❂ SUMMER DAYS

Alexander Thatcher Editor

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN I don’t know why every year I’m surprised at how fast another one has passed. It doesn’t help that Christmas decorations came out in some stores as early as September, but there you go. I find Christmas is both wonderful and sparkly (I especially like the sparkly part) and often stressful. My workload goes pretty much thought the roof and I feel like I need a PA just to keep up with my crazy schedule. It’s easy to become overwhelmed if I forget to stop occasionally and reflect (which I often do) on what this time of year really means to me and what’s important. As a nation, we have greater levels of wealth, health and material possessions than ever in our history. Yet we are recording our highest levels of depression and anxiety. Polls report increased feelings of hopelessness, and lower levels of contentment and a sense of wellbeing. This is often exacerbated over the Christmas period. Psychologists refer to this phenomenon as the ‘Happiness Trap’. Recent research suggests that many of us get caught in a vicious cycle in which the more we strive for happiness, the more it eludes us. Christmas can be a time filled with joy, but like anything else it has it’s imperfections and pitfalls. Knowing this can help you navigate through it safely and with less expectations if at the end of the day it doesn’t look like a scene from an American movie. In a special feature by Julia O’Boyle, we have a closer look at Christmas and suggest ways that you can feel happier, more content and less stressed than in previous years. p31.

I think what I love the most about this time of year are those long warm days when I hear the beach calling my name. On that first day when I pull my swimmers out from the bottom of the draw and a few grains of sand fall to the floor from the year before, I always smile; knowing that summer has just started. In the spirit of summer days and trips to the beach, FUSE fashionista and money guru Scott Malcolm had the arduous task of having to interview the very lovely and amazingly hot ex-rugby league player Casey Conway, in his swimmers — poor Scott. Casey is a swimwear model for Sluggers (yes there are photos) and in our interview he shares his thoughts on being an Aboriginal gay boy from the country and his life in the world of modelling. p23. So as not to leave out our female readers, FUSE also tracked down a group of passionate Miami girls that have created a special line of swim and sports wear for women that don’t fit into the binary-norm. Their line of summer clothing caters for all different shapes and sizes, including stuff especially designed for tomboys and transgendered people. p34. Enjoy, Alex

MOVIES

DID YOU KNOW? James Bond is a fictional character created by novelist Ian Fleming in 1953. There are now 24 movies in the series, Spectre opens 12 November 2015.

SPECTRE OPENS 12 NOVEMBER An award winner at Sundance earlier in the year and an audience Bond is back — as is Daniel Craig as 007 — and so, too, is an old enemy. SPECTRE, a clandestine evil operation has risen from the dead, and while producers are being coy about whether or not old foe Blofield is in charge, we do know that two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz is among the villainous ranks. Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydeaux (Blue Is The Warmest Colour) are also in this 24th installment of the Brit spy franchise, which once again sees success Sam Mendes (Skyfall) at the helm. Let’s just hope Sam Smith’s theme song (The Woeful Writing’s on the Wall) wasn’t an omen of what’s to come.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII : THE FORCE AWAKENS OPENS 18 DECEMBER Unless you have been living under a rock in a galaxy far, far away then you are well aware that the seventh film in the Star Wars franchise is about make every fanboy and sci-fi geek’s Christmas come one week early. Set after the events of Return of the Jedi (the third film but sixth chapter), The Force Awakens sees original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill on hand to mentor the next generation, which includes Adam Driver (Girls) and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis). The ‘Box Office’ Force will be massively strong with this one.

THE DANISH GIRL OPENS 26 DECEMBER It may be too soon for Eddie Redmayne to win another Best Actor Oscar (the last guy to go back-to-back was Tom Hanks in 1993-94), but the Theory of Everything star will be among the thick of awards season again this year, as will his leading lady, Alicia Vikander (Ex-Machina). The pair play real life Belgian artists, Einar and Gerda Wegener, whose marriage undergoes an extraordinary challenge when Einar begins living life as a woman, Lili; and becomes the first person to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Matthias Schoenaerts and Amber Heard also star in Tom Hooper’s prescient period drama.

FUSE MOVIE PICK OF THE MONTH!

CAROL OPENS 14 JANUARY Speaking of too soon, what’s the chance Cate Blanchett could win her third Oscar (just two years after winning for Blue Jasmine)? Todd Haynes’ 1950s-set drama, based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (of Talented Mr. Ripley fame) won rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, and co-star Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) won the Best Actress prize. But it’s Queen Cate whose earning the plaudits as a high society New York wife who begins an affair with a department store sales girl (Mara). Like Haynes’ previous 1950s melodrama Far From Heaven, Carol promises to be an emotional and exquisite-looking experience.

ROUND UP

PUTIN CLAIMS TO CONDEMN HOMOPHOBIA AND SUPPORT LGBT RIGHTS President Vladimir Putin has made some very unexpected comments during a recent interview with CBS, where he claimed that homophobia in Russia has been “deliberately exaggerated”, commenting, “I believe there should not be any criminal prosecution or any other prosecution or infringement of people’s rights on the basis of their race, ethnicity, religious or sexual orientation.”

THE AIDS ACTION COUNCIL TURNS 30 On the first of October the AIDS Action Council hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate thirty years of action in Canberra and to launch their new corporate identity. The unveiling took place at the Council’s new home at Havelock House in Turner and was officiated by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, Philippa Moss the Executive Director and Dr Nathan Boyle who is the current President of the AIDS Action Council. Philippa Moss told FUSE Magazine that the AIDS Action Council was excited to be in their new offices and that the new logo amongst other things represented strength, hope and the community coming together around action. She said the Council’s vision statement ‘Getting to zero in our community’ is something that she, staff members, volunteers and the board hold close to their hearts everyday and that she was proud to be part of such a dedicated and hard working team.

