foreword LOOKING
The Future Dreams mission truly gained momentum this year, with the launch of our £5 million Future Dreams Haven Appeal and partnership with The Haven to create the largest Central London breast cancer support centre. We are thrilled to announce that we are currently heading towards our first million!
Future Dreams continues to nurture and work with an inspiring group of entrepreneurs, patrons, ambassadors, friends and doctors, all driven by the same dream, that no one should face breast cancer alone. With the support of Shimon Bokova, CEO of SushiSamba brand management, we hosted the ultimate party in the sky on the 38th and 39th floors of his stunning landmark London restaurant. The evening’s heady mix of exotic cocktails, live music and a superb, unique Art and Live Auction set our appeal off to a flying start, raising £360,000 on the night. Launched in February this year, The Future Dreams Swimwear Collection in collaboration with our talented brand Ambassador, internationally renowned swimwear designer, Melissa Odabash, was another wonderful highlight. The range sold out on Net-a-Porter, stocked at Fenwick Bond Street and sold worldwide. Our aim to enable women to feel confident and glamorous post-surgery was achieved.
Our ongoing #Brickappeal Campaign in association with the Global Charity Trust, has to date recruited over 50 ‘Builders’, bringing in another £250,000 to our appeal, and revealing another successful start to a unique hands-on initiative. To achieve our £5 million goal we need to recruit 1000 builders, so grab your brick today and join our crusade! The determination, strength and resilience of the women in our pledge video, all breast cancer sufferers, and the bravery of our founders, compound and galvanise our commitment to this fundraising mission.
One way to keep momentum going is to have great goals; watch this space for 2016! With love and gratitude always

NO ONE SHOULD FACE BREAST CANCER ALONE OUR
story
The Future Dreams Charity was established in 2008 to raise money for breast cancer research. To date over £2 million has been raised, the majority of which has been donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer research. Future Dreams was founded by Danielle Leslie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, and her mother, Sylvie Henry, was also diagnosed at a very young age. Both dancers, with a passionate love of ballet and theatre, Sylvie and Danielle decided to raise money by producing a celebrity variety performance at the Savoy Theatre in London. The event was so successful that it led to two further shows. Tragically, both Sylvie and Danielle lost their battles against breast cancer within a year of each other. However, their legacy lives on and continues to grow, working towards fulfilling their dream to strive for a future free of breast cancer.
OUR
mission
Future Dreams is devoted to raising vital funds for breast cancer support and research
RESEARCH - Future Dreams continues to raise funds for Professor Clare Isacke’s laboratory at Breast Cancer Now Research Centre, London, specialising in research into secondary breast cancer. SUPPORT - Our mission is to raise £5 million pounds in order to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven, central London’s Haven support centre. This landmark building will provide free one-to-one emotional and physical support and therapies to improve the lives of anyone affected by breast cancer.

is a place on earth THE HAVEN
Interview with the inspiring CEO of The Haven, Pam Healey OBE, giving her insight into ‘The Haven’ and its partnership with Future Dreams
How many other Havens do you have in the country? We currently have three Haven centres located in West London, Leeds and Hereford. A new centre which will serve the Wessex region is opening in Hampshire this October. It is our aim to have ten centres in operation by 2025. This expansion of our breast cancer support service supports our vision to help as many people as possible affected by breast cancer. Why/how is The Haven different to anything else? The Haven is the only charity that offers free, personalised emotional and physical support to people affected by breast cancer.
A PARTNERSHIP:
“Both Future Dreams and The Haven strongly believe that people suffering from breast cancer shouldn’t have to face it alone.” Tell us about your collaboration with the NHS. We’re excited about a new partnership with the NHS in Worcester which is opening a new state-of-the art breast unit later in the year. We will be running a Haven service one day a week from this new unit as a year-long pilot project. This is an entirely new model of operation for us and we hope it will go a long way in helping to meet the needs of breast cancer patients in a location that is convenient for them. Please elaborate on how the centre not only helps women but also their families dealing with cancer. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is devastating and
18 | SUPPORT IN THE CITY

