a daily activity, leaving them on while doing other things such as brushing our teeth is a common habit. An average flow of a basin mixer is around 12-13 lt/min, while that of a Bath & Shower mixer is 20-22 lt/min. So, it is essential for the brass fittings to have water saving characteristics. Our Click Technology, a water saving mechanism allowing mixers to function at 50% of their capacity, is a feature applied to basin, bidet, bath and shower, built-in or exposed fittings. Flow regulators that reduce consumption by more than 50%, irrespective of the water pressure, high or low, is another characteristic, which makes using Ideal Standard fittings both ecological and economical, all the while enjoying impeccable performance thanks to their ability to mix air with water resulting in a full, bubbly stream. In case of public areas, we can also meet the prerequisite of going below 2 lt/min for basin mixers, using special regulators. Our thermostats are equipped with Eco-stop function allowing reduction of water consumption by 50%. When one turns the handle to increase water volume, a resistance mechanism caps the water flow permitting it to reach its half potential. If you need a more powerful shower, you simply must press an override button. Our Thermostats

waste not one unnecessary drop of water, while the user is trying to find the right temperature, because he can preset to just the right temperature, which remains constant throughout the shower. Showering: Idealrain Shower Systems & kits When it comes to showering products the objective is to offer maximum pleasure at minimum consumption. With a precision-designed flow engine, all Idealrain handsprays deliver optimal spray performance at high or low pressure, and the additional, easily-fitted and removed flow regulator reduces water consumption in high-pressure systems from 18.5 to just 8 lt/min with no loss of flow. For even more demanding cases an option of 6 lt/min regulator is also available. Idealrain Systems and Rainshowers allow you to indulge in the all-enveloping sensation of standing in a warm, relaxing downpour, whilst saving precious water. When a regular rainshower delivers 20 to 25 lt/min, Idealrain Rainshowers achieve excellent performance at 12 lt/min. For more strict cases and in accordance to Estidama and other building set of rules for showering, we provide a 9 lt/min version.

E

nvironmental awareness is one of DORMA’s maxims. DORMA understands sustainability not only as short-term trend, but as indispensable long-term company orientation. At DORMA we practice sustainability with our energy-saving and resource-conserving production methods, a high recycling ratio, the longevity and quality of our products and social responsibility towards our employees. New processes and products are introduced on the basis of strict criteria governing quality, ecological acceptability and occupational health and safety. We ensure compliance with our values, mission, vision and strategy through the implementation of corresponding management systems and associated processes. DORMA believes that there is an important need for an agreed system for products to be tested by a third party as there is a common misunderstanding in the industry that LEED/ BREEAM, or similar, certified products exist. They don’t, the ratings are purely for buildings and neighbourhoods. That is why the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) offers constructors a clear a clear environmental rating for individual products and DORMA has made great progress in obtaining EPDs for its products.

DORMA believes that there is an important need for an agreed system for products to be tested by a third party as there is a common misunderstanding in the industry that LEED/ BREEAM, or similar, certified products exist. They don’t, the ratings are purely for buildings and neighbourhoods.

DORMA offers EPDs for door closers systems, sliding door systems, door furniture, lock/master key systems and movable walls. As one of the first companies, DORMA received to the existing EPD ED 100/900 and ED 250, the recognition by the American program holder Underwriters Laboratories (UL). UL is an American company in the field of product testing and safety sciences and is one of the most important EPD program holders in the United States. With the mutual recognition of UL and the IBU (an institute for construction and environment) DORMA has the opportunity to publish EPDs not only on the European but also on the American market to guarantee a greater global coverage. The aim of the mutual recognition is to create global transparency regarding environmental and health characteristics for products and buildings. The quality of buildings can be improved and increased. For DORMA, a manufacturer of door technologies for buildings, this is an important initiative to support such requirements of international building certification systems such as LEED.

