AS THE PRIDE SEASON AND CHRISTMAS HURTLE TOWARDS US, I’M FILLED WITH BOTH EXCITEMENT AND ANXIETY.
I’m sure I am not the only one; life feels super hectic at the moment. Unfortunately for us humans, both these feelings flood our bodies with pretty much the same chemicals, so sometimes it’s hard to know if you should run, dance or possibly do both. Either way, my body is super ready to dodge any hungry lions at the moment.
The truth is that our bodies can’t actually tell the difference between anxiety and excitement. Meaning our nervous system mobilises us to respond either way, whether we’re dealing with something truly perilous like a charging beast, negative stories manifesting in our heads or the prospect of something fun, exciting or new. Hormonally it’s all the same.
It’s a common feeling around this time of year, so I thought I’d start this issue off as I often do by writing another editorial reminder to myself, with the hope it might help others as well. Sharing is good, right?
Although both pride and Christmas are meant to be a joyful time, life is filled with ups and downs, so this isn’t how it always goes. Christmas can be super busy and stressful; and pride, though a celebration of who we are, can bring on anxiety for some. Being an authentic you out in the world is not always easy. I’ve always been an easily excited guy (just ask my partner Christopher) and, in recent years, despite my spiritual endeavours, have struggled with anxiety too. There are so many techniques we’re told to do to help us survive difficult moments; but let’s face it, knowing and doing are two entirely different things. Apparently, failing is par for the course.
I’m learning it’s ok to fail and be fragile. You don’t have to be tough or get through it. The truth is “not coping” can actually be a path to healing. So if you feel a bit like me, be kind to yourself, be ok with failing, and the big one... breathe and breathe deep.
It’s hard not to be excited with summer coming (despite the wet spring); the next few months are literally jam-packed with fun and exciting things to do. In breaking news, you’ll have to wait until 4 February for Fresh Out in Glebe Park, as rain and safety concerns have meant the event has been postponed until early 2023. But don’t worry, November is still filled with great Canberra pride events like Bushdance, Drag Spectacular, the Big Gay Breakfast and so much more — you’ll find a special FUSE festival guide starting on p7.
In Sydney, Mardi Gras and WorldPride will unite to present a global LGBTIQ+ festival running from 17 February to 5 March 2023, with the theme ’GATHER, DREAM, AMPLIFY’. There will be parties, concerts, theatre, art installations, exhibitions, sports — everything you can imagine with a rainbow flavour!
Most exciting, of course, is that our world-renowned pride parade will be returning to Oxford Street in celebration of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras’ 45th anniversary on Saturday 25 February 2023. There are lots of big days and glorious nights ahead of us.
Keep an eye on the FUSE website and our socials as we keep you up to date with everything happening here in Canberra and at Sydney WorldPride. Have a great break, and a big thank you to all our readers, contributors, partners and advertisers who’ve made FUSE possible for the past 13+ years. Stay safe and be kind, Alexander.

DID YOU KNOW?
The fictional land of Wakanda’s major resource is Vibranium which is sold for $10,000 per gram. Wakanda’s sacred mound is estimated to have 10,000 tons of the material worth $100 trillion!
BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER
The world was shocked and saddened by the 2021 death of Chadwick Boseman, an actor who was just coming into his own, and public consciousness, thanks in large part to 2018’s Black Panther. Just how director Ryan Coogler and his cast (Angela Bassett, Lupita N’yongo, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke) recover from that loss remains to be seen. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom. This sequel to the Oscar-winning and epic film promises to be just as big and bold as its predecessor.
SHE SAID
Much like 2015 Oscar-winner Spotlight, She Said is about the nitty gritty of investigative journalism in the service of justice. Where Spotlight dealt with paedophilia in the Catholic Church, She Said is about sexual abuse in Hollywood. Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan play New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor whose investigations eventually led to the fall of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein; Maria Schrader’s film focusing on the duo’s efforts to get Weinstein’s victims to go on the record.
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER
It’s been a long time, but now thirteen years after the 3D juggernaut Avatar blitzed the international box office (US$2.8B) and the Oscars (3 wins from 9 nominations, including Best Picture), director James Cameron aims to do it again with this long-awaited sequel, the first of three. Pandora’s indigenous people, the Na’vi, continue their battle for existence against the invading humans, with the action centred this time in the ocean rather than the forests. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana return in what, at the very least, promises to be a visually stunning film.
BROS
You may have heard that Bros, the “first” gay romcom by a studio, failed to set the US box office alight. And you’ve no doubt heard arguments from various people, including star and writer Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street; Difficult People), as to why that was. Too gay for straight audiences? Too straight for gay audiences? Too self-important for either? We’d suggest you find out for yourself as this film is definitely a bit of light fun, and we probably all need that right now. Director Nick Stoller’s cheeky film, which also stars Luke Macfarlane, certainly looks smart, funny and sexy.

