LIFEwithBIRD LIFEwithBIRD’s AW18 collection, Shelter, is everything we’ve come to expect from the label. Continuing to take cues from architecture, designers Nicholas and Bridget have looked to modernism for inspiration, balancing line, colour and proportion across feminine silhouettes. This season, they’ve played with a monochromatic colour palette with pops of metallic purple, burgundy and fuchsia, as well as an array of textures to keep things interesting. Think silk crepe, Japanese georgette, Australian Merino wool, cashmere and leather. LIFEWITHBIRD.COM

Wool4School has teamed up with Whitehouse Institute of Design to grant a scholarship to one lucky student. Dress Better
Five rules to build a sustainable wardrobe. WORDS BY HANNAH COLE ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE
Sustainability is a big word; with so many individual interpretations, it can be hard to grasp fully. It’s easy to get lost in the semantics, but we can break it down. Here are five simple considerations to take in order to build a more sustainable wardrobe. WASH BETTER
Most denim wearers know to avoid washing jeans for the first six months, and for good reason. One of the key contributors to fashion’s detrimental environmental impact is consumer care. First step: only wash what’s actually dirty – live by the quick-sniff test. Only whatever fails to meet the standard should be cleaned in cold water (get familiar with your machine’s manual) and hung to air-dry. Ditch the dryer for a happier wallet and healthier planet. Microfibres are another major washing consideration. These little terrors leach out of synthetic clothing while washing, wreaking havoc on the ocean. Consider the Guppy Friend, a wash bag designed to catch them before they leave the machine. Synthetic clothing is placed in the bag for washing, and the captured microfibres can be disposed of later. BUY LESS, BUY BETTER
I’m not going to tell you to ‘build your capsule wardrobe’ because, honestly, the phrase induces an incidental eye-roll. But, the converted do have a point. Buying fewer pieces of higher quality is worth it. From an environmental perspective, waste is reduced (fewer garments tossed out due to their
12
shitty make) and, ideally, more eco-friendly pieces are purchased. Practically speaking, your earlymorning, sleepy-eyed outfit choices are made more straightforward. Build a wardrobe based on high-quality basics that will outlast trends and multiple washes. Your definition of basic might be jeans in various shades or a vibrant shirt. You do you, but make it planet-friendly. SEARCH FOR SUSTAINABLE FIBRES
The development of synthetic fibres is the antithesis to sustainable fashion. Thankfully, we now have an array of more eco-friendly options to choose from. Stella McCartney is at the forefront of the sustainable fibre movement, uncompromising on using materials that are both luxurious and considerate. The label opts to use a variety of natural fibres including organic cotton, wool and silk, complemented by a mix of recycled synthetics. Hunt for natural fibres, ideally organicallyproduced without insecticides. Cotton, linen and even hemp or bamboo are a great place to start in building the base of your sustainable wardrobe. LOOK PAST THE ‘MADE IN …’ LABEL
The Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 made us think about where our clothing is made. As a result, many people boycotted brands manufacturing in Bangladesh, China and the like, turning to locally-produced goods instead. We put our trust in Western production and labour laws. Unfortunately, the ‘Made in Melbourne’ or ‘Made in LA’ label may not live up to the standards we are led to expect.
Reports of LA-based manufacturers have been depressing. Workers are frequently paid below the minimum wage, averaging $USD7 an hour, with immensely long days. They’re commonly undocumented immigrants with no legal leg to stand on regarding rights. And it’s not much different here. Look past the “Made in…” label and do some investigating of your own. “Made in China” doesn’t equate to sweatshops, just as “Made in Australia” doesn’t guarantee ethical practices. Organisations like Ethical Clothing Australia are making this easier, accrediting brands who comply with strict guidelines. MAKE FRIENDS WITH A TAILOR
Your local tailor should become your new best friend in the name of sustainability. In today’s world of mass production and one-size-fits-all, garments inevitably fit incorrectly. Sleeves dangle dangerously long, jeans drag along the ground and boobs just never fit quite right. Solution? The tailor. Not only will a tailor help create more flattering, well-fitted pieces, but their practice also positively impacts the planet. Instead of throwing out pants that no longer sit at the right length or a slightly outdated formal dress, visit your local. Broken zippers, lost buttons and frayed hems are breezy jobs. Cultivate better pieces through the right fit and they will last forever: the final key to a more sustainable wardrobe.