He went on to say, “People of non-traditional sexual orientation work, they live in peace, they get promoted, they get state awards for their achievements in science and arts or other areas.” When asked about Russia’s controversial gay “propaganda” law he argued that, rather than suppress individuality and freedom, the law protects minors in Russia, allowing them to “realise who they are for themselves.” “I believe we should leave kids in peace. We should give them a chance to grow, help them to realise who they are and decide for themselves. Do they consider themselves a man or a woman? A female? A male? Do they want to live in a normal, natural marriage or a non-traditional one? That’s the only thing I wanted to talk about.”

DAYS OF OUR LIVES KILLS OFF GAY CHARACTER Days of Our Lives, one of the longest-running TV programs in the world, has killed off one of its main gay characters, making him the latest victim of a serial killer. It is of course a very complicated and long plot line, but in short... Will Horton (Guy Wilson) who some time back survived a gunshot wound and over the past few years has been on a painful journey coming to terms with being gay was strangled with a necktie by his cousin’s fiancé Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson) — who is an evil serial killer. Oh and he’s like totally hot by the way and you should Google him now! Anyway, Ben (the hot evil guy) who’s engaged to marry Abigail Deveraux, (Will’s cousin) who’s secretly in love with Chad and also carrying Chad’s child, which she doesn’t know because Ben’s dad, Clyde, switched the paternity test results and oh, he’s also a drug kingpin. So, Will finds out that Ben is the killer and we all know what that means... Yep Ben gets his tie out and brutally strangles the life out of him. Did you get all that?

Days of Our Lives fans all over the world are understandably in shock over Will’s untimely death. FUSEMAGAZINE.COM.AU

ROUND UP GOOD NEWS FOR TRANSGENDER PRISONERS Kerala’s Viyyur Central Jail in India has announced that it will introduce a cell block reserved for transgender prisoners to keep them safe from other inmates. Kerala’s state prison department says there are around 40 transgender prisoners across its 52 prisons, which house a population of around 8,000 offenders. Transgender prisoners are currently placed in jails depending on the gender they were assigned at birth, exposing them to sexual violence and other forms of harassment. The director general of jails in Kerala State, Loknath Behera, told the Hindustan Times that transgender prisoners should not have to fear living openly in prison.

“I’M TIRED OF ALL THE ATTACKS ON KIM DAVIS’ FASHION CHOICES. I MEAN, NO OUTFIT IS GOING TO LOOK GOOD WHEN YOU ACCESSORISE WITH BIGOTRY.” — BETTE MIDLER Kim Davis — once an unknown Clerk in the US State of Kentucky — has now become a household name. Her image and views are plastered all over the internet and understandably everyone’s got something to say about her. #KimDavis If you’ve not heard about Kim Davis she’s the US County Clerk, that citing “the authority of God”, refused to issue licenses to same-sex couples despite the new US laws that made state-level bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. Understandably, many people have taken Davis to task for not doing her job as an elected official, but it seems that the very heated argument has become personal and off point. Bette Midler really hit the nail on the head with her recent tweet (above) and as one blogger wrote on Daily Kos, a political site: “It’s too easy to fall into the game of shaming people on their appearance, whether they are sexually attractive... or whether they are old and white.” It’s time to take a step back people.

‘Their requirements are different. We have to be more sensitive towards their problems. Such a move will help them to come forward and identify themselves without any taboo. We are sure such dedicated blocks will help end some of their miseries. We will protect their privacy also.’ Behera said.

POLISH PRESIDENT SHATTERS THE HOPES OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE Transgender people in Poland were deeply disappointed when their President Andrzej Duda, vetoed a bill for gender recognition after 252 MPs voted for it, with 158 against, and 11 abstained. The Gender Accordance Act had been hailed as a piece of legislation that would have brought Poland in line with the Council of Europe standards, and would have allowed any Polish citizen to legally change their gender with two expert opinions. Sirpa Pietikainen, Vice-President of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights, said: ‘We are extremely shocked and disappointed by the President’s decision to veto the bill. His veto demonstrates his unwillingness to recognise trans people, showing his disrespect for human rights as a whole.’ The Polish Parliament can only overturn the President’s veto with a 3/5 majority.

PAPARAZZI #THATSNOTCOOL @justinbieber what do you feed that thing. #proud daddy :-)️ — October 9, 2015 Justin Bieber’s old man has taken to Twitter to comment on his son’s penis size — which is either cool or creepy, we’ll let you decide. It was in response to a full-frontal photo taken by the Paparazzi with a super long lens thingie. Bieber was just trying to enjoy some private time in Bora Bora, no wonder he gets pissed with the Paparazzi.

DID YOU KNOW : The bristle toothbrush, was invented in China (1498). The bristles were the coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog’s neck and attached to handles made of bone or bamboo.

NANO-B SILVER, GOLD & CHARCOAL TOOTHBRUSHES This is a match made in dental heaven. Think “half-and-half”, the bristles are half gold and half bamboo charcoal. The creators at Nano-b did this to try and solve as many oral health issues with one toothbrush as possible. So they merged the antibacterial properties of gold with the natural whitening powers of bamboo charcoal. The result is a toothbrush that is not only beautiful but your teeth will also thank you as well.

