Beauty reports Our office is by no means glam. More often than not you’ll find us with bags under our eyes, dry shampoo in our hair and quite regularly, makeup-free. We’ve been putting in a little more effort recently though, and documenting the process with FJ Beauty Reports. It’s how we rank the best of new and cult beauty products. You can see how they stack up at fashionjournal.com.au/beauty/reviews
Young people doing cool things We’ve been feeling inspired by the sheer number of young folk killing it in the creative industries. We caught up with 16-year-old Lianna Perdis. She's recently teamed up with her dad (industry legend, Napoleon Perdis) to launch a makeup range and has landed a spot on this month's cover. She’s not the only young gun of the month. We stole some time with Alice Kennedy, the 2016 winner of the VAMFF National Graduate Showcase. We also photographed five new faces from IMG Models. These girls are just taking their first steps in the modelling world, but they’re already doing big things.

Acler Nothing gets us excited for hot weather quite like the release of Spring/Summer collections. So Australian label Acler is making us very happy right now. Everyone knows the quintessential Tommy Hilfiger look, so it’s kinda big news when the fashion powerhouse steps outside the box and does something a wee bit different. Tommy’s gone old school for its latest capsule collection. Taking inspo from the ’90s, this line is all about high-waisted essentials, oversized jackets and long-sleeved sweatshirts. The campaign features Hailey Baldwin and Lucky Blue Smith, both working their magic and making us reallyyyyy want some of those cut-off shorts. global.tommy.com/au

Make a Mark In just a few just months, Alice Kennedy has gone from the classroom at RMIT to designing for one of Australia’s largest department stores. Yep, she’s achieved a lot in her short time as a designer. After presenting a cleverly textured collection on the runway at VAMMF, Alice was announced as the 2016 winner of the National Graduate Showcase. The talented grad is now undertaking Target’s mentoring program and will soon be launching her own collection for the retailer. With a strong design style and plans to head to New York in the next year, you’ll want to remember her name.
VAMFF 2017 will take place on March 1-19, 2017. vamff.com.au target.com.au
INTERVIEW BY VERONICA STANFORD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MADDIE ROUX How did you enjoy showcasing at VAMFF? Amazing, it was so much fun. I was really lucky, two of my friends from uni were in [the NGS], so it was fun to experience it with them. It makes you feel special (laughs). All the hard work everyone does in fourth year has paid off. Obviously we weren’t the only ones who worked hard – everyone worked so hard and we were just lucky to get in. Have you started on your Target capsule collection? I’m about two months in. I was expecting my first day to be like: ''this is where the coffee is, this is where you sit.'' Instead it was: ''here’s a pencil, a pad and off you go.'' The design process was very fast-paced, different to RMIT. [At school] we could chop and change elements as we went, as it was only ourselves involved in the process. But at Target, it obviously involves many other people, both in Australia and overseas. When you sign off on a design, that’s it, it’s out of your hands and it’s in production. It’s been very ‘go, go, go’ but the whole team is so lovely. They’re really warm and welcoming.
10
How has the process been so far? It’s been amazing. I’ve had total freedom to design how I like, however it’s very commercial, which is different to how I’ve worked in the past. Target already has an idea of who its woman is. But [the team] has been saying, ''design however/whatever you like and we will reel you back in if it’s too risky for the market.'' As my style is quite clean and minimal, I haven’t had any trouble with the design process at all. What can we expect from the collection? The collection is 12 pieces. It’s minimal with clean lines and includes garments [ranging] from a slip dress to wide-leg pants. It can cater for all outings, which is definitely something I’ve learnt at my time with Target. At RMIT you could evolve as your collection came to life. But with the Target collection, the brand already has a market that isn’t rapidly changing. What else have you learnt throughout this experience? Stay true to your designs and pick your battles. You aren’t going to win every battle and will have to sacrifice some things to get [others]. Relinquishing control is another. I’m so used to doing everything myself, but you need to step back and let others help.
What’s next for you now that you’ve graduated? My plan is to do New York. I’m planning on moving over there with my friend, Bella. We’ll just see what happens. I feel like New York is the place to go if you want to see if you're really good or not. Quickfire questions Fashion is... for you to decipher. Creativity is... your form of expression. My favourite song is... ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac. The best place to shop is... in Australia? Sydney. Uni is... hard work and worth it. I never leave the house without... my little point-and-shoot. I’d most like to visit... Yosemite National Park. The designer I’d most like to meet is... Raf Simons. I’d ask him... for a job at Calvin Klein! The best book I’ve ever read is... my first year pattern-making booklet. My favourite place in the world is... I don’t really have one yet, Melbourne’s pretty great though. On a Friday night you’ll find me... at work. The National Graduate Showcase was... an amazing experience.

