WELCOME 2015: AN EXCITING YEAR Future Dreams Brick appeal The Brick Appeal is a monumental initiative to raise £5 million. The Future Dreams Team are on a mission to recruit 1000 ‘builders’.

Welcome

This year sees the launch of our most ambitious and exciting project to date: The Future Dreams Haven Appeal, which will deliver a support centre in the heart of London to women and families who have been affected by breast cancer.

Melissa Odabash launches The Future Dreams swimwear collection. Specifically tailored for those who have been affected by breast cancer.

We are delighted to welcome you to SushiSamba where we can celebrate this new chapter and reach new heights with new supporters to create much-needed awareness and funding.

SushiSamba Reaching New Heights

Thank you SushiSamba for choosing us as your London women’s charity and for hosting this wonderful event giving us the opportunity to harness the already overwhelming momentum towards creating this landmark centre. Our challenge is vast (our founders would have expected nothing less!) and, with your help, we are aiming to fulfil our dream by 2018. Together we can achieve a remarkable legacy and continue to work towards Danielle and Sylvie’s hope that no one should have to face breast cancer alone.

WE NO ONE SHOULD FACE BREAST CANCER ALONE

Our story

The Future Dreams Charity was established in 2008 to raise money for breast cancer research. To date over £2 million has been raised, the majority of which has been donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer research. Future Dreams was founded by Danielle Leslie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, and her mother Sylvie Henry, was also diagnosed at a very young age. Both dancers, with a passionate love of ballet and theatre, Sylvie and Danielle decided to raise money by producing a celebrity, variety performance at the Savoy Theatre in London. The event was so successful that it led to two further shows. Tragically, both Sylvie and Danielle lost their battles against breast cancer within a year of each other. However, their legacy lives on and continues to grow, fulfilling their dream to strive for a future free of breast cancer.

Our mission

FUTURE DREAMS IS DEVOTED TO RAISING VITAL FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER SUPPORT AND RESEARCH SUPPORT Our mission is to raise £5 million pounds in order to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven. This will be home to the central London Haven support centre. This landmark centre will provide free one-to-one emotional and physical support and therapies to improve the lives of anyone affected by breast cancer.

RESEARCH Future Dreams continues to raise funds for Professor Clare Isack’s laboratory at Breast Cancer Now Research Centre, London, specialising in research into secondary breast cancer.

FUTURE DREAMS HOUSE Future Dreams is partnering with The Haven to support people living with breast cancer. Future Dreams is now London’s most dynamic breast cancer fundraising charity and has chosen to partner with The Haven which is the only National charity to provide free one-to-one emotional and physical support to improve the lives of anyone affected by breast cancer. Together we will build the ‘Future Dreams House’, a landmark centre in the heart of the new Kings Cross development, specialising in breast cancer, which will look after sufferers and their families.

the vision

The Haven is leading the way in the field of complementary breast cancer support by offering in-depth and individually tailored programmes of care to people affected by breast cancer. Working in partnership with the NHS and other charities, they aim to help people live well, with and beyond breast cancer. The Haven intends to expand into areas of the country where there is an acute need for its services. London remains the major national hub for breast cancer treatment and The Haven has long-recognised the need to expand its services in the capital. Currently there is only one Londonbased Haven Centre, located in Fulham, and over half of the women who visit this centre have to travel across London to access its services. The NHS is overstretched and although it provides excellent medical treatment for breast cancer patients, The Haven fills the void which is often

Our mission and goal is to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven, in the heart of the new Kings Cross Development. This will support 14 NHS hospitals and the private HCA hospitals including Princess Grace, London Clinic to name a few in central London and North and East London for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Together WE CAN ACHIEVE SOMETHING remarkable! ON 1ST JANUARY 2015 LONDON’S MOST DYNAMIC BREAST CANCER CHARITY ROLLED OUT ITS BIGGEST INITIATIVE TO DATE – THE FUTURE DREAMS #BRICKAPPEAL CAMPAIGN. Since then the committee have devoted just about every waking hour to ensuring the success of this ambitious initiative, hosting a myriad of events everywhere from the Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill and Salmontini, Belgravia to the Café Royal, Piccadilly and The Haven in Whetsone. Over the course of the last three months, the team has met some incredible and dynamic women and men, many of whom have had their lives touched in some way by this dreadful disease.