ADJUSTABLE PRESCRIPTION EYEWEAR ROLL UP KEY BOARD Getting anyone at all interested in a new keyboard is quite the feat, but LG has just about managed it with its new, quirky roll-up peripheral. The Rolly, as it’s inventively named, is intended for those who want to be a bit more productive with their tablet. The benefit of having a keyboard that rolls up around its battery, of course, is that it takes up the least amount of space in your bag. And neat, the Rolly certainly is. The magnets that run down either side of the key grid are no weaklings, keeping the thing tightly wound and generating a satisfying snap as you roll it up. Rolly will be released end of 2015 and your looking at around $119 USD if you want one.

Do not adjust your TV set, or the font size on your iPad — adjust your eye glasses instead. The British company Adlens is set to launch a new concept in eyeglasses in 2016. The glasses will allow wearers to see at variable distances by turning discreetly placed knobs located inside the top corners of the frames. The knobs squeeze flexible lenses, which sandwich a layer of clear silicone oil, thus changing their magnification rates, allowing the glasses to function like bifocals or progressive lenses while preserving the full-frame viewing area. Totally awesome!

REASONS WHY HIV INFECTIONS IN AUSTRALIA AREN’T FALLING By Bridget Haire Lecturer in Ethics, HIV Prevention, UNSW Australia

DESPITE HIGH PROFILE HEALTH PROMOTION CAMPAIGNS AND A CONCERTED EFFORT TO MAKE ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR PEOPLE WITH HIV, THE NUMBER OF NEW HIV CASES IN AUSTRALIA HAS REMAINED RELATIVELY STABLE OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS.

REASONS WHY HIV INFECTIONS IN AUSTRALIA AREN’T FALLING

1

ACCORDING TO THE LATEST ANNUAL SURVEILLANCE REPORT, HIV, HEPATITIS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS IN AUSTRALIA, 1,081 NEW CASES OF HIV INFECTION WERE RECORDED IN 2014, COMPARED TO 1,028 IN 2013 AND 1,064 IN 2012. Sexual contact between men remains the main route of HIV transmission, accounting for 70% of cases in 2014. Heterosexual sex was responsible for 19% of cases, while around 8% of cases were attributed to injecting drug use. Although Australia has made some gains — more HIV positive gay men are receiving treatment than ten years ago and the number disclosing their infectious status to partners has risen — for a number of reasons we’re not seeing a major decline in infections.

19%

Heterosexual sex was responsible for 19% of HIV all infections.

1,081

In 2014, 1,081 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in Australia.

2 3% In 2014, 8% of transmissions were attributed to injecting drug use, and for 3% of transmissions, the mode of transmission was undetermined.

70%

Sexual contact between men who are attracted to men remains the main route of HIV transmission at 70%.

HIV IS VERY DIFFERENT NOW HIV infection is now a treatable condition rather than a death sentence, and this is a very, very good thing. It means people who contract HIV today can expect to live near-normal lifespans, as long as they adhere to standard treatment, a regimen of antiretroviral drugs. The flip side of this good news is that, inevitably, HIV is now less scary. That hasn’t resulted in condom abandonment by the community at highest risk of infection in Australia — gay men and other men who have sex with men — but it does impact how they assess their risk of infection. Research shows HIV is drastically less infectious if an infected person is taking suppressive antiretroviral therapy. Over 90% of diagnosed people in Australia are on such therapy. The risk of getting HIV from having unprotected sex with a gay man who is HIV positive and on suppressive therapy is much lower than from unprotected sex with a sexually active gay man who hasn’t been tested recently. Assessing your risk of getting HIV is now far more complicated.

IT’S NOT EASY TO ALWAYS USE CONDOMS Condoms are a simple, relatively cheap, protective barrier that prevents HIV infection. But effective use of condoms requires ongoing, correct use every time there’s a risk of HIV transmission during sex. This is difficult to sustain over a lifetime; the norm in heterosexual relationships, for instance, is to replace condoms by some form of hormonal contraception as relationships become longer term. HEALTH&WELLBEING

19

5 3

14.9 At the end of 2014, 14.9 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy worldwide.

4

36.9 In 2014, 36.9 million people were living with HIV in the world.

20

REASONS WHY HIV INFECTIONS IN AUSTRALIA AREN’T FALLING

PRE-EXPOSURE PREVENTION ISN’T READILY AVAILABLE There’s a new form of HIV prevention called “pre-exposure prophylaxis” or PrEP for short. A little like oral contraceptives, PrEP involves HIVnegative people at risk of infection taking a particular antiretroviral drug on an ongoing basis to prevent getting HIV. PrEP has been licensed in the United States since 2012, but not in Australia. Some people get it through so-called “implementation studies” (small studies that give access to a select, very-high risk group of people while collecting data), but there are only 450 places in these studies, even though there are many thousands of people in Australia at very high risk of HIV infection. Australian gay men who understand they are at increased risk of HIV infection have had to resort to either paying around A$13,500 a year or ordering generic versions of the antiretroviral drugs over the internet. This is legal, as long as the person making the order has a doctor’s prescription and is importing the drugs for personal use.

