Rip and Shred We ripped and tore a pair of Dr Denim My Boys to create the best worn-out jeans you've ever slipped into.

DIY AND STYLING TABATHA TURNER

Photography Sara D’Ambrosio

DIY WITH DR DENIM

METHOD:

01. Research images of ripped jeans to help you navigate around your fresh pair. 02. After you have decided where your rips will be placed, use a pencil to mark the areas with short horizontal lines about 1.5cm apart. This will help you achieve a ‘shredded’ effect. 03. Place a piece of cardboard under the area you will be cutting.

YOU'LL NEED:

06. To achieve a ripped effect, repeat the pencil process and cut one singular line along the area you wish to be ripped. You can pull some of the horizontal white threads out to make a frayed effect, or leave them freshly cut. 07. Using a razor blade, ‘shave’ the jeans along the seams, pockets, belt tabs and hems, roughing up the jeans to get your desired effect. A stanley knife can also be used to rip along these seams.

04. With a stanley knife, cut along the horizontal lines you have marked, then slowly start to pull the threads vertically with the body out (leaving only the white horizontal threads).

08. Put jeans in the washing machine and dryer. This is an integral part of the process as it will roughen, fray and perfect the shreds and rips.

05. Repeat this process on all of the areas you wish to be shredded.

09. Wear the jeans, rock the jeans, be the jeans. They will only get better with age!

Creative Collective Melbourne Spring Fashion Week is all about showcasing the best our local designers have to offer. At the heart of this year’s festival is Creative Collective, a week-long exhibition and marketplace which will act as a hub for all things home-grown design. Not only will Creative Collective exhibit to the public, there will also be a series of workshops for emerging designers and retailers held by some of Melbourne’s industry leaders. Melbourne favourites Habbot, Pageant, Limedrop and AMXander will all be exhibiting, so we decided to pick their minds to get an insight into their upcoming showcases. LIMEDROP Designer: Clea Garrick. Name of your SS16 collection? It is simply SS16. I stopped naming my collections a little while ago. I like to let the audience make up their own mind about my collections. Sum up your collection three words: Light, flowing, fun. Inspiration behind your current collection? We have taken a modern look at '70s free flowing silhouettes and made lots of mix-and-match pieces that can fit into any wardrobe. The best thing about being a designer in Melbourne? I love the abundance of good coffee and cool weather to wear lots of clothes. What’s unique about your label? Limedrop is all about FUN and believing anything is possible. We take an upbeat approach to design while focusing on precision in all the details. Favourite Melbourne retailer or place to shop? I am a fan of A-Esque leather bags and accessories. Amanda Briskin designs fun pieces that are handcrafted in their Melbourne workshop. I respect the mix of playfulness and amazing quality. Favourite thing about Melbourne culture? The idea that Melburnians embrace their own style. The confidence to wear what looks good and style it into your own wardrobe. Your favourite hangouts in Melbourne? Melbourne’s open parks. It is lovely to observe the changing seasons in the Fitzroy Gardens and to see the ducks in the lake at the Carlton Gardens. limedrop.com.au

16

PAGEANT Designers: Amanda Cumming and Kate Reynolds. Name of your SS16 collection? Splash. Sum up your collection three words: Fresh, playful, relaxed. Inspiration behind your current collection? The bare female form with a fantasy vacation in mind. The best thing about being in Melbourne? Coffee, food and the creative communities. What’s unique about your label? Pageant is known for pushing the boundaries through our use of unusual fabrication, colour palette and broad pop culture references. Favourite place to shop? Mr Kitly, Monk House Design, World Food Books, Dot Comme and Shifting Worlds. Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? The music and art scenes here are very influential to our design process. We always reference a mix of the ‘everyday’ and our collection encompasses a genuine expression of our interests and obsessions at the present moment. Who is your style icon? Banoffee (aka Martha Brown). We are currently working on our next capsule collection collab with her. wearepageant.com

