ey hey pals, Can you believe the year is already half gone? This means that a) we’re closer to summer, b) we’re closer to summer, and c) we’re closer to summer. Pretty good news, right? In other good news, this issue features kittens, puppies and other adorable animals. It came about when one of our favourite make-up artists, Ania Milczarczyk approached us to see if we’d like to team up with RSPCA New South Wales for an epic photoshoot. We couldn’t have been more excited. A passionate animal lover, Ania had the idea to shoot some of her favourite models with animals up for adoption from the RSPCA. Flick to page 34 to see the result and check out Ania’s Instagram for some serious make-up envy and inspiration – @aniamilczarczyk. This issue we also took to the streets of NYC, with an editorial that combines some of our favourite homegrown and international men’s fashion (p.26). The offshore theme continued as we caught up with Swedish starlet Tove Styrke (p.18) and met AnneMieke Ytsma, one half of kiwiborn jewellery label Underground Sundae (p.24).
Meet the Team It takes quite the squad to put together an issue of Fashion Journal. Meet some of the talented people that make it all possible.
My name is... Ania Milczarczyk. I did the make-up on pages 34-41 My closest celebrity encounter was... I believe I saw Soulja Boy in Hawaii. My boyfriend says it wasn’t but I wholeheartedly believe to this day it was. Otherwise I 100% saw LL Cool J in Times Square My MySpace song was... I think my brain blocked it out to save me the shame My biggest fashion disaster was... In year 9 or 10 I had bleached blonde hair with black on the bottom half and I had a brunette streak through the fringe. I wanted to be Xtina in the Dirrty film clip My fave beauty product is... Haha take one look at my Instagram and you will see I am obsessed with highlighter My best beauty tip is... Drink lots of water and stay out of the sun! The best advice I’ve ever received is... It’s a bit of a cheesy one but it is so true. “You can’t love anyone until you love yourself.” @aniamilczarczyk
My name is...Bonnie Kay. I styled the product spreads on pages 14-17 My all time favourite YouTube video is… Mr G’s interpretive dances You’re stuck on a desert island and you can only bring three TV shows to binge watch. What do you bring? Does this desert island have wifi for a Netflix subscription? My fave beauty product is... Crabtree and Evelyn Pomegranate Hand Therapy lotion I’m pretty sure nobody else does this but I.... Eat plain pasta and rice My MySpace song was... Modern Swinger by The Pink Spiders. I did change my songs weekly though The weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten is... I ate a truffle at Vue de Monde. Was not a fan My biggest fashion disaster was... these pants from Supré when I was a teenager. They were a white polyester flare with pink netting over the top. Yep. The best advice I’ve ever received is... “You need to grow a thicker skin.” @bonniekaythestylist
We also gathered our favourite lacies (p.14), learned that white > black (p.16), and reminded ourselves that denim on denim on denim is ok, provided you do it right (p.17). Until next month, Leah and Giulia x
My name is... Veronica Stanford. I interviewed Asta and Tove Styrke on pages 18 and 20 You’re stuck on a desert island and you can only bring three TV shows to binge watch. What do you bring? Broad City for comedic value, Keeping up with the Kardashians (I know what you are thinking, but there are so many episodes I will never run out) and Game of Thrones for my dramatic fix My last text message was from… My pal in Queensland, who was asking for an opinion on whether to buy printed Gorman pants (obviously I said yes) My MySpace song was... Thankfully I never had MySpace. I like to believe it would have been ‘Summer Love’ by J.T. In reality, it probably would have been closer to ‘Everytime We Touch’ by Cascada. @veronicastanford
08
My name is...Liv Rahmé. I styled the editorial on page 34 The weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten is... Kibbeh Nayye - basically raw meat. It’s a completely normal, very common Lebanese dish but I wouldn’t do it again! My closest celebrity encounter was... I have a few highlights... Meeting the Queen Bey when I was 11, I literally cried. I dressed Miranda Kerr for a couple of seasons when I was working with the styling team for David Jones’ fashion shows. Briefly met Kim Kardashian through my work for Westfield Parramatta (I’m the resident stylist there). I was flown interstate to style Victoria’s Secret supermodel Karolina Kurkova, she was so sweet! Aaand styled 5 Seconds of Summer for the ARIAs last year My fave beauty product is... Batiste dark brown dry shampoo. @livrah

