INTRODUCTION Festivals are a pretty big deal. Just about every culture in the world has found some reason for an annual shindig where people come together to dance, feast, worship, sacrifice virgins or set fire to things (or all of the above), and judging by this year’s crop we won’t be stopping anytime soon. (Let’s just stay away from the virgin sacrifice and fire-starting, shall we? Besides, there’s way more fun stuff to do instead now like bouncy castles and nude three-legged races. But I digress…) We humans seem to have a primal urge to gather in some far distant field and pay tribute to the gods of music and the arts. Or maybe festivals are just a great excuse to sink tins under our glorious southern sun. Either way, festivals pretty much rule the party scene, and even the pickiest of punters could find something they love out there. Hopefully you’ll get your festival fix somewhere in this year’s Big Ticket.
Inside you’ll find a comprehensive guide to the best of Aussie festivals, plus some hints and tips which can help make your festival experience just that bit more special. Well, there is at least a handy checklist which is guaranteed to prevent you spending four days in the wilderness with third-degree sunburn, hypothermia, and/ or trench-foot. Plus there’s a sustainability guide so you can tread a little more lightly on those hallowed festival grounds. There’s even festival trivia to help pass the time on the long trip to that far distant field, where people come together to dance, feast, worship and bounce naked on inflatable castles… or whatever it is that floats your festival boat. Enjoy the trip. Julian Douglas

Make sure you bring: Enough to share. Your best friend. Loin cloth. Which act, dead or alive, would you bring out to headline and why? The Great and Powerful Oz… because because because. Justin Bieber attends your festival. Why does he walk away a better person? He meets some people who really understand his pain. He joins a drum circle, then meditation, body paint, soma, and hippy logic sort him right out. Last we saw, he left on a bus headed for Nimbin with a flower in his hair. The zombie apocalypse begins. What do you do next? Feed them the meth heads? A couple conceive a child at your festival. What is the kid’s name and how does it turn out? Purple. He’s a cool cat in the future, breaks down old paradigms, reunites the tribes, manifests reality, wears funny t-shirts, scruffy hair… kinda like baby Jesus. What is the possibility of your festival releasing Hypercolour t-shirts? Actually it’s really hard to find the tech anymore, and we have tried. Hypercolour defined a generation! We will not sleep until this is achieved.

The Jezabels
Make sure you bring: Your ticket. Cash for important things like beer & food. Your phone to take rad selfies with random celebrities in attendance. A tent if you’re camping. A change of undies. Which act, dead or alive, would you bring out to headline and why? Snoop Dog & Dr Dre. That whole Coachella show, Tupac Hologram and all. It’d be worth it just to see the look on some of the locals faces! Justin Bieber attends your festival. Why does he walk away a better person? Have you had a Calamari Cone before? Everyone is a better person after eating one of those. That and he’d experience all that Queenscliff has to offer! The zombie apocalypse begins. What do you do next? I’d surround my house with treadmills. A couple conceive a child at your festival. What is the kid’s name and how does it turn out? Cliff (see what I did there?!). He turns out to be a music-loving hippy with a keen taste for calamari and gozleme. What is the possibility of your festival releasing Hypercolour t-shirts? We’re just cancelling all merch orders as we speak so we can get them… brilliant idea.

