As clichéd as it sounds, the rise of pop-rap sensation Iggy Azalea truly is the makings of fairytale. After spending her formative years in rural New South Wales, Amethyst Amelia Kelly made an incredible leap of faith across the Pacific to follow her dreams, as outlined in debut commercial single Work – “No money, no family, 16 in the middle of Miami”. In the following six or so years, Kelly evolved into the multi-faceted Iggy Azalea. After gaining attention with spitfire cuts Pu$$y and Two Times in early 2011, Azalea went on to navigate through a sea of legal and label politicking to foster the elongated gestation process of The New Classic – what’s set to be her debut full-length commercial release. Speaking fresh from the announcement of hitting the 1 World Music Festival, Azalea is on the cusp of putting the finishing touches on The New Classic. “It’s a few days away from completion as I speak. I’m nervous, it’s my first album. A happy nervous ball of anticipation,” she regales without giving away too much in the way of details for the record, tentatively slated for a September release. As is par for the course in today’s rap modus operandi, Azalea’s oft-delayed debut album has been preceded by a prolific output of mixtape and EP releases. This creative resolve is intensified at the final stages of the album’s production. “I’m writing four or five days a week at the moment, but that’s because I’m recording,” she assesses. “I think of concepts and write them into my phone. Writing takes a clear mind so often it’s the world I have to turn off.” The trajectory of Iggy Azalea is as tremendous as it gets, rocketing to such great heights in what amounts to little more than a twoyear span. Hitting her stride at such a velocity, does Azalea feel in control the course set to the stratosphere? “No. I can aim and shoot for the stars but it’s up to the world at the end of the day. To control something that broad is impossible, really,” she muses with humility.

It’s a matter of days until this year’s MTV Music Awards, for which Azalea is nominated in the Artist To Watch category for the film clip to Work. The ceremony is as definitive a bastion of pop culture as any. “I don’t consider myself [a pop star] yet, but I guess it’s a person who influences the masses through music. That’s what a pop star is to me.”

Throughout her online presence, Azalea still occasionally projects an affinity for her homeland. However, home for the Aussie-bred rapper is now very much LA. So what does Australia mean to Iggy Azalea at this stage in her life? “I’m not exactly sure, but it’s always close to my heart,” she beams. Ostensibly, you can imagine Azalea as an outsider in the realm of US mainstream rap – “Well, it depends who I’m standing next to,” she retorts with a laugh. As well as her musical pursuits, Azalea also enjoys a successful modelling career. As such, style and aestheticism permeate all aspects of her craft. “Art is all encompassing. It’s every medium. Style is as important as music,” she proclaims. “All are equal because all influence and emote things within us.” The release of The New Classic is set to be a tangible amalgamation of Azalea’s career to date. As for what hopes and dreams lie beyond the album’s release, Azalea is philosophical. “Happiness,” she states. “I hope I can be happy because at times it seems harder to maintain that than money or success.”

You can catch Iggy Azalea alongside Moby, Snoop Dogg and more at the 1 World Music Festival which takes place at the Marina Range in Singapore on Friday September 20 and Saturday September 21. Belying her youth (having just turned 23 years of age), Azalea has attained a sense of resoluteness, projecting erudite assessments on the cultural implications of her art while rising above the industry follies of beefs and gossip in her retained Australian accent. “I fight for it daily,” she states on her ability to retain a sense of self within the machinations of the music industry.

Recently having returned home, Cameron Argon (aka Big Chocolate) is now unpacking his bags after the grueling Vans Warped Tour. Many dates and many states across the USA later, he finds a moment to reminisce with justifiable satisfaction over his short however illustrious career. “I’m just home from what has been a long, long tour,” he chimes proudly. “The Vans Warped Tour was great – it was a long, hot tour; but I played some amazing shows and met some amazing people. And now I’m home for a few days and am headed back to Australia next week.” Yet while his level of exhaustion is completely evident, he claims he can’t wait to get back to Australia, even after only a short stint at home base. And musically, he insists his fans can expect more of an eclectic mix of his latest material fused with the tunes he really enjoys jamming to. “I am working on my Australia set right now,” he adds with excitement. “It will be good after a summer on the Warped Tour and having to play 30 minute sets. I get to ‘stretch my legs’ a bit and play some longer sets.” To be fair too, it’s somewhat of an injustice giving a man like Argon such a short stint on the mixer. Indeed, with a resume so extensive and impressive – especially given his age – he still can’t be drawn on a particular style or genre. And whether its metal or dub or electro or techno, he seems to have done it all. “In the beginning, I just gradually got more and more into making music when I was in high school – and that sort of grew into what I do today. As my musical tastes have changed, my interest in electronic music grew and it became a sort of a natural progression.” No less, this socalled progression has seen him be a part of the metal scene – firstly as a vocalist for the death metal band Burning The Masses as well as co-founding Disfiguring the Goddess. Fast forward to 2013 and he says he hasn’t been making any dubstep or electro lately at all. “I’ve been getting more into techno and house,” he professes. “In fact, the more I dig into electronic dance music in general, the

