❂ EXPRESS YOURSELF! CREATING EQUALITY On Saturday 4 March, I marched and partied with over 250,000 of my best friends... well, maybe they weren’t all my ‘best’ friends, but there is something about the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras which seems to bring everyone together with tremendous love and friendship. Although it rained a little on our parade — sorry Fred Nile, I don’t think it was your praying — it was a truly amazing night, filled with glitter, giant smiles and diversity. This year’s theme was ‘Creating Equality’ and highlighted that everyone should be treated fairly and equally, with no one being discriminated against for their sexuality, sex, gender identity, race, beliefs, age or abilities. The theme literally created a sea of self-expression and I was honoured to be part of it — thousands of people showing their support for the continuing fight for equality and recognition.

As most people already know Mardi Gras originally started as a political protest on a cold Winter’s night on Saturday 24 June 1978. The protest, which was in part a response of the Stonewall riots in New York, sadly ended in violence and the arrest of 53 men and women. Being anything other than heterosexual was certainly not celebrated back then. Lucky for us many LGBTIQ people have been fighting hard for our rights for almost forty years, and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is now one of the largest and most iconic celebrations of LGBTIQ pride in the world. Although we still have some equality battles to win, it’s amazing just how far we have come. Next year will be the 40th anniversary and I’m sure we will all be super excited to celebrate this amazing milestone. On p27 you’ll find the start of our special FUSE 2017 Mardi Gras photo feature.

2017 LGBTIQ BUSINESS & COMMUNITY DIRECTORY COMING OUT THIS APRIL Also in this issue of FUSE we look at some practical steps you can take to keep you safe while using dating apps p19. We can’t forget our Canberra SpringOUT Festival photos, which include Fair Day, the FUSE Bake Off and Bushdance p43. And if you love wine and food you better turn to p36 right now! DID YOU KNOW? Interracial marriages were illegal in the United States until 1967 when the Supreme Court deemed anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional. (Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S.)

LOVING OPENS 16 MARCH Sadly, the fight for marriage equality is nothing new and some 50 years ago, another case essentially arguing that ‘love is love’ presented itself to the US Supreme Court. Although Richard and Mildred Loving lived in the segregated state of Virginia, the white man and black woman, childhood sweethearts, travelled to Washington to marry; an act which the law in their home state did not take kindly to. Jeff Nichols (Mud; Midnight Special) presents an understated but not-no-less powerful story of unwavering love in the face of ignorance, aided by two terrific performances from Joel Edgerton and the Oscar-nominated Ruth Negga.

FUSE MOVIE PICK OF THE MONTH!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST OPENS 23 MARCH After the success of Cinderella (2015) and last year’s The Jungle Book (just shy of grossing $1 billion), Disney will be hoping the latest of their animated back catalogue to get the live-action treatment will also perform just as magically at the box office. Directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) Emma Watson (The Perks of Being A Wallflower) and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) fill the titular roles in this re-imagining of the animated musical, which was the first of its kind (in 1991) to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

TABLE 19 OPENS 20 APRIL You can usually gauge your importance to the bride or groom by how closely you are seated to them at their wedding (and with whom you’ve been seated). For Eloise (Anna Kendrick), who has just broken up with the best man and been relieved of her maid of honour duties, it still comes a surprise that she’s been relegated to social Siberia, aka Table 19. Joined by a diverse group of outcasts (played by Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, June Squibb and Tony Revolori), Eloise decides to make the most of the celebrations, including possible romance with a hunky Aussie (Thomas Cocquerel).

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 OPENS 24 APRIL It’s the movie we’ve all be waiting for and that means it’s also time to save the galaxy yet again! A human male, an alien female, a tree creature and a wise-talking raccoon — it’s not the start of a joke but it was the make up of a ragtag group who combined to make one of the most fun films of 2014, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Peter Quill (played by the very hot Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) are all back for this sequel, with James Gunn again at the helm; the quartet once again causing chaos across the galaxy as they investigate Quill’s mysterious past.

ROUND UP

GRINDR EXTORTION RING

Four young men have been arrested when ACT police cracked a syndicate that have been threatening to publicly “out” gay and bisexual men — who they lured through Grindr — as paedophiles, if they didn’t hand over their phones and cash. The teens have been charged with blackmail, as well as other drug 02 6257 2855 aidsaction.org.au contact@aidsaction.org.au offences. Magistrate Lorraine Walker said the accused appeared to be driven by financial gain and “a perverted sense of morality”. The police also found online messages exchanged with a Canberra man who tragically committed suicide. It showed the defendant had discussed meeting him and was among a group who visited his house the night before he died. The court heard the alleged victim’s phone had been active after his death and the accused had advertised that same model of mobile phone for sale on Gumtree.

