FUTURE CHAMPIONS

GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, We would like to thank you for reading our 10th issue! It is hard to believe what was just an idea in early March has turned into 10 issues of content driven to feature the happenings on the FCG Tour and to inspire junior golfers and help parents along the way. It has been a lot of work and a lot of help from many different people and we thank everyone for their support. We look forward to an even better 2022 year with the program and the FCG Magazine. We are always up to hearing from you so please drop us a message if you have any ideas or any comments to make the magazine and the FCG program better. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids. As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf. Common College Golf Recruiting Myths During 11 years as a college coach, I hosted lots of families in my offices in both Bloomington, IN and Washington, DC. I heard many interesting statements from recruits and parents who knew anywhere ranging from a little to a lot about the college recruiting process. As a performance coach and college recruiting expert, these myths are some of my favorites and worth mentioning. You may be holding onto some of these myths yourself. Myth #1: If I play really well this summer, coaches will find me. All I need is one breakthrough tournament. Reality: Coaches are looking at your entire body of work. One or two solid tournaments, while impressive, won’t cause a whole line of coaches to knock on your door. You may get attention from a few coaches from a great stretch of tournaments, but it’s best not to put that pressure on yourself and rely on multiple above average performances. Instead, stay proactive and engage with coaches regularly. Send them email updates. Follow their programs on Instagram. Like their posts. Get to know what type of coach you would be playing for and what type of players attend that program. Learn about the culture and long-term goals of the program so that you can evaluate whether or not it’s a match. You must do your part in this. It’s a marathon— not a sprint! Enjoy the process so that you can make an informed decision.

ing services every day. Typically, 90% of the golfers being marketed in these emails should NOT be targeting their schools. An example of this would be from my time as the head coach at Georgetown. I would wake up to about 5-10 emails from various recruiting services. I still wake up to their emails, and I left the program four years ago so some of those companies need to update their contact information! Most students had SAT scores of below 900 while the average SAT for incoming freshmen at Georgetown was above 1400. None of those students had any business in trying to get admitted to the school, much less the golf program. I deleted those emails which is what most coaches do! Coaches see these “puppy mill” services as a lazy way to handle your recruitment. These services are often a good deal, but coaches don’t like to have their communications with you living on some 3rd party platform. Are you really going to outsource one of the most important decisions of your life? Be proactive and take control of your recruitment by proactively communicating with coaches.

Myth #2: I’m targeting a Division I offer. Based on my scores, I expect a scholarship. Reality: Let’s talk numbers here. A Division I fully-funded men’s program has 4.5 scholarships. Fully-funded women’s programs have 6 scholarships. Scholarships are divided up among all players on the roster which can range from 8-12. There are 299 men’s programs and 267 women’s programs in Division I. Coaches are recruiting the best players in THE WORLD. If they bring in 1-2 players per year, you need to have a pretty substantial resume to play Division I golf at all. One of the best ways to see the types of programs you should be targeting is to look at your Junior Golf Scoreboard ranking compared to the class that is graduating this year. Those players have announced their commitments on the website. See what types of universities the players of your ability level are attending. It will save you time and determine the caliber of school you should be targeting. To see how good college players are, check out their scoring averages at the NCAA Division I, II, and II level. Myth #3: I’ll hire a cheap recruiting service to do this for me. Coaches love those! Reality: Coaches receive countless emails from recruit-

FCG NAPA CHAMPIONSHIP January 16-17, 2022 // Register Here >

Silverado Resort & Spa – Napa, CA By Dean Gregory – December 11, 2021 In January 2022, the FCG Napa World Series Championship will once again be held in the heart of the world- famous Napa Valley at the Silverado Resort & Spa, home of the PGA Tour’s season opener Fortinet Championship (formerly The Safeway Open). The luxury hotel that offers spa services, tennis, and golf on two courses, South and North Courses. The latter having the most history since it opened 66 years ago in 1955. The North Course was re-designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1966 along with the South Course being added. Two years later, the resort became a staple for the PGA Tour. From 1968 through 1980, the resort hosted the Kaiser International Open / Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic (1977-1980) before moving to the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA. It wasn’t until 1989 through 2002 when the PGA Champions Tour, did the resort was again graced by a professional golf tour. Then the PGA Tour returned in 2014, four years after Johnny Miller made changes to both

