CBR LGBTIQ COMMUNITY CONSORTIUM The Consortium is a partnership of four agencies brought together by the common goal of ensuring health, wellbeing, access, social inclusion and equity within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) community. The Consortium is a robust, inclusive partnership demonstrating the ability of four Canberra based organisations to work together and build a strong foundation that supports the LGBTIQ community into the future. The Consortium will encourage and build resilience by harnessing the strengths and resources of the LGBTIQ community, including families, friends, supporters and allies. Working with their established services, the Consortium will further develop a comprehensive suite of programs for the LGBTIQ community in the ACT. This will be achieved through the collaboration of existing partners and stakeholders, while identifying and cultivating greater involvement of the LGBTIQ community, and engaging mainstream agencies, government, other community groups and business communities to achieve these goals.

THE AIDS ACTION COUNCIL

A grass roots organisation actively working in the ACT and region to reduce HIV transmission and to minimise the personal and social impacts of HIV. At the Council we provide information and training to support the broader community in understanding HIV and its transmission. We run groups, support programs and workshops, and offer counselling to people living with HIV. We also deliver a range of information services, workshops and events for the broader LGBTIQ community, including Fair Day held during SpringOUT. We also manage health promotion campaigns and are very active on social media. See our advertisement on page 13 for more details. To achieve the Council’s vision of “Getting to Zero” in our community we have a robust volunteer program which includes training, ongoing support and a variety of volunteer opportunities enabling us to have a larger reach into the community. Volunteering is also a great way to meet other people and be involved with the Council. Counselling is provided for all members of the community, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, cultural background, religious belief or economic circumstances. Through counselling we provide assessments, support, advocacy and referral for a range of issues including: coming to terms with your sexuality, emotional and physical health, relationships, employment, education and accommodation. Within the counselling service we prioritise: • • • •

People living with or impacted by HIV People experiencing same sex domestic violence or homophobic violence Same sex relationship issues Sexual identity issues

Here at the Council we are also lucky to house the Sex Worker Outreach Program (SWAP). SWOP educates sex workers about safe sex practices, and lobbies for legal frameworks and the eradication of discrimination against sex workers. SWOP works to have easily accessible resources for culturally and linguistically diverse sex workers and also aims to change community perceptions of sex workers. You are welcome to drop in for a chat with the SWOP worker, calling ahead is a good idea to make sure they are available. We believe peer education is a bedrock to educating, supporting and engaging with the community.

12

We offer regular peer-led workshops and groups facilitated by our skilled volunteers. Peer education workshops cross a range of topics and provide an opportunity to discuss issues that matter in a semistructured, respectful and confidential environment. Recent workshops for gay, bisexual and same-sex attracted men have included: • Young men’s workshop (16–25) • Older men’s workshop (26+) • Relationships • Risk, pleasure and HIV • Meeting people online • Safe cruising • Newly diagnosed HIV positive For women who identify as lesbians, bisexual and same-sex attracted we have our Stepping Out workshops for women who are 16 years and older. Workshops offered for the whole community include financial literacy assistance, mindfulness meditation, resume writing and information sessions from Legal Aid. Please contact us to find out about the range of workshops and groups we’re currently running r keep an eye out on our social media feeds. There are many ways you can engage with the Council, and we welcome all members of the community to come and be involved. If we can help you through any of our services please get in contact with us, or if you feel like you have skills and energy to share through our volunteer opportunities then we would also love to hear from you. A GENDER AGENDA A Gender Agenda is a community-based organisation that works with, and advocates for, the sex and gender diverse community. This includes intersex people, transgender people as well as other gender variant or non-binary gender people. We are a unique community organisation actively engaged in increasing public awareness and understanding of sex and gender diversity issues as well as training, policy and law reform work. We also provide advocacy and social support services, information and resources along with a regular calendar of events. The AGA calendar provides a wide variety of events ranging from workshops, to community dinners and weekly drop-in times. AGA also runs a youth group for those under 25 that meets monthly. Through events AGA is able to offer a safe place for members of the sex and gender diverse community in Canberra and the surrounding region to meet and engage in peer support. Many of AGA’s events are run out of AGA House located in the Inner North of Canberra. A Gender Agenda adopts a collaborative approach to the work we do. We work on a strengths-based model and seek to find and build on points of commonality with other sectors and service providers. We value the importance of articulating our issues in ways that allow people to understand that the issues of gender identity and sex are fundamental issues that affect all of us. Through providing relevant training to organisations looking to better their engagement with the sex and gender diverse community, we promote a better understanding of our community. These training sessions are tailored to the needs of the requesting organisation to ensure that AGA is providing information that is relevant and useful. AGA provides training to government departments, community organisations and to the corporate sector.