committed to fulfill the requirements of green buildings. Our business strategy is to provide holistic green building solutions covering the entire life cycle of infrastructure projects and including recourseconserving use, environmentally friendly materials and efficient energy management. For CCC, ideally, the incorporation of sustainable building features, regardless of the green building rating system intended to be applied, should be initiated in the early design and planning stages of a project. Early design coordination minimizes the risk of costly time consuming changes throughout the construction phase, and enables a more focused transition between design and construction. Regarding construction efficiency, and thus cost, it is beneficial to start considering the sustainability implications as early as possible. It is known that, sustainable building design is founded on the belief that early coordination and communication between trades and designers can increase the value of the project without substantially increasing cost. Following the life-cycle principle of sustainability, this coordination must be carried forward through the construction phase of the project. CCC’s approach towards successfully implementing any green building rating system is primarily based on a consolidated coordination and documentation effort. The targeting and monitoring of compliance largely boils down to communication and periodic verification

CCC Headquarters in Oman We wanted our new corporate headquarters in Oman to demonstrate our commitment to sustainable building practices. Therefore, CCC’s new offices in Muscat are being constructed in accordance to the standards of green design and technology and aiming for a minimum LEED-2009 certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). When complete, CCC’s headquarters will be one of the first LEED certified buildings in Muscat. The project is a model for sustainable and economic development, which minimizes environmental impact and seeks to restore ecological resources. Aiming for certification, CCC applied and included many environmentally friendly elements, related to: energy and water efficiency, recycling and indoor environmental quality. Sustainability Initiatives We value the environment in which we operate and strive to relentlessly protect it, therefore we apply initiatives to mitigate our environmental impact. At our projects, camps and offices CCC follows a meticulous sustainability strategy underpinned by detailed practices in the fields of energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energy and overall environmental responsibility. Some of our applied measures include: solar power plants, PV powered lighting systems, wastewater treatment plants and recycling construction materials. CCC has been internationally recognized for its dedication to sustainable development and green economy. Specifically, it received the 2015 Gold Award for “Energy Efficiency-Private Sector” from the Dubai

Supreme Council of Energy. The award was conferred in recognition of the initiatives applied at construction camps and site facilities of CCC projects in UAE (Habshan) and Qatar (Qusahwira). The Emirates Energy Award honors best practices and business leaders in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainability. Once again, CCC is confirming its worldwide leadership in construction this time by setting the example as a responsible corporate citizen. Formal corporate procedures endorse the sustainability momentum. For example, CCC’s official manual regulating camp operations defines the framework of sustainability within the organization, and provides guidance towards achieving relevant goals. Sustainability awareness and education We have adopted an internal formal commitment to environmentally sound building practices. A structured knowledge framework has been developed to increase awareness, enable learning and drive behavior change among CCC employees. noraplan® nTx - The Next Generation of Flooring

n

oraplan® nTx is a revolutionary new product advancement engineered and provided exclusively by nora systems. noraplan nTx offers a unique, highly simplified, less time consuming and significant cost saving, resilient flooring option. A simple concept, noraplan nTx is noraplan® sheet flooring with a pre-applied, solvent-free self-adhesive. With the ever increasing number of flooring options available for countless application areas, making a flooring selection has become more and more challenging. Until now... Understanding the time restraints you are under, the cost measures that sometimes need to be taken and the impact of the final outcome of your project, all drove the development of noraplan nTx. Time and money are often the most influential considerations when selecting a flooring material, and with the introduction of noraplan nTx, those two factors have been addressed for you.