5

GAY MEN USE CONDOMS MUCH MORE THAN HETEROSEXUALS Most gay men use condoms for high-risk sex most of the time. When they don’t, they often use some other strategy to mitigate risk. In comparison, among heterosexual Australians aged between 16 and 69 who were sexually active, less than half reported using condoms in the last year. What this means for an effective HIV response in Australia is that we need to listen to the voices of peer-based community organisations to understand what makes adherence to HIV prevention strategies difficult for those at highest risk of infection. Simplified access to testing is critical, so that early infections are picked up early and newly infected people can commence treatment both for their own health and to reduce ongoing transmission. Wider access to PrEP is also critical, so that those who are aware that their condom use is less than perfect have another option to rely upon. At the beginning of the HIV epidemic, gay men invented safer sex to protect themselves and their loved ones. Today, we need to listen to them to understand what makes risk reduction difficult, and which technologies are critical to the future of HIV prevention in this country.

GETTING TESTED ISN’T ALWAYS EASY Sexually active Australian gay men are expected to test for HIV at least once a year, even if they always use condoms. For men who have had any riskier practices, such as unprotected sex, this rises to testing every three months. This is a big ask. In order to make testing less logistically fraught, HIV community organisations have developed community based rapid testing options. Rapid tests — particularly those in community settings — simplify the testing process, deliver a fast screening result and are open after business hours, so as not to disrupt work. But rapid community-based testing is not yet available in every state and territory. Home-based testing — where people test themselves, making the process still more convenient — is available only through a clinical trial.

HEALTH&WELLBEING

NOVEMBER IS TESTING MONTH As Dr Haire mentions above, one of the challenges we face with finally getting on top of HIV, is testing. While asking guys to get tested one to four times per year seems simple enough, we know the reality of those expectations can be a lot more challenging! In order to make testing more accessible, for the first time Canberra will have community based rapid HIV testing available on the spot throughout the ACT at numerous outreach sites. Tests will also include screening for other STIs and Hepatitis. ACT Testing Month will run throughout November and anyone who accesses a Testing Month site will be able to get a quick, free and confidential sexual health check-up. Check out testingmonth.info to see where and when you can get tested.

CASEY CONWAY BUNS OF STEEL THIS ISSUE I HAD ONE OF THE HARDEST EDITORIAL ASSIGNMENTS I HAVE EVER RECEIVED FROM ALEX OUR EDITOR. IT INVOLVED MANY HOURS OF ONLINE RESEARCH OF A RIDICULOUSLY GOOD LOOKING EX-RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER IN HIS SWIMMERS... IT WAS ALL FOR EDITORIAL REASONS! HONEST! I then had the chance to catch up with Casey Conway for a chat to get an insight on this inspiring guy from our community, who faces the new campaign for swimwear label Sluggers. Sluggers founder Adam Butler says they scouted Casey on Instagram (do yourself a favour and check out his Instagram!) and knew he would be perfect for their summer campaign. “Just look at him — Casey is the embodiment of our brand,” says Adam. “He’s a confident, fun, healthy bloke who’s great to be around. Plus after the shoot he left his Sluggers on and went for beers with his mates. That’s our kind of guy!”

RACERBACK - HOKKALOOGY Burnt orange with a contrasting hibiscus print. Cut higher on your cheeks. Cut lower at the waist.

The Indigenous model and youth development advocate previously played for the Sydney Roosters but was forced to retire prematurely due to injury in 2005. Casey was later discovered by a modelling talent scout whilst walking down the street in Sydney’s Paddington, and has gone on to a successful modelling career.

Interview by Scott Malcolm

THE INTERVIEW YOUR BIO SAYS YOU ARE A ‘YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ADVOCATE’ CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT AS WELL AS YOUR JOURNEY SINCE LEAVING THE NRL? For the last two years I have been working with Ohana For Youth, which is a Gold Coast based Not For Profit — you can check out more of their work on Facebook. We work with young people aged 13-18 that are disengaged from the education system. Most of our referrals are from the mental health and youth justice systems and we work with them to look at what their options are in relation to their education or employment pathways. We work on whatever they identify as their barriers to get them re-engaged. One of the main reasons I have picked up Modelling was because I wanted to use it as a platform to be a positive role model for indigenous kids, and also all other kids, who are finding themselves. I went to a Queensland country boarding school before moving to Sydney for rugby and the Roosters, and that was a part of finding out different things about myself and coming out was a part of that process.

SO HOW IS IT BEING INDIGENOUS IN THE GAY COMMUNITY? As with everywhere I have found there is an element of racism in the gay community and some stereotypes that carry over into that. It’s not just Indigenous, it’s also the ‘I’m not into asian’s etc’ and as I have gotten older and been more comfortable in myself it hasn’t been an issue for a long time but it has been there. Some people also see it as a novelty without realising it is a little bit offensive and a kind of casual racism such as once being told “You’re really hot for an Aboriginal!” And it can happen in any community but I think it is a bigger issue than we see in the media and what we talk about in the gay community. SO ON A LIGHTER TOPIC, AS WE HEAD INTO SUMMER, AS BRAND-AMBASSADOR AND MODEL FOR SLUGGERS WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SWIMMERS?

SUNGA - SKULLS Candy skulls on charcoal. Brazillian beach style with an Aussie twist.

CASEY CONWAY BUNS OF STEEL

I really like a classic design — with the Sluggers they are a typical Australian image and they are definitely really comfortable which is what I go for! SO AS A FINANCE GEEK I ASK EVERYONE I INTERVIEW — WHAT’S THE BEST MONEY TIP YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN IN LIFE? That’s a hard one! As a country boy at heart I know the value of a dollar so would say its important to have savings for emergencies but also you need to be willing to be spontaneous and have fun with it, I love my travel! You don’t want to die with too much money in the bank. OUR EDITOR WOULD LIKE TO KNOW DO YOU LIKE TO SNUGGLE IN YOUR SLUGGERS? After much laughter! Although the Sluggers are super comfy — I prefer to snuggle without them! WHAT’S THE ONE QUESTION I SHOULD HAVE ASKED YOU THAT I HAVEN’T? Well I was expecting something along the lines of are you single? AND THE ANSWER TO THAT IS? I have recently become single!