OPENS FRIDAY AUGUST 28 AT 10AM LOCATION 1000 POUND BEND MELBOURNE.VIC.GOV.AU/MSFW

HABBOT Designer: Annie Abbott. Name of your SS16 collection? Suitcase. Sum up your collection three words: Take a trip. Describe your current collection: It’s about taking a step away from the everyday and into a more colourful, fun and free space. The styles are classic yet the materials unexpected which is typical of Habbot. It also reminds us that the most unexpected experiences often bring the greatest pleasure. What’s unique about your label? The materials I make my shoes from are generally reserved for small borders or trims on shoes, but I love going all out and using them as the main event. Favourite place to shop? At the moment I am finding myself in Bassike, Cos and Limedrop (for crazy socks), all pointing down to a big, bold, happy shoe ending! Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? I think Melburnians generally love good tailoring, so I pay a lot of attention to the small details when designing my shoes. Even though I love to make unexpected material choices, the shoes need to be finished really well. Who is your style icon? Jenna Lyons. habbotstudios.com

Designer: Jason Pang. Name of your SS16 Collection? Gears. Sum up your collection in three words: Texture, rebellious, embroidery. Inspiration behind your current collection? Defying classic sartorial styles and rebellious shifts in menswear of the '60s, the counterculture era otherwise known as the Peacock Revolution. The best thing about being a designer in Melbourne? Being able to work and exchange experiences with people from all over the world. What is unique about your label? Being a contemporary menswear label here in Melbourne. There are not many local labels that do what we do. We are a breath of fresh air, especially in the menswear field. Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? Melbourne exhibits strong Scandinavian sensibilities in its style DNA. It’s hard not to integrate this into what I do as I have a strong love for our multicultural city. Some people have said that my work looks like ‘clean’ streetwear and I can see how this is influenced by my direct surroundings. Who is your style icon? There are a range of people I look up to when it comes to style, including male model Park Sung Jin and music producer turned style icon Pharrell Williams. amxander.com

Shooting Hoops It’s clear The Rubens are men of action. With over 120 shows under their belt, they have just kicked off their mammoth 22-show national tour with Splendour in the Grass. Regardless of their impressive tour roster, they still get their fair share of pre-show jitters and nerves. “I’m nervous talking about it,” admits Sam. “We’ve got a whole lot of songs we haven’t played in front of people now, so it’s like we’ve got to really go back and do it all again. And better.” Although daunted, The Rubens do not subscribe to superstitious pre-show rituals or lucky charms. These guys opt for a good dose of boozy lubrication and brotherly love. “Before we go on, we do a group huddle and give a kiss on the cheek around the circle.” The shows will feature a new look and polished feel for the band. Self-described as somewhere between Tame Impala’s casual ‘undoneness’ and the Arctic Monkey's sharp tailored aesthetic, The Rubens promise a cohesive, sleek and thematic show based on their luxe album art.

BY MEL ODY AC H I

From Menangle to Manhattan, The Rubens have an origin story worthy of a rock‘n’roll fairytale. Inspired by their parents' formidable record collection, and the sheer boredom of their post-high school sojourn, the Margin brothers and friend Scott Baldwin decided to start a band.

Four years on, the unsuspecting lads experienced domestic and international success with their certified platinum self-titled debut. It saw them team up with legendary New York producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Strokes, Lana Del Rey). Despite some time out of the spotlight, the quintet has returned with a vengeance. Their sophomore album, Hoops, is out this month and boasts the bluesy, soulful, stamp-your-feet brand of rock‘n’roll we have come to expect from The Rubens. Brimming with maturity and innovation, their sound has undergone an evolution of sorts during the last three years and showcases a marked understanding of their strengths. “We haven’t gone and overcomplicated things on this record,” muses Sam Margin. “It’s still condensed and still heavily structured but we just made a point of writing more to our strengths. Trying to make each song more interesting by adding different parts and elements.”

spent on the road, and are punctuated by boozy nights and the crooner’s must-have narrative ingredient, love. From one-night stands to heartbreaks, the band explores the life cycles of relationships. But don’t expect these twenty somethings to write about ‘Tinder romance’ or digital dating.

