Jenny Leigh Freeman Project A graduate group project focusing on creating online brand & marketing strageties to increase our client presence in the country music industry. We created video production shoot, social networking sites such as mycoutryspace.com, twitter, iLike.com, and myspace.com. A interactive website was built adding rich media to engage the user and potiential music industry professionals.
Jenny Leigh Freeman Project Jenny Leigh Freeman is a country artist who was in need of an online presence to boost her music career. Based on my research of country music, I places our client on several social media sites such as twitter and mycountryspace. In this project, I was the set designer, videographer, photographer, social network manager and video editor. As a group we came up with a theme elements of bricks and vines because Jenny is a country artist living in the Baltimore area. So it gives a feel of country and urban at simultaneously. (Above picture)
A sketch created in Illustrator of what the set. (Below picture)
I added certain elements such as candles, flowers, vines, and burgundy satin fabric. I want to create an intimate mood for the video shoot but keeping it simplistic at the same time. I didn’t want to take away from the focal point which was our artist, Jenny.
EARTH - La Flor is a university located in Costa Rica who stands firm on biodiversity and sustainability. This was a group project and I served as Project Manager and Producer overseeing nine graduate students. We built two websites (in both English and Spanish) adding video and interactive content to enhance the user experience and ultimately market and brand the programs the La Flor has to offered. My role as Project Manager and Producer, I focused on researching the Costa Rican culture and EARTH University, scheduling, maintaining timeline, and making sure we as team are meeting the client’s goals and purpose.

Monday, January 11, 2010 Agrotour trough La Flor: Mango, Rice and Sugar Cane What is Agro-tourism? • •
The concept of agrotourism is a direct expansion of ecotourism, which encourages visitors to experience agricultural life at first hand. Agrotourism is gathering strong support from small communities as rural people have realized the benefits of sustainable development brought about by similar forms of nature travel. Visitors have the opportunity to work in the fields alongside real farmers and wade knee-deep in the sea with fishermen hauling in their nets.

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 – Three Tourism Spots in Guanacaste Beaches
Panamá Beach •
• •
Offers tourists stunning ocean views and laidback beaches that are within close range of some of the country’s best national parks, such as the Refugio Costa Esmeralda and the Marino las Baulas de Guanacaste. There are many local restaurants, bars and shopping areas close by. Most of the year, this beach is excellent for all kinds of water sports and fishing. Snorkeling, kayaking and sailing are also popular here. When at the beach don’t forget to visit the Rocha estuary with its lovely mangrove swamp and the nearby a dry forest, both of which are within walking distance from the shore.
•
Nearby the beach is the grand Four Seasons Hotel with its Arnold Palmer championship golf course.
Nascascolo •
• •
A small beach at the north of Guanacaste, with grey coloured sand and blue water, hidden in Culebra Bay. It has moderate tourist development, which makes it ideal for relaxing. It has hotels, cabins, lodges and areas suitable for camping. Ideal for bathers for his gentle waves, also to practice diving Relatively close to the Daniel Oduber International Airport
Playas del Coco • •
• • •
•
•
The largest village in Guanacaste province Known primarily as the gateway for surfers to reach places like Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock, where the waves are superb, this busy beach is a prime scuba diving spot, with many tour and dive companies set up here. A very popular area for sport fishing The beach of Playas del Coco itself is a grayish brown and the tide here often remains quite low. Surrounded by steep cliffs and hills, this horseshoe shaped bay area is the ideal place to have some fun. However, if you are looking for a quiet spot to relax, try staying away from the center of town, where most of the fun happens. From Playas del Coco you can also head out to Pelonas Islands, Catalinas and Bat Islands, which are excellent sites to spot turtles, sharks and octopuses in the natural environment. Many tourists also use Playas del Coco as a base camp because of its affordable accommodations, when touring the Guanacaste region.