INTERVIEW
Wool’s Cool Each year, Wool4School teams up with Whitehouse Institute of Design to give away a scholarship to one lucky student. Last year, the annual design competition, hosted by The Woolmark Company, asked Australian students to design an onstage outfit for their favourite musician, using Australian Merino wool (naturally). The 2017 year 12 winner, Chanelle Davenport, took out the top spot for her designs created for Kylie Minogue. We sat down with Chanelle to talk through her designs, as well as Leanne Whitehouse of Whitehouse Institute of Design to explain what a scholarship really means for the winner. CHANELLE DAVENPORT, YEAR 12 WINNER OF WOOL4SCHOOL
Hi Chanelle, why did you decide to enter Wool4School? I first entered Wool4School because I thought it would be an interesting project for me as I’ve always loved drawing. I really enjoyed it the first time, so I continued to enter each year. What made you choose Kylie Minogue? I thought that most entrants would design outfits for more current musicians, and I wanted to do someone a little different. I thought that Kylie was perfect because she is an Australian icon who has produced amazing hits and also has a very simple, feminine style. What was the process behind designing your pieces? I started drawing basic sketches of garments that I could imagine Kylie wearing. I then began to research her style and gather images of patterns, colours and clothing items and arranged them into a mood board. From the mood board, I drew up more garments that reflected her style better. I then chose one outfit that I felt suited best and began to play with different textures and elements of design until I was happy with how it would perform onstage and the overall look. Can you tell us about each piece you designed? My garment is made up of three pieces. The first piece is a red crop top constructed out of single jersey felted wool. This material is made up of 90 per cent Merino wool and 10 per cent nylon. It's very soft against the skin and has a slight stretch for ease of movement. I used the Cool Wool innovation for the bodice because of its beneficial properties, such
14
as breathability, odour resistance, temperature regulation and elasticity. The sleeves on the crop top are made of circular knit jersey that is constructed out of 100 per cent Merino wool. This lightweight material has an elegant drape that contrasts with the structured look of the bodice. The second item I designed was a red skirt which is created using the same innovation and material as the bodice. However, I had to use a red satin lining on the inside, so I could achieve a neat, elegant finish to the top of the skirt. The boots are the last piece that make up the outfit. These are constructed out of laminated fabric with a 100 per cent Merino wool back and a 100 per cent cotton front. This material is very structured and soft against the skin making it perfect for a pair of boots. I chose to use wool in this way because of the suitability of the fibre’s unique moisture management properties. This ensures that moisture is absorbed by the material and dries quickly to avoid discomfort. LEANNE WHITEHOUSE, FOUNDER OF WHITEHOUSE INSTITUTE OF DESIGN
Hi Leanne, what did you like most about Chanelle’s designs? I could instantly tell that Chanelle had innovation in her design thinking. At Whitehouse, we want students to be explorative and conceptual in their design thinking, I could see that Chanelle was already doing this. We are looking forward to developing that further with Chanelle.
Can you tell us about the scholarship to Whitehouse? And what does the Bachelor of Design involve? The winner of the competition receives a scholarship into the Bachelor of Design at Whitehouse, where the student can choose to specialise in Fashion Design, Interior Design or Creative Direction and Styling. The Bachelor of Design is designed to provide students with outlook and ambition that extend beyond their studies, cultivating a collaborative and global vision of design. Leading designers employing Whitehouse graduates include Givenchy, Aēsop, Kenzo, Céline, Zimmermann, Prada, adidas and Louis Vuitton. What qualities do you look for in a student designer? Commitment to the industry. We want students who are hungry to learn, to design and to develop their thinking. What’s the secret to a great portfolio? Play, exploration and innovation. We want to see new, young designers showing that they can think differently, and that they can use this to create something new and exciting. Any advice for young designers starting out? Be brave, bonkers and brilliant. For info on how to enter this year’s Wool4School competition and be in the running to win a scholarship to Whitehouse Institute of Design visit WOOL4SCHOOL.COM

INTERVIEW
Women of Power Women’s suiting has never been on the same page as men’s. But a sister duo is setting out to change things.
