FUTURE CHAMPIONS
GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, The Future Champions Golf Digital Magazine launched in March 2021 and aims to become the leading junior golf publication worldwide. This is an exciting time in the game of golf as the sport is booming on all levels. In recent years, golf was really only growing in competitive golf but since the pandemic hit and people’s interests have changed, golf has become the game of choice for many. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids for a lifetime. We hope you enjoy our September issue. Should you have any feedback or interests for future issues, please let us know. Advertisers, please contact us for more information on how to be involved with our growing community. As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf. Future Champions Golf Tour took over the Omni La Costa Resort for 9 days in August and hosted 3 Major Events for Junior and College Golfers It has always been important to us to host events at key courses for players to develop their skills to prepare for future opportunities in golf. FCG Tour competes on many PGA and LPGA Tour Golf Courses, as well as a lot of College Golf Tournament Venues. Omni La Costa has been a great partner with us over the years and we continue to host more Championships here. In 2024 Omni La Costa will host the NCAA Division 1 Golf Championships! The PGA Tour used to host the Tournament of Champions Event at La Costa. This 9-day stretch of tournaments was really important to us as we hosted 3 unique Championships for different ages and skill levels. It was great to see many players compete in both the FCG Invitational and the FCG Collegiate National Championship! Congratulations to Sera Hasegawa who won both the Invitational and Collegiate National Championship! Special thanks to Odyssey Golf for sponsoring our new event for the 12 and under divisions. All Champions earned an engraved Odyssey Putter! A special prize made by Callaway Golf’s Anthony Taranto who has been a huge supporter of the FCG Tour. AUGUST 1-2: FCG INVITATIONAL This special invitational was open to top players from the FCG National Tour Spring Series. // Final Leaderboard AUGUST 3-5: FCG COLLEGIATE SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP This event was our end of summer Collegiate Series Event being played at the future home of the NCAA Division 1 Golf Championships. // Final Leaderboard AUGUST 8-9: FCG ODYSSEY JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP This inaugural event brought together some of the top 12 and under junior golfers to compete at a World-Class venue. Washington National Golf Club By Dean Gregory – September 7, 2021 If you like wearing the color purple, then you will definitely fit right in. Washington National GC is home to the University of Washington Huskies. Located approximately 35 miles southeast of downtown Seattle, you will find this gem of a course that will offer you challenging about fair round of golf. Your golf wits will be tested the whole round, no matter what your skill level. Designed by former tour player John Fought, the course is scenic and challenging, with yardages playing 5117 yards (Freshman tees) to 7304 (Husky tees). And if you think just looking at the numbers are long, it generally plays longer. Fairways are wide but you can’t just “Grip
8
it and Rip it”. It is target golf at it’s best. With fairway bunkers coming into play on most of the holes it makes golfers think about risk and reward. When you finally get on the green, which many are of different shapes, you will find plenty of undulation and slope. But try not to overthink what you see, because your ball will roll true. So once again, FCG Players will be taking on the challenge of Washington National GC in the 6th Annual FCG Pacific Northwest Championship sponsored by Callaway Golf and Golf Globally on October 2-3, 2021.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GOLF LESSON Written By: Chris Smeal, PGA And Founder Of Future Champions Golf
HOW TO TAKE GOLF LESSONS EFFECTIVELY #1 – Arrive early and fully warm up so you are ready to go. Your coach doesn’t not want you to have to go through your entire warm up routine (if you even have one yet). You should be fully stretched out, have already hit every club in your bag and be ready to take the lesson and learn and improve. #2 – Listen and ask questions if you don’t understand something! #3 – Be strategic in your mind about what you are working on and why. What is the end result? What are you trying to achieve with your golf? Do not just go through the motions. #4 – At the end of the lesson make sure you review what you have worked on and what the next steps are. #5 – Practice immediately following your lesson to reinforce what you worked on with your coach. You should not finish the lesson and get in your car and head home. The best time to practice is immediately following a lesson and immediately following a round of golf. After the lesson make sure