RAINBOW SERPEANT FESTIVAL When? Friday January 23 ± Monday January 26, 2015
VIP Options: At Rainbow Serpent Festival, we are all VIP’s.
Where? Lexton ± Western Victoria
Make sure you bring: Water, and refill container. Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Warm clothes and spare clothes (conditions at night can be cold). Camping equipment, tent, sleeping bag, tarp and poles for shade. Swimming gear (for the short trip to the pool party or to visit the local lake). Spending money, torch, earplugs. Dancing feet, smile, costumes and anything fun!
Who? Beats Antique, Desert Dwellers, Christopher Lawrence, Audiomatic, Electric Universe, Marcel Dettmann, Lee Burridge, Petar Dundov, Vaishiyas, Laughing Buddha, Broken Toy, Pena, Ben Coda, Odjbox, The Floozies, Kukan Dub Lagan, James Copeland, Solid Snake, Symbolic, Treavor Moontribe, Amani, Perfect Stranger, LOUD, Rinkadink, Talpa, Super + heaps more to come! Tickets? Early Bird ± SOLD OUT, General Presale ± $320 + BF On the Gate (if available) ± $360 The Philosophy: Tucked away at the end of midsummer is a uniquely Australian celebration of culture, art, music and people: smiling beings from around the globe, all aware of their connectedness, united around a common purpose. As anyone who’s experienced Australia’s premier alternative festival before will tell you, Rainbow is Rainbow because of Everybody. So make it happen, make it resonate, make it sing. Dust off your finest smiling gear, because the countdown to Rainbow Serpent 2015 has officially begun. Eco Friendly / Sustainability: The Rainbow culture has always embodied respect for self, others and the land that becomes our playground. By bringing to the site only what you intend to take home with you, you leave the land beautiful and your culture a little cleaner. We go to immense lengths to minimize waste: we spend ten hours (or more) per day separating and reclaiming all the good things that would otherwise go to landfill. Everything used on site is recycled/re-used/composted, but no matter how hard the festival works to recycle we rely on you to reduce your waste in the first place.

Justin Bieber attends your festival. Why does he walk away a better person? Justin only becomes a better person when Justin becomes self-aware and Rainbow shines a light on the quieter corners of your soul. No seriously… we’re going to lock Justin in the info tent all weekend and show him Rap News on repeat ± that should get through to him. The zombie apocalypse begins. What do you do next? If only we had a place to congregate outside of the city, a place where we can all live harmoniously with each other… a place with compost toilets and large speaker stacks and inappropriate lycra. Loud music doesn’t attract them does it?? A couple conceive a child at your festival. What is the kid’s name and how does it turn out? I can probably find out if you want. I know of more than a few kiddies that were conceived at Rainbow and to date they all seem completely normal, other than a slightly increased tendency to lose it when they hear 138 bpm progressive trance. What is the possibility of your festival releasing Hypercolour t-shirts? I’d say there’s more chance of seeing Justin Bieber at Rainbow to be honest. All the kids were doing Hypercolour back in the 90’s. Our garment range has grown vastly in sophistication since then and you won’t find piffle like that at Rainbow. We’re all about pink tutus, crossdressing and groomed moustaches these days.

Which act, dead or alive, would you bring out to headline and why? Any iconic Aussie band or musician to get the crowd moving and singing along. Justin Bieber attends your festival. Why does he walk away a better person? Because he just experienced the best of Australian music alongside over 400,000 people on an Australian beach in summer. It would be a good “learning” experience for him… The zombie apocalypse begins. What do you do next? Jump in the beautiful St Kilda Beach (Zombies can’t swim!). A couple conceive a child at your festival. What is the kid’s name and how does it turn out? It’s a boy named Theodore; he grows up to a successful career in the music industry and writes for the Good Food Guide, still loves and lives in St Kilda, attends the festival every year and is now only referred to as Ted. Ted is never lonely in a crowd. What is the possibility of your festival releasing Hypercolour t-shirts? Extremely possible now we have the idea… thanks guys.