London Calling
WORDS BY TARA SMITH
You can catch George Maple on her Australian tour this month. georgemaple.com
It’s 7pm on a Thursday night and I’m placing a call to London. It’s not my usual Thursday night, but it’s not every night I call George Maple for a chat. It’s 10am in London. As she answers, I hear the faint clinking of coffee cups in the background. George’s day is just beginning. Her real name isn’t actually George, it’s Jess. George Maple is the exaggerated persona of Jess Higgs, an Australian songwriter from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. So who is George Maple? I ask. “It was a blank canvas for me… As it’s evolved it’s become an extension of myself, maybe a place where I put things that are a little more exaggerated. It’s an outlet that I can channel everything into. It has a particular vibe. Someone said it’s ‘dangerous pop music’ and that’s kind of what I’m doing at the moment. I like that expression a lot.” The last few years of George Maple’s career have been a whirlwind. Divine intervention led to her chance meeting with Hugo from Flight Facilities, when she was just 18. “I met Hugo from Flight Facilities after I was playing a gig in King’s Cross. He left his bag at the DJ booth and we happened to cross paths and we had a mutual friend… I sent him a demo that I’d done and the next week we wrote 'Foreign Language' together.” She’s also collaborated with Flume, Tkay Maidza, What So Not, Hayden James and Snakehips.
12
“There are no managers calling each other and saying ‘this person is the next hot thing. You should work with them!’ It’s never been like that. I really don’t vibe that. For me, you have relationships with people, you make music and that’s the best music you can make because it’s based off something that’s real.” At this point I’m starting to think that George Maple is part of Australia’s coolest gang. “Sometimes there will be an artist that I’ll just approach. Like Tkay [Maidza]…She came to my house in Sydney and stayed with us for like three days. She and I camped out with What So Not and we wrote a whole bunch of songs.” It was Emoh Instead (of What So Not) who worked on Maple’s latest single ‘Sticks and Horses’. It was also his idea to premiere the single in an American strip club. “If the girls can move to it, it means people will move to it on the dance floor,” Maple laughs. “It’s always been made for that realm.”
That realm has served as a point of inspiration for Maple’s music as well as style, she tells me. “When I was in Paris, I was going to a lot of Parisian sex shops and they are so incredible. The way they design all of the pieces, it’s just another level. I’ve never seen anything like it. “I’m into a lot of PVC, a lot of latex, a lot of dark lips…I just like drama. I like drama in everything at the moment.” In terms of her writing process, I ask Maple what inspires her. Does she draw from real-life events in her songs? “I like the idea that there’s different environments that inspire different kinds of songs. It might be a place I’m in, it might be a conversation I have,” she says. “I feel like the strongest songs are always something that I’ve personally been through.” With recurring themes of money, power and sex, it’s safe to assume she’s got a lot going on.

Weighting on Fashion to Change
Fashion is increasingly championing diversity. So why is it still ignoring the plus-size customer?
BY AMY CAMPBELL There she goes, again. Another spunky, confident, well-dressed lady walking out of the store, empty handed. She loved the dress. She liked the colour, the cut and the style. Everything about it was perfect. It just didn’t quite fit. Did I mention she’s plus size? I shouldn’t have to. Not today. Not in 2016, where the average Australian woman wears a size 14. But after working retail for various local labels, I know this happens on the reg. While many brands overseas are willingly extending their size range (and no doubt, extending their revenue), for most high-end Aussie labels, plus size is still a taboo. Local retailers are struggling beneath the growing popularity of online shopping and fast fashion chains, so if the average Aussie lady is a plus size, why aren’t we making clothes for her? It’s like opening a bar and telling half the population they can’t drink there. Believe it or not, the term ‘plus size’ was actually rather practical when it was coined. In the 1920s, when mass manufacturing of fashion began, it referred to sizes outside what was then considered ‘average’. Back then, it was a label used to classify clothes, not the women wearing them. That was almost a century ago. Times have changed, people. Today, we have bullet trains, microwavable popcorn and artificial limbs. The average human body shape has changed, too. But illogically, the standard fashion size range has stayed the same.
14
I could write an article deploring this mindset, as many before me have done. But after discussing the issue with both designers and plus-size women, I’ve become aware there’s more to making larger sizes than it seems. Cost is the biggest barrier. Manufacturing on-shore is tough enough, but the cost of creating entirely new patterns and purchasing the required amount of fabric for larger sizes is virtually unaffordable. In the words of Australian writer and plussize activist, Ally Garrett, “a fashion designer complaining about making more patterns is like a banker complaining about having to count more money”. So while we witness local labels struggle against adversaries, we’re also watching them deny an influential customer patronage. It seems rather odd, right? Especially when you look to individuals and companies championing women with real waistlines, and the success and attention they’re receiving (Ashley Graham on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Paloma Elsesser for Lonely Lingerie, *sigh*). It’s difficult to see how the financial input wouldn’t pay for itself. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to Melbourne-based plus-size model, Laura Vudé. Laura is represented by Folk Collective and despite wearing a size 18, she’s one of the agency’s most in-demand talents.
“I don’t think Australian designers realise plus-size women want to support them,” she told me, when I asked if she found it hard to shop locally. “So we buy fast fashion and we buy online. But what else are we meant to wear when local brands won’t cater to us?” Yes, there are some amazing local labels that cater purely to plus-size women. But based on my experience, like Laura, there is a customer out there that’s still not satisfied. She wants to sport the stuff she sees in Vogue, RUSSH and Elle. But sadly, it’s the very labels on these pages that still don’t consider her a player in the fashion stakes. Perhaps this plus-size venture isn’t one for an already established brand to tackle. Maybe it’s a market opportunity waiting for a next-gen designer to seize. With a gap in the market this profound, creating high-end clothes above a size 14 should be viewed as an opportunity to make change. To be an industry leader. To design the clothes few others have dared to design. But for now, the plus-size customer waits patiently. And in many cases, with cash to burn and a beautiful body to dress. One day soon, a contemporary creative will wake up and tap this untapped market. But the question remains: when?