What role does your grandma play in the brand now? She makes all our samples. She made all the prototypes and then we sent them off overseas. She’s been with us the whole way. It’s a full-on family business then? Yeah, our grandma’s so creative. We’ve got that flair from her side of the family (which is my dad’s side). He makes jewellery and is really creative with his hands. Your tagline is ‘For Women of Power’, what does that mean to you? For us, it’s about being yourself, not being afraid to take risks and encouraging one another. It’s about being fearless. Everything that power represents to us is our grandma, because she has always been fearless and has gone through a lot in her life, yet she manages to be positive and keeps doing what she loves, sewing. Can you describe your label’s style? We are the divide between masculine and feminine. Every product we design has masculine details with a feminine silhouette. Whether it’s an internal jacket pocket, or a men’s zip-up fly, we have dedicated the brand to proving that women can also wear high-level suiting and not just men. What other pieces can we expect? We added a small active capsule – a hoodie, a trackpant and some leggings – they’re a ’90s-inspired streetwear vibe. You’re going to see a lot of ’90s-inspired suiting and luxe streetwear. When’s the first collection drop? The Power collection is landing in late February and will be available online.
Growing up, dresses were never an option for identical twins Evie and Anna Kasimatis. The pair often asked their grandma to sew them suits instead, wearing them to weddings and any other time they could. They never grew out of the habit, and in 2018 we’re about to see why. Evie and Anna is the eponymous label launched by the duo, who grew tired of the lack of women’s options available in the suiting industry. After years of working for various men’s brands, Evie and Anna decided to launch their own. We sat down with co-founders Evie and Anna to discuss building a women’s suiting brand in 2018.
16
Can you tell us how Evie and Anna came about? The inspiration for the brand and first collection has been from our grandma. When we were really young she used to sew all our clothes. We never wore dresses and constantly dressed like boys. We always loved suits. We’d get [Grandma] to make up suits and go to weddings with them, Mum would be so embarrassed. Why women’s suiting? All the brands we worked for didn’t offer women’s styles… We found a bit of a gap and thought ‘let’s make these garments really high end but sell them at an average street price’.
What else is happening in 2018? We’re just going to test the waters and see what happens. I think mostly, it’ll continue as a suiting brand. We’ve discussed that we’d like to be the one-stop shop for chic suiting. If a woman needs a suit, she’ll think ‘great, I’ll get it from Evie and Anna.’ You can shop Evie and Anna’s first collection in late February. EVIEANDANNA.COM

MUSIC
New Wave WORDS BY NIKKI ESCALANTE
Following his rise to fame in 2015, Garrett Borns’ accolades now span a Coachella appearance, Lana Del Rey collaboration and praise from the late Prince himself.
