproclaimed "video store guy" before breaking into the film world with his 2004 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde adaptation, The Strange Game of Hyde and Seek. Since then, his work has collected accolades at the likes of Los Angeles' Shriekfest, Australian Film Festival, California Film Awards, and the UK's Shadowstar Film Festival ± and he's only getting more passionate about his craft. "A lot of filmmakers are in it for the wrong reason," Hill says. "They're in it because they want to make money, or because they want a trophy. They're not actually thinking about the work, and clearly, I'm thinking about the work, because I'm still going. This is the seventh feature I've directed in 10 or 15 years. It's serious. It's a lifestyle, not a hobby. It's something I'm doing for life. That's the difference." REVENGE OF THE GWEILO will close the Melbourne Underground Film Festival on Saturday September 17 at the Alex Theatre. Tickets through www.muff.com.au.

A Huge Banksy Exhibition Is Coming To Melbourne More than 80 works will be on display in the comprehensive retrospective, presenting the largest collection of Banksy artwork to ever draw upon Australia, including the iconic Girl with Balloon, Flag Wall and Laugh Now pieces. Curated by Steve Lazarides, former manager of Banksy, the works come from his own collection and other private collectors. Inspired by the streets of London, the exhibition will take visitors on an artistic adventure, exploring the mind of Banksy and his satirical street art. Famous for his graffiti technique, Banksy’s artwork combines dark humour with underlying political messages and social themes, which has now seen him become one of the biggest contemporary studio artists of recent times. “This exhibition is a one off, never will you be able to see this amount of work in one place again,” said Lazarides. “Once the show is over, the artwork will dissipate back to the other 40 collectors around the world, and the likelihood of them being brought together again in the future is very slim.” The exhibition will run from Friday October 7 at The Paddock, Federation Square to Sunday January 22, 2017. Tickets through Ticketek.

She’ll be discussing it with writer and musician Sian Prior, as they focus on the lines connecting song to story. Catch it Thursday October 6 at the Wheeler Centre. It’s a free event, but bookings are essential.

Expansive Indigenous Program Set For Melbourne Festival 2016 Melbourne Festival’s 2016 instalment is set to be its best yet and to complement it, a first-class lineup of Indigenous artists and cultural projects have been announced for the 17-day program. Kicking the festival off, Tanderrum will take place in Federation Square. The traditional ceremony sees the meeting of five clans of the Kulin Nation: Wurundjeri, Boon Wurrung, Taungurung, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung and an invitation to join them on this land. Esteemed Australian writer and chronicler, Clinton Walker, will have his ground-breaking book, film and album Buried Country brought to life by an extensive cast of local singers and songwriters. Elsewhere, Collisions sees a unforgettable experience endured by Aboriginal elder Nyarri Morgan encapsulated in a powerful cinematic showcase while Indigenous Australian Sarah-Jane Norman joins Algerian-French choreographer Nacera Belaza for an incisive duet, questioning the boundaries of body and place. Melbourne Festival 2016 will take over Melbourne’s streets, galleries and theatres from Thursday October 6 -Sunday October 23.

Four people have a night they will never forget as two strangers are thrown together through one shocking event. It all comes together with a return to Holloway’s “choral style” theatre, which earned him six Greenroom Award nominations for Red Sky Morning, developed and produced at Red Stitch in 2008. It’ll run at Red Stitch Actors Theatre from Tuesday October 11 - Saturday November 5.

O f f Th e Record Well, there you have it. London have gone and taken a page out of Mike Baird’s book and shut down one of the greatest clubs in the world, fabric. There’s been a huge outpouring of grief from the global electronic music community, but perhaps it was best put by drum and bass royalty Goldie: “I’m wondering whether or not the likes of me, the likes of Jazzie B, Norman Jay, Pete Tong for that matter, should just trade our MBEs in, melt them down and put them in a pencil-pushers coffee, so it can taste a little bit sweeter for him today, so he feels more successful in killing counter culture and culture itself.” Massive fucking sigh over here. All too familiar. The Lord Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has now invited Four Tet to City Hall to discuss fabric’s closure – it will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes from it. You’ve got once chance left to see arguably the only good thing to come from Newcastle, Mall Grab, before he moves overseas to the UK. Side note: I’ve been told that Newcastle once demolished a heritage-listed building to construct the largest KFC in the southern hemisphere, can someone confirm this for me? Anyway, back on track. The producer, who only entered the game a year ago, has already released eight 12”s and even launched his own label titled Steel City Dance Discs. Kid moves fast. Catch him on Sunday September 18 at Ferdydurke. See him before he’s playing headline shows all over Europe at some of the biggest clubs in the world like fabr… oh. One of the biggest names in UK garage, DJ EZ, is coming our way. A true veteran, the don has held down a weekly radio show for London’s KISS FM for 15 years, and most recently has shown no signs of slowing down with gigs for Boiler Room, Mixmag and Coachella. Furthermore, earlier this year he raised over 80,000 clams for cancer research in the UK by DJing for 24 fucking hours straight. Legend. Catch him on Saturday November 12 at Platform One. Some news for the producers and gearheads out there: Roland have announced the release of three new products in their Boutique line: the TB-03, TR-09 and VP-03. They’ve also teamed up with Serato and announced the DJ-808, which adds 808 drum machine, synth connectivity to the DJ controller in an aim to bring “production, live performance and DJing even closer.” Native Instruments are releasing the Maschine Jam performance instrument (piano role mode, anyone?), while Pioneer are bringing out a new two-channel mixer dubbed the DJM-450, with an in-built soundcard and USB input for integration with laptop setups. Tour rumours: some bloody serious techno is coming our way with the one and only Ben Klock. Announcement imminent. A return of Radio Slave is also on the cards – not to confused with the god-awful Audioslave. Best releases this week: Kornél Kovács’ new album The

