CR GAETANO GRECO MAYOR, CITY OF DAREBIN 4
This year we’ve partnered with local community world music orchestra, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde, to present a very special composition competition for Darebin-based composers. The winning compositions will be workshopped with the orchestra and then performed as part of the Darebin Music Feast program. I would like to thank Darebin Music Feast’s major sponsors, including Leader Newspapers, Yarra Trams, Jellis Craig Real Estate, PBS Radio, Beat Magazine and APRA, for their continued support of this wonderful event. I also thank our supporter partners for the Songwriters Award and The Bain Marie for their valued contributions. There’s a lot packed into this program that’s worth discovering. I encourage you to get out and enjoy some of the diverse musical talent in our city.
This year’s Feast smells like BBQ! Charcoal grills, hotplates, bush ovens and spits turn and sizzle across the world, as does the music! The 2014 Music Feast program is a celebration of musicians traversing the world, collecting stories, capturing sounds and finding inspiration.
The Bain Marie, festival hub bar throws a spotlight on Americana, Blues, Swamp and Hills music with local and interstate guests. The travelling folk theme continues in our Local Venue Shows program with Balkan Folk, European jazz, Gypsy-pop, Balinese orchestral, pan-pipers and loads of Latin rhythms. Fourteen groups have received Artists Support Program grants to stage innovative works in the majestic Northcote Town Hall. This year’s selection has a unique focus on historical texts, multi-media platforms and orchestral collaborations connecting to Eastern and European cultures. A selection of Darebin artists talk about their travels and the countries that inspire them in a new Artists in Conversation series, hosted by arts writer, presenter Richard Watts, taking place in the festival hub bar. Saturday 11 October will be action packed with local talent, with two Busker and Community Stages thanks to the Preston and Reservoir Village Traders Associations, plus our first musical bike ride, Peddle, Sing & Ding! This is the perfect space for fringe artists to jump in, participate and co-create festival fun in the sunshine.

LOUISA, LUCY & ROWENA WISE
HUE ORLEANS HOT LOUISIANA KITCHEN BETH PATTERSON (USA) MCALPINES FUSILIERS
These three nationally celebrated Darebin based singer/songwriters, will perform at our special Opening Night event. The voices of Louisa, Lucy and Rowena Wise blend in the magical way that sisters’, daughters’ and mothers’ voices do. Between them they play violin, ukulele, guitar and Appalachian dulcimer, and have performed for years as part of The Wise Family Band. The concert will feature new work, plus special guests including Staffan Guinane (formerly of Francolin) and accordionist Geoff Le Blanc (The Harmaniax and The Le Blanc Brothers).
The Hue Orleans Hot Louisiana Kitchen is a spontaneous fry-up of some of Melbourne’s most notorious musicians, created especially for the Music Feast hub bar Opening and Closing Nights. With upright and downtrodden piano-driven dance music, HOHLK will pay homage to the sound and attitude of early New Orleans. Featuring the master whaler Darcy McNulty on his trusty Saxophone, Hue Blanes bringing-down-thesky vocals, and sporadic energy across the ivories. With Hue Blanes (piano/vocals), Darcy McNulty (saxophone/vocals), Rory McDougall (drums) Bryce Gilhome (trombone), Marty Holoubek (bass) and surprise guests.
Beth Patterson is a dynamic, multi-instrumentalist, who plays the bouzouki. Combining traditional Irish, Celtic and folk ballads with Cajun, world-beat and progressive rock, she blends it all with her own creative songwriting and unique sense of humour. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, New Orleans-based Patterson gathers musical influences like she’s cooking up a pot of spicy gumbo. Her travels to Ireland and her ethnomusicology studies at University College Cork have sharpened her palette. Listeners can now feast on her sonic flavors of Celtic, West African, Indian, Balkan and Indonesian music.
McAlpine’s Fusiliers recently released their second album When Giants Walked Our Streets, produced by Dean Muller (The Cosmic Psyhcos), to rave reviews. The album furthers the band’s journey into the Australian/ Celtic/folk/rock musical landscape. ‘The Fusiliers give all this material a special treatment – “swaggie punk” – loud, proud and uncompromisingly Australian’ (John Lamp, The Pulse). Their debut album Sons and Daughters of the Soil ‘… captures the band’s sound, a musical place where rebellion, toil, tradition, romance and brute honesty connect’ (Mark Coombes, KLFM).