14 | REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2015

The premise behind the campaign is a pretty simple one. Each ‘builder’ or groups of ‘builders’ have to sell 250 luxury prize draw bricks, each worth £20, to their friends, colleagues, family members – in fact everyone in their little black book! After purchasing, each brick will be entered into The Prize Draw, offering the individual an opportunity to win some fantastic and unique luxury prizes. All of the money raised will go towards the £5 million needed to open Future Dreams House, home to The Haven – that, by 2018 the proposed centre will offer the women of North, East and Central London suffering from the effects of breast cancer a free, multi-faceted and accessible support centre. The Future Dreams committee is lucky enough to be working alongside organisations such as The Global Charity Trust, created by David Johnstone CEO and Founder of the Free Holdings Group and fellow trustee Lord Stanley Fink, which has provided a range of amazing aspirational prizes, including dinners for two at London’s best restaurants and overnight stays at exclusive spas. This renowned worldwide charity continually helps to raise funds and awareness from small to large projects focusing on health, education, vulnerable children, the environment and animal welfare. At every event we are joined by a representative from the original Haven in Fulham. With this facility so oversubscribed, they know better than anyone the difference it would make to so many lives to have a second Haven in the capital. So far we have raised just over £200,000 and our empowering builders are continuing with their amazing efforts. Every builder who raises £5,000 will be acknowledged on the visionary wall in the main entrance of Future Dreams House. We’ve even managed to secure radio interviews, national newspapers and glossy magazines, all of which think this campaign is worth shouting about. Our ambitious target is to raise £5million and while the Future Dreams team is busy recruiting their builders and continually on hand helping and supporting existing builders together we are achieving something remarkable! Our goal is to open The Future Dreams House in heart of central London in 2018.

How many other Havens do you have in the country? We currently have three Haven centres located in West London, Leeds and Hereford. A new centre which will serve the Wessex region is opening in Hampshire this coming October. It is our aim to have ten centres in operation by 2025. This expansion of our breast cancer support service supports our vision of helping as many people as possible affected by breast cancer.

Why/how is The Haven different to anything else? The Haven is the only charity that offers free, personalised emotional and physical support to people affected by breast cancer.

Tell us about your collaboration with NHS. We’re excited about a new partnership with the NHS in Worcester which is opening a new state-of-the art breast unit later in the year. We will be running a Haven service one day a week from this new unit as a year-long pilot project. This is an entirely new model of operation for us and we hope it will go a long way in helping to meet the needs of breast cancer patients in a location that is convenient for them.

Please elaborate on how the centre not only helps women but their families dealing with cancer. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is devastating and traumatic but it also has a huge impact on the families and close friends of that individual. Recognising this, The Haven is able to provide free counselling to help people come to terms with a relatives or close friend’s diagnosis.

How does The Haven help sufferers financially? The Haven works in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support which enables us to employ an adviser who offers high quality welfare benefits, money advice and information. This adviser can help cancer patients check their entitlement to State benefits and

claim any benefits they are entitled to. This includes help with form-filling, appealing and negotiating on their behalf.

“BOTH FUTURE DREAMS AND THE HAVEN STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM BREAST CANCER SHOULDN’T HAVE TO FACE IT ALONE.”

What other complementary therapies do you offer to meet their bespoke needs? We offer a wide range of complementary therapies which help address both emotional and physical issues. Amongst the most popular are counselling, massage, acupuncture, reflexology and nutrition.

Is Fulham Haven bursting at the seams? How many women use this centre? The Fulham Haven is busy but we are able to manage our visitor numbers without having to resort to long waiting lists. We have around 700 new visitors each year but that doesn’t take into account the repeat visits of existing clients, many of whom visit us several times for their course of ten free treatments.

What role does nutrition play at the centre? and some fruit, plays an important part in a patient’s recovery

supporting the health of the brain and nervous system. It can give back a sense of control and positive involvement in people’s recovery.

