EVENT HANDBOOK BYRON NSW 31 DEC 2013 3 JAN 2014

EMERGENCY information IN CASE OF EMERGENCY 1. Report any emergency or unusual situation to event personnel immediately. 2. Always remain calm and walk rather than run. 3. Keep clear all roads and tracks throughout the festival, campgrounds and car parks for emergency vehicles at all times.

4. Y ou will be kept fully informed through the main stage speakers, loud hailers, super screen and trained personnel. 5. A lways follow instructions from trained personnel and look out for yourself, your friends and others at all times.

FIRE SAFETY A comprehensive Bushfire Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP) has been developed in consultation with NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), State Emergency Service (SES), NSW Police and other members of the Local Emergency Management Committee. These local authorities are on site at all times to keep you safe so you can enjoy the festival. Additionally, the festival is well resourced with water tanks, fire extinguishers and fire marshalls on staff. The Festival is safe because: 1. The Festival is surrounded by a wet environment, meaning a bushfire offsite would have little or no impact onsite. 2. Fuel reduction work has been undertaken (you might notice the low vegetation under the big trees around most of the venue has been removed). 3. The Festival is well resourced with a private fire service, lots of water, equipment and trained personnel.

2

YOU have an important role too: 1. A total fire ban is in place – including camp stoves. 2. G as bottles are not permitted in the camp grounds. Please do not bring with you as there is no where to store them on site. 3. C arefully dispose of cigarette butts and keep your campsite free from rubbish (fire fuel). 4. B ackyard fireworks displays in are illegal in NSW. On the spot fines of up to $1,000 will apply if you are found setting off any fireworks or flares, and you will be removed from the festival. 5. N orth Byron Parklands has invested in an onsite weather station that will provide ample warning of any fires within close proximity of the site. On site resources will keep you safe in the event of any smoke or embers. Most importantly, please listen out and follow the directions of event staff at all times.

WELCOME

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

We’re all here to have a good time, so take a moment to acquaint yourself with the essential rules, tips and services. Toilets: There are a mix of unisex toilets and urinals located throughout the festival and campgrounds. See the map for locations. Showers: Rub-a-dub-dub, we will have outdoor communal cold showers in the campgrounds, so get into the summer spirit and bring your swimmers for these showers. There will also be a small number of hot showers at some of the camp ground locations for the faint hearted. Phone Charging: will be available at the BayFM tent in the event area. Phone Coverage: can be patchy here. Add to that everybody sending new years shout-outs! and you may find it impossible to get your share of bandwidth. If you’re with a group of friends at the festival, organise to meet them at an agreed place and time before splitting up. Switch off and relax. The Info Booth: located at the South Entry. While you’re there check out the goods at the General Store and the fun activities on offer around the region at the Tour Desk. You might be convinced to go kayaking with dolphins or to jump out of a plane (with a parachute!), among other activities! Information Stations: Located throughout the campgrounds, check yo’ map. Manned by appointed Falls sheriffs, these guys are here to help in any way they can, go and say hi. Campground Parishes: Back in the day, land was divided into counties and under that, parishes. Our campgrounds consist of 6 parishes, each having a central Information Station manned by friendly and informative Falls staff members. Check your map for the info icon and go and say hi. General Store: If you forgot to bring something to Falls *facepalm* don’t worry, chances are we have it for you at the General Store! Head there for all your bits-and-bobs. Recycling and rubbish: Help Mother Nature out, sort your recyclables in a clear bag from your rubbish in a black bag. The Falls garbo will be running throughout the camp grounds each day, just like home, except with more regularity. Bags can be left at the Information Stations or along the side of the road. Extra bags can be obtained from the staff manning your parish. Eating: Everyone is a foodie these days, so to keep all of your bellies happy we’ve assembled a great mix of gastronomic delights to tempt you with. Wander ‘round and sample them all.