“With us, it’s a conscious effort to make it a bit of a theme. We wanted to make the show, the lighting, what we wear, much more striking and professional, to signal a difference between both albums.” As purveyors of charismatic, confident and soulful rock‘n’roll, The Rubens’ Hoops tour is guaranteed to deliver timeless rock anthems. As for who they would shoot one-on-one hoops with? After some deliberation between Shaquille O’Neal for his role in ’90s classic, Shazaam, to Danny DeVito for his height and humour, Sam and Elliott agreed that US President Obama would be their choice candidate. “It would be awesome if he dunked over you and he did something cool! Lets go with Obama!”

“I think it's laziness,” the brothers agree. “I guess it seems to me that romance is almost dead thanks to that. There’s nothing romantic about [meeting online] in my own opinion. But Tinder, being aimed at young people... it seems like people need to go out and realise what the game is about before they start doing that. If you’re 18 years old and all you know is Tinder then you will have no game!” The

Alas, you won’t be finding the Rubens on Tinder, but we can rest assured that IRL romance can’t be dead if guys like this still exist.

Elliott adds, “I cant imagine kids from our area, that were groomed on Tinder, trying to have some sort of conversation in some kind of normal relationship setting. It builds character getting turned down and you can’t just keep swiping on people in real life.”

Girl Talk Elliphant (Ellinor Olovsdotter from Sweden) and MØ (Karen Marie Ørsted from Denmark) kicked some serious goals at Splendour in the Grass. We sat down with them to talk Spice Girls, Eurovision, local music scenes and overmedication.

BY ARIANNA L UC E N TE

How did you guys become friends and collaborate for ‘One More’? Elliphant: We met on Facebook first. I read so much about her and when I saw her ‘Pilgrim’ video I was like, “I fucking love that girl!” We realised we had the same booker and video director. It just morphed and everything got great. I never met her in Denmark. MØ: No and I don’t think I met you in Sweden. We met in LA and London and just different places. I feel very close to you even if we don’t see each other that much. Elli sent me the ‘One More’ track that she did with Joel Little and I recorded my vocals. I was so keen on the song. Elliphant: She sent it back in two days. So professional. You’re both Scandinavian artists that sing in English. Why? Elliphant: Sweden has a pop history of Englishspeaking bands like ABBA and Ace of Base but if you really want to earn money in Sweden, you should sing in Swedish. The Swedish music scene is huge, especially soul and hip-hop.

MØ: It’s the same in Denmark. They pay you shitloads of money for tours. I started writing songs in English because of the Spice Girls. They were my first crush. I’ve been in a punk band and we sung in Danish but I write my own songs in English. It’s just natural. Elliphant: I don’t know how to express myself in Swedish. It’s weird. My singing isn’t 100 per cent English either. It’s inspired by the Swedish language, Jamaican Patois and the American hip-hop scene. It doesn’t have to be grammatically correct. I really want to be provocative with language. You can deliver a very dusty, boring word in a very creative way. For example, “love”. How boring is that fucking word? MØ: But you can make it amazing or you can spoil it. How do you feel about Eurovision? Elliphant: Sweden wins it every time. It used to be cool when you had to sing in your national language but now it’s just about making really shitty EDM music. The whole idea is to bring Europe together with music though, which is nice. MØ :It doesn’t have the same glamour.

Favourite Spice Girl? Elliphant: Sporty Spice of course! I called her Junkie Spice. I don’t know why... But I was never that interested in the Spice Girls. I was more into TLC. But it was a genius concept. MØ Yeah with all the characters! I liked Ginger Spice. The reason I liked Geri was because I didn’t have boobs at the time and she had big boobs! During your set at Splendour, you started talking about ADD and overmedication. What were you referring to? Elliphant: I was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and everything else imaginable when I was 19. I finished school in the eighth grade so I don’t have any degrees. Right now we are feeding kids drugs so early because they’re supposed to sit still in school. If I take pills, I get high as fuck. What advice would you give your younger self? MØ: Try to believe in yourself a bit more and be confident. But that’s something that comes with age. You just want to fit in when you’re young but embrace your flaws.

Elliphant is releasing her debut album Living Life Golden on September 25. elliphant.com

Hello, Hello We hate to state the obvious, but there was a pretty stellar line-up at this year’s Splendour in the Grass. Between international heavyweights and long-time local favourites, an emerging crop of fresh talent left us seriously impressed. So we decided to pull a few of our fave cool kids from the Red Bull Music Academy line-up for a chat. We played a few quick fire rounds of ‘Getting to Know You' with the artists and quickly learnt a little too much about them. Including that the Total Giovanni boys like to pee together. They call it the ‘commurinal’ and we’re still not sure if they were joking.

