❂ REMEMBERING THOSE LOST HIV/AIDS HAS HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD. It wasn’t that long ago when the first case of HIV/AIDS in Australia was recorded in Sydney, October 1982, and the first Australian death from AIDS occurred in Melbourne, July 1983. Many lives have been lost since then, and people are still contracting HIV today. Last month, my partner and I joined our local community to honour and remember those whom we have lost to AIDS in the Australian Capital Territory and throughout the world.

This year in Canberra, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held for the first time in the beautiful Margaret Whitlam Pavilion at the National Arboretum.

The ceremony was a time to mark the many steps we have made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but it was also an opportunity to remember the suffering and loss experienced by many, and to call on the community for greater acceptance and support for those still in need. The Memorial was hosted by Genevieve Jacobs and included some rousing speeches from Professor John Dwyer, Senator Katy Gallagher and former AIDS Action Council President Scott Malcolm. We listened to cellist Christian J. Renggli as the names of the lost were remembered. And the Canberra Gay & Lesbian Qwire sang as candles were lit and tears were shed. The AIDS Candlelight Memorial is indeed a sombre event, but it is also a day of hope, courage and possibility. We were honoured to be part of such an important occasion. Here in Canberra there is currently no permanent place for people to gather and remember those lost to AIDS. In response to this, a community group made up of people living with HIV, their families and their friends, together with the support of the AIDS Action Council, have spent many years searching for a suitable site where this space could be created. During the Memorial we were thrilled to hear that this has finally come to fruition. The AIDS Garden of Reflection will be built at the National Arboretum in the ‘Gallery of Gardens’ located on the Arboretum’s events terrace. The five hundred square metre garden will feature a range of native plants and sculptures by renowned landscape architects, with the objective of providing a peaceful space for remembrance, reflection and inspiration. Of course, large projects like this one cost money and as a community we have an ambitious goal — to raise $125,000 which is needed to make this important and long-held dream a reality. ALICE: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS OPENS 26 MAY When Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland grossed one billion at the international box office in 2010, a sequel was more inevitable than yet another Spider Man re-imaging. Thankfully for Disney, author Lewis Carroll had written several Alice books so there was plenty of material to work with. And while Burton may have handed the reins over to James Bobin (The Muppets) this time around, Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Anne Hathaway (White Queen) and Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen) are all back for some more trippy adventures in Wonderland.

MR. RIGHT OPENS 16 JUNE A good man is hard to find but a hitman not-so-much in this blackly funny rom-com starring Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) and Sam Rockwell (Moon). Martha (Kendrick) thinks she’s found the perfect guy when she meets Francis (Rockwell) but it turns out the new love of her life is a hitman who has suddenly developed a conscience, well, sort of, and as a result is on the run from the cartels who employ him. Kendrick and Rockwell both have charm to burn, and for those who fall into that subgroup of people who enjoy Sam Rockwell dancing, prepare to have your fancy tickled.

A film where Alexander Skarsgard spends most of the time in a loin cloth and little else? What’s not to like? The True Blood anti-hero plays the good guy here, the boy raised by apes in the jungle before encountering his own species as an adult. The Legend of Tarzan actually picks up after Tarzan has been living in London, but he is called to return to his jungle home to investigate the activities of a mining operation. Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) plays Jane opposite Skarsgard and his washboard abs; and the film is directed by David Yates, who helmed the final four Harry Potter films.

GHOSTBUSTERS OPENS 14 JULY First of all, anyone referring to this as the “all-female Ghostbusters” gets a metaphorical punch to the groin. Ordinarily, remakes and reboots aren’t that promising on paper, but when director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids; The Heat; Spy) decided to tackle the 1980s classic with his Bridesmaids’ stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy in tow, interest was well and truly piqued. Add in Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon (and Chris Hemsworth as the gals’ secretary — take that, MRA cry babies!), not to mention cameos by the original cast members, and you’ve got what promises to be a whole lotta fun. Who ya gonna call?