Guantanamo Baywatch are an American band. That might seem like a broad term, but given their current geographical circumstances it has to be. The band’s current lineup is comprised of four members – vocalist/ guitarist Jason Powell, bassist Chevelle Wiseman, drummer Chris Scott and guitarist Jordan Owens; who was recruited as a touring member last year – and they’re currently spread across three very different parts of the land of the free. “Chevelle still lives in Portland, Chris is moving to Los Angeles and Jordan and I both live near Phoenix,” says Powell. “To get from Portland to Phoenix is a two or three day drive, so it makes it all really hard to properly practice. Sometimes, when we’re playing shows, that’s the only time we actually see one another. We’ve taken to flying out to our dates a day early so we at least have a chance to go over what we’re going to play. It’s not easy – we’re all in our own world – but there are times where we just rock up and go for it; and sometimes it’s more fun that way. Obviously, I don’t get to see the rest of them as much as I used to, so it’s nice to all fly to the same place.” May last year saw the release of Darling... It’s Too Late, the band’s second studio album. Since then, the band have hit the road extensively, both taking the van across their native land and flying out to select headlining dates. A constant companion in their touring of late has been The Gooch Palms, the Novocastrian garage rock duo that relocated to Los Angeles in 2015. “We found out about those guys when we last came to Australia,” says Powell. “It’s funny – we came all the way to Australia, and they were over in L.A. at that point. All the people we were meeting in Australia were telling us that we needed to hook up with these guys – I mean, they were in our part of the world; it only made sense. When we got back, we ended up being on the same bill for a couple of shows. We immediately became friends – they’re super cool – and we asked them to come out on tour with us. I think that our two bands are a really good match. We’re not exactly the same musically, but we’re close enough that it makes sense. We’re both fun rock ’n’ roll bands, and when we get together we play fun rock ‘n’ roll shows – it’s pretty simple.” With touring in full swing since the release of Darling... It’s Too Late, it would’ve been understandable if the band were primarily focused on simply touring that record until the cycle ran its course. Instead the band made plans to strike while the iron is hot, BEAT MAGAZINE PAGE 24
and Powell’s already hard at work on what will be album number three. “I’m actually working on new material right now,” he says. “I’ve been at it for most of this year – I’ve been writing and recording demos, and hopefully we’ll be recording properly once we get back from Australia. We were just talking today, trying to figure out how we’re going to do it – we have to get together and learn the new songs and we want to play them live. We’re trying to work out where we want to record, so it’s all still coming together. It’s probably too early to say what it’s going to be like, but I’m already feeling really good about it. I think it’s going to be a cool album – I’m definitely sensing it’s going to be quite different from our other albums.” This September will see the band return to Australia for a run of headlining dates, as well as an appearance at Sound of The Suburbs in Cronulla where they’ll share the stage with the likes of DZ Deathrays, Alex Lahey and Big White. Given the overwhelmingly positive experience of their last tour, Powell and co are itching to return. “Originally, we were hit up through Facebook to see if we might be keen. It was a no-brainer for us – we were like ‘of course.’ The thing is, we’ve always gotten messages from randoms wanting us to play in weird cities. We go along with it, but then realise it’s not happening. That’s what we thought was going to happen with Australia,” says Powell. “Then the flight tickets came and before you knew it, we were in Australia. It was such a trip. The guys bringing us out ended up being super rad, and all the shows that we played were with such stoked audiences. They’re definitely the kind of crowds that I’d feel excited to share new songs with, so I hope we have some stuff ready for when we’re over there.” Guantanamo Baywatch will play Yah Yah’s on Friday September 30 with Mesa Cosa, as well as Chopped Festival, Newstead running from Friday September 30 until Sunday October 2.
Her latest single Doomsday Clock, the second track to be lifted from Bitchcraft following June’s Are We Flirting?, was already generating buzz in its first week in the world. If that wasn’t enough, she’s just wrapped up a national tour alongside Midnight Oil frontman and former Labor politician Peter Garrett, with whom she performed as both an opening act and as a guitarist in his backing band. “He’s such an intelligent and insightful man, and an incredibly talented artist,” says May. “I really enjoyed having conversations with him about various subjects, including political issues. We share a very similar corner of the political spectrum, so I found his words very informative. As a musician, I learnt so much. Opening for anyone isn’t an easy job – people are there to see the main act, so it can be really daunting. I found Peter’s audiences to be really open minded. A lot of my new music has a dialogue about certain political issues, including sexuality as a woman being a political statement of sorts. I really enjoyed speaking to members of the audience about these topics – I feel like they understood what I was trying to say.” Bitchcraft arrives three-and-a-half years after the release of her last LP, Kiss My Apocalypse. After all but abandoning her garage rock roots, May is now freely in the midst of melding together genres away from the immediate comfort zone of the guitar, which is an exciting prospect for an artist that’s been in a constant state of evolution since starting out in music at the ripe age of 17. “It’s basically a record of
gospel, soul and hip hop,” May says. “I grew up listening to soul music, and my brother and I had a great love for hip hop in the ‘90s. We still love listening to it these days – there’s a lot of great artists right now in that realm. Mostly, what I’m inspired by from hip hop is the use of beats – my producer Matt has been working on these new songs with me with that style in mind, particularly when it comes to the percussion, the kick drum and the snare. I also have a group of girlfriends over here in Perth who I sing ‘90s R&B

Throw yourself into anything for long enough and you’re always at risk of the fun draining out a little. After all, anything you work at is you know, work, and even a passion can become pressure if you allow it to fester. Such was the position that Warpaint found themselves in after the release of their critically and commercially acclaimed selftitled record. The release came with its own set of challenges, and its distinctly more radio-ready sound turned the band into indie rock stars they were perhaps not yet ready to be. So how do you fight the implications of your own success? According to bassist and vocalist Jenny Lee Lindberg, you hit reset. “When making this new record, I think everyone came back to the table with more of an open mind and the ability to let things flow freely and to give things time,” Lindberg says. “You’re trying not to intercept it. You’re just happy to sit on it for a bit, and hear what everyone else is hearing. Also, I think we all decided that we had to B E AT.C O M . A U
pick our battles. It was about deciding on the things that you wanted to fight for.” The result is Heads Up, a distinctly more upbeat record than Warpaint. A track like New Song is the closest the band’s ever come to disco halls, a choice that Lindberg stresses was very deliberate. “I think the main thing we wanted to do was just make an upbeat album and bring some of the energy that we have in our live show to it,” she says. The record was produced by Jacob Bercovici, a name that’ll be familiar to any diehard Warpaint fans. After all, the industry veteran worked on the group’s very first EP, Exquisite Corpse, and getting Bercovici onboard was a deliberate – though not exactly straightforward – way of making the record-making process as
songs with in gospel a cappella style. They ended up singing with me on Doomsday Clock. I’ve been singing like this for quite awhile in my own time for fun – it’s natural that it’s made its way into my music.” May and her band are heading out on tour this November in support of Doomsday Clock, her brother KT Rumble joining her on the road, the pair originally performing together in May’s first band The Fuzz back in the early 2000s. “We’ve been playing music together for about 20 years,” says May. “He’s on bass for this tour, which is an interesting position for him considering he’s been a guitarist for pretty much his whole life. He’s settled into the role really well and gotten himself a nice little Fender Precision. I’ve also got Chris Wright, who is the brother of the drummer from Methyl Ethyl. He’s an incredibly creative guy – he’s also a painter – and he’s really chilled and easy to tour with. I’ve got a great band together – I’m even bringing along my gospel singers when I can.” ABBE MAY will perform at Queenscliff Music Festival, held in Queenscliff, from Friday November 25 through till Sunday November 27. Tickets and full lineup available now via www.qmf.net.au.
smooth as possible. “We’ve worked with him over the years on various things,” Lindberg says. “But in the beginning we wanted to produce the record ourselves. We were torn. I was in favour of producing the record by ourselves, and so were the girls, but we thought about it and eventually we said, ‘You know what? Let’s just see if Jake’s available. He’s been there since the beginning, he knows us. It’d be really nice to work with him again.’ And he was super down, so that’s the way it happened. It was organic.” ‘Ourselves’ being the operative word. Warpaint aren’t a one-person band, and they have no strict frontperson. They’re a collective, an assemblage of musicians and songwriters who each have something different to bring to the table. Lindberg, for example, released her debut studio record Right On! late last year, and to hear her tell it, it sounds like the experience of going at it alone taught her what makes Warpaint’s collaborative writing process so unique. “I’m the only person writing the music on Right On!,” she says. “There was only one perspective on that record. And I think that’s what’s a bit different about Warpaint. That’s what makes us unique, and what makes our sound pretty unusual. It’s hard to pinpoint what we sound like, because we’re four different people. Whereas Right On! sounds very much like me. If we were to make a Warpaint album with the Right On! songs they would probably sound totally different” The record is one that brims with plain, old-fashioned goodness, and produces the kind of pleasure that you get when you hear an exceptionally tight band having fun. Whatever the ultimate response may be, at this stage, Lindberg understands that it’s out of her hands. “I am excited,” Lindberg says. “I’m excited for it to come out, and then once it’s out, it’s none of my business what happens to it.” WARPAINT will release Heads Up on Friday September 23 through Rough Trade/Remote Control.