01 Verity Wood
Local, ethical, feminist. We’re pretty passionate about brands that take on those values and Verity Wood does just that. Made in Melbourne, the one-year-old label prides itself on achieving luxury quality while remaining ethically conscious. To ensure this, Verity Wood only uses fabrics sourced from accredited manufacturers. Pretty impressive, huh? Aptly named Modern Feministe, the brand’s new collection reflects Verity Wood’s #girlpower through clothing that’s feminine and provocative. The meticulous construction of each piece demonstrates the brand’s obsession with fine detail. The entire range encapsulates contemporary feminism, from silk camis to pink leather minis and classic fur coats – all faux, of course. veritywood.com.au
02 Vilund Design
Vilund is a label that goes beyond what you’d expect of jewellery. Brains behind the brand, Katja Vilund, is a Finnish-born, Sydney-based creator who favours a clean-lined approach to design. It’s unsurprising, given her background, with collections fusing Nordic influences and contemporary Australian elements. The result is refreshingly unpretentious jewellery. Playing with minimalism and geometric shapes, Vilund’s work exudes a near-artistic quality. She also understands the importance of detail, hiding almost missable finishes in every piece. While the small things can often be left unnoticed, Vilund wants you to appreciate the finer details. vilunddesign.com

Attitude.L is an emerging label focusing on simple, everyday wear. The debut collection, Attitude Determines Altitude, features raw cuts and asymmetrical hems across a range of versatile staples. Baby pink, dusty blue and stone grey make up the minimal colour palette and soften the label’s military-style silhouettes. Launched in 2012, By Charlotte is the brainchild of Australian makeup artist, Charlotte Blakeney. The label actually began as a side project for Charlotte, while she worked as a makeup artist for some big names (think Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar). She now sells super-luxe pieces globally under her namesake label, with designs inspired by tropical island locations. We hear even Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a fan. bycharlotte.com.au

This means not only do Bok’s products look nice, they’re environmentally sensitive too. bokbynarella.com
Ah, the inimitable search for the perfect leather jacket. To the untrained eye, they can all look the same. But those who have ever shopped for a leather jacket will know how hard it is to find the right one. At least Captaine is bringing you one step closer. The label fuses the past and present to develop a new narrative for Australian fashion – one that involves leather pants, skirts, coats and hopefully, your new leather jacket. captaine.com.au

There’s no harsh chemicals, only quality botanical and plant-derived ingredients. If that’s not enough to make you jump online, the brand is also committed to the environment. Made in Australia, all packaging is recyclable and BPA free, plus for every product sold, Byron Bay Skincare will plant one tree. If that’s not brand goals, we don’t know what is. byronbayskincare.com.au

Junior Watches Ask Junior Watches to describe their product and they’ll come back with three words: Damn Good Watches. It’s not hard to see why. Aside from nailing the balance between traditional and contemporary elements, Junior Watches also know it should be quality over quantity. Accordingly, each style is limited in run, with watches individually numbered on the back of the face. Which is big, by the way. Faces span a diameter of 48mm, far bigger than the standard 40mm. And if you’re not totally happy with your purchase (why?) Junior Watches will also offer a full refund. Not that you’ll need it. juniorwatches.com