COUNTRIES NOW TARGETING GAY & BISEXUAL WOMEN A recent report has given an in-depth analysis of how updated laws against homosexuality specifically target lesbians. It’s now illegal to be lesbian in one in four counties. The report produced by the Human Dignity Trust, found that over ten countries, including in places like Sri Lanka, have rewritten laws that once only targeted gay men now also discriminate against lesbians and bisexual women.

COLOMBIA LEGALISES GAY MARRIAGE Colombia has legalised same-sex marriage, making the country the fourth in Latin America to do so. Gay couples were already allowed to form civil partnerships, but the recent ruling now extends full and equal marriage rights. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have previously legalised same-sex marriage. Argentina was the first Latin American country to take the step in July 2010. In Mexico, gay marriage is legal in the capital and in certain states.

SAUDI MAN ARRESTED FOR FLYING ‘PRETTY’ RAINBOW FLAG THAT HIS KIDS LIKED A Saudi doctor was recently arrested for flying a rainbow flag above his home. The man told Saudi religious police that he bought the flag online after one of his children found the colours “pretty” and had no idea it was a gay pride flag. According to media sources, the man was bailed after a lengthy investigation. He agreed to remove and destroy the flag. Being gay or lesbian is illegal under Sharia law in Saudi Arabia and punishments for those engaging in same sex relationships include chemical castration, imprisonment and even death. Saudi Arabia has zero tolerance for queer individuals and has executed 76 people this year to date. In September last year, Saudia Arabia called for the United Nations to remove gay rights from the organisation’s Global Goals, claiming it was “counter to Islamic law.” In a report to the UN Human Rights Council, Juan Mendez, the Special Rapporteur on Torture, said it was becoming clear the escalating number of executions in the Saudi Arabia amounted to torture and breached international law.

NORWAY ALLOWS GAY CHURCH WEDDINGS The head of the Church of Norway, Den Norske Kirke, has given the OK to new marriage ceremony rules that will allow same-sex couples to be married within the church. In order to pass the historic agreement bishops and other church officials were granted the right to refuse to officiate same-sex marriages if they personally felt unconformable. However, gay couples where ensured the right of being married in their local church even if the officials decline to carry out the service. Norway is one of the most liberal countries in Europe when it comes to homosexuality. Same-sex civil marriage and adoptions have been legal since 2009, and the Church of Norway also allows the ordination of gay men and women. NEWS&POLITICS

ANOTHER STUDY FINDS KIDS OF GAY DADS ARE DOING FINE Opponents of equality claim that same-sex couples should be banned from having children because they deserve both a mother and a father, but new research from the American Academy of Pediatrics has found that children of gay dads are just as well adjusted and as happy as their peers born to straight parents.

A large scale HIV vaccine trial will be conducted in South Africa to determine whether it is effective at preventing infection. This new study is designed to determine whether the regimen is safe, tolerable and effective at preventing HIV infection among adults. “For the first time in seven years, the scientific community is embarking on a large-scale clinical trial of an HIV vaccine, the product of years of study and experimentation,” said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. co-funder of the trial. “A safe and effective HIV vaccine could help bring about a durable end to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and is particularly needed in southern Africa, where HIV is more pervasive than anywhere else in the world.” Starting in November this year all the study participants will receive a total of five injections over one year. The volunteers will be randomly assigned to receive either the investigational vaccine regimen or a placebo.

The finding also revealed how gay men where creating families. The largest percentage being through adoption or foster care. 36% reported their children were born while one parent was in a straight relationship and another 14% became parents through surrogacy. University of Oregon sociology professor Ryan Light said, “The consensus is overwhelming in terms of there being no difference in children who are raised by same-sex or different-sex parents.”

LABOR PLEDGES GAY AND LESBIAN RIGHTS WATCHDOG The Labor party has announced that it will appoint a full time LGBTI Discrimination Commissioner if it wins back government. In a media statement they said “Great progress has been made in the fight for a fairer Australia but there is still more to be done... Sadly, LGBTI Australians continue to face discrimination in many areas of life and many feel they need to hide their sexuality for fear of violence and discrimination.” The LGBTI commissioner would also aim to eliminate discrimination from schools, workplaces and communities.