Jamie Treays is at home, catching up on some hardearned rest after a day spent rehearsing songs off his fourth album, Trick. The record comes a mere two years after his ‘comeback’ LP Carry On The Grudge, an album that arrived after a five-year break that challenged Treays’ confidence but ultimately transformed him into a more confident, mature songwriter. “Trick is more to do with being back on the road a bit,” he explains. “Having played a lot of live shows, this album comes from wanting to have the right kind of music to do so. Carry On The Grudge was quite down-tempo. I wanted to counter that. “It’s a strange point in my career where I’m thinking about the past while moving myself forward,” he says. “I had a lot of fun writing the record and I feel like that comes across on a lot of the tracks.” Though the response to Carry On was positive, the record heralded a clear departure from Treays’ earlier work. Trick is a celebration of Treays’ roots, full of nods to the debut album that made him famous. It was even partially recorded in his old stomping grounds of the now-closed Moloko Studios in Hoxton Square. Of course, the studio’s demise represents a neat real-world mirror for Treays closing one chapter and embarking upon another. “It was nice to go back to Moloko Studios one last time,” he says. “It’s always good to touch base with the old sound.” Aside from Moloko, Treays also embarked upon a pilgrimage to Detroit, recording songs from Trick in a number of studios in the States. “I’ve seen Detroit explored on a few documentaries and some friends have been,” he says. “People are moving there because it’s so cheap, which is giving rise to lots of art and music. I was keen to record somewhere else and I’m glad we did. Visually it’s a really interesting place. “Whenever I go away it tends to make me more aware of where I’m from. In a way Detroit could’ve been anywhere. I’m glad we went, because it gave me the opportunity to connect to the English aspect of the music.” Though it doesn’t necessarily stick to the guidelines of genre, Trick does touch on reggae and hip hop influences, traversing through a range of styles while unpacking evocative images of lost souls, exile, deserted cities and changing times. Solomon Eagle is particularly notable, full of grimey rapping and RZA-inspired production, telling the story of a real life seventeenth century Quaker called Solomon Eccles. “That’s him on the front cover of the album as well,” Treays says. “He’s a legendary character. He’d walk around almost naked in London berating people during the Black Death, shouting that this was happening because they were living in a den of inequity. “I’ve always been a big fan of RZA and his production,” Treays says. “The beat led me down that route. I’m nowhere near as good as RZA, mind you. I love his heavy bassline beats and I was trying to capture a little bit of that.” As his love of American rappers proves, despite the uniquely English resolve of Treays’ music, his lyrics are not tied to any one particular country, and he aims to be relatable on a global scale. Sign Of The Times, one of Trick’s more unashamedly emotional songs, contains the line, “Where did all the venues go? Lost them all to businessmen.” It’s a line that will resonate heavily with Sydneysiders and is an issue that proves contentious for Treays. “It’s a huge issue in London,” he says. “All the venues have been replaced with flats which is such a shame because you feel like the city you live in is just being gutted. The culture that makes the city good is ignored and it’s becoming harder to go and see a good live show these days because venues aren’t considered very important to a lot of people. “Music survives. People want to see live music,” he says. “What is sad is the loss of the communities that exist in these venues. They get pushed under the bus because someone wants to build a new fucking tower block. It sucks. I’m the eternal optimist but it makes me grumpy.” Though Treays has every right to be annoyed, annual festivals like Falls offer such beefy lineups that it’s hard to be totally despondent about the access to live music we have in this country. Treays first played Falls in 2009 and is excited to return again. “2009 was the first time we’d played outdoors and the way the sound travels is super fun,” he says. “The crowd is always down for it. Actually Australian audiences remind me a lot of Scottish crowds ± they’re super positive and always up to have a seriously good time. “As a musician you delight in going places where you get a feeling the party has already started when you turn up. Sometimes you feel like you’re the only one trying to get it started. Australia feels like it’s a party that’s begun without us and we’ve been lucky enough to get pulled in for the ride.” JAMIE T will play Falls Festival, Byron Bay, running from Wednesday December 28 until Tuesday January 3, and featuring Childish Gambino, Violent Soho, Catfish And The Bottlemen, and many more.Trick out now through EMI. Skeleton Tree is an un-album. It’s a record defined by loss, a chronicle of missing things, and its power derives as much from what it doesn’t contain as from what it does. Songs break and buckle under the weight of suggestion, and a host of known unknowns press down on the record with all the insistence of a brain tumour against the back of the eye. The record is dark of course – Jesus Alone scalds, and Anthrocene is all barely-repressed horror – but it’s not an all-out exercise in despair, and the piece is full of spit-soaked snatches of beauty. It hurts, but it’s not of hurt, and it has no desire to inflict it. Indeed, at times there are flourishes that could almost be described as kitsch, great swathes of pink paint against the canvas of black, and the female solo on Distant Sky
has a baroque beauty that transforms the track’s subtle tragedy into something else entirely. But, ultimately, reviews like this are pointless. They’re just words: sparks off a match compared to a bonfire. Skeleton Tree is one of the artistic achievements of the year, but it’s also much more than that; not a record but a trembling snatch of life, offered up, ready for you to take. By Joseph Earp

SINGLE REVIEWS WITH LACHlan I don’t ask much in this humble little column that hits the streets each week. But I’ll ask this: It would be great if you could all get behind the Western Bulldogs Football Club this Friday evening. Cheers, Lachlan.
GUY SEBASTIAN Candle (Sony) You know how sometimes a track has so many things it reminds you of that it kind of makes all reference points meaningless? Guy goes there with Candle. At times it sounds like Flume, at times My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy-era Yeezy, Yeezus-era Yeezy, Franky Ocean, and a bit of Hozier. And Hozier fucking sucks. But despite being a touch overcooked and contrived, Candle mostly works.
THE NATION BLUE Wild (Poison City) Sustaining a nebulous state of existence over the past few years as members pursue various other outfits, The Nation Blue have made their biggest comeback yet with the announcement of two new LPs and a headline national tour. Wild reeks of urgency, packing a shitload into its brief runtime. It’s an anthem of desperation. A bloody good one at that.

