CES 2024: The Most Powerful Tech Event Delivers Each year, CES attendees walk our venue halls looking for the next great technology innovations. Business leaders search for their next acquisition or partnership, analysts scout for year-defining trends, and media highlight the show’s breakout stars. That means everyone is on the hunt for the bold, new and exciting. CES 2024 delivers in spades, with double-digit growth across the show floor and in top sectors like AI, digital health, robotics, food and agriculture tech, smart home, and more. Perhaps no area of CES has expanded as rapidly as automotive and mobility – growing by 15 percent since last January and an astonishing 60 percent since CES 2020. In fact, we believe CES 2024 will be the world’s largest automotive and mobility tech show. You’ll see 250+ automotive companies filling an at-capacity West Hall and spilling into North Hall and outdoors to the LVCC Diamond Lot, with several hundred more across the show floor. Together, they’ll tell the full mobility story – from robotaxis and ridesharing, to sensors and software, to electric vehicles, bikes, and scooters. Expect OEMs like BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedez-Benz, alongside innovations in construction and agriculture tech from HD Hyundia, John Deere, and Kubota. Plus, the latest and greatest in both EVs and self-driving – including flying car prototypes from Supernal and XPENG – powered by software and chips from industry leaders like Garmin, Mobileye, and Qualcomm. Automotive will also drive our conversations at CES, with more than 25 conference sessions, including a keynote with HD Hyundai CEO Kisun Chung tomorrow.

Gary Shapiro President and CEO Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®

To see another exciting and fast-growing area of the show, head over to Tech East and our digital health exhibits. CES 2024 will forecast a future of healthcare that’s more personalized, accessible, and intelligent, featuring the latest wearables and remote patient monitoring, alongside AI-driven tools to support early disease detection and customized treatment. Many of these health tools also feature accessibility-focused innovations designed to help bridge gaps in healthcare access. Look for a 3-D medication printer from Doser and a range of ‘hearable’ technology from EssilorLuxottica and other brands designed to mix function with fashion. Food tech is also ‘growing’ at CES – as we show off innovations from farm to table with breakthroughs in agriculture, alternative food science, and waste reduction. Check out Yo-Kai Express, showing their “autonomous restaurant in a box,” and Sevvy’s new energy-reducing and nutrient-boosting cooking technology. Gaming is on the rise with big names like Bandai Namco showing off their latest technology, alongside peripheral makers like XReal and HaptX creating more immersive worlds. And of course, you won’t get the full CES experience without a visit to Central Hall, home to hundreds of iconic tech brands like Bosch, Canon, Hisense, LG, Nikon, Samsung, SK, Sony, and TCL and the best of audio, video, and entertainment. Wherever you’re set to explore – don’t forget to check out the CES 2024 app, sponsored by Walmart! You can find interactive venue maps, recommendations for upcoming conference sessions, and even network with other CES attendees.

duces less waste as the leftover hair coloring can be used at a later time. Committed to preserving natural beauty and resources, L’Oréal has reinvented the hair washing and rinsing experience with the Water Saver, a showerhead that divides the flow of water to create 10 times smaller droplets, accelerating them for faster and more effective rinsing. Water Saver cuts water use by 60 percent compared to standard rinsing and only uses 2.4 liters of water per minute compared to the 7 liters consumed by a standard showerhead. “For over a decade, L’Oréal research and innovation has been creating a new beauty science powered by technology — augmented beauty — which is technology that truly answers age-old consumer needs with unparalleled results,” said Lavernos as she unveiled the AirLight Pro, a next-generation hair drying tool. The AirLight Pro was designed with professional stylists for both beauty professionals and consumers at home and is equipped with a special 17-blade, high-speed motor and patented infrared technology powered by tungsten-halogen bulbs designed for fast hair drying without excessive heat. By efficiently drying water on the hair surface, hair is left with internal moisture in the strand, resulting in smooth, shiny hair. Rounding up the announcements was the HAPTA, a handheld makeup applicator designed specifically for users with limited arm and hand mobility. This device marks a significant advancement in beauty tech, ensuring makeup is more accessible for all.

CTA Celebrates 100 Years of Igniting Innovation BY GRANT MORGAN Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), took to the stage yesterday morning to officially open CES 2024 and welcome attendees from over 150 nations around the world. “Technology enables us to do more with less and delivers creative solutions that transform our world,” said Shapiro in his opening keynote. “We all know we’re in a time of growing challenges and growing divides, so it’s no overstatement to say technology is vital to the survival and flourishing of humankind.” CTA is celebrating its 100th anniversary during CES 2024, and there are interactive anniversary events taking place at the CTA Center in the LVCC Grand Lobby, a CTA historical timeline in the West Hall connector, and signs and historical photo ops placed throughout the show. The CTA, which began as the Radio Manufac turer’s Association in 1924, has continued the work started by its founders. “[CTA has] evolved as technology has evolved. We’ve gone from hardware to software, to understanding that every company can be, and perhaps should be, a tech company. We’re urging policymakers in Washington and around the globe to adopt rules and laws that protect consumers, but also promote innovation and growth,” said Shapiro. “That means developing lighter-touch rules that support the businesses, the big ones, but also allow the small ones to enter so there can be innovation in areas like AI, digital health, mobility, sustainability, and more.” Kinsey Fabrizio, senior vice president of CES and membership at the Consumer Technology Association, also welcomed attendees and gave an outline of what attendees could expect at CES, as well as high-

lighting some of her favorite innovation topics — digital health and sustainability, which are two of the 41 technology categories covered at CES 2024. “As we develop better, more personalized treatment, we need to make sure that no one is left behind,” said Fabrizio. “That’s why at CES 2024 you’ll see telehealth and more that are making healthcare more accessible and inclusive.” CTA’s efforts aren’t limited to the United States, and in 2023 Shapiro announced the addition of technology as the eighth pillar in the year-old Human Security for All (HS4A) campaign during the G eneral Assembly meeting of the United Nations. Existing

