Advanced Facebook
In touch with Facebook Use the dedicated Facebook iPad app to stay social while you’re mobile
T
he Facebook iPad app is available for free from the App Store – you can find it by simply typing “Facebook for iPad” in the search bar. It is completely free to download and use and offers you the complete Facebook experience, optimised for the bigger screen and features of the iPad. You can use your fingers to scroll through your News Feed and pinch images to zoom in, or swipe the screen to page through your photo albums, just as you’d expect. Thanks to the extra screen space, looking at photos and videos on the iPad is far superior to just using your mobile phone. Images and movies
are bigger and easier to navigate and make you feel as if you’re running your own slideshow, thanks to the simple gestures you can use to move through them and zoom in or out. The app has improved more than just fingertip navigation on the iPad, however. You’ll find it a lot faster than the original mobile app, and there are many more options within the app – you now have more games and applications to choose from when accessing Facebook. Over the next couple of pages we’ll show you all the ins and outs of this über popular social networking app and help you get the most out of its various features.

or comment on that status. A window will appear on the right where you can enter text using the keyboard or just tap the Like button.

Tap here to open a menu where you can find settings, friends, events, applications and other features common to Facebook.

The News Feed takes up a good portion of the screen space for easier reading, navigation and commenting, and it’s far easier to zoom in on photos, read updates and more.
05 Chat update
The latest messages and live conversations are listed at the top here. You’ll also see what was last said and view people’s online status.
06 Chat list
01 Keep your place
Friend Requests, Messages and Notifications all show a drop-down menu so your current browsing session is not disturbed and you don’t lose your place.

Tap any one of the names down the right-hand side to start a chat. Only those with a green dot are online at this time but others will receive your message via the Messages feature when they next log in.
Facebook Advanced HOW TO Get to know the iPad Facebook app
01 Install and start
Once you’ve downloaded the app you’ll need to enter your Facebook email address and password in order to gain access. The app will ask you if you are prepared to accept Push Notifications. This is how it will let you know of updates on Facebook, so tap OK.
04 Account management
Tap the menu icon (top left) and scroll to Settings. Tap this, then Account Settings in the pop-up. You can’t edit your settings as extensively as in a browser but you can make minor changes to your name, email, networks and privacy settings – the latter are important.
02 First impressions
You’ll now arrive at the main News Feed page, looking very similar to the mobile app, with Sort in the top right, triple parallel bars for the menu, and Invites, Messages and Notifications left. These all work as usual, and will be highlighted if there is an update.
05 Privacy
Tap on the Privacy tab under Account Settings. Under Control Privacy When You Post, you can set who views your updates and photos posted via your Facebook app. By default this is set to Friends but you can change it to Public or tap Custom to fine-tune.
03 A landscape look
Holding your iPad in landscape mode offers far more screen to work with. Your chat list will appear on the right and the News Feed in the middle. The mini News Feed that runs along the right in the browser version is not included, but it doesn’t make much difference.
06 Tag management
You can also adjust tags by tapping the appropriate Edit Settings link. “Tag review” ensures people cannot tag you without your permission; “Tag suggestions” can be switched off if you don’t want Facebook to suggest you to your friends when they upload images.
QUICK TIP Tap an image in someone’s update to bring it full screen. Zoom in using your fingers to get a closer view, then pinch them together to drop back from full screen image to the News Feed. Quick and simple.
07 App settings
Under Privacy, scroll down to Apps and websites and click on Edit app settings. The first line takes you to your list of apps – to remove one, tap on the app and Remove application. This process is even easier to manage in the app than on the browser.
08 Personal Privacy
Some people don’t want the world to know they’re playing Patience. Each individual app can have its settings tweaked to turn off posting on your behalf, adjust its privacy and much more. Just change its settings to suit, then tap the arrow to go back when done.