After our interview I promised Casey I would put a call out there for all the single Canberra lads :-) He was great fun to interview and has a great vibe. He also told us that he has friends in Canberra and has recently enjoyed a trip to the Capital! So you never know your luck, you might see him carving up the dance floor at Cube sometime soon! If you like Casey’s Sluggers as much as he does you can grab a pair at sluggers.com.au — You can also follow Casey on Instagram at casey_conway.

GAYWAVES THE COLLECTION OF AUSTRALIA’S FILM AND BROADCAST HISTORY HELD AT CANBERRA’S NATIONAL FILM AND SOUND ARCHIVE VAULTS IN MITCHELL INCLUDES SOME OF GLBTI AUSTRALIA’S FIRST STEPS TOWARDS A PRESENCE ON THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE. Sydney’s community radio station 2SER broke new ground in 1979 when it hosted a weekly program dedicated to gay and lesbian issues. This was at a time when male homosexual behaviour was still criminalised in seven out of eight states and territories. Called Gaywaves, the show allowed those voices that were often absent from the mainstream media to be heard regularly for the first time. It illustrated various aspects of the gay liberation movement in the Australian context through interviews with community representatives, coverage of events such as HIV/AIDS rallies and Mardi Gras festivals, music, talkback, news, current affairs reports and even two radio dramas. Gaywaves also played a global role by sharing stories and content with the internationally distributed US radio program This Way Out. Gaywaves was run by a passionate and diverse volunteer collective, including Julie McCrossin, whose first broadcasting job was with Gaywaves. Dietmar Hollman joined Gaywaves in February 1985 and worked on the program for more than 15 years as a presenter and program producer. Hollman donated his collection of Gaywaves recordings, posters, photographs and other documentation to the NFSA in 2009, and before he passed away in August 2012 he chose to support the NFSA with a bequest which the NFSA has channelled into preserving and sharing Gaywaves and other LGBTI-related radio recordings from the national collection.

Gaywaves ended in 2005 after 25 years on the air. Presenter Tim Govers told The Sydney Morning Herald that ‘people... used to listen to the show when they were young and it helped them come to terms with being gay. A number of people have told me they came out on air by calling the program so it’s been a significant part of people’s lives.’ As part of the SpringOUT line-up this year, the National Film and Sound Archive is hosting an event on Wednesday 25th November at 5.30pm, ‘Remembering Gaywaves’, with a few of the original presenters on stage recalling their pioneering work at 2SER, and the NFSA curatorial team talking about preserving our early queer media history. The event will also look at the GLBTI programming that Canberra’s community radio station 2XX ran following the success of the 2SER show. From the very early 1980s, ‘Gay Wavelength’ aired on 2XX every Wednesday evening at 10pm, and for a time repeated at 6pm of a Friday afternoon. Mike’ and ‘Tom’ were interviewed by Peter Heweston on Gay Wavelength in November 1985 about being in a gay relationship, and in the discussion Mike talks about how having access to a radio show talking about gay issues was the very beginning of his coming out process. “I’d have a few drinks at work on a Friday afternoon then quietly slip off, get into my car and park in Civic or whatever, and listen to it,” he tells the interviewer. The show advertised screenings of queer films at the ANU, and this was where Mike met his first set of gay and lesbian friends. 2XX ran the Gay Wavelength program under various names and at different times until its last show in 2013. Now the locally produced show Friday Night Lip Service which began in 2012 and aims to create a safer space for queer women to express their identities and connect with others. It enjoys a strong listenership not just in Canberra but across the globe thanks to their regular podcasts. THE GOOD LIFE OR THE GOODS LIFE Reflecting on meaning and purpose at Christmas Christmas is supposed to be a time filled with joy and love, but unfortunately sometimes can be a stressful time for many people. Whilst it is notionally about ‘recreation’ and connecting with family, it can often become a time of loneness, distress, arguments, financial pressure and stress. How many times have you heard people say they need a holiday to recover from Christmas. It seems totally ridiculous — right? As a nation, we have greater levels of wealth, health and material possessions than ever in our history. Yet currently we are recording our highest levels of depression and anxiety. Increased feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, and lower levels of contentment and sense of wellbeing. It’s a very worrying trend. Psychologists refer to this phenomenon as the “Happiness Trap”. Recent research suggests that many of us get caught in a vicious cycle in which the more we strive for happiness, the more it eludes us. In this article Julia O’Boyle, from Life Unlimited Health Solutions looks closer at the Christmas period and what we can you do this Christmas to feel happier, more content and less stressed. FUSEFEATURE