SIA FEAT. KENDRICK LAMAR The Greatest (Monkey Puzzle) Sia Furler has been on a bit of a nonstop roll since 2014’s 1000 Forms Of Fear, settling into her wig era with a knack for quality and quantity. Following on from this year’s This Is Acting, Sia releases the standalone cut The Greatest in tribute to the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack. It’s empowering pop, the yearning for greatness through adversity that Sia has effortlessly bottled over and over again.

LADY GAGA Perfect Illusion (Universal) The misfired Jeff Koons-artifice aesthetic of ARTPOP aside (though it did have its moments), Lady Gaga still stands as one of the greatest rockstars to emerge this side of Y2K. The collaborative covers album with Tony Bennett in 2014 provided the perfect palate cleanse after ARTPOP’s cul-de-sac of musical direction. And now Gaga emerges anew. There’s a fearlessness on Perfect Illusion, an unleashed freedom, buoyed by Kev Parker’s loose drum tones. It’s a wonderfully strange song, employing standard pop tropes while eschewing into an organic uncanny valley. Gaga backs herself, and while at first listen it might have some dissonance, its triumph resonates through overwhelming force. Gaga could be about to paint her masterpiece. BEAT MAGAZINE PAGE 62

DRAG IT DOWN ON YOU (Cooking Vinyl Australia)
ANY THING BUT WORDS (Warner Bros. Records)
THE SMALL HOURS (Acid Jazz)
Already onto album number two, Melbourne’s Ceres have impressed with Drag It Down On You. This is a ridiculously great album. It’s an instantly accessible record that feels complately fresh yet contains a certain level of nostalgia about it. 91, Your House is raw with emotion, the chorus of vocalist Tom Lanyon screaming “I’m a piece of shit” resonating with anyone who has ever doubted themselves. It’s a perfect song to listen to when you’re hungover and feeling super self critical. Laundry Echo is filled with catchy riffs and brings Frank Morda’s drums to the fore while further exposing the pleading nature of Lanyon’s vocal style. Spinning Wheel, which hopefully is named after the colourful wheel when your Mac freezes, is more of a stripped back affair showing that Ceres can write a beautiful song as well as be abrasive. The sexually charged Choke is a real album highlight. The guitar work is super impressive and while risking sounding like a broken record, this track again reinforces how good the vocals are. Lanyon isn’t afraid to show the flaws in his voice and push his limits, adding extreme emotion to each song. That emotion is dripping from Nothing On Your Shoulders, yet another highlight on this stellar album. Drag It Down On You should cement Ceres’ reputation as one of the most exciting bands in the Australian music scene. Particularly those who like their alternative rock with a raw emotional edge. The Banks & Steelz story began five years ago, when Paul Banks of Interpol fame and Wu Tang Clan’s head honcho RZA cut a demo together in between chess playing sessions. While the unlikely duo had never planned on releasing a full-length album, fate had different plans. Listeners may initially be tempted to compare Banks & Steelz to Gorillaz. Banks’ shoegaze-ish riffs and resigned indie rock vocal stylings sound at odds with RZA’s street smart demeanour at first, but as the album rolls on, the method in the madness becomes evident. The trick here is to pull out all stops and enjoy the album, without analysing its discrete constituents. On Anything But Words, Banks & Steelz seize the opportunity to experiment with fresh ideas while being careful not to become another rock/rap mashup cliche. To that end, RZA keeps things authentic with his raw flow, and doesn’t adjust his style much in order to fit with the album’s often experimental sound. Wielding their impressive respective talents, both as performers and producers, the duo have arrived at a great mix of sounds on this album. The Wild Season features aggressive emceeing fused with melancholic guitar and synth tunes, and guest vocals by Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) make this track’s unique sound all the more interesting. There’s also plenty of psychedelic grooves (Conceal) and subdued trip hop vibes (One by One). Sword in the Stone features old-school minimalist production and a few solid verses by rap legend Kool Keith. Ultimately, Banks & Steels have taken something that’s been done to death and recreated it in a refreshing way. That’s what makes this collaboration work and this album a solid debut.
Heavy Days was the first instalment of Jeff the Brotherhood’s spiritual trilogy, followed by We Are the Champions a couple after that. Five years later comes the concluding chapter, Zone. The album opens in ominous style: a thundering beat, a heavy slacker vocal like Pavement on a diet of Quaaludes. “I’m totally dead, I’m totally cool.” Everything’s just right, even if nothing’s happening. And then it breaks with the Sonic Youth-ish Energy, but it’s not quite in gear; the tempo drops off and we’re stuck in a field staring into the sky waiting for direction. The void’s filled with the meat-and-potatoes electro-spiked garage rocker Punishment, iced with the Meanied riffage of Juice and dumped on with the pissed off attitude of Idiot. The next step in the journey comes with Ox, a lost demo from some polluted, sharp filled waterway in a shitty Pacific north west town. Bad is equal parts cathartic and celebratory; Habit hangs off a simple, repeated riff, arguably the best melodic metaphor for narcotic obsession since The Velvet Underground’s Heroin. Toasted is intense in a Sabbath sort of way, and shit’s getting too heavy to ignore, but it’s walk in the park compared to the Ministry-like psychosis of You. Finally there’s Portugal, a mash-up of sparse strumming bruising licks and introspective musings about life on the road and its attendant psychological damage. If you’re ever going to hit the wall on tour, Portugal’s where shit’s going to get fucked up. Zone doesn’t give you all the answers to life’s questions, but it sure helps you see the light. No matter what you think about the current political situation in the U.S, the best thing about it is that it has reunited one of the greatest political rock groups in history in Rage Against the Machine, albeit under a different name with different front men. With Chuck D (Public Enemy) and B-Real (Cypress Hill) now holding the microphones, because seemingly nothing and no one can bring Zach De La Rocha back, The Party’s Over is a five-track EP designed to draw on the political angst people are feeling now, the same way they did in the ‘90s when these acts were at their peak. It features two recorded singles and three live cuts, mixing originals and reworks to form perhaps a taste of what’s to come. The first question that needs answering is of course, have Chuck D and B-Real done enough to replace De La Rocha? Chuck D is clearly the better of the two, coming from Public Enemy with political albums such as It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back and Fear Of A Black Planet, he was almost a readymade replacement. Chuck was able to take his trademark vocals to a different band and bring the same anger and outrage that made Public Enemy so great. B-Real is good, the effort is there, but with a naturally less aggressive voice, second fiddle was always going to be the spot, especially when Chuck D is so obviously at home here. Musically, the songs are as classic Rage Against The Machine as you could get. Powerful drums, thumping bass and unmistakable Tom Morello guitar riffs; any of these tracks could have been lifted from a past Rage album and it would be impossible to tell the difference. Hopefully this EP is a taste of things to come, on it’s own, two singles and three live tracks are not a whole lot to go off. In a perfect world, Prophets Of Rage release an earth shattering album of militant fury right before the U.S election but until then, its simply a teaser of what could be.

