Reliving our childhood Yes, we did go to see The Wiggles' over 18 live show. Yes, it was awesome. Refreshing everything We’ve been using September as a time to ready ourselves for summer. That means doing the dreaded wardrobe cull, upping our green smoothie intake (from zero to one) and showing our winter skin some TLC. Celebrating small achievements Cutting into a perfectly ripe avocado, getting up without hitting snooze, actually eating the daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetables, reaching the free coffee on our loyalty cards, getting through the whole day without charging our phones, when it’s Friday. It's the little things that count.

The Scoop

APOM We can think of a few good reasons why APOM is one of our favourite brands at the moment. Firstly, its garments are ethically manufactured, produced locally in Melbourne. Secondly, it collaborates with local artists, creating unique prints that are signature to the brand. The most recent collection, Maggie May, is a minimal range of keepsake staples and fresh wardrobe additions. Each piece celebrates women who are comfortable in their own skin and with their own style. Lucky for you, the collection is available to shop in-store and online now. apom.net.au

Bendigo Art Gallery It’s time to take a trip to Bendigo. For the first time in his 20-year career, fashion great, Toni Maticevski, has opened his archives to the public. Curated by Bendigo Art Gallery, Dark Wonderland is your chance to see some of Maticevski’s greatest works, including Princess Mary’s Monaco gown and the gold lamé number Jessica Mauboy sported at Eurovision. Dark Wonderland runs until November 20. bendigoartgallery.com.au

Cotton On OnceWas Every collection OnceWas has dropped of late has absolutely killed it. So what’s next? Designer Belinda Glynn wanted customers to have a complete sensory shopping experience with the OnceWas brand. The answer to this void: Style Labs. There are currently three Style Labs in Melbourne, based in Fitzroy and Hampton, with a new location in Hawksburn Village. Each is nestled between gorgeous cafes, homewares, antique and fashion stores, and allows customers to fully immerse themselves into the OnceWas brand. You’ll be treated to a versatile edit of refined yet functional wear, with the expertise of styling assistants on hand. Find the Hawksburn Style Lab at 560 Malvern Road, Hawksburn Village. oncewas.com.au

OK, we’ll admit it: we probably definitely have an addiction to buying homewares. And the burning desire only intensifies when we hear news like this. Cotton On has just announced its first ever homewares range, CO:Home. The drop covers three categories – living, gifting and summer entertaining – each in a dreamy Scandi colour palette. Available in-store and online from October 31. cottonon.com.au

The Docs you know and love have just had a makeover, but not in the ‘you-won’t-recognise-me’ kind of way. Introducing the DM’s Lite. The newest member of the family still boasts all the iconic Dr Martens features – including the trademark heel loop and yellow stitching – but sees its style slightly altered for broader appeal. The DM’s Lite features an ultra-lightweight midsole, memory foam insole and thinner body, making it the comfiest pair of Docs you've ever worn. You can get the DM’s Lite in black or cherry red in both the Newton 8-eye and Cavendish 3-eye styles. For stockists call 1800 655 154

It’s not just the weather that’s heating up. Wrangler’s dropped a steamy summer campaign for its latest collection. Titled Run for Love, it documents a romantic road trip across a typically Australian landscape of dusty fields, open roads and distant mountains. As for the clothes, the collection is a nod to the ’70s, with distressed denim, high-waisted shorts, mom jeans and vintage logo tees. It’s clear Wrangler knows that nothing goes together like a warm summer’s day and a well-loved pair of denim shorts. wrangler.com.au

With Feeling

Remember Us to Life is out September 30. reginaspektor.com

As fans, we come to know an artist for a sound or body of work. Do you feel pressured to stick to what people know or follow on from your existing records? I mean, I really don’t. I have my own pursuits, obviously. I have my own ideas about what I want to explore sonically or maybe I’ll do things I haven’t tried before. I’m really lucky. I have been spoilt because I’m made to feel very safe and welcome [by my fans], like I can just concentrate on making art and expressing myself. I think it’s very natural that some things are for some people and other things are not, but I think that’s cool. I don’t think I would want to live in a world where everything was for everybody.