31

CHRISTMAS THE ‘GOOD’ LIFE OR THE ‘GOODS’ LIFE Christmas is nearly upon us. Wahhhh! I hear some of you say. “I hate Christmas”, “I love Christmas”. “If it weren’t for my family, I’d really love Christmas”. “Huh! All that hoohah for one day”. “Yay, time off work!” “I’m so stressed”. If you adore Christmas, and love every minute of the shopping, cooking, eating, drinking, socialising, wrapping, the crowded malls and sugary carols, then you might like to skip this article — or read it, and support a friend who doesn’t share your enthusiasm. What does Christmas mean to you? For some, it is beyond wearisome as we struggle with the Ghosts of Christmases past; haunted by family fights and bickering, the weird uncle, the sozzled cousin, pressure of buying the perfect gifts, the unrelenting redness of your mother’s face as she slaved away over the roast turkey and veggies in 35 degree heat, with only a warm glass of chardy to help her. The anti-climax when everything is cleared away and the wrapping gets shoved into the recycling bin. The exhaustion of it all. And as adults, some of us spending Christmas without our beloved because they’re not out to their folks, or it’s too hard to negotiate who’s going to whose family this year. Christmas is about pressure and expectation for many of us. There are lists of presents to buy in hurried lunchtimes and after work. There is indecision: is this silk (“God, it’s expensive”) scarf all right for Janet? What did she get me last year? How am I going to choose nongendered toys for my kids, cos that’s what you’re supposed to do now? Billy wants an iPad, his sister wants a phone. Are they too young for these things; all their friends seem to have them. Can I just give everyone a JB voucher and be done with it? I’d better buy some “just in case” presents, just “in case” someone drops in. Hell, the food!! Where will I get a gluten, dairy, fructose, nut-free cake? Is chestnut and sage stuffing available ready-made? Nan’s allergic to prawns, there goes the seafood entrée. Why did I invite all those people over? I don’t even like them… We are bombarded with expectation that families and friends will all come together (some we haven’t even seen since last Christmas) and have a big old jolly time. 32

We’ll all love each other, not a cross word shall be said, not a frown wrinkle anyone’s brow. And in the evening we’ll watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and tell ourselves what a great day we had, and then plan our commando-like raids on the Boxing Day sales. Sound familiar? Are these scenarios really what you want life to be? Does this truly represent who you are and what you want? Rather than being a time for recovery, rejuvenation and recreation of ourselves, Christmas has a focus on excess and material goods. The evidence tells us that this idea not only doesn’t make us any happier, but when we receive the credit card bill, it actively throws us into a world of financial pain and stress. In decades past, getting a Christmas present meant something; we didn’t get stuff all year long. Now, when most of us in the instant-gratification Western world can buy “stuff” any time we like, we need to know that what really makes us happier is taking time out and dedicating time to ourselves and what is meaningful to us. Do we want the “Good life” or the “Goods life” this Christmas? If you want the good life — that is, a life that is calm, reflects your values, and doesn’t leave you frazzled and resentful then you’ll actually have to think about what this looks like and plan it. It’ll mean making decisions about what you’ll do, and who you’ll have around you. Think about what Christmas means to you — for some, it will have a religious or spiritual meaning, for others it’s an opportunity to have some days away from work and responsibilities; a time to reconnect with family and friends; a holiday, some downtime, a few days of uninterrupted time with your best beloved. Maybe you’d like a break from “Christmas cheer” and want to live alcohol, drug and heavy food-free for a few days? What is important to you at this time of year.

If you take a values-based approach this Christmas, and do what truly reflects your deeply held beliefs, then Christmas can be what you really want it to be. Let’s take a look at a few areas of life people usually identify as having high meaning to them, and some ideas to honour yourself and your values:

RELATIONSHIP If your relationship is meaningful and precious to you, then it’s important! If the thought of not spending Christmas with your significant other is unbearable and you don’t want this to happen again, then work out how you can have this time together. It’s time to make some new Christmas memories. And if you do decide to eschew your own Ghosts of Christmases past — make a plan so you’re not both sitting around feeling guilty and miserable because you’ve “upset” the family. What will you do? Stay in bed all day, watch all the Netflix series you meant to during the year, cook a special meal together, give each other a gift, zip off to the coast for a few days… the possibilities are endless if you give it some thought.

FAMILY Does your family include your chosen family? Do these people enrich and support your lives? Do they love you unconditionally and vice-versa? Then if you want to be with your family, these are the people to hang with. If your family includes people who don’t respect you, make snide remarks about “poofters” and “trannies” (“Can’t you take a joke Margaret?”) and are generally mean spirited then don’t risk a damaged soul and be around them. You don’t have to endure Christmas.

HEALTH Feel bloated and hungover at Christmas time? Would you rather not? Like to face the New Year a bit more clear eyed than in the past? Make a plan — what would you like to eat? Grilled fish on the barbie and sparkling water? Go for it. Take your own food to the party, invite people to yours; you decide the menu. Ask people to “bring a plate”, tell loved ones you want to eat and drink less this year. Go for a walk after the meal, take a drive with the kids to see the lights, go to the park, play a game of cricket — grownups need to play too.

SPRITUALITY For many, Christmas is about as non-religious and nonspiritual as, well, Christmas in Australia. If church is your thing and you want to attend a service, do it. For some, a day off or two is a chance to get out in nature, to practice yoga, to do some meditation. Whatever your brand of spirituality, if it’s important to you and nurtures your body and mind incorporate it into your life this Christmas. It’s up to you; you’re in charge of your life. Take some time to reflect on what gives you meaning and purpose and plan a Christmas time that truly will be what you want it to be. FUSEFEATURE

ARE YOU A WOMAN WHO DOES NOT FIT NEATLY INTO THE TRADITIONAL FEMME GENDER BINARY. For many women it can be frustrating trying to find something you feel comfortable in at the beach. Feeling your pain a few women got together and decided to start there own brand of swim and sports wear. Clothing that is made for people that are tired of never being able to find something that is created with their body shape and needs in mind. We chatted with Marialexandra the creator of OUTPLAY to find out exactly what she had to offer women this summer. When it comes to swimwear, there seems to be virtually nothing for women who do not fit neatly into the traditional femme gender binary. Why do you think that is?

