HAMMER TIME!

Thor: The Dark World brings us more adventures with the mighty Norse god...

T

he look of the film is a lot bigger than what we did previously,” Chris Hemsworth, aka the mighty Norse god known as Thor, told MTV while halfway through filming his latest adventure. “The first one worked and people loved it, but this is with a different director and just has a totally different feel. There’s a definite Game Of Thrones vibe.” There are two reasons why this superhero sequel might resemble the hugely successful HBO show: director Alan Taylor helmed six episodes of the TV series, and both the film 4 odeon.co.uk

and the series have filmed on location in Iceland. This makes sense, given that the country closely resembles the Scandinavian backdrop of the mythology around Thor, but it also serves another purpose: making Thor: The Dark World look significantly different from the last film he appeared in, a little adventure named Avengers Assemble. Thor most definitely isn’t in New York any more! Set one year after the events of his Avengers team-up, Thor is back at home in Asgard. However, rather than chilling out and drinking a relaxing tankard of mead, he soon finds himself battling a threat from

an ancient race led by Christopher Eccleston’s revenge-fuelled Malekith. To defeat him, Thor must reunite with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster (which is tricky because his dad, Odin – played by Anthony Hopkins – doesn’t approve of their relationship) and his dangerous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). This is clearly not an ideal situation, given that Loki caused so much trouble in both Thor and the Avengers film! Will their unlikely partnership hold? Will Malekith succeed in his plan to bring darkness to the universe? Find out when Thor: The Dark World opens on 30 October.

Closed Circuit, a tough British thriller starring Eric Bana, poses some interesting questions... here are over half a million closed circuit cameras in London,” explains Martin Vickers, played by Eric Bana, at one point during Closed Circuit. “And I’m sure there are at least half a dozen watching you right now...” Alarming stuff, as we’re sure you’ll agree. Lawyer Vickers finds this out for himself when he gets involved in the case of a man accused of setting off an explosion in a London market. Is the guy innocent, or is it really a British Secret Service cover-up? Who’s watching who? One thing’s for certain: Vickers and his lawyer colleague Claudia (Rebecca Hall) have bitten off more than they can chew... Band of brothers You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Australian Hemsworth clan – brothers Liam, Chris and Luke – are on course to take over Hollywood. Funnily enough, it’s probably because they are...

PHOTOs: Getty Images, Murray Close.

Liam Hemsworth

Age: 23 Oz soap opera starting point: One episode of Home And Away. Then spent two years on Neighbours as Josh Taylor. Notable roles to date: Liam lost out to big bro Chris for the role of Thor, and had that loss compounded when he was cast in The Expendables and then cut out of the film (he was back for The Expendables 2). He’s made up for it since, nabbing the role of Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games. You’ll see him next in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (pictured below) on 22 November, not to mention its two sequels (Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, out next year and 2015).

Chris Hemsworth

Age: 29 Oz soap opera starting point: A guest role in Neighbours before starring as Kim Hyde in Home And Away for three years. Notable roles to date: He hit the big time as Thor in two films (Thor and Avengers Assemble), as well as in Thor: The Dark World, out on 30 October. He’s also starred in horror comedy Cabin In The Woods, bleak fairy tale Snow White And The Huntsman and, of course, this month’s F1 racing drama Rush. Most people first spotted him as James T Kirk’s doomed dad in the first Star Trek film – he went from there to Thor so quickly it’s as though it was simply meant to be...

Luke Hemsworth

Age: 32 Oz soap opera starting point: He’s played two characters in Neighbours. That show (plus Home And Away) is a rite of passage for Aussie actors, rather like Holby City or Casualty are for our British thesps! Notable roles to date: Luke may be the oldest Hemsworth brother but he’s been the slowest at building a film career, sticking firmly to television... although that’s about to change! Luke has leading roles in upcoming thriller The Reckoning, sci-fi drama The Anomaly and WWII drama The 34th Battalion (alongside Vinnie Jones). Will he hit as big as his little brothers have? In the ’70s, James Hunt and Niki Lauda were the kings of Formula 1 racing. They were also rivals who lived extraordinary lives – as chronicled in the thrilling drama Rush…

B

ack in 2011, director Ron Howard was working diligently on an adaptation of Stephen King’s epic fantasy series The Dark Tower: a huge saga that had the potential to take up several years of his life. Then the studio, balking at the cost and complexity of the project, pulled the plug. Howard had nothing to do. Being one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors, however, it wasn’t long before a new film came his way. Based on an extraordinary real-life story, it was one hell of a project... “The James Hunt/Niki Lauda rivalry is one of the greatest in all of sports,” Howard says. “Their story is so remarkable that you could only do it if it was true, because people wouldn’t quite believe it!”

Amazing race

The year is 1976, and Formula 1 racing has become a gigantic force in the sporting world, with its racing drivers attracting the kind of headlines, acclaim and hysteria usually reserved for rock stars. The two shining lights on the racetrack are Britain’s James Hunt (played on screen by Chris Hemsworth) and Austria’s Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). The former is a handsome playboy who loves to party; the latter a hardworking, dedicated sportsman unwilling to be distracted from his goal. “Hunt lived the rock’n’roll life, but he had the talent to still put himself in the car and go like hell,” Howard points out.

Formula 1 racing: not for those who don’t like speed!