GAY RIGHTS MONUMENT ON THE CARDS US President Barack Obama is considering the creation of a American national monument to the gay rights movement which is flagged to be built in parkland across the Stonewall Inn. The monument is intended to recognise the protests that erupted there after the police raided the bar in 1969. Those spontaneous protests, by mostly gay men who frequented the bar, are viewed by many as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. Stonewall has been granted landmark status by the city, even as it continues to serve as a watering hole that caters not only to the area’s gay residents, but also to tourists from around the world. “Stonewall deserves to be remembered,” said Brian Sullivan, a former bartender at the tavern who returns almost daily. “When I started coming here, gay people were disowned by their families, so this is the place where we formed a new gay family of our own.” NEWS&POLITICS

CANBERRA’S NATIONAL ARBORETUM TO BECOME THE NEW HOME FOR THE AIDS GARDEN OF REFLECTION There are two dates each year when HIV/AIDS get special attention – the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on the third Sunday of May and World AIDS Day on 1 December. However, it is the AIDS Memorials throughout the world which provide a daily opportunity to pay tribute and reflect on those who have lost their life to HIV and AIDS.

They have also been lobbying the federal and territory governments for a site in Canberra. Due to the tireless support of patron John Mackay, the AIDS Garden of Reflection has been granted a home at the National Arboretum in the Gallery of Gardens, a series of connected gardens to be located on the Arboretum’s Events Terrace, where a total of up to seven gardens will be developed in the future. The AIDS Garden of Reflection will be incorporated as an important part of the Arboretum’s master plan and vision. Located between the Village Centre and the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, this 500 square metre garden will feature a range of native plants and sculpture pieces by renowned landscape architects with generous community support. The space will provide, in perpetuity, a place of reflection so that the lives of people who have died from HIV and AIDS are not forgotten and their story is known by future generations. The garden is not only about remembrance and reflection but also about inspiration and action – most memorials are built after the struggle is over – there is no cure for HIV, people continue to be at risk and we need to work together to eliminate HIV in our community.

THE PROJECT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Throughout the world these memorials help to forge links between the generations, those who have lost a loved one and those who experience HIV as a treatable disease. They can be found on every continent and in the majority of capital cities. In Canberra, our national capital, there is currently no place for the community to gather and reflect on the impact of AIDS. WHAT ABOUT FREEDOM OF ENTERPRISE?

Same-sex marriage has become the norm in many Western countries. The US Supreme Court received significant attention after its decision on same-sex marriage, as did Ireland’s popular vote in 2015.

Some small sectors of the business community raise concerns that they might be forced to serve gay and lesbian people, thereby undermining freedom of enterprise. This is false.

The more extreme anti-LGBT legislation in the US has significantly harmed tourism. In the immediate aftermath of North Carolina passing its law, the town of Raleigh lost US$3 million from foregone tourism and business events. And the UK issued a travel warning pertaining to states with such discriminatory legislation. Parity of reasoning would imply that consistent attacks on what the US Supreme Court regards as a basic right would undermine Australia’s attractiveness as a tourist destination.

A cake for a gay wedding is simply a cake. Sexuality does not influence the nature of the service provided. Thus, allowing samesex marriage would not undermine freedom of enterprise — it would involve no change whatsoever to the goods and services that companies provide. Refusal to serve such customers for no reason other than an objection to their status as being gay is prima facie discrimination. In severe cases, such discrimination could arguably be implicit hate speech. The refusal to provide services constituting an implicit value judgement of that individual’s right to possess the human rights they believe heterosexual people should solely be entitled to.