14

No RH or pH Testing In many flooring construction projects, moisture is often the enemy. Not only testing for moisture, but actually taking measures to ensure the existing moisture will not present any installation issues in the future. With noraplan nTx, the need for moisture testing is eliminated. Why? Simply because noraplan nTx does not have any moisture or pH limits. The days of costly testing and time delays are no longer a factor in your construction schedule. Minimal Components In traditional flooring installations where moisture issues exist, there are many pieces and parts that are necessary to ensure a dry surface is available for the flooring installation. The more pieces and parts that exist, the potential points of failure increase and liability between different manufacturers becomes unclear. noraplan nTx eliminates all of the complexity, confusion and “what-if’s”. Plasterboard Recycling for Sustainable Construction

S

aint Gobain’ Gyproc’s expertise has helped to build the places in which we live, work and play for almost 100 years. We are immensely proud of this and of our reputation as a trusted and much-loved brand. We are here to help improve the spaces in every kind of building – from homes to offices to hotels, hospitals and schools. Environmental Awareness and Sustainability has always been at the heart of everything we do and effective Waste Management is a priority for us. From initial design to on-site testing, through to manufacturing and installation – we’ve always believed that effective waste management makes good environmental and good business sense. A Unique Approach As a manufacturing company, we help build the environments that are an essential part of everyday life. Minimising the effects that construction projects have on the environment is an important part of our activities.

16

We believe the most effective way to encourage best practice, is to make the building process sustainable for business AND for the environment. We now recycle over 96% of the waste produced from our own manufacturing processes. The remaining elements are also disposed of via responsible routes, such as animal bedding and soil conditioning. A programme of external activity, helping the construction industry reduce its impact on the environment, has also been implemented to match our internal commitment. Producers of gypsum waste are now advised to: Eliminate waste before it enters construction sites. Reduce the amount of waste produced to an absolute minimum. Reuse off-cuts of plasterboard or surplus raw materials. Recycle and re-process waste that is not suitable for immediate reuse. Dispose of any waste that cannot be reused or recycled responsibly and only use landfill as a last resort.

The gypsum core is blended with natural gypsum. The resulting raw material is then tested for quality before re-entering the manufacturing process.

Gyproc is Here to Help We’re on-hand to help you meet the new guidance requirements in the most cost effective way possible – by designing products that minimise waste, and by recycling plasterboard waste quickly and efficiently. Our plasterboard recycling service is based on the principles of simplicity and reliability. We received approval from Tadweer for plasterboard recycling in 2015 and are the only company in the UAE to do so. We offer cradle-to-cradle services so waste doesn’t go to a landfill rather it is recycled and used in our boards and this service continues to expand year-on-year. We also provide comprehensive feedback on the waste we recycle. Our system records the total tonnage of waste for a project, the average weight per bag or skip, along with other factors – allowing you to see the

financial savings compared to less environmentally sound options. Everybody Benefits We offer our customers in the UAE the ability to recycle plasterboard waste and off-cuts that are generated during the construction phase. In doing so we divert waste that historically would have endedup in landfill sites, thus helping to preserve the city’s environment. At the same time we help developers and contractors gain points or credits under the Estidama, LEED, and QSAS Green Building Codes in both, the waste management category, and by providing them with products that have a higher recycled content. New regulations, and the drive to increase efficiency, mean that sharing best practice is crucial to the success of the construction industry. With the help of Gyproc, the application of improved building techniques has resulted in significant success for many construction firms. Our support team is always on-hand to help customers identify efficiencies and maximise savings. We can help calculate the true cost of waste to a project – and find ways to reduce it at every stage of the building process. Lastly, it is the end users of the living and working spaces who also benefit by leaving a smaller carbon footprint on Mother Earth. For further information and benefits, customers with sites in the UAE that are using Gyproc plasterboard can contact: 800 GYPROC (497762).