Vans We are drooling over the two new colourways from Vans. The first is their Metallic Leather range and we’re feeling some serious futuristic vibes. It’s a gorgeous foiled antique bronze with black leather panelling and comes in their Sk8Hi Slim, Classic Slip-On and Old Skool styles. The distressed plaid colourway is on the opposite end of the scale, drawing inspiration from ’90s grunge fashion. Sneakers for days. For stockists call 1800 655 154

The collection was shot at LA’s Muscle Beach by photographer Derek Wood. Best location. Lingerie is always sweeter when it’s delicate, handmade and features a one-of-kind print. The thing we love most about lingerie is the feeling it gives us (and no, we don’t mean the soft lace against our skin… but that certainly helps). Whether you’re lounging ’round the house in sweet nothings or it’s hidden under layers of winter warmers, you feel sexy and powerful just knowing it’s there. We’ve picked out a few of our favourites from Alice Nightingale, Lonely Lingerie, Base Range, Fox in Jocks, and Rabbit and Hunter. So dainty, so lovely. You say black, we say white. While black might be the colour most people default to in winter, white should really be the obvious choice. It goes with everything, looks clean and fresh, and brightens up an outfit as well as our dull winter complexions. Incorporating white into your wardrobe can be tricky, so accessories are the best way to dip your toes in. Think hats, kicks, clutches and watches. Your dose of summer in the middle of winter. Denim has always been here to stay and we can’t really see that changing anytime soon. We’re not afraid of doubling it up but the key is to mismatch the washes. Tove’s latest album Kiddo has already received promising reviews and takes inspiration from her favourite film. “I really like Kill Bill. The sound all sort of comes from that and it was a big inspiration. The name Kiddo was partly inspired by the character Beatrix Kiddo. I also just love the word kiddo.” The music videos for her first two singles have also taken her to new places, travelling to Japan for ‘Ego’ and further for ‘Borderline’. “We went to the Arctic Island, Svalbard, which is like Russia’s North Pole. The song has a Rastafarian feel but it was probably too rational to go to Jamaica, so instead we went to this deserted place. There are more polar bears than people. Then for ‘Ego’, I had to try and top it. I wanted to do the opposite and go to one of the most crowded places on the planet. Japan is amazing, so many people who were so nice to us, the place is amazing. I recommend everyone go there.”
“I really like Kill Bill. The sound all sort of comes from that and it was a big inspiration.”
Cool Kiddo It’s no secret that Scandinavia seems to continually produce countless stylish and sweet-sounding musicians. The Swedish seem to have this down pat, offering up some of the world’s best indie-pop musicians including Lykke Li and sister act First Aid Kit. Our newest fave to come from the north is 21-year-old Tove Styrke, a dark-pop songstress who oozes urban cool and has the nicest voice. For those who aren’t familiar, Tove was originally discovered on Swedish Idol at the age of 16. After coming third, she signed with Sony Records and released a self-titled album. INTERVIEW BY VERONICA STANFORD
In 2012, after touring relentlessly, Tove abandoned her tour to move back to her small hometown in Sweden, unsure of whether she would return to her musical career. “I needed time to grow up and explore. To get to know who I was and my relationship with my music. I needed it to be something private again.” When asked why she decided to return to the scene, her answer is simple. “I never stopped writing the whole time I was away, so eventually I just had so much there, and so much inspiration, that I was ready to start putting it together. I went into the studio for
18
five days and recorded a bunch of songs, which all made it on the album.” The return to the scene saw the release of ‘Borderline’, a single which has been very successful internationally and cemented Tove as a musician one to watch. The upbeat reggae tune sees this track differ from Tove’s past releases, however this is not a consideration she makes when writing. “The album is all sort of the same, but at the same time it is different. I deliberately try not to constrain myself, or worry about everything being the same.”
