FOREWORD Mayor Tim Laurence City of Darebin Welcome to the 2013 Darebin Music Feast, bigger and brighter than ever before. The Darebin Music Feast is an event we here at Darebin City Council are very proud of. It is an opportunity to experience a wide selection of musical styles, get to know our wonderful live music venues, and join in on some musical adventures. In line with our commitment to fostering artists’ development and presentation opportunities and to building community connectedness through the arts, Council has committed additional funds this year for a new curated program. This will assist with the delivery of greater diversity of music projects within the festival, and provides for some exciting new initiatives. The festival’s new hub bar, The Bain Marie, will create a lively setting in the forecourt of Northcote Town Hall to catch up with friends, enjoy a drink and a wide variety of bands. The program features local, touring and interstate talent, workshops and mu4
Ciel Lindley Fuller Festival Director, City of Darebin sic discussion. There is also a series of kidfriendly lunchtime gigs and workshops timed for the September school holidays.
It has been a privilege to take up the reigns as Festival Director for this well-established and long running event.
This year we’re introducing a very special competition for non-professional musicians. The House Hoods is a friendly competition that sees housemates, friends and neighbours become band mates to out-sing and out-play each other for some fun prizes provided by our local business community.
Our curated program and special events will be presented in the new hub bar The Bain Marie and the majestic Northcote Town Hall, in the Town Hall on High program strand. We’re especially thrilled to present the Melbourne premier of Hail to the King, an all-female fronted Elvis tribute with Kira Puru and Mojo JuJu; and Amor Sentimental Música, A Salon for Portuguese Fado and Brazillian Modinha songs of love and fate.
I would like to thank the major sponsors of Darebin Music Feast, including Leader Newspapers, Yarra Trams, Jellis Craig Real Estate, PBS Radio and Beat Magazine for their continued support of this wonderful event. I also thank our supporter partners for the Songwriters' Awards and The Bain Marie for their valued contributions. There are so many different events on at this year’s Music Feast. I recommend you get out and discover the vast array of musical talent we have in our fair city.
The new Street Feast program strand will bring roaming performances, pop-up interactions and Guru DuDu’s famous Silent Disco Walking Tours. This year’s Street Feast feature activation is the newly imagined Banana Island. This colourful space will host the S.S. SingSong Karaoke Caravan, the Go Bananas Buskers and Community Stage, plus a selection of tantalising Food Trucks at the green strip on the corner of Bayview and High.
As always, we acknowledge the dedicated work of our local live music venues and the contribution that they make to this program in the wonderfully eclectic Local Venue Shows program strand. Even in Melbourne it is rare to find so many live music venues in one area, growing, thriving and supporting musicians all year round. Darebin’s cultural life is enriched by our arts and hospitality establishments and it is this cultural backbone that sets us apart, and makes this the wellloved event that it is. I would like to personally thank all the staff, volunteers and community who contribute their creative thinking and hard work each year, especially our extremely talented 2013 design and publicity staff. I hope that you enjoy this year’s program as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

BOGAN BINGO Bogan Bingo is best described (by themselves) as ‘half game show-half party’. It is a game of bingo, but throw in some 80s and 90s rock anthems, DJ and washed up rock star of a bingo caller and you’ll see why Bogan Bingo has sold out every year at Adelaide Fringe for 6 years in a row. Expect to win big, and don’t be shy when called upon for the air guitar comp for bingo party animals who want to rock out that little bit more. As the numbers come up snippets of songs, jokes, group 'shout outs' and air guitar competitions are prompted that make the audience the stars of the show. So jump on the bogan bandwagon, we built it, so you will come!

DAN PARSONS AND HIS BAND The songs of 25-year-old Dan Parsons conjure up images of a seventies West Coast landscape. A natural musician who played the majority of instruments on his gorgeous, self-titled album; he accompanies himself with a deft acoustic guitar style. Playing with his band however, you can expect twin guitar solos, extended jams and driving grooves all set to the everyday triumphs and anxieties of the human experience.