I got a little giddy when I heard Regina Spektor was releasing her first album in four years. Even more so when I found out I’d get to chat to her (it’s not every day you talk to your musical idol). Despite a decade and a half-long career, Regina Spektor is as humble as ever. Chatting about her work on the phone, she exudes an infectious, childlike excitement, one that only makes me like her more.

BY VERONIC A STANFO R D

Congratulations on Remember Us to Life. How did the writing process differ to your previous records? Thank you! Well, I wrote all the songs on this record in the last few years – most of them while pregnant, or after I had the baby. They are all from that altered headspace that you have during that time (laughs). The process allowed me to know that I could have this dual existence – I could have ‘mum’ time, be really present, make a lot of soup and all that stuff. I could also go to the studio and use my skills, learn new things and explore. That was very cool, to know that it could be a life of both.

12

Were you ever worried that becoming a mother would put your musical career on the back-burner? I was more worried that I wouldn’t have the time or even the desire for it. I think it was kind of telling, because a lot of our stress in general life, it doesn’t come from anything real. We sometimes spend hours, building these scenarios – building a ‘what if ’ house brick by brick – that are totally not in the foundation of reality. I think I’m excellent at that. I’m a master builder of ‘what if ’ castles. I have actually found myself using my time better since, having more patience, feeling more inspired and more connected to the human experience.

At your last show in Melbourne, a young boy (no older than seven) and his grandparents were sitting next to me. All three spent the concert singing every lyric to your songs. It’s something that really struck me about your music, that it can appeal to such a broad range of people. What makes your sound so timeless? Oh my god! First of all, that’s so beautiful. That makes me so happy. I wish I could have seen his little face, that’s just so cool. It’s just… that’s very special and I feel very glad about that. But I have no idea (laughs). What year was that? It was in 2012. Wow, so now he must be a little 11-year-old. I wonder what he’s into now? You’ve had a long career in the music industry. What do you hope the future holds for your music? First of all, I feel very lucky to have had that kind of career and still be making music. [Making music] It's just a real gift. I mean fuck, I only have people to thank for it. Most of the time when I think about it, I sort of just get awestruck and very emotional. I think it’s a beautiful way to spend your time, and I hope I just get to keep making music and travelling and connecting with people – what a cool experience to get to have.

Reclaiming the Name

BY AMY CAMPBELL

You can catch Chastity Belt on their Australian tour throughout September and October. For details head to chastity-belt.bandcamp.com

If you’ve been searching for the perfect band to soundtrack that beautifully awkward stage of life between adolescence and adulthood, this could be it. Seattle band, Chastity Belt, knows exactly how you feel. They’ve written songs about kissing boys, drinking beer and arriving at parties only to wish you hadn’t come. When your life is riddled with those nervous butterflies and awkward firsts, Chastity Belt is here to remind you everything’s alright.

Their chosen moniker might not evoke the amiable vibes I’m describing. But don’t let the reference fool you. The beauty of Chastity Belt comes from their refreshingly candid sense of humour and their ability to write songs that discuss ‘girly stuff ’ on a totally human level. “I appreciate listening to other artists who are just honest, it’s like you’re having a conversation with them,” vocalist Julia Shapiro tells me. “When I’m writing songs, I’m not trying to force any messages out there. I’m just like, ‘hey, this is how I feel... this is what’s bothering me... I wanna talk to you about it.’”

14

Shapiro met guitarist Lydia Lund, bassist Annie Truscott and drummer Gretchen Grimm while at college in Walla Walla, Washington. They went to frat parties but “kind of hated them,” and preferred spending weekends road tripping to nearby Seattle to watch their friends play in Battle of the Bands (which they eventually entered and won). “The name came from college. We would go to parties and run around yelling ‘CHASTITY BELT,’ just to see what kind of reaction we’d get from frat brothers,” Shapiro tells me, chuckling. “Eventually, we decided it would be a hilarious name for a band.” What began as an antidote to Chastity Belt’s small town college scene has evolved into a fully-fledged post-punk project that’s not-so-quietly taking on the world. “We started with innocent, simple songs like ‘Nip Slip’ and ‘Healthy Punk’, and now we have more depth,” says Shapiro, of Chastity Belt’s coming of age. “Sometimes I listen to our earlier songs and I’m like ‘darn, we were so silly!’ We’ve basically just learnt how to be in a band.” They’re feminists, but you don’t need to call them a ‘girl band’. Their catchy, colourful punk rock sound speaks for itself in a way that refutes the age-old tendency to attribute their success to gender. Their lyrics are playful and they poke fun at all that giddy/ gritty stuff we endure as we mature. It makes you feel as if you might have known the Chastity gang in another life.