TOTAL GIOVANNI Our life motto is… CDK. The meaning of which can never be elaborated upon, but it has private meaning. And always bring a bag. Our bad habit is… eating chicken. Grilled, steam, fried, sautéed. It’s a great bird. The naughtiest thing we’ve ever done is… when I was a kid I stole all the mail in every letterbox and burnt it. No one knows this but we… all wee together. It’s communal. We call it the commurinal. Our most used emoji is… We don’t really use emojis. We’re a bit highly evolved for emojis, we’re too emotional. Our favourite designer is… Peter Jackson. You can wear the suits to sleep they’re that comfy.

22

KLO For breakfast I eat… Weet-bix and cereal on top, then I microwave it. It’s a special cereal my brother bought. My life motto is… if you don’t try, you can’t fail. No one knows this but I… sometimes go to hip-hop class. My favourite designer is… PAI. On my bucket list… travel more. I want to play in Asia. Japan would be cool. The best live act I’ve ever seen is… Sigur Rós. My most used emoji is… I always do the sneaker. Music is… an outlet. I secretly love… do I admit this? A Playstation game called Kingdom Hearts.

I’m happiest when I… am surrounded by nature, in the river. I want… to live to my full potential and create to my potential. Music is… everything. No one knows this but I… am obsessed with black tahini. Actually everybody knows that. My life motto is… anything’s good if you decide it is. My favourite designer is… I love Alexander McQueen. On my bucket list… to see Björk. My most used emoji is… probably the lightning bolt. My spirit animal is… a spider. The naughtiest thing I’ve ever done is… ripped out speakers at a party because they were playing Queen.

For breakfast I eat… I had an açai bowl this morning. My life motto is… get shit done. My favourite designer is… I really do love Romance Was Born. On my bucket list… I want to touch a lion. Or just have a lion friend and snuggle with a lion. The best live act I’ve ever seen is… I’m a sucker for Fat Freddy’s Drop. They always get me. My spirit animal is… my friends call me baby giraffe. I stack it all the time. Music is… it’s so lame, but heart and soul. For me it’s life.

Mum always says that I… she actually called me incorrigible the other day. But I think she meant it as a compliment. For breakfast I eat… I’ve got this really great Nutribullet thing and if you freeze bananas, it’s like ice cream. My life motto is… no worries. My bad habit is… telling everyone everything. On my bucket list… Kenya. The Pyramids. Rome. The best live act I’ve ever seen is… Grace Jones. It was extraordinary. My most used emoji is… The 100% and the crying laughing one. My spirit animal is… a werewolf. I want… some food right now. Music is… can I say music has? The capacity to transform.

FJ

JMSN My life motto is… do it. My bad habit is… drinking, probably. I don’t consider it bad though. The naughtiest thing I’ve ever done is… oh no. Oh no, I can’t say that. I could go to jail or something… I also set a truck on fire once. No one knows this but I… have had my name legally changed three times. And I don’t wear socks. Or underwear. The best live act I’ve ever seen is… Sigur Rós. And I saw Prince, but he didn’t play any of the songs I like. My most used emoji is… those big eyes. My spirit animal is… a whale. Music is… life.

Self Help Is the selfie the downfall of humankind as we know it?

The ‘I Woke Up Like This’ selfie

The after-sex selfie

You didn’t wake up like that.* We know, and you know we know. Your boyfriend knows. He saw you before you snuck off to the bathroom, only to tiptoe back in and pretend you were still sleeping. Stahp.

As if it’s not already enough pressure to avoid an embarrassing sex face during the act, now you have to look perfectly tousled post coitus? I have a sneaking suspicion I can apply the ‘people who take photos’ wisdom here too. What a second-round boner killer.

The famous-person selfie

The funeral selfie

No, FYI, the fame doesn’t rub off on you when you get a selfie with a Big Brother starlet. That stench of desperation that you have, however, does rub off onto your photo feed.

Srsly tho.

