FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE
Dear Junior Golf Community,
We would like to thank you for reading our 20th issue! It is hard to believe what was just an idea in early March 2021 has turned into almost two full years of content driven to feature the happenings on the FCG Tour and to inspire junior golfers and help parents along the way. It has been a lot of work and a lot of help from many different people and we thank everyone for their support. We look forward to an even better 2023 year with the FCG expansion plans and the FCG Magazine. We are always up to hearing from you so please drop us a message if you have any ideas or any comments to make the magazine and the FCG program better.
In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids.
As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf.

Half Moon Bay Golf Links
By Dean Gregory – November 30, 2022South of San Francisco lies the small coastal town of Half Moon Bay. A town that every celebrates the fall season every October with The Pumpkin Festival. The famous big-wave surfing competition, Mavericks also takes place. And if you have a hankering for Dunge ness Crab, you’ll find that it harbors the majority of the boats that troll the waters of the coast for the wonder ful tasting crustaceans.
It is also home to the Half Moon Bay Golf Links, once billed as the poor man’s Pebble Beach and one of the most dramatic finishing 18th holes along the west coast. The facility features two courses that are dis tinctly different. The Old Course which was designed by Arnold Palmer in 1973 is a lush parkland style course
that features doglegs that are tree-lined and water hazards. The Ocean Course built in 1997 designed by Arthur Hill is links styled and was ranked one of the Top 12 Public Golf Courses by Golf Advisor in 2018. With the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop, it has hosted numerous U.S. Open Qual ifiers and 2008 Samsung World Championship which one of the LPGA’s local favorite Paula Creamer won. And if you time it correctly, an hour before sunset you can hear a Scottish Bagpiper along with the sounds of the ocean waves.
On January 15 & 16, 2023 this California coastal gem of a golf course, will be the host of the FCG World Series Half Moon Bay Championship.
Smeal’s Coaching Tips
FOR JUNIORS AND PARENTS PACE OF PLAY TIPS
We wanted to share some Pace of Play Tips for Junior Golfers and Parents competing on the FCG Kids Tour and FCG KBS One Day Series Events. This can be used at all levels but this is specific to these tournament levels.
#1 – PLAY READY GOLF AND BE READY TO GO.
The only time you need to play in order is off the first tee when they announce your name.
#2
– WALK WITH PURPOSE
Walk quickly to your next shot, start your prep work on your walk, get your information, then react and play.
#3
– BE A TEAM OUT THERE
Players and if there are caddies should work together with a purpose to play fast. You will play better if the flow is better. Slow play is not fun but nothing can be done to help if everyone doesn’t do their part.
#4 – PUT YOUR BAG ON THE FRINGE CLOSEST TO THE NEXT TEE BOX
Efficiency is key to save time out there. If you can put your bag on the side of the green closest to the next tee will save a few seconds.
#5
– BE ORGANIZED
Being a great player means you can handle all the things going on in a golf tournament including playing at the proper pace. This needs to be an active part of your player development and not under looked. Your organizational skills include being prepared before
the first tee announcements (Ball, Ball Marker, Tees, Scorecard, Pencil, Range Finder) You need a system for each of these things to manage them quickly and efficiently.
#6 – KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU
Obviously you can’t go faster than the group ahead of you so stay up with them. The definition of being behind them in the proper place is on par 4’s to arrive to the tee as the group ahead is finishing hitting their approach shots.
#7 – WE WOULD LIKE THE PLAYER WHO PUTTS OUT FIRST TO HEAD TO THE NEXT TEE AND TEE OFF
Be cautious and respectful as you walk to the next tee but go and get started on your routine and hit to keep pace moving. Especially if your group is behind this has to happen!
If you have a question please contact us anytime we are here to help everyone!

ACTIONS OF AN ANGEL
By Dennis MurphyI have been exposed and blessed to meet some incredible human beings on this journey. From all walks of life, cancer knows no zip code and doesn’t discriminate. We met Stacia Boyton at a cancer event in Mass after Jaclyn was diagnosed with her malign brain tumor. After meeting her parents Matt and Suzanne, I knew why she was different from all her other peers at her age. There is a saying in our cancer community, “Get’s it”! Stacia demonstrated she “Get’s it” by her actions. Blessed to have Stacia on our journey improving the quality of life for children battling the beast.
“In the year 2007, I developed a newfound passion for working with children living with brain tumors. My passion was sparked when I met a young girl named Jaclyn Murphy and learned more about her family’s mission. I have spent many years working to help grow this foundation through volunteer and then ultimately became a member of the foundations team. During this time worked with hundreds of families from around the world addressing the fears and traumas they faced when this disease entered their lives.
I worked closely with these families to help create a therapeutic healing process. Having this experience helped me to understand how challenging it is to live with childhood cancer. In conjunction to dealing with the effects of a brain injury, and how it impacts the entire family. During this time working at Friends of Jaclyn I was in awe at how many different medical professionals, doctors’ visits, and supports families living with cancer encounter during a diagnosis of a young one. I would spend hours on the phone each week talking with parents, coaches, and kids in the foundation working to understand the needs and
supports that would be beneficial for families. What I learned during this process is there is no s tandard because each family has its unique needs. After leaving the foundation I went back to school to earn my Master’s Degree as a Mental Health Counselor with a Specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University. During my educational process I focused on how to use art, music, dance, drama, and play to support kids and families. This expanded my understanding of how trauma affects the brain, body, and family system.
Since becoming an expressive arts therapist I have worked in a variety of settings including after school, inpatient mental health, group and outpatient. I recently opened my own Expressive Arts Studio in Humarock, MA to continue sharing the gifts that the expressive arts modalities provide. Using these modalities offers an opportunity to engage in a creative process to increase one’s ability to connect, create, and regulate. Empowering kiddos to gain mastery in new ways that create sparkly eyed moments, creative expression, and how to regulate their nervous systems not only supports them but also the family. As I continue to grow the studio I hope to provide increased education on the expressive arts, regulation strategies, and honoring my role as a forever Nedvocate. I look forward to welcoming families living with cancer to my studio while also raising awareness on a small community scale”.
Actions do speak louder than words, Stacia Boyton-NEDvocate has proactively changed many children’s lives at such a young age with her actions. Actions of an angel!

