FUTURE CHAMPIONS

GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, The Future Champions Golf Digital Magazine launched in March 2021 and aims to become the leading junior golf publication worldwide. This is an exciting time in the game of golf as the sport is booming on all levels. In recent years, golf was really only growing in competitive golf but since the pandemic hit and people’s interests have changed, golf has become the game of choice for many. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids for a lifetime. We hope you enjoy our August issue. Should you have any feedback or interests for future issues, please let us know. Advertisers, please contact us for more information on how to be involved with our growing community. As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf. Callippe Preserve Golf Course By Dean Gregory – August 7, 2021 Approximately 30 miles northeast of the heart of Silicon Valley you will find nestled in the valley of the East Bay hills Callippe Preserve GC will once again be the host venue for the FCG National Tour NorCal for the fall season opener. This unique and memorable course was designed by Brian Costello, of JMP Golf Design Group, opened in November 2005. It features five sets of tees that play from 4788 – 6748 yards. “Callippe Preserve was designed to cater to the wide spectrum of players anticipated to frequent the facility”, says Costello. You will find that there are a variety of terrains and elevations throughout the course, with a creek that runs through the slightly higher elevated back nine that makes the player think about their strategy and club selection. The green complexes have some undulation but fair to the player in design, giving plenty of opportunities to make birdies.

10

Golfers will also notice that they are not the only ones on the course. There are plenty of views of birds and wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and chipmunks. But, along holes 11 thru 14 you can see a sanctuary dedicated to the Federally Endangered Callippe Butterfly for which the course is named. Which makes the course a Audobon International Certified Cooperative Sanctuary. This award winning and highly recognized daily fee course is definitely a place to play when coming to SF Bay Area. Located in Pleasanton hidden just minutes off of Highway 680 making it easily accessible from all over Northern California.

LOOK AHEAD TO FALL PRACTICE Written By: Chris Smeal, PGA And Founder Of Future Champions Golf

FALL IS ALMOST HERE! HOW WILL YOU SPEND YOUR TIME IMPROVING YOUR GAME? I think it is a great time to do some analysis of your summer tournaments and figure out what has been working and what hasn’t been working. Did you achieve all of your summer goals? Everything starts with assessing what you have been up to and where you want to go. The fall is an interesting time of year as we have shorter days with less light and we have school schedules to manage. But this is also the same time of year the Fall College Golf Season is played so you have to be good in college at managing all. So there are 2 unique situations here. One in which certain players will need to be in tournament mode and others in practice mode.

PRACTICE MODE Set up with your golf coach a lesson schedule that is strategic. In your early fall training sessions, spend some time with your coach to evaluate your recent play and what your goals are for the fall season and what your goals are for next year. Attack all weaknesses and turn them into strengths and sharpen your strengths so everything is getting better.

12

If a bigger change to your game is needed then the Fall season is the best time to do it. Maybe not play any or as many tournaments and really work on your game to take it to the next level.

TOURNAMENT PLAYING MODE For those players who are in need of playing experience, building your tournament resume, and trying to prepare for your future college golf fall experiences it is best to play 1-2 competitive tournaments per month. Best way to handle it is look ahead and schedule your events as best you can around your school schedule. Select events you will have time to play practice rounds so you have that feel of having an advantage and knowing enough about the course to be in contention. As you compete, play with a mindset that it isn’t like summer so you may not be as sharp as you were when you were playing everyday all day. I highly recommend when possible to play or practice on the golf course the Friday afternoon before every weekend tournament. It is good to see what you have been working on transfer to the golf course so you don’t have those early struggles many players experience when they haven’t had enough time to transfer their improvements onto the course. Thank you for reading! If you have any questions or comments please send to chrissmeal@gmail.com