There’s a fine line between resilience and stubbornness. Resilience is about preservation in the face of adversity - the tireless refinement of your skill set to improve and resist decay. Stubbornness has no such dignity. It’s self-serving, hollow and ultimately futile. Braver Than We Are is the latter: a twisted mangle of formulaic misfires where Jim Stienman lazily reheats past glories and Meat Loaf tragically shreds his remaining legacy bashing them together. The snide scene-setter Who Needs The Young opens with an acidic hypocrisy, childishly snapping at those who accuse him of creative stagnation while simultaneously proving their point. In a complete backflip of his earlier stance that celebrated youthful rebellion, Loaf becomes the very pig-headed curmudgeon he fought without a lick of self-awareness. Artists age, but they also evolve, while retaining that fundamental fire (See: Johnny Cash). Loaf ’s vocal power has devolved into a trickling, passionless mockery. Both Stienman and Loaf have consistently delivered kooky theatrics with an infectious gusto for decades. This album, however, is bleakly sterile - an unjustifiable Frankenstienian monster of mythological tropes stitched into saccharine ballads. The unsustainably self indulgent Going All The Way Is Just The Start (A Song In 6 Movements) runs 11 minutes and 28 seconds, sporadically dipping into paper-thin representations of gothic thematics and power rock dramatics without dredging substance. Loaf trundles through the painfully flat Only When I Feel and Skull of Your Country apes Total Eclipse Of The Heart with an undigestablypatriotic belch. Stienman’s back-catalog covers add nothing; More’s industrial-esque guitar coughing fits are laughable and Loving You’s A Dirty Job (But Somebody’s Gotta Do It) force what sounds like toy keyboard presets and Kelly Clarkson into a disgustingly safe pop spew. Vacuous and directionless, Braver Than We Are is shamefully fearful. It’s an obstinate refusal to provide anything new that also fails to provide nostalgic comfort with its inferior, rehashed aesthetic. Unacceptable.

Oh boy, where to start with this pile of shit? If it wasn’t for Matt Berry, I wouldn’t have touched this record with one of his ten foot ‘Maypoles’ (his band). My assumption was that his music was going to be an extended joke of his acting work, laughs and side splitters aplenty. Unfortunately, you’ll quickly realise this isn’t a joke. Which begs the question, can a comedian do serious music? Berry is incredibly hilarious. His roles in The Mighty Boosh, IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, Snuff Box and Toast of London are A-grade comedy performances, underpinned by his uniquely boisterous deadpan demeanour. These shows are dusted with his musical stylings and they fit snugly into the context of their satirical environment. The Smalls Hours is not satirical comedy ± unless Berry’s so deep in the joke that he doesn’t know if he’s joking anymore, like a confused undercover cop. His psych/folk/jazz offal is something you might find in an Op Shop’s vinyl collection, next to a stack of Kamhal and Engelbert Humperdinck records. It lacks substance, feels outdated, but most of all, is just plain boring. It’s like elevator music had sex with hold music in a waiting room. Expectations can be a doozy. Even if you try to put all of your previous conceptions of Matt Berry out of your head, the record still doesn’t improve. Comedians can do serious work, but it needs to be good. In particular, when Matt Berry’s comedy is so firmly based in satire, if you want your music to be taken seriously, especially acid jazz, you better wear a mask. Then again, maybe he is joking, and the joke’s on me.

MELBOURNE’S MOST COMPREHENSIVE GIG GUIDE
BLOOM What inspired you to apply for Melbourne Music Bank? I was inspired to apply for Melbourne Music Bank because it’s a wonderful opportunity and if you’re successful it can be a foundation for your entire music career. What is your goal as a future musician? My goal as a future musician is to be able to create music that will be remembered: music that could be considered timeless. Who is your favourite music artist and why? At the moment, Nai Palm from Hiatus Kaiyote. Vocally, she’s unbelievable. I love how the band experiments with strange timing and how their music is about feeling. I also admire how they are a fusion of different styles, this makes them sound unique. What sort of themes do you want to explore in your music? When writing music I like to explore subjects that I can deeply relate to so that when I perform, it’s authentic and comes from the heart. What sort of impact are you hoping your music will make on listeners/other music artists in the world? I hope that my music impacts on listeners by conjuring up some sort of emotion and leaves them captivated, wanting to hear more. What do you love the most about making music? I love that music is subjective. The passion, feeling and emotion that I may put into a piece of music can be portrayed completely differently when listened to by another person. BLOOM is a finalist in Melbourne Music Bank 2016. Head to bankofmelbourne.com.au/ melbmusicbank/ to cast your vote.

JAMES FRANKLIN How do you feel Melbourne Music Bank will best benefit your goals? MMB puts you in contact with a great team of experts. Having these people around my work will help my music reach a larger audience. What do you love the most about making music? I love how people respond to my music, it began as something I did for myself but now that I can see it impact other people’s lives, it is a whole different thing. What sort of impact are you hoping your music will make on listeners/other music artists in the world? John Mayer makes me think of my family and summer. I want my music to be attached to people’s memories like that. If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? New Orleans. From The Meters to Fats Domino, the soul is crazy. What sort of themes do you want to explore in your music? I could write about love or my left leg, it does seem slightly stronger than the right but does that mean it deserves a song? I usually let the music go where it needs to. How do you feel you’ll cope in the public eye? I want to say I could find a balance between private and public life but music is literally all I do, either I’m a really sad person or I have it sorted. MCROBIN Hey there! Who are we speaking to and what instruments do you play? Hey to you. You’re speaking with James. Mcrobin is my solo project and I play guitar, keys and sing. Can you tell us a bit about your average rural performance, and what makes these gigs so enjoyable? I grew up in North-East Victoria, near Mount Buffalo, so I head up that way as often as I can. My favourite rural gigs usually involve a four hour drive, playing music for a few hours to some nice strangers, and then eating my body weight in pizza. How’s the reception for your new single Concrete Feet been? I haven’t really written anything this ‘poppy’ before so I was a bit apprehensive about releasing it. I’m really stoked with the response from everyone. It’s a song about having the guts to create your own life, rather than letting yourself be weighed down by conformity. Have you learnt or grown in the time between releasing your Fault Lines EP and Concrete Feet? My songwriting has changed a lot in last 12 months; or at least my methods have. Lyrics are rarely the main focus for me, I tend to get my point across better through the music. On this EP, I tried to create the most honest and personal soundscapes I could and trusted the flow of stream of consciousness lyricism to support them. MCROBIN will play with RAThammock, Didirri and Charm Of Finches, at the Wesley Anne on Friday September 16.