Her father may be one of Australia’s most recognisable faces in beauty, but that isn't stopping Lianna Perdis from making her own way in the world. Not only has the 16-year-old daughter of makeup king, Napoleon Perdis, recently launched a makeup line, Lianna’s also turning her hand to modelling. All while she finishes high school. Amid her travels between Athens and Australia, we managed to catch some time with Lianna to chat Total Bae and what’s next for her rapidly expanding resumé.
Tell us about Total Bae. How did it come about and what was the process? Growing up in LA, I noticed Napoleon Perdis cosmetics were being [increasingly] stocked at luxury retailers. But there wasn’t makeup available for the younger generation or products I’d be able to afford if my parents didn’t buy them for me. I discussed this with Dad and he thought we could call an upcoming range ‘Total Babe’. I told him ‘babe’ is old school and has now been replaced by ‘bae’ all over social media. So, Total Bae it was. The range is amazing, in price and quality. It’s all about having fun with makeup and creating looks to love. Was this the first time you’ve been able to really work on the business side of things?
ELLERY TOP $990 FROM MYCHAMELEON.COM.AU CHRISTOPHER ESBER SKIRT POA FROM MYCHAMELEON.COM.AU
I’ve grown up around makeup, so it’s always played a big role in my life. As I’ve grown older, Dad is asking for my input when it comes to product formulas, shades, packaging, artwork, etc. I love attending weekly product development meetings with the team and sharing my point of view. You’re starting to make your way in the modelling world. Is this something you’ve always wanted to do? I wouldn’t say it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, more so something that’s just evolved over the last year. I’m enjoying every minute of it and learning so much about the business side of things. I’m excited for what the future holds, whatever that may be. I have the love and support of my family and that's what counts.
VANISHING ELEPHANT TEE $110 ELLERY PANTS $1250 CONVERSE CHUCK II ALL STAR KNIT HIGH TOPS $100
Do you have any advice for girls still figuring out their ‘look’? Remember to always be yourself. Don’t feel like you need to follow the trends and be a clone of everybody else. Use makeup to enhance your look, not mask who you really are. What’s the key to nailing a perfect face of makeup? Primer. Not to prime is a crime! Applying primer before your makeup will not only prepare your skin for the perfect landing, but assist your foundation in lasting from day to night (and beyond).
Quickfire Questions I currently live... in Athens, Greece. But I would love to visit... Brazil. My favourite place to holiday is... Australia Because it’s... home. I’m pretty good at... applying my lipstick without a mirror. If there’s one thing you should know about me it’s... I’m obsessed with skincare and cleansing! When I’m not studying I’m... taking a nap. On the weekend... you’ll find me in my local square catching up with friends. My family is...everything. Dad always tells me... I’m beautiful, smart and can achieve whatever I put my mind to. The best piece of advice he’s ever given me is... to always be confident within yourself and do everything with love, grace and to remain humble. I think girls my age need to stop worrying about... their insecurities and focus on all the positive things in their lives (health, family, friends, goals). If there is one trend I could get rid of, it would be... the heavy makeup trend we’re seeing so much of on social media. And I’d love to see more... natural beauty – [people] enhancing their features with makeup, not masking them. My favourite makeup product of all time is... Total Bae Own it! Mascara in Jet. I’m most comfortable when... I’m surrounded by people that love and care for me. RAINE OZARK BROCADE DRESS $509
The greatest lesson I’ve learnt is... you’re not going to be everybody’s cup of tea and that’s okay. I would describe my style as...edgy. The one piece of clothing you’ll always find in my suitcase is... a cool pair of sneakers. I love to shop... in little laneways and boutiques in Melbourne and Kolonaki in Athens. My favourite piece of clothing is... my John Richmond green bomber jacket. My biggest style influences are... from street brands like Supreme, Diamond...I like mixing street with chic.

Mascara Melt Off $25
Napoleon Perdis is nailing both makeup and skincare products. This trend continues with the launch of its new Multi-Hydration Gel Cream. It refreshes, protects and replenishes, while enriching with skin conditioning ingredients. The formula is packed with moisture, helping your skin become supple with fine lines and wrinkles appearing visibly softer. The high-elastic water gel is transparent in texture, delivering a cool burst of moisture that maintains the highest level of skin hydration. Developed in Korea, the Multi-Hydration Gel Cream is a beforeprimer essential. It really is the gift that keeps on giving. napoleonperdis.com

Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush $44
Waterproof mascara is life. You’re watching a sad film (you’re safe), get caught in the rain (you’re safe), an emotional night out (you’re safe). The one problem we all face, however, is when it comes to removing the stuff. So Too Faced has created a solution to our mascara hurdles, introducing a new product, Mascara Melt Off. It looks like a mascara wand, but instead, it coats your lashes with a conditioning, oil-based formula that removes even the most stubborn of mascaras. It’s brilliant.