ACT LABOR REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR EQUALITY Labor has once again affirmed it’s support for marriage equality and in addition, a Senate Select Committee released a consensus report on a sensible way forward to delivering marriage equality, while also respecting religious freedom. This report hopefully puts us a step closer to marriage equality in Australia. Now, of course there’s only one thing left to do — for our federal representatives to get on with having a free vote in the Australian Parliament. This day will come and hopefully soon. Love is love, which is why ACT Labor MLA’s and their colleagues told Canberran’s that they will continue to advocate for equality in the ACT.

As part of the ACT Government’s show of support, on Valentine’s Day and the weeks following it celebrated by flying rainbow flags in Canberra.

MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN FINLAND Same-sex marriage is now legal in Finland. Although the legislation serves as a triumph for marriage equality advocates, there’s a caveat. The Finnish Lutheran church is still divided on the issue, and some old rules concerning marriage between men and women still apply, meaning same-sex couples who wish to be married in a church are left waiting in the wings. However, some priests are defying the clergy’s opposition saying they are willing to officiate same-sex weddings.

“This Valentine’s Day we’ll be celebrating how far we’ve come as a city,” ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said in his Facebook video. “Canberra is Australia’s most LGBTI-inclusive city and we want to celebrate that this week, and also show our support for marriage equality in Australia.” Not surprisingly The Australian Christian Lobby immediately launched a campaign arguing that rainbow flags should not be flown on public land. The ACL’s Director Lyle Shelton said, “The rainbow flag has become the standard of a political movement that believes children should be taught their gender is fluid at a ‘safe school’, something many parents would take issue with... It is the flag of the movement to redefine marriage — a movement that is pushing for children to be denied their biological parents through unethical assisted reproductive practices such as commercial surrogacy and anonymous sperm donation.“ Nutty stuff from the The Australian Christian Lobby, but there you go! TRUMP-ENOMICS

FAKE NEWS, ALTERNATIVE FACTS, BAD HAIR AND YOUR MONEY The good news is share markets both in Australia and the United States have shown positive returns since Trump won the presidency. This could continue if his ‘pro-business’ and infrastructure policies are well implemented. Trump has claimed these gains as entirely his, but we have been seeing confidence return to markets in the US over the last few years following the Global Financial Crisis back in 2007. Future noise around this could also have an impact. Additionally, all sorts of things are currently going on worldwide: ‘Brexit’, ‘Trump’ ‘European debt issues’ — all things we have little control over.

Trump said that if he was elected President he would have to change his hair because he would have no time to care for it.

“I WOULD PROBABLY COMB MY HAIR BACK.” Unfortunately he never accounted for wind!

SO IT HAPPENED! WE NOW HAVE A 70 YEAR OLD UNPREDICTABLE REALITY TV ‘STAR’ WITH BAD HAIR ELEVATED TO PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

In the opening moments of his presidency, Trump used his inaugural speech to paint a bleak picture of the US economy where the working class had been left to languish in “carnage.” However in early March the president appeared to take a much brighter view of the US economy, keying off a monthly job growth report to declare, via a retweet, that the American economy was “GREAT AGAIN: +235,000.” But while Trump’s fortunes may have changed, it’s not so clear that life has changed for many of his supporters who are still in economic distress. Indeed, the jobs report that Trump now touts as proof of a financial renaissance shows the economic outlook pretty much the same as it was before he took office. (Source: Washington Post) So when it comes to your investment strategies it is all about having a good framework in place which is targeted towards achieving your goals.

Not surprisingly, I have recently had clients asking me how this may impact their investment strategies and the economy in general.

Make sure you are not investing in only one asset or asset class. As a general rule, having a diversified portfolio or approach will give you good returns over time.

The first thing I usually say is the world is always changing. Change is the one guarantee in life, but it shouldn’t change the narrative with how you approach your financial strategy.

I use an aged based rule with clients to split between defensive assets (debt based investments such as cash in your bank and fixed interest from government and corporate entities) and growth assets (equity based investments such as property and share holdings).

In this age of instant information and updates it is not surprising that share markets now have a perception of being more volatile (quick swings in capital value), especially as we are able to buy and sell from smart phones and tablets in an instant. This has created more price movements as people respond quickly to information… and indeed Tweets.