21/09/2015 17:47
traumatic and it also has a huge impact on the families and close friends of that individual. Recognising this, The Haven is able to provide free counselling to help them come to terms with a relative or close friend’s diagnosis. How does The Haven help sufferers financially? The Haven works in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support which enables us to employ an adviser who offers high quality information on welfare benefits and money advice. This adviser can help cancer patients check their entitlement to State benefits and help claim any benefits to which they are entitled to. This includes help with form-filling, appealing and negotiating on their behalf. What other complementary therapies do you offer to meet their individual needs? We offer a wide range of complementary therapies which help to address both emotional and physical issues. Amongst the most popular are counselling, massage, acupuncture, reflexology and nutrition. Is Fulham Haven bursting at the seams? How many women use this centre? The Fulham Haven is busy but we are able to manage our visitor numbers without having to resort to long waiting lists. We have around 700 new visitors each year but that doesn’t take into account the repeat visits of existing clients, many of whom visit us several times for their course of ten free treatments. How essential is it for a second Haven to open to help women in North, Central and East London? London is a big place and we want to help as many people as possible affected by breast cancer. If you live in North, Central or East London, making a journey to Fulham can be barrier if you are undergoing treatment and not feeling well. Being able to serve other parts of London is an absolute priority for us.
What role does nutrition play at the centre? A healthy, balanced diet, with plenty of fresh seasonal vegetables and some fruit, plays an important part in a patient’s recovery from treatment. It also contributes to a healthier lifestyle in the long-term. We have qualified nutritionists who can give practical suggestions to help improve our visitors’ diets. This helps to maintain a healthy weight, boost natural defences and increase energy levels. Eating healthily can also boost mental and emotional wellbeing by supporting the health of the brain and nervous system. It can give back a sense of control and positive involvement in people’s recovery. What do you think of Future Dreams? I have deep admiration and respect for Future Dreams and their fundraising achievements. To have raised such impressive amounts of money for breast cancer research and support is no mean feat in the current economic climate. Their successes are even more poignant when you consider that the reason they exist is to honour the memory and wishes of their dear friends, Sylvie and Danielle, who both sadly lost their battles with breast cancer. Future Dreams has certainly created a legacy for these two women. How is Future Dreams House an extension of The Haven in Fulham? Both Future Dreams and The Haven strongly believe that people suffering from breast cancer shouldn’t have to face it alone and that they should be able to access the help and support they need to get them through the toughest challenge of their lives. To open a new facility in London is a fantastic opportunity for our charity and we couldn’t be doing it without the help of such a dynamic fundraising charity as Future Dreams. Why have you enjoyed working with the Future Dreams team? What do you think of the Brick Appeal events? Future Dreams are a joy to work with. They have so much energy and enthusiasm for the cause and you have to remember they all give up their precious time to pursue their goals. We are extremely grateful to receive their support and are very excited about the Brick Appeal campaign which is such a great fundraising concept. The drinks parties that I’ve been to have all been great fun and really well attended. Everyone that I have spoken to at these events has expressed such enthusiasm for the cause. I’m sure the campaign will go from strength to strength. FUTUREDREAMS.ORG.UK | 19

FUTURE DREAMS HOUSE
A PARTNERSHIP:
“With your help we are aiming to fulfil our dream of opening Future Dreams House by 2018.”
Future Dreams is partnering with The Haven to support people living with breast cancer. Future Dreams is now London’s most dynamic breast cancer fundraising charity and has chosen to partner with The Haven which is the only National charity to provide free one-to-one emotional and physical support to improve the lives of anyone affected by breast cancer. Together we will build the ‘Future Dreams House’, a landmark centre in the heart of the new Kings Cross development, specialising in breast cancer, which will look after sufferers and their families.

The Haven is leading the way in the field of complementary breast cancer support by offering in-depth and individually tailored programmes of care to people affected by breast cancer. Working in partnership with the NHS and other charities, they aim to help people live well, with and beyond breast cancer. The Haven intends to expand into areas of the country where there is an acute need for its services. London remains the major national hub for breast cancer treatment and The Haven has long-recognised the need to expand its services in the capital. Currently there is only one Londonbased Haven Centre, located in Fulham, and over half of the women who visit this centre have to travel across London to access its services. The NHS is overstretched and although it provides excellent medical treatment for breast cancer patients, The Haven fills the void which is often left when medical treatment ends.
“When a woman is first diagnosed with breast cancer a whole gammut of emotions is running through her mind; terrified, helpless, rudderless, and when they come to see me for that first time, the information about their diagnosis is overwhelming. Future Dreams House offers the opportunity for patients to go to a beautiful facility, but it’s not just about the building, it’s the people in it, people with real expertise who can offer truly complementary care in an environment of calm, kindness and empathy.” – Professor Paul Ellis, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Future Dreams Medical Trustee
“Future Dreams house is not just for myself and ladies who go through breast cancer, but for their children, their families, and their friends, because it doesn’t just affect me.” –A manda Starr, aged 44 breast cancer survivor

“I didn’t have anyone to talk to and the Haven really helped me. I know the new Future Dreams House will help me and others in my age range. I’m excited by this.” Jodie Marks, aged 26, breast cancer survivor
“It has been a place where I can concentrate on myself while going through the trauma of diagnosis and treatment. Without The Haven it would have been such a lonely experience.” Jane Hutchinson, aged 38 breast cancer survivor
Our mission and goal is to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven, in the heart of the new Kings Cross Development. This will support 14 NHS hospitals and the private HCA hospitals including Princess Grace and London Clinic to name a few in central London and North and East London for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

together remarkable WE CAN ACHIEVE SOMETHING
On 1st January 2015 London’s most dynamic breast cancer charity rolled out its biggest initiative to date – The Future Dreams #BRICKAPPEAL campaign Since then the committee has devoted just about every waking hour to ensuring the success of this ambitious initiative, hosting a myriad of events everywhere from the Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill and Salmontini, Belgravia to the Café Royal, Piccadilly and The Haven restaurant in Whetsone. Over the course of the last three months, the team has met some incredible and dynamic women and men, many of whom have had their lives touched in some way by this dreadful disease.

The premise behind the campaign is a pretty simple one: each ‘builder’ or groups of ‘builders’ have to sell 250 luxury prize draw bricks, each worth £20, to their friends, colleagues, family members – in fact everyone in their little black book! Each brick will then be entered into The Prize Draw, offering the individual an opportunity to win some fantastic and unique prizes. All of the money raised will go towards the £5 million needed to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven. By 2018 the proposed centre will offer the women of North, East and Central London suffering from the effects of breast cancer a free, multi-faceted and accessible support centre. The Future Dreams committee is lucky enough to be working alongside organisations such as The Global Charity Trust, created by David Johnstone, CEO and Founder of the Free Holdings Group, and fellow trustee Lord Stanley Fink, which has provided a range of amazing aspirational prizes, including dinners for two at London’s best restaurants and overnight stays at exclusive spas. This renowned worldwide charity continually helps to raise funds and awareness from small to large projects focusing on health, education, vulnerable children, the environment and animal welfare. At every event we are joined by a representative from the original Haven in Fulham. With this facility so oversubscribed, they know better than anyone the difference it would make to so many lives to have a second Haven in the capital. So far we have raised just over £200,000 and our empowering builders are continuing with their amazing efforts. Every builder who raises £5,000 will be acknowledged on the visionary wall in the main entrance of Future Dreams House. unique luxury prizes.