Under the moniker BØRNS, Garrett’s love for art spills into his adventurous sense of style, which is as dynamic as his indie-pop vocals. He’s already caught the attention of the fashion industry through an archive of daring and androgynous looks. Last month saw the release of his sophomore album Blue Madonna, almost three years after LP Dopamine debuted with critical acclaim. We caught up with the talent ahead of his Australian tour, to chat songwriting, touring and the frenzy of New York Fashion Week. Congratulations on Blue Madonna. With three years between releases, what’s the reception been like? Thank you. It’s been good, it’s kind of an experiment getting into playing new music for theatre [settings], especially because me and my band pretty much hit the road right after it came out. You just never really know how people are going to react, but it’s been nice and exciting. What was the journey of making Blue Madonna like, compared to when you were first writing Dopamine? Blue Madonna is very different to Dopamine. I wanted to make songs that were a little more intricate and more involved to play live. Everyone in the band plays some pretty crazy things, so we were all on this roller-coaster together. [Dopamine] was really fun to perform, but I wanted to make something that reminds me of my favourite Beach Boys songs and Elton John. Were there any particular moments from the past three years that majorly influenced the record? I think just the experience, playing so many shows. I really learnt how to sing differently and just have more stamina. The muscle of performing and singing, and trying to be engaging, was definitely a challenge at times but I think it just made me a stronger performer. I kind of took that to the studio and the songs came off a little bit differently.
26
It’s funny, your mind can play tricks and tell you that you can only go so far, you only have enough battery power to make so much. On the road, you don’t really have a choice. You’re like, “alright, I have to perform tonight, no matter if I didn’t sleep last night.” I like those challenges because you really can break through into a different headspace like, “oh I actually can do this.” Did you ever get writer’s block throughout the process? I try to keep a constant flow of ideas, so when I do have an opportunity to get to the studio, I have concepts to go off. Writer’s block is kind of funny because most of the time, it’s like fitting something round into a square hole. Sometimes your ego is telling you “this is how it’s supposed to sound,” but your mind’s saying “you don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sometimes you just have to let the song write itself, which is easier said than done. Tell us about the title single ‘Blue Madonna’? What was it like working with Lana Del Rey? Lana’s incredible, she’s one of a kind. Her voice is so nostalgic and beautiful and sensual. It was really cool hearing her voice going through a microphone at the studio and onto one of my songs. We’d been talking for a while, and been wanting to do something. When I wrote that song, I kind of pictured her singing. I’ve always been a fan of her music, writing style and imagination. What was the experience like playing huge shows for festivals like Coachella and Falls? I have such amazing memories from playing all those festivals. Everything was so new when I was going from tour to tour. The shows kept getting bigger, the festivals were getting wilder. Falls Festival was so fun. I’m really excited to get back to Australia.
You’ve got an incredible sense of style. Is fashion something you’ve always loved? Thank you (laughs). I love what clothes do to you, they make you stand differently, walk differently or become a different character. Since I was really young, I always wanted to be characters in different scenarios. Of course, that definitely goes with performing and being on tour. I love experimenting with fashion, but I’m still getting to know the whole fashion world. When I was writing the record, I was really inspired by Frankie Valli and the ’80s era of David Bowie, where he was wearing this double-breasted baggy suit, so I kind of wanted to perform in that realm. What was it like being an ambassador for New York Fashion Week in 2017? It’s a crazy thing, Fashion Week. It’s very inspiring. I got to meet some of the designers from the shows I went to. It’s always interesting to see the man or woman behind the curtain and get their input because, most of the time, they’re very mellow and very softly spoken people. But a runway show can be so powerful, and such a spectacle. Would you ever branch out from music and pursue anything else? Yeah, music is just one element of my passion for art. I’m very involved in all the videos I do, like writing and directing. Film is a really important medium to me. I think music is just kind of an excuse to dive into all these other things – fashion, film and photography.
Blue Madonna is out now via Interscope Records.

The Melbourne-based brand handcrafts its pieces from natural materials and semi-precious stones, which are all individually hand cut and placed. Expect rings set in marble resin and topped with Australian goldstone, mookaite and anthracite (a rock formed from coal). The use of these varying materials means that no two pieces are alike, giving you a one-of-a-kind design every time. Alas the Label
Ovna Ovich
When it comes to sustainable PJs, you can’t go past Alas the Label. Every item is made from Global Organic Textile Standard certified cotton, printed using non-toxic dyes. The entire range is also produced in India under Fair Trade standards, from seed to cloth. Alas’ latest mini-collection Aquarius features both sleepwear and casual daywear, inspired by water and the way it catches the light. Think jumpsuits and nighties with reflective water prints and striped tees and pants in a marine colour palette. The result is a calming collection that seamlessly goes from day to night.