HS4A security pillars are economic, environmental, food, health, political, personal, and community security. “Technology is part of who we are,” added Shapiro, “but we’ve also come to understand that technology can and must play an even more powerful role in society. “We’re looking forward to the next 100 years, the next innovations that will amaze, astonish, and inspire us, and the next generation of entrepreneurs who will dream up and build the world-changing technologies that will make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Kia Redefines Space and Mobility at CES 2024 BY WAYNE CAVADI With a focus on movement and mobility for all, Kia has come to CES set to change not only the way we move, but the way we live. The renowned auto company is “All Set for Every Inspiration,” as it sets out to redefine space and mobility. Among its line of electric vehicles that will be showcased at CES 2024 — including the EV9, which was just named the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year — Kia is rolling out its Platform Beyond Vehicle line of EVs. The PBV line aspires to build a better future with a new concept of space. Whether a rider is stationary or on the move, the PBV series gives people, as Karim Habib head of Kia global design put it, “a blank canvas to reimaging their lifestyles.” To a roomful of oohs and aahs, Kia unveiled for the first time its Concept PV5. As with all EVs, sustainability is at the heart of the PBV series, showing that Kia can both innovate and protect the environment hand in hand. Part of the PBV series, the PV5 opens the door for new businesses and lifestyles by enabling more efficient, reliable, and meaningful in-vehicle experiences. The three-phased design approach cumulated in a line of vehicles in which every feature is simple, easy, and intuitive to use. Kia PBVs will come in a wide range of body types to address a wide array of needs and use cases, starting with the PV5. There will be pickup options, high-roof options, and the PV5-R, or what Kia is calling its robo-taxi. This robo-taxi concept is being celebrated at CES with the announcement of an all-new partnership with Uber. Every PBV is unique in purpose, providing high-level practicality ideal for small businesses. For example, a

driver can stand upright and work in the cargo area or transform the back into an office on wheels, built-in desk and all. The sliding two-way flip seats are flexible and configurable, while riders can enjoy a living-space cockpit with a steering wheel that transforms into what appears to be a desktop. Large doors allow for physically disabled riders to get in. There are seemingly endless possibilities. Furthermore, modularity of frames and cabinets allows connectivity between the different vehicles in the PBV series and can even arrange transfer from a PV7 to a PV1 autonomously for more convenience and efficiency. A clever tile and rail system helps adapt vehicle to personal needs. The PBV experience ultimately extends beyond the physical presence of the vehicle and can change from a home office to a camper or to any layout for any lifestyle from moving and delivery to ride sharing domains. Businesses and users can seamlessly manage multiple PBVs with Kia’s Fleet Management System, allowing people to keep track of sales, inventory, and deliveries while also monitoring inventory in cabins and even monitor the temperature. Kia recently opened a PBV-dedicated EVO plant in Korea where it focuses on automated production of the “Dynamic Hybrid” model, allowing for horizontal and vertical expansion. The PV5 was developed around the operating system, as software capabilities were at the forefront of the design. In-vehicle, AI-generated infotainment makes daily life as smooth as possible by recognizing the user and purpose in real time, automatically uploading what the user needs, when they need it. Kia invites attendees for a glimpse of what a sustainable future focused on mobility for all will look like through the PBV series.

Hydrogen-Powered Hyundai Brings Ecosystem BY WAYNE CAVADI “Innovation is in our DNA,” said Jose Munoz, president and global chief operating officer Hyundai, kicking off the company’s week-long showcase at CES. It is through meaningful innovation — focused around hydrogen, AI, and a new-found software-centric approach — that Hyundai fosters new advances in mobility with the theme of “ease every way” at CES 2024. At CES, Hyundai will highlight demonstrative technologies to its future mobility concepts and showcase how it will create a human-centered future society by shifting to a hydrogen-energy ecosystem and focusing on software and AI. “We believe there is no progress unless we serve humanity,” continued Munoz, explaining Hyundai’s message. “We measure real progress with real impact. We don’t just pursue innovation for innovation’s sake; we do it for the people — for mobility free of limitation that is safe and accessible.” For 2024 and beyond, Hyundai — a pioneer in hydrogen-powered, fuel-celled EVs since the 2013 launch of NEXO — is focused on human-centric innovations from its modular hydrogen toolbox to effectively establish a clean hydrogen value chain. Hydrogen-powered

transformation in mobility is a winwin solution — organic waste and plastics can be transformed into hydrogen, creating viable solutions for the Hyundai hydrogen value chain. Hyundai announced an all-new NEXO can be expected to launch in 2025. Hydrogen’s high accessibility makes it fair to everyone and it is capable of powering everything. It unlocks all possibilities and allows Hyundai to take something complex and make it Jose Munoz tangible for everyone. It quite literally provides ease in every way to everyone. Hyundai also shared its software-driven transformation. This new strategy, showcased here at CES 2024, will change hardware-based vehicles to smart connected mobility experiences. This includes autonomous vehicles and AI-assistive technology paired with Amazon Web Services, Hyundai’s preferred cloud provider. Alexa will be in vehicles in 2025 and Hyundai vehicles hope to bring the convenience of “home on the road.” The software transformation worked backwards

— addressing customers’ needs first and seeing how to enhance the software from there. Hyundai recognizes mobility is tied to wide range of purpose and needs, not simply to the vehicle, but the cities, roads, and governments that work alongside Hyundai’s vehicles. There are challenges of maintaining and owning transportation, as well as complex transportation challenges that governments face in maintaining cities. Hyundai’s focus at CES is the evolving mobility needs and continually addressing those challenges. With its software-defined strategy, Hyundai looks to provide the same experience with cars as smartphones. Afterall, users have the same expectations: constant updates and intuitive experiences in real-time. Hyundai in-house software, which is being shown at CES, looks to improves the user experience with a new infotainment system and apps and integrating human interactions with its AI software to reduce errors and vulnerabilities while enhancing the safety of vehicles.

AI Pioneers Insist That It Is ‘Here to Stay’ BY STEWART WOLPIN People’s opinions of AI vary widely from the possibility of creating a utopian machine-assisted world or precipitate a dystopic machine-dominated future á la SkyNet from the Terminator movie series, with millions of possibilities and potential in between. But two AI pioneers made one thing clear at the “Great Minds, Bold Visions: What’s Next for AI” conference session moderated by R ajeev Chand, partner and head of research at Wing Venture Capital: AI is here to stay and will only become what humans make of it. “AI is a general-purpose technology, meaning that it’s not useful for one thing. It’s kind of like electricity, another general-purpose technology,” explained Andrew Ng, AI Fund managing general partner, the founder of DeepLearning.AI, co-founder and chairman of Coursera, an adjunct professor at Stanford University, and was the founding lead of the Google Brain team. “If I ask you what electricity is for, it’s useful for so many different things. AI is like that, too. There are so many use cases all around the world to be identified and built out.” AI is “a deep-end horizontal technology,” agreed fel-

low Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li, co-director of Stanford Institute’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, co-founder of AI4ALL, and often referred to as the godmother of AI. “It is becoming a true transformative driving force of the next digital revolution or industrial revolution. In terms of public media coverage, it’s going to just go in waves, and that’s not very relevant. What is relevant is that this technology is here to stay, is here to be deep end into all vertical businesses and consumer experiences, and is changing the very fabric of our societal, economical, and political landscape. And that is just a fact.”