DISCOTHEQUE MUSIC CLUB
ELECTRIC GUITAR CIRCLE WITH KIM SALMON
The Darebin Music Feast special Discotheque Music Club – hosted by DJ DigiDog – will explore the contentious topic of “Cover versions that are better than the Originals”. There are many important issues to be discussed, but this one incites particularly passionate debate! It has been claimed that EVERY Dylan cover is better than the original – could this really be true? Directly from his regular Music Clubs at Pure Pop Discotheque in St Kilda and the White Rabbit Record Hop in Kensington, DJ DigiDog will spin a set of awesome covers to challenge the myth that originals are always the best. Come along and join in the challenge.
Join Kim Salmon for a special Darebin Music Feast produced event where he will share his iconic electric guitar skills with a small group of participants in the festival hub bar on Monday 23 September at 8pm. A select group will plug in and learn grunge and punk rock chords, progressions and licks in this unforgettable group lesson, followed by a Q&A with Kim on his songwriting and new projects. Join our Facebook page and register for updates to find out how you can enter to win a place. Interested parties will need to be 18+, able to bring their own electric guitar and have intermediate skills.

HOUSE HOODS
HOWLIN' STEAM TRAIN
JAMES TEAGUE
Introducing The House Hoods! Where housemates, friends and neighbours are challenged to form a music act and perform at The House Hoods Selection Heats on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 September. Outstanding collaborators will be selected to perform at The House Hoods Finals on Friday 27 September for domestic bliss prize packs. The House Hoods are all about coming together with your community to laugh, sing and be inventive! Acts can be as large a group as our stage can accommodate, can be of all ages and can even include pets! Register your act on the Music Feast website or just come along to watch your mates in your hood shine. Prizes include grocery packs, massage, movie and DVD rental vouchers and more thanks to our local business community.
As the name implies, HOWLIN’ STEAM TRAIN are ragged, relentless, and freakin’ fun. They’re a nice n’ boozy cocktail of rock, soul, boogie and a bunch of other stuff you can’t quite put your finger on. They’ve spent the summer serving it up to big frenzied crowds at Queenscliff, Falls Festival, and Deniliquin Blues & Roots alongside Santana, Steve Miller and Bonnie Raitt. “There are musicians and there are bands. Great bands are the sum of their parts. Great bands are rare. Howlin’ Steam Train is a great band.” - Ed Nimmervoll: long-serving Australian music journalist and observer.
Channelling some of the more inspired moments in the annals of folk, country, blues, psych-rock and pop, James Teague has forged a sound that is remarkably distinctive. His sound is most easily recognised by intricate, dynamic arrangements, unpredictable song-writing and a soaring vocal tremolo. Listen a little closer and you’ll notice the fiercely dexterous finger-picking and crafty, eloquent lyricism. In March 2012, Teague self-released his debut album Lavender Prayers, brimming with brooding contemplation. Yet frivolously whimsical, it showcases his lyrical poetry and shape-shifting voice, complete with mesmeric harmonies and a sonorous blend of instruments. The first track Strange Birds, received significant airplay on Triple J, with an overwhelming response. Teague has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello and Steve Kilbey.

QUARRY MOUNTAIN DEAD RATS Taking it back to a simpler time, where the pickin’ was fast and the banjo was king, this five piece bring their raw & gritty version of bluegrass kicking and hollering into the modern day. Quarry Mountain Dead Rats establish an ‘old mate’ affinity with their audiences while delivering a kick-you-in-the-face live show, setting the tone for a sing along, drink along, footstomping good time. QMDR’s instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, double bass and washboard fits the bluegrass mold, but the influence of old- time mountain-music combined with rock‘n’roll sensibilities, gives way to something altogether different. Revellers are no doubt drawn to QMDR’s humour and anything goes attitude, but what stands out is their ability to tear into their songs with an intensity that’s rare for an acoustic band. THE ROYAL JELLIES
THE STEVENS
THE TIGER & ME
This rabble snaps a hyper-coloured homage to the polyphonic sounds of an era when jazz was king. Modern Melbourne meets New Orleans old school in The Royal Jellies. Frontline horns duke-it-out while the rhythm section cooks up raucous grooves in a neo-vintage stew of pop hooks, trad jazz and straight-up songwriting. Currently touring their new debut album “Burrows St. Poolside”, this consummate eight-piece band delivers a sound that is brash, brassy and infectious; modern-dapper songs textured with horns, Hammond, banjo and stride piano.
The germination of the Stevens began in 2009 when Alex Macfarlane met Travis MacDonald, after moving to Melbourne from the Central Gold-fields Region. After establishing a shared obsession for bedroom recording and favourites such as Wire, Guided by Voices, R. Stevie Moore and Flying Nun releases, they began combining their home projects. Together they started writing songs and soon enlisted the help of Tam Matlakowski and Callum Foley. In 2011 they officially coalesced as a band, and became The Stevens. Macfarlane is notable for playing in such groups as Twerps, Teen Archer, Cut Sick, Breaker Morant and Pets With Pets. In late 2012, Matlakowski and Foley departed, and were replaced by Gus Lord (Boomgates, Teen Archer, Deep Heat) on bass and Matthew Harkin on drums.
Melbourne sextet The Tiger & Me weave a rare mixture of styles and sounds as three lead vocalists exchange and merge tunes from whispered ballad to fevered maelstrom, from charming pop to explosive, dirty rock. In 2012 they signed to ABC Music’s imprint label “Four|Four” (Tim Rogers, Boy in a Box), before collaborating with ARIAnominated producer Steven Schram (Little Birdy, The Cat Empire, Little Red) to create their second full-length album, The Drifter’s Dawn. The Tiger & Me’s ascension to prominence commenced with the release of their critically-lauded debut album From a Liar to a Thief in 2010, which in turn led to breakthrough appearances at Port Fairy and Apollo Bay Music Festivals.