Tricky Trivia
So – you’re on the road to your favourite festival with your favourite friends and boredom starts to set in. How on earth can you pass the time? Well, look no further than the Big Ticket Road Trip section to while away the hours. Enjoy!
Part 1 (1 point)
Game 1: The Alphabet Game
Choose a topic (something broad like ‘performers’ is best). Start at A and go around the car progressing through the alphabet, e.g. AC/DC, Brian Jones, Ray Charles, The Doors, Eazy E. If you manage to double up on a letter (Eazy E), it acts like the reverse card in Uno, and the direction of play goes backwards until the next double. Use a stopwatch (one minute is generous), and if a player fails to come up with something, they’re out. Last one standing wins.
Game 2: No, it’s not _____
The quiz master starts by thinking of a common word, easy to rhyme, like ‘mate’. They offer a clue, e.g. “I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with ‘plate’, but it isn’t ‘state’.” The other players take turns asking cryptic questions to stump the quiz master, e.g. “Do you use it to catch fish?” The quiz master responds, “No, it’s not ‘bait’,” and so on. If the quiz master can’t guess the cryptic clue, they lose. If another player guesses the right clue, they win, and become the quiz master.
Game 3: The Wave Game
This game is simple and lasts the whole trip. Each player must wave to people outside the car – pedestrians, people in other cars etc. If you get a smile back, it’s worth one point. If you get a wave, it’s worth two points. If someone flips you the bird, it’s worth five points. Any vocalised response shall be awarded points on a sliding scale based on the aggression/hilarity of what they say. The person with the most points at the end gets a free drink from the other passengers.

FESTIVAL GREEN GUIDE While some people out there might be looking forward to endless summers and living closer and closer to the ocean, a lot of people these days are doing their bit to make sure they minimise their environmental impact. Punters and promoters alike have a responsibility to make sure their carbon footprints don’t dirty up their beautiful festival surroundings. So what can you do to make sure Mother Earth isn’t wearing your grubby boot-marks? Just follow some of these simple tips so your festival fun times won’t make the koalas cry.
Go abovE and bEyond:
We’ve all seen the horrible aftermath left at the end of the night when thousands of people have had their day in the sun, with bottles, cans, trash and discarded onesies strewn far and wide. So why not try to shift the paradigm? It’s not just about finding a bin during the day, it’s about setting an example for all the flatearth denialists out there who think the world is their ashtray. Find a bin and spend 20 minutes grabbing whatever you can find. Some festivals even offer drink tokens for every bag of recycling you return, so it’s a pretty easy equation: Earth love = Free booze. And who knows what else you might find? Karma will smile on you, guaranteed. Plus there’s way less chance of people getting sprains and cuts from run-ins with discarded empties. Win-winwin.
CarPool:
So you’re packing up the car and heading to your favourite festival? Make sure you’re sharing the ride to minimise your impact. It’ll also reduce those long entry queues on the way in. A lot of festivals have Facebook pages now, so if you have spare seats or want to catch a lift, get on there and see who else is going your way. Plus you get to share petrol costs and maybe make some new friends. Win-win.
rE-uSE and rECyClE:
Like… duh. Every festival should have both rubbish and recycling bins on site (if they don’t, well… boycott?), so there’s no excuse for laziness when it comes to disposing of your empties and waste. Take a water bottle with you and refill it, avoid food/ drink options that come with non-recyclables, and be wary of where your ciggie butts, napkins and broken thongs end up. If you are using a plastic cup, take it back to the bar for a refill rather than getting a freshie each time. If you’re at a BYO gig, maybe consider taking spirits and 2L mixers, and re-using your drinking vessel ± a standard bottle of spirits has about as many drinks as 15 stubbies, plus less need for ice/refrigeration. And goon is the greenest of them all!
Go Solar:
There’s a pretty awesome array of lights and other gadgets available these days that are powered by nothing but glorious (and free) sunshine. You can light your campsite (also good to stop people stumbling onto your tent), fan yourself, charge your phone and even chill things ± a nd they’re all surprisingly cheap at hardware stores and $2 dollar shops.
44
and finally…
If you notice your favourite festival might not be doing its part for the planet, don’t be shy to speak up. It doesn’t take much negative PR for people to clean up their act if they risk losing the almighty dollar. What if there was a carbon offset box you could tick when booking your tickets? What if every festival managed to recycle, re-use or compost all their waste? It’s already happening around the place, but it’s not quite the norm yet. Small voices can inspire big changes, so imagine what a whole festival chorus could do! It’s not too hard to leave the campsite/ festival grounds as you found them, and you can head home pretty pleased with yourself and basking in the warm glow of Mother Earth love. And the best bit? It’s sustainable for the environment, so we can do it all again, year after year after year. Yes please.