Both Li and Ng recognized and tried to allay the many fears AI engenders, especially the potential for AI to steal jobs from humans, especially creators. “We have to be careful about [talking about] replacing jobs versus replacing tasks,” Li insisted. “Every given human job is actually a suite of multiple tasks. A nurse works an eight-hour shift, but that actually comprises hundreds of tasks. So, I do see that AI agents help them, being assistive and augmentative on many tasks. You can actually discern repeatable patterns out of the data, and that’s where you can start. Where the patterns of data prove to be valuable and actionable in your business is where one should be looking.” “It turns out that there’s a recipe for businesses to figure out what tasks you should try to use AI to augment,” Ng advised. “Jobs are made out of tasks, and even artists’ jobs are made of many tasks. AI may automate 20-30 percent of someone’s tasks, but that’s still a lot of other tasks that we need people to do and maybe they could be more efficient and actually even make more money. But there is this fear that I think is challenging.”

CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024 | 15

Panasonic Continues Its Green Initiatives BY JOHN SCIACCA Panasonic’s 2024 CES press event focused less on products and more on what the company is doing to create a more sustainable future with the theme, “Create Today. Enrich Tomorrow.” Panasonic has been making products to make peoples’ lives better for more than a century, but realizes that the production and use of these products has contributed to the global climate crisis. And even though the company is a sustainable practice leader, they realize they need to do more, and to that end they are focused on creating green energy solutions for homes, businesses, and driving electrification in the mobility industry. According to Dr. Hirotoshi Uehara Panasonic’s executive officer in charge of quality and environment, “The world is at an inflection point. The science is clear; we must accelerate our efforts toward a meaningful change in our use of energy,” and it is Panasonic’s responsibility to make peoples’ lives better while reducing their carbon footprint. Panasonic’s Green Impact Initiative represents its commitment to a greener, more equitable future for everyone, and the company is exploring a variety of ways to do this. One is through Panasonic’s alternative plastic manufacturing technology called kinari, which is made from up to 85 percent of cellulose fiber from materials like cedar, coffee grinds, and even beer byproducts. The company has a goal of developing this into a material that is 100 percent recyclable and biodegradable, and kinari is one of the materials used to create the company’s CES booth. Panasonic is also pioneering biofarming techniques that use CO2 to help farming crops and offset carbon usage, as well as the company’s DERMS (Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems) technology that is used to optimize EV vehicle charging and discharging, as well as provide cyber security monitoring to protect the power grid. So far, 31 of Panasonic’s factories and sites are carbon neutral (including all 14 of the company’s automotive sites) and 37 million tons of emissions have been avoided. The ultimate goal is for carbon neutrality everywhere, and Panasonic is working toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Todd Lancaster, executive VP of Panasonic Automotive Systems, said that vehicles are becoming more software reliant, and that smart vehicles will need to sense, process, share, and drive insights for next-generation vehicles. Panasonic has launched a high-performance computing platform called Neuron that will maximize performance, safety, and communication, and be the beginning of the next total vehicle evolution. Panasonic announced partnerships with electric ve-

Dr. Hirotoshi Uehara

hicle manufacturer, Fisker, as well as Infiniti, having worked closely with these companies to deliver new high-performance audio systems that will use significantly less space and energy to maximize vehicle performance while still delivering stunning audio reproduction. Panasonic president and CEO, Akira Toyoshima, offered that Panasonic sees “TV as more than just a device; it is at the heart of every home.” TVs are also the gateways to new worlds and exploration, and can also transform a space, connect us to loved ones, keep us informed of the news, and inspire, educate, and entertain. Beyond just producing the most accurate picture

quality, the huge volume of options available for viewing in the streaming world has created a paradox of choice, and pinpointing what to watch has become a problem for many. Panasonic’s new mission for TV goes beyond just delivering great picture quality, but helping discover what you want to watch with the motto, “Explore more, and feel more.” To that end, from 2024 onward all Panasonic TVs will feature Amazon Fire TV built-in as part of a collaboration with Amazon, combining best-in-class hardware and software for an innovative viewing experience. Content and app discovery will be at the center of the viewing experience with deep integration with Alexa voice control, making it easier to find what to watch. For 2024, Panasonic is launching two new OLED models, the Z93A and Z95A. The flagship Master OLED Ultimate 95A is brighter than ever before, utilizes new HCX Pro AI MkII video processing, features native 144 Hz refresh rates (one of the world’s first OLED displays to do so), and will integrate seamlessly with Alexa devices right out of box. In its personal healthcare line, Panasonic introduced the new Palm Shaver, a new shaving device. In line with its sustainability practices, this is built from Nagori, a material derived from sea minerals, and reduces plastic usage by 40 percent. There are also new grooming attachments (skin care brushes, foot care, trimmers) for the Multishape grooming device introduced last year, which the company calls “the last grooming device you’ll ever need.”

MCINTOSH GROUP, WYNN HOSPITALITY SUITES Head over to the McIntosh Sound Villa located at the Wynn to experience the brand-new McIntosh MC2.1KW monoblock power amplifier, the company’s most powerful amplifier to date, and the stunning Sonus faber Suprema speakers, which include four columns — two mains and two subwoofers.

Siemen’s Busch Describes ‘Industrial Metaverse’ to Speed Tech Innovation BY STEWART WOLPIN Creating advanced consumer technologies is a painstaking process that requires significant infrastructure, time, and especially money. Or at least it used to. In his opening CES 2024 keynote, Siemens’ president and CEO Dr. Roland Busch laid out the concept of an industrial metaverse that he believes will “redefine reality and transform the way we live, work, move, or make” — and maybe already has. As part of the industrial metaverse, Busch described new partnerships with Sony to co-create a head-mounted virtual 3D display to help mechanical engineers design and manipulate products in a virtual world; with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to make the capabilities of generative AI capabilities more accessible; with Red Bull to design more advanced F1 race cars, and with Unlimited Tomorrow to speed the development of prosthetic arms. “We can build and use technology faster than ever because we can combine the real and the digital worlds,” Busch insisted. According to Busch, the industrial metaverse “accelerates innovation because you can simulate whatever you want to build in the digital world before you build it in the real world. In the industrial metaverse, time flows differently. Iterations that once took years can be done now in seconds. It accelerates sustainability because wherever you build you can understand and quantify the

Dr. Roland Busch

environmental impact that allows you to build products using less resources and to build products that can be recycled. It accelerates access to new tech because everyone can now contribute to ideation, design, and production.” Busch described the three Siemens-designed building blocks of the industrial metaverse. The first building block is the digital twin, which enables the building, testing, and perfecting of complex structures of any kind — factories, power grids, planes, trains, and automobiles — even “the beating human heart” — in the virtual world before building the real thing. Second is software-defined automation; smarter factory control systems to more quickly and efficiently manufacturer products. The third industrial metaverse building block is data and AI, which “allows you to access all the knowledge in your company so you can better engineer the solutions you need. Generative AI large language models let you talk to your machines in natural language as if they were human,” according to Busch.