What do you think of Future Dreams? I have deep admiration and respect for Future Dreams and their fundraising achievements. To have raised such impressive amounts of money for breast cancer research and support is no mean feat in the current economic climate. Their successes are even more poignant when you consider that the reason they exist is to honour the memory and wishes of their dear friends, Sylvie and Danielle, who both sadly lost their battles to breast cancer. Future Dreams has certainly created a long-lasting legacy for these two women.

How is Future Dreams House an extension of The Haven in Fulham? Both Future Dreams and The Haven strongly believe that people suffering from breast cancer shouldn’t have to face it alone and that they should be able to access the help and support they need to get them through the toughest challenge of their lives. To open a new facility in London is a fantastic opportunity for our charity and we couldn’t be doing it without the help of such a dynamic fundraising charity such as Future Dreams.

Why have you enjoyed working with the Future Dreams team? What do you think of the Brick Appeal events? Future Dreams are a joy to work with. They have so much energy and enthusiasm for the cause and you have to remember they all give up their precious time to pursue their goals. We are extremely grateful to receive their support. We are very excited about the Brick Appeal campaign which is such a great fundraising concept. The drinks parties that I’ve been to have all been great fun and really well attended. Everyone that I have spoken to at these events has expressed such enthusiasm for the cause. I’m sure the campaign will go from strength to strength.

WE

speak

TO

NINA MAE FOWLER ON ART, LIFE AND FEMALE STRENGTH Why you have chosen to support Future Dreams? I was invited to attend the annual fundraising lunch last year in place of a close friend who could not attend. The friend in question had recently been through breast cancer and I wanted to show my support. I was hugely impressed by the level of commitment the organisers of the event showed by staging a moving, informative and engaging afternoon, during which an incredible amount of money was raised. I learnt about the charity, its founders, the work it does and its ambitions for the future and I felt motivated to help. Future Dreams feels to me an intensely personal project – founded by a mother and daughter, whose family and friends are driven by love and strength in continuing their legacy. Anybody who has been affected by breast cancer, including myself, can only be compelled by the passion behind this charity. Being a Future Dreams Ambassador Sam Jacobs and Jessica Smith hoped that I might be able to offer some assistance in organising an art auction in aid of Future Dreams. Having been involved in numerous auctions in the past (donating works) and being connected with other London based artists I felt I could help. I am over the moon with the works we have collected for this auction so far as it shows how much the artists want to support the charity and its aim to build ‘Future Dreams House’. Donating works is a brilliant way to offer help and create a buzz around the auction.

Tell us about you, your partner, and life with a baby. How you are dealing with this? When I started working with Future Dreams I was seven months pregnant and have since given birth to a baby boy and moved to the countryside! It has been a bit of a whirlwind but since I am not currently in my studio I have been at my computer in spare moments letting people know about the charity and hoping to garner new support.

20 | REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2015

Share your thoughts about your beautiful collection and your donated ‘Knockers’ piece. My work is very focused on the female. It is fundamentally about female strength and desire. My drawings come from a place of deep ambition and profound commitment. I feel they portray the intensity of a woman’s fortitude in times of hardship and therefore are appropriate in representing the work Future Dreams is doing. The piece I have decided to donate to the auction is the apex of this subject matter. It depicts Marlene Dietrich dancing with US marines during WWII when she turned her back on her native Germany in support of the allied forces. This was a show of great bravery and the image is one of loneliness and courage at the same time, dominance and subservience, strength and fragility, outer appearance and inner struggle. What makes this piece unique are the two brass door knockers which are pendulously hanging from her breasts. The knockers are depictions of men, hands bound behind their backs, faces hidden behind masks, twisting and struggling against the black chalk backdrop of their host’s chest. Cast in brass, these figures are a nod towards the melodrama of ornamental Victoriana and recall the twisted, tortured figures of Michelangelo’s Dying and Rebellious Slaves. Each knocker is unique and no picture shares the same pair, there is no mould, each one is an individual sculpture. The brass was sourced from antique fixtures and fittings as it was important to me that they had an authentic essence.

“DONATING WORKS IS A BRILLIANT WAY TO OFFER HELP AND CREATE A BUZZ AROUND THE AUCTION.”