ZII
What inspired you to apply for Melbourne Music Bank? Having been a part of the music scene now for 12 months we’d just started working on a new project and I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? It’s been a childhood dream of my to perform in Africa, specifically Zimbabwe and South Africa because its where I grew up and I admire the energy they give off. Why do you think it’s so difficult to break into the international music circuit? There’s a lot of talent coming out at the moment as a result of the Internet and navigating the traffic, creating some engaging content is extremely difficult. How do you perceive the music industry today? It’s a growing marketplace with many opportunities but also very difficult to navigate if you don’t have the correct knowhow. What sort of impact are you hoping your music will make on listeners/other music artists in the world? I write music to inspire and challenge the stereotypes, I’m hoping my music will reshape the way people see the world and challenge their perceptions. What is your goal as a future musician? We’re actually in the process of putting together a few projects that will allow myself and some of my peers to be mentors to younger upcoming musicians. That’s our focus at the moment. ZII is a finalist in Melbourne Music Bank 2016. Head to bankofmelbourne.com.au/ melbmusicbank/ to cast your vote.

Q&A
SEEDY JESUS Define your genre in five words? Space blues tripped electric jams. Seedy Jesus have played a bucketload of gigs around the world. What’s been your favourite? Freak Valley Festival in Netphen, Germany. We found our extended family there. A lot of crazy fun, killer bands and awesome music. Any big achievements to date that you reckon we should know about? There’s always small landmarks, touring Europe was a dream realised, releasing any music is an achievement. Gigging with bands you love is an achievement. Tell us about your releases. Where can we find ‘em? There are five EPs, one full length album, 4 x 7” releases, one Etched Vinyl European Tour release, one extremely limited two track vinyl release, a live in Germany album (vinyl only) and a collaboration album release with Isaiah Mitchell ( Earthless) - I think that’s all. What’s one thing you’d like to do as a band this year? Late September we’re touring the east coast with Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless. Playing intimate shows, as his backing band, playing songs from bands that have influenced him as a musician. Tell us about your album Tranquonauts. It’s a collaboration between Seedy Jeezus and Isaiah Mitchell. It’s 2 x 20 minute instrumental jams. Each track is different, and there’s a continuity in them. SEEDY JESUS will launch Tranquonauts with Isaiah Mitchell at The Tote on Thursday September 22 and Friday September 23.

THE WE SL EY AN N E The Trash Trio performs New Orleans style jazz in the stripped back arrangement of clarinet, bass and guitar. On Sunday September 18, they’re treating punters at The Wesley Anne to the music of Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton alongside some New Orleans staples. Featuring young stallions Josh Kelly on clarinet and saxophone, Hiroki Hoshino on double bass and Sam O’ Halloran on guitar, it’s all set to be a nostalgic-flavoured good time. It’s an early one starting at 6pm, and entry is 100% free.

G’day there - who are we speaking to? Hey I’m Derek - drummer from The Council. You’re about to step into the studio to start work on your second album. What lessons are you taking from the first? As a two-piece, we’ve historically tried to limit our overdubs and utilise analogue tape as much as possible. We’ve found it helps keep the music raw and energetic. This time around, we’re allowing ourselves room to experiment with more advanced techniques, as we’re looking to produce a larger, more diverse sound You’re a loud band for a two-piece, what tricks are you doing with your gear or general performances? As far as drums go - I’ve just taken ownership of a Ludwig Classic kit, with 24” bass drum. It’s a high class piece of drum porn and sounds seriously huge. Hamish runs his bass and guitar amps simultaneously, and he’s got a pretty keen ear for balancing his dirty sound so it’s in-ya-face but never too aggressive. You performed at Rock Against CUB at The Tote recently. What was the vibe around that? A bunch of bands got together to raise some cash for the 55 CUB workers who were laid off and reoffered their jobs at a 65% wage cut. A great cause to help hard-working people who are being pushed around by a faceless corporation.

MELBOURNE’S MOST COMPREHENSIVE GIG GUIDE
This weekend is the 8th annual Latin Spring Festival in Coburg. As the name suggests, the festival is a fertile celebration of Spring and multiculturalism. All weekend you can catch live performances and food that transport you from Grove St to Spain and Columbia. It’s the perfect weekend for it too, and as well as food and entertainment, there will be numerous venders and artisans selling trinkets you might not be able to get for at least another year. This would be a great thing to drag that parent who’s always bugging you to do something with them along to. If you want to check out who’s playing head to www.latinspringfestival.com. au/#music If you don’t want to do something with the folks then you can ditch Sunday dinner and roll to Wrangler Studios in West Footscray for a hella cool All Ages show. Belting out pop punk all night, Wrangler Studios open their doors for Half Breed Heroes, Dear Jane, Blossom, Stand Tall and Future Static. It’s only $10 and you know there’s going to be one cool kid that you know who went and said it was the best show of their life so don’t let them have all the fun. You can scavenge more info from the Wrangler Studios facebook page.