Your work celebrates the beauty of women of all ages, especially those often ignored and marginalized older women. What made you want to depict these subjects? From the beginning, it was more about painting these specific women, my aunties, than the fact that they are a certain age. I have alway been aware of how narrow our viewpoint is on beauty, and struggled with it, but the project started from a much more personal place of just wanting to paint these wonderfully wild women who raised me.

In some of the paintings there is a playfulness, almost infantilizing the women – do you believe that we are all ageless? It’s more that I don’t believe that our biological age should define our actions. Are you challenging our preconceptions of what ‘age’ means and its boundaries and constrictions? I hope so. Or at least shedding light on the fact that we have a choice in where our boundaries are. The body is the only thing that gets old. All too often we let that dictate how we live.
knowing the person I am painting can bring a sense of intimacy to the viewer. It’s not just that they are seeing this person through my eyes, but the person - the subject of the painting - is seeing me, so our relationship and any history we share can come through in the final piece.
Would you describe yourself as a feminist? And if so what does that mean to you? Yes, but I think its definition has changed over time. What it means to me is that I am a person who gets to choose the life that I want to live. It’s less about being female and more about being an individual with choice. I know that without the feminist movement, that statement would never be able to exist. It’s an incredible thing to be able to define that word for ourselves and it speaks to the power of feminism.
Your paintings are absolutely beautiful. There is a luminescence as though the inner light of the subject dictates the light within the painting. Why do you often choose to paint your subjects within a landscape? I often don’t know whether a figure will be in a landscape or not when I begin. It really changes the mood of a painting, and sometimes mood is the very reason I will paint the figure in a landscape. It’s really exciting to be able to subtly shift the feeling of a figure through the world around them, whether a field of purple flowers or pure white.
Having just had a son myself I particularly associate with ‘Lucy and Lazlo’, depicting the unbridled joy and bond between mother and child. How do you choose your subjects? How does intimately knowing your subject affect the outcome of the portrait? Sometimes I choose the people I paint, asking them if they will pose for me, and other times they offer. It has been said that by being an artist you get to show people how you see the world. This is true in the sense that
Future Dreams believes in supporting survivorship and that is our focus with our Future Dreams Haven Appeal, to open the largest breast cancer support centre in Central London. Can you tell us the story behind ‘Shanti and Heather’ and your experience of depicting such an important and sensitive subject? Heather, the woman with the mastectomy was just one of the women, confident and living in her body in such a real way. What I wanted to get at in this painting is that she is a woman first. The fact that she is also a cancer survivor, while of course very important, is only part of her life. She is so much more than the scar. I wanted to show her strength and resilience as a person. The women are always nude – do you feel the naked body tells the story of the life and achievements of the women you paint? Yes. We say so much through the clothes we wear, but underneath, we all have a body. We can’t hide our truth this way, and we can all connect to the universal feelings of being in a body. For me, you are reclaiming the female nude – throughout the History of Art the female nude is associated with sexuality and voyeurism – was it a conscious decision to celebrate nudity in such a different way? Yes it was very deliberate, but I didn’t really know how I would do it. I just knew that not all nakedness had to be either sexual or demeaning. It means so much to me that the work has found a way around this narrow lens, and that the paintings can speak to people about so much more of what it means to be human.

Why did you decide to become a breast surgeon? I first knew I wanted to be a doctor at kindergarten. I decided to be a surgeon when I went to medical school. Approximately 10% of Consultant surgeons at the Royal College of Surgeons are women. I was acutely aware that to manage a surgical career and a family was going to be a challenge. Breast surgery was a good balance as there are urgent operations but rarely true emergencies. I also recognised that this was an area where female patients may prefer a female surgeon. Explain the journey of a breast cancer patient before, during and after diagnosis. Each individual’s cancer diagnosis and journey will be different. There should be no set pathway in the modern era of personalised care. During the assessment, diagnostic and active treatment phase of each patient’s pathway they are seen regularly by myself and the extended multi-disciplinary team. As we complete their treatment, patients will still come to the hospital for clinical review and imaging, but the time between appointments becomes longer. This is often the first time that patients have a chance to reflect on their diagnosis and treatment. I recently reviewed one of my younger patients. She was in her early 20s when she was diagnosed and has a young family, three children under six. She, like many women in her position, is struggling to re-join her life where she left it before her diagnosis and treatment. This is affecting not just her but her relationship with her husband and children. I wanted to refer her to The Haven where I felt she could work through these issues and meet other women who had conquered similar experiences and come out the other side, stronger and able to face each new day. With a young family she was not able to make the journey to The Haven - this was my light bulb moment to contact Future Dreams. After diagnosis, what are the choices available to breast cancer sufferers who require breastconserving surgery or mastectomy? Breast cancer treatment has changed over the last decade. The approach to managing any breast cancer diagnosis will include gaining as much information as possible before a personalised treatment plan can be made. Surgery to the breast is however still broadly divided into breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy. Oncoplastic surgery priorities excellent cancer management. Using these techniques allows more women to keep their breasts. For example, a cancer in a sufficiently large breast maybe tackled via a breast reduction - a therapeutic mammoplasty.
“Knowledge is power: once we have all the information we can develop a personalised plan.”
There are, however sometimes, still indications for mastectomy. This can be combined with a reconstruction either at the time of the cancer surgery or at a later date. The advantages of an immediate reconstruction include improved aesthetics and maintenance of positive body image. The improved prognosis for women diagnosed with breast cancer has placed a much greater emphasis on survivorship. Choosing the right management for an individual patient has never been more important. Patients live for decades with the adverse effects of both their surgery and medical treatments. A poor cosmetic outcome or lifelong side effects from medication can be a daily reminder and have life-altering psychosocial effects. What is the youngest case of breast cancer you have seen to date? The practice at UCLH specialises in seeing more young women with breast cancer as they are referred from across the London Cancer Region. The majority of these women have no significant family history. The youngest patient I have seen was 17 years old - she did however have a genetic predisposition to the disease. Please can you share your knowledge and opinion on breast awareness, screening, mammography and the importance of knowing your body? Most of the women who we see in the breast clinic with a diagnosis of breast cancer come through the symptomatic clinic - they have noticed a change in the breast. It is vital that we remain breast aware and regularly self-examine. Once a month women should be looking at their breasts and examining themselves. The most important thing is to know the road map of you. If you notice any changes then you need prompt clinical review. A women’s breast changes considerably through her stages of life. Any patient or GP concerns should always be taken seriously and expert advice should be sought.