you work on what you are doing and your coach taught you how to practice how long you will have to focus on this move. You have to plan to get better. It doesn’t just happen. The Future Champions Golf Academy under direction of Chris Smeal is located at Stadium Golf Center in San Diego. The Academy has produced 87 College Scholarship recipients and over 350 Junior Golf, Professional, Amateur, and College Golf Victories. The program was established in January 2004 and has grown to have 4 coaches and 1,000’s of students annually takes group and private lessons. HOW AWARE ARE YOU DURING YOUR TOURNAMENT ROUNDS? This is something I am constantly reviewing with my students and by discussing the key things good players are AWARE of will help accelerate your development. Here are some examples: COURSE CONDITIONS CHANGING THROUGHOUT THE ROUND Weather Wind Grass Conditions FUEL AND ENERGY LEVEL Hungry Tired Mood ADRENALINE Are you pumped up on the first tee? How about down the stretch? LANDING SPOTS AND GREEN SPEED Knowing where to land your ball when pitching or chipping around the green. Can you tell the putt your about to hit is crazy fast and you barely have to tap it? Stop blowing putts by when the info is right there in front of you. BALL FLIGHT PATTERN CHANGES Are you aware your swing may be changing throughout the round. If you start getting shorten and quicker what happens to the path of your swing? We all have tendencies, learn them and fix them and be aware of them so you can play when it matters the most! TEMPO CHANGES Do you get quick from the top as you get tired? Are you swinging too hard? Are you taking practice swings to feel your tempo and how hard or soft to strike a shot? GRIP PRESSURE Are you squeezing to tight? Later in the round are your hands starting to take over during your swing changing how your swing functions? Now being aware of these things is one thing. How about NOW what are you gonna do about it to manage these things better and be the Tournament Player you want to be? TAKE ACTION! Form a plan and start becoming more aware to play! When you start scoring lower please drop me a line, I would love to hear from you! Get your FCG Tournament Players Booklet Now for just $9.99. A MISSION THAT DRIVES YOU By Dennis Murphy Bryce Bezanson from Snohomish, Washington, is an 18 year old NASCAR Super Late model race car driver, currently attending Grand Canyon University as a freshman in Phoenix Arizona. Bryce is a NEDvocate for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, using his racing platform to raise awareness for the foundation and its mission, to help children with pediatric cancer. Bryce is also a participant in that mission, adopting into the Bryce Bezanson Racing team, 6 year old Holley in April of 2019, as part of the FOJ Adopt a Child program. As soon as Bryce could crawl, he was drawn towards anything with wheels, as many boys are. For his 5th birthday, he was introduced to his first motorized vehicle, a small ATV. He took to it like he had been driving one his whole life, and after he showed similar aptitude that winter on a snowmobile, his uncle, a former Montana state champion Motocross rider, informed Bryce’s father, Jim Bezanson, that he needed to get that boy into some kind of racing. Jim had other plans for Bryce though. Being completely unfamiliar with the racing world, and not knowing where to start, he gravitated Bryce towards more
12
budget friendly activities to fuel Bryce’s competitive nature, such as basketball, golf, and even swimming, which was his former pastime. Despite his best efforts, Bryce had no interest in swimming competitively. He did enjoy other sports, especially golf, but it wasn’t until Bryce was 11 years old when Jim heard about a local quarter midget club in the area, and was able to support Bryce’s true passion. With that, they dove into the world of racing. In the 4 years Bryce raced quarter midgets, he grew and matured. Racing teaches you about overcoming adversity, sportsmanship, dealing with obstacles and disappointment, all in hope of experiencing that rare high of everything coming together at the right time and sitting in victory lane. And with this they discovered how great the racing community is as well, and how they help one another and become an extended family forever. It was during this first year at racing Super Late Models, at the age of 16, that Rod Wortham from Race Face Brand Development, would introduce Bryce to Denis and Jaclyn Murphy, founders of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. They formed a partnership that will likely last throughout Bryce’s racing career and