Sydney’s Mardi Gras would look anomalous in a country that persistently attacks LGBT rights. However, the event attracts at least 375,000 people, and generates A$30 million in revenue. Over time, it is plausible that denying same-sex marriage would risk tourism-related economic benefits.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET FOR LABOUR Denying same-sex marriage could lead to difficulties attracting international talent in the long term. Australia’s current position has not yet adversely affected employment. However, a persistent failure to legalise same-sex marriage is equivalent to rejecting it. Companies in the US have reacted strongly to anti-same-sex marriage laws. After Indiana moved against it in 2015, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said the laws would discourage the company from spending in Indiana. Salesforce has reportedly helped employees uncomfortable with the law move out of Indiana. The company also considered shifting employees and a major conference from Georgia when it made a similar move against same-sex marriage. Similarly, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman advised states to reconsider such laws. He highlighted an unwillingness to operate in Indiana. The US examples have often been more overtly severe than simply refusing to acknowledge samesex marriage. They involve active changes to existing laws in order to discriminate between individuals. Australia currently is not changing an existing law. However, a repeated pattern of inaction to alter laws, over an extended period, could start to give the appearance of overtly discriminatory laws. 18

WHAT NOW? In supporting same-sex marriage, the government will help to highlight to the international business community that Australia is a welcoming country that will not discriminate based on sexuality. The Coalition’s proposed plebiscite will, based on opinion polling, return a vote in favour of legalising same-sex marriage if it is held. A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY EXPLORING THE LIVES OF THREE GAY PALESTINIAN FRIENDS IN TEL AVIV LIFE CAN SOMETIMES BE CHALLENGING, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR YOUNG LGBTIQ PEOPLE FINDING THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD. In Australia we are blessed with many freedoms and are lucky enough to have LGBTIQ support systems and community organisations we can turn to in times of need or trouble. Imagine what life might be like without that support and when daily challenges are weighed down with geopolitical, historical and combative religious issues thrown into the mix. That is what life is like for the queer community living within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has been documented in a new film called Oriented, by British filmmaker Jake Witzenfeld. In Oriented, which was filmed over 15 months, Jake Witzenfeld’s camera follows three young gay guys living in Tel Aviv: Khader Abu-Seif, Fadi Daeem, and Naeem Jiryes. According to their passports all three are Israeli, but all identify by their displaced heritage, as Palestinian men. Beyond identifying as Palestinian, each man has further layers of complexity in how they identify, and each with no interest in conforming to expectations that have been placed on them. Queer subject matter is rare in Middle Eastern cinema, and when they do appear they are rarely fun, and sadly often ill-fated.

He began socialising with them before he knew he wanted to make a documentary, but knew he had an interesting film when Naeem told him he planned to come out to his family. Witzenfeld told Vice Magazine, “I went through that whole thing with him. It was amazing that he gave me access, and it was also amazing just as a person to have that dialogue. It was nothing about being Palestinian. It was nothing about being Jewish. It was nothing about any of that. It was just about helping a friend. I think that intimacy comes through in the film.”

What is refreshing about Witzenfeld’s well-chosen subjects is how well-adjusted and normal they are. They cook, they hang out, they party and they post it all on social media, although they’re probably more politically active and aware than your average 20-something. The guys have formed a social group, ‘Qambuta’, a “nonviolence cultural resistance movement fighting for gender and national equality.” We visit their hometowns and meet their families and friends. Some are out at home, some aren’t, but what we see more often than not is family love and acceptance — another view of the Middle East our media rarely throws a light on. Witzenfeld’s camera shows Israel in warm tones and beautiful dreamy lighting. His subjects are relaxed in front of the camera — 15 months is enough time to really let your guard down.

I hope that this movie, both outside of Israel and within, validates opinions and questions people might have thought were taboo. And for those who aren’t into this, for people who hold these closeminded, dogmatic beliefs, I want Oriented to be the mouthpiece of shut the fuck up — through kindness, of course, by melting these hardened beliefs with portrayals of very human experiences. Beneath it all, I want Oriented to be the kick in the knees that gets people talking, because we need it. — Jake Witzenfeld

LOVE THAT HAS BEEN AS DEEP, BEAUTIFUL AND AS POWERFUL AS ANY OTHER HISTORY, LOVE THAT CAN NOT BE DENIED. Love has occupied our collective imagination since the beginning of time. It has baffled scientists, taunted philosophers, enthralled poets and tantalised artists. To celebrate the great same-sex loves that have existed throughout history, over the coming year we’ll be exploring the human heart’s highest capacity in expressing how we feel for another in some of history’s most beautiful and bewitching queer love letters and poems.