21/09/2015 17:49
Mammograms are used to assess women from 40 years old. However, younger women who attend a symptomatic clinic with suspicious changes in the breast may have a mammogram as part of their assessment. MRI scans are used to screen high risk women and may be needed to gather more information once a diagnosis of breast cancer has been made. The statistics of women surviving breast cancer are improving every year and treatment today has evolved and transformed so much in the last 10 years. How has this changed the patient journey? How does The Haven fit in with these changes? Breast cancer treatment has become much more sophisticated. Gathering information about each individual cancer is necessary to develop a personalised management plan. Once you are told the lump or changes you have in your breast are a cancer then most patient’s reaction is to remove it as quickly as possible. The wait for the results of further investigations can be agonising and the concept of treating with medical therapies first can take some adjustment. Fortunately we now have a much greater range of treatments in our armoury. Patients should never feel rushed into making a decision until we have all of the facts. Each case is different and may need a specific approach to get the very best long term result. Knowledge is power: once we have all the information we can develop a personalised plan. It goes without saying that surgery is irreversible - patients can only understand all the options open to them once we have a full picture of an individual case. To give a couple of practical examples, a patient diagnosed with a large cancer who previously would have had a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy may be able to achieve breast conserving surgery if she has the chemotherapy first. Another patient may be able to convert a mastectomy without reconstruction to one combined with an immediate reconstruction if she has medical treatment prior to the surgery. The increased number of options available to patients can feel daunting. At the Haven, patients can speak to other women going through the same decision-making process or to those who have come out the other end of the treatment. Meeting others who have faced similar challenges and conquered their fears takes away some of the feelings of isolation. Finding a place where you can be yourself instead of putting all your energies into pretending you are OK makes all the difference. The treatment regimes push patients both physically and emotionally and having a support network that can empathise not just sympathise makes all the difference. Do you believe conventional and complementary therapies are equally vital for breast cancer care and treatment? Have you ever visited The Haven, Fulham? I am a great believer in running complementary therapies alongside conventional treatment. I think the two work well together and many of the treatments available at The
“Unfortunately men tend to be diagnosed at a later stage as breast cancer is often not considered.”
Haven help with the management of both short term and long term side effects. It is evident to those who see patients who have been fortunate enough to visit The Haven just how much power women gain when they draw on each other’s strength. Meeting people who have had similar experiences and being able to freely express themselves in a place of security is so important. My patients put on a brave face much of the time - they have thoughts which they rarely allow to escape from the recesses of their minds - working through these issues is an important part of the healing process. Finding the right place to do it is paramount - The Haven allows this. Is there any difference in the treatment of women under 40 and that of older generations? The treatment of any breast cancer will be determined by the tumour burden, cancer type, and how we predict it will respond to different treatments. However in the under 40s there are additional factors to consider. We are more likely to offer genetic testing to this group of patients - the result of this may influence the surgical approach to the index breast and the other side. Depending on the age of the patients and their stage in life, fertility will be an area which we need to discuss prior to starting any medical treatment. They are also the group of patients who may already have a young family who will need support as they watch their mother undergo treatment. For single mothers, parental responsibility may influence what treatment regime they will be able to accept. These patients may attend with their own parents as their main supporters. This is particularity hard on both the patients and the parents - none of whom would have considered this scenario until they have to face it. What percentage of men are affected by breast cancer? 1% of breast cancer diagnoses are male and I usually treat one male per year in my practice. Unfortunately men tend to be diagnosed at a later stage as breast cancer is often not considered. So all the men out there, breast awareness is also important for you.