One example of data and AI is the Siemens Industrial Co-Pilot, co-developed with Microsoft, that “acts as your programmer and revolutionizes the way you operate your machines, to accelerate the pace of software development across industries,” Busch explained. AWS will now incorporate Siemens’ Mendix, a natural language, drag-and-drop AI programming language designed to democratize industrial AI, even for those with no coding experience. “With Mendix, you can just connect to multiple Amazon Web Services machine learning models, drop them inside your application, and start reinventing the customer experience, reinventing your products, and reinventing your process,” described AWS AI VP Matt Woods. Using digital twin, software-defined automation, and data and AI, Busch also described Siemens’ creation of micro factories that can fit inside a 40-foot container and shipped anywhere in the world to help build local economies.

Fighting Against Cybercrime “You can barely keep up with the exponential growth of [online crime],” Robert Downey Jr. said, taking the Marketing Reinvented stage at CES 2024. Downey Jr. has partnered with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Hari Ravichandran on Aura, an online safety service. With a focus on family security and finance, the three spoke of their shared passion to not only educate about online crime, but also use AI as a valuable tool to protect from it. HEADPHONES A Closer Look at Home Audio and Headphones RASIKA D’SOUZA, PRINCIPAL ANALYST & GUY HAMMETT, SENIOR MARKET ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING Consumer audio is feeling the impact of longer replacement cycles and a slowdown in technology innovation. Within home audio, certain categories like soundbars are proving a victim of their own success, with the market now contracting after a COVID-induced boom. For headphones, the picture is similar: having enjoyed a wave of innovation over the last five years, consumers now have less incentive to upgrade. Yet there is optimism on the horizon across numerous categories, as new technologies emerge and consumers reach the end of their replacement cycles.

GENERATIVE-AI TO REVITALIZE SMART SPEAKERS? The wireless speaker market is set for another tough year in 2024. On the Wi-Fi speaker side, tech giants are questioning whether the billions of dollars and years invested in voice assistants and subsidized smart speakers have been worthwhile. Although some are hopeful that a new generation of generative AI-powered smart speakers could rekindle market interest, the current malaise is likely to continue into 2024.

AUDIO QUALITY PROVES AN EVERGREEN FEATURE Despite the poor outlook across the overall Wi-Fi speaker market, there is optimism for Wi-Fi speakers focused on audio quality. Sonos remains the market leader in this space and continues to perform well relative to the overall market. Moreover, JBL, which is leading the Bluetooth speaker market, is renewing its efforts to penetrate the space. As JBL has done in party speakers, where it single-hand-

edly grew the market significantly, there’s hope that these efforts could create some positive activity for audio-first Wi-Fi speakers. The rise of spatial audio technologies like Dolby Atmos Music will also make an impact. At the start of 2023, only one wireless speaker could play Atmos, and with content limited, speaker vendors were reluctant to include the technology in new devices. But with these limitations now overcome, 2023 saw new Atmos speakers released from the likes of Apple, JBL and Sonos. Speaker vendors will look to capitalize on this moving forward, with Futuresource’s Audio Tech Lifestyles survey showing that consumers have a higher awareness of Dolby Atmos than other audio technologies like Hi-Res. While spa-

tial audio is more common in video, of those who’ve experienced spatial audio music, just over a quarter regularly listen to music this way. Moreover, we found that 8 percent listen to most of their music in spatial audio.

LONGER REPLACEMENT CYCLES CHARACTERIZE THE MARKET While the Bluetooth party speaker market is expected to post another year of double-digit growth, the overall Bluetooth speaker market is set to have a similarly tough 2024. Consumers undoubtedly enjoy and use their Bluetooth speakers regularly, with our research showing over two-thirds use their Bluetooth speakers weekly. However, these devices are increasingly robust. With a lack of innovation permeating the market, consumers are left with little incentive to upgrade if their device is in good working condition. In turn, this has led to the market becoming monopolized by a few big brands, with JBL leading the pack at approximately 50 percent share. This scenario is unlikely to change soon. As the Bluetooth speaker market becomes one based on replacement demand, brands may begin to question their future here. Some are pinning their hopes on the emergence of Bluetooth Low Energy, which is expected to gain traction meaningfully in 2025 and 2026. However, it’s unlikely this technology will offer improvements large enough to drive a significant boost in the market. GETTY IMAGES

CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024 | 27 CURRENT PATTERNS MUST BE VIEWED IN CONTEXT

2023, with TWS notably slowing down in H2 2023. Trend patterns shifted in the latter half of 2023, with a surge in demand seen for over-ear headphones. This was likely driven by a resurgence of travel and the fatigue associated with extensive use of in-ear/TWS buds. In 2024, the market will be characterized by saturated demand from developed economies. Meanwhile, emerging markets will continue to expand in volumes

come a comparable substitute for TWS, with the latter showing much more versatility across use cases. Open-ear will see growth in demand for sports, kids, and, to a lesser extent, work-related applications. There are inherent challenges associated with the form factor, namely the difficulty in isolating noise. According to Futuresource’s Audio Tech Lifestyle consumer survey, 68 percent of respondents indicat-

After a phenomenal two years during COVID, the soundbar market has seen a noticeable downturn in line with the contracting TV market. While the recent decline rates seem startling, these figures must be seen in the context of an incredible couple of years for soundbars. The successes of the pandemic brought forward replacement cycles and ushered new consumers into the market. The outlook for 2024 may be gloomy, but the long-term picture remains bright. Consumers who brought their first soundbar during the 2020 boom will likely start seeking a replacement post-2024. This is set to coincide with the rise of new technologies, such as Dolby Atmos FlexConnect and DTS Play:Fi, that will enable easy-to-use, truly wireless surround sound. Flexible systems that can combine soundbars and wireless speakers in a “plug and play” manner will greatly enhance the consumer home theatre experience and contribute to the growing demand for soundbars from 2025 onwards.

Tech giants are questioning whether the billions of dollars and years invested in voice assistants and subsidized smart speakers have been worthwhile.

DEMAND FOR HEADPHONES SLOWS

OPEN-EAR GAINS TRACTION

After witnessing a wave of innovation and growth over the past five years, Futuresource estimated that the headphones market grew by a modest two percent in

Open-ear headphones, while being relatively new, are gaining more momentum as an alternative form factor. However, Futuresource doesn’t expect it to be-

to account for 57 percent of global demand. TWS, which has seen consistent growth in recent years, is expected to witness a temporary lull in H1 2024. Sales are expected to climb once again in H2 2024 as toptier brands release new models and replacement sales kick in across mature markets.

ed that ANC is an important factor in making a purchase decision. Headphone hardware is already very robust, with improved battery life, premium features, and great sound quality being common in devices over $100. Differentiation is proving challenging for hardware manufacturers, yet pockets of innovations are on the cards. Features like biometric sensors and sound personalization will steadily emerge at the premium end, helping brands to stand out in an increasingly competitive space.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY NEW PRODUCTS AT CES 2024

Otter Box Honored for iPad Hardline Series OtterBox has been named a CES 2024 Innovation Awards Honoree for the new Hardline Series for iPad in the categories of Mobile Devices, Accessories & Apps. Launched in June, the OtterBox Hardline Series for iPad protects valuable technology in hazardous working environments. Prior to this product’s launch, industries with workers in hazardous locations, such as manufacturing, oil and gas, automotive and others, were limited in the tools they used in a rapidly evolving digital world because of the dangers these technologies posed to their safety. Hardline Series allows these industries to introduce technologies into their daily operations with confidence in the safety of their workers because of the third-party certification earned through UL Solutions for the United States and Canada, plus IECEx and ATEX certifications internationally.