This piece of work holds great value to me, as it brings together years of research into materials, techniques and the subjects it depicts. I am so happy that it will be helping to raise money for a cause I feel as strongly about as the work itself. FUTUREDREAMS.ORG.UK | 21

BEING IN THE BEST HEALTH

you can be WITH VICKI EDGSON

In the corporate world, we are all striving to deliver the best we can, moment-to-moment, day in and day out, to ensure that our contribution is appreciated and hopefully, considered indispensable. But we have to ask ourselves, ‘At what cost to our own health?’

W

orking in my busy London practice, I see too many cases of System Burnout, (exhaustion and fatigue) from those who have pushed themselves to the

limit, and sometimes beyond, until waking one morning to find it literally impossible to face the day, crumbling under the pressure of deadlines and unable to enjoy the usual stimulation and challenges of the profession we are in. I term this System Burnout because it involves all the stress mechanisms in the body, often affecting hormones (not just male and female) that regulate our metabolism, balance our blood sugar levels and energy output and disturb our sense of self and how we cope with all such pressures of the 21st century living. With the advent of social media, interactive communication via computers, iPads and cellular phones, we are expected not responded to a text or email within an hour.

For some, this is simply impossible, and it interferes with creativity and the ability to make the very best contribution to our work.

Developing skills to guard yourself from such an onslaught and consuming foods and beverages that are nourishing to mind and body are essential to your well being, as is creating time to literally ‘switch off’.

hilst some of these pointers seem obvious, they should be considered, in order to create the balance in your life on which your health is dependent. Possibly one of the most difficult is making sure that you have good, nutritious food throughout the day. With a plethora of so-called healthy outlets and chains springing up on every corner, it would appear easier than ever to select from a great choice of such foods. Closer inspection however shows a cocktail of sweeteners, stimulants (some which are even deemed natural) and positively addictive foods. After all, the food industry prides itself on health claims that are frequently misleading, as they strive to create more revenue. Choose instead to get in the habit of taking some foods to work with you, having cooked at home the previous night, or at the weekend, to make this possible to assemble quickly in the morning. In my latest book, Gut Gastronomy, there are dozens of foods that balance blood sugar levels to

3.

Plan your mealtimes, rather than trying to fit them in around your schedule – they should go into your daily routine as an appointment, ensuring that you eat not less than every 3-4 hours. This is essential to balance your blood sugar levels.

4.

Don’t rely on stimulants to ‘keep you going’ throughout the day – these simply spike your energy briefly and leave you more tired than you were previously. Have one or two cups

Avoid all the packet snacks that sit so readily on your desk – crisps, savoury snacks and ‘foods’ you would never find in nature have no place on your desk. Don’t drink alcohol without something lining your stomach – nothing actually exhausts you more, or quicker, than the liver trying to process it out of your system. Enjoy a glass of wine or two after work, as the French do, as part of your meal.

7.

Choose 2 -3 evenings a week when you go without alcohol altogether and make these your fitness evenings. Boxing, spinning, swimming, or Tai Kwando/Judo are all excellent practices for ‘letting go’ of pent-up emotion and frustration.

8.

Decide to finish your work at least two hours before retiring to bed and ensure that you leave all your electronic devices outside of your bedroom. Research has shown unequivocally that the blue light from such devices is sleep disturbing and good health

Choose holiday time well ahead of when you plan to take it to ensure that you don’t bring any work with you whilst you are ‘unplugging’ (to quote Arianna Huffington).

fashion designers who have been recognised for their achievements (including Anya Hindmarch, Alice Temperley and Betty Jackson), Future Dreams is delighted and proud to announce that Nikki Gewirtz, founder of Lola Rose and Future Dreams Brand Ambassador, has been awarded an MBE for her outstanding services to jewellery design. Prince William conferred the honour in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace.

“The Prince was incredibly charming and kind so my nerves evaporated!”