What do you think of the fundraising work of Future Dreams and their mission to partner with The Haven and open London largest breast cancer support centre, Future Dreams House, in the new Kings Cross Development? Future Dreams House will provide a lifeline to those women who have recently been diagnosed, are undergoing treatment, coping with the issues of survivorship or tackling the devastating news that they have had a relapse. The location in the new Kings Cross Development should allow more patients from across north and central London to use these vitally needed services. I know that patients will benefit from it as soon as the doors open.
“I am a great believer in running complementary therapies alongside conventional treatment”
How do you relax? Like most of the people reading this magazine I am at my happiest when I am with my husband and sons. Spending time with my family and friends is my priority when I am not working. It’s not an easy balance and I am acutely aware of how understanding they all have to be as there are times when I am a little distracted or cancel arrangements at short notice. When I am outside of London I am at my most relaxed as I am too far away to get hands on and so I focus my energies on having some down time.
How do you juggle being a surgeon, mother, wife? What is your daily routine? It’s a constant balancing act and like all working mothers there are times when, on reflection, I do not get it right. Monday to Friday I am working full time - I have help with my children and an amazingly supportive husband who relieves my maternal guilt. On the days I operate and know I will be late he will try to be home to see the boys before bed. The boys know that once I get home I don’t usually need to go back in but they are also aware that it can happen. Every morning they ask me what time I will be back, which is a tug on the heart strings. I try not to work on the weekend - I may do an early ward round. When I take annual leave I try not to be in London as it’s hard to separate work and home life. What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate - I have far too much. What is the motto you live by? “Everything in moderation” and “life is for living.” FUTUREDREAMS.ORG.UK | 47

breast cancer cookbook the
Professor Mohammed Keshtgar, consultant breast cancer specialist at The Royal Free, London, believes that diet and lifestyle are risk factors in the development and progression of the disease. Here he talks about his new cookbook and what prompted him to write it. I was motivated to write this book in collaboration with my colleagues as I have become increasingly convinced that diet and lifestyle are contributing factors to the development of cancer. Over the years, I have met and treated countless women, and some men, with breast cancer. In my experience, when a patient is informed of their breast cancer diagnosis, after a short period of getting over the shock of the news, the majority would like to take an active role in their treatment. They find loss of control difficult to bear and they would like to regain that control. I am asked to advise them on what they can do to help them fight the disease. Diet and lifestyle are two aspects that they can modify immediately, and with relative ease. Many feel empowered to take responsibility for themselves. This also helps them to go into fight mode and psychologically feel better about themselves and their treatment. My approach is very much in keeping with the philosophy of Dr Caroline Hoffman, Clinical and Research Director at The Haven, who comments ‘Helping people to develop healthy eating habits is an important part of The Haven’s support programme. It can bring many benefits such as helping to reduce some of the side effects from medical treatment, maintaining a healthy weight and supporting your immune system. Healthy eating can also boost mental health and well-being by supporting the health of the brain and the nervous system, as well as your general well-being. It also gives you something that you can do to help yourself in a positive way’. So my colleagues and I have prepared a guide to foods to eat more of, foods to eat in moderation and foods you should be cautious of. This is followed by 100 recipes, which have been carefully devised, incorporating the current evidence to help you towards a healthy, well-balanced diet. I hope that you enjoy cooking and eating them.

Blend for about 5 minutes, scraping the sides down regularly, until you have a soft, spoonable sorbet. If the mixture still seems very stiff after 5 minutes of blending, add 2 tbsp water and blend again. Serve immediately. Tip: soothing sorbets and ices Sensitive gums and a sore mouth are a common consequence of cancer treatment and care must be taken to prevent localised infections, as your body has enough to cope with fighting cancer. Cold, smooth foods like ices and sorbets can provide a welcome relief from discomfort. Make your own soft ices and smoothies and use them as a means to introduce nutrient-rich fruits into your diet, remembering to avoid any ingredients known to irritate your mouth.

IT’S TIME TO
WITH LOLA ROSE AND FUTURE DREAMS My connection to Future Dreams is extremely personal and very close to my heart. I grew up with Sylvie and Danielle, so have always had an immense loyalty to their cause to help women with breast cancer. I watched in awe as they set up Future Dreams and worked to create a safe place for women in similar situations to their own and I continue to watch, with the upmost respect, the progress that is made in their memory to improve the lives of others.
d We all know someone who has been touched by this terrible disease, so to know that there are support centres out there, such as The Haven, that are vital in offering essential emotional and physical support to both women and their families, makes it just that little bit easier to deal with. I feel incredibly privileged to be given the opportunity to have a part in helping build a stronger future for so many, and so humbled that I am able to share the success of Lola Rose with a cause I feel so very passionate about.
For the month of October we will be donating 15% off full price jewellery sales at www.lolarose.co.uk to help Future Dreams with its aim of raising ÂŁ5million to create a much needed breast cancer support centre in central London. It was Vogue that described Melissa Odabash’s swimwear as the “Ferrari of the bikini world” and it is certainly easy to see how she earned such praise. The American ex-model designs swimwear that is cut to perfection, making women feel like a million dollars. She has been an expert in her field for over 15 years, with her most recent accolade being a Golden Award for ‘Swimwear Brand of the Year’. Her celebrity fans, meanwhile, include the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. Yet it is her most recent initiative of which she is most proud. It was a decade ago, after her sister Jamie underwent a mastectomy and then struggled to find swimwear, that Melissa realised there was a gap in the market. With her customary determination, she decided to take the initiative and, together with London’s most dynamic breast cancer fundraising charity, Future Dreams (for which she is an ambassador), created a gorgeous swimwear collection that took into consideration the difficulties and concerns of women dealing with postsurgery issues. With fellow Future Dreams celebrity ambassador and Sky TV presenter Jacquie Beltrao - who herself had undergone a mastectomy - as the ‘face’ of the new brand, the collection was launched at Fenwick’s at the beginning of 2015. Melissa’s main aim when designing the range was to make women feel confident again. Before she began, she spent time with inspiring Future Dreams supporters Joanna Leviton and Selena Levy, with their own very personal experiences of breast cancer proving invaluable. Melissa then worked tirelessly to find the right materials. She used designs made from soft microfibre fabric so there were no seams or wiring. When Jacquie was first asked to model the collection she said she felt ‘liberated’ and wanted to show other women who might be experiencing what she was going through a year ago that there is hope. Each style is named after someone whose life has been affected by the disease. Along with the Jacquie, the Joanna and the Selena, there is the Danielle and the Sylvie, named for Future Dreams’ mother-anddaughter founders Sylvie Henry and Danielle Leslie who both passed away after battles with breast cancer within two years of starting the charity.

