FUTURE CHAMPIONS
GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, We would like to thank you for reading our 11th issue! It is hard to believe what was just an idea in early March 2021 has turned into 11 issues of content driven to feature the happenings on the FCG Tour and to inspire junior golfers and help parents along the way. It has been a lot of work and a lot of help from many different people and we thank everyone for their support. We look forward to an even better 2022 year with the program and the FCG Magazine. We are always up to hearing from you so please drop us a message if you have any ideas or any comments to make the magazine and the FCG program better. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids. As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf. She teaches and mentors golfers at Summit Golf School in The Woodlands, TX and offers consulting services through her company Collegiate Golf Connections.
Top 6 Ways NOT to be Recruited Most of the conversations I have with clients are about how to be recruited. I ask them questions like why do you play golf; how does it challenge you to be better, what do you love about it? We discuss how to schedule tournaments to get the most exposure in what field, how to put together a resume, a website, how to talk to coaches and how the overall process works. But in my office the other day, my husband asked a good question, “What would someone have to do not to get recruited?” That got me thinking, I started to look at recruiting from the other side, what behaviors would make coaches run the other way.
Here are the top 6 things you should stay away from altogether, limit or just consider doing much better. 6. LAZY ACADEMICS – If you have a lower gpa
than you should, it shows a lack of discipline, dedication, or complete commitment. This is the reason you are going to college in the first place, to get that degree and if coaches cannot count on you to do your job in the classroom, how can they trust you to represent the program, the staff, and the university with the commitment they require? This is not to say that learning disabilities and conditions such as ADHD are not to be taken into consideration, it is more common than you think. There are a multitude of players that have been wildly successful with conditions such as these. Today, with the universities and athletic departments academic support staff, there are plenty of opportunities to seek that degree and compete while doing it.
5. SOUR ATTITUDE/BAD BODY LANGUAGE – So much of elite performance is not
to do with a perfect golf swing, but revolve around grit, perseverance, and a positive attitude. This game is about managing emotions, good and bad. Having a performance plan that you work on, that you can rely on in the heat of a round, will limit the need to allow unnecessary outbursts or head-hanging-low looking at the ground. These skills are learned, if you do not have good body language or struggle with this, read a book, look up a sports psychologist in your area or performance expert to assist you. Contact me, I have several that I have worked with, and I am happy to recommend the best. College coaches do not expect to see perfection, they do expect to see a growth, development, and commitment from the players they recruit.
4. LACK OF APPRECIATION OR HUMILITY
– Golf is an expensive sport, some parents spending $10,000 – upwards of $30,000 a year for junior competitions all over the U.S., and sometimes the world. As a result, when a coach comes to watch, they want to see a confident but humble player and person, a golfer that may pick up a piece of trash that he/she did not drop or thank a volunteer. If the player is arrogant, that quality is not at all appealing and while they may watch you for a bit, given the opportunity to find the same talent in a humble confident package…they will pass on you. To watch a junior, thank their parent for the opportunity or trip no matter how they placed in the event is equal to a win! #Character
3. EXCESSIVE PARENT INVOLVEMENT –
Coaches want to communicate and get to know the junior golfer, parents are part of the process too, but coaches need to primarily communicate with the junior. If parents dominate the conversations or do everything for the junior…if a junior cannot put together a pushcart and prepare the bag for the day, RED FLAG. If the junior cannot communicate for him/herself in a confident clear manner at 16ish years old, they may need to work on those skills immediately and get better prepared. This is a must.
2. WILD SOCIAL MEDIA – Careful, careful! This a
line not to be crossed, make good decisions about what you post and the topics on which you post, comment or like. Coaches want someone who will represent the university, athletic department, and the coaching staff with the highest of integrity. It is customary practice now to run social media background checks along with criminal background checks by a university as well as conference level in today’s high stakes world of collegiate athletics. Do not let this be the reason your dream comes to a screeching halt.
1. BE HONEST
– All the time. Do not play the game of I will hold one coach up against another. If you embellish how many offers or the actual schools that you speaking to or considering, coaches will find out. Many coaches talk to each other and know who is recruiting whom. They see each other at events, some relationships go back to college days. So never, ever fudge on what programs offered you or how much aid you have been offered. After all, it contradicts everything golf stands for and speaks volumes to your integrity.