4

Drinking: We’re a strictly no BYO event, however we have great bars with fair prices. Bars are located at the Amphitheatre Stage, Forest Stage, Brasserie Bar, Ping Pong Pang Bar, Jack Daniels Barrel House and the Kiosk Bars in the north and south camping areas. Wristbands: When you arrive at the entry gates, swap your ticket for a non- transferable wristband. This colourful arm candy is your ticket for the event, so you must keep it on for the entire festival to get in and out of the arenas and stay onsite. LOST OR DAMAGED WRISTBANDS WILL NOT BE REPLACED Buses and getting around: You cannot drive your car in and out if you’re camping at the festival, so if you leave in a vehicle, you won’t get back in. We will have shuttle buses running between the festival, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads from Monday 30th December. You can purchase return bus tickets from the bus ticket window at the onsite bus rank. Walkabout: there is no pedestrian access to or from the site. Use one of the festival shuttle buses if you want explore the local area. RULES & SAFETY No Glass: of any kind, including food or drink packaging. It’s a hazard for people as well as the animals that live here. Total Fire Ban: No BBQ’s, gas bottles, flares, fireworks, sparklers, campfires etc. The NSW Rural Fire Service and event security will be around to keep things cool. No BYO Alcohol: it’s a part of our licensing that allows us to host this amazing event. Always drink plenty of water, watch your drinks and look after your friends. No Recording: sound and visual recordings of the festival are prohibited; still cameras are A-OK - for private use only. If it’s Illegal offsite then it’s illegal onsite. Uniformed and undercover police will be onsite throughout the event, so just do the right thing and you’ll be fine. If you have taken any drugs, please visit First Aid for help keeping safe. No douche bags! This festival is about having fun and making friends, not enemies - so moshing, crowd surfing, stage diving and all manner of unsafe acts are best left at home. Please respect the festival Boundaries and stay within the permitted fenced zones. The internal roads (continued pg 6)

WELCOME

5

WELCOME (from pg 4) must be kept clear for two-way emergency vehicles at all times so please ensure your campsite doesn’t encroach on these pathways. Dam: Swimming in the dam on site is a NO GO. Not only is it very dangerous it is a protected eco-system for wildlife, this is their home all year round. If you need to cool off, splash around in the communal cold showers or catch a shuttle bus and go and check out one of the many beautiful beaches in the area. Slip, Slop, Slap! Protect yourself by wearing a hat, protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen throughout the day - which you’ll find at the info stations thanks to our friends at LeTan. Use Earplugs to protect your hearing. For diabetics and others in need of using Sharps during the event, there are equipment disposal bins at First Aid. Make sure you keep your H2O levels up. Bottled Water is available for purchase from caterers, and our lovely fresh water tanks are nice and full and freely available throughout the site, check the map for water points. Keep In Touch with your friends and familiarise yourself with the lay of the land, including your camping location. We’re all friends at Falls so look after yourself and

others. If you need help, or you see someone who looks like they need help, just ask! The medical team, security and event staff are all on your side and only care about making sure everyone is ok. You’ll find most of them in the main arena and at the Information Stations in the campgrounds. Prevention is better than cure so have fun but pace yourself and try not to over do it. It’s a big festival and best experienced from the outside of the medical centre. For the Drive Home, everyone departs the festival in the morning on Jan 3rd, so be patient and drive carefully. Respect everyone else on the road, especially the local residents. Keys Please will have a kiosk located near the bus ticket office for day-trippers. You can drop your keys into the kiosk to keep them secure, then you can take a voluntary breath test when you pick them up. We suggest you bring a designated driver if you do intend to drive and park for the day. If you’re planning on staying in the North Coast area after or during the festival there is a lot to explore and discover. Make sure you have sorted out your accommodation as it is a popular summer holiday destination. Camping out in your car or otherwise on beaches on roadsides is not allowed. Respect the area and local residents and Falls Festival Byron will continue to thrive.

GREEN BELT It’s not that easy being green but it’s definitely worth the effort. Take a gander at the beautiful grounds that are the beating heart of this great festival. The grass is low, the air is fresh, the animals are happy – which is how we’d like it to stay. Take care of the fields and please leave your campsites as you found them. other general waste in the black plastic bags provided. It’s really important that recycling bags are not contaminated with general waste. There will be garbo runs through out the camp grounds each day, just like home, except with more regularity. Full bags can be left at the Information Stations or along the side of the road. Extra bags can also be collected from the Information Stations. Don’t be a litter bug. En guarde, our fencing is here for a very good reason, to protect the wildlife and flora that lives in the surrounding forest reserves. Please stay within these boundaries. Smells like community spirit! Every year $1 from every ticket sold ($57,000) is donated by the festival to local community projects in Lorne, Byron and Marion Bay. As it is the first year of the festival in Byron we have donated additional funds to Byron Bay’s Safe Summer in The Bay initiative as well as to Crabbes Creek Community Hall.

THE 2013 FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL PERFORMERS This year we’re bringing music of the spheres together, something for everyone. Dip into the artist profiles, plan a schedule, stick to at least half of it and just enjoy your time here. Discovering new bands is half the fun, have a wander.

!!! (CHK CHK CHK)

Busting onto the scene a few years ago with the unstoppable ‘Me and Guiliani Down by the Schoolyard’, these Brooklyn natives have been noisily carving a feel-good niche for themselves, and will return to our shores with a hugely anticipated live show in tow.

ANNA LUNOE

Supporting acts like Lupe Fiasco, Daft Punk, M.I.A and The Chemical Brothers with her strong tribal, two-step garage beats. Her mission is to get the crowd dancing and she succeeds, Lunoe has built a huge reputation for her DJ skills and general lust for life. The perfect way to kick off or wind down your night!