courses which included making the North Course longer bringing it up to 7,166 yards. Both courses have seen many of golf’s legends and soon to be legends take on the challenges of the distinct designs. The South course has undulating medium sized greens that makes you think to be on the correct side of the hole which, makes your approach shot more demanding to place your ball in the right spots. On the North, the course is more traditional with many of the holes that have tree-lined fairways and small greens. You will find that the courses have their challenges but fair. So, take the walk and play where Miller, Nicklaus, Trevino, Mickelson, and McIlroy have done so before. And while you do, make sure you get what makes the day worthwhile. Eat a Burger Dog from the snack shack.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips ELITE PLAYER PRACTICE SCHEDULE Here is a sample of a practice schedule that an elite player would follow. Your schedule is ever changing so you have to adjust often but it is key to schedule your practice and have clear goals for each practice session. If you find yourself just beating range balls and putting for 30-minutes then you should probably take a deeper look into how the game’s best are practicing. HOW GOOD DO YOU WANT TO BE? • Put Some Purpose in Your Practice. It is not enough to just go hit some balls. You must have a goal and you must be working towards something. • Add or Take out anything based on your time • Remember – for every minute you’re not practicing, someone else is and is getting better than youPractice- Play – Compete – Learn – ReadWatch – Train • We are practicing for the Big Moments in Golf… The final 9-Holes of a tournament when you are in contention. The ability to hit a great lag putt on the final hole of an event. To make a clutch 3 foot left to right putt on the final hole to qualify for the US Amateur. To drive it down the center of the 18th hole of the US Open on the final day with water right and bunkers left. MONDAY • 9-Holes at Par 3 Course working on Distance Control with irons • Play First ball for score. • Play extra ball from 30-40 yards short of green and keep that balls score • Hit extra short chips just off side of green if play is slow and you have time to practice Putting Session – 40-Minutes • Make 50 Putts from 3 Feet • Play 9-Hole 2-Putt Game (Pick 9 putts outside of 20 feet and you have to 2-putt all 9-Holes Nightime Gym Workout • Weights and Cardio

TUESDAY

THURSDAY

Range Day – 3 Hour Practice Session • Warm Up with Pitch Shots for feel and contact. • Work on Wedges for 7 Minutes LW – SW – PW • Practice High Shots, Low Shots, Vary Distances with each club • Practice Full Finish vs. Cut Off Finish with each club • Hit Odd Number Clubs Today (9, 7, 5, 3 iron) Practice Ball Flight • 3 Fades and 3 draws with each club calling shots on command. If you struggle keep working on it until you have a good pattern going. • Hit 12-18 Woods off the ground working on ball flight pattern. Hit high fades with 3 wood to practice landing the ball softly. Then put 3 wood on short tee and work on turning it over and hitting it farther. Driver Drill • Pick different targets and hit to a determined fairway. Do your full pre shot routine like it’s the opening tee shot of a tournament. Track whether you hit fairway, miss right or miss left for each shot. Do this daily and you can stay on top of hitting your fairways. • Play a Mock Round on the Range of the next course you plan to play. Good drill for your imagination and to see if you can hit good shots switching clubs rather than pounding the same one over and over again. Nighttime Gym Workout • Cardio and Stretching

18-Holes on Course • You have now had 3 straight days of practice so go ahead and play 18-Holes for score. • If you are working on something particular in your game that still needs work and you miss a shot you should drop another ball and try and fix it. It’s important to balance out scoring style practice rounds with practice rounds to work on things. • After your round you should practice any areas of weakness or replay some key shots you could have improved on. Nighttime Cardio Workout

WEDNESDAY Short Game and Range Day • Start with Pitching and Chipping • 30-Minutes of dropping multiple balls in one location and practicing repeating same shot over and over • 30-Minutes of practicing Scoring around the green. Putting Session • Start with 9-Hole Stroke Play Practice to see if you can putt good right away. • Green Reading Drill Using sticks to choose read and see if you read the break correctly • Lag putt to circle of tees from 30-40-50 feet Range Session • Ball Flight Drill • Work on Each Club in your bag and try to hit the same shot pattern with each shot. Maybe hit every ball today with a slight draw, or a slight fade. • Do some weighted clubs swing to increase club head speed. • Practice hitting the driver with max speed to increase club head speed. Max speed with balance, make sure you stick your finish. Night Time Gym Workout • Weights and Cardio

NEDVOCATES KNOW NO BORDERS By Dennis Murphy He’s experienced it as a father, coach, and administrator, but the one constant by which he’s carried himself has remained the same —a true visionary leader. Josh Blumenthal or more affectionately known ‘Blu’, has been working with Friends of Jaclyn since 2009, first introduced while an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Babson College. Since that time, he has not only stayed heavily involved, created meaningful memories, raised funds, but has most importantly, created unbelievable experiences for nearly ten children all living with what we call, ‘The Beast’ (cancer). Having been at a number of adoptions from the east to west coast with Blu, I have often said, and will continue to do so, that coaches coach and leaders lead, for which he is both - as we know, this is not always the case. For Blu, who has seen too many children struggle, talking about being a part of his family makes him a little emotional. Coaching is his passion but family is at his core and is always communicated, “whether it’s a text message or a phone call, they [his players] are the adoptee’s support system, and he’s so grateful for every moment these children have with his team,” Blu said. “The players are such positive people, and to watch a child’s face light up whenever they go to practice or a game ... priceless.” Blu paused, “To bring him [his adoptee] joy, what’s better than that?” Nothing at all. Coach Blu has not only created and executed firstclass adoption ceremonies, but has done so with the