clearer what type of music I should be making becomes. That said, I still make metal under the name Disfiguring The Goddess – that is a project I work on when the urge strikes me.” “I’ve also just done a remix for Five Knives that you can hear on my Soundcloud. I also have a newer collaboration project called Small Face with DJ Two Stacks. There isn’t much public knowledge there, but we have a good amount of musical content with more to come. Also, I did The Clean EP which came out last spring. It’s a lot different to Red Headed Locc and the follow up, The Red EP. Otherwise, I have no plans for another release until I get to spend some time in the studio and experiment with some different sounds and what not. I will probably soon release a mix based on my summer on Warped Tour and the music I was playing out there as well.” Otherwise – and who knows where he finds the time – the lad enjoys what he refers to as ‘doing basic stuff’. “I like to go on walks, play video games and drink coffee basic stuff. Actually, I have a coffee shop near my house that I walk to every day when I am home. It’s like a ritual at this point.” Finally then, he describes his palpable excitement for getting back to Australia. “I’m going to play a DJ set, so a setup of a mixer and a computer. I have a lot of fun on stage and enjoy seeing what the audience gets out of it. I’m also very excited to get out to that part of the country and the world once again. I really enjoy seeing how the crowds grow from one visit to the next in general. I hope the Australian tour is going to show a lot of that.”

bro safari wo rd s / j o c a m p b e ll ll

Texas based Bro Safari (real name Nick Weiller) is probably best known to us as ‘Knick’ from drum and bass outfit Evol Intent. A decade on and those guys are still making outputs together while Weiller has also ventured out into other forms of bass. US trio Evol Intent are no less than drum ‘n’ bass dons. Formed in 2000 consisting of Enemy (Ashley Jones), Gigantor (Mike Diasio) and Knick (Nick Weiller) this crew were behind some of the baddest drum and bass hard step numbers hailing from the US in the naughties. They’re still producing together, currently involved in a collab project with Dutch trio Noisia and having recently remixed for Black Sun Empire, but it’s their individual side projects that are raising eyebrows. Enemy has gone on to produce disco under the moniker Treasure Fingers while the Gigantor is making electro house as Computer Club. Knick has decided to stick with the everevolving genre of bass, taking in moombahton, dubstep and most recently, trap. When asked why the members of Evol Intent have all taken such different directions, Knick is philosophical. “I don’t think it was intentional, I just think that over time we’ve got into other things, just messing around with other genres,” he says from his home in Austin. “Evol Intent has been around for a long time and I think it’s just kind of natural that we start doing our own thing on the side.” Knick’s thing on the side first came in the form of teaming up with Jake Stanczak aka Kill The Noise to make genrebending sounds under the outfit name of Ludachrist. His most recent venture from the lab is with San Franciscan UFO as Knife’s most recent alter-ego, Bro Safari. They’ve just dropped a highly eclectic LP, Animal, which masterfully encompasses drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop, glitch and dubstep with a heavy dose of trap. It’s more or less the culmination of Knick’s various side projects experimenting with various forms of bass. “For me, the inspiration was working with UFO and I like to think it went both ways,” Knick says of the LP. “We’ve known each other for a long time, he’s an old drum and bass head from the ‘90s and we both really respect each other’s music and creative input. “The entire time that we’ve been collaborating, we’ve been doing it via the Internet just sending stems back and forth; we didn’t actually have a plan to make an album. We were just working together and realised we had 16 songs or something, so it made sense to package them as an album and at that point, we cut out about five tracks. They produced two of tracks on the LP together in the same geographical space when UFO made the journey to Austin to work on two of the standouts from the record - Drama and Animal. “That was when we were in the final stages of polishing things off. We tried not to over think it and it all came very naturally. We just made what we wanted to make and that was inspirational enough - just being able to make what we want and set the tempo where we want.” Animal was only put out as a free download in a move that Knick says was part of a strategy to spread the Bro Safari word. “I’ve kinda built this whole Bro Safari thing on free downloads,” he explains. “At the start I just want people to hear my music and the best way to do that is to give it to them free with no hoops to jump through. They just have to go click a button and it downloads to their computer. And over time, I just kept doing that and people were really responsive and more so, they were really appreciative. “It worked so well that when it came to the album, the end goal was to get people to listen to it, and you know, it’s not really about money, because to be quite honest, there really isn’t that much money in selling records.” In terms of what to expect from this expert of convergence in his live set, Knick says it’s all about giving us what we want. “I approach DJing a little bit differently to the way I make music in the studio,” he says. “I feel like it also depends on where I’m playing. I tailor my sets to be appealing to everyone - that’s what I want - I don’t want to get up there and just play weird stuff just for the sake of being different. I want to get up there and rock the party - it’s that simple.”