“I never feel the need to make lyrics overly serious or complicated. I think it’s better if songs just sound real, ya know? Most of the time our lyrics come from conversations I’ve had with friends or my boyfriend. I’ll say something and be like, ‘wait, I gotta write that down!’” We can assume there’s been some seriously good convo happening at Chastity Belt band practice lately, because they’ve just finished recording their third, yet-to-be-named album. At the end of September, they’re bringing it to Australia, a decision that was made after the band supported Courtney Barnett on her recent American tour. “Courtney totally convinced us to come to Australia. She was trying to teach us all this Aussie slang so that we would be ready,” laughs Shapiro. “I really took to saying ‘sheila’, but then I found out it was offensive to call someone a ‘sheila!’ Maybe I won’t use that one when I’m there...” Shapiro, a self-proclaimed Pokémon Go addict, is totally excited to venture Down Under and catch the Kangaskhan, which, for people like me who aren’t Pokémon versed, is a native Australian Pokémon. “I hope to find him bouncin’ around somewhere,” she says. If you want to try Chastity Belt’s soundtrack on for size, we recommend pouncing on a ticket to their upcoming Aussie tour. These girls are so darn authentic and chill, they’ll have you feeling like soul-sheilas before the gig is even through.

FJ FE ATU RE

Silver Lining Sophie Thatcher is one up-and-coming jewellery designer we’ve got on our radar. Launching her label earlier this year while undertaking a business and law degree, the Brisbanite balances solid silver with simple geometric shapes. Think statement necklaces, stunning hoop earrings and fine silver rings, all made in Sophie’s studio. We had a chat to the designer about her journey, art and inspiration.

sophiethatcher.com @sophiethatcherjewellery How did you first get into jewellery design? After studying business and law at uni for the past few years, I found I really needed a creative outlet. I wanted to try something new and had always wanted to give silversmithing a go. I looked into it, enrolled in a course and now here I am! Have you always been creative or was this a new step for you? I’ve always been creative. My grandmother is an artist and instilled in me a love of painting from a very early age. It was a natural progression for me to expand into the sculptural form of silversmithing – a combination of my loves of solid form, beautiful materials and self-adornment. There are so many jewellery designers out there, but many don’t actually study silversmithing or metal work. What was behind the decision to undertake formal training? I think proper technique and having an understanding of how materials work is essential in exploring the potential of metal and producing beautiful pieces. Having never tried silversmithing before, I believed doing a course and studying the art would be the best way to launch my passion.

16

Can you tell us about how your design process works? I normally start by sketching a whole lot of potential designs and then experiment with the metal, manipulating it into new shapes and forms. Sometimes I don’t even know what I’m trying to make and I end up creating something really cool! Where do you draw your inspiration from? Art, architecture, photography and people are the main inspirations behind my collections. At the moment I’m really loving French artist Frédéric Forest. His simple line drawings focus heavily on the human form and nature. His work is refined and minimal, but emotive at the same time. He is definitely one of the main influences behind my collection, Forme. Speaking of Forme, what’s the story behind it? With this collection, my aim was to create pieces that are contemporary and unique, but wearable at the same time. Most of the designs draw on the circle – it’s amazing how such a basic shape can be so versatile and interesting. Its simplicity allows the silver to speak for itself. I think it’s a really nice combination.

Do you have a favourite piece or is it like picking between your children? My favourite piece would have to be the Forme earrings (pictured). They were the first earrings I ever designed and I love the way they turned out. I’ve had lots of positive feedback about them from customers! If you could see anyone wearing Sophie Thatcher jewellery, who would it be? I would have to say Bella Hadid – I’m obsessed with her at the moment. A couple of pieces from Forme are inspired by her (the Bella earrings and the Bella bangle). What do you hope the future holds for your label? I’m really excited for the future. I have so many interesting ideas for my next collection, that will build on new shapes and forms. I’m looking forward to introducing gold and experimenting with new textures.