SPEED TRAINING FOR JUNIOR GOLFERS
By: Ryan Engstrom - Engstrom AthleticsOne of the fastest ways for a junior golfer to hit the ball further, is to incorporate speed training. The main goal of speed training is to turn their nervous system on and to understand that it is ok to swing fast.
Most athletes have a governor on their speed. Mean ing, their body is capable of going faster, but some times their brain isn’t fully aware of it, so it won’t always allow for a faster swing.
There are a couple different ways to go about speed training. With my junior athletes, I begin with short 5-10 second all-out sprints.
Next, I like to incorporate different types of overspeed training, such as swinging super-speed sticks and then eventually progress into throwing light medicine balls against a wall, as hard and fast as possible.
Some other benefits of overspeed and medicine ball training are:
1. Improved sequencing
2. Better ground force mechanics
3. Generating more lag
Once an athlete’s brain learns how to turn the nervous system on, a newfound speed is then unlocked. Next, it is imperative to start intergrating strength training.
To use a car analogy, strength training essentially gives you a bigger engine with more horsepower. You will only be able to swing at a certain speed because your body can only handle so much. That is why strength training is also a key factor to continue gaining more speed.
Engstrom Athletics specializes in improving an athletes club head speed and most importantly, helping you become a faster and stronger athlete.
Please reach out if you are interested in gaining more speed and power!

PLAYER of the month November 2022
BOYS COLLEGE PREP
Ethan Schramm
Class of 2027
Since moving up to the Boys College Prep Division in September, Ethan has had two Top 3 finishes in three starts. Which brings us to his fourth start at the FCG National Tour Thanksgiving Slam at twin Oaks GC where he carded a +2, 74. He found himself alone in 4th place and 4 strokes behind the overnight leader. Going into the second round he once again found himself chasing the leader. This time he prevailed in a big way. Ethan went on to fire a -6, 66 to overtake the lead and was crowned Champion for his third championship win this year. His consistent play earns the title of FCG November Boys Player of the Month.
GIRLS COLLEGE PREP
Inseoul Jiamanukoonkit
Class of 2026
At the FCG SoCal World Series Championship, Inseoul found herself 3-strokes in back of the leader after shooting a -1, 70 on the par 71 St. Mark Golf Club. Not letting that bother her, she went out the next day grinding out another -1, 70 which was good enough to take the championship by 1-stroke over the overnight leader. Because of her determination and consistent play, Inseoul earns FCG Girls November Player of the Month.
PLAYERS THAT SHOOT IN THE 60’S IN A ROUND ON THE FCG NATIONAL TOUR, FCG WORLD SERIES TOUR, AND FCG COLLEGIATE SERIES.

The Last Thought
THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS AMONG US
By Dean Gregory – November 30, 2022Since we are in the holiday season, I wanted to share some thoughts about it.
Thanksgiving – Although the turkey has been eaten, the potatoes have been mashed and gone. The pump kin pie was destroyed somewhere in my belly. There are a lot of things that I have been thankful for this year. But one of the biggest is, as I have traveled across the country, all of the relationships that I have made. I may see my new friends all of the time or maybe just once or twice a year. But each time I know will be special. For most of you, you will play with other golfers you’ve with played before and most undoubtedly some that you haven’t. For those that you haven’t, you will get to know that person over the four and a half hours you’ll be on the course with them. In the end, you’ve built a relationship that no one else has. You’ve shared that moment and it can never be taken back. And, no mat ter where your journey will take you it will always be a memory that you have. So, cherish these times and the friendships you make.
Christmas – Even though we all like to receive gifts during this time, Christmas is actually the “Season of Giving”. We go out and battle the crowded malls to find the perfect presents for people that are important to us. But the question that I have is, why is Christmas the only time that we give these tokens of love and appreciation. What happens the rest of the year? During the year, it’s easy to get busy with homework, practice, tournaments, and other activities that we don’t take time to stop and appreciate all of the people that help to make you who you are. In essence, we’ve taken them for granted and almost feel like it’s their duty to do the things that they do. Daily things become just part of the routine. This should never be the case. Make everyday like Christmas and show that what they do is important to you.
New Year’s – Every 365 days we have a chance to make a new start. Time to recollect and to learn from our past achievements and struggles. Make resolutions to improve to make you a better person.
Happy Holidays to All!