Since it was launched back in 1999, Melissa Odabash as a brand has gone from strength to strength. Complementing the range of swimwear, which is sold in 47 countries around the world, is a range of beachwear accessories including beach bags, jewellery, sandals and hats. Always happy to come out of her comfort zone, we can tell that Melissa loves what she’s doing and we are very lucky to have her on board.

Pink is a surprising trend for autumn as it’s often associated with spring time. I always thought of it as a young girl’s favourite shade and not so much for grown-ups. But I’m seriously reconsidering pink since seeing so much of it on the AW15 catwalks. Where fashion leads, we follow. With pink’s positive connotations of youth, innocence, charm, tenderness, romance and femininity, what’s not to love? Women look radiant when they wear pink and we all want to look healthy and pretty – so if you’ve forgotten pink, why not inject it back into your life this autumn. All skin tones can benefit from the skin-brightening powers of pink: to be ‘in the pink’ means to be in extremely good health and spirits! In the Summer most of us prefer to look tanned, but in Autumn you can mimic a cold flush. You don’t have to completely ditch your bronzer – combine the two. Choose a subtle pink toned bronzer - not too orange or too dark for your skin tone. Pick up a little with a big brush and sweep across your cheeks and forehead, or gently contour cheekbones (I call this ‘brontour’!) Then add a berry blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Using a cream blush makes you look more natural, as the texture doesn’t sit on the skin. Feel your bones with your fingers – I like to slightly sculpt by creating a ‘Nike’ tick from the front of the cheekbone (the padded part) up towards the temples. Bright and dark pinks can be sheered out to look natural, so don’t be put off by intense shades. Buff it on with a fibre brush as sometimes fingers can pick up too much product. The most impactful way to wear pink is on the lips - last Autumn/Winter season boasted pink power pouts on the catwalks – well crafted, bold, bright and mainly matte. This season, the trend is for a frosted texture and a paler pink, on a tidal wave of nineties nostalgia. Texture is as important as colour. Choosing the right pink for your skin tone is like choosing a red lipstick: try a cool toned pink (slightly blue or lilac) and a warm toned pink (slightly orange or peach) to find out which suits you the most. The wrong shade will drain and the right shade will light up your face. Ask a friend. If pink lips are a step too far for you, try it on your nails! We can be more playful with our fingertips. Or tap into the glamorous gothic trend with a deep plum or dark chocolate lip, marrying it with pink cheeks and grey eye shadow. Pink cheeks and lips soften black eyes and brows, so you can go darker than you would normally dare.
"I'm deeply touched by the stories of the ladies in recovery. I want to see the Future Dreams House built so I can come and help them feel better through the medium of makeup." Sharon Dowsett
This season it’s lining eyes in a tough schoolgirl way and darkening full brows in a Cara D way. Brows frame the face and these tend to be the first things that I define. I use a couple of shades that are close to my hair colour, literally lifting them by pencilling a little higher, especially the arch. I start with blonde and build up to brunette. Black may be too hard for real life, so try dark brown if you want strong brows. Seasons are about renewal, which is the perfect reason to update your makeup routine. I think of makeup as part of getting dressed, LUXURIOUS and we change what we wear according MASCARA FOR INSTANT FALSE LASH EFFECT to the weather. In the same way you’d swap your cotton REMASTERED FORMULA T-shirt for a cashmere cardigan; swap your tinted RAISE THE VOLUME, LIVE THE LEGEND moisturiser for a lightweight, velvety foundation. Maybe this Autumn you might want to choose one with a pink tone, and give yourself a boost. Don’t forget that SPF is still a necessity - even when you can’t see the sun, it’s still there.

1. Morgan Taylor Nail Polish Simply irresistible! 2. Soft Pink by Shu Uemura The powder version I like is the soft pink by Shu Uemura, as the pigment’s so true and the texture so soft. This blush will give you a real colour boost and will last longer than creams or gels. Apply transculent powder first so that it glides on, or afterwards to tone it down. 3. L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique BB Blush L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique BB Blush – Universal Blush for Rosy Healthy Cheeks – is a ‘self-adjusting’ velvety gel that goes on clear and transforms on contact into a long wearing rosy ‘stain’ for your cheeks. It really is a bit like magic and very natural looking.

4. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat For under eye illumination, the original is still the best – YSL’s Touche Eclat in Luminous Radiance has a pinky tone which hides the appearance of fatigue by concealing and brightening. It can also be used to highlight cheek and brow bones, down the centre of your nose and Cupid’s bow. 5. Lancome Lipstick Lancome’s lipstick range contains many shades of pink in a hydrating formula – your lips will feel the change in temperature so nourish them at the same time as colouring them. Pink is the ultimate feminine colour and the most sophisticated shade you can wear this Autumn!
6
6. Maybelline New York Volum’ Express You can’t beat Maybelline NY’s mascaras for value and their wands always marry the formula perfectly. My all time favourite is Falsies because the curved wand cups your lashes and curls them as you apply – it’s like a support bra for your lashes! 7. Nourishing Lip Sheen Packed with passion fruit oil, pistachio butter and organic shea butter, our Nourishing Lip Sheen cares for more than just your lips. 8. Giorgio Armani Eye Tint Flannel Giorgio Armani’s new eye tints can be applied in a translucent way – the smooth, silky texture creates an even wash of colour. Try a subtle pink like Flannel with soft brown mascara. If you like the idea of a stronger pink, edge with a thin black liner to avoid eyes looking ‘sore’ or use the colour to blush your brow bones. 9. Clarisonic Cleaning System Most importantly, for your skin to glow, makeup must be taken off properly! Since I discovered Clarisonic, my skin has looked much clearer, which means I spend less time covering up and more time experimenting with colour!