It’s easy to see how Ovna Ovich has won the hearts of many. Since its 2012 launch, the brand has committed itself to being environmentally and socially conscious. Through each Ovna Ovich piece, designer Marina Davis tells a story. Her material lineup spans plant-based fibres, leftover fabrics and ethically-sourced denim. With oversized collars, voluminous hems and multi-tiered pieces, Marina brings to light the creativity that can stem from low-impact production. Of course, the production process is right in line with the brand’s slow fashion philosophy. Every piece is designed and hand-sewn in New Zealand.

WeWood
The Road
Most people wear the same watch for years on end, so when investing in a new one, it needs to be for good reason. And we think we’ve found one. WeWood fashioned its first timepiece from recycled timber back in 2010. Today, the brand offers an expansive range made from 100 per cent recycled and reclaimed timber. Hypo-allergenic and free of toxic chemicals, each purchase is made better by WeWood’s commitment to planting a tree for every sale. New to the collection is the Albacore watch (pictured), a minimalist style timepiece with vintage-inspired dome glass, an adjustable flex-wood bracelet and titanium case.
The Road is setting out to prove that ethical fashion doesn’t have to be a luxury. The label makes basics from sustainably-sourced cotton, while still paying its workers in India a living wage. Every step of The Road’s process is ethically sound, from the Fair Trade farms it works with, to the dyes used in its mills. You’ll find an offering of basics online, including tees, tanks and underwear available in men’s and women’s styles. While many sustainable labels come at a price, The Road keeps its range affordable, proving just how accessible ethical clothing can be.

Sand & Sky Brilliant Skin Purifying Pink Clay Mask
What better way to welcome the new year than by washing away all of 2017’s impurities. We road tested five face masks promising to do just that.
FROM SANDANDSKY.COM PRICE $69.90 TYPE CLAY
I’m calling it. This is the best face mask on the market right now. The formula visibly brightened my complexion and gave my skin a healthy glow for several days after use. My acne was also positively impacted, with a slight reduction in size and redness of blemishes (no easy feat). Bonus points awarded for the accompanying application brush. RATING 5/5
Sukin Super Greens Detoxifying Clay Masque FROM SUKINORGANICS.COM.AU PRICE $16.95 TYPE CLAY
For $17, I wasn’t expecting to be wowed by Sukin’s mask. And, while my skin did feel fresher and slightly softer after use, it’s no game changer. Sure, it glides on easily and doesn’t feel too drying once on, but in the end it gets a solid ‘OK’ from me. RATING 3/5
Blaq Mask Tube Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask FROM SISLEY-PARIS.COM PRICE $180 TYPE CREAM
If I’m paying $180 for a 60ml face mask, I expect the ingredients to come from the Fountain of Youth. And with Sisley, I’m pleasantly surprised. Unlike many other face masks on the market, this product doesn’t leave heaps of residue on your face. Instead, the creamy texture melts into your skin, leaving your complexion soft, plump and rose-scented. RATING 5/5

Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque FROM KIEHLS.COM.AU PRICE $35 TYPE CLAY
This mask is super thick and feels like you’re smearing pure clay on your face, in the best possible way. The white clay works to remove impurities and dirt (working super well for blackheads) and leaves your skin feeling cleansed and refreshed. It also contains oatmeal for antiirritation, which gets a big tick from me.