Celebrating gay love letters through history Bai Juyi (772–846), is considered one of the most loved and widely read Chinese poets. He was also a statesman who became the governor of Suzhow at the peak of his career and has been romantically linked with a range of fellow bureaucrats, exchanging with them romantic gifts and poetic letters.

When they reunited in 819, they carved a poem into the rock outside a cave. They meet again in 821 and again in 829, when they decided to live together in their retirement, but unfortunately Yuan Zhen died after a sudden illness. Bai Juyi wrote two requiems for the funeral of his beloved.

However, his greatest love was his fellow student Yuan Zhen (779–831). Their love affair continued for decades well after fate separated them and despite the 12 month time frame it took for their letters to reach one another.

Many people are now asking for their insurance to be reviewed to ensure they will get a payment if they claim. Despite these new concerns, being properly insured is still important. The fact is no one liked paying for insurance and many people are paying for insurance they just don’t need, however on the flip side some people are way under insured (or not insured) leaving them vulnerable. It’s important you get the balance right. Insurance protects us against all sorts of risks including loss of property, accidents, loss of income, medical treatment and death. We pay a fee and transfer our risk to someone else.

The cover you need depends on your situation and what ‘risks’ are most relevant to you. If you have dependents and debts your needs would be different to someone who is debt free and retired or someone who is single. I always have a laugh about the different things that have been insured over the years! Reportedly Daniel Craig (James Bond) has insured his whole body for $9.5 million and Jennifer Lopez’s ‘butt’ is insured for upwards of $27 million. So do you have your assets protected? Most people insure their cars but only 30% of people insure themselves to protect their most valuable asset — their ability to earn money. With insurance, if you can’t work tomorrow because of illness or injury, then you will receive insurance payments for the period you are unable to work. Insurance is about risk transfer, so you should think about worst-case scenarios and outcomes. If you could not work again, what would you want the outcome to be? If you or your partner died, how would that leave things financially? Insurances are all about ‘contract law’ and it’s important to understand the contract you have in place and ensure you will get a payment when you expect it. For example, a life insurance policy with ‘Accidental Death’ definition is not as strong as a ‘Fully Underwritten’ policy. It will only pay out if you accidently die, rather than die from natural causes. You have obligations under the insurance legislation to notify the company of any prior health conditions. Insurance companies are slowly changing their assessments, especially around chronic health conditions such as diabetes and HIV. It is no longer the case that an insurance company would automatically exclude or not accept your policy. The number of mental health claims has risen so this is always an area where they will want further information.

If you are a member of a super fund it is likely that you are paying some additional insurance premiums. Superannuation can work well to fund your insurance strategy for certain cover. The value of advice can mean mapping out your needs and situation rather than just providing a pure instruction for a level of cover. FUSE: Since those days, with the exception of a select few venues, we’ve seen gay bars really struggle here in Canberra and the community has become pretty sceptical about the survival of any queer venture. What are your thoughts?

Tucked away in the Melbourne Building, 16West is a stylish bar complete with large picture windows overlooking a fairy light filled street, oversized armchairs and a beautifully appointed bar. You’ll feel at home straight away. 16West is already becoming a favourite spot for after work and weekend drinks and community gatherings.

Lynne: Running any type of entertainment venue or bar is tough at the best of times and many fail. It takes experience and lots of hard work. In the case of a LGBTIQ venue it also takes the support of the community. I feel its important that the venue also provide for the needs of the community and builds on its spirit. At 16West we will work hard to provide just that, in a warm and welcoming venue.