WORLDPRIDE
RAINBOW CITY
BY NOW, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT IN FEBRUARY NEXT YEAR SYDNEY MARDI GRAS AND SYDNEY WORLDPRIDE WILL UNITE TO PRESENT A TRULY GLOBAL LGBTIQ+ PRIDE FESTIVAL — THE VERY FIRST IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.
Running from 17 February to 5 March 2023, the theme for the festival ‘GATHER, DREAM, AMPLIFY’ was developed by WorldPride in partnership with our extraordinary First Nations and LGBTIQ+ communities.
As part of the festival, greater Sydney will be transformed into a living rainbow art city, with organisations across Sydney, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, The Domain Trust and the Scenic Skyway in Katoomba, installing giant free public artworks to show our pride as we welcome queer folk from all over the world to celebrate with us.
Art installations include a 50-metre-long abstract floral rainbow wall made up of over 18,000 colourful plants at The Calyx inside the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, which is one of the largest living green walls in the southern hemisphere.
The rainbow wall will form part of the Garden’s new ‘Love Your Nature’ horticultural exhibition, which fittingly celebrates the diverse world of plant life with a kaleidoscope of colour, form and passion.
The City of Sydney will also feature its own pride art installations all over the city, including light shows, planter boxes and a massive floral wall, which will be created using hundreds of plants in the colours of the rainbow flag.
Randwick Council has announced that it will update its famous 27-metre long rainbow walkway at Coogee Beach to add the colours of the Progress Flag to include additional stripes representing people of colour and the transgender community.
In the iconic Blue Mountains, Katoomba’s famous Scenic Skyway will be transformed into a giant pride flag, which will be a dramatic vision set against our amazing world heritage landscapes, the Three Sisters and the beautiful Jamison Valley.
Sydney WorldPride aims to have over 45 rainbow inspired public artworks to celebrate 45 years of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Public space holders and community members have also been encouraged to create their own artworks, from flowers and lights to water and sculpture, based on any interpretation of the rainbow.
A Rainbow City map will be published in early February to allow locals and visitors alike to travel the city and view the glorious kaleidoscope of rainbow artwork.
Over the next few months, keep your eye out on the FUSE website and our socials for WorldPride news and event updates. Summer is coming, and after over two years of being locked away, celebrating pride will be more amazing than ever.
The full WorldPride festival program with over 300 events across WorldPride Official, WorldPride Arts, WorldPride Sports and Pride Amplified is available at sydneyworldpride.com

DID YOU KNOW?
Connections Nightclub was the first well-known LGBTIQ nightclub in Australia. It opened in Perth in 1975, 11 years before being gay was decriminalised. It’s still thriving today.
SYDNEY NIGHTLIFE’S FABULOUS REBIRTH AHEAD OF WORLD PRIDE
After being decimated by almost a decade of lockout laws and COVID shutdowns, the Sydney nightlife scene is beginning to burst to life again. A number of new bars and clubs are popping up around the central gay scenes of Oxford Street and Kings Cross in the lead up to World Pride next year. Former Potts Point staple World Bar relaunched in August as the Kings Cross Pavilion, offering a 900-person capacity, sports bar, dance club and top-floor cocktail bar. Oxford Street gay superclub Arq, which has been closed since the first COVID wave in early 2020, is set to reopen in October. Regarding World Pride next year, owner Shadd Danesi said, “I believe Sydney really needs more entertainment venues of good quality”. Another queer-focused club, Heaven, has opened where the famous Capriccio’s began in 1969 — and so has Noir, located directly below. The former Brighton Hotel, also on Oxford Street, has been freshly refurbished and reborn as The Riley. Past Taylor Square, the 3-level Meraki Arts Bar is set to launch later this year, aiming to combine arts and performance with high quality food and beverages and tap into the creative professional market.
TEXAS JUDGE SETS DANGEROUS PREP PRECEDENT
In the United States, Texas federal judge Reed O’Connor has set a dangerous precedent after ruling that the inclusion of HIV treatments under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, commonly called “Obamacare”) is a violation of religious freedoms. Companies Braidwood Management and Kelley Orthodontics brought the case to the US District Court, arguing that the inclusion of PrEP under ACA forces religious companies to finance and endorse homosexual behaviour. The ruling means that neither company is required to cover PrEP costs for its employees, and could trigger a chain reaction for medical treatment across the US. Ivy Hill, community health program director for the Campaign of Southern Equality, responded, “This ruling is about imposing extreme religious beliefs — not, as it purports, about protecting religious freedom… Far-right extremist judges are attacking privacy and access to health care”.
QUEENSLAND PUSH TO PROTECT SCHOOLS FROM DISCRIMINATION
The Queensland Human Rights Commission has proposed an overhaul of the state’s outdated anti-discrimination laws to protect, in particular, LGBTIQ+ staff and students at religious schools. The push comes after earlier this year Brisbane’s Citipointe Christian College faced backlash for issuing anti-queer student enrolment and employee contracts, which were later revoked. Queensland Attorney General Shannon Fentiman proposed 122 recommendations made by QHRC to Parliament, focusing on a more proactive approach to preventing discrimination and sexual harassment. Fentiman stated, “This report recommends reforms that will mean LGBTIQ+ students and staff feel safe in religious schools, while still protecting religious freedoms. Queer advocacy groups have welcomed the report, and called on the government to implement the changes. At present, Queensland teachers at some schools must hide their sexuality or gender identity in order to keep their jobs.
SHOCK-JOCK SANDILANDS
AT IT AGAIN
Notorious radio presenter Kyle Sandilands has once again come under fire, this time for spouting homophobic remarks about the current monkeypox outbreak. Listeners tuning into the popular ‘Kyle and Jackie-O Show’ on KIIS FM were left stunned after Sandilands ranted about “the big gay disease” and wanting to keep gays away from his newborn son. After a queer listener called in, Sandilands questioned if the man had seen the “dirty scabs that everyone gets” before expressing his concern of catching it from promiscuous gay colleagues. A spokesperson for the leading LGBTIQ+ health body Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations responded that, “Comments such as this are not just hurtful, they are also deeply unhelpful” by inflaming stigma and deterring people from visiting health clinics. Sandilands has long purported to be an ally of marginalised groups, particularly the queer community, and was even on a float at Mardi Gras in 2018.