We are very proud to have you has an ambassador to Future Dreams, are you involved with lots of charities? As professional sports women we do a lot of charity and community work with our clubs and with our international team but I wanted to work closely with a charity that I have an emotional empathy with. What is the emotional empathy that you feel you have with Future Dreams? A number of members of my family been affected by different forms of cancer. I wanted to be able to support women going through the same thing that members of my family have been through. By raising awareness of the Future Dreams charity I can hopefully help Future Dreams reach the goal of building a Haven in London.

The AW15 collection sees classic prints take on a new form through innovative design techniques. Bringing together elements of the lady and the rebel that make up the Lily and Lionel woman, this season’s pieces are elegant yet contemporary. Designs have been painted free-hand, lending an inky, fluid element to traditional animal and floral prints, whilst an emphasis on texture adds depth and diversity. This season’s signature city scenes have been inspired by old photos from the Lily and Lionel family album, with spots of light placed to soften an urban landscape. A neutral colour palette throughout the collection ties all these themes together, creating new classics that you can effortlessly mix and match with your winter wardrobe. One of the pieces from A/W15 that Lily and Lionel is most proud of is ‘Hope’, the scarf that has been produced to support Future Dreams. Featuring a bespoke but signature Lily and Lionel leopard digital print, the scarf is a wearable and contemporary monochrome base with flashes of feminine candy pink. Tactile, soft and oversized, it is a luxurious and covetable accessory for every woman. “I was incredibly moved by the story of Sylvie and Danielle and so inspired by the strong and dynamic women of the Future Dreams committee. I have every confidence that the charity will reach their target to build the Future Dreams House, I wanted to give back and be part of the journey” said Alice Stone, founder of Lily and Lionel.
Sold exclusively online at www.lilyandlionel.com, the scarf is a limited edition, with 50% of every sale going directly to Future Dreams. The print was inspired by a favourite Lily and Lionel scarf worn by Future Dreams’ founder Danielle Leslie.
In 2014 Lily and Lionel was awarded Accessories Brand of the Year at the Drapers Accessories and Footwear Awards. As well as being named Walpole’s British Luxury Brand of Tomorrow 2012, we’re proud to say we have fans in Elle Macpherson, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Savannah Miller, Natasha Corrett and Liv Tyler. laura hobson Illustrator for the Future Dreams Savoy Handbag Auction
Graphic Designer and illustrator Laura Hobson from Poke London has lovingly illustrated each stunning bag for Future Dreams as a charity chapter of her ‘A Bag a Day’ blog, this series will raise money for the Future Dreams Haven Appeal “I’ve always loved drawing and have been creating since a young age – I actually used to cut out bags and clothes from fashion magazines and make them into my own fictional magazine layouts! The bags I draw are usually interesting colours; I love using colour and patterns to create texture in my illustrations.” Future Dreams is close to Laura’s heart as her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer almost 10 years ago, while in her 40s, so of course she was keen to help fundraise and raise awareness for the appeal. Thankfully her mum defeated the cancer through chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. The hospital nurses supporting her were fantastic and really helped her mum through fighting the disease, which is why Laura believes The Future Dreams Haven Appeal is such a worthwhile cause. “I think it’s very important for women diagnosed with breast cancer to have somewhere to relax and go to for support.”
“The Ralph Lauren Ricky Floral bag has become a favourite of mine”
Ralph Lauren
Name Laura Hobson Age 24 Birthplace Derby Current location London Favourite bag Used to be the Celine Luggage Tote, but I’ve fallen in love with the Ralph Lauren Ricky Floral bag – it was just so fun to illustrate! Favourite fashion designer I love Elie Saab – the material and gorgeous colours used for his dresses are amazing. If I ever won the lottery I would buy one of his dresses immediately! Favourite fashion illustrator Can I have two? I love Megan Hess’s work - she has a very different style to me, but I love the controlled, precise aspect to her work. And then Donald Drawbertson (featured in last years issue) has an amazing portfolio of work – his style is very loose and I love the expression in DONALD DRAWBE RTSON his illustrations.
CIRCLES OF STRENGTH
To help with Future Dreams’ fundraising, Laura illustrated all the donated bags for The Savoy ‘Handbag Auction’ and has also produced limited edition prints of all the bags where 100% of the proceeds will also go to the cause “There’s a massive range in terms of design, pattern, and colour, so they were all fun to illustrate, but the Ralph Lauren Ricky Floral bag has become a favourite of mine - the pattern is amazing and makes it such a bold statement piece.”

let’s talk
LYMPHOEDEMA
Gemma Levine shares her own experience of this difficult condition and how she was inspired to raise awareness and knowledge to help fellow sufferers Introducing Gemma Levine, photographer Diana Princess of Wales, Baroness Margaret Thatcher, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Judi Dench, Henry Moore ... since the mid-1970s, Gemma Levine has been photographing the British Establishment in her signature black-and-white style. With a gift for creating unobtrusive settings that reflect the individual style of her sitters, Gemma’s career has encompassed hundreds of encounters with the most wellknown and fascinating people in Britain. As Sir John Gielgud said, ‘It is an unexpected pleasure to submit oneself to an artist whom one can relax with on such easy terms and whose pictures are so successfully expressive.’ Her unique relationship with the sculptor Henry Moore led her to create intimate photographs of his working practices over a ten-year period, until his death in 1986. Gemma’s archive is housed at TATE Britain where she lectures on the sculptor and his work. Through her career she spent time photographing Israel’s landcsape, and top Israeli Leaders including Golda Meir and Yitzhak Rabin.