It is apparent that travelling is a passion that Tove wants to explore further. “I spend half my time locked in the basement studio writing, which I really love. So then it is great to be able to go out and meet people and see the world and travel. I’ve been meaning to come to Australia for some time, I really want to try and come soon.” Style-wise, Tove’s dress sense is in every way as fantastic as her music. “I must be comfortable. I love that I can wear something that is comfortable, but you can also make a statement and it can be bold anyway. Clothes are a really great way to enhance the music. I can enhance different parts of my character that I think emphasise the core of the music.” Not only does she have a unique and totally cool style, she also seems to consistently rock amazing braided hairstyles. “I suppose that is my signature at the moment. It is really convenient especially for on stage.” When I mention that braids are the ‘in’ thing in Australia she laughs. “I will have to come then, come to the place where I can fit in.” Tove’s interests don’t just stop at music. “I am quite nerdy… for instance, I just made a video game. It will be out sometime next week, up on my website. It is called the Kiddo game and it is like a platform game. I put in there a bunch of different things, just a bunch of different places I have been, Svalbard for instance. There are also billboards of Britney and Justin [laughs] because I was really inspired with that for a while. And yeah the further you go, the more of the digital world of Kiddo you get to explore. It is fun.” Towards the end of our chat, I bring up the future and what it holds. “I just finished this one [album] and I am already quite eager to get started with new music. I think I will just keep going and keep writing on the road. A year from now I hope to still be touring and travelling a lot. Hopefully I will get to come and play in Australia.” Tove Styrke’s new album Kiddo is out now via Sony Music. tovestyrkemusic.com

Like Dynamite Three years ago, an 18-year-old Tasmanian with a sweet, folk voice caught the eyes of triple j. Asta was crowned the Unearthed High competition winner of 2012. Three years later and the singer has returned to the scene, with a slightly more eccentric and electronic sound. INTERVIEW BY VERONICA STANFORD
“The last two years, have gone very quickly,” she says, casting her mind back. “It has mainly just been writing and collaborating and really focusing on my sound.” The sound she describes can be heard in her latest single, ‘Dynamite’. “The song kind of just fell into it,” says Asta when asked about her inspiration for the new direction. “I actually wrote the song quite a long time ago, I think about a year ago now. I was really influenced by Daft Punk’s latest record. I think you can probably hear some of that with the electronic side of things.” Her latest hit, which has climbed its way up the iTunes chart, is also her first collaborative release, with rapper Allday joining in on the fun. “I loved his rapping and his rhythm and tone. We
20
had actually finished the song before we sent it to him. He recorded the vocals in Melbourne and then sent it back the next day. I was so amazed by it, it just suited really well.”
“I find it really fun to collaborate with designers and local artists. I come up with costumes, I secretly love designing clothes.” So well in fact, that the two toured together last month, though Asta remained pretty tight lipped
about anything further. “A joint collaboration may be happening.” One thing is for sure, fans can expect no less than bold outfits on stage. “I find it really fun to collaborate with designers and local artists. I come up with costumes, I secretly love designing clothes. I guess if I wasn’t singing I might have been a fashion designer. It’s another dream of mine. I love creating clothes and something that is really special.” Aside from this secret love, Asta does not make quiet her foodie lifestyle, which she writes about on her blog Superfood Rockstar. “I think I was just between touring and I guess I had a lot of time to make food. It is something I am really passionate about, sourcing food locally and cooking vegetarian food. I guess eating healthy - I mean I know that back in the day being a rock star was all about taking drugs [laughs].” As far as signature dishes, the Tasmanian beauty likes to keep things simple. “I love making dip. Come over to my house, have a cup of tea and have some tapas dishes. I am really good with beetroot dip and pesto.” When asked what the future will hold, Asta is very modest. “The future! Ohhh… I just hope to be touring the world. That is my dream. I don’t know if that is going to happen in the next couple of years but I just want to be able to play shows and that is my biggest goal.” astamusic.com

Under the Skin
“ I’d heard of Mima through a couple of friends and one night she came over to my house because I was having a party. We hung out, chatted about jewellery and hit it off.” After hitting it off at a house party, it didn’t take long for Mima Bulj and Anne-Mieke Ytsma to combine talents. The pair decided to channel each other’s different personality into creating Underground Sundae, the perfect mix of elegant and “not-taking-yourself-too-seriously” jewellery. Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, the pair soon picked up and moved their label to Melbourne. We spoke to Anne-Mieke about house parties, creative inspiration, finding her feet in Australia and the label’s newest collection SKIN. INTERVIEW BY SAVANNAH ANAND-SOBTI
On how the label started... I studied jewellery in Dunedin, graduated in 2006 and I’ve been making jewellery ever since then. I had started making for another label and that went well, so I started my own brand. I’d heard of Mima through a couple of friends and one night she came over to my house because I was having a party. We hung out, chatted about jewellery and hit it off. I went away to NZ Fashion Week and when I came back I was swamped because I was doing everything myself. I really loved the ideas we’d been talking about so we decided to do a collection together. It went well, so we’ve just kept doing it. On splitting the workload... I do most of the making and production because that’s my background and we work on the ideas together. Mima is really good at the marketing side and because she’s been in Melbourne for a while, she knows heaps of people. It’s really great to have someone who’s in the know.