According to activists, the ongoing war in Ukraine with Russia has united the nation and inspired Ukrainians to look past prejudices against the LGBTIQ+ community, with polls showing that public opposition to same-sex civil unions has dropped from 69% in 2016 to 41.9% in 2022.
MALTA LEADING THE EUROPEAN CHARGE TOWARDS QUEER EQUALITY
Malta continues to pave the way forward for European LGBTIQ+ rights, with Labour Prime Minister Robert Abela announcing free gender-affirming surgery for trans citizens. Abela, who announced the news at Malta’s Pride March in Valletta, expressed an ongoing desire to drive progress forward, stating “My presence yesterday, as well as that of ministers and MPs, symbolises the messages that while we have done a lot, more is yet to come”. The government has also recently fulfilled an election promise by lifting restrictions on gay and bisexual men donating blood. In 2019, the Mediterranean island nation also ranked number one in Rainbow Europe’s best European holiday destination for LGBTIQ+ travellers.
NSW SNIFFER DOGS TO STAY
BROKEN HILL WELCOMES FIRST LGBTIQ POLICE CONFERENCE
Some of NSW’s highest-ranking police officers have met in Broken Hill for an inaugural gay and lesbian police conference. Barrier Police District Superintendent Darren Brand masterminded the event in order to promote inclusivity and diversity in policing and the wider community, saying, “It doesn’t matter what community you’re a part of… your police are there to support you and treat you with respect”.
Sergeant Nathan Towney, a Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officer and Wiradjuri man, attended the event and stated, “I can definitely see a big shift with acceptance and moving forward”. Also present was Acting Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke who said, “It’s a great initiative and it coincides with the Broken Heel Festival”.
In a long-awaited response to the 2020 ice inquiry, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has re-affirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy to drug use. Perrottet announced that despite recommendations, the NSW government will not be: decriminalising low-level personal drug use; allowing pill testing sites at music festivals; or stopping the use of police sniffer dogs. He did, however, support the idea of a pre-court diversion program whereby small-time offenders can be given an infringement notice rather than having to go straight to court, at the discretion of police. This scheme now depends on support from the police commissioner and the chief health officer, who have until June 30 next year to give their advice. Drug reform advocate and executive director of Harm Reduction Australia, Annie Madden, expressed her disappointment to the news, “Other governments are looking into more progressive responses… but in the country’s largest state they’ve ignored the evidence”.
VIRGIN ATLANTIC SCRAPS GENDERED UNIFORMS
In a move sure to stir up the industry standard, airline Virgin Atlantic has scrapped rules on gendered staff uniforms to encourage staff to freely express their identity. The Richard Branson owned company will also offer the option of gender pronoun badges for staff and passengers, and changed its online booking system to offer a gender-neutral title for customers. Chief Commercial Officer Juha Jarvinen said, “It’s so important we enable our people to embrace their individuality”. The launch of the campaign saw the airline team up with RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and non-binary social media star Tyreece Nye showcasing the new-look uniforms.

DANI LAIDLEY STUNS AT AFL’S NIGHT OF NIGHTS
Former AFL player and coach Dani Laidley has showcased her stunning transformation on the red carpet at this year’s Brownlow Medal Ceremony. Laidley, who announced her transition in November of 2020, wowed attendees as she walked the red carpet in a gorgeous white off-the-shoulder Marquise Atelier gown alongside her partner Donna Leckie. Laidley said, “It’s just been phenomenal and I just said when we came down the stairs that, you know, we are so grateful and overwhelmed”. Laidley played for the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne between 1987 and 1997, being part of the latter’s 1996 premiership team before coaching the club from 2003 to 2009. More recently, the 55-year-old released an autobiography titled Don’t Look Away: A Memoir of Identity and Acceptance, which dives into her life and struggles to accept her gender identity, and has been open about battling with suicide attempts, body dysmorphia and drug addiction.
DID YOU KNOW?
THE SIMPSONS BOSS OPEN TO QUEER LISA
Al Jean, showrunner of the much beloved long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons, has stated that Lisa being queer is certainly a “possibility”. Fan speculation reached a frenzy after flash-forwards in season 23 episode ‘Holidays of Future Passed’ briefly depicted an adult Lisa holding hands with two women. Later, in season 29 episode ‘Mr Lisa’s Opus’, a future Lisa is depicted attending Harvard University and ends up holding hands with a girl that she hints may be “more than a friend”. Jean commented publicly stating, “She is open and, you know, somebody who loves everything. Why not?”. Actor Yeardley Smith who has voiced Lisa for over 20 years, weighed in on the issue stating, “I’m totally open to the possibilities of her exploring other ways of life… but she’s eight, people”. Lisa’s aunt Patty Bouvier and Mr Burns’ right-hand-man Waylon Smithers have both previously come out on the show.
QUEEN ELIZABETH A QUEER ALLY ACCORDING TO FORMER LORD MAYOR
Carl Austin-Behan, Manchester’s first out gay Lord Mayor (and Mr Gay UK 2001), has stated that the late great monarch “cared about our LGBTIQ+ community”. Austin-Behan served as Lord Mayor of Manchester from 2016 to 2017 and is currently the LGBT advisor to the Lord Mayor of Greater Manchester. He had the opportunity to meet the Queen in July 2021 when she visited Manchester Cathedral for the 600th anniversary of the Collegiate Church. He said, “She was very knowledgeable as well about Manchester’s LGBTIQ+ community”, having a keen interest in the work of queer charities in Manchester, particularly that of the queer veterans organisation Fighting With Pride. Queen Elizabeth II passed away on the 8th of September aged 96, having been the longest reigning monarch in British history.