16West is the dream child of owners Lynne O’Brien and Kim Ware, who are veterans of Canberra’s queer nightlife scene. Excited about this new venue for the community, we sat down with Lynne for a quick chat. FUSE: What made you decide to takeover the old Muddle Bar? Lynne: Kim and I have been wanting to open a new queer bar for sometime now and have been looking for a central and funky space in the city. The Muddle Bar was such a lovely spot when it was open a while back and we knew straight away it would be the perfect home for the new bar. FUSE: Lots of people remember the Meridian Club and dancing the night away at Heaven Nightclub in the 90s, both successful venues in their time. Do you have many memories of those days? Lynne: Kim and I were recently reminiscing about the exciting Heaven days. We had a lot of fun and partied hard in those days. It wasn’t unusual for us to start work at 9.00pm and finish 10.00am the next day. Things were pretty different back then. In the nineties, we did not have social media as we all know it today — instead we relied on the clubs membership base of over 1500 people and we used snail mail and word of mouth to let the community know what was coming up at the club. Heaven allowed us to provide a huge range of fantastic entertainment styles and genres. It was also a great meeting space for the arts community and although 16WEST is a smaller and more intimate venue, we aim to offer a similar style of entertainment and overall experience to the community.

In our efforts to support the LGBTIQ community, we have recently launched the ‘16West Support Donation Program’ which will help raise funds for many local and vital community groups. This initiative, and 16West itself, provides the means to help build community sentiment and camaraderie within its own ranks. FUSE: So what else can we expect from 16West? Lynne: It’s still early days, but we feel the bar has a lot going for it. We have plans to upgrade the kitchen, extend the opening hours and start offering some live entertainment ,as well as weekly events and specials. As the saying goes ‘watch this space’. We’ve already had lots of interest and bookings for private parties, community events and functions. We are also rolling out some fabulous live music, karaoke and of course you can probably expect some drag performances as well. Expect 16West to be around for the long haul.

AIDEN SITS NERVOUSLY IN THE WAITING ROOM OF HIS LOCAL SEXUAL HEALTH CLINIC. THE WAITING ROOM OF A SEXUAL HEALTH CLINIC CAN FEEL LIKE PURGATORY. SKIPPING THROUGH FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO NOT START LISTING AND RECALLING EVERY AFFAIR, FLING AND HOOK-UP SINCE HIS LAST CHECK-UP. “How many has it been? Is it really that many? Did I use condoms every time? Did they? Did any break? Was there enough lube? Can you get anything from handjobs? We were caught up in the moment. That happens to everyone, doesn’t it? I’m sure one of the guys said he was on PrEP. You don’t need condoms for that! Do you? But that’s only for HIV. “How long ago was my last check-up? 6 months ago? 12 months ago? Maybe it’s been longer. Surely not! I don’t think I’ve had any symptoms. Not everything has symptoms! “I’m never having sex again. I need to get rid of all those hookup apps. Wait, I’m supposed to see the cute barista next Tuesday. After that! Definitely deleting after that… It has been a while since Aiden was last tested and even though he knows using condoms helps prevent HIV and other STIs, he isn’t sure he has always been covered. None of that matters right now because now it’s time to take control and get tested. Regardless of the results, he is now doing something about it. “Aiden?” calls the nurse. Aiden gets to his feet, trying to look calm and not too anxious. He is guided down the corridor by a nurse, he introduces himself as Daryl and asks about Aidan’s day. Aiden starts to relax but is still nervous as he enters the consultation room.