The business class selfie This also includes the business lounge selfie. Ugh. It is one thing to be excited about an upgrade and post about said upgrade. In this case, post 100x *excited face* with free champers. And free sandwiches. And extra leg room. And smiling flight attendants. It’s quite another thing to pretend you’re totes chill as you ‘accidentally’ highlight your seat number while posing with your (real) glass of sparkles. As many a rich person has said before, people who always fly business class don’t take photos of themselves flying business class.

S

elfies. Love ’em or hate ’em, they’re fast becoming the cornerstone of our virtual lives ± but does the selfie really spell the downfall of polite culture? I say yes. And I’m not even over 35. Don’t believe me? Well, not only has science now definitively proven that selfies are the absolute worst, but in a more accurate and science-y way, they have linked a higher rate of selfies to narcissism and psychopathy. Yep, that’s right. Every selfie you post takes you one step closer to Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. Crotch selfie imminent...

SHUDDER.

B Y B I A N C A O' N E I L L

"Still an advocate of the selfie? Still think it’s an amazing way to share your experiences with the world around you?"

And anyway, you’ll never out-selfie the selfie master Kim K, so what’s the point? She’s made a cool wad of cash selling a hard cover version of her Instagram feed. The Bookseller’s features editor Tom Tivnan said the book was “landmark publishing, a cultural touchstone, the Catcher in the Rye of the Instagram generation.” If you didn’t agree with me before, surely you have to now. This is the sheer downfall of humankind, summed up in a single sentence. To prove my point, let’s investigate some of the most popular and often talked about selfie categories that our appalling generation has spawned… And why they up the #ew factor.

The homeless-person selfie There are two types that fall into this category and I can’t work out which one is more evil. There’s THAT guy, who thinks it’s funny to be all like ‘LOL, look at this homeless person.’ In this case, I hope they end up there someday too and the homeless guy recognises them. But perhaps even worse, there’s the type that gives a homeless person a couple of bucks and wants to #humblebrag about how they helped someone. Word of advice: it’s not charity if you have to prove to the world you’re doing it.

Still an advocate of the selfie? Still think it’s an amazing way to share your experiences with the world around you? Girl, you can’t deny this overwhelming flood of evidence to the contrary. Selfies aren’t just incredibly un-chill, they are an embarrassing blight on the historical account of peeps in the 21st Century. We’re totally going to regret those #sexselfies in 100 years time when historians are all like ‘gross’. Oh, humankind, things are looking pretty grim. Now excuse me while I take a photo of myself holding up this article with the hashtags #publishedagain #blessed <3 *Beyonce excluded.

04 Jerri Jones

Named after Salvador Dalí’s wife, Gala Apparel aims to promote the surreal and unique work of the historically renowned artist. Since the Perth-based label’s launch in 2013, it has expanded from its humble beginnings in streetwear. Gala now runs events to showcase its clothing alongside Dalí’s artwork and live music. Working closely with photographer Cody Roberts at Curbside Collection, Nicole Filev admits to obsessing over three loves in life: art, music, and fashion. She incorporates surrealism and eccentricity into every garment, photoshoot and design she creates. When the focus lies on being different, Gala Apparel delivers. www.galaapparel.com.au

After travelling Mexico and studying art in Spain, Chloe Tozer was inspired to create her label, C L O jewellery. In her studio, Chloe lets simplicity, clarity of form and minimalism define her work. Using recycled sterling silver, she blurs the lines between sculpture and fine jewellery, which makes each handcrafted creation utterly unique and able to be customised to fit the wearer. Her debut collection draws on the Bauhaus art movement and sees her pieces move in flowing shapes and act as sculpture to a body, much like architecture to land. clojeweller y.com

It’s official. Crystals are making a comeback. And leading the way is Australian label, Stoned Crystals, with a fresh and modern take. Crystals have long been used to create Zen within oneself and the spaces around us, yet Founder Ashley Bellino felt they’d been boxed in as ‘hippie’. Understanding the power of the crystal, Ashley sought to make them more accessible and suitable for the home. And so Stoned Crystals was born. The label is helping facilitate the comeback of crystals through modern, fresh and beautiful crystal decor. Their inaugural Geo Gems collection consists of five geometric crystals, each with powerful healing benefits www.stonedcr ystals.com