At the beginning of quarantine, I was grinding at the course almost daily until I noticed a loss of motivation to golf. I was unsure if summer tournaments and my college golf season would continue during the pandemic and wondered if it was even worth practicing for an unpredictable competition schedule. That was when I picked up surfing as a hobby to have when I was not golfing. I paddled out every morning, hooked on the trial and error process of trying to catch waves. Similar to golf, surfing required a lot of patience and celebration for the smallest improvements. As I continued to surf often and built my paddling strength, I noticed the golf club feeling a little lighter and felt that I could swing faster. Catching a wave and sitting in the line-up was also a relaxing mental break from golf. The local surfers in the lineup helped me have a more easy-going and positive attitude on the course, as they are the happiest and most positive people I have ever met. I credit a majority of my golf success to surfing due to its benefits to my physical and mental game. However, most importantly, it taught me how to balance life with my golf schedule. Golf preparations and practice schedules vary; some players prefer to practice daily and others like to spend fewer hours on their game. Through surfing, I found out that I play my best when I have a few days of practice, balanced with surf sessions and other activities (planting, hanging out with friends, etc.). Golf is a very mental game, therefore off-days from the sport can and DO help. I encourage other golfers, especially juniors, to find their own balance of practice, competition, and fun/relaxing activities off the course to progress in their golf careers.

Photograph By: Sean Bishop from Son of A Bishop Photography

I have been surfing on and off with my dad since I was about eight years old and it has definitely had a strong influence on my golf game. When I am surfing I am super focused on catching a wave but it also allows time in between just to think. This is really similar to golf in terms of what it takes to be successful. In between shots it is good to have other thoughts that are not completely golf related but in your pre shot routine and over the ball you need to be completely focused which is very similar to surfing. Also with the commitment to catching a wave it is very much like developing a golf swing. Each process takes time, patience, and trust. Especially when surfing bigger waves. In big waves it is really important to not panic. I remember one time when I was surfing with my dad and I wasn’t super comfortable in the water since the waves were out of my comfort zone. However my dad made sure I stayed calm because if I panicked the situation could have been stressful. I remember taking deep easy breaths and relaxing. This is a similar strategy I use when I notice myself getting nervous over a golf shot -- just taking deep easy breaths and relaxing. I do not surf as much as I want to but every time I go it is always so refreshing and a nice break. It is really important to have hobbies like this just to take small breaks from golf. They are beneficial! - Kaila Higgins 13

BEING A NEDVOCATE By Dennis Murphy Being a NEDvocate can come in many different forms, whether you’ve had cancer or simply support someone who has, you are a NEDvocate! Andrew Silsby, a 20 year old college student from New Hampshire channeled his passion for golf to raise awareness and funds for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, an organization that helps children with pediatric cancers. Andrew, a NEDvocate, is also a survivor.

14

On June 6, 2006 at the age of five Andrew’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Andrew went from being a typical developing kid to living life from MRI to MRI. He was sidelined from sports and his life became focused on recovery which took many years of hard work. Andrew is a survivor and defied the medical odds achieving a near normal recovery. Andrew continues to struggle with physical and learning challenges but he has not let that get in his way.

Andrew’s passion for hockey was ignited 9 years ago when Friends of Jaclyn came together with the University of New Hampshire Men’s Hockey team to create an opportunity for him to be adopted. Andrew spent 6 years as an honorary member of this hockey team before aging out of the program at 18.

Andrew’s experience with the UNH hockey team was life changing. He attended all of the games, practices and had game day responsibilities. The coaches and staff welcomed him and included Andrew in all aspects of the team. The players also spent time doing fun things with Andrew off the ice which helped provide a break from his day to day struggles. Andrew’s confidence skyrocketed and for the first time in his life felt important and valued. Andrew’s motivation to do well in school increased and his grades dramatically improved.