chains of insulation manufacturing can have an all-tooeasy-to-ignore impact on a business’ sustainability performance. Manufacturers should be conscious about what they are putting into their insulation as much as they are about where it is going to. The certification applies to Kingspan Kooltherm, KoolDuct, Therma and Cavity Closer products manufactured at Pembridge and Selby, UK, manufacturing facilities. Product Overview The Kingspan Kooltherm range is produced in Kingspan Insulation’s manufacturing facilities across Europe: Pembridge and Glossop, U.K; Castle Blayney, Ireland; Tiel, Netherlands; and Turnhout, Belgium. Following the growing success of the product, the manufacturing of Kingspan Kooltherm is also expanding into the Australian site and should begin production in 2017. Kingspan Kooltherm insulation can be used for a range of applications. For the building envelope, it can be used in a floor, soffit, External Insulation Finishing System and insulated cladding façade. It can also be used in building services applications for insulating ductwork and pipework. Kingspan Kooltherm is a premium performance range of fibre-free, closed cell, phenolic insulation, which has the lowest thermal conductivity of any commonly used insulation material, at as low as 0.020 W/m.K. Kingspan Kooltherm insulation solutions have been installed into many projects across the Gulf, such as the Burj Al Arab, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. Additionally, over 7,000 m2 of Kingspan Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board was installed on the Emirates Stadium in London, UK. wall insulation. However, Kingspan Kooltherm can meet these due to its low lambda value and outstanding fire performance. Tech Specs and Efficiencies In a recent study, Mott MacDonald used Kingspan’s Insulation solutions to measure the positive impact of improving U-value specifications over and above local regulations implemented across the Gulf. Kingspan’s Insulation solutions were found to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in all 1,744 calculations and, in some instances, can produce a Return on Investment of over 6,500%. Raising the development costs of a construction is always a difficult decision. However, specifiers can now be assured that these decisions can results in remarkable ROI’s.

In addition to its advanced lambda value, Kingspan Kooltherm has a wide range of third party fire certification attached to it, such as FM approvals, for duct, pipe and soffit insulation. The whole range also achieves a Class 1 (A) when tested to ASTM E 84. More specifically, Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Cladding Board has been tested in large scale fire test BS8414-1 and BS8414-2 and is in accordance with the performance criteria set out in BR 135. The success of Kingspan Kooltherm can be put down to the U-value and fire regulations across the globe becoming much more strict. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more difficult to meet the evergrowing list of specifications for insulation, and in particular, external

TROX x-cube: A revolution in modern air technology

T By Sami Akaydin, Technical Consultant, TROX Middle East

ROX is the global market leader in the development, manufacture and sale of components, devices and systems for the ventilation and air conditioning industry. With subsidiary companies in 28 countries on all five continents, 14 production facilities, and importers and representatives, TROX is present in over 70 countries. The spectrum of solutions is accordingly broad. Products and solutions are developed in close co-operation with the clients that combine energy efficiency, which is essential both from the ecological and from an economic point of view, with very high comfort and excellent functionality. Trox has won the Climate Control Award as best manufacturer, 2 years in a row for 2014 and 2015 and was also nominated for the GAIA awards 2015 which shows how much our direction towards sustainability is being recognized by clients and contractors alike. This is why superior energy efficiency was the guiding concept in the development of the X-CUBE.

Construction, insulation, low leakage, heat recovery, energy-efficient motors, and intelligent control systems work in tandem to provide levels of energy efficiency which not only meet but already exceed the existing and future requirements of the EC directive on energy-related products. With the special shape of the casing, the smooth surfaces, and the way in which the components are installed, the X-CUBE complies with the VDI 6022 guideline. Even the high-quality standard version meets the very critical hygiene requirements of the DIN 1946/4 standard. A special hygiene unit that complies with AHU Guideline 01 is available for the most demanding requirements. The air-handling unit (AHU) has always been the workhorse of the HVAC world. Whilst renewable energy devices and sophisticated control technology scooped awards for reducing carbon footprint of commercial buildings, the AHU kept working away behind the scenes. But in today’s environment, where only outstanding levels of sustainability are acceptable for the UAE’s most prestigious projects, this has all changed.

trox

In the move towards significantly reduced energy consumption, the X-Cube is firmly on the frontline, delivering energy savings that were simply not available to system designers just a year ago. The solution has set the bar high when it comes to manufacturing quality, energy efficiency, flexibility of unit configurations, functional reliability and hygiene. Matthias Kasprowicz, Regional Managing Director, TROX MIddle East.