FROM BLAQ.CO PRICE $24.99 TYPE PEEL
I’ve always wanted to try a charcoal peel face mask, and this was a great place to start. The formula is extremely thick and dries completely within 10 minutes. I’ll be honest – peeling it off kind of hurts, but the payoff is worth it. The mask comes off in one piece, so you’re not left with charcoal all over your face, removing impurities with ease. If you’re looking for a quick-fix blackhead remover, we’ve found it. RATING 3/5

The essential guide to language in the BuzzFeed age
YASMIN ZEINAB
EMMY J. FAVILLA
Like it or not, the internet has changed the way we write. A World Without “Whom” is penned by Emmy J. Favilla, the copy editor who was tasked with creating a style guide for BuzzFeed back in 2012. Yes, BuzzFeed has a style guide. And yes, it’s very comprehensive. A World Without “Whom” is a thought-provoking read for those working in the communications, journalism or editing fields. Or really anyone who writes (so basically all of you). While of course there are some grammar rules which shouldn’t be broken, A World Without “Whom” is an irreverent book that makes a case for throwing out the stuffy ones and writing how readers use language IRL. Favilla argues that language is alive and evolving, and there’s no such thing as correct ‘style’. She believes that if your writing is making the reader feel something, then you’re doing it right. We couldn’t agree more.
Historically, much of Paris has always been shut on Sundays. While times have somewhat changed, travellers can still be confronted with closed shopfronts and cafes come the weekend. Sundays* in Paris is a guide to the bustling pockets of activity, so you need never go without your next pastry or hunk of delicious Parisian cheese – even on the quietest of Sundays. The introductory chapter succinctly outlines the highlights and key sights in each of the city’s 20 arrondissements. It’s then broken into chapters including Coffee, Brunch, Dinner + Drinks, Cultural Attractions, Gardens + Outdoor Spots, Markets, Foodie Stops and Shopping. As a Melburnian who’s struggled to find a decent cup of coffee in Paris, the chapter on the city’s coffee culture was a welcome sight. It seems quality caffeine options are plentiful, if you know where to look.

LOWTIDE
It may seem like a while between drinks, but this former Hottest 100 winner and eight-time platinum songwriter says he wasn’t keen to rush the all-important second album. Although Joy’s music isn’t my personal cup of tea, Nation of Two delivers a rock solid set of indie-pop classics. ‘Lay It On Me’ rolls along, draws you in and delivers an uplifting anthemic chorus you can practically hear in the stadium show setlist already. It doesn’t let up; ‘We’re Going Home’ and ‘Saturday Sun’ are quintessential road trip tracks, while ‘Crashing Into You’ takes Joy’s patented lush layering and rolls it into a sweet love song. A strong sophomore.

One of Australia’s best-loved chefs, Luke Nguyen, has teamed up with acclaimed photographer Alan Benson to compile this compendium of street food. The duo travelled Asia together, venturing out at dawn and late into the night, to meet stallholders and capture the captivating energy of the region’s main streets and alleyways. Split into four sections – Saigon, Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur – each provides an overview of the city’s specialities and Luke’s favourite street vendors. In terms of the recipes, they’re easy to follow (I successfully tried my hand at a couple), with ingredients that are readily accessible at your local supermarket or Asian grocer. Part recipe book, part travel guide, Street Food Asia is a welcome addition to any cook or traveller’s collection.
If you were worried all the recent success for DZ has made them soft, the high-pitched scream opening ‘Shred For Summer’ proves they most certainly haven’t. Although they admit they went into this to write festival bangers. Thankfully the DZ swagger is still alive and well. ‘Total Meltdown’ is nostalgic in the best ways, harking back to the golden days when punk-tinged rock ’n’ roll was king. ‘High’ gives me all the heavy grunge feels. It’s another top-shelf delivery from one of our best, yet again. Come for the ‘Bad Influence’, stay for the ‘Witchcraft’.
Another band returning for their second stab at an album is Melbourne’s Lowtide, with the lush and magical Southern Mind. Although it’s only February, it’s hard not to think this album would have been better suited to a November release. Its dreamy layering would have been the perfect summer album but alas, summer is almost over. No matter, tracks like the Beach House-y ‘Alibi’ and the bright and airy ‘Window’ would do well to uplift us as we approach the long year ahead. As is the case with almost all shoegaze albums, the relentless dreaminess can become monotonous but, as a backing soundtrack to your busy life, I can’t imagine anything better.