MELBOURNE AUDIO TRADE SHOW
Once Bitter Hits The Australian Craft Beer Market Once Bitter hit the market back in May and has been embraced by Melburnites ever since, rapidly becoming a popular session beer across venues and retail outlets throughout the city. The brainchild of Collins Street Brewing Company founder Ze’ev Meltzer, Once Bitter’s thesis is about creating high quality, flavourful craft beer that’s thirst quenching above all else. Their signature Urban Ale sits somewhere between a classic Australian golden ale and a Belgian blonde – featuring pleasant tropical notes with a crisp, clean finish. It’s a premium drop for the people of Melbourne, described as a celebration of the city - a tribute to its laneway culture and a blend of old and new. You can grab a bottle of the good stuff at Cookie, Papa Goose, Saint & Rogue, Pawn & Co, The Smith Prahran, Carlisle Wine Bar, Tsubu Bar, The Workers Club, Bobbie Peels, Smith and Daughters, Network Bar, Speakeasy Kitchen Bar, Amici, Firestone Pizza, Classico, Bartronica, MsBartronica, Island Somewhere, Veludo, 29th Apartment, Misty, The Laisse Faire, Pilgrim, Bottlehouse, The Melbourne Wine Store, The Rising Sun, Cambridge Cellars and Acland Cellars with more venues set to get on board in the summer months.
Red Spice Road Celebrates Ninth Birthday With Massive Giveaway
In its inaugural year, the Melbourne Audio Trade Show will bring musicians, audio professionals and enthusiasts face to face with the best software providers in the business. Held at the SAE Institute, the day will consist of product demos, workshops and networking opportunities. With the attendance of industry leaders such as Pro Tools, Ableton and Roland, it’s an invaluable opportunity for participants to get hands-on experience with the products, and to connect with the wider industry.
will provide the event with a solid dose of entertainment. In a roundtable discussion and Q&A format these industry experts will talk the unique pieces of gear that they couldn’t live without, as well as what got them into gear in the first place. With each panel member coming from a different musical background, it’s a conversation that will span across analogue gear, electronic and synth-based products, high-end professional audio equipment, and laptopcentred composition. As an information-rich event the Melbourne Audio Trade Show has been designed to incorporate all areas relevant to the audio industry. Which is why HEARsmart will be in attendance, staging a hearing test in one of the studios, and offering advice on hearing safety and management. This is a free event, and Parton affirms that it’s open to anyone with an interest in audio, regardless of level of experience or musical background. “So musicians who are interested in exploring and making their own music, to high-end professionals that already have studios but are looking to see what the latest products are. There’s new stuff coming out all the time.” And the underlining feeling is that this is an event fuelled by passion and a genuine interest in audio innovation and technologies. It’s no surprise then that many of the providers will be spruiking educational pricing as well, allowing students to get a discount on their gear. BY CHRIS SCOTT MELBOURNE AUDIO TRADE SHOW will take place at SAE Institute Melbourne on Saturday September 24.
THIS AIN’T EVEN A HARD ONE Hey goobers, I spent 15 minutes on this so if you spend any longer doing it you are no good at stuff.

A Pro Tools Cloud Collaboration and iPad dock demonstration, lead by renowned producer and mixer Forrester Savell, will head the product workshops. While other highlights include a Q&A with Steven Slate of Slate Digital, regarding the latest Slate Plugins and Hardware, and a workshop from distinguished software maker Ableton. The attendance of Roland and Native Instruments also come at the perfect time, the former recently announcing a plethora of new products, while the latter is set to demo their freshly released Komplete 11 suite. As the man behind the staging of the event, Gareth Parton says it’s about breaking down existing barriers to the industry. “I want to get the providers to come in and show off what they’ve got, but I also want to open the door up to other people to come through, because there’s such a huge community of people making music, whether they’re just bedroom hobbyists or audio professionals, and there’s not really any opportunities for them to get together. It’s a networking opportunity.” In establishing these relationships, Parton believes that participants will get a much better understanding of how they can make the technology work for them – a distinct benefit of face-to-face interaction. “It’s a chance to get hands-on rather than lots of people trying to get by just by learning off YouTube videos these days. You know, just trying to learn that stuff and they don’t really get to talk to pros or actually get their hands on gear, and have that sort of feedback from product specialists, which they can get from this.” A panel discussion featuring Forrester Savell, producer Tom Larkin (Shihad), and Matt Ridgeway from Ableton Users Group

VOID OF VISION SIGN TO UNFD UNFD signed Melbourne metalcorists Void Of Vision, releasing their debut album Children Of Chrome on Friday September 30. It calls the album “Void Of Vision’s statement for people who give a fuck in a world intoxicated by power, greed and hatred.” The first cut comes via ‘//’ featuring Drew Dijorio from Stray From The Path, a band who helped shape Void Of Vision. “We share very similar ideals relating to the condition of this world,” says BEAT MAGAZINE PAGE 74
UNIFIED ANNOUNCES GRANT TO “REALISE DREAMS” Independent empire Unified has announced The Unified Grant, “available to passionate people to help them realise their dreams.” It was announced by Unified founder and CEO Jaddan Comerford during his BIGSOUND keynote speech in Brisbane last week. He said, “As someone who started a business with nothing, at a young age (in his mid-teens) and on my own, I want to encourage more people to follow their dreams.” The grant is for music creatives who don’t play instruments; as photographers, producers, videographers, web developers, graphic designers, journalists, app builders, data analysts and others. Go to www.theunifiedgrant.com, deadline is Monday October 31.
THINGS WE HEAR Which muso who scared his friends by disappearing for a few days turned up explaining he’d been on “a spiritual journey”? Did Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston fizzle out because he allegedly wanted to play up the publicity and she didn’t? Will we see Brucie and the E-Streeters back in Oz in February? Initially the rumours were that they play the AFL Grand Final. But the new date comes after Frontier Touring’s Michael Gudinski dropped hints on Melbourne radio, and emphasised he’ll be playing Hanging Rock in Victoria again. Are The Strokes working to release new material next year? Rap duo A.B. Original’s Q&A keynote at BIGSOUND in Brisbane was one of the more entertaining sessions. Briggs and Trials revealed they’re doing Laneway Festival. Moderator Lindsay McDougall had a dig at how Trials was a dumb stage name. Trials quipped back, “I’d love to change it … know what I mean, Frenzal Rhomb?” Speaking of names, Chet Faker is dropping his stage moniker after five years and reverting to good old Nick Murphy for his second album. He explained, “There’s an evolution happening and I wanted to let you know where it’s going.” There’s no release date yet for the follow-up to the breakthrough Built On Glass. Presumably much to the alarm of his management, Vance Joy is decompressing from three relentless years of touring the world by taking up skateboarding. Duck, a bunch of musicals is being made based around hit songs. Aside from INXS’s,

Let’s hope Melbourne-based dark electro pop Evangeline likes eating snails. She heads to France this week for three weeks performing six radio-promoted showcases to crowds of up to 10,000. France is a strong market for her. Polydor France secured licensing rights for her worldwide (outside of Aus/ NZ, where she is with indie Razor Recordings). Evangeline also signed a worldwide (excluding Australia and NZ) sub-publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing, France. Polydor discovered her after her second single My Kingdom (William Black Remix), co-written with Jan Skubiszewski, went Top 5 in the Spotify Global Viral chart and got over 3.5 million streams across all platforms. She is getting strong radio airplay including NRJ and Virgin Radio, where she is charting. Evangeline is managed by Erin Jameson and Helen O’Malley of Jameson & Co Management and Publicity, with 123 Agency as her Australian booking agent.
Fast rising Melbourne singer/songwriter Alex Lahey has signed with U.S bookers Bruce Solar and Joan Lee at APA Agency, saying “Touring the Americas is a lifelong dream of mine.” The agency’s clients include Dolly Parton, Modest Mouse and Brian Wilson. She is currently touring Australia until Saturday October 8 behind debut EP B-Grade University on Caroline Australia.

