AVIXA TV Studio Streams From the Show Floor

When it comes to content production, AVIXA doesn’t merely talk the talk—it walks the walk and streams the stream as well, as evidenced by the AVIXA TV Studio running throughout InfoComm. Located in West Hall (Booth W2645), you can watch its broadcasts live on the show floor, but they’re also viewable in the lobbies of the LVCC and streamed across all major social media platforms, including LinkedIn and YouTube.

“Content production and streaming as a whole is really blossoming—the convergence between broadcast and AV is going to be a very common topic this week at InfoComm—so we wanted to showcase some of the latest technology and how it is more accessible now than ever before,” says Samantha Minish, vice president of content delivery, AVIXA. “We felt that it’s really important to tell AV stories using audio and visual technologies, so the AVIXA TV Studio was built to highlight content production, streaming, and virtual production. It’s an end-to-end solution designed to replicate what you can build out in a corporate environment; we have technology from Ross, Ikan provided the lights and teleprompters, we’ve got Shure audio, and there’re Sharp NEC displays.”

Building a full-fledged TV studio on the InfoComm show floor is no simple matter, and a great deal of planning went into it as a result. “Serendipitously, I was at our UpStream event in London last year, speaking on a panel, and we were talking about innovations,” says Minish. “I made a comment about wouldn’t it be cool if we could just have a virtual production studio? Ross approached

us and said, ‘We think that would be really cool. Can we see if there’s something here?’ They’ve been an amazing partner; we’ve been developing this in earnest for the last six to eight months, but it’s been about a year in the making.”

The result is a facility that began booth construction nearly a week ago, as it required rigging, system installations, broadcast lighting, and more. The first AVIXA TV Studio broadcasts were scheduled for Tuesday as preview streams; taking place even as surrounding booths were still under construction. That meant the studio itself had to be completed and fully functional by Monday night.

While the AVIXA TV Studio may broadcast live streams daily at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the show floor, there’s plenty more happening at W2645, as the facility is hosting workshops and panels aimed at all sorts of stakeholders—from the marketers who want a studio in order to up their content marketing game, to the engineers, AV tech

managers, and consultants who will design, build, and keep it running.

The AVIXA TV Studio maybe a temporary facility, but its presence at the show won’t be temporary at all. Much like a hit TV show that gets renewed before it has even aired, the studio is already set to return—and around the world at that. “This is not a one-time deal anymore—it’s a staple,” says Minish. “We are going to bring this next year to ISE and then InfoComm again, so this solution area is here to stay for the industry.”

The rack mount models can be installed in equipment racks right next to the equipment you’re converting. Simply add a Blackmagic 2110 IP Converter to live production switchers, disk recorders, streaming processors, cameras, TVs and more.

Conforms to the SMPTE-2110 IP Video Standard

Blackmagic 2110 IP products conform to the SMPTE ST-2110 standard for IP video, which specifies the transport, synchronization and description of 10 bit video, audio and ancillary data over managed IP networks for broadcast. Blackmagic 2110 IP products support SMPTE-2110-20 video, SMPTE-2110-21 traffic shaping/ timing, SMPTE-2110-30 audio and SMPTE-2110-40 for ancillary data.

Uses Simple 10G Ethernet for Low Cost

Blackmagic 2110 IP Converters are available in models with RJ-45 connectors for simple Cat6 copper cables or SFP sockets for optical fiber modules and cables. Using simple Cat6 copper cables means you can build SMPTE-2110 systems at a dramatically lower cost. Plus copper cables can remote power devices such as converters and cameras. There are also models for optical fiber Ethernet.

Incredibly Easy to Install

One of the biggest problems with SMPTE-2110 is needing an IT tech on standby to keep video systems running. Blackmagic 2110 IP converters solve this problem because they can connect point to point, so you don’t need to use a complex Ethernet switch if you don’t want to. That means you get the advantage of SMPTE2110 IP video with simple Ethernet cables, remote power and bidirectional video.

InfoComm Tour Takes HigherEd Professionals Back to School

Tuesday morning, higher-education AV and IT professionals and integrators were taken back to school on a tour of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ new UNLV Advanced Engineering Building and its new Flexatorium and Maker Spaces.

Complete in February 2024, the building is the newest of four interconnected engineering buildings on campus—the largest growing major at UNLV. Located next to a 10,000-spot parking deck, the area is a main thoroughfare on the North side of campus, and having something that grabs the attention of students, teachers, and visitors was a must. “It’s Vegas, right?” said Frank Alaimo, manager of classroom technology at UNLV. “On the strip you have got signage everywhere. This was a prime spot for it.” A 39-outdoor-pitch Nanolumens video wall, one of three in the new building, adorns the outside of the building.

