For the sequel, the duo’s headquarters have been changed – moving across the

street to, er, 22 Jump Street – but they’re still working undercover, this time in a college. Mutants young and old fight for the survival of the world in X-Men: Days Of Future Past…

s you all no doubt know, Patrick Stewart plays the older version of Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. James McAvoy, meanwhile, plays Charles’s younger self in prequel X-Men: First Class. In the latest film, thanks to the paradoxical powers of time-travel, the two actors finally get to share a moment on screen – as the same character, separated by decades. “It’s weird, because when I took over the role of Charles, I never thought that I’d be working with him,” explains McAvoy of filming alongside Stewart. “I never thought I’d give a similar 12 odeon.co.uk

performance to him. I certainly never thought that I’d be giving a very different performance to him to his face. Kind of going like, ‘Yo, what you got, man? Show me your big nose! We’ve got big noses together!’” He laughs. “There’s a profile shot with both our noses together. Conk to conk.” We get the pleasure of seeing both of these noses in one place in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, adapted from one of the Marvel mutants’ most famous adventures: Chris Claremont’s 1980 comic-book run of the same name. first few films in the franchise – including Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Halle Berry’s Storm and Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde – are battling a terrifying enemy. The rest takes place in the past, to which the ageless Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has travelled so that he can prevent the disasters of the future from happening. This entails trying to stop the unleashing of giant robots called Sentinels, who are trying to eradicate mutants from the world. The last time we saw Charles, he’d been betrayed by friend Erik (Michael Fassbender) and almost-sister Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), not to mention finding himself paralysed after the explosive events at the end of X-Men: First Class. “You’ll find him very different,” explains McAvoy of this sequel, which takes place in the ’70s, the decade after First Class. “Not just because he’s got long

hair, but because of what he is and how shaky his soul is… He’s lost the ability to be able to empathise with other people, because it’s too painful for him. Why? Because he’s been given all of his own pain to deal with. “It’s a movie about all of us, about all the guys in the X-Men,” McAvoy continues, “but I suppose the person with the biggest journey is arguably

And not just me battling (the Sentinels), but all the characters. It’s exciting after doing two Wolverine movies in a row to see how the X-Men work together.” He’s also full of praise for director Bryan Singer’s vision. “It’s important to him to create Magneto and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) have a bust-up.

the most incredible time-travel movie of all time,” he says. “It’s a very epic, big, big movie.” SENTINEL THREAT Singer himself, meanwhile, is excited about the Sentinels. “There are movies like Transformers, Iron Man and Pacific Rim that have already explored robots of all different sizes, shapes, scope and calibre. I knew that to make another ‘robot attacks people’ movie is (not original), yet they are an element in the picture. So they serve the story: not necessarily in an obvious, ‘rock-em-sockem’ battle at the end of the movie, although there is that.” The creator of these robots is Bolivar Trask, played by Peter Dinklage, a superstar these days thanks to his role as Tyrion Lannister in one of the world’s most acclaimed TV shows. “I’m a big fan of Game Of Thrones, so I’m a fan of his,” Singer explains about his

casting choice. “But I also like the idea of not a very big guy building very big robots, something ironically interesting about that.” Veteran producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who’s been involved in the X-Men films since they began in 2000, is confident that Days Of Future Past will be a success. “My mandate to myself since I’ve been involved in these movies was ‘make every single movie different, so there’s never X-Men fatigue’,” she says. “What I loved about what Matthew Vaughn did (in First Class) was that he made it a Bond movie. And James Mangold, with The Wolverine, made a noir. And Bryan… what he’s doing is bringing back the classic X-Men that we had before, the classic cast.” She nods. “It’s the right way to do it.” X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens on 22 May.

Bryan Singer, director: “You can’t just whip up that formula and go, ‘Uh, here is my Gambit movie and my Deadpool movie, this movie and that movie, and they’re all gonna be hits!’ You’ve got to take care with each one.” James McAvoy: “X-Men will always be around. There’s an endearing and an enduring quality to the material that I don’t think we could possibly screw up so much that it disappears.”

The voice of Postman Pat tells ODEON why he thinks the delivery guy is a hero... How did you get the role? I was asked if I wanted to play Pat, which is exciting. Luckily with it being an animated movie, I didn’t have to look like him. So I didn’t have to put on a fake chin and a ginger mullet and come into the room with a cat. Why do you think Pat is still so popular after all these years? He’s just such a sweet-hearted, lovely guy who’s doing his best to do his job in the best way he can, and obviously he gets thrown a few curveballs every now and again.

Arnold Schwarzenegger The Sabotage star talks SWAT teams, revenge and playing much-loved roles… Tell us about Sabotage... We’re a DEA elite task force and we fight a drug cartel. And then it’s payback time. It’s a battle between good and evil – revenge. Did you do any special training? We trained with the Los Angeles SWAT team so that we could know how to handle our weapons – not that I didn’t have a lot of weapons in my life! Tell us about your character, Wharton, the team leader... His mission is to go and infiltrate the cartel and wipe out the drugs, but he starts looking for revenge because they’ve tortured and killed his family. So he becomes a flawed hero. He’s a layered character: was that a deliberate choice? When you’re a certain age, especially coming out of a government job, you see the world as more complex. Therefore you start getting attracted to characters that are written more complex and multi-dimensional. Who was the toughest out of your crack team of co-stars? It’s very hard to say, as they were all tough guys! They all went through martial arts training, they were pounded away on and kicked. They were thrown around and did as many stunts as possible. Sam Worthington trained like a madman for this! What is next for you? My next movie is Terminator – I did not plan that! They came to me and I felt very honoured that they got me back. I love that character, playing a machine. Then Universal asked me to play Conan so I thought, “This is great, I’m back to all the original characters that made my career!”