If you are in your thirties, placing 30% into defensive assets and 70% into growth assets can be a good approach. Once you get into your forties, fifties and sixties then adjust this to 40%, 50% and 60% respectively for defensive assets, with the balance in growth assets.

Trump has concerned many with his executive orders and the appearance of ‘alternative facts’. In my mind this is taking the world backwards, but that is writing for another day!

This means that as you get closer to retirement you take growth assets off the table as they provide greater capital volatility. We all have different ideal requirements for ‘comfort’ in retirement or once we reach financial freedom, so make sure you work to your plan, not someone else’s. Seek out further advice, try to avoid the noise and distractions along the way, and start your journey to being free around your money and creating wealth with understanding.

SO YOU’RE DATING AN

earth sign

CAPRICORN • TAURUS • VIRGO

PRACTICAL LOVERS, EARTH SIGNS ARE STABLE, GENTLE, TOLERANT, HARD WORKING, AND ARE BLESSED WITH PLENTY OF GOOD OLD COMMON SENSE. Although it should be simple — as most earth signs are similar in nature — their compatibility with other signs in the zodiac is complex, as each earth sign has very different requirements for successful and happy relationships. Some matches like Taurus and Libra can be totally disastrous.

Solid, and dependable lovers

Capricorn Lovers : make you laugh The old fashion lover — out of all the star signs a Capricorn may actually be on Grindr or Tinder looking for love. They like being wooed in the traditional manner and are looking for a serious partner to spend their life with. Once they get close they will reveal a well-hidden but killer sense of humour. Never make fun of your Capricorn as they are easily embarrassed and can be somewhat self-conscious — it can be a relationship killer, so beware. Capricorns don’t rush sex and can usually be relied upon to give full satisfaction, no matter how long it takes. Their highly developed self-control gives them the stamina to stay the course, expressing themselves in a straightforward and natural way.

People born under Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn are solid, dependable lovers and have earthy, sensual natures. They enjoy a quiet home life, security and daily routine. Those graced by an earth sign in their stars are very practical, grounded and dependable people. Earth signs don’t take risks very often as they usually prefer a sure thing. They feel best once they have accumulated a decent number of worldly possessions and have a comfortable, stable home. They can sometime become greedy and materialistic in their endeavour to feather their nests. Earth signs have a strong sense of duty and responsibility, and are very protective to those close to them. These are the people you can count on to be there when you need them. They are often lead by caution and conservatism, in both their desire and approach — measured, slow and steady. On their darker side, they may get caught up with their objectives and overlook the feelings of others. It is a big picture, after all, but these folks may be more concerned with the finish line than the journey they are taking.

Powerful and instinctive sensuality

Taurus Lovers : skilled & loyal Taurus people are exceptional and skilled lovers. You can always depend on them for consistently good sex. A Taurus lover is also a loyal lover, if he/she says I’m working late at the office tonight — they are doing exactly that! These hard workers love the finer things of life; good food, good wine, theatre and art. If you’re courting a Taurus, don’t be in a rush as they take things slow and steady. It often takes a Taurus a lot of effort to summon the courage to approach you so don’t lead them on if you’re not interested. If you are, be up front in letting them know their attentions will be well-received. Be patient and you’ll be rewarded with a lifetime of constancy, beautiful things, safety and love.

Virgo Lovers : technique wizards

Earth signs enjoy the finer things of life

Virgos have high standards, especially when seeking a lover, they tend to be fussy about who measures up. Although they don’t usually rush you off to the bedroom, technique is their fascination, which gives their lovemaking an unexpected finesse. The Virgo mantra of ‘practice makes perfect’ is something they are happy to apply diligently to sex. Virgos can be prone to internalising their anxieties about their physical desirability, so let them know how fantastic and beautiful they are. STARGAZER

DID YOU KNOW? Although one of Marvel Comic’s lesser know superheroes, Stephen Vincent Strange (Doctor Strange) has been saving the Marvel universe for a while, with the character first appearing in Strange Tales #110 in July 1963.

DOCTOR STRANGE

I, DANIEL BLAKE

Departing slightly from their template, Marvel’s most recent outing explores the origins of one of its lesser known heroes, Doctor Strange. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch (TV’s Sherlock), Stephen Strange is a brilliant but arrogant surgeon whose career is upended in a car accident. Venturing to Asia, he studies the mystic arts under The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton); skills which will come in handy when he has to battle former Ancient One disciple, Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen). Not dissimilar to Iron Man, it’s the trippy visuals which sets Scott Derrickson’s film apart from its Marvel stablemates.