The building itself is more of a researchbased showcase of innovation and not necessarily designed for teaching. However, once inside, the first stop on the tour was the lone general-purpose classroom in the building. It was designed in UNLV’s renowned RebelFlex style, what Alaimo called “the Swiss Army knives of classrooms,” with ceiling microphones and cameras in the back and Zoom videoconferencing capabilities. Nearly 70 percent of classrooms on the UNLV campus are

now following the RebelFlex model, with hopes of more to follow.

The tour continued to a massive Maker Space, which had yet another Nanolumens dvLED wall, huddle rooms, and workstations for students to work with space for presentations or smaller events to be held. A Crestron house, UNLV is powered by DM NVX technology—everywhere from the Maker Space to the RebelFlex classroom and auditorium is wired generally the same, with 95 percent of the features similar from room to room for ease of control throughout all of UNLV’s buildings.

The final stop was the Flexatorium. The 145-capacity venue is a lecture hall for classes by day and a high-tech event space by night. As the name suggests, the space was designed with flexibility and adaptability in mind: There are three sections of tiered rows that can moved back to allow for more open space for events and pre-

sentations. A massive 32x9 Nanolumens dvLED video wall—that can be single or double view, or simply digital signage or an already prepared video—stole the show, controlled from a lectern that had a curved Dell display screen mirroring the wall, so the presenter never needs to turn around. The JBL speakers on the wall added to the experience, providing intense soundowever, Alaimo was sure to point out that the ceiling speakers and wall speakers were designed for different uses: the ceiling for speech and the JBL speakers to provide audio those in attendance can feel. Unlike the RebelFlex classroom, this was not designed to be a videoconferencing space, but a lecture-capture event space, so there is no need for ceiling mics.

It is clear from its hybrid RebelFlex model to its mind-blowing Dolby Atmos immersive theater and now the Flexatorium, UNLV stays on the cutting edge of technology and innovation.

HETMA Hosts 2-Day Higher Education Summit

The Higher Education Summit, presented by the Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA), made its InfoComm debut in Orlando in 2023. Building off the overwhelming success of last year’s one-day affair, HETMA returned to InfoComm 2024 with its first-ever, two-day Higher Education Summit. AV and IT professionals from colleges and universities converged on the Las Vegas Convention Center on the Monday and Tuesday prior to the opening of the show floor, gathering to discuss the latest insights on management, trends, and innovations behind the Pro AV that powers higher education.

“I really look forward to all these higher-ed AV professionals getting to share and collaborate,” says HETMA vice chair Erin MaherMoran, IT manager-classroom technology, Johns Hopkins University, who also led the breakout session “You Don’t Have to Be the Boss to Be the Leader” on the first day of the Summit. “It really is all about sharing knowledge with each other and having those opportunities to interact with people you probably would have never met from all these different colleges and universities.”

After some brief opening remarks from Joe Way, executive director, digital spaces at UCLA, in which the HETMA co-founder revealed a “double-decker” booth on the Info-

Comm 2024 show floor for HETMA this year, Simeon Ananou, vice president and chief information officer, Stony Brook, gave the Summit’s keynote on leadership, the theme of the first day of the Summit. As he took the attendees on a journey through a time of great thinkers and thought leaders—ranging from the works of Erik Erikson to Albert Bandura— he reminded everyone that, since Covid-19 changed the way of the world, higher education is under a microscope, and strong leadership in AV and IT is a must now more than ever. As he said, “You can’t spell university without IT.” He concluded with his seven lessons—whether it is being adaptable, understanding the stages of human development, or creating welcoming experiences to reduce fear and anxiety—to enable and unleash organizational change.

While the opening day of the summit focused on leadership and management through panels and breakout sessions with attention to cultivating a leadership mindset regardless of someone’s role or title, day two turned its attention to in-house integration and students and Pro AV with additional presentations and informative panels. Additionally, in an offsite event, the Higher Ed AV Awards honoring the people, projects, and products of the higher ed vertical were announced on Monday night at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club.

AI and Digital Signage

The D=SIGN Digital Signage Conference kicked off yesterday morning with an informative session entitled “AI Primer for Digital Signage.” Hosted by Jim Nista, creative director for Nista Digital Content, the class covered artificial intelligence basics before heading into its expanding uses in digital signage.

To exemplify what AI is, Nista referred to Nigel Richards, a New Zealand man who memorized every word in the French Scrabble dictionary and won the French Scrabble Championship even though he could not speak French. Did he know what any of the words meant? No, but he knew they existed, and that is pretty much AI in a nutshell—it doesn’t know the meaning of the words it uses, but it knows the words.

It is getting better and better, and Nista uses the current wave of AI tools, including Open AI’s ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, and Midjourney, every day.

He warns that there are still plenty of things

that can go wrong with AI and that, right now, its accuracy is around a B+ but improving. He also recommends to not subscribe to all the hype around AI and to slow down and investigate how it can enhance your business and workflow.

Some of the many ways AI can assist a digital signage program include real-time-generated personalized content, playlist management, interactive kiosk design, and HTML templates for lobby directories. He also described a QSR service where AI will monitor inventory and take an item off the menu if one of its key ingredients runs out.