Converse and creativity are two words that go together very nicely. It’s no secret the brand loves supporting local talent (and so do we). This month, we caught up with some of our creative friends, tried on the Chuck Taylor All Star II Shield Canvas and chatted style, guilty pleasures and career advice. NAME CARLOS MANGUBAT JOB FASHION STYLIST

How did you get into styling? After volunteering at MSFW (many moons ago), I decided I wanted to be stylist and not a trend forecaster. I started assisting stylists and developing a folio. After university, I worked really hard to develop a strong enough folio to present to agencies. I've been working ever since. Describe your style in a few words. Commercial with a twist. Who’s the coolest person you’ve dressed? Julian McMahon from Charmed was a starstruck moment. What’s a typical day for you? Answering emails, sourcing clothing and eating all the things I can get my hands on. Favourite on-shoot tune? All I have been playing lately is Drake. What’s the best part about your job? Getting to be creative and seeing my vision executed. What’s the worst part about your job? Returning all the beautiful clothing to the people that actually own it. Where do you see yourself in five years? Still in the fashion industry, I’m not sure in what aspect. What advice would you give to those thinking about a career in styling? Assist first. You can’t just have a great Instagram.

NAME ELLE GRAHAM (AKA WOODES) JOB PRODUCER/SINGER/SONGWRITER

How did you get into producing, singing and songwriting? When I was younger I always sang in choirs and liked learning the lyrics to my favourite songs. Around that time, I started playing classical piano and then percussion. When I was about 11, I started writing my own music. Producing was a natural step forward for me after high school, to be able to extend my concepts, record and share them. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Music has allowed me to travel quite a lot. I like exploring new cities. It was really good to get over to Canada for my first international shows a couple of months ago. Describe your live shows in three words. Reverb. Stories. Evolving. Who would your ultimate creative collab be with? James Blake, Jon Hopkins or Alexandra Patsavas. Describe your day-to-day style. I’m really into comfort and layers. I wear sneakers and jeans a lot, though I do love fashion and styling for Woodes. For performances and shoots, I spend more time conceptualising what I wear and working with local Melbourne designers. What’s a typical day for you? I’m fond of breakfast, so it starts there, followed by a coffee run. Usually I write, catch up on emails and work on a range of different things. What I like about my work at the moment is there isn’t a lot of repetition day-to-day, it’s keeping me on my toes.

What’s the best part about the local music scene? It’s very close-knit and active. I feel like we live in a bubble and I love it. I also think it’s cool that in Melbourne you can simply go up to both national and international artists and say hello. It’s easy to reach out to others and it’s easy to grow here. Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully writing for myself, for others and with others, still. I hope to have a couple of albums out, and some larger collaborations in film and TV. I would love to work on soundtracks in particular. What advice would you give to people wanting to break into the music industry? Download some kind of recording software, work with your friends, seek mentors, surround yourself with good people, dabble in things, analyse your favorites, read a lot, be considerate, be kind and make good work that you’re proud of.

Quickfire questions My biggest strength is... my imagination. Creativity is... key. Heels or sneakers... sneakers always. My favourite item of clothing is... my Rains raincoat or my Nique hooded anorak jacket. The best meal of the day is... breakfast. It’s a clear decision. You know the variables you’re working with. Big kids, move over. There’s a new era of swimwear designers making a splash (see what we did there?). Whether you relish the annual bikini shop or avoid it like the plague, these independent labels will help you on your way.

Ethical swimwear gets a big tick from us, especially when it looks this good. Camp Cove Swim stands for individuality, creativity, self-confidence, self-worth, freedom and happiness; so naturally, we like everything the label is doing. The Sydneybased team works in close partnership with a local swimwear machinist to ethically produce styles for every woman. Aside from the brand’s signature cheeky cut bottoms, Camp Cove also caters for bigger busts and those who are after fuller coverage down below. Prints are designed in-house with local artists and the new season drops soon. You know this is going to be good. campcoveswim.com

May & Hugo

Eau Paix Vie

There are more than a few reasons why we like Sydney’s May & Hugo. The label is committed to producing sustainable and ethical (yes please!) swimwear. Its pieces are handmade from 100 per cent post-consumer nylon and polyester from abandoned fishing nets. Founders Emily and Marcos are all about intelligent design and investing in the environment. They ensure their designs are delivered to you in recycled packaging and even donate 10 per cent of all profits to WWF. There’s no skimping on design either. May & Hugo’s SS16 collection, La Donna, is a beautiful balance of feminine and athletic cuts. mayandhugo.com