One of the best films of 2016, Ken Loach’s angry rebuke of the British Government’s failure to support its most vulnerable citizens gains more resonance given recent political scandals here. Unable to work after a heart attack, Daniel (Dave Johns) can’t receive welfare support unless he actively looks for employment; the uncaring bureaucracy seeing only a number not a person. But a person can only take so much before they fight back. Hayley Squires is also terrific in Loach’s award-winning film which, although not subtle, is powerful.

LITTLE MEN

LA LA LAND

Fans of Ira Sachs’s previous films, Keep The Lights On (2012) and Love Is Strange (2014), will be aware of the writer-director’s gift for examining everyday New York lives at a crossroads in an unhurried and unembellished style. Unlike those titles, Little Men is not a queer film but rather focuses on the friendship between two 13-year-olds whose relationship is tested when their parents have a falling out over real estate. Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets) and Jennifer Ehle (TV’s Pride and Prejudice) star, but it’s the boys (Theo Taplitz and Michael Barbieri) who will win (and possibly break) your heart.

After scoring a record-equalling 14 Oscar nominations, Damien Chazelle’s musical was widely tipped to dance away with the Best Picture Oscar having already won awards — and hearts — across the globe. And then... This original movie musical tells the story of two dreamers — Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Seb (Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist — who pursue their artistic passions whilst falling in and out of love in modern day Los Angeles. Stone (who did win the Best Actress Oscar) and Gosling have chemistry to burn in this charming romantic number.

STRANGER DANGER

HONESTLY, WE’RE NOT TRYING TO SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF YOU, BUT THE TRUTH IS THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM ONLINE

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR SAFE ONLINE DATING Women and men all over the world have kissed fate goodbye and have turned their attention to finding love online. In recent months, it seems like we have been hearing of more and more incidents where something unfortunate has happened to individuals as a result of using online dating apps or social media. Whether you’re lesbian, gay, bi, trans or straight, dating apps and websites are a great way to connect with other people, whether it’s looking for a relationship or just exploring new encounters. But sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the heat of the moment and we can make decisions that place us in harms way.

1. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS It’s important that you always stay in control of your situation. Sometimes you just know when something does not feel right. If you’re chatting to someone online and they say things that raise your suspicions, consider ending the conversation or blocking the person. If you’re hooking up with someone new and you feel uncomfortable in any way, leave (or ask them to leave) and do it quickly and without fuss. Some warning signs may be: urging you to compromise your principles; asking inappropriate questions; telling inconsistent or grandiose stories; putting undue pressure to meet up; or having profile photos and stats that don’t seem to be right.

2. DON’T GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION Online identity theft, blackmailing and stalking happens online — it’s an unfortunate fact — so it’s vital that you are extremely careful with your personal information. If things go bad you’ll feel better that you have not told your new online friend your last name, where you work, where you live or any other identifying information.

When dating online or organising a hook up, safety should be your number one priority. Your instincts and judgment are an incredibly powerful tool in protecting yourself, and there is no substitution for acting with caution when communicating and meeting someone for the first time. Below are some essential tips for safely navigating your online dating experience. Of course this list is by no means exhaustive and these tips are not fool proof — we are talking harm reduction here.

If your new interest turns out to be a unsavoury person, or something worse, then you don’t want to give them anything that helps them make mischief. Remember once you’ve given out personal information that can potentially be used to bully, harass and threaten, you cannot take it back!

3. DON’T INCLUDE YOUR FACE WITH YOUR BODY PHOTOS When things get steamy, often those more personal photos get shared. A good rule of thumb is never send a photo you would not want your boss, your mother or your friends to see. Your nude and X-rated photos should never include your face. If you are sending photos of yourself that include your face, make them G-rated. In truth you have no idea who you are really chatting with, so don’t send any images that would give a stranger something that could potentially be used against you or for blackmail purposes. ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR SAFE ONLINE DATING

4. USE A BUDDY SYSTEM Letting a close friend you trust know when you’re going out to meet someone new or ‘hooking up’ is a great way of adding a layer of protection. Tell them the time you’ll be out, your location and have a check-in time with them so they know things are all going okay. Have your buddies number at the ready on your mobile phone and consider creating a code-word you can use that you can quickly say or text to let them know you are in trouble. One other tip that some people suggest is to text your buddy a photo of the person you are going to meet. If things go very badly, there will be an image that police can use. Also, after your hook up or date, make sure you contact your close friend and let them know you are on your way home, regardless of how things went.