LAS VEGAS CHAMPIONSHIP APRIL 9-10 & 16-17 // Register Here >
Primm Valley Golf Club – Nipton, CA By Dean Gregory – January 11, 2021 2022 will mark the 13th year that the FCG Las Vegas Championship will be held at a little desert oasis that sits on the edge of the Mojave National Preserve. For two weeks in April nearly 260 junior golfers of all ages will come to Primm Valley Golf Club. Located 5-miles south of the California-Nevada border, the resort features two Tom Fazio 18-hole championship courses (Lakes and Desert) and a 22-acre practice facility. The two courses are distinctly different but complement each other quite well. The Lakes course that opened in 1997 which was awarded a top-ten rank in Golf Digest Magazine for best new courses. Measuring 6,945, this par 71 features lush green rolling fairways that are surrounded by groves of pine trees. You will find an expansive lake and river system that runs throughout most of the course. In fact, if you’re up to the challenge, some find the 10th hole could be a drivable par 4. Of course, the risk is you must cross over a wide lake that guards the bunkers in front of the green.
The Desert course which opened in 1998 is appropriately named because of it’s landscaping of palm and mesquite trees. And of course, what would a high mountain desert course be without a variety of cacti. You will also find water on five holes and well-bunkered greens on the 7,131-yard par 72 challenging layout. Keep your ball in the green stuff or you may be hitting off of rocks amongst 1 or 2 geckos you’ll find running around the desert areas. So, if you’re on your way or leaving or staying in Las Vegas, Primm Valley is worth the stop to play a round or two. Just 35 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip it’s not unusual to find many locals escape the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy the natural beauty of these Tom Fazio designed gems of the desert.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips PUT THESE DISCIPLINES INTO YOUR GAME ASAP It is important as you become a more complete tournament player to do things more and more consistently. If you want great results more often it takes finding the systems that work to make you play your best golf. Here are some disciples to put into your game to build consistency.
BRING YOUR TOWEL TO THE GREEN EVERY HOLE This is a simple thing to do but can be very powerful as it is something that you need to remember to do every time to be prepared and consistent. The ball will likely be dirty. Did you know? You are not allowed to rub your ball on the green to clean it off.
CREATE A WARM UP ROUTINE THAT IS CONSISTENT How do you spend your time before you tee off at each tournament? Facilities all have different amenities and tours have different policies for warm up time but you should develop your system for warming up. There are some great videos on YouTube to watch some of the game’s best PGA Tour Players warm up before an event. Here is Tiger Woods video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClYaGGGZe7g&t=16s
ALWAYS BE PREPARED - SO DO THIS THE NIGHT BEFORE I like to be prepared and never feel any stress prior to a tournament so I will prepare fully everytime to avoid forgetting anything and feeling. - Mark your golf balls for the next days tournament - Check your bag for all tournament essentials • Ball Markers • Tees • Golf Balls • Range Finder • Extra Battery for Range Finder • Towel • Glove (s) Clean your clubs • And clean your grips with hot water and soap For more information please contact the Future Champions Golf Academy at 619-339-2377 or email us at info@futurechampionsgolf.com

NEDZONE By Dennis Murphy Long time FOJ supporters, the Maynard family share the story of their young son’s brain cancer diagnosis and how they became NEDvocates. Aidan and his siblings, Sean and Abigail, were introduced to Friends of Jaclyn through their family friend, the Callahans. Sean Callahan, a fellow brain tumor warrior, was paired with the Army football team in 2014. His family shared their experience with the Maynards and soon thereafter Aidan and his siblings were paired with the Wake Forest Football and Women’s Basketball teams. Sean Callahan earned his angel wings in August 2015 but will forever be a huge part of the Army Football team, Friends of Jaclyn and the Maynard family. How Aidan Became a Demon Deacon He was only going to the doctor to look at a rash. Or so they thought. “Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Go straight to the 9th floor of Brenner’s Children’s Hospital at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. They are waiting for you, your son has leukemia.” And that’s how the journey began. When Joey Maynard’s son Aidan was diagnosed, he had no idea what they were in for. They found themselves in a hospital surrounded by family after family going through almost the same thing they were, but felt all alone-on an island like no other. A perennial team of amazing doctors and nurses and support staff was assuring , but they still felt isolated and lost. But a short time later, we got a message from Joey’s wife Erin’s past that changed the entire family’s lives. Erin’s friend from grammar school saw their social media posts about Aidan, and told us the story of his