A YouGov poll revealed that a staggering 2 in 5 Americans fear (or hope) that a second civil war could happen in the next 10 years. Republicans were more likely than Democrats to expect war.
QUEENSLAND POLICE TO ISSUE APOLOGY TO QUEER COMMUNITY
The Queensland Police Service has committed to issue a landmark apology to the queer community for past enforcement of discriminatory laws. The decision comes after, for the second year in a row, officers participating in the Brisbane Pride Festival march and rally were asked not to do so in uniform. The committee of Brisbane Pride Inc. made the decision in August last year, based on discussions with members of the community. In a statement, the organisation said, “Both organisations agree that a formal apology by the police is one of the steps that is needed to move forward for a positive future together”. Police Commissioner Katarina Caroll said that the apology, to be issued in 2023, would acknowledge the harmful past actions of the police force “enforcing the laws of the time that criminalised the expression of their sexuality”.
SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT TAKING STEPS TOWARDS EQUALITY
Sri Lankan president Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated his government will not oppose a private member’s bill decriminalising homosexuality when it is presented to Parliament. At present, same-sex relationships are illegal in the South Asian island nation, and there are other discriminatory laws targeting trans people and sex workers.
This bill, by MP Premnath Dollawatte, seeks to legalise same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults by amending sections 365 and 365A of the penal code. To pass, it will require votes of support from individual members of parliament, with President Wickremesinghe saying, “It’s a matter of their private conscience”. The news comes after the government has been accused of forcing intrusive ‘virginity’ tests on its LGBTIQ+ citizens to prove sexual activity. Since 2017 at least 7 people have been violated, according to a Human Rights Watch Report.
Serbian police have had to counter violent homophobic protesters at this year’s EuroPride march in Belgrade. The lead-up to the event saw numerous setbacks, including initially being called off by Serbia’s government and, later, the police announcing their own ban on the parade’s route due to “security concerns.” On the 17th of September, just hours before the march, the government gave organisers the green light. Whilst the parade was a success with thousands of attendees marching proudly, police clashed with far-right protest groups. 64 anti-LGBTIQ+ protesters were arrested while 10 police officers were treated for injuries. EuroPride president Kristine Garina remarked that the event would “go down in history as a turning point for LGBTI+ equality in Serbia and the wider Western Balkan region”, noting that while attendees marched peacefully, “far-right, nationalists and fundamentalist Christians” battled violently with police.
CUBA LEGALISES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE AFTER HISTORIC REFERENDUM
Same-sex marriage and adoption has been legalised in Cuba after the island nation voted on a referendum for a new family code. Preliminary results from the electoral commission showed that 74% of eligible voters participated in the referendum, with two-thirds voting in favour. As well as rights for LGBTIQ+ citizens, the new law improves protections for minorities including women, children and the elderly, and promotes the sharing of domestic duties between men and women. Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel, who led the campaign for the reforms, tweeted out, “Justice has been done”. Whilst homosexuality was decriminalised in Cuba in 1979, many queer Cubans have faced discrimination for decades since the Fidel Castro communist regime of the early 1960s.

PRONOUNS
YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD ABOUT GENDER PRONOUNS ALREADY; MANY OF US DON’T GIVE THEM A SECOND THOUGHT, BUT FOR OTHERS, THEY ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT AND VALIDATING.
Language is a significant part of how we understand and shape the world around us, and the words we choose matter. They can highlight assumptions we make about other people, their presentation, relationships, cultural background, abilities, age and of course gender.
For many people, gender pronouns help them navigate their way through the world and let others know where they are on their journey. Because of this, using correct pronouns is an important way of validating someone’s gender, being respectful and more inclusive with everyday language.
If you’re unsure how pronouns work, here is a simple run down. A pronoun is a word that refers to either the person talking (I), or being talked to (You), or someone/something that is being talked about (like She, It, Them and This). Pronouns like He, She and They specifically refer to the people you are talking about.
She and He are gendered pronouns. She is typically used by female-identifying people. Similarly, He is typically used by male-identifying people. In some cases, both of these are used by people who don’t identify as male or female. They, Them, and Their are common gender-neutral pronouns. These are pronouns that don’t imply ‘male’ or ‘female’. Gender-neutral pronouns are often used by gender-diverse and non-binary-identifying people.
There are also other gender-neutral pronouns that some people use, like Ze and Zir. They can take a bit of getting used to, but it’s important to use the right ones even if it feels a bit strange to you. If you’re not sure, politely ask.
We all have personal pronouns, whether it’s She, He, They, or something else. For example, it’s common for gender-diverse people to prefer They or Ze maybe. A female or male identifying person might prefer She or He pronouns, respectively. Pronouns are used every day; which ones do you use?
It’s important to note that you can’t always know what someone’s pronouns are just by looking at them, and assumptions can often be hurtful, but simply asking is the easiest way to find out.
There are lots of reasons why it’s important to use the pronouns that a person prefers. Put simply, though, it can really upset someone when you use the wrong ones. This can be especially true for transgender folk.
If someone happens to use pronouns different from what you might expect, this can be challenging for some people. It is important to note that the person has probably thought long and hard about which pronouns feel right for them. Sometimes you might need to restructure your use of language to accommodate this.
Sometimes people are misgendered. If you’ve not heard of it, its a term used to describe accidentally or intentionally using incorrect pronouns about or towards a person. It can happen by mistake, and that’s okay; but when it happens intentionally, it’s pretty crappy.
For many people, their pronouns are an essential part of who they are, and by using them, you’re doing your bit to make them feel validated and included. Using pronouns can be tricky and, for some people, challenging. Some can sound pretty strange at first, and changing the words we use in general conversation can be harder than expected. You might not pick it up instantly, but you’ll get the hang of it over time! If in doubt, just ask.