Let’s play a word association. You ready? Beach. Pineapples. Summer. Colour. Watermelon. Sand. Fun. Perhaps the best response to all these terms is Eau Paix Vie. The swimwear label is all about bright, playful ’kinis to match just how you want your summer to be. Bringing the fun back to swimwear, EPV specialises in cheeky cuts and vibrant colours, with everything made from the highest quality Italian fabrics. If the label looks familiar, it’s probably because it is. Eau Paix Vie has over 200k Instagram followers and counting. Midnight Swim

There’s no better way to get excited about the rising mercury than with new bathers (we’re sure of it). Debut Aussie brand, Salty Fox, has released its first season of swimwear. Made in Australia from Italian lycra, this newcomer offers a range of flattering cuts and styles. The highlight of the bold collection is the metallic gold bikini, which gives off strong goddess vibes. We’re also pretty partial to the floral one-piece (pictured) and the mesh and lycra top, perfect for a post-dip cover up. Made to be worn under the sun and in the sea, the high quality pieces will last the entire season and beyond. saltyfox.com.au

If your ideal summer is played out on the sand, in the sun and well into the night, Midnight Swim will be to be right up your alley. Founded by Australian designer Genevieve Er, Midnight is inspired by balmy nights and warm days. Combining boho references and athletic elements, Midnight’s pieces are easily recognisable – think statement styles and cuts that are sure to make you feel a little sexy. The label’s current collection, Boho Love, delivers crochet two-pieces in neutrals, pinks, yellows and khaki. Meet us at midnight. midnightswimwear.com

U&I

The U&I girl isn’t one to sunbake on the beach for hours. Instead, the Torquay-based label was dreamt up between sets while surfing at Bells Beach. U&I creates practical swimwear for active women, without compromising on femininity and style. Made in Melbourne, the range features an interchangeable mix of tops, bottoms and one-pieces in SPF 50+ fabric, with a marble print for the new season. The U&I woman protects the places she loves, and so the label also donates a portion of sales to not-for-profit organisations protecting local sea life. uandilabel.com.au

— From High School leaver to Intern at Marie Claire.

Ellen Wang is one of our youngest students at Karl von Busse Institute of Design, enrolling at the Institute at just 16 years of age, but age was definitely not a factor that has held Ellen’s dreams back. Just months into her course she is achieving so much already, she is a creative at heart and at KvB this is what we celebrate.

“ High school isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! The Karl von Busse Institute of Design allows students from year 10 to join because they believe that there are individuals out there who just don’t fit into high school and deserve a chance to apply for something more suitable for them.” Leaving high school is definitely a big decision for any student, so for all those young creative minds out there, that feel like high school just isn’t for them, Ellen shares with them some advice of how she took the leap and changed her path, loving every second of it... REDKEN is taking beach hair to a whole new level with the launch of its Beach Envy Volume collection. The products use active ingredient filloxane to penetrate the hair fibre, expanding the hair’s diameter and providing increased volume. Sounds a tad far fetched, but we’ve tried it and it works. Not to mention that it smells good too, with notes of bergamot, jasmine, orange flower and vanilla. The range includes a shampoo and conditioner, as well as the Volume Wave Aid (pictured). Prepare for loose, undone beach waves. shop.redken.com.au

As far as skincare goes, Stem Organics ticks all the boxes. Not only are the products Australian made, they are also completely vegan and committed to zero animal testing. Most recently, the brand has released a nourishing body lotion, a welcome addition to its impressive catalogue of beauty products. Made with an exclusive formula, the lotion is a soft combination of citrus, jojoba balancing skin serum and aloe vera. Perfect to get your skin summer-ready. stemorganics.com

07 The A.M

If there is one struggle we can all relate to, it’s finding activewear that is socially acceptable to wear daily. Perhaps it’s the greatest dilemma of our generation. Perhaps not. But one independent label is helping us all out. Better described as an athleisure label, Jasmine Alexa creates quality garments that are designed to be worn as daywear, but with appropriate functionality for a good sweat sesh. There’s a strong emphasis on comfort, fabric and fit, supported by a very cool, minimalist aesthetic. This is active daywear for active lifestyles. Far from you’re used to. jasminealexa.com