Abbott Features AVEIR DR Leadless Pacemaker System BOOTH 8713 Abbott’s AVEIR dual chamber (DR) leadless pacemaker system is, according to the company, the world’s first dual chamber leadless pacemaker to treat people with slow heart rhythms. Roughly onetenth the size of a traditional pacemaker, the atrial and ventricular components of AVEIR DR leadless pacemakers can communicate with each other through first-of-its-kind i2i (implant to implant) technology to establish continuous, synchronized pacing between the right atrium and the right ventricle. AVEIR leadless pacemakers are also engineered to be retrieved

should a person’s therapy needs change, or they need a replacement device in the future. AVEIR is a CES 2024 Innovations Awards Honoree in the Digital Health category. To support the dual chamber therapy, each implant communicates beat-to-beat with a paired, coimplanted device using implant-to-implant (i2i) communication. This novel technology employs low energy, subthreshold pulses between implanted devices using the conductive nature of the body’s blood pool and myocardial tissue. These high frequency

OFFICIAL CES DAILY 2024

100 YEARS THE CTA CENTENNIAL: IGNITING INNOVATION SINCE 1924 From America’s radio days to the dawn of modern television and from analog’s transition to digital that paved the way for today’s Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® has championed tech innovation. Across the 100-year arc of this industry’s transformation, CTA has served as the voice for free enterprise across the nation’s halls of power. The association evolved alongside technology’s most visionary disrupters to advance a regulatory climate that helped modernize the tools of consumers’ daily life. Since CTA’s start in 1924 as the Radio Manufacturers Association, U.S. technology companies have had an advocate on Capitol Hill and across the country for progress and free enterprise. As the competitive and regulatory climate has changed, so has our association. Take a look at milestones marking a century of technological transformation as CTA adapted in concert with the visionaries who led the world from radio waves to the cyber stratosphere.

Putting Members First for 100 Years I Join Today @ CTA.tech

THE RADIO ERA: 1924 TO 1949 April 16, 1924: The Associated Radio Manufacturers is Founded The Associated Radio Manufacturers was formed in response to patent fights, free-for-all merchandising practices, a lack of cohesive technical standards and looming legislation affecting radio. Informal gatherings of radio manufacturers in Chicago led to the creation of a formal association on April 16, 1924, and the name was changed to the Radio Manufacturers Association (RMA) several weeks later. July 1925: A Call for Standards In response to a growing call for technical standards in the radio industry, RMA adopted a formal resolution to develop its own RMAapproved industry standards. Early targets for standards included color-coded wiring, dimensions for plugs, jacks and sockets, and markings for transformers. 1927: Legislation Creates the Federal Radio Commission RMA formed an industrywide Radio Coordinating Committee that directed and lobbied to shape the newly passed Radio Act. The legislation established the Federal Radio Commission, which later became the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Congress adopted 90% of the recommendations put forward by RMA and the Radio Coordinating Committee. 1933: RMA Moves to Washington, D.C. Struggling with the Great Depression, as both membership and revenue were declining, RMA reorganized. It shuffled its New York and Chicago offices, combining them in a Washington, D.C., location. The move to Washington better positioned RMA to make use of New Deal and National Recovery Administration initiatives. Late 1930s: RMA Takes on Television Standards Despite RMA’s name, the organization was heavily invested in experimentation with, and regulation of, television. It developed the first proposed standards for television that the FCC quickly adopted. This work led to the beginning of commercial television broadcasting in America. 1940s: World War II and Radio Manufacturing RMA members undertook a massive effort to convert manufacturing to a war footing. Nearly all civilian radio production was earmarked for the war effort. The industry underwent massive growth and change, from an estimated $240 million in prewar factory sales to $4.5 billion by 1944. RMA membership grew once more as radio manufacturers joined to get the latest updates on war production initiatives and stay ahead of Washington goings on.

THE TELEVISION ERA: 1950 TO 1979 1950-1951: Introducing the Radio-Television Manufacturers Association (RTMA) As television adoption exploded, the association restructured to embrace changes and tech industry trends. In 1950, the Radio Manufacturers Association (RMA) rebranded as the Radio-Television

Manufacturers Association (RTMA). The organization also raised membership dues and added a salary for its president. In 1951, Glen McDaniel became the first president with a salary. 1950s: War in Korea and Manufacturing Challenges With the Korean War threatening crucial supplies of essential materials for radio and television manufacturing, RTMA worked to organize information for members about navigating these shortages and identifying potential alternative materials to make up for the deficits. 1952: Creation of the Medal of Honor Award The award was created to recognize and celebrate the contributions of those whose work furthered the domestic electronics industry. The list of recipients included members whose individual companies read like a who’s who of American electronics success. Among the honorees were IBM, HP, Motorola, Texas Instruments, General Electric, Raytheon and RCA. 1953 and 1957: From RTMA to RETMA, then EIA Recognizing the changing face of American industry and wanting to incorporate the word “electric” into its name to better represent its work, RTMA became Radio-Electronics-Television Manufacturers Association (RETMA) in 1953. Then, in 1957, members looked to the future with a new name, the Electronics Industry Association (EIA), one that underscored an expansion beyond radio and television, embracing all industry segments of electronics. 1967: The First CES Opens in New York Highly successful from the outset, the first Consumer Electronics Show – CES – was held in New York June 25-28. Organized by Staff Vice President Jack Wayman, it occupied more than 100,000 square feet in the Hilton and Americana hotels, attracting more than 100 exhibitors and 17,000 attendees. Among the highlights were exhibits displaying pocket radios and TVs with integrated circuits. The kickoff speaker was Motorola Chairman Bob Galvin.