I think the market hasn’t paid attention to what they feel are minorities and that too many companies assume a woman just wants to wear your standard bikini or one piece. Which when you think about it is pretty silly. Do you think OUTPLAY is the only summer fashion line catering for the lesbian, trans or non-gender binary market?

There are companies making swimwear that is aimed at the tomboy market but I don’t believe there is another company out there, at this moment, dedicated to the lesbian and non-gender binary people, and I don’t know of another company developing swimwear with compression levels like ours. What makes your swimwear and sportswear clothing different to other brands?

Our brand aims at making people feel more comfortable and happy with themselves, whether it’s at the beach or by the pool. We’ve had some fantastic customer feedback and it’s wonderful knowing we can make someone’s day a bit brighter because of what we do. It’s not just a swim top or shorts, it’s a piece of clothing that gives someone the confidence and freedom to enjoy life while feeling and looking good on the outside as well as the inside.

MIAMI SUMMER LOVIN’ Can you tell us more about compression wear and why you feel it’s so important.

The benefits of compression tops are many. For those who have some levels of dysphoria our compression tops help ease the discomfort. For those who need an extra umf in feeling more themselves with that extra bit of compression, flattening the chest or holding it in, or the person who wants to tuck or hold in parts that may make them uncomfortable, the compression tops work amazingly well. They don’t hurt the body, inside or out, and move well with the body allowing for most activity without discomfort or limiting movement. You mentioned ‘androgynous cuts’ when describing the OUTPLAY style and design, does that mean that your market may also include guys or trans people that don’t fit into the gender norm.

Our measurements and cuts are probably not so suited to guys but they do work for most trans people. It’s a matter of trying out the sizes for each individual and finding what fits best. We try to make every product as versatile as possible in order to keep it as androgynous as possible. Of course, there are too many body types and there will always be pieces that won’t fit right for some bodies. But we’ll keep adding and hopefully there will be a piece that fits just right. What items are most popular at the moment?

Our Swimmee and Flatseas are our biggest sellers at the moment but almost everyone purchases a top and a bottom so our Tomboiers and Bois are also doing well. Do you ship to overseas and to Australia.

Of course! We have great customers in Australia. We’ve shipped to many countries overseas in the short time we’ve been open: England, Poland, France, Canada, amongst others, and Australia has been a great market for us from the beginning. The girls at OUTPLAY have lot’s of great summer fashion items for you to choose from in a wide variety of sizes and fabrics including lycra, spandex mixes and cotton. outplaywear.com

DECLUTTERING

YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE With spring well underway it is always a good time to declutter your life and your cupboard. So what about your financial life, what are the things you could be doing to give your finances a bit of a spruce up for the new season and get you on the path to feeling empowered around your money.

CLEAR OUT YOUR CASH FLOW

SPRUCE UP YOUR SUPERANNUATION

I admit to being a person who lived pay to pay when I first started working, I would get to the day after payday and often wonder – where did it all go! I did not like feeling that my money was in control of me rather than the other way around.

I have recently seen people on social media with rage over the new www. my.gov.au website as it has been a little clunky with the latest lot of tax returns and e-tax. However my.gov.au and the new super stream system have improved the finding of lost super members. There is still $12 Billion in lost superannuation in Australia. Some of it could be yours so jump online and see what you can find! Only keep the super paperwork for the last 12 months and shred the rest!

It can be difficult, but make the commitment and the time to go through your bank statements and your spending habits. Invest in yourself and your financial wellbeing by calculating your lifestyle number (the number of dollars you need each week or fortnight to live your life). Once you know this, set up a working cash account and each pay have this amount paid into it to cover your lifestyle costs. Once it is gone no more spending for that pay cycle. I also suggest people have a separate ‘bills’ account for structure and transparency on what you spend. Review your existing expenses and find things that you can switch if you’re paying too much for them (insurances, gas electricity, mobile phone). Things you can ditch if your not using them anymore (companies love getting you stuck on regular monthly payments as it boost their cash flow) and things that you just don’t need anymore – recycle or sell online! Remember every dollar you spend today is a dollar you cannot spend in the future!

DUMP YOUR DEBT If you have personal debt, such as personal loans or credit cards for lifestyle expenses consider consolidation or hunt around for the best ‘interest free’ period. Check out www.creditcardfinder.com. au and consolidate then pay down these debts and get off the debt train!

Consolidate your funds into the one fund – compare the pair – and make sure you check the fees, investment performance and any insurance options you have built in. Check out the moneysmart.gov.au website which has some great resources to compare your existing super funds.

WHAT DOCUMENTS TO KEEP People often ask me what paperwork they should hang onto. If you are like me you will agree we are definitely not yet living in a paperless society. You still need to keep some records for the tax office (last 5 years) but try scanning things into electronic format so you don’t have filing cabinets full of documents. Most banks will have online statements these days, which you can access and save to your records if you want. If you have investments keep a file for the current year and shred the rest of the documentation that you don’t need. Or as I say go electronic and get everything online as a soft copy where you can!

OUT SOURCE As with all tasks in life, if you don’t have the time or skill set (or if you want to improve your understanding) team up with a professional who understands what you are trying to achieve and outsource the tasks you can to other people. If you need assistance in exploring these further talk to a professional but most importantly start your journey to being free around your money and creating wealth with understanding.

QUOTE “Every bad situation is a blues song waiting to happen.” Amy Winehouse — 14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011.