TROX has developed from a component manufacturer and systems supplier to a company with “one-stop-shop” solutions. The level of interaction between various technical building services can make or break the whole system. This is why TROX offers everything from a single source. Its air handling units and ventilation components and systems complement each other perfectly. This results in maximum energy efficiency while the coordination effort during the design and installation stages for a project is reduced to a minimum. With the introduction of the innovative X-CUBE air handling units, TROX has set the benchmark for these products on the market. The proposed solution has set the bar high when it comes to manufacturing quality, energy efficiency, flexibility of unit configurations, functional reliability and hygiene. The same high standards apply to all product types in the portfolio. In the move towards significantly reduced energy consumption, the X-Cube is firmly on the frontline, delivering energy savings that were simply not available to system designers just a year ago. This is due to the fact that the X-Cube has recently been reinvented from the ground up. After a number of years of incremental improvements, the tweaking and tinkering stopped and every aspect of the design and construction of the X-Cube was approached with a clean slate. So what impact has this had? Four key areas have seen significant advances: • Motor efficiency • Filter design/performance • Physical construction • Single source compatibility

The low specific fan powers have been achieved in TROX X-CUBE AHUs with plug fans with an IE2 motor, and IE4 permanent magnet motors which ensure high efficiency even under partial loads. The aerodynamically profiled steel or plastic fan blades achieve the highest efficiency with the lowest noise level. The AHUs also incorporate EUROVENT energy Class A minipleat filters which reduce energy consumption considerably. Air filters are, of course, a necessary and compulsory requirement in air conditioning systems, however, the inevitable trade-off when employing particle or particulate filtration is increasing system resistance. It is estimated that 85 per cent of the costs produced by an air filter are energy costs accrued during operation, but recent developments in filter technology are improving efficiency. One of the 19 certification programs run by EUROVENT provides a scheme for independent testing and grading of filters. TROX is one of fourteen manufacturers taking part in the scheme, and the filters incorporated in the X-CUBE

design perform at the highest level designated by the standard. These components contribute to the AHU’s ability to exceed SFP targets for the unit whilst ensuring effective filtration. Energy efficiency performance is also assisted by the construction of the AHU cabinet. A seamless foam seal on each panel ensures the low leakage class is maintained, and this type of construction also removes the internal framing which in turn drops the resistance through the unit, further reducing the SFP of the unit. The panels and frames are also fixed using screws rather than permanent fixings, enabling unit sections to be dismantled and reassembled on site should greater access be required. Prefabrication was high on the agenda from the outset of the project, with both the designer and construction partner identifying this intention from the start. As TROX supplied the full air handling system, opportunities for prefabrication could be optimized, with improved compatibility of equipment throughout the system, for more effective operation and energy efficiency.

Taking light beyond illumination

A

t Philips we see three megatrends that will shape the market: the need for more light, more energy efficient light and more digital light. More than 70 per cent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050. As urban population increases, there will be a corresponding rise in energy demand. Therefore a need for innovation to deliver energy efficient resources is considerable. Globally speaking, we estimate that almost 75 per cent of all current urban lighting is inefficient and have identified that there are considerable gains to make by switching to LED. At Philips we predict a saving of 8 per cent of global energy use through widespread adoption of LED. In an increasingly digitized world, we also anticipate connected lighting solutions to deliver an additional impact to the community, especially businesses. Our mission at Philips Lighting is to improve people’s lives with meaningful lighting innovations as well as boosting efficiency and cost savings. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are at the forefront of a resurgent GCC lighting sector, according to global consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan. We predict much of this growth to come from the considerable number of infrastructure projects across the region. In light with