Daryl takes Aiden’s paperwork and asks some general questions about his health and if he has noticed any symptoms he might be worried about. Daryl notices how long since Aiden last tested. He congratulates him for coming back and asks if he has any concerns. They discuss Aiden’s recent sexual history after Daryl explains that it is to help work out the best tests to use. Daryl suggests a comprehensive screening, which includes taking oral swabs and blood samples, and then Aiden can privately collect anal swabs and a urine sample. Aiden is shown how to take his own samples after the blood and oral collection are done. Daryl and Aiden discuss that he will get his HIV result via SMS within 24 hours and a few days later for his other test results. Daryl says they will contact him immediately if they require more tests. Aiden is confident that no matter the result he is being cared for and that he will receive any help that he may need. He makes another appointment for three months’ time with the receptionist on his way out. Fear of testing is common, but delaying treatment can lead to serious complications and makes HIV and STIs harder to treat. We can end HIV transmissions by 2020, but we need guys like Aiden to get tested two to four times per year. GETTING THE FIRST TEST CAN BE THE HARDEST, BUT ALSO THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS! THE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY SO MANY WOMEN WANT TO BEFRIEND GAY MEN FOR YEARS, FRIENDSHIPS BETWEEN STRAIGHT WOMEN AND GAY MEN HAVE BEEN A SUBJECT OF POP CULTURE FASCINATION. Books, television shows and feature length films have all highlighted this unique relationship, noted for its closeness and depth. But with society’s attitudes toward gays and lesbians changing, it’s become all the more important to build a holistic understanding of the relationships between gay and straight people. As a researcher in social psychology, I’ve often wondered: why do straight female-gay male relationships work so well? Why are straight women so drawn to having gay men as friends? And when do these relationships typically form? During the course of my research, I’ve discovered that the most interesting, compelling – and, arguably, most theoretically coherent – explanation is through the lens of evolution. Specifically, I believe evolutionary psychology and human mating can help explain why relationships between straight women and gay men tend to flourish.

IT’S A SAFE BET At first glance, this explanation may seem quite counter-intuitive. (After all, straight women and gay men don’t mate with one another.) However, this is precisely the reasoning behind my approach. Because gay men don’t mate with women – or compete with them for mates – women feel a certain level of comfort with gay men, and the process of forming a close friendship can occur relatively quickly. With heterosexual men (who, by definition, are sexually attracted to women), the process is longer – and potentially more fraught – because men may be grappling with their own sexual impulses. In other words, because gay men are attracted to their own gender, they’re a “safe bet” for women – at least, from a sociobiological standpoint. About three years ago, I initially tested this theory in a series of experiments that have served as the foundation of my research program on gay-straight relationships. In these experiments, straight female participants were shown fictitious Facebook profiles depicting either a straight woman, straight man or gay man. The female participants were then asked how likely they would be to trust the individual’s dating advice. FUSEFEATURE

I also recruited gay male participants, and had them complete the same task (with the gay men viewing Facebook profiles depicting a straight female, gay male or lesbian female). The experiments, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, demonstrated that straight women and gay men perceived one another to be trustworthy sources of relationship and dating advice. In other words, when it came to dating-related matters, there was an almost instantaneous level of implicit trust. Still, more needed to be done to support the hypothesis.

CRACKING THE WHY AND WHEN Recently, my colleagues and I developed a series of four related studies. We titled the four studies “Why (and When) Straight Women Trust Gay Men: Ulterior Mating Motives and Female Competition,” with the hope of better establishing why straight women trust gay men and when straight women would be most likely to seek out gay men for friendship and guidance. For the first study, I wanted to replicate the finding that women trust gay men more than straight men or straight women. This time, however, I wanted to see if women would only trust gay men’s dating-related advice as opposed to other types of advice. It turns out straight women only trusted a gay man’s advice about a potential boyfriend more than the same advice from, say, a straight man or another straight woman. In other words, it’s not like straight women totally trusted gay men on all matters. It really only had to do with one thing: dating and relationships. To further examine why this might be the case, we had women imagine receiving information from either a straight woman, straight man, or a gay man about their physical appearance and the dateability of potential boyfriends. We then asked the women how sincere they felt the responses were. As expected, the female subjects seemed to perceive the judgments coming from the gay man to be more sincere because they knew that he wouldn’t have any ulterior motives – whether that meant wooing the subject (which they might suspect of straight men) or competing for the same romantic partner (straight women). For the final two studies, we wanted to figure out when women were most likely to befriend and place their trust in gay men. We predicted that this would most often occur in highly competitive dating environments, where a trustworthy source like a gay friend would be valued by women jockeying with one another for a boyfriend. To test this, we created a fake news article that detailed extremely skewed sex ratios, indicating that women in college were competing over a very small pool of men. We had women read this news article and then indicate how much they would trust a straight woman or a gay man in various dating-related scenarios. 36

When women read the news article about the increased competition, their trust in gay men was amplified. Not only were women more apt to trust gay men under this condition, but we also found that they became more willing to make gay male friends.