“It is really hard to put into words the impact that this program has had on my life. I really don’t know where I would be without it” said Silsby. Five years ago Andrew wanted to express his gratitude to Friends of Jaclyn. Andrew is an avid golfer and approached the golf pro at his home course about hosting a charity tournament. Andrew got to work and developed and organized the Swing 4 Jaclyn Golf Tournament. He worked with the local community to secure sponsorships and raffle items and sold out the event. It was so successful that Andrew has made this an annual event raising $57,000 over the last 4 tournaments. “Friends of Jaclyn took a really awful situation and created an amazing opportunity for me” said Silsby. Andrew attends the University of New Hampshire majoring in Sports Management & Leadership. He has worked at a golf course for the past 6 years and is an intern for the New Hampshire Golf Association. During the hockey season, Andrew is a student manager for the UNH men’s hockey team and will always be a great NEDvocate!

Staff Spotlight

Alli Kim I began playing golf at age seven, began competing in events such as FCG around thirteen, and committed to a Division 1 program at fifteen. After playing a year at the University of Nevada Las Vegas I transferred to Point Loma Nazarene University where I had a great college golf experience. Compared to my time at my previous school I had a great golf, school, and personal life balance. I was able to play golf while also having a great college experience in and outside of the classroom. As a kinesiology major at a now smaller university I was able to learn in smaller class sizes and work more intimately with my professors especially during our busy golf season. My favorite part about college golf was the team dynamic and traveling with a great group of girls. As a junior golfer, that team dynamic can often be absent so it was great being able to experience that in college. After graduating in June with a BS in Kinesiology and Applied Health I have decided to return to PLNU and assistant coach while I plan for graduate school. I’m so excited to work with Head Coach Lance Hancock and continue to grow the school’s program. Junior golf tours such as FCG definitely played a huge role in my pathway to college golf and I’m grateful for the few years I have been able to work for them!

PAST PLAYER UPDATE

BEING A HEAD GOLF COACH “I am very excited about this opportunity that Long Beach has provided me. Being a head coach has been a dream of mine since I decided college coaching was my passion. I can’t wait to help the student athletes grow as golfers as well as people.” “Finding a place to play in college can be overwhelming, a piece of advice to any athlete looking to play a sport in college is to ask the coaches as many questions as possible to help you through the process. We are your best resource to navigate college athletics as well find the best program for you.”

BOYS COLLEGE PREP

Brandon Knight Class of 2023 Light’s on, it’s Knight time! When Brandon Knight qualified for the FCG Callaway World Championship back in December of last year, he had come back from being 4-strokes down to winning the tournament by two. Coming into the championship this year he wasn’t sure what to expect. But he was going to try his best. And best he did…history once again repeated itself. After shooting a first round score of +1, 73 he found himself outside of the top ten, 6-strokes behind the leader. But when day two ended he had jumped up tied for 2nd after going under par with a 67. On the final day he was in the final group ready to fight back and that he did, putting pressure on the leader, Xuan Kai Chang of Taiwan the whole round. Although Chang shot another sub-par round of 69, it wasn’t enough to stave off the hard charging Knight who turned in a card of -8, 64 for the day. Which gave him a 3-day total of 205 and winning the championship by one stroke to become the 2021 Boys 15-18 World Champion. Because of the persistence and perseverance of his performance earns him the Player of the Month title.

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP

Natachanok Tunwannarux Class of 2023 Making the journey from Thailand after a year of restrictions and uncertainty she was going to make the best of her 2021 summer season here in the U.S. And best she did. She had two Top 5 finishes in the month of tough international competitions in southern California which included the FCG Callaway World Championship. Prior to those two events, the 13th Annual FCG International is the place where she really shined. But being able to shine didn’t come easy. Chasing the leader, Thanana Kotchsanmanee, also of Thailand for the first two rounds by 1-stroke, Natachanok was able to finally catch and surpass the leader. At the end of the final round, she found herself on top of the leaderboard. But she couldn’t claim the championship yet. It wasn’t until the completion of the four-hole playoff with Vivian Chen of Taiwan that allowed Natachanok to emerge as the 2021 Girls 15-18 Champion of the FCG International. Because of her consistent play earns her the Player of the Month title.