Self-taught, London-based designer, Nikki, launched Lola Rose from her bedroom in 2000 with her beautiful ‘Tumble Bracelets’ – a string of stunning, semi-precious beads threaded on intricately woven silk cord. Leading stores including Harvey Nichols and Fenwick, Bond St snapped them up and they became a fashion sensation with stars like Halle Berry and Sarah Jessica Parker queueing up to buy them! Fifteen years later, Lola Rose now launches two full collections per year featuring stunning, unique, contemporary designs in a selection of metals alongside the glorious mélange of semi-precious stones with which her label is synonymous. “I am delighted and proud to share Lola Rose’s success with a charity I feel so very passionate about. Future Dreams House will be a landmark support centre for so many women and their families who have been affected by breast cancer, and I feel honoured and excited about sharing this journey with the Future Dreams Team and enabling this shared dream to become a reality.” Nikki has been the Future Dreams Brand Ambassador from the beginning and feels a very close affiliation with the charity and their mission: “I am proud to have supported Future Dreams from the start. It is a cause close to my heart, and I knew the founders from childhood and have been incredibly inspired by their strength and focus.” FUTUREDREAMS.ORG.UK | 35

It was Vogue that described Melissa Odabash’s swimwear as the “Ferrari of the bikini world”. And it is

certainly easy to see how she earned such an accolade. The American ex-model designs swimwear that is cut to perfection, making every woman feel like a million dollars. She has been an expert in her field now for over 15 years, with her most recent accolade being a Golden Award for ‘Swimwear Brand of the Year’. Her celebrity fans meanwhile include the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. Yet it is her most recent initiative of which she is most proud.

“ Designing the Future Dreams collection I wanted women to feel good and confident about themselves post surgery.”

OLLEC C R A E W IM W S DREAMS

I

t was a decade ago, after her sister Jamie underwent a mastectomy and then struggled to find swimwear, that Melissa realised there was a gap in the market. With her customary determination, she decided to take the initiative and, together with London’s most dynamic breast cancer fundraising charity, Future Dreams (for which she is an Ambassador), created a gorgeous swimwear collection that took into consideration the difficulties and concerns of women dealing with post-surgery issues. With fellow Future Dreams Celebrity Ambassador and Sky TV presenter Jacquie Beltrao, who herself had undergone a mastectomy, as the ‘face’ of the new brand, the collection was launched at the beginning of 2015 at Fenwick’s. Comprising five styles – all of which have sewn-in moulded cups with the option to insert a breast form – the collection has been a huge success. Which is great news for Future Dreams which receives a 20% contribution from each piece sold. Melissa’s main aim when designing the range was to make women feel confident again. Before she began, she spent time with inspiring Future Dreams supporters Joanna Leviton and Selena Levy, with

their own very personal experiences of breast cancer proving invaluable. Melissa then worked tirelessly to find the right materials. She used designs made from soft microfibre fabric so there were no seams or wiring. When Jacquie was first asked to model the collection she said she felt ‘liberated’ and wanted to show other women who might be experiencing what she was going through a year ago that there is hope. Each style is named after someone whose life has been affected by the disease. Along with the Jacquie, the Joanna and the Selena, there is the Danielle and the Sylvie, named for Future Dreams’ mother-and-daughter founders Sylvie Henry and Danielle Leslie who both passed away after battles with breast cancer within two years of starting the charity. Since it was launched back in 1999, Melissa Odabash as a brand has gone from strength to strength. Complementing the range of swimwear, which is sold in 47 countries around the world, is all manner of beachwear accessories including beach bags, jewellery, sandals and hats. Always happy to come out of her comfort zone, we can tell Melissa loves what she’s doing and we are very lucky to have her on board.

As well as featuring in numerous international private collections, Craig’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery with a portrait of Dame Kelly Holmes, commissioned as part of winning the prestigious BP Portrait Prize. Craig has generously offered to donate a portrait commission for the auction. ‘Drawing and painting from a young age, I have always found the painted portrait infinitely fascinating’, he says. ‘Owning a good portrait painting is something that everyone should do, especially of those we love. They bring us back to those portrayed and make ourselves richer for the experience of looking at them. I am delighted to offer this commission. THE SHAMAN

in Stilettos Anna Hunt on stress, inner peace, and getting the most from life.