CONSUMER TECH TAKES OFF: 1980 TO 1994 1984: Historic Win in Sony-Betamax Supreme Court Case EIA (now CTA) and Chairman of the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC) Gary Shapiro advocated on behalf of VCR manufacturers. Shapiro, CTA’s current President and CEO, fought to uphold the legality of home videotaping. The Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of Sony and other VCR manufacturers paved the way for TV recording. 1984-1986: Shaping Stereo, and the TV Experience In 1984, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved multichannel TV sound (MTS) which provided the extra dimension of stereo for more powerful audio. As reviewers commented then, the technology brought the sounds to life. Footsteps, for example, and door slams seemed to be in the same room. Gunfire on popular crime procedurals like Miami Vice sounded almost too close for comfort. In 1986, the Consumer Electronics Group (CEG, a division of CTA

Putting Members First for 100 Years I Join Today @ CTA.tech

predecessor EIA) was honored with an Emmy for its industry-shaping role in advancing stereo television. 1988: Standards For Total Home Automation CEG was instrumental in contributing standards that helped pave the way to the automated home. The Consumer Electronics (CE) Bus group developed the standard that encompassed a unified handcontrol system that established a common communication network through which any consumer electronics devices could interact, and exchange control information and data. 1990: Closed Captioning Is Signed into Law Legislation was passed requiring closed-captioning decoders in all larger color TVs manufactured after July 1, 1993. Over the next three years, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted the EIA closed-captioning standard. Today, this standard is known as CEA-608.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: 1995 TO 2014 1995-2000: Championing, and Honoring, Industry’s Visionaries In 1995, EIA’s Consumer Electronics Group (CEG) became the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA). Gary Shapiro, who joined in 1982, was named CEMA president. Then, in 1999, CEMA streamlined its name to Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), a brand that better reflected the organization’s diverse membership, and member companies’ products and services. Now an independent nonprofit corporation, CEA was better prepared to move into the 21st Century as a powerful yet flexible leader. In 2000, CEA launched the Consumer Electronics (CE) Hall of Fame to commemorate the technology pioneers. The Industry Forum awards dinner was established to recognize the hall’s inductees. 2002-2003: CEA Expands Standards Initiatives In 2002, CEA merged with Home Automation & Networking Association. The merger brought an influx of 500 new members to CEA. A year later, and with an ANSI-accredited process, CEA also increased the number of its standards committees, subcommittees and working groups. With more than 2200 participants populating these groups industry-wide, CEA succeeded in adopting standards at a faster pace. 2005-2009: Digital Patriots and TV Standards The first Digital Patriots Dinner was convened in 2005 to recognize leaders in the public sector working to advance tech growth. At the inaugural award ceremony, Intel CEO Dr. Craig Barrett received the Industry Digital Patriot Award. Later, on June 12, 2009, the U.S. adopted a new digital television (DTV) standard that capped more than two decades of work by CEA in collaboration with television broadcasters and manufacturers. That was the day that transformed American television. Following two postponements of the standard – first to December 31, 2008, then to February 17, 2009 – federal law ended analog for all U.S. full-power

TV broadcasts. In an August 2009 interview with CNET, CTA President and CEO Gary Shapiro (CEA president at the time) said the effort was the equivalent of “putting a man on the moon,” one that concluded a 25-year endeavor involving worldwide consumer electronics companies, the U.S. government and providers of broadcast, cable and satellite services. This key moment working for progress wasn’t the association’s last for that time frame. CEA took up the gauntlet again with other stakeholders in 2009, joining a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory committee to provide recommendations allowing passengers to use handheld devices in airplane mode during taxiing, takeoff and landing. 2012: Continuing Advocacy and Industry Activism The Consumer Technology Association Foundation was founded to support programs that harnessed tech for the benefit of seniors and people with disabilities. Also in the public interest, CEA stood up against proposed legislation that threatened a free and open internet. Adding its members’ voices to a chorus of other opposing parties, CEA contributed to halting votes on the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act (SOPA/PIPA).

THE PRESENT AND FUTURE ERA: 2015 TO TODAY AND BEYOND 2015: CEA is renamed Consumer Technology Association (CTA) The organization enters 2015 with a new name, Consumer Technology Association, reflecting the reality that “every company is a tech company.” 2020: CTA and the World Bank Launch the Global Tech Challenge Announced at CES 2020, CTA teamed with the World Bank Group to create the Global Tech Challenge, aimed at mobilizing the tech community to create solutions to development challenges. The 2021 honorees – 30 organizations out of 1000 applicants - excelled at delivering scalable and innovative solutions in three key areas: Digital health in East Africa, resilience in India and gender equality around the world. Also in 2020, when COVID-19 triggered mandatory quarantines and other precautions, the world’s relationship with technology changed, perhaps forever. Consumers embraced conferencing and other tech to lessen their isolation. Companies were obliged to accommodate a wide range of work-from-home protocols to keep their businesses operating. In this climate, CTA pivoted to successfully convene CES, the most powerful tech event in the world. In 2021, CTA conducted the first and only all-digital CES to spotlight, in particular, technologies that eased the strains of COVID. Breakthroughs in digital health and telemedicine were notable highlights in the event’s programming. June 2022: CTA Joins the Human Security for All (HS4A) Campaign To highlight the critical role of technology in support of human

Putting Members First for 100 Years I Join Today @ CTA.tech

security worldwide, CTA aligned with World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) in support of the HS4A campaign. The campaign, led by the United Nations, took center stage at CES 2023, the first show in history with a theme: human security. At CES, global attendees and media saw the latest technology advances solving big global challenges, with innovations in food security, access to health care, economic security, environmental protection, personal safety and mobility, community security and political freedom. Then, in 2023, the UN added technology as a human security pillar. October 2022: CTA Standards Lead to Approval of OTC Hearing Aids Following a decade of advocacy and standards development by CTA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized over-thecounter (OTC) hearing aids, effective mid-October 2022. This ruling allowed Americans with mild to moderate hearing loss to purchase, for the first time, OTC hearing aids without a medical exam or prescription, online and in stores. With OTC hearing aids now more readily available through major retail outlets, consumers with hearing loss could at last look forward to significant cost savings and more choices for these essential devices. 2023: Looking To the Future In 2023, artificial intelligence and internet-connected devices increasingly equipped with AI tech were dominating news cycles. CTA took notice. Supporting a balanced approach to policymaking toward responsible AI and IoT solutions, the association met with federal officials and released fact-based reporting to educate audiences on these complex, sometimes fraught, topics. In July, CTA joined officials from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the National Security Council (NSC) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the launch of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program. This initiative gives consumers more information about the cybersecurity of the connected products they buy. In October, CTA accepted the Chairman’s Award from the

World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) for efforts empowering consumers to make informed decisions about the security of the internet-connected devices they install in their homes. One month later, the association urged AI leadership during a U.S. Senate forum as CTA President and CEO Gary Shapiro observing in a written statement that, “data, privacy and AI are intertwined.” Moreover, he continued in the statement, “As we refine the considerations around rules and guardrails for AI at the national level, we must ensure a national approach to protecting consumer privacy.” Guidance and research on this highly promising technology was compiled in CTA’s National AI Policy Framework and in a newly released report, Decoding Consumer Sentiment and Outlook on AI. As we consider the next 100 years, we honor the many, almost unimaginable, accomplishments this industry has shared with the world as we pledge to continue providing an arena where companies can connect, collaborate and contribute their innovations, unfettered. We will continue providing guidance, exclusive reporting and advocacy before federal, state and local governments with the measured goal of improving lives of consumers everywhere. Through public-private collaborations, the technology industry is ready and able to continue innovating in the public interest. Considering the advances of the last 100 years, the outlook for 100 years ahead is promising. Technologies are already emerging that can solve the world’s biggest challenges. These are solutions that can counter climate change, help to end world hunger, improve societal stability and advance positive health outcomes. Tech on display at CES 2024 is resolving myriad ills and inequities. Celebrate with us, and be part of a future made brighter through technology and entrepreneurial vision.