Combining a minimal aesthetic that focuses on fine details, Jerri Jones works to create bold, staple pieces for all wardrobes. Ms Jones debuted her namesake label in 2014 to strong reception, and it’s not hard to see why. Reimagining dependable classics, each Jerri Jones garment exudes premium quality and forges a path away from trend-focused, disposable fashion. Instead, the Melbourne label is making its own path in the fashion world, rediscovering the importance of simplicity. These are pieces worth adding to your wardrobe. jerrijones.com.au

MLR creates jewellery that is forever evolving. Each sculptural piece displays expressive, eclectic and dream-like qualities, which reflect the thoughts of creative designer, Marie-Lauren Romano. Drawing inspiration from hidden details, curved forms and the simplicity of texture, the results are organic and slightly unpredictable. Marie-Lauren’s design process is testament to an experimental ideal, resulting in imperfect yet appealing designs. Within each piece you’ll find a little Melbourne culture, a little dream-like motif, some surface design and many tactile elements (including their signature stippling detail). It’s these elements that lie at the heart of MLR. mlrcreate.com

When it comes to accessories, Rooster’s Rook likes to challenge creativity, with a range of timber clutches that are handmade in Melbourne. What began as an idea in the middle of the night, is now a reality for the label’s duo, making innovative design, ecological sustainability and a striking organic aesthetic their prime focus. Sharlon and Joanne bring a unique set of skills to the creative process, envisioning a collection that is both functional and surprisingly lightweight. Hues range from warm reds and deep browns to light blondes, and the intricately-crafted wood designs are complemented by a selection of side panels. There’s metallic (gold, silver and copper), black, white acrylic or natural timber. Beautiful. roostersrook.com.au

It’s hard to look past the beauty of nature when seeking inspiration. So it makes sense that Melbourne-based Portuguese designer, Manuela Igreja, is inspired by just that. With a background in mathematics, Manuela uses jewellery to explore the organic forms, textures and geometry that surround us in our day-to-day. For her current collection, she has studied the shape and texture of botanical plants and seeds native to in Melbourne. She has also sought inspiration in her Fitzroy studio, experimenting with texture and shape through carving. The result? Jewellery that’s organic in its form and elegant in its simplicity. manuelaigreja.com

Free-spirited and ever-inspired, Novella-Ria creates jewellery for wanderers with effortless style. With its name derived from the goddess Rhea, who in ancient mythology is the daughter of the earth goddess, this gypsy -inspired range is all about love and spirit. Designer Elise ensures the brand’s focus is on bohemian simplicity, creating stunning pieces from natural materials such as crystals, healing stones, leather and mixed metals. More than just recycled paper, Paper Saver is a notebook for you to re-use. Again. And again. And again. Put simply, it’s a seriously sophisticated faux-leather outer with space for you to refill with your old printed paper. It was first designed by young Melbourne architect, Jon Yong, who grew tired of seeing printouts become obsolete almost as soon as they came off the printer, still warm. Eight years later, and Yong is still using his handmade Paper Saver. With room for A4 or A3 sized paper, a fold of 360 degrees and starting at a tiny $20, this is the last notebook you’ll ever need. Really. papersaver.com.au

Notely believes that even the smallest spark of an idea can change the world (as long as you write it down in the middle of the night). Even in this digital age, they understand that paper is a vital, magical part of the creative process, so long as it’s sustainable. Notely’s eco-friendly notebooks are made and printed in Australia on entirely FSC-certified paper. Their softcovers, made from 100% recycled office paper, create a vibrant white canvas to sketch, plan, dream and jot. The vibrant Artist Collection features designs from local illustrators and artists, and brand new Notely Spirals boast stunning brass binding and copper foil on the cover. notely.com.au

