Introduction Congratulations to our first group of graduating MA Illustration students. This publication presents and celebrates their fantastic range of projects that include: an exploration of children’s narratives, digital storytelling, dynamic patterns and literary graphic novels. We’re delighted to introduce you to these creatives.

About the MA Illustration course at the University of Portsmouth This new MA in Illustration offers students the opportunity to question, develop and reflect upon their own practice by exploring both traditional and innovative techniques. Through a negotiated project they are encouraged to define the role of a creative practitioner in a broad social, political and historical context. This MA is designed for graduates from arts-based courses and also professionals returning to education to complete ‘unfinished creative business’. The staff team has a wealth of experience and includes internationally renowned practitioners in the fields of artists’ books and zines, practice-based PhDs and printmaking. The course benefits from an extensive and dedicated collection of artists’ books and zines located in the illustration studios. Students consider the question, ‘What is illustration?’ and seek to redefine their own work in this context and cross the traditional boundaries associated with this practice. A strong social awareness ethos underpins the course enabling our students to develop a unique voice within the wider creative industries. Dr Jackie Batey Course Leader

Antonia Antoniou

antoniaantoniou.wordpress.com Childhood Memories I have produced a playful and imaginative textile collection that examines fairy tales through illustration and texture. I researched fairy tales by authors such as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault and Hans Christian Anderson. The aim of this textile collection is to make the viewer reconsider their recollection of fairy tales in order to encourage teenagers and adults to see how the tales can represent our imperfect world. The collection consists of 20 x A3 patterns digitally printed on cotton satin. The prints are derived from my original watercolour paintings and collages, which I then digitally modified. They are intricately decorated with hand embroidery, glass beads, foil and flock detailing. 3D elements are often included within my work.

Illustrator’s Biography Antonia is a textile designer/illustrator living and working in England. Born in Cyprus in 1994, she studied a BA (Hons) in Fashion & Textile Design, before studying for her MA in Illustration. Antonia is an ambitious and hardworking printmaker, with an advanced knowledge of print processes relating to fabric and paper printing. Her work is characterised by explosions of colour and vivid tones, quirky illustrations and abstract collages.

Helene Dollie

www.behance.net/dolliehele9410 Commedia Set in a fictional world, the narrative of my serial webcomic is inspired by 17th and 18th Century Europe. My plot combines power schemes, love and deception. The pages are drawn and inked on paper and then coloured digitally. The webcomic will be available for free on a website and is aimed at teenagers and adults. My aim is that a page will be released every two weeks, starting in 2017.

Illustrator’s Biography Helene is a French artist who works with traditional materials such as graphite and ink, but more recently she has incorporated digital painting into her artwork. With degrees in digital media, animation and illustration, she has a variety of skills and knowledge, ranging from award-winning design to illustrative realism. There is a big sense of the magical and fantasy when you look at Helene’s work - cinema and books are major sources of inspiration for her. She enjoys drawing inspiration from complex plots and rich characters and personalities, paying particular attention to the psychological aspect of human behaviour. This interest in human nature comes from Helene’s passion about character design and fascination with storytelling. Professionally, she currently works as a freelance graphic designer/illustrator within the creative industries. 6

Chris Essel

christopheressel.wordpress.com Cressel I have developed a new methodology known as ‘geometric abstraction’ which is influenced by the number four. I have created a series of repeat pattern designs in order to make bespoke fabric scarves. The patterns, using my illustrations, are inspired by line and colour combinations from my own photographic references of architecture and landscape. I then combine these with the vibrant, loud and explosive colours of Ghanaian textiles to create vibrant new designs.

Illustrator’s Biography Chris is an illustrator and textile designer working in London. He is the creator of ‘Cressel’ a fashion line specialising in bespoke scarves for men and women. He studied BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Portsmouth where he created a series of limited edition pattern fabric prints on the theme of ‘nostalgia’. Chris is now extending his illustration through his MA into large scale patterned fabrics that can adapt to a wealth of different cultures around the world.

Kilends Tan

kilends.wixsite.com/artist How To Be A Bad Child in One Week I have produced a series of seven artist’s books each consisting of a concertina. Each book describes a typical anti-social behaviour in a child in a humorous way. This project highlights behavioural issues in children in order to raise awareness. The books are sequential with the anti-social episodes increasing in complexity.

Illustrator’s Biography Kilends was born in 1990 in Chongqing, China. He completed a BA in Engineering in China in 2013 and studied an MA in Automation before coming to England to study art. He has been working freelance for more than five years for a variety of clients such as UESTC (ranked in the top 10 universities of China). He has also acted as a consultant for a UK-China education institute. It is Kilend’s sincere belief that we should not be limited in what we study, that we can always become who we want to be and that it is never too late to learn new skills. His engineering background has supported his new direction in the creative industries. He has the analytical mind and logical thinking that engineering students are proud of, but he also possess the spirit of creation and innovation that belongs to the artist. Kilend’s illustrations show a combination of rationality and perception, the space between the expected and unexpected.