5. MEET HER OR HIM SOMEWHERE PUBLIC The safest option in meeting someone new is in public — at least for the initial meeting. Safe places include a café, your local pub or even the mall. Avoid dark areas or quiet places where there are no other people around, just in case things go pear-shaped.

SO YOU’VE DECIDED TO HOST IF YOU HAVE DECIDED THAT YOU’RE GOING TO HOST YOUR NEW FRIEND, HERE ARE A FEW GOLDEN RULES! 1. Put your valuables like your wallet, money, keys, etc out of sight and in a secure place. 2. Make sure your buddy knows that you have someone coming over and when. 3. Have a plan if you need to get the person out of your home. 4. Have an emergency — or your buddies — phone number on favourites and keep your phone close at hand. 5. Don’t let your hook up talk you into anything you’re uncomfortable with, and remember: safe sex is ‘smart sex’.

6. BE PICKY Always remember you’re special and you deserve to be safe no matter what it is you’re seeking online. Don’t sell yourself short! Just because you haven’t dated or hooked up in a while doesn’t mean you should settle. In the same regard, don’t continue chatting or meet with any person who doesn’t have a photo on their profile or won’t send you one. This is a major warning sign and not a person you want to be meeting — block!

6. If you’ve had a nice time and everything went well, don’t just rush your new visitor out the door. You’re never going to find ‘the one’ if you don’t stop to communicate and get to know the person you are with. Intimacy is so much more than just about sex. 7. Talk about how you feel and if you want to see each other again — be honest and up front. By having this conversation you can save yourself all that anxiety about what happens next. 8. All is good. Call your buddy to let them know you’re safe. FUSEMAGAZINE.COM.AU

HOLDEN CRUZE MAKES WAY FOR ASTRA! A NEW-GENERATION FIVE DOOR

This is the fifth generation Holden Astra sold in Australia. Developed by Opel with some input from Holden, the Poland-made five door hatchback is based on a new platform and slightly smaller than its predecessor.

ASTRA HAS BEEN A NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH HOLDEN SINCE 1984 AND THE NEW MODEL WAS AWARDED THE 2016 EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR. The first thing you notice about the Astra R is its super sharp looks with the “hovering” roofline and raked side windows. Once inside, the black contemporary interior has a flush 7-inch touchscreen, simple layout, contrasting trims and very comfortable fabric seats. The back seats are nicely shaped for support and for a small car the interior felt generous to me — front and back. The boot passed our all important Costco and Ikea test, being deceptively large, plus the rear seats fold down for increased luggage space and include the standard child seat anchors for the little ones. The only gripe I had with the Astra interior was that the indicator stalk is on the right hand side instead of the left like most cars built for Aussies — YIPPEE! — I found it difficult to get used too. The base model Astra R came well equipped with 17-inch alloys, auto headlights, daytime running lights, durable cloth seats with manual adjustment, air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry, a digital speedo with trip computer, a rear-view camera with rear sensors, plus an intuitive infotainment system and stop/start feature to improve city economy.

The Astra R performed well. It’s rocking a 1.4 litre engine with a turbocharger to increase drivability and economy. The engine was well mated to a 6-speed electronic controlled automatic gearbox. As a package it all worked well. If you are into performance however, you might want to reach further into your pocket for the RS-V model with the bigger 1.6 litre engine and more power and torque that is available at lower revs. In other words, it’s more driveable. Not that I could fault the 1.4L Astra R, but if you are sporty minded, you may wish to look further up the range. There are plenty of options that allow you to personalise your Astra and the choice of colours is pretty exciting. It’s refreshing to see a few extra colours in the range when there is so much silver, grey and charcoal on offer from other manufacturers. Pricing is sharper than a chef’s knife set with some drive-away specials on 2016 plated cars. Overall, the new Astra feels ‘sure-footed’ and compliant on the road with a good balance between handling and comfort. It rides and presents well, offers good value for money and is a quality contender in its category. TOPQUEER

By Lisa Grant Relationship Counsellor & Sex Therapist

I LIKE YOU... A LOT! NO MATTER OUR SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR GENDER, IT IS SOCIAL MEDIA, MOVIES, ANECDOTES AND URBAN MYTHOLOGY TELLING US THAT ONE DAY WE’LL MEET THAT PERFECT PERSON WE’RE MEANT TO BE WITH AND WE’LL FALL MADLY IN LOVE. The emphasis is on fortunate happenstance and the mysterious fairytale meeting of two people who are destined to be each other’s life partner is often something that, although beautifully romantic, is not often based on reality. Often there is little space and thought in this narrative given to alternative and less heteronormative relationships; the meeting and matching, and extra layers of complexity that might need to be navigated. Likewise these ‘love stories’ don’t give much airplay to those who prefer their solitude, or only occasional forays into companionship and connection. In spite of the non-inclusive shortcomings of the messaging, it’s still easy to get caught up in pursuing this magical meeting and connection, and to think that there must be something wrong with us when — and if — it doesn’t happen. Given this, it’s a bit of an oversight that the popular mythology doesn’t also embrace the thought that there will be others we meet, who may, if given a chance, be just the person we’re looking for.