OFFICIAL CES DAILY 2024

THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE IS DIGITAL, EQUITABLE, ACCESSIBLE

Health care and the sector’s associated technologies is always a mustsee experience at CES and will draw attendees to the latest in digital health. While the industry has experienced strains related to costs, access and lingering impacts from the pandemic, the good news is that digital health is making a difference. Across the show’s many stages, solutions that address personalized medicine, treatment availability, health equity, medical expenses and more are on display. The Digital Health Summit at CES 2024 provides an in-depth look at the trends and topics in consumer health and provides programming featuring innovative solutions that are transformative and inspiring. A journey through digital health at CES 2024 will reveal that systems, products and services are rapidly emerging for more personal,

portable and precise care. Digital health exhibits and programming clearly indicate a trend toward sector offerings tailored to the individual. But first, consider a few challenges, particularly ones of disparity in care. Digital Health, and Inequities Tech is Tackling As showcased on the CES exhibit floor, digital health technologies are rapidly gaining acceptance among consumers and clinicians. They are empowering consumers to take control of their wellness through diagnostic tools, personal health trackers and individualized treatments that save lives while lowering costs.

Putting Members First for 100 Years I Join Today @ CTA.tech

While showcasing great health innovation, the CES Digital Health Summit will also explore how to ensure everyone has equal access to innovative technologies. One area that will be highlighted is how technology can address disparities in women’s health care, which has been not only a national focus, but a focus for CTA. On November 13, 2023, President Biden announced the first White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, an effort led by First Lady Jill Biden to tackle historical underfunding of women’s health research, which has led to drastic disparities in health outcomes for women. CTA explored how digital health solutions can help address barriers to care for women in our 2023 study, The Future of Women’s Digital Health Solutions, which surveyed over 1000 U.S. adult women to explore key issues and opportunities related to women’s health. Notably, 64% of women believe digital health solutions can reduce health care costs and 58% think these solutions can help reduce health care inequities. Women’s use of digital health tools, CTA research showed, is driven by three key factors: the ability to track and monitor health effectively (40%), the aspiration to positively impact their health (39%) and the goal of establishing new healthy habits (36%). Personalized health tracking allows women to effectively manage their health with digital tools like apps and wearables. These help women keep tabs on various wellness parameters such as menstrual health, mental health, fitness and nutrition. Women’s Health Technology at CES 2024 This topic is highlighted by the Digital Health Summit, a hub for industry innovation and leadership. The Summit showcases the latest digital health developments. For deeper insight into tech’s impact on women’s health and health equity, don’t miss the panel discussion, How Tech Can Transform Women’s Health, on January 11 at 1:00 p.m. PT. and Advancing Health Equity Through Technology on January 11 at 2:00 p.m. PT. Visit CES.tech or download the CES 2024 app to explore these topics and much more in digital health. Download the CES 2024 app and visit the Exhibitor Directory to discover the latest in cutting-edge wearables, telehealth advancements and AI-driven health solutions that are leading the way in digital health.

AI in Research and on the Show Floor Shortcomings in women’s health care in the U.S. are gaining far wider attention, and AI is a promising solution as a technology that’s gaining ground across the sector for consumers’ and clinicians’ benefit. Recent leaps in AI innovation are fueling progress in health technology by harnessing large data sets. In this way, the tech speeds development of personalized treatments while streamlining physician workflows to reduce burnout. Evidence points to this trend gaining interest, as well as acceptance. Findings from two CTA reports, Driving Consumer Adoption of Digital Health Solutions and 2023 Decoding Consumer Sentiment and Outlook on Artificial Intelligence, U.S. Edition, reveal that: • At least three in four consumers who are interested in using digital health solutions believe these solutions will help improve their overall wellbeing. • 42% of U.S. adults familiar with AI expect that the health care field will experience the greatest positive impact, compared to 20 other sectors surveyed, from AI. • More than two in five (42%) are open to having AI technology tools make medical diagnoses for them. • 64% of U.S. adults familiar with AI are open (very to somewhat) to consulting with an AI doctor remotely. • More than a quarter (29%) are also open to having AI tech tools perform surgery on them. At CES 2024, exhibits, conference programming and more demonstrate how technology is moving markets and attitudes relative to personalization, accessibility and innovation. AI and other digital health solutions are bridging gaps in care through inclusive systems, improved user interfaces and virtual ecosystems for anytime-anywhere access.

CTA’s AI working group addresses questions around this technology and helps guide CTA’s work on policy issues. Competition CTA endorses policies promoting vibrant tech marketplaces that prioritize consumer welfare. We urge governments to provide clear and consistent legal guidelines for business activities. We oppose

penalizing companies through regulations that target size, scope or influence across political, social and financial sectors. Drones CTA works with elected officials and government regulators to ensure that drone technology is safely integrated in the nation’s airspace. As part of this initiative, CTA supports the “Know Before You Fly” consumer safety campaign, encouraging responsible use of drones. Energy Efficiency CTA members have made tremendous progress in building energy efficient products and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, CTA has supported and pioneered product-specific voluntary agreements that have enabled significant reductions in electricity use without governmental intervention. Environmental Sustainability While U.S. manufacturers are making extraordinary advances in reducing e-waste, states’ imposition of arbitrary recycling costs threatens to stifle our industry’s success. CTA advocates for proinnovation end-of-use policies that benefit consumers and our environment.

Putting Members First for 100 Years I Join Today @ CTA.tech

Future of Work CTA supports employer-led strategies and regulatory approaches that create more education and hiring pathways such as apprenticeships, internships and train-to-hire programs to help address the nation’s skills gap. CTA leads a 21st Century Workforce Council, the CTA Apprenticeship Coalition, and conducts its annual Future of Work Survey. Immigration Reform Immigrants start businesses, create jobs and have founded an impressive number of startups and iconic American companies. CTA favors updating our immigration laws to encourage foreign-born entrepreneurs and U.S.-educated immigrants to come to, and remain in, the U.S.