24
On moving to Melbourne... I had quite a few friends move here so it made sense. Mima’s also from New Zealand, but she’s been here for 11 years and I’ve been here for just two and a half. I’d built my brand up in New Zealand and knew a lot of people from the industry there, so coming here was a bit scary. Mima and I are really different but it works so well. We bring out the best in each other. On coming up with a name... Well Underground Sundae was an advert Andy Warhol made for an ice cream shop in NYC. My boyfriend at the time was a painter who always made funny little things. He made these sunglasses out of cardboard and wrote Underground Sundae on the side. I looked at them and thought, “hey, that’s a really cool name.” I had already made jewellery under my own name, but I wanted to keep my name for my art pieces and start with something fresh for the brand.
On creating a film with Amy Dellar of Indoor Fountains... I think we were wanting to do something that brought the whole collection together, to show the ideas and feelings behind it. We’d worked on SKIN for a long time and it was our first cohesive collection together. Mima knew Amy and had this crazy idea of using live snakes. It took a while but we finally found a guy with pet snakes. I made some special pieces for it and Amy and Mima worked together on the creative direction. A friend of mine who’s starting a lingerie brand called Liar Liar made some pieces for the film and a friend came and took photos. It was a nice collaboration. On their inspiration... We really wanted to use snakes for SKIN and make a collection that was a bit more refined than what we’ve done in the past. We wanted to use gold, silver, gemstones and have pieces that you could wear every day that become almost like a second skin, or a part of your identity. We like to have a play on tacky mass-produced jewellery and turn it into precious metals and indispensable pieces. I just bought some diamonds, so I think I might introduce them into the next collection too. On their plans for this year... We’re working on a collection that’s all about charms. Mima’s in Serbia so she’s taking photographs of people with their own personal charms. When she goes back we’ll relate that back to Underground Sundae. undergroundsundae.com

Blonde Made Healthy We think winter is the perfect time to change up your locks and head for a lighter and brighter shade. Thankfully, going blonde is nowhere near as tough on your hair as you once thought. The new technology gods and goddesses have advanced hair products so much in recent times, that achieving your desired dyed look is actually far less damaging than you think. The reason? Niophlex. Niophlex is one product you want to become familiar with if you like to change up your hair colour on the regular. When used in conjunction with bleach and traditional colour services, Niophlex works to make sure damage is prevented before it even starts. It can also be used as a standalone treatment to repair damaged hair. Adding bonds, elasticity and strength to the hair follicle it works so well that TONI&GUY’s Jack Morton says that damaged blonde hair will “become a thing of the past.” toniandguy.com.au
Napoleon Says We are no strangers to winter skin that looks so dull you want to hide all day in bed. While bed is great, unfortunately hibernating for three months is a pretty impractical option. So we turned to the make-up king, Napoleon Perdis, to get some inside tips. How does winter affect a person’s skin? Constant temperature changes draw the moisture out of your skin, leaving your skin feeling dehydrated, tight and dry. Dehydration affects the top layers of your skin, emphasising fine lines and even causing flakiness. How do you up your moisturiser game and fight dry skin in winter? Introduce a serum. Your body needs both food and water to survive; your skin is the same. Serum is the food that delivers vitamins and an energy boosting bounce while moisturiser provides optimal hydration. How do you boost a dull complexion in winter? Start with a cleanser that helps to soften dead skin cells and boost hydration levels. From there, follow a strict serum and moisturising routine and introduce a primer or luminiser to optically re-texturise the skin. A flush of colour is always important to add life to the face. Try a warm peach on the apples of the cheeks and blend close to the nose to mimic a natural glow. napoleonperdis.com

CHINA RICH GIRLFRIEND
THE GIRL IN THE ICE
YOU BEAUTY!
Kevin Kwan
Lotte and Søren Hammer
Tiffiny Hall
Well the name pretty much says it all. As with its predecessor Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend is all about the excessively lavish lifestyles of China’s upper upper upper elite. Kind of like Gossip Girl, but a bajilloon times richer. We’re talking moat-surrounded bathtubs, designated Birkin bag holding rooms and antique bracelets from 650 BC worn as casually as a Fitbit. Yes, it is a novel, but there is no way author Kevin Kwan could make up some of the detail in this book. He must have some sort of first-hand insight. In which case, who is this Kwan? Is he crazy rich too? Can he take me out?