beyond. And it was through that foundation, in the Spring of 2019, that Bryce met Holley. Holley was coming off of bone marrow transplant surgery in what was her 2nd battle against Leukemia. Bryce and his father met her in Children’s Hospital in Seattle, WA during her recovery, and was surprised to find a tiny, but sassy and witty 6 year old girl, and a warrior mom. They both felt a sense of humility, having no understanding of what it must mean to go through this, as a child, a sibling, or a parent. Their own problems felt small, and as you might expect, gave Bryce a different perspective. How easy it is to take for granted something as simple as your health. Bryce took to Holley and her sister Haley right away. He visited her as often as possible in the hospital, playing games, and still sees her now back in her home at Yakima WA when he is in the area. They have had plenty of adventures together, as simple as going out for ice cream and going to the zoo together, to even giving Holley and Haley the chance to drive a quarter midget around the race track. At first, Bryce just wanted to try to give Holley something to look forward to whenever they had to make the drive to Seattle and spend more time in the hospital. Now, as she is doing better, and able to stay home more, they are just friends. Sometimes that is all that is needed to lift someone’s spirit. Bryce enjoys their time together every bit as much as Holley does. Mention Holley around him and a smirk will come to his face. He is likely remembering something funny she said or did
around him. For Holley, Bryce is the type of friend that can brighten her day. For Bryce, she is an inspirational reminder and example of overcoming hardship and adversity in a way that is difficult to comprehend. We are happy to report that Holley is doing well and is in full remission at this point. But the battle is for life. When you have to battle something like cancer twice before the age of 6, remission is just the first step you hope for. For example, Holley recently had to have her legs broken and straightened, and is re-learning how to walk. It’s not an easy road for a survivor. This is one of the reasons Bryce proudly displays “FOJ” on the hood of his car. He believes in the mission. FOJ has college and high school sports teams anxiously waiting to get involved and adopt a child into their program. But many families are not aware of foundations like this. They don’t have to go through this alone. Spreading awareness is critical to building these relationships. Bryce continues to enjoy golfing when he is not racing and hopes to use his golf platform to help children battling the beast as well. He says golf helps to keep his thoughts organized and helps him stay calm on the race track as the game of golf is an intense mental exercise. Bryce’s favorite golfer is Jordan Speith and his favorite course is St. Andrews. He hopes to play there one day with his dad. Help Bryce and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation by spreading the word, giving to the cause, or reaching out to a family in need.

COMPETE LIKE YOU PRACTICE Do you ever feel like you’re practicing and you’re not seeing the results? I remember times in my golf career when I would be so frustrated because I was putting in the time and practicing for hours every day but I wasn’t seeing any improvement in my spot on the Leaderboard. In practice, I hit the ball straighter. In practice, I made every 3-foot putt. In practice, I never hit a tree limb when I was hitting out from behind a tree. In practice, I would shoot under par on 18 holes frequently.
Article By: Lauren Woodburn Golf Performance Coach Lauren Woodburn Coaching
And even though I was getting better at practice, my results weren’t translating to competition. In my career, I don’t think I ever fully identified the reason for that. But after learning how to understand the brain better and looking back, I know exactly what the difference was. In practice, I played with complete confidence. I was excited to be there, I knew I’d hit shots before and I was just interested to see what I could do because in my mind there were no real consequences. Here’s the thing, in competition there aren’t any real consequences either. There is no reason to be more afraid of hitting a ball in the water or bunker just because you’re playing in a tournament instead of practice. Seriously, what’s the worst that could happen? You lose. You shoot 3 over. People are disappointed with you. Well, you’re already not winning every tournament, so nothing changes. You shoot 3 over occasionally, so nothing changes. People will choose to be disappointed with you whether you win or not, so nothing changes. Do you know what will change? Your ability to bounce back quicker from poor shots. Your heightened confidence when you play. Lower scores as you play from a place of determination instead of fear. How powerful would it be if you could let those fears go and play with complete confidence that come sand or high water, you can win. This my friends is completely possible for you. Notice the thoughts that you think in practice and be intentional about thinking those thoughts in competition. It takes a little work, but it will make all the difference.

FCG FAQ’s At various tournaments throughout the year, the FCG staff will be asked these common questions.