ASTA

Tasmanian songstress & triple j Unearthed High winner Asta has built a reputation for top-notch ethereal pop. With songs like ‘My Heart Is On Fire’ and ‘Escape’ burning up the airwaves, the nation is falling in love with this mind bogglingly young talent.

BIG SCARY

A special breed of ‘stop your car, listen and wait until the back announcer lets you know what that amazing song was’ – that’s Big Scary. Their 2013 album Not Art features tracks like ‘Phil Collins’, ‘Luck Now’ and ‘Harmony Sometimes’, all mini-masterpieces crammed into 3 minutes. On stage they are no less visceral.

BOMBINO

Bombino is an acclaimed guitarist and songwriter from Agadez in Niger. His unlikely musical partnership with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys has taken his incendiary rock and blues to the world. He will be making his maiden Australian voyage this summer!

BONOBO

There are musicians, there are DJ’s and then there is Bonobo. Hailing from Brighton, the man known as Simon Green to his folks has spent the better part of a decade mastering the culmination of precise DJ and electronic work with live band instrumentalism, culminating in this year’s larger than life record The North Borders.

ENTERTAINMENT

BORN RUFFIANS

Toronto’s indie rock trio creates a jaunty mix of shifty guitar riffs and hyper-chic vocals for a Pixies-esque shredded kind of sweetness. The band’s first album, Red Yellow & Blue arrived in spring 2008, they returned with 2010’s Say It and now in 2013, they’ve delivered their fourth studio album, Birthmarks, featuring the single “Needle.”

THE CAT EMPIRE

It may be an oversimplification but The Cat Empire has always been a band created for the singular purpose of making people dance. Harry, Felix and the boys are becoming nothing short of institutions on the Australian festival landscape – they really need no introduction. They’ll get a hell of a reception though.

CHET FAKER

He’s the man with the beard. His beard would give The Beards a run for their beard money. Much more than a hirsute object though, the hairy Melbournite has taken the local and international scene by storm – Faker’s down tempo soul and electronica sounds have seen him gain huge, much deserved popularity.

CRYSTAL FIGHTERS

Crystal Fighters have a unique sound, which, despite their London origins, is steeped in Euro culture. You’ll know their huge hit ‘Love Is All I Got’ and their newest record Cave Rave, which bears even more of that travelling folktronica goodness.

CUB SPORT

At the forefront of an exciting wave of Brisbane pop bands crushing the country in recent times, indie funsters Cub Sport have been spreading the good vibe to all and sundry. Singles ‘Told You So’, ‘Pool’ and ‘Paradise’ have confirmed the Cub Sport kids’ growing reputation as one of our best new exports.

CYRIL HAHN

Gaining notoriety after dropping glacial reverb all over Destiny Child’s ‘Say My Name’, the Swiss-born, Canada-based wunderkind has frisked up everything from HAIM to Solange to the xx – making him one of the most in demand producers on the planet at the moment.

EMMA LOUISE

First stirring us with her stunning debut single ‘Jungle’, this Brisbane native is a rare breed of songstress. Leaving her folk sound behind and unleashing the sublime ‘Boy’ late last year, the single was a precursor to her brilliant debut record Vs Head Vs Heart, which has become a favourite among critics and audiences alike.

LEGENDARY BIG STAGE SOUND

ENTERTAINMENT

FLIGHT FACILITIES

Flight Facilities literally burst onto the scene in 2010 with their massive single ‘Crave You’. They have a hell of a knack for creating chilled out electro numbers like ‘Foreign Language’ and the blissful ‘Clair De Lune’ which, accompanied by a stunning video, landed at number 17 in last year’s Hottest 100.

GOSSLING

As far as highly anticipated Australian albums go, it’d be pretty hard to go past Gossling’s debut album ‘Harvest of Gold’ released this year. With a live show as charming as it is breathtaking – it’s a treat to welcome this young lady of the future back to the Falls stage.

GRIZZLY BEAR

One of the best-loved indie bands on the planet! These Brooklyn natives built a legion of fans with their albums–Yellow House, Veckitamest and Shields. The heady mix of the twin falsetto and tenor vocals of Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen accompanied by woozy atmospherics make Grizzly Bear a peerless proposition.

HANNI EL KHATIB

Describing his music as being tailor made for anyone “who has ever been shot or hit by a train”. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced the San Franciscan’s latest record Head In The Dirt, and Khatib certainly shares that sense of economy and ability to transform a melody into huge energy.

HERMITUDE

One of the undisputed breakout stories of last year was Blue Mountains based hip-hop outfit Hermitude. With their unavoidable single ‘Speak Of The Devil’, its J Award winning clip and finally their Australian Music Prize winning album Hyperparadise.