SO SAD TODAY
SEX OBJECT
AMAZINGER FACE
Melissa Broder
Jessica Valenti
Zoë Foster-Blake
You may or may not be familiar with Melissa Broder’s twitter account, @sosadtoday. It started as an anonymous account through which Broder shared daily, melancholy observations. As people related to her words, Broder’s account grew. Now we have a book. So Sad Today is a series of short personal essays, shedding light on the darkest corners of Broder’s life. Multiple addictions, sexual fetishes, eating disorders and a permanently ill husband are just some of what’s discussed throughout. But for all its sadness, this is not a depressing book. Instead it’s strangely comforting to have someone write openly and with acceptance about their anxieties, doubts and insecurities.
To anyone who’s ever been catcalled, followed, flashed or made to feel unsafe (oh haiii sister!), this one’s for you. Written by acclaimed feminist, Jessica Valenti, this is raw, confronting and powerful look at what it is to be a woman. Yet it’s no more than a true account of Valenti’s relatively normal life. While it’s tempting to commend her bravery, Valenti is doing nothing special here, just telling it like it is. Her experiences are probably similar to your own. Pass this one on to your sister, your mother, your best friend or that girl you see on the tram every morning. No doubt she could use it too.
I’m reluctant to call anything a ‘beauty bible.’ Hell, I’m even reluctant to write ‘beauty bible’ without the safety of inverted commas. Especially when said ‘bible’ is written by a person selling their own beauty line. Surely Amazinger Face is just one giant advertisement of Zoë Foster-Blake’s skincare range, right? Wrong. It’s more like an informative compilation of every beauty article you’ve ever read (without the marginal ‘how to wear glitter face gel to work’-type articles). It’s more like a manual, starting at square one and sharing easy-to-follow tips on everything beautyrelated. It’s more like, dare I say it, a ‘beauty bible’.
ALBUM REVIEWS THE BRIDE
STRANGE LITTLE BIRDS
FUNBAG1
Bat for Lashes
Garbage
Brendan Maclean
Who doesn’t love a little heartbreak? Bat for Lashes’ latest album tells the story of a bride whose fiancé is killed en route to the chapel. So it’s obviously a little theatrical and dramatic. There’s also some Patrick Swayze-esque ghost romance here too. But most of all, it’s dreamy and Bat for Lashes’ best yet. Sonically, the album is her most restrained. A constant, heartbeat-like beat pulses throughout the entire record. It’s also very heavily inspired by the Lynchian, think Twin Peaks, with tons of reverb that washes over you like a wave. While there aren’t any upbeat tracks like her previous albums, The Bride creates a melancholy mood unlike any other record I’ve heard this year. It’s the type of album you can dive into. Spoiler alert, there’s even a happy ending.
54
It’s comforting to know an album like Strange Little Birds can exist in 2016. This is the classic Garbage sound I grew up with. A few of these songs wouldn’t even sound out of place on 1998’s Version 2.0 (which was my teenage jam), in the best possible way. It won’t win Garbage any new fans, but ’90s kids like me will instantly recognise the grungy guitars and industrial electronics. It’s admirable the band has stuck to its guns, although I wouldn’t argue if someone found the album itself a little dated. At its best, the album is a massive dose of late ’90s nostalgia. Lyrically, it does stumble, but we’ve all been ignoring Garbage’s lyrics for a while now. I’d rather just dig out those old plastic chokers, get the heavy black eyeliner on and get back into our long-lost grunge phase.
More people need to be listening to Brendan Maclean. Not just because he’s one of the few openly queer Australian musicians. And not just because one of the tracks references amyl. People should be listening because there's almost back to back bangers on funbang1, which is not an easy task to achieve.‘Tectonic’ and ‘Never Enough’ most closely recall a Robyn-esque ‘Tears on the Dancefloor’ sound and are immediate highlights. It’s a pop injustice that ‘Tectonic’ didn’t receive the level of exposure it deserved, as it’s one of the finest pop songs Australia’s ever produced. It’s refreshing, especially to hear a male artist embrace pop for what it is. It’s tiring to hide behind the façade of pop only being worthwhile if it’s done ‘ironically’, tongue planted in cheek. Instead, funbang1 is colourful, unapologetically queer and could basically be subtitled “soundtrack to a weekend of my gay life.”