12

utmost gentleness. He has made it a point to include his own family (wife Cherilynn, son Ethan, and daughter Harper) every step of the way, and thus lending support from a number of different avenues to the FOJ families. In doing so he strives to show his own children, and players, a different perspective. That extra lap or early morning practice doesn’t seem as difficult when they are face to face with a child who is battling for his or her life. There is no chemotherapy, radiation or clinical trial drug as powerful as love, support and friendship. Blu has experienced the joys and sorrows that come with Friends of Jaclyn through adoption and loss, but remains steadfast in his vision to help those achieve an immediate quality of life improvement. He has been an integral part of adoptions all over the country, most notably, New England, Texas, and presently Wisconsin, where he serves as athletic director at Wayland Academy. Coach Blu and his boys lacrosse team at St. Andrew’s School in Austin, Texas adopted DJ and his family in 2017. For 2 amazing years Blu and his team included DJ and his brother in events ranging from games and practices to evenings out and about (the movies, arcades, and the like). Blu and his entire family, particularly his son, Ethan embraced DJ and Jaxen and made them feel like more than just team members, but family. In 2019 DJ’s battle with a malignant brain tumor ended, and he earned his angel wings. The team was crushed, but continued to wear DJ stickers on their helmets and play in his honor. To date the family is still connected with the players who originally adopted DJ.

Fast forward to the present--Blu is now the Athletic Director at Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI. He is making strides in expanding the athletic program and even before the ink was dry on his contract he contacted FOJ to start the process of locating a family in WI that he, his family, and his team could “adopt.” A few weeks into the school year the team hosted Mason and his family and welcomed them to the Big Red! Even though Mason has only been part of the Wayland family for a few short months, he and his family feel the love and are so grateful for the support of the entire Wayland community. Heather, Mason’s mom, wrote to Blu after an “outside the lines” outing and said,”I just wanted to let you know that Wayland has an amazing group of kids (especially the lacrosse team). Mason had the best night on Saturday. He loved hanging out with you all in “his world.” I am enjoying getting to know you all better. Hearing what the kids want to do in life, watching them have fun. Especially ordering wings too hot that you need 5 milks. I’m so glad that I filled out the papers for Friends of Jaclyn. You all have blessed us in many ways.” While it’s impossible to know what lies in store for Mason as he makes his way through his diagnosis, it goes without saying that he will always have the support of his FOJ family! In addition to Coach Blu’s help in connecting children with teams, he has also connected students with a greater purpose with FOJ. Cue Griffin Hughland--a senior cross country student who needed a topic for his senior capstone project. Griffin has been working to try to connect more children with teams at Wayland. Griffin is using his resources to network in the community and share FOJ’s mission with more families that need the support of a team. If you know anyone who is looking for a team to help them through a cancer diagnosis you can refer them to the FOJ website (www. friendsofjaclyn.org) where they can learn more about FOJ’s programs and register for placement.

“The mission of Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) always resonated well with me even from the beginning,” Blumenthal shared. “Live in the moment, play in the moment is not something I take lightly, and want to continue to do all I can to embrace that mantra.” “I take pride in being dubbed a NEDvocate,” Blu shared. “I believe in my heart of hearts that what Friends of Jaclyn affords children is truly second to none, and am so proud to be a part of this wonderful and life-improving organization.” Blu encourages his players and anyone in his network to understand that being a NEDvocate simply means you are supporting someone who has battled, is battling, or knows someone who has battled cancer. Being part of a support system is oftentimes the best gift you can give someone. While each day surely brings both new challenges and opportunities, we know that we can continue to accomplish anything we set out to do so long as we continue to have strong NEDvocates like the Blumenthal Family by our side! Future Champions of Golf’s Chris Smeal and staff are NEDvocating and spreading FOJ’s mission, giving children battling pediatric cancer hope and inspiration as they battle the beast. Priceless!!! FCG FAQ’s At various tournaments throughout the year, the FCG staff will be asked these common questions.

ABOUT FCG How many tournaments does Future Champions Golf hold a year? FCG holds over 100 events across the western states and Texas. This includes three major tournaments, The FCG International, FCG Callaway World Championship and the year-end, FCG National Championship. **Look for exciting news regarding the 2022 season coming out soon! Do college coaches follow FCG? FCG tournaments are a standard recruiting stop for a lot of coaches from Upper DI to DIII Men’s and Women’s teams. It’s not unusual to see over 80 coaches throughout the year at our events. We also email every college coach results of each and every event.

