22 Jump Street

The mismatched undercover cops have the ride of their lives in their second cinema outing…

T

wo years ago buddy-cop comedy 21 Jump Street stormed into cinemas and became a genuine smash-hit. Based on the US TV show which began in 1987 and lasted five seasons – the series that made Johnny Depp a star, no less – the big-screen remake cast Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as two young cops who find themselves working together despite 4 odeon.co.uk

their different backgrounds (Tatum’s Jenko was the highschool jock; Hill’s Schmidt was a dork). Infiltrating a local high school pretending to be pupils to uncover a drug ring, their antics were crazy enough to make you forget the fact that both actors were clearly too old to pass as schoolkids (shhhh…). For the sequel, the duo’s headquarters have been changed – moving across the

street to, er, 22 Jump Street – but they’re still working undercover, this time in a college. But can they keep their fraught relationship together as they both deal with different college experiences and issues? 22 Jump Street, which co-stars the legend that is Nick Offerman (from Parks & Recreation) as their longsuffering boss, is a bundle of laughs from start to finish. See it from 6 June!

COVER ME! Jenko and Schmidt have now gone undercover in a school and a college. Compared to some gigs, that’s actually pretty tame…

Did You Know?

Johnny Depp, who starred in the original TV show, reprised his role for the film version of 21 Jump Street, as did co-star Peter DeLuise.

A Beauty Queen Sandra Bullock’s all-business FBI agent goes undercover at a beauty pageant to hunt down a terrorist. Seeing as she’s used to handcuffs and trousers instead of bracelets and gowns, she’s hardly a natural fit for the role and fish-out-ofwater laughs ensue.

Undercover as…

A Terrorist (With A New Face) FBI Agent Sean Archer goes undercover – or under-skin – to bring down crazy guy Castor Pollux. To do this, he needs Castor’s face: cue surgery. But then the real Castor nicks his face in return! Was Nicolas Cage playing bad or was John Travolta playing good? It was all rather confusing...

Undercover as…

A Teacher After a string of tough-guy roles (as well as a bemused brother in his first comedy, Twins), Arnie really stretched his laughter chops in 1990’s Kindergarten Cop. He’s undercover in a school as a teacher while hunting a drug dealer. The kids walk all over him. Literally…

1 The film picks up several years after the end of 2011’s Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, with the human race scarred yet defiant. 2 This is the first film in the franchise to feature the Dinobots, who can transform into dinosaurs – including a triceratops, a velociraptor, a spinosaurus and a T-rex! Oh, and a terrifying flying pteranodon… 3 Mark Wahlberg headlines as an inventor named Cade Yeager, with Bates Motel star Nicola Peltz as his daughter, Tessa, and Jack Reynor as her race-car-driving boyfriend.

4 The old Transformer favourites are still here: Cade finds the wreckage of Optimus Prime and later he’s joined by Bumblebee, Hound, Ratchet, Crosshairs and Drift. 5 Responding to critics who weren’t impressed by the comedic tone of Dark Of The Moon, director Michael Bay has reassured audiences: “I focused on keeping this one slick. There won’t be any goofiness.” Transformers: Age Of Extinction 3D is released on 10 July.

Sharp Shooting! It’s bullet time with Charlize Theron in A Million Ways To Die In The West… he latest film from Seth MacFarlane – the man behind the outrageous teddy bear comedy Ted – moves us back in time to Arizona, 1882, and the deadly world of the American Wild West. And by “deadly” we really do mean “deadly”, because A Million Ways To Die In The West is correctly named… MacFarlane plays Albert, a humble sheep farmer whose timid ways lose him the love of his life, Louise (Amanda Seyfried). Unfortunately for him, however, Anna’s husband – a notorious gunslinger played by Liam Neeson – soon arrives in town... and he’s gunning for Albert! Mutants young and old fight for the survival of the world in X-Men: Days Of Future Past…