Screenwriter Peter Morgan, already accomplished in bringing the ’70s to life with Frost/Nixon, agrees. “Niki approached it as rationally and as professionally as possible, whereas James Hunt was a flamboyant ladies’ man.” But there was a lot more to both men once they hit the track. “One of the fascinating aspects about that story is that fearlessness that these guys had,” says Brühl admiringly. “Like modern knights, constantly facing death.” And Lauda’s fearlessness paid off, as we see in the film: the three-time world champion was 16 odeon.co.uk

able to climb back behind the wheel after an utterly horrific crash. “They were willing to risk their lives to attain this elite status,” Howard explains. “They paid a price for it. They paid a price for it, but they defined themselves.”

Fast and furious

Recreating the heart-stopping races on Germany’s infamous Nürburgring track, among others, was a tough job for the crew. Yet there’s a satisfyingly small amount of noticeable CGI racing in the film. Both Hemsworth and Brühl actually learned how to drive race cars

– although Howard wasn’t as proficient, admitting that he “spun” his car when he tried. However, he made sure he did his homework on the sport before tackling the film. “I’ve been spending a lot of time around Formula 1 tracks and talking to people connected to the sport,” he told The Hollywood Reporter during the filming of Rush. “I’ve met Niki Lauda a few times. I sat with him during the race at Silverstone Circuit, and his commentary was so riveting I didn’t even dare get up to go to the bathroom!” The actors also had help perfecting their performances.

James Hunt died in 1993, but Hemsworth was able to talk to his son as well as Alastair Caldwell, the McLaren team manager during Hunt’s reign. Meanwhile, Brühl actually had Lauda on speed dial! “He would call Lauda on set, sometimes just before a take, and ask, ‘Do I take my gloves off first or my helmet?’” Howard recalls, laughing.

The way they went about the business of trying to be great was, I thought, emotional, cool and fascinating.” Brühl is the one who best sums up the lure of this timeless sporting story. “It’s about friendship, it’s about fear, it’s about overcoming fear,” he says. “It’s about rivals who push each other beyond the limits.” You’ll see all of this and more when Rush opens in cinemas on 13 September.

MUST-SEE OF THE MONTH

ABOUT TIME 12A RELEASED 4 SEPTEMBER

DIRECTOR Richard Curtis STARRING Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy

W

e’ve all been there, haven’t we? That moment when you see someone you fancy, muster the courage to go over and introduce yourself... and then say something so utterly foolish that you want to bury your head in the nearest sandpit. It’s certainly happened to Tim (Domhnall Gleeson), who has such bad luck when he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) that only going back in time and undoing his goof-ups would 26 odeon.co.uk

make things better. Luckily for him, though, he can do just that! After his father, played by Bill Nighy, reveals a big secret, everything changes. Men in their family can travel in time: all they have to do is go somewhere dark, clench their fists and concentrate. Soon Tim is bouncing backwards and fixing problems all over the place – and because About Time is both written and directed by Richard Curtis,

the film follows in the footsteps of all his classics (Four Weddings And A Funeral; Notting Hill; Love Actually) and focuses on one thing: love. Tim is determined to control his love life, but it’s not quite as straightforward as he thinks it is... and there are other things that he can’t control, despite his powers. A wonderful cast, a sweet premise and all of Curtis’s usual wit and warmth make About Time a delightful British comedy.

In The Time-Traveller’s Wife Rachel McAdams also played a character dating someone who could travel in time. It seems to be quite common!

Watch the trailer Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson get all lovey-dovey.

When Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, the world was stunned. As the former wife of Prince Charles, a fashion icon and a role model to generations of young women, Diana lived her life in the glare of publicity... and yet, as this film reveals, she still managed to keep a lot of secrets. Starring two-time Oscarnominated Naomi Watts, Diana explores the last two years of the Princess’s life and shows us another side of the woman who wanted to be known as the “Queen of hearts”. The film focuses on her campaign against landmines, her constant battle with the media and the last significant relationships of her life: one with eminent surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan (Lost star Naveen Andrews) and the other with the man who sadly joined her on her final journey, Dodi Fayed (Cas Anvar). Directed by Downfall’s Oliver Hirschbiegel, Diana is a sensitive biopic for anyone interested in one of the world’s most famous women. fanatical about film 27

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 3D TBC RELEASED 25 OCTOBER DIRECTORS Cody Cameron, Kris Pearn VOICES OF Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Neil Patrick Harris

In 2009, a young inventor by the name of Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) devastated his simple little town by building a device that could make food rain from the sky. Although it solved a shortterm problem by feeding the population, the food continued to rain down until the place was totally buried... Oops. Now, in this delightful sequel – which makes full use of its 3D format – Flint returns to Swallow Falls determined to make amends. What greets him is a whole new world: a place where food has evolved and achieved sentient life! There are bananas that can run, burgers that bite, tacos that attack people (rather like the T-rex from Jurassic Park, in fact) and even monkey/seafood hybrids named shrimpanzees. With all these creatures running riot, what can Flint do? If you loved the first Meatball outing you can’t afford to miss out on this one. Expect more bonkers fun for all the family!

George Clooney giggles with a fan... eorge Clooney’s political drama The Ides Of March saw him co-starring with Ryan Gosling as a presidential candidate who may have a few skeletons in his closet. While the film itself was a very serious affair, its UK premiere, on 19 October 2011 at ODEON Leicester Square, certainly wasn’t. As you can see, Clooney stopped to have a chuckle with a young fan as he signed autographs! The actor is back in cinemas on 11 October, this time alongside Sandra Bullock in the tense 3D drama Gravity.