PBS LIVE TO AIR ALL STARS SPECIAL!
RATTLIN’ BONES BLACKWOOD
PUGSLEY BUZZARD BIG BAND
PBS LIVE TO AIR SOULGROOVE ’66
Our grooviest media partners are bringing a hot afternoon of all-star PBS DJ’s, playing the hippest swing, soul, r&b, exotica and rock ‘n’ roll in The Bain Marie festival hub bar. Join DJ’s Emma Peel (‘Switched On,’ plays Latin jazz, boogaloo, samba, bossa nova, European sound library, soul-jazz), Matt McFetridge (‘Jungle Fever,’ plays obscure r&b, rockabilly, exotica and 50s and 60s rock ‘n’ roll) and guests for an allvinyl three-hour stone love / jungle fever / switched on clam jam!
Rattlin’ Bones Blackwood believes in the healing properties of a hip shakin’ shuffle; possession of the spirit; the searing heat ‘n’ crackle of a cranked valve amplifier; and the eternal search for a bigger bass drum. He’s a one-man-band who tears through raucous rhythm & blues, boogie, rockabilly and vintage rock ‘n’ roll like his hair is on fire. Born acoustically on the streets of Tennessee, his show has become an electric monster and his sound defies the appearance of his setup. He will tear it up while you dance your arse off.
Prepare to be booglarised by one of Australia`s finest consummate artists, who is hot off the back of a sizzling European Tour. Buzzard has performed all over the world, from Berlin, to the New Orleans French Quarter, to the Himalayan Blues Festival in Kathmandu. Pugsley has dazzled and delighted audiences far and wide with his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues, good time rollicking boogie and blazing stride style piano, all played together with his mesmerising voice that makes the ladies sigh and grown men cry.
Soulgroove ’66 is presented by Pierre Baroni every Saturday from 3pm to 5pm on PBS. On Saturday the 11th of October, he’ll be swinging it from the festival hub bar. Let’s hear what it’s all about from the man himself – “I try to take the listener on a little chronological trip through the golden age of black American music. I keep it fairly raw and down home, from the rhythm and blues of the late 1950s, to the funky soul of the early 1970s, all on 7” vinyl 45s, with the odd LP-only track thrown in.”

TRIPLE DENIM
FRANK SULTANA
MOJO JUJU & T-BONE
SUNDAY STOMP!
A love for American folk and bluegrass, brings three friends together to form a group they’ve irreverently dubbed Triple Denim. Their title smacks of country music fashion crimes, but the songs are delivered with authority. George Jackson (fiddle) and Daniel Watkins (mandolin) met in their teens at a bluegrass festival and quickly cemented a deep musical connection. Enter Mitch Brown, a wandering troubadour, to round out the trio. The vocal harmonies are lonesome and wistful, the musicality is based in tradition, and they sing up a storm.
He’s Mr Mojo Rising, an old soul with a good heart, and a direct line, tapped straight into the source. Tipping his hat to the great Mississippi delta bluesmen of the 1930s, as well as the reckless abandon of the 1960s, ‘…no one can take away Frank’s uncanny ability to make you feel that desire to stop and listen to what he is saying’ ( J. Whitake, 272 Records A&R, Los Angeles). You will fall in love with the man and his music.
Mojo Juju is 5’3” of wise-crackin’, sass-mouthin’, jump-jivin’ attitude, wrapped up in a zoot suit and propped up on Cuban heels. Long-time collaborator Steve ‘T-Bone’ Luzuriaga (former Snake Oil Merchant) is the slick, suave and mysterious man behind the drums – and Mojo’s brother. After reuniting as a two-piece in 2013, to support the legendary Tony Joe White on his Australian tour, the sibling duo rediscovered their love for playing music together. Now with a two-month European tour under their belt, they occasionally perform in this stripped back, intimate style.
Loud gigs for weekend carers and their charges to let loose to some quality contemporary music and stomp around! The Livingstone Daisies deliver their delicious harmonised pop on Sunday 12 October, featuring Liz Stringer, Michael Barclay and the Walker Brothers. Then the electrified blues-boogie of Goatpiss Gasoline (pictured) get the house rockin’ on Sunday 19 October, featuring Van Walker, Mailtand guitar prodigy Hank Elwood and Dave ‘The Suit’ Watkins. What a great way to enjoy some real music with the kids and yes, the bar will be open!