12
son Sean and The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Sean was diagnosed with a brain tumor some years prior. And through FOJ, he was “adopted” by the Army West Point Football program. He thought that Aidan could benefit in becoming part of the FOJ family, and reached out on our behalf. They didn’t realize at the time, but this was the beginning of a whole new family for the entire Maynard family. A few weeks later, Aidan was “adopted” by the Wake Forest Demon Deacon Football program. Coach Dave Clawson and the entire program welcomed him in like one of their own. And a short time later, Aidan’s twin siblings…Abigail and Sean…were “adopted” by Coach Jen Hoover and the Demon Deacons Women’s Basketball program. Suddenly, their spare time was spent at practice so the kids could spend time with “their teammates.” All they could talk about was “the guys and girls.” All of a sudden…they were kids again. That’s what gets stolen when you battle this beast they call childhood cancer… their childhood. They were also blessed to become part of Jason Myers Motorsports. The Myers family welcomed the Maynard’s in like they were part of the family. And again, the kids were just kids again. Joey later reported to Friends of Jaclyn, “We had a chance to stop by the Wake Forest Football offices to see some of Aidan’s “teammates” after spending time with Sean and Abigail’s “teammates”...the Wake Forest Women’s Basketball team. When we stopped by, we saw one of the new players, grad transfer placekicker Eric Osteen. Eric comes to Wake Forest after playing for the Black Knights. Eric was a member of the
Army Football program at the same time as Friends of Jaclyn adoptee Sean Callahan. Sean was a vital part of not only the Army Football program, but also to our blessing in becoming members of the Demon Deacon family. When Sean’s family heard of Aidan’s diagnoses, they nominated him for their program. That is how we became Demon Deacons! When I mentioned Sean to Eric, his face lit up. Sean touched each and every member of the Black Knights football program. And to meet someone who was also affected by Sean in such a positive way makes Sean our hero more today than ever before.”
We realize that our wish, outside of a cure for childhood cancer, would be for every child fighting this war to be as blessed as our family is. That is where everyone can help. Becoming a NEDvocate takes almost nothing. Just reach out and ask “What can I do to give a child back their childhood?” To learn more about being a NEDvocate please visit our website: www.friendsofjaclyn.org/NED
And what do these three sports families have in common? They all understand the importance of a kid just being a kid. Simple things like playing with friends, attending birthday parties, having friends over for sleepovers…those are replaced by chemo visits, spinal taps, and, in Aiden’s journey, four different 19 day stays in the hospital. These are times you cannot get back. But the combination of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, alongside these amazing young athletes. Give these warriors the love and friendship they so often miss. Fast forward seven years later. They are blessed to report that Aidan is considered “cancer free”. He, and his siblings, are still a huge part of the Wake Forest family. But something was still missing. It took a chance meeting at a hospital Christmas party to put the final piece in place. The kids were texting with their teammates, when a parent asked what was going on. We explained to him about FOJ…and it hit us. HIS MAN’S SON NEEDS A TEAM! Joey made a call to Erin Stimson ( Exec Director) with FOJ and said we had a child in need of a team. And just after the holidays, they were told he was adopted by his own team.

FCG FAQ’s At various tournaments throughout the year, the FCG staff will be asked these common questions.
ABOUT FCG How many tournaments does Future Champions Golf hold a year? FCG holds over 100 events across the western states and Texas. This includes three major tournaments, The FCG International, FCG Callaway World Championship and the year-end, FCG National Championship. **Look for exciting news regarding the 2022 season coming out soon! Do college coaches follow FCG? FCG tournaments are a standard recruiting stop for a lot of coaches from Upper DI to DIII Men’s and Women’s teams. It’s not unusual to see over 80 coaches throughout the year at our events. We also email every college coach results of each and every event.