Didn’t you hear? Coffee is so yesterday. If you don’t start your day with a turmeric latte, you’re doing it wrong. Golden Grind is a perfectly proportioned blend, with 100 per cent organic turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper. Mixed in Melbourne, Golden Grind is vegan and completely free from sugar, nuts, gluten, dairy and preservatives. A cup a day is an easy way to increase your health, thanks to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric. There are now three blends in the mix, including a new chilli blend and coconut and cacao. With no caffeine, this is a drink that helps you stay golden. goldengrind.com.au

Real talk: we’re all guilty of laying on the couch in our activewear. But you need to get moving, people. And to get you on your way is Active Style. The retailer curates a huge range of activewear and accessories for genuinely active people. Oh, and you. Brands range from independents like First Base and Arcadia Movement, right through to sporting giants like Nike and adidas. You can also choose between performance wear and athleisure. There’s a friendly exchange process and delivery to your door, meaning you won’t even have to leave the couch. But we bet you’ll want to. activestyle.com.au

With the influx of pretty activewear for all our brunching needs, came a lull in gear for those of us who actually use it to exercise. Enter The A.M, a sportswear brand specialising in high performance wear for women. The range encompasses compression and active leggings, crops and a cap so far, all aptly named on the hour in the A.M. The pieces are made with moisture-wicking materials to keep you comfortable during your workout and are designed with versatility in mind. Hoj makes aesthetically pleasing and practical accessories that’ll take your belongings safely from A to B – think bags made to be worn comfortably while cycling and walking. Though made in Melbourne, the range has a distinctly Scandinavian feel. Creator Lisa Edlund Tjernberg has a background in industrial design and uses her Swedish heritage as the inspiration for the label’s minimal lines and utilitarian form. Most pieces are crafted from vegetable-tanned kangaroo leather, making them both sturdy and sustainable. The 2016 collection is all about functionality, with iPad cases that can be used as clutches, backpacks that can transform into totes and the option of customising your own pieces. Time to up your bag game. hojapparel.com.au

If you’re a lover of all things silk (who isn’t?), you’ll want to pay Pereira Fitzgerald a visit. The label produces 100 per cent silk pieces, with a focus on high quality production and luxury finishes. Inspired by lingerie silhouettes of the ’40s, the Resort ’17 collection features bralettes, dresses, overalls and skirts in hues of copper, peach, nougat and charcoal. But the best part about Pereira Fitzgerald is its commitment to ethical and local manufacturing. Each garment is made in Sydney, while the silk is sourced from an Australian manufacturer. Supporting local has never been so easy. pereirafitzgerald.com

We’re calling it. It’s time to ditch navy and black in favour of something a little more exciting. Meet Kira Pizzingrilli, the textile designer whose namesake label will add a splash of colour to your wardrobe. Kira’s designs play with modern cuts across classic and feminine styles, resulting in a unique twist on standard tailoring. The label’s latest collection, Unearth, is inspired by the Australian bush. The aptly named ‘Eucalypt’ print covers swimsuits and dresses, playing with motifs of native flora across a palette of baby pink and powder blue. If you’re in the market for something a little more subtle in its references, the ‘Acacia’ lace styles are the perfect mix of creative design and elegant styling. kirapizzingrilli.com

For jewellery that’s simple and of the highest quality, it’s worth a look at Metal and Dust. Hailing from Perth, designer Steph Brownfield handcrafts rings, earrings, necklaces and chokers that can be stacked, layered, or worn on their own. As for the materials, Steph works with solid gold, sterling silver, opals and ethically-sourced diamonds, all recycled where possible. The result is thoughtfully designed, minimal pieces that will fit seamlessly into your jewellery collection. For something a little more personal, Metal and Dust will even custom design pieces. A fancy keyring isn’t an accessory one usually seeks out. More often than not, it’s a gift, souvenir (read: mini Eiffel Tower) or something that just catches your eye at the time. Frill & Frank is going to change that. The independent label makes tasselled leather keyrings, necklaces and other cute gifts for lovers of bright things. Handmade by industrial designer Joelle Boelen, Frill & Frank’s pieces are made from locally-sourced, recycled leather offcuts and polymer beads from repurposed jewellery. Each design is colourful, quirky and hand-painted, making it one-of-a-kind. Your car keys or handbag will thank you. frillandfrank.com