THE MOUSE HOUSE WITH LOCKED DOORS
Will Disney ever truly let us in?
AT THE MERE MENTION OF THE NAME ‘WALT DISNEY’ IT IS DIFFICULT NOT TO BE MENTALLY WHISKED AWAY TO A FAR-AWAY LAND; TO A PLACE OF CHILDHOOD INNOCENCE WHERE IMAGINATION FLOWS ENDLESSLY AND YOU CAN “WISH UPON A STAR”.
For most young people that have grown up in the English-speaking Western world, the stories crafted by Disney have, for decades, enchanted us. The princesses. The songs. The fabulous villains. They hold a special place in our hearts, from our earliest memories that extend well into adulthood and beyond. As we get older the magic may fade, but for queer audiences a question looms large: where are all the gays?
The Walt Disney Company, as it is known today, has come a long way since Mickey Mouse made his screen debut in 1928. Countless animated classics, a slew of theme parks worldwide and the acquisition of a monopoly of companies has made Disney today’s juggernaut of multimedia entertainment. In the last two decades alone they have bought Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars) and 20th Century Fox. Their online streaming platform Disney+, launched in 2019, now has more subscribers than Netflix.
Yet for all that Disney owns and produces, their inclusion of LGBTIQ+ characters and stories is, to put it bluntly, abysmal. As if the Fairy Godmother herself waved her magic wand and made us all disappear.
The company regularly makes headlines upon news of its supposed groundbreaking inclusivity. Disney’s “first gay moment”?
A blink-and-you-miss-it shot of Gaston’s sidekick LeFou dancing with another man in the 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast
How about the “first same-sex kiss in Star Wars”? Two basically un-named female resistance fighters share a celebratory smooch for a second in a background shot in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Or maybe “the MCU’s first gay character”? Just an unnamed grieving man (played no less by one of the film’s straight co-directors) who briefly mentions having been on a date with another man in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame I could go on and on…
These passing moments between secondary (and that’s putting it generously) characters feels like nothing more than breadcrumbs from the dinner table. Their inclusion reeks of queer-baiting, luring us — and our so-called “pink-dollars” — in with the promise of visibility. Conveniently, each one is so fleeting and unimportant to the story being told that they are regularly left on the cutting room floor when the movie is exported to more censorship-heavy markets such as China, Russia, Indonesia and the Middle East.
Credit where credit is due, very recently there have been hints at genuine attempts by Disney subsidiaries at inclusion. Chloe Zhao’s Eternals (2021) depicted the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay superhero with the character Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry), who is shown with his loving husband and son. This year’s Toy Story spinoff Lightyear featured the first same-sex kiss in a Pixar film between Buzz’s best friend Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her partner. While the scene had been cut initially, public scrutiny over Disney’s financial support of Florida’s “don’t say gay” law prompted the company to backtrack and keep the scene in.
But these are baby steps, and as we settle into the 2020s, they seem to be not nearly in line with the times. Of course, Disney is not the only creator of entertainment that seems to so often forget the existence of queer people. But they are one of the biggest, and certainly one of the most powerful brands on the planet… and they are rapidly buying up the rights to tell our stories.
For young queer people, seeing themselves reflected back on the screen is crucial — especially in this day and age where screen-time is skyrocketing. Will Disney change with the times? Will they risk their conservative, carefully curated “family friendly” image? Only time will tell. In any case, we can always find solace in the fact that Ursula from The Little Mermaid was inspired by drag icon Divine. I am okay with that. Ursula was a total bad-ass.

The Joy of Handmade
YOU CAN HELP STOP TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES FROM SLOWLY SLIDING INTO OBSCURITY
‘Kaleidoscope’ at Belconnen Arts in April and ‘Not the Only Clay in the Village’, currently running at the Canberra Potters’ Gallery in Watson — both filled with amazing work from local queer creators.
It’s reminded me just how many amazingly talented makers and artists Canberra has and, more significantly, how important it is to support them.
As an artist and potter myself, it’s probably no surprise I love handmade things. Whether it’s a new beanie for my cold head, a card for a friend or a funky lampshade for our bedroom. In my humble opinion, no factory can top something that’s been lovingly made by an artist.
With most things made overseas, I think the connection I make with handmade items and the people who make them is what’s most important to me.
We already know that buying Australian, and if possible local, is better for us and the environment — so with the lead-up to the silly season, I wanted to write down a few thoughts I had about why it’s also important to support local artisans and creators.
HANDMADE IS SUSTAINABLE AND LASTS LONGER
Once upon a time, when you bought something, it was well made and lasted, but not so much now. Mass production techniques have meant low wages, bulk buying, fast production, and often cheap materials. Lower production costs ensure that large companies make more profit with less regard for the actual items they are making.
In contrast, most handmade items are made slowly, with skill and usually quality materials, so they will last much longer. For many artists, the integrity of their process and the end product is incredibly important, resulting in creations that are more sustainable and considered.
YOU’RE SUPPORTING TRADITIONAL SKILLS
Many traditional crafts are in great danger of dying out. When we buy handmade, we are helping to ensure skills are kept alive and well supported. Each purchase we make allows a maker to develop their artistry further, re-invest in their craft, and carry on producing beautiful works of art.
BUYING HANDMADE CELEBRATES DIVERSITY
Handmade is a wonderful celebration of uniqueness, passion, diversity and culture. Everyday items, like a ceramic bowl, traditionally blown glass or handcrafted fashion, can be part of a personal journey that connects the maker to the buyer.
Sadly, most things we buy are mass-produced with little to no soul. Everything is standardised and looks the same — all tightly shrink-wrapped in plastic and ready to consume.
Handmade is about variety, people, creativity and connection. Each item is a unique display of talent and craftsmanship, and quite often, no piece will ever be the same (like each of us).
I believe there is a real and authentic beauty in the inherent diversity of handmade. If you want something truly distinctive and personal, handmade won’t let you down.