ABOUT FCG How many tournaments does Future Champions Golf hold a year? FCG holds over 100 events across the western states and Texas. This includes three major tournaments, The FCG International, FCG Callaway World Championship and the year-end, FCG National Championship. **Look for exciting news regarding the 2022 season coming out soon! Do college coaches follow FCG? FCG tournaments are a standard recruiting stop for a lot of coaches from Upper DI to DIII Men’s and Women’s teams. It’s not unusual to see over 80 coaches throughout the year at our events. We also email every college coach results of each and every event.
TOURNAMENT PLAY Why doesn’t FCG use “Live Scoring”? Quite simply, we want players to be focused on playing their best. We have found that with current Live Scoring systems in use that utilize cell phones, players have been distracted by texts, social media or even gaming. In some cases players have been coached by texts during play. The yardage that you set up at the tournaments are not the same as they are on the website. Why? The yardages that are posted on the website are there to give the player a general estimate of how long the course will be playing for their division. Part of the development of the junior golfer is having the skill of being able to think and to make adjustments of the given situations. There are many factors that go into the difference of yardages. Here are a few examples: - Basic course maintenance, on a day-to-day basis the course will change the tee area to prevent wear and tear of the tee box. - The tournament committee may change some tees to challenge the players or if some holes will affect pace of play. - The environment will also play a big part. For ex ample if the wind is blowing 30 mph into the player the hole will play longer. If it’s a downwind, the hole will play shorter. Do you set the pins for the tournament? We do not set pins. Instead we allow the course to do so. Courses generally use the formula of six easy, six medium and six hard. We want the course to play as close as we can to what it is rated for. The 12 & under divisions are usually allowed caddies. But why are the caddies not allowed on the
34
putting green? We want the player to develop the skill of putting on their own. Unfortunately, when the caddy is on the green with the player, more often than not, the caddy will be involved in the shot more than the player. What do the initials that are sometimes shown on the leaderboard mean? The initials are to designate the status of a player that was part of a tournament. “JWD” - Justified Withdrawn: A player who is registered to play in a tournament but notifies the committee before the start of the tournament that they will not be playing. “WD” - Withdrawn: When a player has completed their first round and opts not to play the second round. “NC” - No Card: When a player decides not to complete play after starting their round. “DQ” - Disqualification: When a registered player does not show for the tournament without prior notification. Also, a player may be disqualified for an infraction under Rules of Golf.

End of Summer’s FCG San Diego Junior Amateur, a Smashing Success
The San Diego Junior Amateur was originally founded in 2008 as what is now our FCG National Championship played during winter break each year. When we first started the event the San Diego Junior Amateur then named made sense but as the event quickly grew to be one of the world’s largest and most productive events we changed the name. The San Diego Junior Amateur remained dorTmant for many years and in 2019 we brought it back and made it our end of summer big FCG World Series event for the older divisions. The event has been a huge hit since 2019 with some incredible champions. It also has been a great stepping stone for high school graduates headed into their first year of college. In 2019 Hannah Jugar shot -7 to win the Championship and then went on a few weeks later to win her very first college tournament she played in. This year Nathan Sampson shot a second round 62 and then a few weeks later received a scholarship offer from San Diego State University which he accepted. We are very proud of what this event has become and the opportunities it creates. We also have been hosting the event at the beautiful Encinitas Ranch Golf Course which is a coastal golf course with milder temperatures than most venues making it a great end to summer Championship.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP
Ryan Tsukamoto Class of 2022 Playing in two World Series events in the month of August, Ryan posted two Top-3 finishes. Steady performance is nothing new for Ryan though. Prior to those events he’s had six Top-25 finishes which included one Top-3 and three Top5’s over seven events. It won’t be long before he’ll make the climb the climb all of the way to the top. In the meantime, his consistency especially in August, he takes the honor of Player of the Month.
GIRLS COLLEGE PREP
Yeji Kwon Class of 2024 Travelling from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia was happy she made the trek down from across the northern border. Posting a 2nd place finish at the FCG Invitational at La Costa Resort only managed to put a smile on her face. But just a smile wasn’t enough. She wanted more. And more she got, by shooting a 2-day total at the San Diego Junior Amateur for a 5-stroke win. Her exceptional play in the month of August earns her the title of Player of the Month.