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 – Rural Tourism Rural tourism – consider an “alternative vacation,” Many campesino families, fishing families, and indigenous communities are achieving their dream of sharing their knowledge and their joie de vivre with the new friends that come to visit them through tourism. People who choose rural community tourism get to participate in everyday life, and feel more like guests than like tourists. “Rural community tourism consists of planned touristic experiences which are integrated sustainably with the rural environment and developed by local citizen organizations for the benefit of the community.” --Costa Rican Tourism Board, UNDP and the Alliance for Rural Community Tourism, 2005)
The six characteristics that define rural community tourism are that it: 1 - Integrates natural beauty and the daily life of rural communities 2 - Promotes productive sustainable practices within its tourism offerings 3 - Adapts itself to the dynamics of rural life and preserves the idiosyncrasies and the welcoming, relaxed, rustic atmosphere that characterize the rural areas of the country. 4 - Is maintained by local initiative and participation, and strengthens local organizations, which are made up of various families or of the community as a whole. 5 - Integrates the local populace in this economic activity, distributes the benefits evenhandedly, and supplements farming income. 6 - Promotes land ownership by the local population. Dedicated to the generation of innovative ideas aiming to promote development through an entrepreneurial spirit, social justice, technological innovation and the creation of alternatives to protect the environment. EARTH started to take actions such as the recovery and diversification of crops, infrastructure improvements and the harvesting and selling of mangos, sugarcane, citrus and cattle. EARTH has also made strategic alliances with local enterprises, municipalities and non-governmental organizations with the goal of developing projects to improve the management of the Liberia River watershed, promoting waste management and to participate in the Regional Commission of the Guanacaste Conservation Area. The University is preparing to start construction of its academic campus, basic grain production and to develop clean energy initiatives in the region. “The solution to the problems, and successful actions to confront the challenges of the Dry Tropics, must be full of innovation, entrepreneurship as well as of social and environmental responsibility. We want to make this campus a replicable and affordable example for our students, entrepreneurs, partners, scientists, professionals of diverse fields, and for our beneficiaries in the tropics, committed to contributing to the solution of real problems” - Engineer and economist Carlos G. Fashion meets Web 3.0
Interactive marketing Behind the Runway Senior Capstone Project
Fashion Meets Web 3.0 Interactive Marketing behind the Runway By: Kenya Ford
10
Abstract As a result of the Internet, it has force every industry to reevaluate their marketing platform and expand it to higher heights. It has been an extraordinary growth inside the fashion industry of social networking tools, especially twitter. Social networking media has allowed the fashion industry to become more personal with their followers. And followers have created a parasocial relationship with the designer and the brand. Interactive websites are dramatically increasing over the Web, introducing users to an experience as they navigate through a site. The downfall with interactive sites is either 1) the site was created for the user to participate with the interaction of the site and the navigation was too difficult or 2) the user completely missed the interaction part. First, an interactive site needs to be a necessity for the target audience and must convey a user experience. It must have a purpose and ultimately promote the brand of the site and initiate the user to venture to the site again and invite others to come and enjoy the experience as well. In our society, mobile devices have become a staple. Mobile applications are the current trend many companies are undertaking, making it easier for them to connect with their target audience. Creating a website that is mobile friendly and pairing it with a mobile application so the user can readily have access to the company’s brand is huge marketing strategy. So many industries are looking towards the future of interactivity in the mobile spectrum. In this capstone project, I propose to showcase marketing within the Web 2.0 space by using social networking tools, an interactive website and mobile media as vehicles to promote the fashion industry. My client is DRC, a revolutionary fashion line that stands on the platform of global Pan African social awareness throughout their designs. In my research of fashion marketing, I will utilize various marketing strategies to increase the traffic to the DRC website which will generate strong following ultimately increasing sales. I will measure the analytics of the site before and after the project has been launch to show if the marketing strategies executed will be a success. I will employ the following marketing strategies:
Social Networking: o Facebook o Twitter o Blog o LinkedIn Interactive Website: o Adding rich media such as video elements o Interactive map of the global issues o Online community for discussion forums Mobile Media: o Compatible mobile site o Mobile application prototype Email Marketing: o Online media kit
Venues The possible venues for this capstone project will be on the Web and mobile devices.
Capstone Timeline
February (15th - 28th) • Research interactive market stragties and what will work best for my client, DRC • Start framing stories for the videos • Research mobile applications and start designing a prototype • Design templates layout for the various components • Start working on scripting stories and creating storyboards • Consult with client of design layouts (likes & dislikes)
March • Work on creating a consistent theme between the social networking sites (i.e. design & content) • Video client for promotional video, interactive map stories • Continue to work on mobile media - build a mobile website and prototype • Video editing • Build interactive map • Complete social network site
April • Complete the video editing • Create online newsletter • Complete the Interactive map • Creative way to show the fashion merchandise • Complete mobile site • Complete mobile prototype • Finish any loose ends • Start troubleshooting
May • Launch the new interactive website and measure the stats • Perform email marketing and utilizing the social networking tools to generate audience to the site
Learning outcomes & Impact your project will make on this society I intend to learn how to market a client by maximizing their online presence and exceeding their goals. From a technical standpoint, I will understand CSS, Flash, email marketing, social network, search engine optimization, analytics and HTML which will give me the competitive advantage in classifying myself as an interactive professional in marketing and branding. I believe this capstone project will shed light on any industry on the best way to capitalize on online marketing strategies. Many companies are presently on social networking site such as Facebook and Twitter; however, don’t know how to apply the tool. Some companies just have these social sites to say they have one but having a social networking site requires a continual dialogue with the user. Even though we are in this high technology society, people still want interpersonal relationship. Consumers want to feel a part of the brand and not the car salesman mentality. This capstone will show the purpose and how to utilize social networking tools & to produce a user experience by creating a storytelling interactive site. Hopefully, this capstone will be a model for Fortunate 500 to small business owners of the best way to take full advantage of the Web.

