‘COSTALOT’ ROLE PLAY Teacher Notes In small groups, ask one student in the group to be Raj (Manager), one to be Sally (employee), and the rest of the group to be observers. Each needs to be provided with the relevant details below, but should not be allowed to see each others’ instructions. Printable versions of the instructions below are available for students in the resources area. Once ‘Sally’ and ‘Raj’ have completed the role play, observers should provide feedback and discuss as a group the observers’ findings as well as identifying:   

What went well? What could have been improved? How did the group apply lessons from ‘We Were Soldiers’ and from the Living Leadership model?

Raj: You are a Manager at Costalot Supermarket. You are new to the company and understand that your predecessor was a difficult man. The employees did not respect him but feared him. You do not want to be seen in the same way but neither do you want employees to take advantage of you. Sally has been a good employee who has not had any performance issues up to this point. But, when you review the time sheets for last month, you notice that she was late on four different occasions. You check your records and there is no record for any request to come in late. You have therefore requested a meeting with Sally to address the issue. To make matters worse, Sally has arrived ten minutes late for the meeting.

Sally: You are a good employee and like your job. However, recently, your elderly mother has become ill and you have to tend to her before you come to work and, as a result, you have been late a few times in the last month. You haven't felt that you needed to share this with anyone at work. One reason for this is because lots of people are often late so what difference does it make it you are a few times each month? Also, your previous Manager was a difficult man who ensured that personal problems were left at the door when you came to work and believed that your home life shouldn't interfere with your job. This Manager has now left but your new manager, Raj, has requested a meeting with you. Unfortunately, you forgot about this and have just arrived ten minutes late.

Observers: Observe and record the following (and be prepared to provide feedback and discuss):      

How quickly/easily is the problem of Sally’s lateness identified? How quickly/easily are the issues influencing the lateness identified? Is Raj sincere? Firm? Compassionate? In control? Kind? Something else? Do they achieve a collaborative/shared solution? How are Sally and Raj likely to feel about each other at the end of this meeting? Was the issue resolved successfully? Why?