TOURNAMENT PLAY Why doesn’t FCG use “Live Scoring”? Quite simply, we want players to be focused on playing their best. We have found that with current Live Scoring systems in use that utilize cell phones, players have been distracted by texts, social media or even gaming. In some cases players have been coached by texts during play. The yardage that you set up at the tournaments are not the same as they are on the website. Why? The yardages that are posted on the website are there to give the player a general estimate of how long the course will be playing for their division. Part of the development of the junior golfer is having the skill of being able to think and to make adjustments of the given situations. There are many factors that go into the difference of yardages. Here are a few examples: - Basic course maintenance, on a day-to-day basis the course will change the tee area to prevent wear and tear of the tee box. - The tournament committee may change some tees to challenge the players or if some holes will affect pace of play. - The environment will also play a big part. For ex ample if the wind is blowing 30 mph into the player the hole will play longer. If it’s a downwind, the hole will play shorter. Do you set the pins for the tournament? We do not set pins. Instead we allow the course to do so. Courses generally use the formula of six easy, six medium and six hard. We want the course to play as close as we can to what it is rated for. The 12 & under divisions are usually allowed caddies. But why are the caddies not allowed on the

34

putting green? We want the player to develop the skill of putting on their own. Unfortunately, when the caddy is on the green with the player, more often than not, the caddy will be involved in the shot more than the player. What do the initials that are sometimes shown on the leaderboard mean? The initials are to designate the status of a player that was part of a tournament. “JWD” - Justified Withdrawn: A player who is registered to play in a tournament but notifies the committee before the start of the tournament that they will not be playing. “WD” - Withdrawn: When a player has completed their first round and opts not to play the second round. “NC” - No Card: When a player decides not to complete play after starting their round. “DQ” - Disqualification: When a registered player does not show for the tournament without prior notification. Also, a player may be disqualified for an infraction under Rules of Golf.

PLAYER of the month NOVEMBER 2021

All winners will receive $100 gift card to use at www.UnderPar.com

BOYS COLLEGE PREP

Sam Higaki Class of 2023 Slammin’ Sam has been looking to turn that corner with his game. He’s been consistent but wasn’t quite able to jump to that next level. But at the FCG NorCal World Series at Poppy Hills GC it all changed. Finding himself going into the final round he found himself 3-strokes back of the leader. After signing his scorecard for an impressive 6-under 65, he forced a playoff with the overnight leader who shot a -3, 68. Because of his determination and excellent play he earns the title of FCG Player of the Month.

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP

Lauren Pham Class of 2023 Through the year, Lauren bounces back and forth to southern California to play in FCG events. So, when the FCG National Tour Fall Las Vegas Championship at the Legacy GC came to her home area, she took advantage of that. After carding an even par 72 round 1 score, she trailed the leader by 2-strokes. Lauren was determined to improve on that in the final round. And that she did, grinding out 5 birdies with a just a couple of hiccups shooting 3-under, 69. Taking the championship by 4-strokes. Because of her “Never Give Up” attitude and play, she earns the right to say that she is an FCG Player of the Month.

First Thought

The Last Thought

Christmas is around the corner which means that the new year of 2022 is not far behind. As you reflect back on what the past year has brought you, it’s also a time to look at what the next year might bring. Time to get those resolutions in order, set goals, make your plans to be in an even better place than where you were in 2021.

a nationally recognized tour event. He shot his career best -8 total for three days. So as a player who has a scoring average of 73.04, you can imagine he was excited and full of confidence. Unfortunately, when he came back to play in his local tournaments, reality set in, that same success wasn’t there.

This also means that the competitive junior golfer will be looking at where and what tournaments they will play. Which brings on the question,” How do I choose the right tournaments to play?”. There are many reasons that people choose the tournaments they play or don’t play in such as:

There was another player who I helped in her practice round for another nationally recognized tour event that was being held at the Stanford Golf Course. The tournament had marked on the green what the pin positions would be for the 2-days. All of the positions were in the flattest spots on the greens. The low scores reflected the easy set-up of the course.

By Dean Gregory, December 8, 2021

“That’s a good course.” “That’s not a good course” “The field should be easy.” “The field might be too tough.” “The course is too long,” “The course is too short.” These are just a few but there are many more that are just like them. But there is one reason that generally gets overlooked. ”Which tournament will help the development of my game?”. If you analyze the reasons, most of them are, “results oriented”. I have seen more players worry more about their rankings than they do about their games. So a lot of tournaments that get chosen are ones that belong to what I like to call, “Feel Good Tours”. These are tours that like to make sure that they generally set up the courses for easier scoring. Here are a couple of examples of why I call them Feel Good Tours:

The Feel Good Tours might be good for rankings but in the long run not the best choice for the development of a player. You will find that most of these tours will publish high ratings but set the course up that’s much lower.