INNOVATION FOR ALL AT CES 2024 Diversity is the bedrock of innovation. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is committed to the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion at CES and beyond. For innovation to reach its full potential, diverse voices and perspectives must be heard and amplified for businesses in the tech industry to flourish. That’s why CES 2024 is celebrating D&I champions, funders, thought leaders and pioneers. Women, people of color, and people with disabilities and age-related challenges are making a difference despite a history of underrepresentation and lack of funding in the technology field. The Innovation for All program at CES 2024 brings together thought leaders and allies for engagement opportunities, networking, policy discussions, and best-practices exchanges in advancing diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Program formats range from dynamic panel discussions to networking events that connect industry professionals and tech founders from underrepresented groups. Download the CES 2024 app and plan to participate in diversity and inclusion activities at CES. Intermediary Liability The common-sense principle that the speaker – not the platform – is responsible for online speech underpinning the modern Internet. Changing Section 230: Platform Liability of the Communications Decency Act to place liability on the platform would disincentivize investment, harm our internet ecosystem and open small businesses to devastating lawsuits. Patent Reform Frivolous litigation brought by so-called patent trolls drains billions from the U.S. economy — money that innovators must spend on lawyers rather than research and development, or on creating jobs. CTA supports patent policies that reduce the explosion of lawsuits brought by patent trolls to victimize entrepreneurs and startups.

Self-Driving Cars Self-driving vehicles have the potential to save tens of thousands of lives a year while providing enormous mobility opportunities to the elderly and people with disabilities. CTA encourages the government to implement national technology-neutral rules encouraging the safe and expeditious rollout of new automobile and mobility technologies. Spectrum Access to wireless broadband service has become necessary for work, education, shopping and accessing medical care. CTA supports an expansion of broadband access by deploying more spectrum and removing obstacles to infrastructure installation for 5G and other advanced services. Sustainability Meeting increasing consumer demand for high-tech devices includes ensuring sustainable policies and practices are in place. Industry-led programs and initiatives are making significant progress in reducing e-waste and adverse environmental impacts. Tariffs International trade plays a vital role for our industry and the U.S. economy. CTA advocates for free and fair trade, encourages new trade agreements and opposes tariffs on foreign goods that act as costly taxes on American companies.

In 2022, Mercury’s V12 600hp Verado outboard engine won the award in the Vehicle & Transportation category, and in 2021, Mercury’s 1st Mate Marine System technology won in two categories, earning the Best of Innovation designation in the In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety category and the CES Innovation Award honor in the Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation category. Mercury introduced the Avator 20e and 35e electric propulsion systems this past August and both will be part of Brunswick’s CES 2024 exhibit as part of the Company’s celebration of its ACES technology and leadership in electrification. The two award-winning models joined the already award-winning Avator 7.5e outboard, which officially launched at CES 2023. Two additional electric outboard products will be unveiled in the coming weeks as Mercury Marine advances its commitment to be the leader in marine electric propulsion.

78 | CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024

Sony CEO: “Creators Are at the Heart of our Business” BY JOHN SCIACCA At its 2024 CES press conference, Sony focused less on new products and more on discussing its tools for enabling content creators, developments with PlayStation game film and TV series adaptations, and discussing the evolving relationship with Honda in its mobility division. Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman and CEO of Sony Group, said that Sony has always placed people at the heart of creativity, and that “the company has always been committed to being a force for good by empowering creators to turn their creative sparks into stories…creators are at the heart of our business.” Yoshida mentioned that Columbia Pictures celebrates 100 years this year, and said, “We will continue to work alongside teams of filmmakers, writers, producers and actors to fill the world with emotion.” To further its support of enabling content creators to express their visions, Sony introduced Torchlight. This is a space with tools and technologies that allow creators to experiment with new concepts and unique ways of storytelling, allowing ideas to move from concept to visualization to production in realtime using performance capture, virtual cameras, and advanced visualization tools. This provides a much faster time from pre-production to final product. While Sony has been successf ul with f ilm adaptations of PlayStation games like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, the company also produces some of the most successful television series in the world. Last year, The Last of Us was the second most watched HBO series in the past 13 years, and the series has already

won eight Emmy awards and is currently nominated for five more, with a second season already underway. Twisted Metal also launched last year on Peacock and has also picked up for second season. Writing is underway for God of War for Prime Video and Horizon Zero Dawn for Netflix. And live action film adaptation of Nintendo’s game franchise, The Legend of Zelda, is underway that “will deliver an amazing tale of adventure and discovery.” Sony is also looking to expand its imaginative worlds into physical world, and Wonderverse, located near Chicago and opening in two days, will feature immersive experiences from Sony films like Jumanji, Uncharted, and Zombieland, and the company will be demonstrating an immersive world of Ghostbusters here at CES using haptic and motion technology. PlayStation has been a leader in gaming innovation for decades, and last month PlayStation 5 surpassed 50 million units sold. There has been a tremendous response to hit games like Spiderman 2, Fortnite, and FC24, with over 123 million active monthly accounts. PlayStation continues to expand on being the best place to play with even greater access to gaming experiences. Sony continues to find opportunities in both virtual and physical spaces, and its mocopi 3D motion capture creation tool transports real human movement to the virtual space, allowing a new solution for spatial content creation by enabling creators to shape and edit 3D models. Sony says this expands the creation space by overlaying virtual objects into physical spaces, letting creators work in real space with an immersive development experience.

Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman and CEO of Sony Group

Last year’s CES saw the announcement of the new joint development of Sony Honda Mobility, and this year Sony debuted the latest prototype of the AFEELA vehicle, which was driven onto the stage using a PlayStation Dual Shock controller. While they previously stated they expected the first cars to be delivered to customers in spring 2026, no update was given on any timeline. Toshihiro Mibe, president of Honda, took the stage and said Honda is focused on the future of mobility and added, “That goes beyond the cars and motorcycles on the road today. It will play a key role in the sky, in the ocean, and even outer space.” Mibe also said, “Mobility is undergoing a once-in100-years transformation. Honda wants to be the company that leads this transformation.” He said there is a unique “chemical reaction” when Sony and Honda collaborate, and hopes Sony Honda Mobility will fully leverage this chemistry to create a new mobility experience, producing “something we couldn’t have imagined before.” Using Sony’s video, audio, and entertainment technologies, Sony Honda Mobility will transform mobility and offer new value in that space, and Sony believes software will provide new function and value to redefine the relationship between people and mobility. Of course, safety is also a prime concern, and Sony touted its partnership with Microsoft to use AI for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) along with advanced sensing devices like LIDAR, cameras, and radar, with an aim of realizing autonomous driving. Yoshida closed by saying the company’s potential is unlimited when they work alongside creators. “People are at the heart of creativity. And we power creativity with technology.”