Placing fourth, Ellen won the hearts of a nation with her soaring voice and unshakable spirit, delivering several season-defining performances including soulful renditions of Sia’s “Chandelier”, Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold” and Pink’s “Perfect”.
In addition to The Voice, Ellen’s live performance career is impressive, including shows with Broadway composer Scott Alan, the Queensland Pops Orchestra, Oscar Theatre Company, the Commonwealth Games, the Goodwill Games and countless others.
We briefly chatted with Ellen about her passion for music and her upcoming gig at Fresh Out in Canberra.
WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING UP ON STAGE?
I’ve always felt like being on stage was like being home. There’s something chaotic about the energy as I walk on stage. It’s like waiting for the rollercoaster to begin, but once I’ve stepped foot on stage, I walk to my spot, and the music starts playing. It’s like something else takes over. I love it!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
My sound has evolved over the years. I love a lot of different genres, but I always am at home belting out a big ballad or a dance track. My latest stuff is definitely more pop/rock than it used to be.
WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE DIVA?
I don’t think you can go past Celine vocally or Gaga for her spunk. I do love Queen Bey too; her new album has been on repeat since it dropped. Or Lizzo for what she’s doing in terms of representation for so many communities. I’m obsessed with Miley, and her rock vibes and her covers are literal heaven!
THE VOICE PROPELLED YOU INTO THE SPOTLIGHT. HOW DID THAT CHANGE THINGS FOR YOU?
The Voice was an interesting time in my life and one that was an absolute rollercoaster.
I had some of my highest highs and lowest lows filming that show, and immediately after as well. I don’t think you’re ever really the same after an experience like that.
HOW MUCH IS YOUR SONGWRITING ABOUT YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES?
It’s a real mixed bag. Sometimes I write from personal experiences, and sometimes I create situations in my head and write about them. I’m often also inspired by a movie I’ve seen or a friend’s dating story.
When I was younger, I could only write about personal situations, but now I’m older I’ve learnt to romanticise more about my friends’ and families’ lives as well.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU ON THE FRESH OUT STAGE IN CANBERRA?
You can expect me to sing the house down! I’m bringing my OG Dancers — Ness and B — and we are so excited to kill it for you all! Plus, I’m also just about to drop my new single, so I cannot wait to sing that live!

The buzz around Ethan’s upcoming performance at Canberra’s Fresh Out has got us all pretty excited, so we thought we’d have a quick chat with this fresh faced up-and-coming banger.
WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SINGING?
It all started when I got my first keyboard when I was only four. After that, I sang in the church choir, was in the school band and a lot of theatre productions. Now I’m singing at heaps of gay festivals, so I’ve kinda been full circle! Haha!
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO DANCE TO?
I love dancing to RnB leaning dance music. Stuff like Kaytranada, Tinashe, Janet Jackson, SG Lewis, and then of course classic pop divas like Britney, GaGa, Beyonce and Rihanna. Dance music is one of my favourite genres, especially house and disco, which has obviously been super popular recently with its neo-revival in Top 40 music over the past few years.
WHERE DO YOUR IDEAS FOR SONGS COME FROM?
My ideas usually come from the music I’ve been listening to. Lyrically I’m inspired by my personal experiences with love, dating, and my journey as a young impressionable gay kid.
YOU SANG AT SYDNEY MARDI GRAS FAIR DAY THIS YEAR. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING IN FRONT OF SO MANY PEOPLE?
I love to perform, so it’s something I really enjoy. I put a lot of pressure on myself, which can be nerve-wracking. It’s fun, though. Music is my first love!
DO YOU EVER GET STAGE FRIGHT?
Absolutely! It took me only until recently to be confident enough to perform live. I’ve always been more of a private musician. But I’ve recently found a lot more confidence, so I’m keen to keep pursuing being up on stage.
IS PERFORMING LIVE IN FRONT OF QUEER AUDIENCES IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Oh yes, for sure. Queer audiences continue to support me. I think the LGBTIQ+ community are most definitely the tastemakers within all the creative arts. As a double minority, I want to represent and highlight the talent and work ethic of both POC and LGBTIQ+ musicians.
YOU’RE ABOUT TO PERFORM AT CANBERRA’S FRESH OUT; WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN YOU GET UP ON STAGE?
Lots of cool original music and some fun covers of popular gay bangers! I put a lot of work into the instrumentals, and the dancers coming with me are always great. Expect a lot of great energy and soulful vibes.
WHAT’S SOMETHING MOST MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I’m definitely transparent and like to show off, so I often don’t leave much to the imagination, haha! One thing (for sure) that I love more than music is food! LOL.
WHAT’S UP NEXT AFTER YOUR FRESH OUT GIG?
I have a couple of new releases coming out this spring before I drop my next exciting project I’ve been working on for over two years now. As a music producer, I also work with other artists, which keeps me busy. I’m hoping to enjoy a warm Aussie summer finally again and then bring in the new year with more new tunes and hopefully a performance at WorldPride in Sydney 2023 — watch this space!

Foster
What you may not know is that over 50,000 Aussie children are in need of a loving home. Many have been at risk of violence, neglect or abuse. Some parents may simply not have the capacity to provide the care and protection needed due to illness, financial stress, or an unexpected change in circumstances. This means the need for foster carers continues to be critical.
To be a foster carer you must be aged over 21, have a spare bedroom and be able to provide a safe home environment. There are a few common myths about foster care, so we thought we would reach out to ACT Together to clear some of those up.
BUSTING MYTHS
EVERY CHILD IN NEED OF FOSTER CARE HAS PROBLEMS
They don’t. They are children who need a safe home and the protection of stable adults who care. Some children in care can have complex needs because of past trauma, but in reality, they are no less or more naughty than other kids.
FOSTER CARE IS ONLY SHORT TERM It’s not always the case. Carers are needed for both short and long term foster care options.
I CAN’T FOSTER BECAUSE I’M PART OF THE LGBTIQ+ COMMUNITY OR I’M SINGLE
Not true! There are many same-sex couples and single people that foster. Single carers, older carers, carers of different ethnic backgrounds and religions, and carers with or without other children are all welcome to apply. Your sexuality, race, religion, age or parenting experience will not be what is considered. Whether you have a child’s best interest is the first priority.
“Becoming a foster carer is extremely rewarding and something that will enrich your lives. Family is everything, no matter what it looks like.”
Geoff and Mark, Canberra
FOSTERING IS EASY
Any parent will tell you it’s not always easy. Being a foster carer does require patience at times of uncertainty, and time management skills to juggle the needs of the children in your care. The important thing to note as there is plenty of support, and it will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do.
CHILDREN HAVE LITTLE TO NO CONTACT WITH THEIR BIRTH PARENTS OR RELATIVES
They will. You will play a crucial role in helping the child maintain a relationship with their parents and extended family. You need to be open and willing to assist in this process, but you’re not expected you to do this alone. This is a relationship that will develop over time.
IT’S PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS ADOPTION
It’s not. Best endeavours are made to return children to their families, but where that is not possible, finding a long-term placement is desirable so children do not have to move from one home to another.
I CAN’T FOSTER BECAUSE I WORK
Yes, you can. The fact is most people need to work to support their lives. In some cases, carers may be asked to have some time off to integrate the child into their home and start the attachment process, which is the foundation of a successful placement.
YOU NEED TO HAVE PLENTY OF MONEY
Incorrect. You do need to be financially stable. However you don’t have to own your own house, have a highly paid job or be a double-income family.
IT’S A DIFFICULT PROCESS TO BECOME A CARER
It isn’t, but it does take some time. It involves several steps to ensure you are ready to foster a child.