SHAKY STILLS
DARK TROUBADOURS
OPEN MIC NIGHT
ARCHER
Late in a dimly-lit cabin, in the Dandenong Ranges, after whiskeys and a jam, Patrick said to his mate “I’m still shaking.” He held out his hands – “What about the Shaky Stills?” When they awoke in the morning, it was decided, Shaky Stills would be their name. Cold Hands Warm Heart is their 2014 release and you can hear the influence of the hills in tracks that talk of love, loss, distant memories and hope. Theirs is a blend of folk, country, rhythm and blues with hooks to sing along to.
One of the chief singer/songwriters of much celebrated alt-country/folk collective, The Gin Club, Adrian Stoyles (penned ‘Gabriel’, ‘Already Gone’ and ‘Rain’) heads up a special night. The Dark Troubadours session brings together ex-Brisbane artists who performed regularly at (the now closed) Troubadour. Adrian is joined by one-time collaborator, Jacob S. Harris, who has recently dusted off his guitar to revisit his tunes of love, the sea, wandering and wondering for our delight. Adrian and Jacob will be joined by a select group of Melbournebased Dark Troubadours on the night.
Welcome to our very own Open Mic Night. This year’s event is open to performers of folk, Americana, blues, swamp and hills genres – and their derivatives. We want slide guitars, fiddles, accordions, stomp boxes, keys, horns, harps and jugs! It’s first in, first served, at the Open Feast so don’t be late. Musicians are welcome to perform 3-4 songs each – a sound technician, drum kit and up-right piano will be provided on the hub bar stage. 7:30pm sign-up, show kicks off at 8pm. A complimentary drink for each performer, and fun prizes.
Archer is an “old-time, sing-song man.” Others note that he’s an “outsider.” He lives out there for sure, somewhere, no fixed address. Born in North Carolina, just short an hour from the Appalachian Mountains, he’s found a roaming home in Australia. He busks, works on farms, labours and, at present, he hails from deep in the Victorian countryside. He plucks guitar, writes and plays country bush blues and every new song from Archer sounds 100-years-old. His music is stripped back, simple and sparse.

CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN COLLECTIVE
CHERRYWOOD
KENNY JOE BLAKE
SKYSCRAPER STAN
Cherrywood’s music features tales of lightning strikes, broken hearts, bar stools and prisons – all brought to life with an array of battered acoustic instruments and a bunch of bar-room vocals. Country and folk music sits harmoniously with their punk and rock ‘n’ roll lineage to give Cherrywood a sound of their own. Their album, Book of Matches , was released in September 2013. Recorded by Matt Duffy (Graveyard Train, The Peep Tempel) and laid down in two days, straight to tape with minimal overdubs and a swaggering live feel.
He writes songs about travel, the desert, women and cars – but mostly about people being people. Having lived in houses, caravans and swags all across Australia, he is able to sing and strum the complexities of humanity into humorous and insightful songs. Kenny’s youth was spent as a “ratbag” in 1960s Preston. One day he picked up the harmonica and after six months of sonic torture it all clicked. He took inspiration from his older brother’s honky-tonk blues record collection and began his travels on a path he never expected.
Wildly entertaining, exceptionally talented and delightfully endearing, Skyscraper Stan is a troubadour rock ‘n’ roll ace with the skinniest legs in the live music scene. You couldn’t compare him to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan or even Paul Kelly but Skyscraper Stan is emerging as a sensational original talent in the Australian folk scene. Honing his skills busking, broke and hungry on the streets of the American Deep South, he has since won over punters in pub band-rooms across this musical Mecca that is Melbourne.
The Christopher Coleman Collective combine folk, pop, blues and rock, to deliver an energetic and emotive show, led by one of Australia’s most charismatic young frontmen. Formed in 2011, the Collective were Unearthed by Triple J in late 2012, earning a spot at the Falls Festival in Marion Bay. The Collective have now released their debut selftitled album to rave reviews, and sold out shows, in Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney and gave a standout performance at Port Fairy Folk Festival 2014.