HORRORSHOW

These dexterous West-Sydney lads known as Solo and Adit have thrived. Horrowshow have moved from strength to strength, blitzing festivals, sold out tours and dominating internationally as they go. King Amongst Many is the title of the new record and it’s completely accurate.

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW

With a sound both timeless and modern, Irishman James Vincent McMorrow landed on Australian radars with last year’s enthralling album Early In The Morning and its stunning single ‘If I Had A Boat’. His songs pack sweet-as-honey falsettos and lyricisms that have you literally hanging on every next word.

ENTERTAINMENT

THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS

One of Australia’s best indie bands right now are the lads from Brisbane, The John Steel Singers. Their new album ‘Everything’s A Thread’ is filled with Afro-pop basslines; choppy power pop guitarsand-drums; Eno-esque weirdness; high, boys-on-the-beach vocal lines and dance moves reminiscent of Manchester’s late ’80s E-peak.

JOHNNY MARR

Finding fame with his experimental and downright game changing guitar work and song writing for The Smiths, Johnny Marr has become one of popular music’s greatest innovators to strap on a 6 string. Playing songs from both The Smiths and his debut solo album The Messenger, don’t miss this one!

THE KITE STRING TANGLE

The experimental solo project of alternative electronic artist and producer, Danny Harley, launched in May 2012, The Kite String Tangle venture is a seamless blend of ethereal pop through to the darker shades of ambient, electronic music. Gaining huge props and radio play on triple j right now.

LONDON GRAMMAR

‘Wasting My Young Years’, the debut single from London Grammar is one of those rare pieces of music with the ability to stop you dead in your tracks. It comes from their critically acclaimed debut album If You Wait which has seen their popularity on our shores sky-rocket.

LUNATICS ON POGOSTICKS

New South Wales based rapscallions Lunatics on Pogosticks live up to their wacky name with an equally unhinged sound. Taking cues from bands like Dune Rats and Bleeding Knees Club these impossibly young troublemakers deal in garage pop noise with a healthy dose of infectious melody thrown in for good measure.

MGMT

After charming all and sundry with their debut album Oracular Spectacular and subsequent classics like ‘Kids’ and ‘Electric Feel’, they took an epic left turn with 2010’s mind bending Congratulations. MGMT, everyone’s favourite space nerds, are now back with a new self-titled album and a whole new set of tricks!

NEIL FINN

What is there to say about Neil Finn that hasn’t already been said? Very little. The man is a musical institution, as the lead man of Crowded House, Split Enz and more! He’s coming to the Falls stage with solo works and past hits that will keep you singing and dancing.

22

ENTERTAINMENT

OLIVER TANK

At the forefront of Australia’s thriving electronic scene, 23 year old Sydneysider Oliver Tank has made a name for himself with his deft, blissed out glitch pop. Citing the likes of James Blake and Bon Iver as influences, Oliver released his debut EP Dreams to amazing reviews all over the globe.

THE PAPER KITES

No doubt you will have heard one of their sublimely hushed tunes on the wireless – whether it be ‘Woodland’ from their debut EP, ‘Maker of My Time’ from it’s follow up Young North, or their debut long player States which is simply stunning.

POND

Riding high on the wave of crazy excess afforded by Beard Wives Denim, their breakout album of last year, WA psychedelic devotees Pond are back with Hobo Rocket. First single ‘Xanman’ is a classic piece of chunky guitar riffery, resplendent with Nick Allbrook’s now signature wail.

POTATO POTATO

Emerging from the North Coast of NSW, these four prodigies deal in folk pop inspired by the likes of Mumford and Sons and Fleet Foxes. Their spot on four part harmonies and lilting melodies have seen Potato Potato appear at festivals like Splendour in the Grass and Byron Bay Blues and Roots.

THE PREATURES

Sydney-siders The Preatures just make everything look so easy – whether it be their cool-as-fuck on stage swagger, their retromodern acid wash video clips or their girl-boy will-they-or-won’tthey vocal styles. And the songs! Dear God the songs! ‘Is This How You Feel’, ‘Take A Card’ and more. Don’t miss.

QUESTLOVE DJ SET

Questlove DJ Set. Those three words alone are probably all you need to get your skates on. The man is a legend – working with The Roots for the last two decades, AhmirKhalib Thompson has single handedly defined cool. Known for his gravity defying afro and laid back style, this set is totally unmissable. Also playing at the Jack Daniels Barrel House.

THE ROOTS

The thinking man’s hip-hop act, led by the unmistakable afro of ?uestlove and ably assisted by the likes of Black Thought, Kamal Gray and Damon ‘Tuba Gooding Jnr’ Bryso.
