For the last 25 years we’ve been providing opportunities, creating pathways and changing lives from our home in the heart of east London. Over the following pages we share our history, our future vision for the Foundation, and set out how we will make a difference to individuals and communities all over the world.

AND VOLUNTEERS
WEST HAM UNITED FOUNDATION
WELCOME When my two Chairmen, David Sullivan and David Gold, and I began our work at West Ham United nearly six years ago, one of our first priorities was to maintain and build on the excellent work the Club had been doing to create better futures for local people.
future, as West Ham United prepare to take up residence in our new home.
community projects in our borough of Newham, supporting some 15,000 residents directly each year.
One of the things that really hit home when we were announced as anchor tenants at the Stadium back in 2013 was what this meant in terms of our ability to expand our community delivery.
My Chairmen both originated from the area and often used to tell me of the pull of the East End and its people, something you can only appreciate when you have lived or worked in the area. With their passion for giving something back to their local community and my determination to use sport to better the lives of its people, it quickly became something that was incredibly important to all three of us.
We partner with local academies to deliver sports, youth engagement and wider holistic programmes, while the Active People Active Park partnership on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has already culminated in 1389 hours of athletics delivered for 4,526 participants to date.
Nobody is better placed to deliver the legacy for London than West Ham United — after all we have been delivering legacies for London since our formation as Thames Ironworks FC back in 1895.
Our award-winning Foundation had been delivering services in east London and Essex since the early 1990s — specifically targeting some of the most deprived boroughs in the country. But we knew it could do more and our move to the former Olympic Stadium would enable us to expand on the established links and award-winning programmes already in place at an exponential rate. I appointed a new Head of Community, Joe Lyons, in June 2013 and together we made sure the Foundation became the hub to deliver the Clubs vision for outreach, benefitting the charities we feel most passionate about and most importantly giving brighter futures for the most deprived people in our community. Together we made sure it was truly the CSR arm of the Club. We now have some remarkable stories to tell of the lives we’ve changed and an exciting, ambitious vision for the
Our move to Stratford will provide over a million visitors to the Park each year and an opportunity to help tens of thousands of disadvantaged youngsters. Though the move is still some months away, the Foundation is reaching out to more and more people with every passing day, delivering the sporting legacy and social mobility that was so deeply entrenched in London’s spectacular 2012 Games promise. In its 25 years, the Foundation has provided some 1.5 million opportunities and now, as we outline the Foundation’s new ten year plan, the future looks brighter still. I’m proud to report that our Foundation is a top performer across the Premier League’s community schemes. Over the past three seasons, provision of support by the Foundation has increased by 300 per cent. Working with our partners during the last financial year we have invested over £1.3 million in our local communities and almost £600,000 is to be spent each year on West Ham
In addition to what we bring to Stratford I have insisted that the vital work we carry out in and around our current home in East Ham not only continues but continues to grow. Our plans will also deliver the much needed regeneration of Upton Park, in line with the needs of its existing community. So two areas of east London will see a huge benefit from our move, rather than just one. Our new ten-year plan further consolidates our commitment to our community and delivering a sporting legacy for the 2012 Games and we expect these numbers to grow as we enter into the most memorable journey our Club has ever undertaken. And the most exciting part of all of this? This is just the start as there is so much more we can and will achieve over the coming years.
Thank you for your support

WEST HAM UNITED FOUNDATION
A CAST IRON HERITAGE 25 years in the making
In 1990 West Ham United established its community department and ever since we have been bringing the Club’s values to life across east London and Essex. From the Boleyn Ground the Club could see the issues affecting the communities surrounding the famous ground. Now as the West Ham United Foundation we continue that work and look at how football, and sport in general, can be a force for social good. Through engaging and innovative programmes we make sport accessible and enjoyable, bringing people together through shared experiences.

WEST HAM UNITED FOUNDATION
Sport offers a unique way of providing life-changing experiences – with clear benefits including health, personal development, educational attainment, and social inclusion. We see football and sport as a way of offering inclusive experiences irrespective of age, ability, gender or belief. The West Ham United way is to never give up, to develop home-grown talent and to be good people not just good players. We help these beliefs become a reality, not only by encouraging the next generation of Academy and First Team players, but by building a dynamic relationship between West Ham United and its many communities.

CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF COMMUNITY SPORT.
We strengthen communities by delivering accessible sport and physical activity, enhancing health and well-being; we tackle exclusion and create pathways into education and work. We create experiences that encourage more people to take part in sport and physical activity. No matter who contacts us, irrespective of their age, background or ability we offer the support, advice and guidance they need to make a difference to their lives. Whether it’s playing competitive or community sport, gaining the confidence to do better academically or professionally, or finding the pathway to a better future, we want people to know that West Ham United is there for them. Our support is available as long as it is needed; our Foundation pathway offers a seamless journey including short, long-term and transitional programmes designed to meet the needs of the individual. We are constantly striving to improve and provide better outcomes for the communities around us. Over the next 10 years we will build on our existing strengths and develop new and exciting inclusive projects in east London, Essex and across the UK, while looking to extend our reach across locations worldwide. Our move to the new Stadium is a fantastic opportunity for the Foundation’s development. We will continue the sporting legacy started by the 2012 Games, building the bonds between football, other sports and the community sector; ensuring that we are now recognised for the essential role we play across our communities and are at the forefront of tackling the inequalities we face in our society today.

Our new Community Sport foundation degree is the next step in our commitment to creating better futures. We offer a seamless pathway for learners from school to further education, and now, on into higher education before they take their final step into employment.
Completing Leadership Through Sport and Business prepared Iqra for a career in the finance sector. The programme combined working towards a finance qualification with volunteering as a community sports leadership mentor.

Our Walking Football programme offers older people a way to keep playing. From 5 locations across Newham, Tower Hamlets and Essex we welcome between 15 and 20 people to each session – a number which will undoubtedly continue to grow in 2016!
Our Women & Girls system is designed to show how players can progress through the age ranges to representing our Ladies team. Mentoring between the age groups lets younger players understand how to handle issues they face in football and in life.
Don joined Sporting Stories in 2015, 51 years after first watching West Ham and shared many tales from the terraces. As a trained volunteer he keeps the group connected, fending off any feelings of loneliness the group may have.

We took our Premier League Kicks model a step further in Chobham Academy, Stratford, by using music to engage disruptive and easily distracted children. Combining football and music made both more accessible, resulting in improved concentration and educational performance.
Many of the people we work with stay with us, either joining other programmes, or working towards coaching qualifications or completing leadership training. This year 12 of our best talents travelled to Peru to retrace the steps of Victorian shipbuilders from east London to Lake Titicaca.
Shakeel’s leadership skills were spotted at one of our Kicks session. Now working for the Foundation he’s using his enthusiasm and commitment to change people’s attitudes towards disability through our Give us a Beak sporting inclusivity programme.

A FINAL THOUGHT…
The famous crossed hammers represent the formation of West Ham United.
Values grounded in our history
In 1895 Thames Ironworks FC was founded, becoming West Ham United in 1900. As one of the largest employers in east London the Club originally recruited its players from within the workforce.
The Thames Iron Works was the most important shipwright on the Thames, building some of the biggest and most famous vessels of the era.
Some 120 years later the east London landscape may be very different but the role of the Club, and our Foundation, is still as clear as it was back then.