BEYOND DATING ADVICE The downside is that if a straight woman values her gay male friends only for dating advice, the relationship could become quite superficial. However, the strong trust that women initially form with gay men can serve as a primer; eventually, this trust could extend to other areas, with the friendship blossoming over time. Other findings – combined with our own – show that there seems to be an extremely strong psychological underpinning to why women are so drawn to gay men. For instance, a recent study in the Journal of Business and Psychology revealed that straight women tend to hire gay men over other heterosexual individuals because they perceive gay men to be more competent and warmer. Furthermore, marketing researchers have suggested that straight women prefer to work with gay male sales associates over others in consumer retail settings. These two findings alone could have many positive implications for gay men in the workplace. Because many women seem to value input and contributions of gay men in these settings, it’s likely that we’ll see a more inclusive workplace environment for gay men. Although much of this research focuses on why women are drawn to friendships with gay men, another obvious avenue of exploration is whether or not gay men are similarly keen to form friendships with straight women. Unfortunately, there’s been very little research on this. However, it’s possible that gay men connect with straight women for some of the same reasons. For example, in a study I recently conducted I found that gay men also look to women for trustworthy dating advice or tips for finding a prospective boyfriend. Other researchers have suggested that gay men value the positive attitudes towards homosexuality that women tend to have (relative to straight men). Aquarius

January 21 – February 18 You will feel empowered over the next couple of months and it’s a great time to put some order in your life. This will be a quieter period for reflection and development. Put those plans you have been developing since December last year into action.

Taurus

April 21 – May 21 A New Moon on the 7th May will have you feeling attractive and desirable. This is a wonderful time to try meditation to harmonise your psyche. Breathe those lunar beams into your abdomen and awaken your power. Early June is ideal for quiet reflection.

Dear Rose, My GF has recently moved overseas. She’s keen on continuing a long distance relationship but I feel it’s just too far and I may only see her a few times over the next 3 years. She feels Skype is just as good as being in the same room. I’m not convinced. Jess

Dear Rose, I like older women and have recently been messing around with a close friend’s mum. She is about 20 years older than me but I really like her. I don’t think it’s going to go down well with my friend. Any thoughts. Lizzie

Dear Jess, I can understand why you aren’t convinced that Skype can be used to maintain a relationship. Long distance relationships are very difficult to maintain at the best of times and require a massive commitment, trust and a clear understanding of what the end result will be, not only for your GF but also for yourself.

Dear Lizzie, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the moment you started messing around with your friend’s mum is the moment you put your friendship with your close friend in jeopardy. Right now is the moment you need to decide if this new relationship has the potential of being a long-term thing. I say this because if this new relationship is serious, you need to address this issue with your friend now before she finds out on her own. Finding out this kind of information other than from you would be incredibly hurtful and disrespectful of your friendship. At least by being honest, you can both find a way to navigate the situation as respectfully as you can.

Remember, it is early days and things have a funny way of changing rapidly, things may not turn out as well for your GF overseas and she may find herself coming back sooner than she planned. Alternatively, opportunities for you to go overseas and join her may manifest out of nowhere. Usually the sixth month is a good milestone to revisit how you both feel about the long distance relationship and whether it is working for you both.

Dear Rose, My BF has recently started hanging out with his X again and I can’t stand the guy. They are like best mates and always seem so happy hanging out. I trust my BF but feel physically nauseous whenever they are together. I feel like the third wheel in my home. DJ

Dear DJ, A tough situation, on the one hand if you make a big deal about this your BF may feel you don’t trust him and on the other hand, if you do nothing the situation impacts on your own wellbeing. As with all things “relationship”, you have to find the delicate balance and a middle ground between them. The solution to any relationship issue is always communication and you need to let your BF know how you feel. You should also remember there are reasons why your BF and his X broke up, and the fact your BF is having a relationship with you now. Chances are now they are spending more time together some of those issues will arise and remind your BF of the reasons why they broke up in the first place.