In short, they’re pretty special. oliveandthevolcano.com

Take a cliché and trash it. That’s Able and Game. Offering cards and stationery that are a little more witty than your average, Able and Game is a go-to for your best friend’s birthday. The label mixes awkward illustration, cultural references, dry humour and modern design with A+ results. It’s been running for over six years, led by husband and wife duo Gareth Meney and Anna Blandford. All cards are made locally in Brunswick and inspired by the couple’s two cats, Bubsy and Cricket, who were strays until the pair tamed them outside their office. Cute, quirky, colourful. Those three words best describe Melbourne label, Coocachuu. Millie Hall knows how to give a present with the wow factor. The artist slash graphic designer specialises in print design and has blessed us with a selection of celebration cards... if that’s what you call them. Each has a humourous, crude or even slightly squeamish twist, with options including a ‘breast friends’, ‘urine my heart’, or ‘I’m nuts about you’ card. It’s not hard to guess the illustration on that last one. Each hand-drawn, watercolour artwork will make a memorable occasion for all involved, but maybe you should stick to the newsagency for grandma’s birthday card. etsy.com/shop/MillieHallShop

Card & Caboodle cares about what is on-trend in the stationery world. Since the brand’s beginning, the importance of drawing a visual alliance between fashion and stationery has been at the forefront. Offering a wide range of products that include cards, wrappings, gifts and journals, Card & Caboodle source both locally and internationally. They offer cards for almost every special occasion you can think of, as well as lots of gorgeous art cards to frame and savour. Card & Caboodle is packed to the rafters with all your gift-giving needs.

At Little Peach Co, greeting cards and invitations have become much more than simple writing on a piece of paper. Specialising in vintage printing, each of their handcrafted items is created with a love and passion for antique processes. The result is uniquely-customised stationery and individual stationery sets, with a vintage style and distinctive personality. Every piece designed by Little Peach Co is handcrafted in-house using their 1965 Heidelberg Platen Press, affectionately named Bertha. In the digital age, creating textured and detailed paper pieces is not only nostalgic, but completely lovely too. Little Peach Co aims to last as a lifelong reminder of your celebrations.

Studio

Who doesn’t love doodling? Substellar Studio lives for it. The cute online Etsy store sells witty, pun-tastic cards to help you express yourself to loved ones, without sounding awkward, soppy or boring. There is nothing lacklustre about a smiley, walking pizza slice confessing ‘You’ve stolen a pizza my heart’. Nor a delightful pasta character admitting ‘I am tortellini in love with you. ’ The handmade cards are made out of recycled paper, with the addition of glitter bringing a little extra flair. This is what you send to the one you can’t ‘espresso’ your love for. etsy.com/au/shop/SubstellarStudio

ELEVEN Australia x Style for Life Day Hair styling met philanthropy on July 26 when 55 salons Australianwide gave the day’s proceeds to not-for-profit orginisation, Hagar. In its third year, Style for Life Day is an event initiated by ELEVEN Australia and Hagar in the fight to end slavery in Cambodia, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The funds raised will go towards restoring the lives of women and children who have survived severe human rights abuse. By providing a skill such as hairdressing, women are given the power of independence and a second chance at life. This year’s event ambassadors included Oscar-winning actress Rachel Griffiths, ELEVEN Australia’s co-creative director Joey Scandizzo, ABC 774’s Libbi Gorr and Collingwood Football Club’s Travis Cloke. Napoleon Perdis Foundation Stick Porcelain This month sees make-up genius Napoleon Perdis launch a new product, Foundation Stick Porcelain. Gone are the days of heavy, cakey foundation sticks. This is a new-gen product that’s light but blendable. Loaded with key ingredients including aloe extract and vitamin C, Foundation Stick Porcelain offers broad spectrum SPF 15 and doubles as a great concealer. It’s also free of nasties such as parabens, ensuring your skin is treated to the best make-up technology on the market. Napoleon says: 1. Apply a small amount of the Foundation Stick to the back of your hand and using a firm foundation brush such as Artist Foundation Brush 19b buff into the skin, starting at the feature focus area and blend out towards the edges of the face. 2. Foundation Stick doubles as an excellent concealer. Use any small Napoleon Perdis brush and pat on any areas of discolouration that remain after foundation application. 3. Set foundation to prevent shine by pressing Camera Finish CloseUp Complexion Powder over the T-zone. napoleonperdis.com

COCO AND THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

PORTRAITS OF THE WORLD'S MOST STYLISH WOMEN

READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO TAKE GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS OF PEOPLE

Annemarie Van Haeringen

David Downton

Henry Carroll

Fashion history is never quite as easy to digest as when it's in picture book format. And so the complex history of Coco Chanel comes best delivered as a children’s book. Coco and the Little Black Dress is a kidfriendly biography about the life and transformative origins of legendary designer, Coco Chanel. It follows her childhood living in an orphanage, her design inspiration and how her ability to challenge trends led to a legacy. Each page is beautifully illustrated and like all children's books, the moral of the story is evident. It also teaches Chanel’s value in the importance of comfort and the beauty of simplicity. Cute.