Public Service Announcement: If you’re not well acquainted with the genre aptly named Scandi-noir, you need to be. And Lotte and Søren Hammer are a good place to start. Their slowly developing, intelligent read Girl in the Ice will grip you from the start. Not in a keeps-you-guessing, omg-I-did-not-see-that-coming kind of way. More in a well written way. It’s covertly gripping.... if that makes sense. Give yourself a moment to memorise characters names (read: Trond, Arne and Steen), and you’ll soon be in this Scandi-noir hole. In which case, I have plenty more recommendations. Email me.
Confession. I’m a real sceptic when it comes to good looking, well-proportioned women dishing out advice to love thyself (I’m looking at you Miranda Kerr). So I was pleasantly surprised when I read You Beauty!, even despite that cringe-worthy exclamation mark. Full of information, not just advice, it educates readers around health, nutrition and exercise. Plus it’s quite pretty inside. At times the book did become a little preach-y, and there are some questionable tips (no Tiffiny, I’m not going to swap sugary biscuits for vegie sticks). But overall it seems to foster mindfulness around health. Which can only be a good thing, no?
ALBUM REVIEWS THE FOOL Ryn Weaver Ryn burst onto the scene almost a year ago with the Charli XCX-penned ‘Octohate’, racking up over a million listens in the process. The track, which is an infectious mix of twinkling xylophones and a feisty melody, instantly made Ryn “one to watch” and still remains a stand-out on her debut album. Teaming up with both Passion Pit and Benny Blanco on production duties, The Fool unfortunately doesn’t completely live up to the hype. Admirably, the album doesn’t just churn out ‘Octohate’ clones and attempts a number of genres & styles - but it doesn’t all stick. The title track comes close, with its alt-folk leanings that transform into a EDM banger in the last minute. There’s still a spark or two here though, and worth seeing where Ryn heads next.

HOW BIG, HOW BLUE, HOW BEAUTIFUL Florence and the Machine I have to say, ‘What Kind of Man’ set my expectations sky high for Florence’s return. It’s a punchy, edgy single with a killer video that showed real growth from her previous work. Despite not being the bombastic album I was expecting, Florence’s third album is in fact quite a reserved set of songs that reward multiple listens. There may not be an iconic, sky high moment here, but the strength of the songwriting shines through. The lush and ornate arrangements are easily the highlight here. The orchestral outro to the title track is one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard all year. With this album, Welsh proves that you don’t need to be explosive in order to leave a lasting impression.
JANUS Ella Thompson After numerous collaborations in the Melbourne indie scene, Ella Thompson’s solo debut album Janus charges out the gate with an infectious, off-kilter energy that’s hard to pin down. There’s a strong Phil Specter “wall of sound” vibe throughout the album, which may be a little much to take in on first listen. Musical influences are all over the map too, from electro dance, punk and ’50s rock. The genius of Janus is that John Castle’s production somehow unifies everything into a cohesive whole. It’s one of those albums that feels like a journey, which is apt – Janus is also the name of the Roman God of beginnings and transitions. Ella has created a woozy, dreamlike world full of hooks and a confidence rarely seen from a debut record. It might just take a couple rides to sink in.

Out & About Grey Gardens launch This month saw Melbourne’s cool kids flock to Fitzroy for the launch of Grey Gardens, a self-titled ‘mixed space’ and new arts and culture hub. The space will shape shift between a gallery, project space, coffee bar and larder, and be the new permanent home of the formerly itinerant Speakeasy Cinema. As you can see, it’s a pretty cool spot. The event saw the hipsters were out in full force, and in true Melbourne style, everyone was dressed in black. Which was a nice contrast to the interior. greygardensprojects.com
Leica Q launch Known for their high quality and timeless cameras, Leica threw a launch party at Captains of Industry last month to celebrate the newest addition to their product range, Leica Q. It's a digital compact camera which is super-easy to use and perfect for street to landscape photography. Melbourne-based street photographer, Jesse Marlow, spoke on the night about his experiences testing out the new camera. He also unveiled some of his favourite photos and shared his top street photography tips. So handy. leica-camera.com