U

pon completing her MA in modern history at Cambridge, Anna started her journalism career making

documentaries for Channel 4, before moving into newspapers. She established herself as a celebrity interviewer and by 27, she was features editor of The Mail On Sunday’s Night & Day Magazine, the highest-selling newspaper supplement in the UK. A three-month sabbatical in Peru led to her meeting a shaman who – despite her cynicism – cured her stress-induced health challenges, and then offered her the once

in a lifetime opportunity to become his apprentice and study the ancient healing arts passed down orally in strict secrecy from shaman to shaman for over 40,000 years. The Shaman In Stilettos,

“My ability to empathise has increased hugely and I get more out of people, yet I’m less worried about what they think of me.” – Robert, 39, a high-level executive accountant at ICAP talking to The Sunday Times about working with Anna Hunt.

published by Penguin and described as ‘the English Eat, Pray, Love’ by The Daily Mail, is her memoir. 12 years later, Anna still writes for The Daily Mail and The Sunday Times. She lectures internationally to corporations, such as Greenpeace, and she leads international retreats, workshops and oneon-one consults with her portfolio of private and corporate clients. Anna distils the very best from shamanic techniques, and blends them with a cutting-edge modern technique that draws on the principles of quantum physics, to assist her clients in handling the inevitable challenges of daily life, and attaining sustainable inner peace. In her hands, Shamanism becomes accessible, dynamic and relevant spirituality for the 21st century.

STASHA the stars

tasha was born in Johannesburg and moved to London when she was seven with her brother and parents. She went to the Hampshire school and studied at The Arts Educational schools followed by Cambridge Arts Tutors. Stasha has always been drawn to the Arts and has always had a passion for creativity, in whatever form it happened to manifest itself, “I was lucky enough to grow up with extremely talented and creative parents, who have influenced me all my life which has always made me think outside the box”. Stasha is nothing but a perfectionist with whatever project she chooses to focus on, which is evidenced by her innovative career to date. This includes her past three exhibitions: REACTION (2005), SOFT (2006), and COLOUR (2012) as well as “How To Feed A Man”, a beautiful book with a collection of personal recipes and inspirational thoughts on home entertaining. Now Stasha is back on the London Art scene, dazzling us once more with her heartfelt collection of land and seascapes entitled, …and the Stars Shine Down… at the Saatchi Gallery.

Different to her past work, Stasha has further evolved her technique to produce her first collection, using only conventional brushes as opposed to her usual freestyle painting method (using only her hands): “Though I was painting from an emotional state, I needed the control of brushes to produce what I wanted.” The work this time has taken Stasha much longer to complete with hours and sometime days in the studio working on the meticulous canvases of stars that grace most of her paintings and have become a recurring theme in her current work. The collection is both inspired by and dedicated to those she has lost, “The loss of a parent rendered me a child. So I drew like a child because I am a child, I am my Father’s child. I see now the people I have lost in the stars. My Father is a star, forever in an eternity of sky. I may have lost but I did not lose.” For further information on Stasha and her work, please contact Vanessa on vanessa@vanessaflynn.co.uk or 07767497608 FUTUREDREAMS.ORG.UK | 41

has very generously offered to go for dinner, with a cast member at STK London along with two tickets to the show with a meet for drinks during the interval. The musical is showing at The Phoenix Theatre, 110 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0JP.

We spoke to Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham, the musical.

BRITISH FILM DIRECTOR

42 | REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2015

Gurinder, how did you first become involved with Future Dreams? A good friend of mine who is on their charity committee invited me to a lady’s lunch at the Dorchester last year. It was a fantastic event and I was deeply moved by the testimonies of the women in the charity’s film. Being a North-Londoner, it was particularly relevant to me that Future Dreams House is going to be built in Kings Cross. This facility will offer huge support and comfort to all local women whose lives have been effected by breast cancer and will be a useful one-stop-shop for information, advice and emotional support.

Did you know that Steph Haughton, captain of the British Ladies football team is a Future Dreams ambassador? Yes, I was delighted to hear it. I do feel that the idea behind Bend It like Beckham, with girls playing football, being active and committing to sport is great on many levels – health, vitality, community and empowerment. I’m thrilled that Bend It has helped to encourage more girls and women to play football around the world.

What has your biggest challenge been in producing the musical? I absolutely love my work. Every day I skip to work! We’ve started our previews and the audience response to the show has been amazing. Our biggest challenge is that we are taking a film which is so popular and loved by so many people, and transforming it into a whole new theatrical experience as a West End musical. We are telling the story of the film but making it a musical, I’m allowed to go deeper with each character. It takes you on a emotional journey but it’s also great fun for families and Howard Goodall’s music is moving and inspiring.