Rouge the Label celebrates our inner fire, vision and courage through jewellery that is powerfully beautiful. The brand’s motto is ‘jewellery for the strong of heart’, encouraging women to stand by their unique and individual styles. Designer Iulia Mirela Ilisan pairs high quality sterling silver with real gemstones to create raw pieces that will elevate your personal style. These Sydney-made creations are produced in limited runs, making them all the more desirable. Pieces are striking enough to be worn on their own, but minimal enough to be mixed and matched. We’re thinking the sterling silver rings and gemstone ear cuffs are a pretty killer combination. rougethelabel.com

THE ART OF GRATITUDE

WILD ONE

THE NAKANO THRIFT SHOP

Meredith Gaston

Jessica Whitman

Hiromi Kawakami

I really, really do not want to sound like a cynic here, but please. Are there no words more loathsome than “you can choose happiness!”? The Art of Gratitude reads just like a blown up version of that statement. Bordering on preachy, it's saved by two elements. One, it has Meredith’s beautiful illustrations woven throughout. Two, it has empty spaces to allow the reader to fill in the blanks, undertaking a little written self-reflection. Yes, it’s undeniable this is a beautiful little hardback and admittedly, there is some fantastic advice here. But perhaps I need to practise a little more gratitude, because no thanks Meredith. Not for me.

In case you couldn’t tell from the sunset-laden cover or suggestive title, Wild One is a wee bit trashy. Allow me to paint you a picture. She is an insanely attractive cool girl who has no idea how beautiful she is. He is a rich polo player with an Argentinian background and beautiful eyes. He is a bad boy womaniser. She tries to tame him. It’s manufactured glamour to the nth degree, with just the right amount of character fault to make this story accessible. Although it’s a little early in the year for a beach read, Wild One is ready when you are.

Gentle, pleasant and charming are all words that feel appropriate when describing The Nakano Thrift Shop. Translated from Hiromi Kawakami’s original Japanese text, the story follows Hitomi, a young girl who takes a low-paying job at the local thrift shop. As you may have guessed, it’s hardly a page turner. Yet I found myself developing a strong fondness for each of the characters, in their own quirky, imperfect kind of way. Much like Hitomi herself, the story is understated and slightly awkward, but has a highly endearing quality. An agreeable Sunday night read.

APE IN PINK MARBLE

Britney Spears

Devendra Banhart

I must admit, I didn’t have high expectations for Britney’s ninth album. After all, the last interaction I had with Brit was watching her awkward turn with Iggy Azalea in the ‘Pretty Girls’ clip. The opener ‘Invitation’ was surprising, to say the least – a dreamy cut that sounds respectively modern. It’s followed by ‘Do You Wanna Come Over?’ which, by comparison, is thoroughly vintage Spears (in a good way). It has some highlights (and a few scattered lowlights), but fans of Brit should get around this, even if it’s just via a cheeky champers-and-stream for your Saturday night pre-game. After all, it’s Britney, bitch.

50

If you’re looking for a follow up to Channel Orange with Blonde, then you’ll be sorely disappointed. While Channel Orange looked out, Blonde looks within, shrinking and twisting in introspective sparseness. Yes, it’s personal. Yes it’s intimate and hardly political at all (apart from a few key statements). But by the time I reach the end of the album, I feel I know Ocean less. It’s weirdly ironic. With the visual album Endless including a video stream of paint drying (literally), Ocean shouldn’t be too disappointed that I feel it’s an apt metaphor for Blonde.

Airy and unassuming, Devendra Banhart's latest release will likely fly under the radar – much like his previous eight albums. Ape In Pink Marble is a wistfully reflective release, right from the first strains of the lead single ‘Middle Names’, a song about feeling alone, together. Banhart gently opines "feel the rain fall down again… I'm heading in the other direction. Feel the rain fall." Ape could even be termed meditative, until the energy picks up on ‘Fancy Man’ and piques your interest with the rolling rumba of ‘Theme For A Taiwanese Woman In Lime Green’. I guess the lesson here is, you never really know Banhart. Expect the unexpected.