Peppa Pig has introduced a pair of lesbian polar bears, but Aussie kids’ TV has been leadingthe way in queer representation
PEPPA PIG’S FIRST SAME-SEX COUPLE, A PAIR OF LESBIAN POLAR BEARS, WERE RECENTLY INTRODUCED AFTER A PETITION TO INCLUDE A SAME-SEX FAMILY RECEIVED NEARLY 24,000 SIGNATURES.
Children’s television has often been a place to push the boundaries of diverse representations onscreen.
In particular, Australian children’s TV has been a global leader in screen diversity, including gender and queer representation.
Emmy-winning Australian series First Day (2020-22) tells the story of a transgender girl starting high school. Another Emmy-winner, Hardball (2019-21) includes gay dads for one of the lead characters.
Even recent updates to The Wiggles’ line-up has placed a greater emphasis on gender diversity, including adding a non-binary unicorn.
Children’s TV is often less risk averse than programming aimed at adults. The ABC is empowered to take risks with representations of gender and sexuality in children’s programming because of its publicly funded role. But such progressive portrayals can sometimes chafe with outdated expectations of kid’s television. Back in 2004, PlaySchool faced controversy for showing lesbian mothers.
As social acceptance has progressed, Australian children’s TV has been able to achieve more queer representations.
Talking to the Queering Australian Screens research project, television professionals often praised the genre for its openness to new ideas and representations and for bringing in new talent.
Tony Ayres, creator of Nowhere Boys (2013-18), observed those who commission children’s TV are “generally very open to diverse representation”.
This representation happens behind the scenes too, with Ayres describing how these shows often give new talent their first credit.
David Hannam, who has written for several kids’ TV shows including Dance Academy (2010-13), said children’s television “has led the way”.
Speaking of his time at the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, Hannam noted the foundation had an “almost charter responsibility” to show diversity on screen, “with great caution and responsibility”.
Julie Kalceff created First Day, which starred a young trans actor, Evie McDonald, as a trans girl starting high school.
It is not only TV producers who are eager to widen representation in children’s television. Audiences are also seeking out more inclusive content.
Just like Peppa Pig in the UK, there have been calls in Australia for more diversity in animated hit Bluey, with the show adding its first Auslan signing character in June.
In contrast to the controversy Play School received nearly 20 years ago for its inclusion of same-sex parents, a mother praised the show for “doing a fantastic job” of depicting diversity in relationships. Not everyone believes Australian television is doing enough. One survey respondent praised the way shows like Bluey reflect Australian culture, but said he would “love to see more LGBT representation […] It would be nice as a kid to know you’re valid.”
The streaming era has changed how families and children watch TV. This raises concerns about the future of Australian children’s content.
The recent removal of quotas for Australian networks to air a minimum number of hours of children’s television, alongside the absence of quotas on streaming services, has led to a reduction in the production of local kids’ TV.
From Play School to Bluey, children’s TV has reflected the richness of Australian cultural life. There is a risk that if Australian child audiences need to rely on international content, future generations will not see themselves on screen.
With the loss of local voices, Australian kids’ TV may also lose its ability to push boundaries of diversity and inclusion. Only time will tell. Stay tuned.

Australian Children’s Television Cultures’ 2021 survey found 90% of Australian parents believe diverse representation is an important element of children’s TV.

DID YOU KNOW?
Baseball icon and ‘A League of Their Own’ inspiration Maybelle Blair came out as gay at 95 years of age in June 2022. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was created in 1943 to keep baseball in the public eye and satisfy fans while male players attached to Major League Baseball were away at war.
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN PRIME VIDEO
From director Maya Newell (In My Blood It Runs) comes a documentary short that’s no less impactful for its brevity. We meet Georgie Stone, a trans activist and the first trans person to appear on Neighbours, on the day that she is to undergo gender affirmation surgery. Newell’s film is essentially a ‘life in the day of’ story, using home video footage of Georgie throughout various stages of her 18 years as flashbacks, detailing both her own personal struggles and the fight for trans-kids’ rights to access medical treatment in Australia. Important and heartfelt.
Penny Marshall’s 1992 film was already a gay favourite, so the idea of revisiting that world — women’s professional baseball during WWII America — in series form, but with an actual focus on the women’s love-lives and sexuality, must have seemed like a home run. And showrunners Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) and Will Graham have hit it out of the park. Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place) and Chanté Adams lead an impressive female ensemble that will steal your heart just as easily as the Rockford Peaches steal first base.
THE SWIMMER SBS ON DEMAND
At a desert aquatic training camp, five young men converge to compete for a coveted spot on the Israeli Olympic swim team. Erez (Omer Perelman Striks), a rising star on the elite swimming scene, has been raised with a singular goal his whole life — but his ambition is slowly derailed by his growing attraction to main rival Nevo (Asaf Jonas), and the head coach’s obvious disapproval. Erez must tread the waters between his lust for Nevo and his desire to win. Writer-director Adam Kalderon’s film explores the intensity of young male friendship, made even more potent by the pressure-cooker situation and raging hormones.
FLEE
STAN
Flee is the uniquely told animated story of one man’s journey to self-acceptance — across countries and oceans, cultures and family. Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen takes his documentary interview with friend Amin Nawabi, a refugee who flees Afghanistan for Denmark via Russia in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, and relays his tough but rewarding story through animation. Nominated for Best Documentary, Animated Feature and International Film at the 2021 Academy Awards (the first film to achieve that feat), Flee is one of the best films of the year.