Gemma’s unexpected diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer in November 2010 resulted in a full mastectomy on her right breast, followed by the trauma of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She was alerted when noticing an inflammation externally on her right breast, and shared her concern over supper that evening with a friend, who advised her to get a breast check at her GP. While undergoing chemotherapy and having excess time on her hands, Gemma talked to patients who were in the same position. She gained insight, positive and negative, of patients’ thoughts and reactions to their breast cancer journey. Writing the text in her head and simultaneously living it herself, she realised that a book on breast cancer was a project she needed to complete. Post treatment, Gemma wrote ‘Go with the flow’, a practical guide to the incredible journey that all cancer patients must travel if they are to regain control of their life. This best seller included contributions from medical practitioners, researchers, support staff, therapists, even make-up experts and a cordon bleu cook that, combined to provide a book of valuable insights and comfort. Proceeds of the published book went to Maggi Cancer Care Centres. Two months post radio therapy, Gemma’s right arm, from below her elbow, felt heavy, ached and was particularly swollen. This pain was disturbing her creative work as she was unable to hold her heavy camera equipment. Acting swiftly, Gemma went straight to her breast surgeon Professor Kefah Mokbel at The Princess Grace Hospital, London. He recognised her symptoms immediately and told Gemma that she was now suffering from lymphoedema. An appointment was made with Bernie Martin, a remedial massage specialist,
“Little is known about lymphoedema. Nevertheless it causes huge physical and psychological suffering post breast cancer treatment. It manifests with an uncomfortable arm or breast swelling and can cause severe life threatening infections within the swollen region. One in five women (and men treated for breast cancer) have a lifetime risk of developing lymphoedema. Breast cancer treatment is a long and uncomfortable journey but for the majority who are cured it can become a distant memory. That is not so for lymphoedema which cannot be cured and is always a visual reminder of the breast cancer. Lymphoedema remains one of the major distressing side effects of cancer treatment. I predict that in the foreseeable future, new treatments will become available. Only then will doctors really become interested. Hopefully this booklet will raise interest and knowledge.” Professor Peter Mortimer MD FRCP

and the breast nurse handed Gemma a small booklet about lymphoedema. Gemma was unsure, frightened and concerned how long this condition was going to last. The massage sessions took nearly two years of weekly visits. Taking further advice, Gemma also visited Carmel Phelan, a manual lymph drainage specialist, who used compression machines and recommended Gemma wore specialised garments, enabling the condition to remain stable. In February 2015 Gemma was featured in a BBC TV Documentary about her life and career. Filmed at her home and studio, the viewer was given an understanding into all aspects of Gemma’s dayto-day life. Of course this included, very fleetingly, her lymphoedema routine and treatment. As the documentary ended Gemma was flooded by emails from lymphoedema sufferers who had seen the programme, sparking another mission in Gemma to write and share her experiences with this littlepublicised condition. Whilst at a check-up appointment with her oncologist, Professor Paul Ellis at The LOC, Gemma proposed putting together a publication about living with lymphoedema. That day, Gemma learnt all about Future Dreams, as unbeknown to her, Professor Paul Ellis is the Future Dreams Medical Trustee and a close friend to the founder’s family. He suggested that Gemma contact Professor Peter Mortimer MD FRCP, the lead in dermatological medicine and research into the development of lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment, based at the University of London, St George’s and The Royal Marsden Hospitals. At that meeting, Peter and Gemma shared a vision to create a much needed book to give guidance and information to sufferers. Today, Gemma Levine and the Future Dreams Team share a goal, that there will be the first lymphoedema ‘Salon’ at Future Dreams House and all visitors will have access to specialised treatment and be given a complimentary edition of ‘Let’s talk lymphoedema’.

Andaz Hotel LIVERPOOL STREET | LONDON Located in the heart of the City and bordering vibrant East London, the 5-star luxury boutique Andaz London provides the perfect location for leisure and business guests alike. Formerly the Great Eastern, one of London’s original railway hotels, Andaz London is housed in a beautiful redbrick building dating back to 1884. Once inside it transforms into a 21st century masterpiece, a stunning blend of traditional and contemporary features throughout, with 267 beautifully appointed guest rooms and suites, seven fabulous restaurants and bars, fourteen private dining and event spaces and a 24-hour health club, cementing its reputation as one of London’s most stylish hotels.
In 2012 I travelled to London for my chemotherapy treatments which meant staying at the Andaz Liverpool Street hotel. The experience was made easier by the great support from their kind and understanding team. They helped me keep my spirit and dignity through this dark time. It saddens me to know so many struggle through this alone, but fortunately I was privileged to stay at the Andaz, a place that became my haven.
“The experience was made easier by the great support from their kind and understanding team.”
I return to stay at the Andaz every time I’m in London, and each trip I can’t wait to reconnect with the extraordinary staff who helped make what could have been an awful experience something I remember with great sentiment. – Barb Shadomy