Recorded over two years, this exceptional collection of moving and thought provoking songs were put together with help from master musicians including Je! Lang, Ashley Davies, Ben Franz, Justin Bernasconi & Cat Canteri.
Local Ambience come hot off the press to hypnotize us with their unique and experimental guitarbased instrumental style, already compared to “a wave that parties on through”. Though relative newcomers, they are kicking and swinging their way toward becoming one of Melbourne’s sweetest live acts right before your very eyes.
Willow presents a mix of 60s soul tunes and experimental Berlin inspired electronic to inspire people to get up and dance.

MELODY MOON SINGLE LAUNCH
MIDNIGHT SCAVENGERS
NEW ESTATE CELEBRATE 10 YEARS
NMIT YARRA EDGE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013 – BACHELOR OF MUSIC
Melody Moon is a fresh breeze on the Australian alternative folk scene. Her trio of cello, guitar, double bass and 3-part vocal harmonies have been turning heads this year. Melody’s songs have been broadcast on ABC and community radio across Australia.
The darkly evocative and romantic “spooky rock” of the Midnight Scavengers is supported by the brilliant duo The Quietly Spoken Sons of Lee Marvin: “Our Dads had beards and listened to rock. Our car seats were in V8s or straights, 2 cans and she’ll be right mate.” A night of twisted cowboy tunes and atmospheric rock’n'roll.
Neumusak is excited to present the effervescent New Estate (plus supports), in their 10th year of being a band. Containing ex-Sleepy Township and current Popolice members, the band have released a slew of albums on tastemaker label Chapter Music and become an icon on the Melbourne music scene.
NMIT’s Bachelor of Music Degree will present an evening of love songs. All songs are writen and performed by staff and students from the bachelor program.

NUN OF THE TONGUE
OLIVER MANN
Touch your scalp. Feel that little lump? Garage Rock Pop group Nun of the Tongue put that there. Obey the Dark Space Lord and join their ceremonial EP launch at Bar 303 as part of the Darebin Music Feast along with other special guests.
Oliver Mann is something of an anomaly in the music world. Working across various musical strands and languages, the Melbourne bass-baritone’s output is defined by its adherence to the classical canon as much as its re-imagining. Enjoy his wanderings into arcane folk and experimental song-writing craft in the Northcote Library.

OPA
PLASTERED BASTARD SISTERS
Opa! Bato… “Screaming horns and earthshaking rhythms, Opa! brings the unfettered sound of the Balkans to Melbourne.” This is as close as you will get to the real thing without having to fly half way around the world. You will however be flying for the duration of their shows.
Kylie Brickhill and Libby Dempsey combine inyour-face humour with beautiful harmonies, ukulele and guitar. The Plastered Bastard Sisters have a mile long list of pubs, theatres and festivals they’ve played shocked and rocked across Australia. The duo’s irreverent stage antics and ‘very noice’ singing provide for a guaranteed good time!