So what is this thing called attraction? What makes us gravitate to a particular physical type, to favour a look, a style, broad shoulders, blue eyes? What makes us insistent that we need a particular type of person in our lives, and makes us not notice others who vie for our interest, and who, as they approach us, get in return the dull stare of disinterest or the blank look of distraction. We buzz around each other in a dance of connection. We are hardwired to connect with one another socially and sexually in the way that social species do. Woven through the dance is the internal chatter and dialogue about the acceptable and the not so thrilling; the prospective others we let through into our view, and those who are filtered out. As author and philosophical observer Alain de Botton says, love is more about the skill of connection and maintaining that connection, than it is about the warm feeling of having found someone whose interest in us matches ours in them.

I believe it’s important that we are able to look beyond the search for ‘perfection’ and see what might well be right in front of us.

Attraction

TOP Io things that CAN MAKE SPARKS FLY

NUMBER ONE : PHYSICAL CONNECTION Most people say they know if they’re attracted to someone in the first 90 seconds after meeting, based on the other person’s physical appearance and whether it fits with their ‘type’. Unfortunately this primal sexual attraction can often be misleading and that person you found ‘incredibly hot’ may actually be a terrible match. NUMBER TWO : SENSES Who we’re attracted to depends not just on how another person looks, but the multi-sensory process — how they smell, how their mouth tastes, their skin feels, and so on. NUMBER THREE : SIMILARITY We are often drawn to others who share common interests and values. NUMBER FOUR : DISTANCE Physical proximity can be arousing, but then so can distance and the anticipation of seeing them again. NUMBER FIVE : FAMILIARITY Yes it might sound a bit weird, but we often unconsciously look for partners who are familiar to us, or who might resemble our parents.

NUMBER EIGHT : MYSTERIOUSNESS We love a bit of mystery in a person; intrigue and sometimes even a bit of weirdness can attract two people. NUMBER NINE : HAPPINESS A recent dating app survey showed that 100% of participants thought that a ‘happy and positive person’ was automatically more attractive than unhappy or negative people. NUMBER TEN : THAT X-FACTOR You can’t put your finger on it but you absolutely know it’s there: that special something that attracts you to the other person.

WHEN LOOKING FOR LOVE Have your eyes and heart open. More often than not what you’re looking for is right in front of you. The truth is the people around us are just as interesting, fun and sexy as that perfect person that’s in your head. It really does help to make a conscious effort to connect emotionally with other people by communicating on a deeper level and listening with genuine interest. This creates an opportunity for sparks to fly and then who knows what. Taking a social and emotional risk on broadening your framework of acquaintance and connection may make a difference in your life.

NUMBER SIX : MIRROR MIRROR You might have noticed that some partners looks similar to each other. Studies have shown that we are often attracted to other people who look like us!

Your willingness to embrace the adventure of interacting differently takes you outside your comfort zone, and from an emotional and psychotherapeutic perspective, that’s a very strong positive and an excellent reason to dance the dance of attraction and connection a little bit differently.

NUMBER SEVEN : CRITERIA We all have that list in our heads and when we come across someone who ticks all those boxes we can’t help but feel attracted.

WINE FOOD

“I COOK WITH WINE. SOMETIMES I EVEN ADD IT TO THE FOOD.” W.C. FIELDS

LIKE ALL GOOD RELATIONSHIPS, IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET THE CHEMISTRY JUST RIGHT. IT’S THE SAME FOR WHAT’S ON YOUR TABLE. THE RIGHT WINE WITH YOUR MEAL WILL MAKE GOOD FOOD, EXCEPTIONAL. Opinion certainly waivers on clear rights and wrongs when it comes to food and wine matching, but certain flavours will bring out the best in each other. Our top 10 wine and food matches will help you make the most of your next meal.

38

FOOD&WINE

DRY RIESLINGS

REDS

The touch of sweetness and fresh acid zing that lingers on your pallet with many Dry Rieslings, will not only go perfectly with hot Indian curries and spicy Asian dishes, but will also help tame their heat.