16

We operate from a position of respecting and celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of human experiences. Anyone who is gender non-conforming, or who questions the binary categories and sex and/or gender, is part of our community. We also offer a number of resources that we regularly provide to other services, organisations and individuals. These resources include our popular ‘Gender Questioning Children’ brochure and our ‘Navigating Diversity’ booklet. These resources provide information about sex and gender diversity along with information about standards of care and human rights, and are used throughout Australia. You can get involved in A Gender Agenda in a lot of ways! By becoming a Member of AGA, you will be put on the mailing list to keep up to date with our everyday happenings as well as receive our regular newsletter. You can come by AGA House for a cuppa during our weekly drop-in times, or attend other events that we run. There are also volunteer opportunities with AGA. Our volunteers help out doing all sorts of things ranging from setting up for community dinners to running our library. Organisations are also able to show their support for AGA by becoming an organisational ally. For further information about AGA please email support@genderrights.org.au or call us 02 6162 1924. AGA is grateful for the support it receives from many organisations as well as the ACT Government that also provides some funding for our work.

NORTHSIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE

New partnerships mean new opportunities, new lessons and new successes. Northside are working collaboratively to create improvements to our services, strengthening existing links in the community and identifying new opportunities — for us, for our partners, and most importantly for you. Our team has been working with Canberrans for more than 35 years — while we’re continuing to provide our existing services, we’re identifying and acting on new opportunities and collaborations. In 2015 we formalised our partnership with the AIDS Action Council of the ACT, Sexual Health & Family Planning ACT and A Gender Agenda. Our partnership ensures our services and staff across each agency are informed, inclusive, aware and exceptional. In the future we hope to see our programs and services expand and develop further, but courage in practice will always underpin everything we do: a commitment to high quality, accessible services individually tailored to meet the needs of the community, and meet the needs of each individual who invites us into their life. What does this mean for you, as a community member? Northside knows you’re the expert in your own life, and we’re just here to offer support where you need it. And when you don’t need it, we’ll enjoy watching you succeed independently.

20

SEXUAL HEALTH & FAMILY PLANNING ACT

Working to improve sexual and reproductive health in the Canberra community. SHFPACT is Canberra’s sexual health promotion charity, working to improve sexual and reproductive health in the Canberra community for more than 40 years. Operating within a framework of human rights and social justice, SHFPACT has become a leader in integrated approaches to workforce training, health promotion and clinical service delivery. SHFPACT’s multidisciplinary team works to identify and overcome barriers to health for priority populations such as young people, people who are financially disadvantaged, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, plus the LGBTIQ community. It also provides clinical services, counselling, education, health promotion, professional development training, and information services in reproductive and sexual health, sexuality and relationships to the wider Canberra community, and works in partnership with many other community and government organisations to achieve these aims.

44

From supporting school-based sexuality and relationships education, through health information to assist all people to make informed decisions, to specialised reproductive and sexual health clinical services, SHFPACT has been at the forefront in advancing a rights-based, inclusive perspective on human sexuality and relationships, supporting individuals, couples and the community to address their needs in these important areas of health and wellbeing. We are proud of our role serving LGBTIQ Canberrans, from leading anti-homophobia training in schools, supporting the establishment of peer youth networks, and ensuring our training program content reflects the sexual and gender diversity of our community. SHFPACT is proud to be lead agency with its community partners for the Safe Schools Coalition ACT, working to create safe and inclusive school communities for same-sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, as well as staff and families. Safe Schools Coalition ACT is part of the national Safe Schools Coalition Australia program. We provide school communities with a suite of free resources and support to equip staff and students with skills, practical ideas and greater confidence to lead positive change. These include professional development training, information materials and posters, guidance documents, and the recently released teaching resource All Of Us.