What about finding your cast? Was this a struggle for you? To find a perfect cast who can act, dance and sing is a huge task, but luckily in the UK we have a host of talented actors. For the British Asian community there are never enough strong roles so I’m thrilled to be working with a whole new generation of talent that can shine in the same way the cast did in the movie.

What has kept your faith in this project? The original theme of the film – which is all about a 2nd generation British Indian daughter wanting to follow a dream which her father couldn’t – resonated with audiences around the world. It showed how we all want the best for our children and there’s so much more which unites us, than separates us. This show celebrates what is great about Britain right now – the culturally vibrant Britain most of us know and love.

REBECCA FERGUSON SINGS

I

n a career which has seen remarkable highs – 1 million sales of her debut album Heaven comparisons with her heroes Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield and Macy Gray, plaudits from Adele, every major critic in the UK, Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme (the first artist from the X Factor ever to appear on the show), Rebecca herself freely admits that such perfectionism hasn’t come without a price. Her second album Freedom came after a protracted period of huge turmoil as Rebecca found out the hard way that the music industry wasn’t always just about the music. That the album appeared so stridently assertive was an inevitable result of a long and painful gestation period where this artist questioned everything in her creative and professional life. Yet now, having come through the anguish, Ferguson remains both sanguine and resolutely fatalistic. She also now exudes a quiet confidence because Rebecca Ferguson has just made her third album and it’s the album of her life. But, more tellingly, it’s also the album of someone else’s life, someone whose voice and career propelled her to legendary status, whose tragic story is known to every music lover, someone who truly is a legend.

44 | REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2015

Rebecca Ferguson has chosen to remake Billie Holiday’s classic ‘Lady Sings The Blues’. When it was suggested to Ferguson by a friend that she attempt such a Herculean task, one that most singers would run a mile from, her first response was fear. To re record an album that is seen as so untouchable, by an artist who is lauded above most others, an album which went on to spawn a massively successful film starring Diana Ross, an album that is a phenomenon in itself – well, the potential for failure just seemed too huge. An hour later Rebecca Ferguson told her manager that she would do it.

but to her strength of purpose and her absolute dedication to her craft. This is a supreme record by a very special artist.

“Nothing detracts from that voice... from its genuine, solicitous expression of uplifting sentiment.” – The Guardian

“It’s hard not to be struck by the quality of Rebecca Ferguson’s voice: smoky, steeped in emotion and somehow more seasoned than her years.”

Soon after, at a screening of the film held for her team and associates, a massively emotional Ferguson stood in front of everyone and said that she now felt a compulsion to make this record which she hoped would both do justice to the original – Metro and also bring its unique beauty to a new audience. It’s hard to think of any other singer of her generation, in fact of any generation, who would have the chutzpah and the talent to carry this off. That Ferguson has pulled it off, in a quite brilliant reinterpretation of some of the most moving songs you will ever hear in your life, is testament not just to her remarkable talent – THAT VOICE! –

Andaz Hotel LIVERPOOL STREET | LONDON Located in the heart of the City and bordering vibrant East London, the 5-star luxury boutique Andaz London provides the perfect location for leisure and business guests alike. Formerly the Great Eastern, one of London’s original railway hotels, Andaz London is housed in a beautiful redbrick building dating back to 1884. Once inside it transforms into a 21st century masterpiece, a stunning blend of traditional and contemporary features throughout, with 267 beautifully appointed guest rooms and suites, seven fabulous restaurants and bars, fourteen private dining and event spaces and a 24-hour health club, cementing its reputation as one of London’s most stylish hotels.

In 2012 I travelled to London for my chemotherapy treatments which meant staying at the Andaz Liverpool Street hotel. The experience was made easier by the great support from their kind and understanding team. They helped me keep my spirit and dignity through this dark time. It saddens me to know so many struggle through this alone, but fortunately I was privileged to stay at the Andaz, a place that became my haven. I return to stay at the Andaz every time I’m in London, and each trip I can’t wait to reconnect with the extraordinary staff who helped make what could have been an awful experience something I remember with great sentiment. – Barb Shadomy