TOURNAMENT PLAY Why doesn’t FCG use “Live Scoring”? Quite simply, we want players to be focused on playing their best. We have found that with current Live Scoring systems in use that utilize cell phones, players have been distracted by texts, social media or even gaming. In some cases players have been coached by texts during play. The yardage that you set up at the tournaments are not the same as they are on the website. Why? The yardages that are posted on the website are there to give the player a general estimate of how long the course will be playing for their division. Part of the development of the junior golfer is having the skill of being able to think and to make adjustments of the given situations. There are many factors that go into the difference of yardages. Here are a few examples: - Basic course maintenance, on a day-to-day basis the course will change the tee area to prevent wear and tear of the tee box. - The tournament committee may change some tees to challenge the players or if some holes will affect pace of play. - The environment will also play a big part. For ex ample if the wind is blowing 30 mph into the player the hole will play longer. If it’s a downwind, the hole will play shorter. Do you set the pins for the tournament? We do not set pins. Instead we allow the course to do so. Courses generally use the formula of six easy, six medium and six hard. We want the course to play as close as we can to what it is rated for. The 12 & under divisions are usually allowed caddies. But why are the caddies not allowed on the
34
putting green? We want the player to develop the skill of putting on their own. Unfortunately, when the caddy is on the green with the player, more often than not, the caddy will be involved in the shot more than the player. What do the initials that are sometimes shown on the leaderboard mean? The initials are to designate the status of a player that was part of a tournament. “JWD” - Justified Withdrawn: A player who is registered to play in a tournament but notifies the committee before the start of the tournament that they will not be playing. “WD” - Withdrawn: When a player has completed their first round and opts not to play the second round. “NC” - No Card: When a player decides not to complete play after starting their round. “DQ” - Disqualification: When a registered player does not show for the tournament without prior notification. Also, a player may be disqualified for an infraction under Rules of Golf.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP
Jaeyoung (Jeffrey) Kwak Class of 2023 Jeffrey as he is known to his competitors, came to the 15th Annual FCG National Championship came ready to play. And, despite the schizophrenic weather of cold, warm, rain and sunny of the last of the FCG Big 3 tournaments of 2021, he worked his way around both Arrowood GC and Pala Mesa Resort to take the championship. After shooting 68 (Arrowood) on the first day and 69 (Pala Mesa) on the second, he went into the final round with a slim 2-stroke lead. He knew he had to shoot another low round bring home the win. And win he did by delivering a final round 69 (Arrowood) for a 3-day total of -8, 206. His solid, consistent play not only earns him a 3-stroke victory to become Champion, but also FCG Player of the Month for December.

PASSION FOR THE GAME By Dean Gregory, January 18, 2021
“I’m a firm believer in the theory that people only do their best at things they truly enjoy. It is difficult to excel at something you don’t enjoy”~Jack Nicklaus As we all know, Nicklaus not only did he truly enjoy the game of golf, but he played with overwhelming zeal and passion. Was or is he the only one that does. The answer of course is, “No.” Every player who plays the tour, is there because they have one thing in common, passion. Though the years of being involved in junior golf competition, I noticed a pattern of levels of passion. Most juniors start competing in tournaments such as the local U.S. Kids Tour at an early age. It’s a great environment for the child to learn how to compete and have fun while doing so. The kids get a chance to play and hang out with friends. They enjoy and start for most, they start to develop a passion to get better and play more. By the time the juniors reach the teen years, especially when high school plays a role, all of a sudden for a lot of players that passion they had when they were younger starts to dissipate. Let’s take a look at why that does. With the knowledge of college golf being a possibility for the golfer attitudes and views of where the player’s game changes. In many instances, the player’s support team starts to feel that they need to be more involved with almost every aspect of their players practice and game. Unfortunately when this happens, what a junior player thought of as a fun competitive sport to play, has become work. And now that the player is no longer an athlete competing in a sport, they have become an employee of the game. Here’s an example of where a player’s development went awry: A few years ago, there was an extremely talented junior golfer that quickly became the player to try to beat at every tournament she played. She ended up being recruited with a full scholarship by one of the top
The Last Thought women’s golf team at an upper DI university. She had the game to turn pro. But because of situations on this road she was on, her journey was cut short. She played every stroke of each round for most of career with an enormous amount of pressure. The pressure didn’t come from herself but, from a member of her support team, her dad. Being involved in every aspect of her game, he would watch her practice and tournaments. If there was something she did wrong, he would get angry. This was a behavior that many times would bring tears to her eyes. It also got him banned from being on the course when his daughter was playing. You would think that he would learn. But when she got to college, a place where most students look forward to because they can have the sense of some freedom to formulate who they want to be as an adult. The behavior didn’t stop. He would contact coaches all of time. Show up at practices when he wasn’t supposed to be there. One day it all came to a boiling point. She just walked away from it all. She quit golf. She quit school. The last that I heard from one her former coaches is that she went off somewhere to start working in a low paying job and started a family. Another example happened at a recent tournament I was at: When I did scoring, I can’t begin to tell how many times over two-days, “My mom is going to be mad at me”, “My dad is going to be mad at me”. And this coming after shooting a score somewhere in the mid-70s. How much outside pressure other than the pressure they create themselves are they really playing with. Sometimes it’s a wonder that they can still play. The moral of the stories is, the junior golfer needs guidance, positive support and help with the fostering in his/her development of passion to play. With golf, learning to play the game is a lot of self-discovery. This can only come from within the player. This is how they grow, mature and truly enjoying their game.