First, the good news: 40% of Australians rank music as their #1 passion and more people are listening to music than ever before, according to a report by US based global self-service ticketing agency Eventbrite. The bad news from The Australian Music Consumer Report, though, is that not everyone will spend money on purchasing music, because many of them grew up in the post-Napster era when music was expected for free. In fact, females aged 16-24 are the lowest buyers of music even though they rate it as among their top passions. The 25-34 male demographic are second worst at buying music. It’s the Gen Z males (16 to 24) who drive Australia’s live scene and recorded music industry. 46% of them go to see a gig at least once a month, compared to 18% of females who are twice as likely not to go if they don’t have someone to go with, or don’t know the act. For a snapshot of current music consumption in Australia, the report says 50% of us download to listen to music, 23% use CDs and one in ten use streaming. The 35-44 group uses 50% new media and 50% traditional. New media is only used by 30% of 45-54 year olds and 20% of 5565 year olds. In other figures, 35% of us head to YouTube to listen to an artist after discovering them. Radio and CDs remain the two most common ways to consume recorded music – but that is because almost half (49%) of Australians are over 44. But the transition has begun: 75% of Millennials and 86% on Gen Z use new media (YouTube, streaming, downloads, online radio) as the primary channel for consumption of recorded music. Between 2008-2014 Australia saw a 42% increase in revenue from live performances and a 17% increase in attendance. “Looking at the festivals market, we have seen a shift away from the larger mass market festivals, to more boutique offerings that offer a lot more than just a musical experience,” says the report.
frontman Jack Bergin. “His section of the song in particular is a satirical take on the current inadequate immigration policies put in place by the Australian government. To have passion about what you’re singing about is such a crucial component of this genre and Drew’s part of the song does that justice, coming across exactly how it was intended to.”

one is around Meat Loaf ’s Bat Out Of Hell and Donna Summer hits. Speaking of musicals, a fan has gone online with the theory that either Danny or Sandy were dead for most of Grease. Clues were scattered through the 1978 film, including the flying car as a metaphor for Sandy (played of course by our Livvy) ascending to the heavens. Danny doesn’t save her from drowning after all but dies himself and the movie is really about how he wished his life had panned out. One wet blanket sniffed, “Explain Grease 2.” The response was that people can stay in comas for a very long time. So there. Johnny Depp is to play a detective trying to solve Tupac and Notorious BIG murders, convinced rogue members of the LAPD were involved. Axl Rose flew 18-year-old waitress Sadie Elledge all-expenses paid to AC/DC’s show at Washington’s Verizon Center on Saturday September 17 after reports she was dissed by a racist customer. Elledge, of Honduran and Mexican descent and born in the US, who worked in a fast-food place in Harrisonburg, Virginia was handed a note by the arsewipe, “We only tip citizens.” Rose personally rang to invite her. It’s the end for 155-year-old London Hotel in Port Melbourne, a long time live music space. Plans by a developer to build an eight-storey apartment block on the site were rejected. But as The Age pointed out, planning authorities rejected the first plan because it cast shadows on the foreshore reserve, which means a second application won’t be far away. The developer already has permission to knock it down as the building has no heritage listing. After their current Aussie dates, Melbourne blues rock band Palace Of The King are heading back to Europe for a five-week tour in November/December. Their French label Listenable Records has released their second album Valles Marineris there. Fronted by Androids and Superjesus guitarist Tim Henwood, the dates take in Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Spain. Drummer Travis Dragani is steeling himself for people coming up to him and asking, “Hey, aren’t you that feller on TV, presenting Gardening Australia, Costa Georgiadis? Mate, you sure look like him.” It’s almost a daily occurrence, sighs the drummer. Kanye West confirms joint Drake album is happening, and also that he’s launching a kid’s clothes range with Kim Kardashian West. In a bid to raise money for the Salvos, the Totally Workwear brand is hoping to rope 1000 people in Cairns to try for a new Guinness world record – whistling a tune for five minutes, to break the current record set in the UK of 853. Among the six DJs at the first New Year’s Day festival, Twice as Nice at Mount Duneed Estate in Geelong is Cats champ Corey Enright. The event is organised by Roundhouse Entertainment, the folks behind A Day On The Green.

SOULFEST PROMOTER MUST PAY $500,000 The Federal Circuit Court in Sydney ordered Soulfest promoter John Denison to pay APRA AMCOS $437,000 in compensatory and extra damages for infringement of the Copyright Act (1968) and $70,000 in legal costs. The costs go back to 2014 over “Soulfest, Supafest and other tours and events.” Richard Mallett, Head of Revenue at APRA AMCOS said, “Venues, caterers and artists are able to withhold their services – but songwriters’ work cannot be withheld after the fact.”
UNIVERSAL MUSIC TO LAUNCH RECORDING STUDIO Universal Music is next month opening a recording studio Forbes Street Studios, in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. In the ‘80s, it used to be Paradise Studios, run by singer Billy Fields (‘Bad Habits’) and where INXS, Icehouse, Chisel and the Oils recorded some of their most important albums.

DOLLY DIAMOND TO CURATE CABARET FEST Cabaret performer Dolly Diamond, currently performing in her Diva Fever show, is Artistic Director for the 2017 Melbourne Cabaret Festival. “It’s about time you called,” she quipped when they rang. Diamond plans to unveil more underground cabaret acts and others who widen what “cabaret” means.

DIDDY REMAINS HIP HOP’S BIGGEST EARNER
FLUME TRACK DEBUTS IN TOP 10 AT US RADIO
Sean “Diddy” Combs topped US business magazine Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings list for a second year. This year his Bad Boy Reunion Tour and a short film for his new Ciroc vodka campaign sees him earn US$62 million in 2016. Jay-Z is at #2 with $53.5 million while Dr. Dre moves to $41 million after the box office smash of NWA’s Straight Outta Compton movie. Drake, Wiz Khalifa and Nicki Minaj are right after. The list is gross earnings from touring, record sales, streaming, publishing, merchandise sales and endorsements.
Fresh from selling out shows on his 70-date world tour selling 290,000 tickets, Flume’s Never Be Like You ft. Kai entered the top 10 at US radio after it was certified platinum for 1 million US sales. He’s put out a ‘fun’ video featuring fans at shows in Australia, NZ, Europe and America. The track has had 200 million Spotify plays and gone four x platinum in Oz where the album Skin went gold. In November he’s releasing a Skin Companion EP of tracks cut during the album sessions and set up a website for merchandise created with Jonathan Zawada.