Overall, Nista is optimistic about our AI future, explaining that it does not take away jobs, but provides users with a very smart virtual assistant. He also believes that better integration will be coming soon.

He ended the presentation with an AI-generated image of a six-fingered hand—AI has a hard time with hands—and five reminders to keep in mind when using it:

1. There are bad actors.

2. Double-check everything.

3. Use the sniff test.

4. Demand proof

5. Facts can be inconvenient.

He also urged the crowd to be vigilant, as people are using AI as an excuse to hide the truth.

Strat Theater Reborn With 11-Display Video Experience via ATS-Pro

BOOTH W3801 The Strat Theater inside Las Vegas’s Stratosphere Hotel recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation under the guidance of SPI Entertainment.

The crown jewel of the new Strat Theater is a fully immersive 11-screen Taylorleds video system from ATS-Pro. The main video wall spans the entire width of the stage, with two flanking displays completing the forward view. Four additional displays extend down each side, fully enveloping the audience in stunning 4K detail.

The simplicity of Taylorleds’ combined data and power connections made installation a breeze, eliminating the complexity of more conventionally wired displays. “It’s essentially a cable-less system that clicks together like Lego blocks,” explains technical manager Jeremy Frayne.

ATS-Pro chose NovaStar’s flagship H Series video splicing processor to integrate all 11 screens.

As the first all-in-one splicer/controller, H Series eliminates the need for a separate controller for each screen.

“At ATS-Pro we approach video as fully integrated systems, with processing equally as important as the panels,” says ATS-Pro’s CEO Chris Pelzar. “The H Series’ power and simplicity is an absolute game-changer.”

It seems the word is out. Since reopening, the new Strat Theater has been booked solid, hosting more than 1000 shows in 2023 alone.

“ATS-Pro gave us a platform that offers so much room for creativity,” concludes SPI Entertainment’s CEO Adam Stack. “The video is so impactful and unexpected. It’s one of our strongest selling points.”

Labuskes: InfoComm Is On Track… and Growing

What happens in Vegas…impacts the entire Pro AV industry, as InfoComm 2024 takes over the Las Vegas Convention Center this week. During an interview prior to the show, David Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA, the association that produces InfoComm, shared his feelings about the overall health of the industry, AVIXA’s expanding international presence, and expectations for this year’s event.

What are your attendance expectations in 2024?

David Labuskes: We’re not able to track verified attendance yet for obvious reasons, but we are able to see some other numbers like registrations to-date and hotel room bookings. All of those certainly lead us to expect a great showing. We’d expect that we are definitely back into the realm of the InfoComms that were held before the pandemic. We’re excited about the continued diversity in attendance as well, with a continued showing from countries around the world, channel participants, and end users alike—and a continuing emphasis of diverse and creative minds.

Why is AVIXA expanding its international footprint with InfoComm América Latina in 2025?

DL: Latin America is an amazing hot spot for AV innovation, and the community in that region includes some of those most passionate practitioners of our profession anywhere in the world. Our drive to return InfoComm to that region is perfectly aligned with our motivators on every

other continent of the world—to act as a catalyst for market growth and to serve as the hub for the AV profession. That community has waited for a long time to have a place to come together and grow, learn, and conduct business. And I couldn’t be more excited to deliver that place in the form of InfoComm América Latina.

Is Pro AV past the supply-chain issues of recent years, and is it a healthy industry as a whole?

DL: While lingering shocks from pandemicinduced supply-chain issues remain, Pro AV has largely recovered. As a result, growth can once again be more equally felt across the market. Macro-economic issues like inflation and interest rates represent headwinds this year, but growth is still expected. Experiential applications for AV technology are at the forefront of this growth, as The Sphere [the new immersive Las Vegas venue] exemplifies.

AI is arguably the biggest buzzword in Pro AV these days, but what will be some of the other hot topics on the trade show floor?

DL: We all do love our buzzwords, don’t we! I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing more innovation in areas like AV and network transport integration and the continued advancements and integration of collaboration within our workflows and customer projects. I think we’re going to see a lot of exciting solutions wrapped around content production and streaming. Two great places to hear discussions about all the hot topics are Xchange LIVE and AVIXA TV.

What makes AVIXA TV an important component of InfoComm 2024?

DL: AVIXA TV has undergone significant evolution in recent years, and 2024 is no exception. We’re transitioning from an initiative aimed at extending the reach of in-person events globally to a platform showcasing cutting-edge content production and streaming technologies, notably virtual production. Partnering with Ross Video, AVIXA TV will showcase accessible solutions at the intersection of Pro AV and broadcast, with an innovative booth design set to bring a classroom, courtroom, and even iconic Las Vegas locations to life right on the show floor. Livestreams during InfoComm will be broadcast across major social media platforms including YouTube and LinkedIn.