There’s no doubt David Downton is one of the world’s best fashion illustrators of all time. Cementing his reputation for over a decade, Downton is renowned for his ability to capture a woman’s beauty in just a few careful strokes. It’s actually quite incredible. So bringing his works together in a single hard-cover book just screams 'bestseller'. Portraits of the World’s Most Stylish Women exhibits some of Downton’s best work. Subjects range from the new school of Victoria’s Secret Angels to industry greats such as Jerry Hall, Amanda Harlech and Joan Collins, and are accompanied by little insights into most meetings. More than just visually captivating, it also guarantees a good read.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but it’s kind of hard not to when the book is about photography. Or anything visual really. So it’s lucky that Read This if You Want to Take Great Photographs of People passes this test. Because what lies inside is gold. As its name so subtly suggests, the book helps guide you through what it takes to snap really good photos of people. Turns out it’s less about the hard-and-fast rules of photography and more about mood, personality and gut feeling. Which is really a blessing for the less technical of us whose portraits rely on iPhone cameras and Instagram. Say 'cheese'.

Beach House

Little Boots

Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique

There's a certain dizzy dreaminess to Beach House's music that you just can't seem to find anywhere else. Like a soundtrack to a Lynch film, it's part nostalgic and part surreal. This is a real 'back to basics' album for the band, toning down the live drums and layered riffs of their previous records, focusing instead on the songwriting and melodies. Despite not re-inventing the wheel, the best tracks here mix the familiar keyboard drones and rippling guitar lines with subtle electronic flourishes. The looping distorting vocals on lead single ‘Sparks’ and the reverb-drenched choir that opens 'Days Of Candy' stand out immediately. Depression Cherry is a melancholy and bittersweet record that will stay with you long after it's finished spinning.

Little Boots really is pop's true underdog. She was practically ignored and dropped by her label with her debut album Hands, but had the drive to start her own label, now she's back with her third record and her strongest effort yet. Musically, Working Girl pulls a huge number of references from ’90s dance, house and pop, to the point where it might turn some off. The album works best when it plays up a detached coolness. ‘Taste It’ and ‘Better in the Morning’ being the best of the bunch. A few of the tracks, however, do struggle under the weight of the production, with Boots’ vocals not quite strong enough to pull it off. Still, if you're a fan of power suits, pastels and voguing, Working Girl is totally on point.

Robyn has always pushed the boundaries of commercial pop and her newest EP release is no different. La Bagatelle Magique is actually a collaboration between Robyn, Christian Falk and her keyboardist Markus Jägerstedt. Love is Free is a celebration of dance music and its many forms. The EP finds Robyn and Co firmly in rave o’clock territory and there’s a carefree attitude to it all. Opener 'Lose Control' is the closest you’ll get to classic Robyn here, but it’s the stomping title track that steals the show. It’s basically a five minute rollercoaster ride through the ’90s rave scene, cow bells and 808’s galore. While 'Tell You (Today)' literally sounds like four different songs chucked into a blender and then thrown at a wall, it all somehow works.

Out & About Levi's Sunset BBQ at Splendour in the Grass

Sadly, not all of us could attend this year’s Splendour in the Grass. And out of those who nabbed tickets, even fewer made it to, the Levi’s Sunset BBQ Party, (probably because it was a secret). Day two saw Splendour’s infamous Tackle Shack play host to industry reps, media, VIPs and artists from the line-up for a private sunset party. If that’s not enough, there was also an intimate performance from Liverpool three-piece, The Wombats. It all sounds a little too good to be true, but sadly we have photos as proof. levis.com.au