A

s you all no doubt know, Patrick Stewart plays the older version of Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. James McAvoy, meanwhile, plays Charles’s younger self in prequel X-Men: First Class. In the latest film, thanks to the paradoxical powers of time-travel, the two actors finally get to share a moment on screen – as the same character, separated by decades. “It’s weird, because when I took over the role of Charles, I never thought that I’d be working with him,” explains McAvoy of filming alongside Stewart. “I never thought I’d give a similar 12 odeon.co.uk

performance to him. I certainly never thought that I’d be giving a very different performance to him to his face. Kind of going like, ‘Yo, what you got, man? Show me your big nose! We’ve got big noses together!’” He laughs. “There’s a profile shot with both our noses together. Conk to conk.” We get the pleasure of seeing both of these noses in one place in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, adapted from one of the Marvel mutants’ most famous adventures: Chris Claremont’s 1980 comic-book run of the same name. Some of the action takes place in our time, where the mutants we know from the

first few films in the franchise – including Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Halle Berry’s Storm and Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde – are battling a terrifying enemy. The rest takes place in the past, to which the ageless Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has travelled so that he can prevent the disasters of the future from happening. This entails trying to stop the unleashing of giant robots called Sentinels, who are trying to eradicate mutants from the world. The last time we saw Charles, he’d been betrayed by friend Erik (Michael Fassbender) and almost-sister Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), not to mention finding himself paralysed after the explosive events at the end of X-Men: First Class. “You’ll find him very different,” explains McAvoy of this sequel, which takes place in the ’70s, the decade after First Class. “Not just because he’s got long

hair, but because of what he is and how shaky his soul is… He’s lost the ability to be able to empathise with other people, because it’s too painful for him. Why? Because he’s been given all of his own pain to deal with. “It’s a movie about all of us, about all the guys in the X-Men,” McAvoy continues, “but I suppose the person with the biggest journey is arguably

me. Because I change more than anybody by the end of the film compared to the beginning.” SIDEBURNS LOCKED ‘N’ LOADED Returning to play Logan for the seventh time is Hugh Jackman, who joined the film a few months after starring in his own spin-off blockbuster, The Wolverine. “I grew the sideburns and away we go Patrick Stewart (older Xavier) with director Bryan Singer.

X-Men: Days Of The Future Past 3D Seeitfrom 22 May again!” he laughs. Wolvie’s got some heavy duty fighting in Days Of Future Past: “You do see battling, in the future and in the past. And not just me battling (the Sentinels), but all the characters. It’s exciting after doing two Wolverine movies in a row to see how the X-Men work together.” He’s also full of praise for director Bryan Singer’s vision. “It’s important to him to create Magneto and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) have a bust-up.

the most incredible time-travel movie of all time,” he says. “It’s a very epic, big, big movie.” SENTINEL THREAT Singer himself, meanwhile, is excited about the Sentinels. “There are movies like Transformers, Iron Man and Pacific Rim that have already explored robots of all different sizes, shapes, scope and calibre. I knew that to make another ‘robot attacks people’ movie is (not original), yet they are an element in the picture. So they serve the story: not necessarily in an obvious, ‘rock-em-sockem’ battle at the end of the movie, although there is that.” The creator of these robots is Bolivar Trask, played by Peter Dinklage, a superstar these days thanks to his role as Tyrion Lannister in one of the world’s most acclaimed TV shows. “I’m a big fan of Game Of Thrones, so I’m a fan of his,” Singer explains about his

casting choice. “But I also like the idea of not a very big guy building very big robots, something ironically interesting about that.” Veteran producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who’s been involved in the X-Men films since they began in 2000, is confident that Days Of Future Past will be a success. “My mandate to myself since I’ve been involved in these movies was ‘make every single movie different, so there’s never X-Men fatigue’,” she says. “What I loved about what Matthew Vaughn did (in First Class) was that he made it a Bond movie. And James Mangold, with The Wolverine, made a noir. And Bryan… what he’s doing is bringing back the classic X-Men that we had before, the classic cast.” She nods. “It’s the right way to do it.” X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens on 22 May.

THINGS TO COME

With X-Men: Apocalypse set to follow this film in 2016, how do the filmmakers see the rest of the franchise’s future shaping up? Lauren Shuler Donner, producer: “We

Charles (James McAvoy) is darker this time round. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in full mutant mode.

have to figure out how many X-Men films a summer can handle without getting into X-Men fatigue!”