It’s not hard to guess that Italian pasta and earthy recipes, rich with root vegetables and mushrooms, work great with light bodied reds like Pinot Noir — which is without a doubt, the most romanticised red wine in the world.

There are some excellent Australian Rieslings you should try like Jacob’s Creek, Frankland Estate or Grosset Polish Hill.

These wines are perfect for robust meals, bringing out their deep savoury depth.

3

SPARKLING ROSÉ

CHARDONNAY

Rosé sparkling wines are light but have the depth of flavour and richness that’s perfect for a BBQ or with a wide range of courses like seafood, salads, light pastas and vegetarian risottos. They are also the perfect accompaniment for canapés.

Chardonnays are really very diverse when it comes to food pairing. They are delicious with delicate foods like raw and lightly cooked seafood, pâtés, chicken, vegetable terrines, plus they also go well with pasta, risotto and vegetables.

4

CHAMPAGNE AND DRY SPARKLING WINES

5

7

9

If it’s sour or salty it’s going to work with Champagne — the truth is sparkling wine comes alive with food. Most dry sparkling wines have a touch of sweetness, that makes them extra refreshing when served with sour or salty foods. They also work well with fish and are great with canapés too.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

6

Also perfect for that Aussie BBQ — Cabernet Sauvignon blends are terrific with snags, steaks or chops. The firm tannins in these wines refresh the palate after each bite. For the vegetarians out there, Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with potatoes, winter squash, legumes, risotto and goats cheese.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

DRY ROSÉ

This wine works well with vegetarian dishes and foods like burgers, pesto, lemon, coriander, feta and scallops with tangy salads. Sauvignon Blanc is especially good if your menu includes a fabulously tart dressing or sauce.

It’s all about cheese with a dry rosé. It has the acidity of white wine and the fruity character of red. Try serving with a fancy toasted cheese sandwich, Fondue, deep fried Camembert with a mango coolie, cheese and crackers or canapés.

8

PINOT GRIGIO

MOSCATO

Pinot Grigio is one the most abundantly consumed white wines in the world — it has a light, dry, moderately acidic and crisp body with notes of tree, citrus and tropical fruit. If you like seafood, chicken or cheese you should always have a delicate Pinot Grigio in your cupboard.

Sweet and fruity. Perfect for cocktail canapés. They also work well with vegetables. A sweet glass of dessert Moscato or Moscato d’Asti can be a great finish to your meal on its own, but if you want to serve something sweet, most desserts and especially fruit work well.

10

If you have any questions about wine and food pairing, The Canberra Wine House at The Dickson Tradies have a professional sommelier, Brysson Leeson — she can help you pick the perfect bottle of wine for your next dinner party or get together. They also offer free wine tasting and boast a fabulous range of Canberra regional wines and local food. We urge everyone to drink responsibly and if you think you have a problem with drinking or would like more info about drinking wisely visit drinkwise.org.au

YOUR HOROSCOPE APRIL & MAY 2017 It may be important to remember that decisions and actions made from an open heart will lead to creation, and creation is love, and no matter what your beliefs, love is the way of the Universe. The Universe is always there to assist us on our life journey, but it will never carry us. We must all be willing to take positive steps in our lives and always take responsibilty for what we create.

Aquarius

January 21 – February 18 Finances will be a focus for you over April and May. You have to decide if you ‘really’ need more clothes or those other unnecessary items. It’s time to save for a rainy day Aquarius. Tip: The Autumn months will see favourable forecasts for love and sex, so it’s time to socialise.

Taurus

April 21 – May 21 Work and studies will be in the spotlight during April and new opportunities may present themselves, offering you more freedom and choice. You’ll be feeling positive about your life and others will notice. Tip: Beware, disturbances may be in the air when it comes to relationships.

Leo

July 23 – August 23 Your social skills will be necessary during April as your social life may be in conflict with your love life. Professionally April will be a fabulous month. Tip: It will be important over the next couple of months to relax about life and put some extra effort into your fitness and diet.

Scorpio

October 24 – November 22 During April you might find yourself feeling emotional and more sensitive than usual. Focus on interpersonal relationships. Tip: Unfortunately things are not favourable for finances, so you’ll need to work that extra bit harder and watch your spending during April.

Pisces

February 19 – March 20 You may get some great news in early April, which is going to be awesome. Exercise will be important over Autumn so get that sorted before it’s too late. Tip: Singles looking for partners, your chances are excellent if you have a positive attitude and an open heart.