LIFE-SAVING GAME CHANGER
FOR TRANS, NON-BINARY AND INTERSEX PEOPLE.
CANCER IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST DREADED WORDS YOU CAN HEAR FROM YOUR DOCTOR. IT’S A MAJOR CAUSE OF ILLNESS, AND OVER ONE MILLION PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA ARE EITHER LIVING WITH OR HAVE LIVED WITH CANCER.
Medical professionals tell us that understanding and avoiding the risk factors associated with cancer can help reduce the chance of getting the disease, and statistics show that screening programs increase the likelihood of detecting cancer early, enabling better outcomes from treatments.
Unfortunately, many people actively avoid cancer testing for one reason or another, putting their lives at risk. Some of us are lazy (I may be one of them, and I really should dig out that bowel cancer test stuffed away in the back of a cupboard), but others find the thought of testing extremely stressful, traumatic or even triggering.
This brings me to cervical cancer, which according to the World Health Organization is the fourth most common cancer globally, affecting all people with cervices. It’s also largely preventable.
Until recently, testing for transgender, non-binary and intersex people has been fraught with difficulties linked to the barriers individuals face in accessing culturally sensitive healthcare.
This has meant that transgender, non-binary and intersex people are less likely to be up to date with cervical screening, with many having never been screened, putting them at very high risk of unidentified infections.
Although Australia is leading the way as it pushes toward cervical cancer elimination, there’s little doubt that healthcare professionals need to be given more training to better support gender-diverse patients and feel comfortable asking the right questions.
There is, however, some good news for our gender-diverse community. In a significant step forward, the new Australian self-collection cervical screening initiative is a real game changer for trans, non-binary and intersex people.
This new approach to testing offers people more control and choice in a flexible approach to the screening process.
Hilary, one of the registered nurses at Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT, says that the new selfcollected cervical screening program makes testing much more accessible to gender-diverse patients, plus it’s quicker and, more importantly, very private.
The new test can be done by a doctor or nurse with a simple procedure using a speculum to examine your cervix, or — this is a game changer for many people — it can also be done as a self-collected test.
You will still need to see a doctor or nurse for the consultation, but you can do the test yourself in a private place, such as behind a screen or in the bathroom. The simple test is donxe using a cotton tip swab that you gently insert into the vagina, then return to your doctor or nurse, and that’s it done! It’s straightforward, fast and inclusive.
Cervical screening could save your life, so if you have a cervix, are aged between 25 and 74 years and have ever been sexually active, you should get tested and then once every five years.
You can have a cervical screening test with your regular GP or at a specialised healthcare provider as detailed on the ACT Health website.
Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT have specially trained and highly experienced nurses offering this service, so if you would like to contact them for more information or to make an appointment, follow the QR code on the right or call 02 6247 3077

STAR GAZER
Rose Pappalardo
Dear Rose, I’m in my early 20s and recently discovered I am bisexual. Do you think this merits coming out? Lisa
Dear Lisa,
Coming out is one of the most personal things that a person can do. It opens you up to a range of other people’s emotions, biases, presumptions and prejudices. To say it’s a tough gig is an understatement. If you ask some who’ve come out, they will tell you that it resulted in people they love rejecting them. For others, the experience was gentle and supportive. It could go either way. When contemplating coming out, you should prepare yourself that not everyone is going to greet the news with a celebration, and some people may hurt you.
Your sexuality is one of the parts of who you are, and denying who you are is an unhappy place to be in. Everyone has a different coming out story, but most agree that they wouldn’t change the feeling of being free and authentic for anything in the world. Closets are dark places; opening up the door lets the light in, and only good things come from welcoming the sun.
Dear Rose, My BF is particularly blessed. He wants our sex life to move to the next level, but every time things get happening, I chicken out, and I find myself disappointing him. What can I do? Ben
Dear Ben, Being well blessed comes with pros and cons, and if you are a newbie to this kind of relationship, you need to seek the appropriate advice regarding how to prepare yourself for that level of loving.
We are lucky here in Australia that every state has a queer place to seek advice from. In the ACT it is Meridian, in NSW it’s ACON, in QLD it’s Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, and so on. All of these services can give you the appropriate advice to be in a space to take your relationship to the next level.
In the meantime, talk to your BF and explain your hesitance and your fears regarding this, and ask for a bit of patience until you are comfortable and confident going to the next level.
ROSE WITH YOUR PROBLEM
Dear Rose, I recently moved in with my girlfriend, but after only a month, she has told me she prefers sleeping alone. What should I do? LJ
Dear LJ, Wow, that was a short honeymoon. This might be a red flag — you need to quickly establish why your girlfriend wants to sleep alone.
It could be that she is a light sleeper, maybe you toss and turn or snore, or perhaps she just wants to sleep alone. A conversation will give you both an opportunity to address the issue and devise a solution that works for both of you.
If there is no practical reason why, then you need to ask yourself, do I want to be in a long-term relationship with someone who doesn’t want to sleep in the same bed? It’s totally OK to bow out if this is a deal-breaker for you. Remember, there are two people in your relationship, and each person must have their needs met for the relationship to be healthy and thriving.
Need help or someone to talk to? Support is available for anyone in distress by phoning 24 hours QLife 1800 184 527, Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Meridian’s counselling services on 02 6257 2855. If you require relationship support or services call Relationships Australia on 1300 364 277