Bryan Singer, director: “You can’t just whip up that formula and go, ‘Uh, here is my Gambit movie and my Deadpool movie, this movie and that movie, and they’re all gonna be hits!’ You’ve got to take care with each one.” James McAvoy: “X-Men will always be around. There’s an endearing and an enduring quality to the material that I don’t think we could possibly screw up so much that it disappears.”

Pat prepares to be a talent show star!

POSTMAN PAT: the movie 3D U RELEASED 23 May

DIRECTOR Mike Disa VOICES OF Stephen Mangan, Rupert Grint, David Tennant

Postman Pat makes his first delivery to the big screen in this charming 3D film for all the family. Voiced by Stephen Mangan, the world’s most famous mail-deliverer is up to his usual tricks in the sleepy

village of Greendale when a television talent show arrives in search of a star. Pat auditions – with Ronan Keating providing his singing voice – and soon his life changes completely! But what of his post route? Who will deliver letters in his absence? When plans are unveiled for a Pat robot with a scary robotblack-and-white-cat at its side, there’s trouble!

The voice of Postman Pat tells ODEON why he thinks the delivery guy is a hero... How did you get the role? I was asked if I wanted to play Pat, which is exciting. Luckily with it being an animated movie, I didn’t have to look like him. So I didn’t have to put on a fake chin and a ginger mullet and come into the room with a cat. Why do you think Pat is still so popular after all these years? He’s just such a sweet-hearted, lovely guy who’s doing his best to do his job in the best way he can, and obviously he gets thrown a few curveballs every now and again.

But Rydal bites off more than he can chew with the MacFarlands, who are more dangerous than they appear. Drawn into a murder cover-up and falling for Dunst’s vulnerable Colette, Rydal and Chester soon start knocking heads...

Did you find yourself humming the old TV show theme song? It’s impossible not to! It’s got to be one of the catchiest songs ever written by a human being! It features in the film. When did Pat learn to fly a helicopter? There’s no limit to Pat’s talents! He’s keeping up with the modern trends! He can fly a helicopter, he can ride a motorbike, drive a van, you name it, Pat can do it. Pat is a hero. Can he use email, though? He has mixed feelings about email. He’s not recovered from the fax machine coming in!

What curveballs get thrown at him in this film? He gets seduced by the glittery allure of showbiz, enters a talent competition run by a man called Simon Cowbell and it turns out that Pat has a rather wonderful singing voice! But getting far in that competition brings problems.

Sporting the best cheekbones you’ll see in any movie released this year – and possibly for the next ten years, if we’re honest – Angelina Jolie has a ball as the wicked Queen Maleficent in this Disney adventure. The story of Sleeping Beauty is familiar to anyone who’s ever read the original fairy tale or seen the iconic 1959 cartoon, but here’s a dark twist on the formula: this time it takes place from the point of view of the Queen, rather than the innocent Princess Aurora, who famously pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and falls

Arnie is ready to root out a thief in Sabotage!

Q&A

Arnold Schwarzenegger The Sabotage star talks SWAT teams, revenge and playing much-loved roles… Tell us about Sabotage... We’re a DEA elite task force and we fight a drug cartel. And then it’s payback time. It’s a battle between good and evil – revenge. Did you do any special training? We trained with the Los Angeles SWAT team so that we could know how to handle our weapons – not that I didn’t have a lot of weapons in my life! Tell us about your character, Wharton, the team leader... His mission is to go and infiltrate the cartel and wipe out the drugs, but he starts looking for revenge because they’ve tortured and killed his family. So he becomes a flawed hero. He’s a layered character: was that a deliberate choice? When you’re a certain age, especially coming out of a government job, you see the world as more complex. Therefore you start getting attracted to characters that are written more complex and multi-dimensional. Who was the toughest out of your crack team of co-stars? It’s very hard to say, as they were all tough guys! They all went through martial arts training, they were pounded away on and kicked. They were thrown around and did as many stunts as possible. Sam Worthington trained like a madman for this! What is next for you? My next movie is Terminator – I did not plan that! They came to me and I felt very honoured that they got me back. I love that character, playing a machine. Then Universal asked me to play Conan so I thought, “This is great, I’m back to all the original characters that made my career!”