Gemini

May 22 – June 21 The next few months could prove to be the richest and most colourful for the whole year. Family matters and close relationships will be at the forefront of your life during April and May. Tip: Look out for a romantic opportunity that will be quite vivid and exciting during April.

Virgo

August 24 – September 23 Your sexual prowess can be greatly improved over the Autumn months by cleansing your body of impurities, exercise and eating well. Tip: Nothing will be quite as clear-cut as it seems so restrain the urge to criticise before you have all the information.

Sagittarius

November 23 – December 22 You may find that you’ll be misplacing all sorts of things over the next couple of months. Do your best to roll with it. Adventure and excitement is what you need during the Autumn months. Tip: Last minute solutions can sometimes be better than well-thought out ones.

Aries

March 21 – April 20 April and early May may well be a very hectic time for you, however the months that follow are super favourable for commencing exciting new ventures. Tip: It’s time to discard all those old and no longer useful emotional crutches — they are just holding you back Aries.

Cancer

June 22 – July 22 The Solar eclipse will possibly impact your career or studies as well as the organisation where you spend most of your time. Tip: More effort will be required for financial progress over April, but you’ll get through it with a good attitude and by working smart.

Libra

September 24 – October 23 Love and sex will be more passionate and the trend will continue if you keep things fresh, creative and exciting. Be ready for some big strides in your relationships! Tip: Use your excellent diplomatic skills to diffuse a tricky situation that may arise during April.

Capricorn

December 23 – January 20 Whether you’re single or in a steady relationship, romance and sex are in the works. Beware of a few work or study issues that may come up during April or May. Tip: Take time out and make plans for a weekend away or dinner with someone special in your life, and smile.

EMAIL DEAR ROSE WITH YOUR PROBLEM

By Rose Pappalardo

Dear Rose, I went to Mardi Gras for the first time this year. A woman gave me a flyer telling me I should repent my sins if I wanted to save my soul, which shocked me and made me feel regretful about going and about my sexuality. I’m not sure what to do about it. Pete

Dear Rose, This may sound like a very strange question, but is it normal to still have feelings for someone that doesn’t know or realise that you even exist? MA

Dear Pete, Mardi Gras is a rite of passage for all LGBTIQ folks — it’s the day we really get to celebrate diversity and being us. I am so sorry you had this experience on your first Mardi Gras, but as we so often have to, you need to rise above it, shake it off and don’t let anyone spoil your parade — literally! Don’t ever doubt who you are, it was a silly pamphlet full of nonsense. It really is best to ignore this type of unthoughtful behaviour.

Dear MA, Yep, it’s absolutely normal to have feelings for someone who doesn’t know you exist.

Dear Rose, My girlfriend and I have been together for 6 months. Recently we were talking and she told me that she is bisexual and asked if it would be ok if we invited a guy into our bed sometimes. It was totally unexpected. I’ve always considered myself 100% lesbian but I’m open to try this, but I’m worried because, what if I can’t pull it off when it actually happens and I disappoint her? Leana

You are not alone in this quandary. Everyone has had a crush or ten on someone they don’t know in their lifetime. What is interesting though, is how you deal with it once you realise you have a crush on someone. Some people feel compelled to profess their feelings to the object of their desire. Some choose the path of unrequited love, and are content to sit on the sidelines and admire from afar. What I do know is that people come into our lives at different times and for different reasons. They leave an imprint of themselves on us, sometimes unconsciously, sometimes purposely. How we act on this can be the difference between the love of your life or just a romantic fantasy. Remember life is short and sometimes we need to take a chance and grab the brass ring.

Dear Leana, It’s good to explore new sexual experiences, however it’s going to be important to keep the lines of communications open with your partner, otherwise things may go very wrong. There will be lots to discuss before you invite someone else into your bed — guy or girl. Topics like safe sex, sexual and emotional boundaries, frequency and the nitty-gritty stuff like what happens when someone leaves the room or if it’s just not working, and how will you maintain mutual respect between all the parties involved, during and after. As fun as they can be, threesomes have very complex dynamics, even for the most confident among us. You need to be sure that you are totally comfortable before you begin and nothing is left un-said, because you can’t undo the experience afterwards.

Quote of the Month: George Michael George Michael had a turbulent coming out. I think the journey can be quite difficult for people under the spot light. This was highlighted when he commented: “For some strange reason, my gay life didn’t get easier when I came out. Quite the opposite happened, really.” George Michael 1963 – 2016