AMY

RICKI AND THE FLASH

The infamous 27 Club has some great names on its unfortunate membership — Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix — and in 2011, Amy Winehouse sadly joined them. The talented but troubled singer was battling many a demon before fame struck following the release of her second album Back To Black. As he did with the impressive 2010 doco Senna, director Asif Kapadia weaves together a fascinating tale from a selection of archival and personal footage, letting the images and Amy herself — tell this tragic tale of a talent who burned brightly but who burnt out far too soon.

Meryl Streep can do anything so it should come as no surprise that the three-time Oscar winner more than convinces as a rock ‘n’ roll chick. Ricki (Streep) is a woman who abandoned her family to pursue her music career, but she now feels compelled to return to her family with news of the failure of her daughter’s (Meryl’s actual daughter, Mamie Gummer) marriage. Understandably, the reception Ricki receives from her grown children and ex-husband (Kevin Kline) is not that of an adoring audience. And yes, that’s 1980s heartthrob, Rick Springfield, as Streep’s band mate and boyfriend.

SUITE FRANCAISE

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E

Adapted from a long-lost and unfinished novel by Irene Nemirovsky, Suite Francaise is a World War II-set romance that could just as easily have been made 60 years ago. Following the occupation of a French village by the Nazis, a Frenchwoman (Michelle Williams) and a Nazi soldier (Matthias Schoenaerts) slowly, and clandestinely, fall in love in this romantic, somewhat suspenseful period drama. Michelle Williams continues to be one of the more interesting actors working today, while Schoenaerts, also fine, continues his hot streak of romancing some of the world’s best actresses, including Cotillard, Mulligan, Winslet.

They don’t award Oscars for ‘Best Looking Cast’ but if they did, the stars of The Man From U.N.C.L.E would get the nomination. Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) are impressive human specimens whose beauty is only enhanced by Joanna Johnston’s 1960’s wardrobe. And they’re all having a tonne of fun running around Europe during the Cold War: Cavill and Hammer playing U.S. and Russian agents forced to work together to retrieve a nuclear warhead stolen by an Italian extremist (Debicki). It’s not Bond, but it’s good fun.

Virgo

August 24 – September 23 Single or partnered, love is going to be hanging around this summer! Enjoy the company of your loved ones and get creative when it comes to going out. Tip: Don’t worry about work and money; the Universe will make sure you have what you need.

Sagittarius

November 23 – December 22 By December, Uranus is going to fill you with confidence; energy and motivation — stay grounded and use the summer to move towards your goals. Tip: Stop thinking about the past and the future — enjoy your wonderful present.

Aries

March 21 – April 20 December is going to fill you with motivation and energy, particularly when it comes to any goals you have in mind at the moment. Keep up the hard work and you might see results sooner than expected. Tip: Get out more often and enjoy the fabulous weather.

Cancer

June 22 – July 22 During November you may need to be decisive when it comes to your work life — stay focused, clear and let Neptune guide you. Extra motivation and energy will be a plus for you over the summer months. Tip: Take care of what you eat — love that body.

EMAIL DEAR ROSE WITH YOUR PROBLEM

By Rose Pappalardo

Dear Rose, I am a Muslim guy and have recently come out and my family, who are very displeased. It hurts and I can’t seem to stop going over and over it in my head. How do I move forward? ROMG

Dear ROMG, It is absolutely normal to feel a sense of pain especially as you have grown up in a culture that treasures family and tradition. If it makes you feel any better your story is not unique, many poeple from all fiaths have experienced rejection when coming out. Be patient, time is a great healer of wounds and with time often comes acceptance. Seeking some form of counselling is also a really good idea at this time, counselling will give you an impartial person to assist you in coping with this massive change in your life and guide you when you are feeling unsure or anxious. Looking after yourself is what is going get you through this chapter of your life.

Dear Rose, I recently started dating someone new, it’s nice to finally have someone who is mine! The problem is I think he’s a flirt and I can’t always control his wondering eyes and it makes me mad. How can I make him see that he only need me now? Roy

Dear Roy, It is wonderful that you have met someone who makes you happy and it’s ok to feel insecure. Being a flirt myself, I feel that I may be uniquely qualified to let you in on a little secret. People flirt for lots of reasons, some people flirt to be funny, some flirt to entertain, some flirt for attention and some people are just really good at it. The thing to remember is that until your BF crosses that line from harmless flirting to something more, your worring for no real reason. More troubling is you could be the one to drive a wedge into this new and wonderful relationship by overreacting to his flirting. Every relationship needs trust. If you have no trust in the person you love or they don’t trust you implicitly then little things like harmless flirting can become the wedge that may destroy you. The most important thing to remember is at the end of the day it’s you that he goes home with and to.

Dear Rose, My girlfriend and I are deeply in love and I want to marry her. Do you think it’s worthwhile travelling overseas to get married or are we just wasting our money? Lex & Annie

Dear Lex & Annie, Celebrating your love is probably the biggest memory you will create together, it’s something that will bind you throughout your relationship. It doesn’t matter if you marry in Australia or marry in an exotic location overseas, what matters is how you feel about it. While here in Australia we are still battling for SSM recognition, the good news is that some state governments now offer some recognition. NSW has a Same Sex Relationship registry, where you and register your relationship and/ or your overseas marriage. In the ACT there are Same Sex Unions and the Tasmanian Relationships Act 2003 gives us the ability to register your relationship as a Significant Relationship. A recent development has been the announcement from the Queensland government that they will reintroduce same sex unions. So whatever option you both choose, here or overseas, have the most wonderful memorable day.