24

this strategy, Dubai aims to reduce its demand for energy by 30 per cent by 2030. Similarly, Abu Dhabi City Municipality is to roll out the next stage of its ambitious plan to cut the total cost of public lighting by 60-75 per cent over the next two decades. Demand for smart and energy efficient solutions have seen a boost following the publication of Dubai’s Green Building Regulations mandatory for all private developments with effect from 1 March 2014. Green Building is no longer just a nice to have, it has become an essential. Significant savings are possible – up to 80 per cent for individual applications and 40 per cent on average – by switching to energy-efficient LED lighting solutions. And there are other initiatives that support Dubai in their vision to become the most sustainable city in the world. 2016 marks almost two years since the UAE’s indoor lighting regulation came into effect for the industry, designed to phase out incandescent lightbulbs. Philips is supporting Dubai Municipality in the transformation of the 262 buildings from conventional lighting infrastructure to energy efficient LED based solutions, in order to reduce its energy consumption from lighting by more than 50 per cent. Currently 15 buildings are retrofitted, resulting in a total of 57 per cent of energy savings,

Philips

Delivering innovation that enhances life with light, Philips is committed to introduce new products, systems, services and partnerships that further integrate lighting into the Internet of Things (IoT). along with positive feedback from the employees of the Dubai Municipality on the improved quality of the lighting, which was said to have created a more ambient and vibrant space. Philips was chosen by Etihad ESCO as lighting partner to refurbish Dubai Water and Electricity Authority’s (DEWA)’s Jebel Ali and Al Awir Power Plants with LED lighting solutions (both indoor and outdoor), promising to deliver guaranteed energy savings of 68 per cent - equivalent to 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions savings. The project, spanning a total of five years was split into two phases. The first - execution and installation - was completed in 2015, and the second – maintenance - is ongoing and consists of maintaining lighting levels, quality and fixtures. According to the latest reading presented by Etihad ESCO however, Philips lighting system remarkably achieved energy savings of 75per cent. It also reached up to an estimated 6,300 tonnes of CO2 emission reduction and 15 GWh energy savings a year, exceeding its targets. The project won the accolade for Industrial and Transport Lighting Project of the Year at this year’s Lux Awards Middle East that celebrated excellence in lighting and brought together the world’s leading lighting brands, specifiers and key decision makers. Delivering innovation that enhances life with light, Philips is committed to introduce new products, systems, services and partnerships that further integrate lighting into Internet of Things (IoT) enabling its customers to create new experiences and unlock new value from lighting solutions, through capabilities and services that go beyond illumination. Philips Lighting with Cisco is helping to create more comfortable, sustainable and productive environments that benefit building owners, facility managers and office workers. The team is integrating connected lighting into the IoT for offices through a combination of Philips Power over Ethernet (PoE) connected lighting systems

with Cisco’s secure IT networking infrastructure. Philips is currently working with retailer aswaaq on its Al Bada’a supermarket in Dubai to install a new system that uses luminaires that act as a positioning system which allows customers to use smartphones to access new location based services. The system works by the individual light points transmitting their location through a modulation of light (a technology called Visible Light Communication) that is imperceptible to the human eye but detected by the customer’s smart phone camera. Once the customer downloads the retailer’s app they can choose to access location-based services, such as locate items on their shopping list to an accuracy of 30cm. The data stream is one-way and no personal data is collected by the lighting system. aswaaq will benefit from a 50 per cent reduction in lightingbased energy consumption, maintenance cost savings and a

reduction in its carbon footprint. At the same time, aswaaq customers will benefit from navigating its aisles more easily and accessing new services via their smartphones. Such a foray into IoT is set to unlock even more value for customers. Outfitted with integrated sensors, each luminaire is increasingly equipped to be a point of intelligence that can share information on occupancy, activity patterns, and changes in temperature or humidity, and daylight levels. Connected lighting gives greater customer insight, allows for superior customer experience, creates personalized workspaces, and adds a layer of intelligence to the environment which responds and adapts to people’s preferences and needs. With our sophisticated lighting management software, operators of spaces can monitor and manage the lighting system in real time. Taking light beyond illumination, connected lighting not only saves energy but automates, informs, and inspires a whole new way of life.