THE BUSHWHAZEE BUSH DANCE
THE HOUNDLINGS
RUBY BOOTS
THE WILSON PICKERS
Bushwahzee is a Melbourne institution, an enduring band of musicians that began at the Organ Factory in Clifton Hill in 1981. Join Paul Jenkins (singer, dance caller and lagerphone extraordinaire player) and Felix Meagher (fiddle player, songwriter and composer of film scores including Baz Luhrmann’s Australia ) for a Bush Dance Darebin style. BYO boots and spurs.
The Houndlings are a down and dirty female-fronted blues/soul band whose whiskey soaked set-list erupts with greats such as Etta, Elvis, Tina, Tom, Ruth, Ray and Wanda. Featuring Michelle Brisbane (The Sharons, Nice Girls Don’t Spit) on guitar, Kate Clarke on bass, Georgie Ross on vocals and Anthony Shortte (Collard, Greens and Gravy) on drums.
Music found Ruby Boots under rather untraditional circumstances. While working as a deck-hand in pearl fishing, sitting on a houseboat in the Monte Bello Islands off the coast of Western Australia, she found an outlet in between chipping away at pearl shells. Months of isolation on the water, left plenty of time and space for contemplation and composition and eventually, simple clarity gave way to welcomed expression.
After being on hiatus for a few years, while the members have pursued individual projects, The Wilson Pickers were invited to get back together for Music Feast 2014. Comprising four of Australia’s finest singer/songwriters – Andrew Morris, Danny Widdicombe, Sime Nugent and Ben Salter, and one of its most highly sought-after multi-instrumentalists, John Bedggood – they perform original folk and country tunes utilising bluegrass instrumentation and superb five-part vocal harmonies. The group’s obvious kinship, and desire to have a good time, has made them favourites with audiences across the nation.

EMILEE SOUTH
DAVIDSON BROTHERS
Emilee South traverses the globe with her guitar, in pursuit of an endless summer, and draws influence from her three homes – Melbourne, St. Tropez, and Honolulu. 2013 saw her music explode in Honolulu’s underground scene, where she played all the hot venues. With bright, powerful vocals and strong guitar picking, she relays whiskey-infused stories of tropical paradise, young love and small-town guilt, with blues-driven rhythms inspired by the chime of the village church bells.
Having performed together for over twenty years, the Davidson Brothers have carved a niche for their contemporary acoustic style into the Australian music scene. Hamish and Lachlan Davidson grew up in the rural Victorian town of Yinnar. Raised in a musical family, the brothers began playing music and performing from a young age. With seven albums under their belt, they have built a reputation as being one of Australia’s hottest bluegrass acts. They have mastered banjo, fiddle and mandolin and are great entertainers who deliver high-powered acoustic music.

UNBEARABLY HIP BY STEPHEN BLACKBURN
CHARLES JENKINS & THE AMATEUR HISTORIANS
FINE BLUE THREAD CD LAUNCH
Unbearably Hip takes its name from one of the songs in this showcase of all new original material, which tackles a variety of themes that are local, global and universally human. Stephen will use his diverse experience as a comedian/musician to approach topics that other songs generally avoid. The results will be both humorous and poignant. He also promises to steer well clear of musical theatre and the dreaded novelty song format.
Earlier this year, Charles Jenkins enlisted Douglas Robertson and Dave Milne to play at the Leaps and Bounds Festival in July – and thus Charles Jenkins and The Amateur Historians was born. They have played to a great reception on PBS and 3RRR FM. Due to overwhelming demand, a return show is confirmed at Darebin Music Feast. Not only that, they will write and record another collection of songs to be given exclusively to those at the show! This show will sell fast, book early so you don’t miss out.
Fine Blue Thread is an exciting collaboration of three creative musicians – Helen Mountfort (cello), Ria Soemardjo (voice, viola) and Sam Evans (multiple tabla, percussion). This distinctly Melbourne trio, plays finely crafted, fresh and intriguing compositions that are grounded in the traditions of Indian, Javanese and Western classical music. Their music featured on the BBC world music compilation A Beginners Guide to the Music of India , and they have been surprising audiences across Australia with their own original music that is haunting, uplifting and breathtakingly intimate.

Traditional Balkan Folk Music has a long history of continuous evolution, with influences from areas with vastly differing conceptions of music – European and Oriental being amongst the most prominent. This gives it a unique sound of its own which Balkanika reproduces faithfully and beautifully.
Featuring Tim Neal (hammond), Steve Magusson (guitar), Carlo Alberto Canevali (drums), and Mirko Guerrini (saxophone). Tim is well known as a collaborator with eclectic and diverse musicians and his live performances can head in multiple directions at the same time.
UNO showcases three dynamic solo performers – Awomadah Fig growls, soars and whistles with her wah-wah ukulele; Adam Pavitt rocks a funky blend of politically-edged urban blues; and Bec Newman plays moody folk on piano and guitar, with songs of love lost, found and longed for.

DAREBIN ARTS PROGRAMS The City of Darebin has a vibrant arts community and is the home and workplace of a large community of artists. It is one of the most multicultural municipalities in Victoria – over one third of its residents were born overseas. In support of these factors, Darebin City Council has a strong arts focus through its Darebin Arts programs, seeing the arts as essential to increasing community wellbeing and contributing to broader cultural expression.