PE NO CHAO "If you translate it word for word it means bare feet on the ground. But to me it means so much more than that. I say this because a lot of people in Brazil walk around barefoot... but it is normal. So it is almost like people can relate to it ... ya know. The people who walk around bare foot do not really care about what the next man is thinking, they are free spirits and just go with the flow. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that these people are broke, because that's not the case. On a side bar, this could also mean "Put Your Foot Down" which could represent you putting your foot down for PEACE ... meaning YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE ... THE FIGHTING AND THE VIOLENCE MUST STOP."

Interactive Media Affecting Social Change within Communities: Focusing on African-American women dealing with breast cancer Independent Study Project Spring 2010
Interactive Media Affecting Social Change within Communities Focusing on African – American women dealing with breast cancer Statistics:
Black/African American women under the age of 40 are more likely to develop breast cancer than white women in the same age bracket; tumors are more aggressive; and tend to be especially deadly. Because of the biological and racial differences in breast cancer mortality, research studies have concluded that early and frequent breast cancer screenings are essential to increasing the survival advantages for black women. While the nationally recommended age for mammograms and breast exams is age 40, the AABCA and other African American health officials recommend earlier breast cancer detection screenings and mammograms to help reduce the numbers of deaths within the black population.
Breast cancer has been a catalyst in deaths within the African American community. Creating this platform could be a growing trend for marketing other social, health issues and create a groundswell. This is an independent study project which consists of two components: a research paper and multimedia content management system. My ultimate goal is to develop awareness and provide an online forum for African-Americans dealing with breast cancer. The multimedia content management system will include the following: • • • • • • • • •
Preventive measures Testimonials Nutritional guidance Beauty tips Support group Medical advice for professionals Online community Promotional video Create online banners for Facebook, etc. to generate user to the site
The site will either be built on one of the following platforms: • • • •
